Nikolay Davydenko continues his stellar play in the fall with a three set 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 defeat of Roger Federer. It seems like everyone is beating Federer these days but Federer was impressed with Davydenko’s performance. The final set was close with Federer only two points away from taking the match. “I was a couple of points away, but just couldn’t get it done.” Daydenko was pleased with the win saying he wanted to beat Federer for the first time, perhaps by 2011. Federer claimed the number one ranking position on the ATP tour struggled with his serve and that gave Davydenko all the encouragement he needed to win today. Davydenko moves onto the ATP Final match on Sunday against either Del Poto or Soderling.

Nikolay Davydenko pulled off an upset of Robin Soderling 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 to knock out Novak Djokovic who had beaten Rafael Nadal, earlier today. He’ll face Roger Federer. Soderling had aleady secured his spot in the semi finals on Saturday and he’ll face Juan Martin Del Potro. Everything is pointing to the same match as the US Open. Maybe a chance for Federer to avenge his loss.

Not a happy day for Brits as their favorite player was not able to make the ATP final 4 at the O2 Arena in London when Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina beating Roger Federer 6-2, 6-7, 6-3. Del Potro moves onto the semi finals along with Federer and Soderling. If Del Potro had lost one more game against Federer, Murray and Federer would have advanced. Murray beat Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 6-7 , 7-6 but all for nought as he is out of the tournament which is based on a complicated ranking system. Rafael Nadal of Spain was eliminated after two consecutive losses. Davydenko and Soderling square off today’s matches along with Nadal vs Djokovic. Davydenko could make it with a big win today. Djokovic still has a chance to make it to the final. Djokovic has been playing much better of late with his new racket.

For the first time in the last 6 meetings, Soderling trounced rival Novak Djokovic 7-6, 6-1. Soderling struggled with his net play but served well with 10 aces and winning 80% of his first serve points. Soderling has won $240,000 with the win and takes one of the semi final spots.

Andy Murray and Roger Federer one their first matches on Sunday’s first round of play. They are in the A Group. Murray beat Martin Del Potro 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 who was hampered by a bleeding nose. Federer dropped the first set to Fernando Verasco but persevered to win the match 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. The crowd at the 02 Arena in London was packed to the rafters at over 17,000. That’s a record crowd for a tennis match. Some are suggesting the tournament and the success of Murray could result in a resurgence of tennis in Britain.

As I watched THIS IS IT, the Michael Jackson concert documentary, I kept wondering what MJ himself would have thought of it. Being the perfectionist that he was I’m sure he would have been horrified that his semi-polished rehearsals were being seen by everybody. I don’t think this means it is a bad film, though. In fact I loved this film and I will probably buy it when it comes out on disc. The fact that we see him making mistakes makes him seem much more human than he did on all the gossip-rag shows. Or, for that matter, in any of the perfectly edited videos he made of himself.

I’m sad that he had to die for this side of him to be revealed. But the result is a film that ranks up there with Truth or Dare, Sign O the Times, Bring on the Night or Stop Making Sense. Unlike those films, though, it has the unique perspective of revealing how a major concert of this type is put together, even though it is a show that is ultimately doomed.

Personally I am slightly obsessed with the great 80s pop icons. Sometimes the images of these icons overshadow the skilled musicianship of the performers. Madonna is exactly the same, for instance. Her genius as a recording artist is not mentioned nearly as much as who she is adopting. How often do these gossip shows ever talk about the music? Don’t get me wrong, Michael Jackson’s personal life left a lot to be desired, but if you want to deconstruct who he was as an artist this film offers a rare glimpse.

There are brilliant performances, intermingled with the actual CGI-heavy short films that were going to be a part of the show. There are also some interesting virtual reality set pieces to show the audience how the show was going to look onstage at the O2 arena. It would have been such an amazing show. There are extended grooves of songs from Thriller, that are better than the originals with an unbelievably funky saw-bass groove. Surprisingly nothing from Invincible or Blood on the Dance Floor is included in the set list. (You mean he didn’t play Morphine?) His voice is angelic and I must say I was surprised at how strong it was, given that he was just about to overdose. Do I think he looked strong? No, not at all. He was very thin and gaunt, resembling a Tim Burton/Edward Scissorhands version of himself.

My favorite part of the film are his discussions with music director Michael Beardon. I am a music director and I felt for this guy when Michael Jackson is telling him how to play the groove in The Way You Make Me Feel. This type of situation, which I have to face from time to time with performers, must have been multiplied in stress by a million given that it was Michael Jackson telling him how to play. MJ is sometimes very amusing when he says non-specific things like “Play it like you’re having trouble getting out of bed”. Who knew he was funny? Not me.

There are two contradictions that occurred to me while watching this film. First, to me funk is simply the coolest music that has ever existed. And Michael Jackson is clearly a funk master. And yet during his life he seemed very uncool at times. This was partly because he was so mainstream and partly because of his fascination with stupid things like Peter Pan. He was really kind of a square, if I may bring back a Happy Days word. So how is this square so brilliant at making the coolest and sexiest music known to the world?

The sexuality is the other contradiction. He is one of the most sexual performers I have ever seen. There is a dance in this film, an extended version of Billie Jean, I think, where he takes his crotch grab dance to new heights. It is now a crotch stroke. How was someone, who was so sexual in performance mode, so oddly asexual when he was just having a conversation with someone about how to dance?

I can only speculate but I think the contradiction is simply that he had to hide his sexuality so it came out in his music and not in his personality. This is part of his tragic story, a story which I am sure is misunderstood to some extent. Thankfully this film shows how much of a genius he was at what he did best – music and dancing. The fact that the concert is called THIS IS IT, and the song they found in his desk drawer starts with the line “This is it” seems like a moment of synchronicity to me. Michael never planned to include that song in this show, and yet it fits perfectly as the title song to the soundtrack of the documentary. That is a meaningful coincidence if I ever saw one.

Michael Jackson’s This Is It: Review

Last night I was able to catch an Advance Screening of the new Michael Jackson concert documentary This Is It. The film chronicles the dress rehearsals and sound checks of what was to be Jackson’s come back, as well as his final curtain call. Running almost completed performances of hits like Billie Jean, They Don’t Really Care About Us, Beat It and Man In The Mirror, Jackson and his crew of producers, directors, dancers and musicians brought together what could possibly have been one of the best and most successful career comebacks of all time.

Jackson was in his element, his singing was dead on and all of his vocals were done live with no backing tracks which prove that he possesed a level of professionalism and pure ability that is almost unheard of today in the Pop world. At some points he did look a little rusty as far as dance moves are concerned, but taking into account the fact that the man was 50 years old at the time and hadn’t performed live in almost 10 years makes sense. But all of the skepticism about his dancing abilities were put to rest during his dance sequence for Billie Jean.

The Thriller portion of the film saw the addition of new footage in the style of the original music video filmed in 3D for use on the digital backdrop during the concerts. This was also done for other songs including a scene with Jackson and Humphrey Bogart for Smooth Criminal and a digital army for They Don’t Really Care About Us among others, but most elaborately for Thriller. The new visual technology that was used made for some great looking effects and surreal backdrops.

Aside from the music, the film showed some rare behind the scenes footage of just how a production of that magnitude comes together. Along side the show (and film) director Kenny Ortega, Jackson crafted a great work and was hands on in every aspect of the concert from musical direction and filming to set and costume design. His work with the musicians and his vast and complete knowledge of his entire catalog was striking and showed that he was not just a talented performer but also an amazing songwriter and arranger.

The only problem that I have with this film is that I will never get to see the finished product live and in person. This Is It is a great look at the interworkings and passions of a man who still had it, could still do what everyone remembered him and would no doubt have been back on top of the Pop world, the tragedy being that he would never able to bring it to his fans in person.

The 02 Arena is a very nifty place. It’s big, bright, and colorful. It reminds me in some way

The 02 Arena is a very nifty place. It’s big, bright, and colorful. It reminds me in some way of a small, indoor Las Vegas. From outside, it looks a bit like a very large tent held down to the Isle of Dogs with tent pegs and with alien-like antennae poking out of its top. It isn’t pretty–but it has its own modern kind of charm.

Inside there are restaurants and shopping throughout. At the center is the arena itself. It was here that the 2009 World Championships were held last week and where the Olympic Games will be held in 2012.

I arrived just as the first rotation was beginning. It took me much longer than expected to get from Kingston upon Thames to the O2. It took two hours! I took the bus to the Tube, then rode all the way from the end of the District line to Westminster, changed to the Jubilee line, and rode on past the Tower of London. The O2 is in the far east of town, Kingston is past the western edge of London. I knew it would take a while, but I didn’t realize it would take that long. I had to do some running to get in my seat in time.

My seat was not good. I was way up in the rafters behind the flags. I have poor eyesight even with my glasses on, so I could barely make out what the big scoreboards said. Forget the little scoreboards beside each apparatus that give the names of the competitors and their scores! From where I was, I basically had to make (educated) guesses about who was who. The announcers didn’t help much. It was hit-or-miss whether a gymnast was actually announced in the arena.

The competition consisted of 24 girls, 6 competing on each apparatus in a rotation. The girls who qualified top 6 into the all-around all started out on vault (this really helped me figure out who was on each events, because I knew who had qualified top 6 and could tell them apart by their leotards). There were two Americans in the lead group, Bridget Sloan and Rebecca Bross. They each had solid vaults (both DTYs if I remember correctly–that is double-twisting Yurchenkos) but after one rotation it was a gymnast from Japan named Koko Tsurumi who led after starting off on bars. She’s known for her wonderful execution, so I was pleased to see her name at the top of the scoreboard.

Vault always goes quicker than the other rotations. Once the lead group was done on vault, I went to get some food (I was starving). I knew it would be a few minutes before everyone else had finished on bars, beam, and floor, so I had a few extra minutes. I needed them. It was really slow getting the food.

I rushed back to my seat with some chips/French fries and a soda. It was what I could afford! Oh well. As I set down, rotation 2 was beginning. Becca Bross hit a really aggressive set. Bross was clean but not quite as quick and assertive as Bross. Over on beam, Tsurumi put together a clean set. She continued to lead after the second rotation.

In the meantime, instead of announcing who was competing on each event, the announcers in the arena were throwing out random and pointless info. They named a few skills and acted really impressed. I would have loved for them to give scores instead. At all the other competitions I’ve been to (two American Cups, the 2007 Worlds, and the 2008 Olympic Trials), all the scores were announced, even when it was a four-ring circus. And since I could barely see the scoreboard, the numbers would have been helpful.

In any case, the third rotation saw a hellaciously solid beam set from Rebeccas Bross and a slightly shaky one from Sloan. Tsurumi was clean and charming on floor. Now the lead shifted. Bross took over the lead by a very large margin, with Sloan behind her and Tsurumi in third.

I said to myself, “Well, it looks like Bross has this one in the bag.”

Unless, I added without actually saying it, she has a meltdown on floor. Sloan went about halfway through the rotation and hit a really solid routine. Her tumbling is powerful and precise. She didn’t give anything away. Over on vault, Koko pre=”Koko “>Tsurumi vaulted only a full-twisting Yurchenko. She did it well, so she scored okay, but there was no chance of her catching gold or silver, now. Now Bross was up on floor. I actually videod it:

As you can see, Bross had a bit of a meltdown. The crash at the very end (that is me saying “ ”>Oooh my God!”) was 1.0, plus residual deductions like losing skill value. I thought it would be very close, and it was. Bridget Sloan beat out Bross by only .050. Just like at nationals this summer, if she hadn’t fallen she would have run away with the title! Well, it’s a WOGA tradition to win silver at worlds and then gold at the Olympics, so don’t feel too bad for Bross yet! Both Carly Patterson and Nastia Liukin won world all-around silver before going on and winning the Olympic title. I like Sloan, but I like Bross better. She’s FIERCE.

In 2012, I should still be living in London–I will almost certainly get a job and work here for a few years at least. That means that I am definitely going to the Olympics and watching gymnastics, even if I have to starve myself to save up the money. And when I do buy my tickets, I am not going to pay for the cheap seats! The extra money will definitely be worth it!

21 Nights by Prince and Randee St. Nicholas I consider myself one of the lucky people that actually

21 Nights by Prince and Randee St. Nicholas

I consider myself one of the lucky people that actually saw one of the shows that Prince performed during his 21 Nights at the 02 Arena in London, England in the summer of 2007. In fact I wrote a very detailed blog about the experience (http://bit.ly/1Q6XZC). I’ll sum up that article by saying that this was one of the most memorable experiences of my life, and the greatest concert I have ever seen. This event was so huge that I believe Michael Jackson may have died trying to top him.

The question is, can a book and CD translate to the reader/listener how exciting an event this was? The answer is: partially.

The most successful part of this package (not surprisingly) is the CD called Indigo Nights/Live Sessions CD, which is over an hour in length and is a live recording of one of Prince’s after show concerts at the Indigo2 (a smaller venue within the 02). As if it wasn’t enough that he had just performed a full length concert, on some nights he treated fans to several hours of more music. This was one of the shows I witnessed. The thing that is amazing about these shows is that it is Prince just doing whatever he wants. Don’t expect a stream of hits from one of these shows (although Alphabet St. and Delirious are in the set list).

Real fans appreciate hearing songs from the Graffiti Bridge and New Power Soul albums mashed together, as he does with his mixture of The One and The Question of U. Similarly, the CD opens with a mix of the songs 3121 and D.M.S.R. These songs weren’t hits to the regular population but they are to the “true funk soldiers.”

He plays other artist’s songs as well. This must be a huge honour for the original artists. There is an instrumental version of Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin revealing Prince’s masterful guitar playing. I’d love to play this for some Zeppelin or Hendrix freak and see the look on their face when I tell them it’s Prince. I think this track, more than any other, displays his sometimes over-looked abilities as a hard rock guitar player. Some people have trouble getting past the image, I guess.

Also included here is the astounding version of Misty Blue by vocalist Shelby J. Prince’s excitement about the talents of his band is infectious, so when he declares that “a star is born” after Shelby’s set you know that he’s right – the rest of the world just has to catch up. Saxophonists Mike Phillips and Maceo Parker (who is formerly of James Brown’s band) are highlighted as well in several dramatic solos where they are given room to cut loose.

Prince’s engaging personality and humour is always present on this disc. Sometimes this aspect of his personality is lost in his studio recordings. In some ways you haven’t really heard Prince unless you’ve heard him live. There is one song with a monologue called Just Like You where he talks about what his life was like before he was famous. It’s hard to imagine after all these decades that there was a time that he wasn’t famous. He says that he knew things had changed when a photographer told him he could retire if he could just get a photo of him and Michael Jackson together. This is what Prince’s longtime supporters want. They want to know who Prince really is, and this CD offers a glimpse.

The book, with photos by Randee St. Nicholas, is another story. It has hundreds of stylish photos of the event but it is a little bit disappointing in my opinion. As much as I can relate to Prince on a recording, the book shows the other side of Prince: wealthy, private and aloof. Many photos seem posed and enter the realm of sexual fantasy. That’s great and everything, but I guess I was hoping for something that was more of a documentation of the events that actually happened on stage – or backstage. For instance, several major rock stars came and performed with Prince. I wanted to see pictures of Prince and Paul McCartney together. If not that, can I at least see what he eats? What does a wealthy vegan have on his rider?

There are some circles of people in the fashion world who adore his style because of his boldness. And if you are someone who is interested in fashion and fashion photography then you might find this book interesting. To me the best photos are the ones of Prince actually performing. I’m a musicican so that is what I’m interested in.

I also think the inclusion of song lyrics makes the whole thing seem like an official tour booklet. One of the funkiest songs Prince has done in recent years is Chelsea Rodgers from the Planet Earth disc. But if you aren’t listening to the music the lyrics just seem nonsensical and absurd. With the funky groove, however, they are magical.

Overall, I think it is an interesting package for a CD. The problem is that it was sold as a book. Personally I did not know that there was a CD included until a year after it came out when my wife bought it for me as a birthday present. That disc is worth every single penny she spent ($50.00 Canadian).

London
is a very big town and you have to spend quite a lot of time there to see it properly. I’m quite shocked to see a reviewer posting such (thankfully brief) venom about this place, so am glad to be able to review my own stay there. I stayed in July 2009 for two nights, and I can’t imagine they would have let the place fall to ruin so soon after I left! They are so very proud of the place, and of making guests comfortable – Really excellent hosts who enjoy opening their home up to their paying guests. As well as a really comfortable night’s sleep in a clean a quiet room, I enjoyed a friendly welcome, pointers on what to do in the area, and a lovely breakfast both mornings. The shared bathroom is presumably because you don’t go installing four new bathrooms in a Georgian Townhouse you’re trying to restore!! And I have to say, never once did I have to wait for the bathroom, or experience anyone waiting for me. The shower was a dream – huge and powerful. I didn’t have a bath, but it looked also huge and inviting. The bathroom was large london, airy and absolutely spotless on every occasion. I felt very comfortable there. This place is a gem, one I hope to return to. It doesn’t pretend to be a ‘hotel’ – it is something more special than that, and will be best appreciated by guests who have the sensibility and respect to be able to appreciate the wonderful character of the place and their stay in a couple’s home.

Live Review: Nine Inch Nails/Jane’s Addiction
Venue: 02 Arena, London
Date: 15th July 2009

What’s to be said that hasn’t already been written, spoken or thought by the thousands of people crammed into London’s 02 Arena last Wednesday? It’s rare to see the countless faceless entities of the internet almost be in harmony about something, but a miracle seems to have occurred – the internet seems to have completely agreed on just one word to describe Nine Inch Nail’s final UK headlining show – wow.

First, a few words on Jane’s Addiction. Those who don’t know the relationship NIN share with JA would be forgiven for wondering why they are supporting tonight, given their indulgence in flamboyance and a highly sexually charged performance, seemingly at total odds with the ice cold frustration of NIN. Well, years ago it was Jane’s Addiction who went out on a limb to give the fledgling band a slot on the first 1991 Lollapalooza tour, and now ten years later it is Trent offering Perry Farrel and his cohorts a lifeline.

It is one that they seemingly struggle to take hold of. Whilst the performance is never short of enthusiasm and energy, betraying the band’s advancing years, the music itself is a constant effort. Brash, bold and in your face, at times I’m left feeling that I’ve entered a time warp and I’m watching a remnant of some smoky, drug fuelled and sex crazed seventies stage show. With the two bands seemingly worlds apart, alienated NIN fans seem to struggle with Farrel’s high pitched wailing whilst disparate pockets of Jane’s Addiction supporters seem to be lapping up every ridiculous moment of it all.

As mentioned earlier, there is no such polarization of reaction for Nine Inch Nails. Despite playing a sold out show in one of the UK’s biggest arenas, Trent Reznor still knows how to surprise everyone here. With the house lights still shining, revellers drinking exuberantly overpriced alcohol and the unbeatable sound of enthusiastic chatter reverberating all around the room, a man walks out on to the stage totally unannounced, and starts screaming the words to ‘Now I’m Nothing’. Trent Reznor has just snuck up upon an audience of around 20,000 people.

Reznor’s performance is laced with violent urges. Whilst he might be planning on putting the live show on rest after these final dates, that doesn’t mean he’s going out with a pathetic whimper. If anything, the impending conclusion of Nine Inch Nails as a live act has injected him with a formidable fury, exuding an impassioned performance that even the back of the arena are being buffeted by. Just one song in and Reznor’s unlucky synth keyboard has already been hurled off the stage in a fit of rage, and by the end of the show it’s a wonder the machine is still functioning.

Those who have been with the band since the beginning are treated well, with a set heavy on material from Pretty Hate Machine and The Downward Spiral. Having a whole crowd scream the words “God is dead, and no-one cares” is just one of the powerful moments that Reznor’s set creates, but nowhere is there more of an electric reaction when his special guest strolls out onto the stage. Gary Numan is lavished with praise as Trent introduces him to the stage, and with their blistering covers of ‘Metal’ and ‘Cars’ it’s little wonder why. Numan’s voice is spectacular, and ‘Cars’, despite being the song that threw Numan into the limelight still sounds as edgy now as it ever did.

The band continue to ratchet up the rapturous applause. Drummer Ilan Rubin is mesmerizing to watch, switching from his drumkit to keyboards in a matter of seconds. But it’s all about that man at the front of the stage, who towers above everyone else here tonight in every sense of the word. And as the lights dim, and the audience are hushed the final moment of magic for tonight begins, as the lonely riff of ‘Hurt’ carries across the stadium. Reznor’s performance is just as tearjerking now as it must have been when he first committed the words to record, but this is who he is. Throughout his career he has been honest, open and vulnerable to the world, and it’s that which has endeared him to this vast audience tonight.

If this is the conclusion of a chapter in Nine Inch Nails’ history, then it has been a triumphant ending.

YungAmb Kig{Young Ambassador Kig} real name Kig David is an upcoming artist with loads of stories to tell from his true ups’ & downs’ in life. Growing up on a chicken bone is not a joke especially when you left all alone to feed on the streets. Well this is the story of my life cos’ I{kig} grew up on the lonely streets of C-Town London e16 and survived all by myself when papa wasn’t there for me. I learnt to be a man and was forced to grow up quick with heads’ on high on so much drugs and violence that I had to break off certain coop and drop out of college. I went on a princess’ trust academy course where I learnt to be self motivated and also had my first experience of working to achieve a goal, I was later awarded best entertainer of the year for dancing and singing but not until after the completion of my course did I learn to realise that I wanted to be a rapper when I had my first studio recording within a group of artists{rapper} and although they where my hommies, they still were hating on me cos’ as usual real recognise real so when I dropped my first bars{track}, it was a rap and then the competition begin. Not to brag where am at today but I think my music speaks for itself that I’ve been there done that but here I am still strong with a bonus from God and U able to take your time out to read a litle about me so thanks to you. Don’t get it twisted though cos good music and new sounds are around me so when the time comes, I will deliver the tunes tight & rite. Itz ur boi YungAmb Kig!!

Ese es el numero de presentaciones que tenia MJ en Londres… deben de estar algo preocupados. Estas fechas empezaban el 13 de julio y ya tenian grán parte de la producción lista.

After a slow start to the year Cadbury has now seen sales rising in the UK and US.

Wispa

The confectionary group saw improved trading during April and May, and fully expects to meet forecasts for full-year sales growth. The strong Easter trade and the re-launch of the Wispa bar saw Cadbury gain a good market share.

Wispa successfully returned as a limited-edition product in 2007, five years after it had been axed due to falling sales. After a large fan base came to light they re-launched the chocolate bar as a permanent product with a huge advertising campaign behind it.

Cadburys say that their chocolate sales remained ‘robust’, while gum and sweets returned to growth after the slow start at the beginning of the year. They recently launched, in the UK, a major campaign, on Trident gum packaging, to win tickets to see Beyonce at The 02 Arena. The consumer was given the opportunity to win free tickets to attend the concert every time they bought a pack of Trident gum.

Adios!
