Volume 039: The Jekyll and Hyde of Summer

It’s been a month since I made my last post, been going through school work and project. The weather is still wacky and crazy here in Southern Ontario. One day its cold, raining, and windy, next day its clear skies and scorching sun in 25+ degrees. Very weird indeed. So I’m compiling a rapid fire list of things I observed in the past month:

1. Several celebrities passing away, they will be missed
2. The Leafs actually signing several good players, I’m hoping next season is not a let down
3. People are finally answering about the  Urbana Conference, for a moment I thought I would be the only one going, it will be quite a lonely trip if it was the case
4. Interest rates on banking stink for the moment
5. People at RHCBC had no clue about Urbana, talk about bad word-of-mouth transmission rate
6. Dr. Wong blasting CCF, that was a wake call, I still feel the sting of inaction
7. People gotta learn to drive on the highway with common sense, so many avoidable collisons I see on the 401
8. Mom planning to sell the car and get a new car, she admits the horsepower on the Toyota Matrix is just inadequate (and many family friends wondering we got a weak powered vehicle)
9. The hilarious part is that our Corolla is much more powered and smoother to drive than our older Matrix (and cheaper!), another point for Corolla reputation
10. To my knowledge, no cows got punched during the past month
11. 3 hockey games/practices in two days, gonna get real tired
12. I still think Twitter is just a fad, just like hi5.com, you do remember that one right?
13. Someone mentioned AsianAvenue, I haven’t heard that in almost 9 years, (apparently called AsianAve now and Obama visited it!)
14. I have found students on campus who have no idea what ICQ is, I feel very old!
15. I am the only one in my CS class who remembers (or had) the 3hr exam slots, I feel VERY OLD!
16. When I got my updated student card, I browsed my Ontario driver’s license, apparently I have G class for 5 years now, wow, I never thanked my parents for pushing me to get it back in high school, I had time back then!
17. iPhone 3GS users are complaining about overheating, Apple says its their fault, here we go with the lawsuits LOL
18. Google finally getting stuff out of Beta, which lasted up to 5 years, you feel old yet?
19. The only thing I remember from C4C speech, “Who cares what your stupid Biology prof says!”, awesome wake up call
20. I just discovered lifehacker website, so many useful tidbits, and great place to waste LOTS of time
21. I’m debating whether to get the next generation iPod Touch (I have never owned an Apple product in my life)
22. I was thinking of the overpriced Macbook until I heard about its bad heating issues, now its overpriced and overheated
23. I noticed Amazon.ca carries Zune, but no iPod, hmm
24. Just installed Windows 7 Release candidate on the desktop, it’s fast, and looks slightly prettier than Vista, only had a day to tinker with it
25. I realized that Mozilla Fireworks had themes to change UI of the browser, got some themes and now my web browsing feels “awesome blossom”
26. I started watching the Simpsons again, starting from season 10, I’m trying to pinpoint the exact season/episode that the series stopped being funny
27. My group told me about online citation tools for APA/MLA, kinda wished I had this tool long ago for other courses
28. EA sports decided no more NHL for PC, which of course they did a poor job for several years. I’m very disappointed with them
29. An online survey I did rewarded me a $5 Starbucks card, then I realized I still have to spend money at Starbucks to get a drink (wowza)
30. Missed out on the “Welcome back from Japan, Kevin!” reception, I heard it was only a couple days
31. More folks show up for badminton on Fridays now, that’s good to see, couldn’t play before because not enough people (1 vs self?)
32. Got a dream for a crazy fictional story set in the future (surprise surprise), kinda a warning story
33. Very disappointed in the Blue Jays season so far, it’s like every season
34. Attending my uncle’s wedding in August, should be exciting, haven’t been to a banquet/ceremony in years
35. I still don’t get why Air Canada continues to overcharge, lose money, lose customers, and still acts like a clueless corporation unaware of anything wrong, guess we just let them burn (that way everyone in business class can learn from their stupidity)
36. What I learn at Waterloo: donate millions to the university and get your name on a building, I donate a few bucks and they give me grief, I can only imagine how much trouble they give me when they ask for thousands later on
37. Of the hundreds of people I interact from Waterloo, I still have yet to meet one who likes “PD”
38. I just looked at the mathematics faculty bursary/scholarship list, it should be renamed scholarship list, I don’t see a single bursary there
39. Federal Government sent me a list of 40 scholarships and bursaries to Canadian students out of a few hundred, problem is half the list already passed the deadline, Thank you Canada for giving me an expired list
40. OSAP sent me a letter to pay back my loan, I told them I’m still in school, they said “you should develop good habits, like paying us back EARLY!”
41. UW already asking me to start donating to the alumni fund, I’m still in school! Just like OSAP, “We want you to plan your donations early.” What’s going on here?
42. My mom is trying to get tickets to see a musical in Waterloo, I was shocked. She said don’t worry about price, I told her it’s not price, it’s in Waterloo!
43. Fall term starts on September 14, that’s the latest we ever had a start (thanks to September starting on a Tuesday)
44. Reports from a Blizzard interview of Starcraft 2 coming out this year, I wonder if people will show up for class anymore
45. The Vancouver Canucks remind me of the Leafs (Sundin, Wellwood, Raycroft)
46. I’m divided whether to root for Jim Balsillie and his quest for an NHL franchise, we shall wait and see
47. Still waiting for blu-ray prices to fall down to “reasonable”
48. I only have two albums of music (U2 and Mamma Mia) after I deleted everything else
49. Did some Gmail spring cleaning, deleted a few hundred stored emails, went from 100MB to 42MB of space (there’s that 42 popping up again)
50. I recently watched Diamonds are Forever starring Sean Connery, he looks so old and aged compared to his first Bond film, Dr. No

Epa! En menos de 4 días ya colgué otra foto?! Me sorprendo! ja!

Y bueno, es por una linda (y ñoña) causa: ya nos habiamos tirado la idea con Pablo de ponernos un anillo para el aniversario, pero nada taaaan formal como una señora alianza y esa onda, sino algo más, mmmmm, cool?
Asique hoy fuimos a dar una vuelta por la plaza de Juramento, la redonda, y aprovechamos para comprar los anillos.

De vez en cuando uno encuentra cosas asombrosas hechas de las cosas mas sencillas “Lego” por ejemplo, así es como el trabajo de Nathan Sawaya toma forma y lleva a extremos asombrosos a este sencillo juguete.

El talento de este artista es tan peculiar que el solo se remite a preguntar: “What Should Nathan Make?” (para realizar su siguiente obra)

En ReactOS se están produciendo grandes cambios a nivel organizativo, con el fin de optimizar los esfuerzos y poder avanzar más rapidamente gracias a una mejor coordinación.

Algunos de los cambios ya han sido comentados, como el hecho de plantearnos realizar Releases mensuales hasta,por lo menos, llegar a la versión 0.4.0.

Otro de los cambios ha sido la redefinición del Roadmap, que estaba obsoleta,como ya se comentó aquí.

Y uno de los últimos movimientos organizativos, ha sido la creación de un grupo de testeadores oficiales denominado el “GoldenApps Testing Team”(GTT).

¿Por qué nace el GTT?

Teóricamente las releases son bimensuales,sin embargo en la práctica las releases se retrasaban  hasta casi los tres meses. El problema era inherente al metodo de trabajo para el lanzamiento de la Release. Hasta ahora el método se resumía en: 7 semanas de codificación,creación de la ISO para testeo,descubrir regresiones,búsqueda de los Commit defectuosos,arreglos de las regresiones,creación de nueva ISO,testeo para comprobar que  las regresiones están resueltas,lanzamiento.

Si no se encontraban regresiones se podía cumplir perfectamente el plazo de 8 semanas.Sin embargo,si se encontraba algun fallo el retraso era considerable.

El GTT es una de las piezas claves en  un método mas eficiente.

¿Como lo soluciona el GTT?

Cada semana de codificación(y durante las 7 semanas) son testeadas una serie de aplicaciones denominadas GoldenApps,con el fin de comprobar si alguna ha dejado de funcionar o presentan algun bug no existente anteriormente.

Al ser testeadas semanalmente las regresiones se van encontrando DURANTE la codificación y no DESPUES. Por otro lado encontrar los Commits defectuosos es una tarea mucho mas rápida, pues este nuevo “sistema de control de calidad” permite reducir el rango,donde puede encontrarse el problema, de 3000 revisiones a tan solo 400. Estas ventajas deberían asegurar que el 90% de las veces tras la 7ª semana viniera el Lanzamiento de la Release. El 10%restante esta asociado a una regresión ocurrida en la última semana de codificación.

¿Que son las GOLDENAPPS?

Las GoldenAPPS son un conjunto de aplicaciones que han sido seleccionadas para ser testeadas en ReactOS. La lista de las GoldenAPPS (que no coincide con la lista de nuestro programa Download!) la puedes ver aquí.

Las GoldenAPPS han sido elegidas por su rango de ataque,es decir, intentan abarcar entre todas ellas la mayor cantidad de APIs posibles. Para ello se han añadido un par de aplicaciones extras, y se han quitado de la lista ciertas aplicaciones (repetitivas a nivel de API)del Download!.

Los juegos actualmente no forman parte de las GoldenAPPS pues en breve los juegos tendrán su propia lista.

¿Y las CandidateAPPS?

Las CandidateAPPS son aplicaciones que deseamos ver funcionando en ReactOS y que actualmente no lo hacen. Su seguimiento no es tan estricto (no se realiza semanalmente) pero sí altamente recomendable.El objetivo: ir comprobando su evolución, para tener dichas aplicaciones funcionando lo antes posible. Y obviamente,pasarán a formar parte de las GoldenAPPS.

.Net Framework

Es posible que muchos usuarios desconozcan qué es exactamente el .Net Framework y que su único conocimiento se reduzca a que es “un algo” necesario para ejecutar ciertas aplicaciones. Sobre todo aquellas que avisan con: “Esta aplicación necesita .Net Framework x.x para funcionar”. Más que suficiente.

En la versión 0.3.9 no se podía instalar .Net Framework 1.1, sin embargo y gracias a los recientes trabajos en el Memory Manager(uno de los puntos más complicados, y por lo tanto más delicados de ReactOS), ahora al menos se instala. Y mientras no se reinicie, los programas que necesitan .Net 1.1 parecen funcionar. Sin embargo,al reiniciar ReactOS, el Registro se corrompe. Este es un nuevo Bug que necesitará de tiempo para ser resuelto.

Mono

Si  .Net Framework puede ser “desconocido” para algunos usuarios, entonces Mono es un completo desconocido.

Mono es un proyecto software libre que implementa un conjunto de herramientras libres compatibles con .NET Framework. Es decir, que instalando Mono podríamos hacer funcionar aplicaciones que necesiten .Net Framework.

La buena noticia es que ahora también, y gracias al trabajo en el Memory Manager, Mono se puede instalar en ReactOS. Y,lo mejor,no corrompe el Registro tras un reinicio.Es decir: F-U-N-C-I-O-N-A.

Sin duda alguna tener Mono/.Net funcionando va a ser un apoyo fundamental hacia la compatibilidad con Aplicaciones,permitiendo que muchas comiencen a funcionar.

El diseño de la GUI de ReactOS no es una maravilla, y lo sabemos. Ésta suele ser una de las peticiones más escuchadas leídas en los foros de ReactOS, sobre todo por parte de aquellos acostumbrados a las transparencias de su Windows Vista .

Pero lo que pocos conocen es la evolución de la GUI de ReactOS (de verdad que evoluciona,lo vais a ver) a traves de los tiempos. Asi que como anécdota dejo aquí la “Evolución”. Y al final de la evolución una buena noticia

En realidad ReactOS 0.0.18 no tenía una GUI sino una UI. La G proviene de Graphics, por lo tanto, ReactOS no tenía interfaz gráfica,sino interfaz de comandos. Cuelgo la foto por nostalgia

La primera GUI de ReactOS apareció en la versión 0.2.0. Era una interfaz básica pero el salto,para el Usuario, fue indudablemente increible.

Cansados del típico Cielo o Laguito de Windows que se habían ido incluyendo en las versiones de ReactOS, se cambió al wallpaper Angelus. Además durante estas versiones se intentó hacer  el explorer.exe lo más compatible posible con el explorer.exe de Windows.

La Noticia

Efectivamente hay una noticia relacionada.Una buena noticia.O mejor dicho: DOS.

Gracias al trabajo que se ha realizado en Reactos, ahora es posible aplicar Temas a ReactOS. Ahora,en la versión 0.3.9 es bastante skinnable.El método es *casi* el mismo que utilizarías para ponerle un skin a XP. En breve habrá un pequeño manual.

Pero aquí teneís una pequeña demostración.(Fijaos en las pestañas de las ventanas,los botones Aceptar-Cancelar,etc..):

Las mejoras de esta versión son numerosas, las más importantes ya han sido descritas en este Blog, pero haciendo un rápido resumen:

-RED: Una mayor estabilidad durante la navegación y mejora de compatibilidad con las tarjetas de red.

-RAM:Reducción del consumo de Ram hasta los 32 MB

-Hyperspace Mapping Interface: Una nueva Hyperspace Mapping Interface ha sido implementada,resultando una mejora de la velocidad por encima del 300%

-Object Manager: Las mejoras en los chequeos de seguridad en el kernel ha mejorado el rendimiento un 500%. Se nota especialmente en operaciones con ficheros grandes.

-Arquitectura: Arreglo de bugs en Procesadores Pentium I y MMX

-SSL: Conexión SSL con aplicaciones que la integren.

-SONIDO: Es la primera release con capacidad de reproducir archivos de audio. El Downloader tiene un link para descargar el driver para las tarjetas AC97.

-CMD.exe: Ahora se puede compilar ReactOS en ReactOS. También se ha mejorado excepcionalmente el manejo de Pipes.

-GDI32: Muchos fallos gráficos se han subsanado gracias al duro(por estar muy indocumentado) trabajo en este campo.

Buenas noticias:

Ayer por la noche se realizó el Branch de la nueva versión 0.3.9.

En ella entrarán todas las revisiones hasta la revision 40567, posteriormente se añadirán ciertos Hackfixes para mejorar el comportamiento de la versión final y en breve los testeadores tendrán a su disposición la ISO final para realizar el testeo de las aplicaciones GOLD.

Durante la semana estará disponible la versión 0.3.9 final para los usuarios. Estad atentos

Hemos comenzado a crear el Changelog de la versión 0.3.9. Como ya sabéis es el primero de los pasos antes de lanzar la versión 0.3.9. Generalmente pasa una o dos semanas (o algo más,ahora que estamos en Semana Santa),entre la creación del Changelog y el lanzamiento de la Release.

El segundo paso es el Testeo de una Release Candidate, pero aún no se ha elegido una candidata, aunque está bastante próxima a ser seleccionada.

Las novedades de la 0.3.9 son bastantes:

-Reducción de Consumo de RAM…(aún más si cabe): Ya funcionamos con 64 MB de Ram.

-Arreglos de fallos con los procesadores MMX y Pentium I: ahora se puede ejecutar ReactOS sin fallos en este hardware.

-Sonido: Ahora es posible escuchar música en ReactOS: El sonido aún es experimental, y aunque con Bugs, ya funciona. Será la primera versión de ReactOS con Sonido.

-Network: Tras arreglar varias Race Conditions, ahora el Network funciona increíblemente. Ahora navegar por Internet es mucho más estable.

-SSL: ReactOS permite ahora que las aplicaciones que den soporte SSL (como Firefox) puedan conectarse mediante SSL.

-CMD: Se ha trabajado duro con los Pipes y en mejorar el CMD.exe, ahora los Batchs funcionan genial, y muchas aplicaciones que necesitan de la consola han comenzado a funcionar.

Y arreglo de muchísimos Bugs gráficos.

Lo dicho, una “pedazo” de Release.  Estad pendientes para ser los primeros en descargarla

Firstly, I’ve completed some tasks:

054: Go on the London Eye
Completed 21st August 2008
The first task I completed – on 21st August my girlfriend surprised me with some tickets for the London Eye. We were due to go up at 20:00 (sunset), and arrived in good time, not knowing what the queues
would be like. As it was they were very short, and we were in our ‘pod’ by 19:40. It doesn’t matter that we were so early, the cloud prevented a golden sunset! The cloud didn’t prevent the spectacle of London from above though – that was the task of the rain. We managed to get some good pictures regardless which I’ll link to later.

039: Surprise someone
Completed 27th December 2008
On 27th December last year I proposed to my girlfriend – she was most definitely surprised. We’d only been together 10 months, and we’re all set to get married on 24th April this year! I’m not sure any of the other 100 things will bring quite as much happy as this did

089: Pick up a penny ‘for luck’ every time I see one
Completed 13th February 2009
This is probably the least tangible of the tasks, and one I thought might be a problem (I can’t remember the last time I just noticed a penny on the floor) – but amazingly, on Friday 13th (I kid you not) of February 2009 I found a penny on High Street Kensington underground station, next to a bench I was sitting on. I picked it up, and all the day I had good luck (well, nothing went wrong between finding it and the end of the day at least, but that was only a couple of hours).
I still have the penny, and I’ll pick others up if I find them (don’t know how long each lasts, after all

So, 4 down – not so good seeing as I’m 20% of the way through the time allowed, but I’m sure I’ll catch up. I’m doing these at present:

020: Go 3 months without consuming alcohol
I decided 3 months non-stop was a bit much, so went for 3x 1 month periods instead. I’ve done one month (November 2008) and have two more to plan.

021: Drive an Audi R8
My girlfriend (fiance now!) bought me an R8 driving experience for Christmas – can’t wait! So this one will be completed on 21st March.

026: Rip all my CDs losslessly into iTunes including art work
I’ve done 90% of this – most of the CDs are done (one or two remaining), however there is a hell of a lot of artwork which isn’t in iTunes – that’ll take a good long weekend of google image searches and scanning any which I can’t find (I’m sure there will be some).

028: Do something with my old bicycles
Like all good projects, this one started with taking something apart. I’ve stripped my yellow Specialized Rockhopper A1 FS Pro. I’m going to clean it all up and rebuild it, and then might make something interesting with it after that. I also have an old Orange racer, not sure what to do with that yet…

046: Record everything I eat and drink for 3 months
I’m using www.weightlossresources.co.uk to track everything, I don’t think I’ve managed three continuous months without having a missed day yet, so that challenge persists. It’s a lot harder than you might think – but is certainly an eye opener.

La sede electrónica de la AEAT ha publicado la Resolución de 1 de enero de 2009, del Departamento de Organización, Planificacición y Relaciones Institucionales, por la que se incluyen nuevos trámites, procedimientos o comunicaciones en los que cabe la presentación de documentos electrónicos en el registro de documentos electrónicos en el Registro Telemático General de la Agencia Estatal de Administración Tributaria (1-enero-2009)

Con esta Resolución se ha incluido en el registro telemático general la posibilidad de poder presentar documentos electrónicos relacionados con la declaración (modelo 039) de Comunicación de datos, correspondiente al Régimen especial del Grupo de Entidades en el Impuesto sobre el Valor Añadido. Dicha opción está ya plenamente operativa en la oficina virtual, por lo que ya se puede utilizar.

En el B.O.E. del pasado día 30 de diciembre se ha publicado ORDEN EHA/3788/2008, de 29 de diciembre, por la que se aprueba el modelo 039 de Comunicación de datos, relativa al Régimen especial del Grupo de Entidades en el Impuesto sobre el Valor Añadido y se modifican la Orden HAC/3626/2003, de 23 de diciembre, y la Orden EHA/3398/2006, de 26 de octubre.

Como recordaréis, el nuevo Régimen especial del grupo de entidades fue establecido por el art. tercero, apdo. cuatro de la Ley 36/2006, de 29 de noviembre, de medidas para la prevención del fraude fiscal.

Por otra parte el art. 61 bis del Reglamento del IVA estableció la información de carácter censal que deben comunicar los empresarios y profesionales que formen parte de un grupo de entidades y hayan optado por aplicar el referido régimen especial.

El modelo 039 de declaración censal habrá de ser presentado por quien tenga la consideración de entidad dominante del grupo de entidades, y se utilizará para:

• Comunicar la aplicación del régimen especial de la Ley del IVA,
• La solicitud de inscripción o baja en el registro de devolución mensual del IVA,
• La opción establecida en el artículo 163 sexies.cinco de la Ley del IVA, en cuyo caso podrá comunicar también la opción por la aplicación de la regla de prorrata especial en relación con el sector diferenciado de las operaciones intragrupo, o su revocación,
• La renuncia a la opción regulada en el artículo 163 sexies.cinco de la Ley del IVA, y
• La realización de la comunicación anual prevista en el artículo 61 bis.4 del Reglamento del IVA.

El referido modelo 039 se presentará de forma obligatoria por vía telemática a través de Internet, y se efectuará, con carácter general, en el mes de diciembre anterior al inicio del año natural en el que deban surtir efecto las opciones o renuncias que se comuniquen a través del mismo, con algunas excepciones.

La presentación telemática de la declaración podrá ser efectuada bien por el propio declarante o bien por un tercero que actúe en su representación.

Cuando la declaración censal deba acompañarse de otros documentos, éstos se presentarán en el registro telemático general de la AEAT.
