I installed the fell desktop installation of Ubuntu 9.10 “Karmic Koala” on an ASUS EEE 1000H over the weekend, and thought it might be worth sharing my experiences. First, some screenshots…

The Desktop

The plain-vanilla desktop, with menu’s left switched on so you can see them (I normally auto-hide them on a netbook to give some screen real-estate back).

TweetDeck

The TweetDeck Twitter client runs fine – and it’s an Adobe Air app, which proves Air works fine too.

Google Chrome (with Feedly)

The developer build of Google Chrome working well, and running the Feedly extension.

So what do I think of Ubuntu 9.10 so far ?

• Installation was completely painless. All hardware was detected perfectly
• The video driver is fast – a huge improvement over my previous 1000H experience with Netbook Remix
• All suggested post-install package updates (200 of them!) worked flawlessly.
• Vodafone 3G USB dongle worked out of the box – no driver installation required.

Overall, I am very impressed. I knew it was going to be good after having used Ubuntu Netbook Remix, so perhaps it should not have been so surprising. The whole system feels snappy, responsive – and so far – reliable.

The only problem I have had so far has been plugging an external screen in, and trying to use both the netbook and external screens – it caused an immediate (and repeatable) lockup of the entire OS. Having one or the other stopped the lockup, and it is a known bug – a Google search turned up lots of people reporting the exact same issue.

I’ll write more after using it for a few weeks.

As I was going to install Fedora 12 on my Asus EeePC 1000H, I booted up the Fedora 12 DVD with great excitement; which turned to great disappointment in a few seconds. What happened was that the Anaconda installer did not startup as expected; and I have to admit I have grown very fond off the Anaconda installer.

Being very tired that day I shot off a post on the Fedora Forum in hope to get this solved. And as you probably could see, I got the help I needed.
So with this simple howto I will let you know what I did to install Fedora 12 on my Asus EeePC 1000H; and saved a lot of disk space.

As this is a very brief explanation on how I did it, you are expected to be technical and known with Linux and how to install Fedora.

You need the following:

• 1 Asus EeePC 1000H
• 1 External DVD drive with USB connection
• 1 Fedora 12 LiveCD

Howto install Fedora 12 on your Asus EeePC 1000H:

1. Connect the external DVD drive to your 1000H, insert the Fedora 12 LiveCD in the drive and boot from the LiveCD
2. Double-click on the desktop icon called ‘Install to Hard Drive’ and follow the instructions.
3. When the LiveCD image has been installed to your 1000H, shutdown the computer, disconnect the DVD drive and boot up your computer.
4. Follow the post-install instructions on the screen.
5. Add the RPM Fusion repo(both free and non-free).
6. Open your terminal and execute the following command: su -c ‘yum -y install rt2860′
7. Reboot your 1000H so the wireless driver will get installed, and reboot again so it will work.
   (Do not ask why, but this is how it has always worked for me.)
8. Go to the Fedora Guide for some extra handy tips, but not necessary.
9. Enjoy your 1000H with Fedora 12.

But how do I save disk space?
After installing Fedora 12 on my own 1000H and then later adding all my other favourite crap to it I am “only” using 3.8 GB. Usually when I installed using the DVD and removing as much I could (trust me, I spent 15+ min to remove stuff I knew I would not need), but I still ended up with using about 5+ GB easy.

1. Search the Fedora Forum.
2. Search Google.
3. Ask politely on the Fedora Forum, and be descriptive about your problem.

After installing Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackpole (Netbook Remix Version) and actually being excited that wireless worked out of the box I was very excited. That excitement lasted almost a whole 24 hours until I came home from work today and I ran a series of OS Updates.

After the updates, instead of enhancing the expirience, it degraded it. First of all my touchpad was unresponsive. It went wherever except the place I was trying to move to in the screen. Right click has moved to another location where I still haven’t discovered. My keyboard layout only works on US standard…no ñ, á,é, etc!

After an hour of googling for possible fixes for these and the sound issues, I have found no real solutions or workarounds. I got tired and I turned it off. I surfed Eeeuser.com for a while, but no real posts that gave me something to work with. I hope Ubuntu and Canonical reads this and other bloggers or Asus Eee users.

Any real ideas are welcome. Drop me a line or leave a comment.

Today, in our Linux Page (in Spanish) we posted a brief tutorial about the beta version of Moblin: a new Linux OS, -by the Linux Foundation and supported by Intel to increase the diffusion of its Atom processor- which has been developed especially for MID and Netbooks. Moblin, in its Beta version looks stable and full of features (Wimax included) and it is in constant development. At the moment we suggest to test it on a USB key. For this, after dowloading the .img file we can us imageWriter (Applications – Accessories – ImageWriter). If you need to install ImageWriter, please use Synaptics (System – Administration – Synaptics Package Manager) and in the search file type usb-imagewriter and install this program using the right button on your mouse. In our opinion, Moblin 2.0 beta, is realy well developed, all the menus are intuitive and easy to use and the graphics is more than sufficient. At the moment Moblin guys are testing this new version on Acer Aspire One, Asus eeePC 901, 1000H, Dell Mini 9, MSI Wind, Lenovo S10, Samsung NC10, HP Mini 1010 and 1120NR and we hope they could extend the Netbooks models in the near future. Recommended!

As I had mentioned earlier, my EEE 1000H is powered by FreeBSD 7.2 and so far it has been good. Still haven’t had the proper time to workon the wireless, but so far have got most of my acpi scripts working, so its great. Anyway I am posting another EvilWM screenshot on this Beastie powered toy. Фальстарт!..

Убанту Jaunty Jackalope, официально еще не вышла, но до выхода осталось совсем чуть-чуть. Мне стало не в терпешь, глянуть на грядущий релиз африканского дистрибутива. Версия 9.04 обещает много нового. Подробнее можно прочесть здесь.

На моем eee pc 1000h была установлена ubuntu 8.10, я решил обновить дистрибутив без пере установки . Нажимаем alt+f2 пишем update-manager -d и запускаем механизм обновление.

Обновление длилось достаточно долго, коннект не быстрый да и ноут не шибко обновлял/настраивал/удалял пакенты. Через примерно пару часов ubuntu обновилась.

Первое, что бросилась в глаза, помимо измененной темы оформления – всплывающие сообщения. Запустил pidgin, пришло сообщение – вспомнился growl. Новой системе оповещение не хватает: плавности в работе и настроек… Общее впечатление от нее приятное.

Появился новый апплет indicator-applet. Отображающий информацию от различных мессенджеров.

Претензии возникли к звуку. Играет тихо. Не проблема – виноват уровень громкости lineout, повысил громкость через alsamixer.

Рекомендую установить pavucontrol, для возможности регулировать отдельно громкость каждого потока.

sudo apt-get install pavucontrol

Удобно – давно не хватало. Pulseaudio не тормозит.

Появилась новая утилита помогающия поддерживать систему в чистоте:

Не привычно, что из пункта Система в панели гнома убрали выход из сеанса/ выключить/перезагрузить. Так же не привычно, что alt+ctrl+<– (перезагрузка графического режима) по умолчанию выключен.

На eee pc сетевая карта и wi-fi завелась из коробки. Hibernate пашет.

Система грузится очень шустро, к производительности при первом ознакомлении  претензий не возникло.

Вердикт: Предварительная оценка – 5.

A couple of days back, I got my first Apple product, iPod Touch 2G. After playing with the free apps there in the appstore, I found that in order to install some really awesome apps that there for the iPhone/iPod Touch, one needs to jailbreak his device.

Being a pro Windows Mobile user (check my website Gadgetmix.com and Windowsphonemix.com), I was way too used to the openess and freedom of the Windows Mobile OS. In WM, you can do anything you want and you can access anything you want.

In iPod Touch, everything feels so closed.

• You cannot modify OS files.
• Heck, you do not even know where they are.
• You have no freedom what to store where

True, Apple made it simple for the dumb user because they do not care what is being stored where. Now, I understand why the Windows  users make fun of the Apple platform. It is such a  CLOSED environment. Although I’ve never used a Mac and don’t even plan to use it, I’ve heard it is too a closed OS, where the users have no idea of what is going in the background.

From the past 2 days, I am still searching for an all-in-one file explorer (like the one found on Windows Mobile, Resco File Explorer), which would provide me encryption, zip file support, sorting files, viewing of simple txt files in a single package.

Er rattert und pfeift, mehr tut sich aber nicht. Mein Asus eeepc 1000H ist kaputt. Besser gesagt die Festplatte. Nach dem Asus-Bildschirm beim booten kommt ein Blackscreen mit der Fehlermeldung “Reboot and select proper device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key”. Nun, selbst machen kann ich da herzlich wenig. Also, erstmal den Support angerufen. Im Internet habe ich nur schlechtes darüber gelesen. Aber, oh Wunder: Eine nette Dame arbeitete sich durch den Fragenkatalog und wollte, dass ich das komplette Gerät einschicke. Da ich es aber doch soooo dringend brauche meinte ich ob es nicht möglich sei, nur die Festplatte hin- und herzuschicken. Support-Dame: “Kein Problem.” Nun warte ich auf die E-Mail die mir meinen Abholtermin bestätig und eine weitere die mir sagt wann meine Austauschfestplatte kommt. Ich bin gespannt.

Eee PC 901 vs 1000H…………. Inicializando

For the benefit of those hosting their blogs at WordPress who may have missed these first time around, here is the complete collection of wallpapers I tailored for my ASUS EEE 1000H.

They are all 1024×600 pixels to suit the 1000H native screen resolution.

Vor kurzem lobte ich meinen eeepc 701. Wie fein doch der kleine Begleiter sei und wie zuverlässig Linux nach etwas Bastelei funktioniere. Dann das Aus. Irgendwie hat der 7-Zöller die vielen Updates und Systemwechsel nicht verkraftet. Also ausgetauscht und nun bin ich Besitzer eines eeepc 1000H. Und das Teil rockt wie Harry. Dank einer 160-Gigabyte-Festplatte, habe ich nun endlich meine iTunes-Sammlung im Griff. Apropos iTunes. Auf den Linuxsysteme war das Musikprog nur per Wine zum laufen zu kriegen. Und da ist der nächste Vorteil: Win XP ist das Betriebssystem das für Farbe auf dem 10-Zoll-Bildschirm sorgt. Und: Auch der Mac-User in mir kann sich mittlerweile ganz gut mit Win XP anfreunden.

Nach einigen Updates, einer optischen Aufwertung des hässlichen Grundthemes und dem Einspielen mehrer Programme hab ich nun mein Unterwegs-glücklich-System gefunden.

Auch vom Nachfolger von Outlook-Express, dem Windows Live Mail bin ich angenehm überrascht. Noch nie war es so easy eeinen Account zu erstellen und E-Mails abzurufen. Ok, ein Problem war das bis jetzt nie, aber es ist halt noch einfacher geworden.

Meine hinzugefügten Programme:
VLC, FireFox, Trillian, Skype, Zattoo, Google Earth, Gimp 2, Picasa, Lingo Pad und:

World of Warcraft. Ja ja. Nix neues und für viele eigentlich ein alter Hut. Für mich nicht. Auf dem Macbook, dass wir auch noch besitzen lief es zwar, aber ich hatte nie Lust die rund vier Gigabyte Updates auszuführen. Kleiner Hinweis: Die Grafikwerte des Games sollte man besser ganz niedrig ansetzen, sonst wird aus Spiellust eher Spielfrust.

Einen klitzekleinen negativen Punkt habe ich beim Schreiben auf dem eigentlich ganz angenehmen Keyboard bemerkt. Statt der Taste für die Großbuchstaben komme ich öfter mal auf die seltsame Kombination die komplette Zeile zu löschen. Folge: Wenn ich nicht hinschaue überschreibe ich vorhandene Textteile. Aber ich gewöhn mich sicher noch dran.
