As of noon today (Thusday, October 1), Journal Broadcast Group changed the format of 106.7 FM. Z106.

As of noon today (Thusday, October 1), Journal Broadcast Group changed the format of 106.7 FM. Z106.7, the main competition in the modern-rock segment with Q102.1 FM, has now been replaced with 106.7 The River. The River will be a jockless, music-intensive station that will play the largest variety of any station in Springfield, with songs spanning 5 decades from the 60’s to now. We have more details about the switch after the break.

***UPDATE: We’ve included the official press release from the station after the break, as well.***

Journal Broadcast Group had been conducting a number of listener surveys recently. In these listeners asked for more variety and more music with fewer ads. That’s exactly the goal of The River. The station will play songs from the ’60s until now, will be jockless all the time and will have commercial-free weekends. The station will also feature online streaming, perfect for the workplace (see their website: http://www.1067theriver.com/). It will have five direct competitors in 104.7 The Cave, Star 105.1, Alice 95.5, 105.9 KGBX and US 97.3.

In other news, Z106.7 program director Simon Nytes will now be the new program director of Power 96.5. The station is keeping all Z106.7 staff at this time to work other positions within the company. Former 96.5 program director Valerie Knight will be the new program director for 106.7 The River. And–get this–they will even have the area’s first “now playing” billboard that will display the song currently playing on the station on Southbound Highway 65 near Chestnut Expressway. (It’ll make like a cool game to see how accurate it will always be, haha.)

The very sad news is that our two-hour local show, Rock Talk, that would air every Sunday night, is currently cancelled due to the format switch. We are grateful for the two years Journal Broadcast Group has allowed the local show to run. They even allowed us to extend it to two hours last year. We are very proud of the show and all the music we were able to promote. That’s all we know for now, but if and when we find out more we’ll keep you posted.

Here’s the official press release, courtesy of Journal Broadcast Group:

Journal Broadcast Group – Springfield Operations
Launches The New 106.7 The River

Springfield, Mo. - The Springfield Operations of the Journal Broadcast Group announced today that The New 106.7 The River began operations at 12 p.m. on October 1, 2009. In making the change, 106.7 moves from a “Hard Rock” station to a “Variety” format. The format change is designed to appeal to listeners who want a wide range of music genres and artists without annoying DJ chatter and many interruptions. The best hits from the past 5 decades will be featured. Artists ranging from John Mayer to Madonna to Styx. Springsteen to Cher to 3-Doors Down. Abba to Bob Seger to Kellie Clarkson. Chicago to Nickleback to The Beatles. A question many listeners will have is, “What Will They Play Next?”

Valorie Knight, Operations Manager for the Springfield Operations five-station-cluster is the new Program Director for The New 106.7 The River. Simon Nytes, previously Program Director for KZRQ-FM 106.7, assumed Knight’s former duties as Program Director of sister station KSPW Power 96.5.

In making the announcement, Springfield Operations Vice President and General Manager Rex Hansen said,

“With a library of more over 2,000 songs, The New 106.7 The River now provides REAL music variety unlike any other station in the market. We’re confident listeners and advertisers will appreciate and enjoy the variety offered on the station.”

Valorie Knight added, “We’re really excited about the new format. It’s new to our area, and we’re thrilled that we’re able to bring it to our community. We know it’s going to be a big ‘hit’ with listeners and advertisers.”

The New 106.7 The River is one of five radio stations in Springfield owned by Journal Broadcast Group.

This is a problem about Wythoff’s Game. First, note that since both the players use the best s

This is a problem about Wythoff’s Game.

First, note that since both the players use the best strategy, there can only be two kinds of positions: winning position and losing position. If player A is faced up with a position P and he has a strategy to ensure his victory, then P is a winning position. Otherwise, it’s a losing strategy.

For a certain position P, there are some positions that can be reached in one move, we call these position’s descendants of P. For example, (0,2),(1,1),(1,0),(0,1) are all (1,2)’s descendants.

The most important property is: For a winning position, at least one of its descendants is a losing position. For a losing position, all of its descendants must be winning positions.

Now we can use recurrence to decide whether a certain position P is a winning one or a losing one.

However, Wythoff gave a simple method to do this task. Actually, he gave a formula for the kth losing position:

where φ is the golden ratio 1.618…

Then given a position (a,b), we first make sure a <= b and use floor calculation to find (φ-1) * a <= k < (φ-1) * (a+1). Of course, k can be non-exist at all. If k doesn’t exist, then it’s a winning position. Otherwise we work out b to see whether b = m_k, thus determining whether it’s a losing position or not.

That’s thank to a lot of hard work from bands, venues, and promoters. I mean seriously, look at all the freakin’ touring acts and national acts we’re getting now ‘a days—I’ve NEVER seen this many bands come through this town…EVER. So thank the promoters, venues, sound guys, bartenders, door guys, etc. Most importantly thank YOU for visiting our little site as often as you do (hopefully every day) and please keep it up. We’re needing a little help though. Chris and I are hard workin’ our day jobs due to lack of any cash, so there may be a little dip in posts here and there. That’s because we can’t spend hours and hours each day scouring the interwebs like we normally do. This is where we need your help. And we DO need your help. We think this is pretty important, so please click through and read on and pitch in.

If you’re in a band, have friends in bands, like going to shows, etc and you have music news for anything music in the area…email us at hello@thefourfour.com and let us know! A lot of people have been amazing so far in helping us out by letting us know what they’re up to. This is amazing—thank you! Trust us, there are A LOT of people in the area that are actually interested, so don’t get all modest…let us know what you’re up to and we can broadcast it to thousands of readers every week.

Second, hit our “promote” page. There you can grab a vector version of our logo and slap it on your flyers, your cd artwork, your shirts, etc. (Listen to the latest episode of Z 106.7’s Rock Talk here and see how Yankton Southern’s band, Heartpunch, made the amazing gesture of getting Heartpunch shirts made with TheFourFour logo on the back at Czar Graphics. You might have seen us wearing it around…b/c its freakin’ awesome…and it made our year. Czar has our screen and will cut bands a discount when they get shirts made with our logo on the back…even more details coming on that soon.) You can also nab web banners to put on your MySpace, website, etc to let people know about us. Add a banner or link to us at the bottom of your band’s blogs, MySpace bulletins, etc. Anything and everything helps. Oh, and the big one… mention us on-stage if you’d like.

Remember, we’re also on MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, Flickr, Twitter and all that jazz. Holla at us and help spread word via those avenues as well. So add us on MySpace (and link to us and/or put us in your top friends), Fan us on Facebook and “Share” with friends by posting to your profile or sending direct messages to friends, Follow us on Twitter and re-tweet posts, etc etc. Every little bit counts. Do you like taking photos? Have a digital camera? Share your pics with us on our public Flickr group (and soon you’ll be able to share them on the new website). Maybe you can even help out by helping us hit shows to take pics and/or vids. Just email us if you’re interested.

Chris and I are very hard at work to bring you the 2nd annual FourFourFest. On top of that we have a brand new, pimped out TheFourFour.com 2.0 website that is due out in then next month with tons of great features and even user accounts and band pages. As soon as we have a rundown of features, etc with screenshots, I’ll have them up.

Thank you for reading and keep up all the good work.

Thank you rain storms for hurting out internets. We’re back now and we have this week’s episode of 106.7’s Rock Talk uploaded and ready for your listening pleasure. This week’s guests are Speakeasy and a phoner with Spookie Daly Pride. We’re then visited by our good friends in Bottlefish with some acoustic sweetness and then we feature locals playing the famed christian music festival, Cornerstone. Listen in after the break.

We had a packed 2 hours on Rock Talk this week. First off, Phil Taylor of Future Leaders of the World (of “Let Me Out” fame) stopped by while he was in town to give us an exclusive listen to a track off the new Future Leaders album. After that, Glass Bottom Boat Ride stopped in and talked about their upcoming Dead Day show next Friday that is doubling as a DVD shoot. They also rock us with some acoustic tracks as well. After them, The Screwtape Letters stopped in and showed us some of their new music from their upcoming album and plug their upcoming “fund raiser” show next weekend. Last and not least, we play a song from every band battling it out next weekend at the battle to open for KORN. 7 local rock/metal bands dukin’ it out for the right to open for KORN.

Tons of fun and great music! Listen in after the break.

So last Saturday was April 4, or 4/4, or FourFour. We wanted to do some huge event, but A) no money and B) no time…BUT also a secret C) we ARE working on a few big events that we’ll let you know a bit more about in the upcoming weeks. But we had this crazy idea for this week’s episode of Rock Talk, local music appreciation. You know you can always tune in to 106.7 on Sunday nights at 10 for over an hour of Rock Talk for interviews, updates, live studio performances…and of course music! We love this, but there’s only one problem. We can usually only fit in a few acts an episode. There sooooo much more going on that that. So we felt it would be a good idea to play as much music as we could to give people a glimpse at all the fantastic music we have in our little city.

In this episode, 106.7’s local show, Rock Talk goes for a full 2 hours straight! We play 18 songs! Two hours of local music on the radio! 2 HOURS PEOPLES! We have the whole episode and band list after the jump. Listen in and tell some friends cuz this is one for the books (and only the first of many). More details…

So, we’re pretty excited about this episode, and we’re planning on doing more like it, or even add TheFourFour’s top 4 of the week to the end of the show to highlight some new music, or a few bands with shows that week, etc. What do you think? Let us know below!

So here’s the list of bands we talk about and play in this episode:

Washington Irving
Dirty Old Towne
Spacetones
Jam Room
Queen City Saints
Eric Weiler Band
Troy
Poor Man’s Vision
Erik McGreevy
Burnt Echoes
Glass Bottom Boat Ride
Ilijah
Chris Aytes & The Good Ambition
Cindy Woolf

We apologize for the delay, but WordPress seems to be having some difficulties with the audio file upload system. Well, hopefully this solution will work just fine.

This week we had Chris Aytes stop by. He let us in a some new tracks and performs a few tracks live in the studio. (We super-dig that new track Chris). He also spills the beans on the cause of the band’s temporary hiatus. After Chris, we were joined by Daniel Maple (a.k.a. Johnny Bukkake) of the Never Saints and Urban Legends to name just a few of the many bands and projects he’s involved in. Daniel is hilarious as always, jams a few songs on acoustic, including a Tom Waits cover (nice!). He also made up a Rock Talk theme song ON THE SPOT and it rocks. Listen in because this was a fun one folks.

Thanks for listening. Be sure to tell some friends there is a local show in town and tune in Sunday nights at 10pm or just stream here.

Soooo, remember that thing we did back in November with 45 bands at 9 venues? Yeah, FourFourFest. We

Soooo, remember that thing we did back in November with 45 bands at 9 venues? Yeah, FourFourFest. Well we’re up to something again. If you’re in a band, or you just love festivals and cool stuff like that, you’ll want to read the rest of this.

First of all, sorry about the lack of posts lately. The wallets have been bare for a while now and we’ve had to work extra hours at the real jobs so we can pay rent and the electric bill. Don’t worry though, we’ve been pretty damn busy offline to bring you something awesome. (By the way, bands…we can’t spend all day scouring the web to track down what you’re up to. You need to email us—see contact link to right— your news, recording updates, new recordings/demos/EPs/albums for review, get on our radio show Rock Talk on 106.7, and Myspace event invite us with RSVP with your shows. THNX LUV U!)

So nothing is “official” yet, but we’re up to some stuff. Some awesome stuff that we thinks will help bands and fans alike. We’ve been in talks with My31 and 106.7. We’re going to be working together to bring you a compilation of unsigned bands and a HUGE festival that all the bands on said compilation will play. Now, nothing is finalized. I just want to give you guys a heads up to get going on that awesome new song that you haven’t recorded yet because you just might want to get on this thing.

This is a “soft” announcement perse. Again, this is NOT official or anything like that. The team of people working to bring all this is working hard to secure a venue. I can’t say where we’re looking but its going to be BIG. The kinds of places that can host 16 bands in one place in one day.

We will be taking submissions of one song per band. The song can be no longer than say four minutes and thirty seconds (4:30), but less than four minutes is encouraged. Why? Because submissions will more than likely be played ON-AIR on 106.7 so people can text to vote and/or come to TheFourFour.com to vote. My31 and 106.7 are AMAZING and will be running commercials and having tons of air-time dedicated to the contest. Once we get down to the 16 bands, we’ll begin work on the compilation CD. Thousands will be pressed. Bands on it will get a shit-ton of FREE promotion and exposure through RADIO with 106.7, TV with MY31, and through the INTERNET with 106.7 and MY31’s websites as well as TheFourFour.com and all of our sites to promote the contest and the HUGE event we’re planning.

This is kind of a big deal for local music. We are very excited at this opportunity for local music and thank MY31 and 106.7 for making it possible (b/c frankly, we’ve been wanting to do this for a while now and I mean a while, but c’mon…we’re dead broke and have to work too much at the day jobs).

There will be TONS of sponsors and this thing will be promoted like F*ing crazy! Bands, this is your heads up. Get on it b/c more info is coming soon and the submissions will start being taken soon. So get on it. Get in the studio and get some stuff professionally recorded so it sounds baller on the radio. Yes, I said baller. I actually typed it out, b/c your stuff always sounds better on the radio. It sounds extra-fantabular on the radio if it was recorded, mixed and mastered professionally. So support your local studio/engineer/dude with a nice setup that knows what he’s doing and get some stuff recorded b/c you NEED to and WANT to be a part of this. At least, we NEED and WANT you to be a part of this.

So c’mon, lets do something awesome together.

NOTE: Please DO NOT send us any submissions yet. We will be posting more information once everything is ready to go. Trust us, there’s plenty of time.

This weekend was a blast with tons of great high energy shows. Luckily we always have Sunday nights to cap off the weekend with some great music. This week we had FrogEyeJugBand come in a perform live. Levee dropped in with some “cock rock” and blasted some tunes. Lastly, Jam Room came in and did what they do best…jam. 3 bands, 4 songs performed live in the studio and even more played. Plus all the random convo and show recap/previews you can handle (with a mouth full of sweethearts candies). Listen in after the break.

A) We’re still recovering from the Wes Jeans, Dirty Old Towne and Knife*Death shows. B) We have a radio show called Rock Talk that is hosted by Simon Nytes and airs on 106.7 at 10pm on Sunday nights. So turn your Oscar Party into a Rock Talk party and support some great local acts.

This week we have the guys from FrogEyeJugBand come in and jam some GREAT music live in the studio, as well as talk about some BIG recording plans in their very near future. After them we have the new and improved local “cock rockers” Levee in the studio talking about their big show at Nathan P. Murphy’s next weekend (all ages btw) as they play a few tracks from their upcoming cd (which will finally be available at the show). Lastly we have the awesome guys in Jam Room come in with guitars in-tow. They’ll talk about their HUGE show with nonother than The Schwag and they plan on jammin a few tunes live in the studio.

Listen in and take a drink every time you hear the phrase “Cock Rock!”

Top dropped by the studio the night after Valentine’s Day for Rock Talk on Z 106.7, which can only lead to three things:

1. Hilarious conversation about everything from candy hearts to Jean-Claude Van Damme teaming with Shriners to save the world.

2. Wildly entertaining music was played, all of which you can drink to.

3. There were more beards in the room than in a Band Of Horses video.

We promise that’s not all, either. Listen after the break and revel in the chaos.

Eddie Gumucio stops in to spin some solo stuff, get bullied into a reunion with one of his former bands, talk about his current group The Electrics, and talk all about the awesome FREE month-long concert series you might have heard of called The Queen City Shout. (Looooooonnnnnng Breeeeeeaaaaaaaathththththth)

We were also joined by Storyline. Storyline consists of former members of former Springfield rockers One Star Story. The pop rockers have a sweet sound, a chick singer that’s pretty damn good, and a drummer named Geno that can’t talk into the microphone haha (Just kidding man. Say “Hi” to ya mutha fo’ me!).

Not only this but a Lindberg’s grand opening recap. rocktalk_020809_1
