Silent Night
Monday, December 21st (Winter Solstice)
7:00p-9:00p

This special evening is open to all at no cost. It is a silent retreat (the intention here is for no one to speak…not even the facilitator, Courtney Miller.) Courtney will be there to silently greet participants as they come & go…she will have a hand-out to give to participants that offers suggestions & guidelines for the evening.

This is open-house style, which means that the space will be open for those 2 hours for people to come and go. You are welcome to stay for the entire 2 hours, but there is no expectation…even if you only have 10 minutes to come and experience the sacred silence you are welcome!

What to Expect:
There will be various ’stations’ set up throughout the space, in addition to the one large circle that will be set in the middle of the main yoga space. This is your evening…your experience…do what your intuition guides you to do…or do nothing at all. The following ‘tools’ will be set-up and available to assist you on your journey, should you need or want to use them, but these are just suggestions – feel free to try one or all of them, but ultimately do what your inner-voice guides you to do:

Creation Station: An area will be set with paper, pencils, markers, crayons…sit and silently express yourself through written words, drawings, doodles ~ use this station as a way of releasing whatever is on your mind so that meditation will come more easily. Or, just allow your inner-creativity to flow!
Room to Move: Sometimes the body is holding so much tension that it’s too difficult to sit still and be silent. Movement, and more specifically yoga can be an effective way of releasing that tension so that it becomes more comfortable to physically sit & allows the mind to become more still. While we won’t have any “led” yoga or instruction available on this night, there are yoga mats available and plenty of places throughout the space for participants to use as needed. Just move in a way that is comfortable for you!
The Sacred Circle: In the main space (where we usually hold our yoga classes) there will be a large circle set with plenty of pillows to sit on. Some may choose to walk around the outside of the circle a few times before sitting to meditate (perhaps once to reflect on the year that has passed, once to contemplate your present situation, and maybe a third time to set the tone for a positive future?) Use this space to be still…to watch your thoughts pass by like clouds without becoming attached to any of them. Be still…be silent…be open…Just Be!
Cast Your Worry Stone: Choose a stone (or more than one) from the table of ‘tools’ and carry it with you either as you walk around the circle, or just hold it as you sit in stillness. Spend several moments visualizing your worries, your fears, or even your frustrations ~ whatever seems to be weighing you down at this moment. Then, once you’ve clearly defined what these things are, imagine that you are pouring those thoughts into the stone(s) in your hand. Take your time…feel yourself letting go of those worries as the cool stone in the palm of your hand absorbs them. Once you’ve spent a moment of silence & recognition of this process, place the stone(s) in the center of the circle as a physical representation of LETTING GO.
Sowing the Seeds of Intention: There will be a bowl of ’seeds’ available…choose a small handful to hold either during your walk or while sitting in stillness. Use this tool as a focal point for all of your positive intentions. Visualize the good things you see for yourself in the future…clearly define in your minds eye the positive outcomes you’d like to grow in the year to come. Spend time pouring those thoughts and intentions into the seeds in your hand, then ‘plant’ them in the center of the circle.
Mantra Magic: Repeating a certain positive word or phrase in your mind can be useful in more than one way. Chanting mantra is used to focus the mind on something positive, which can re-direct the thoughts away from negative chatter. This also brings about a positive effect…you become more calm, at ease, and uplifted. Some of us may already have a mantra that we use, but for those who would like some guidance there will be a bowl of mantras set-up. Choose one if you wish and practice chanting it in your mind during the evening…this is especially helpful for those who find it difficult to quiet the chatter & distractions of the mind.

It isn’t often that we take the time to slow down and be still. Perhaps you don’t have a space or opportunity to try these things in your daily life, so please feel welcome to come and explore the benefits that this experience can bring! Hopefully these explanations have shed a little light on what to expect on our first ‘Silent Night.’ Again, this whole list of options are simply that…options. Please come and create your own experience. Just sit in the space and absorb the quiet should you choose!

The Winter Solstice marks the beginning of the Winter season ~ but it also marks the return of the light. Gradually the days will begin to grow a little bit longer…and what better way to welcome the sun than by practicing Sun Salutations? Join Daina Lewis on the evening that precedes the Solstice for what is sure to be a rewarding physical challenge as well as a special way to usher in the new season.

But, what’s so great about 108?
We aren’t the first or only group of yogis who’ve had this crazy idea! In fact, the number 108 holds a lot of significance in many different ways. It is associated with mathematics and sacred geometry as well as being considered an auspicious number within many different cultures (both historically and presently.) There are countless examples of the significance of this number, and I encourage you to seek out the depths of information that is ‘out there,’ but below I’ve compiled a list of a few associations with 108 in order to give a sense of its mystique.

The number 9 represents wholeness and 108 when added together equals 9. 1+0+8 = 9. Interestingly, if you multiply 9 times ANYTHING, the answer is always 9 when you add the numbers together. Try it! 1×9= 9. 2×9=18 1+8=9. 285×9=2565 2+5+6+5=18 1+8=9. 8543×9=76887 7+6+8+8+7=36 3+6=9 The logic behind this is that 9 represents wholeness or God and God times anything is always God since God is all there is
Sacred within Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism and connected yoga and dharma based practices.
A mala usually has beads for 108 repetitions of a mantra.
108 signifies the wholeness of the divinity, perfect totality.
108 is a Harshad number, which is an integer divisible by the sum of its digits (Harshad is from Sanskrit, and means “great joy”)
The chakras are the intersections of energy lines, and there are said to be a total of 108 energy lines converging to form the heart chakra. One of them, sushumna leads to the crown chakra, and is said to be the path to Self-realization.
There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet. Each has masculine and feminine, shiva and shakti. 54 times 2 is 108.
There are 12 constellations, and 9 arc segments called namshas or chandrakalas. 9 times 12 equals 108. Chandra is moon, and kalas are the divisions within a whole.
Some say that 1 stands for God or higher Truth, 0 stands for emptiness or completeness in spiritual practice, and 8 stands for infinity or eternity.
The diameter of the Sun is 108 times the diameter of the Earth. The distance from the Sun to the Earth is 108 times the diameter of the Sun.
In astrology, the metal silver is said to represent the moon. The atomic weight of silver is 108.
According to Marma Adi and Ayurveda, there are 108 pressure points in the body, where consciousness and flesh intersect to give life to the living being.
Many Buddhist temples have 108 steps.

As mentioned, there are literally countless examples of what makes the number 108 so special & significant to so many people. However, the point of this exercise is primarily to engage in a moving meditation…to repeat this series of postures over & again in a way that creates a rhythm…to fall into a focus on the breath alone so that the mind can achieve a state of stillness while the body moves with grace in and out of these postures.
This will be a physical challenge, but Daina will be providing modifications for those who need it, as well as some tips on conserving energy. She will also provide ways of keeping count for those participants who are interested.
This event is free and open to all those who are up for the physical challenge. Please bring a bottle of water with you so that you won’t have to disrupt your flow. (That being said, you can of course take breaks as needed!) Come and enjoy this unique opportunity…Daina is an excellent source of encouragement and would love to assist you in this challenge!

It. Happened.

I entered “Changing My Ways” into a contest called “Tune My Life.” (You can listen to the song I entered here.) From their own website, here is some more information about the campaign:

Music Moves.
If you’ve ever wanted to do good with your music, to move someone with your lyrics, here’s your chance. Through the power of song we want to help young women and men make better choices. Define goals and reach their potential. Live healthier lives. Through this creative effort, we can speak to these young people in a way that should inspire change. That should empower them to take control of their lives and their futures. That should make them recognize that the time to tune their minds, their lives and their relationships is now.

Tune is a movement about self-adjustment and self-awareness. A shift in how young people take care of themselves today and in the future. Just as an instrument was never meant to be played out of tune, our lives and bodies were never meant to either. The time to Tune starts now.

They selected 8 winners for their campaign to begin in 2010, and I am one of them!

I will have the opportunity to spend a couple days in Lincoln, Nebraska, record my song with producers and studio musicians there, and be interviewed about the song and the stories in my life that influenced it. And bonus? This spring when the campaign is in full effect I will probably have the opportunity to do some live performances and radio interviews.

All I’m saying is, WAHOO!!! Thank God! It is so encouraging to have the chance to use my music for good, to have the flexibility to enter contests such as this one, and to experience new and exciting opportunities in the music realm.

Unknown too me at the time that I was reaching universes beyond my own, I recorded the events that were unfolding before me and posted them in various sites across this information highway. Some of you reading this may have experienced these events or something similar if you are of my universe. Many of you have not, and in fact, know nothing of where I come from. For all intents and purposes I am an alien too you and this is our first contact, a warning, a prophecy of what our species is capable of. I urge you from the bottom of my heart to continue or begin reading the tragedies that have befallen my planet, my species… my friends and family… learn from our mistakes. Know that it isn’t too late for you to change the world you live in too a better place for ALL Earthlings too live, grow and experience life together to the best of our capabilities. If you are reading this, and come from a world where harmony and understanding already exists, then it is only your tears and respect that I wish for our fallen brothers and sisters. An infamous group of artists from my universe, of the early sixties, once sang “All You Need Is Love”. That’s all you need, to realize we have been mistreating each other, corrupting and taking advantage of each other. It’s all you need to forgive each other and start again.
