“Excellent TV”
Update May 3, 2009:

My original review of the TV was negative due to a problem of dimming during dark scenes. But few days ago Sony released a software patch to correct the problem and it worked for me. Now, the auto dimming can be turned off by setting the “Adv. Contrast Enhancer” to Off. Also, even when it’s turned On, it doesn’t behave like it did pre- patch, it now dims gradually rather than abruptly and it doesn’t dim as much as it did before. Thank you very much Sony, I’m updating my rating to 5-star.
I’m very happy with the TV now that the auto dim is fixed. If you own the TV and having problems with the dimming, go to the support section of Sony’s site to download the patch and the instructions on how to apply it. You will need a USB thumb drive formatted in FAT32, but if you don’t have it, Sony will mail you one if you call their customer support.

When I purchased this TV few days ago, there were no reviews here since it’s just been recently released into the market. I, however, looked at the reviews of the previous model (KDL-40V4100) and didn’t find any serious complaints so I went ahead and purchased this TV. I regret my purchase and will explain why.

This is my third LCD TV — the others are early generations LCDs from Sharp and Sony and they are still working great, but they are no match for the picture quality of this new Sony. There are a lot of good things about this TV and I would have given it 5 stars if not for one serious flaw.

The TV dims during dark scenes. And sadly it doesn’t do it gradually, it happens abruptly 6 seconds after the start of a dark scene and it returns to normal lighting abruptly about 0.35 seconds after end of a dark scene. It seems to happen regardless of the source of input (I tested it with composite, and HDMI) and it happens on broadcast channels and cable and regardless of the “picture mode” and other video settings. There is no way to disable it. If you’re watching a movie with lots of dark scenes, it’s going to be a very annoying experience.

Take this example, while watching a documentary on first gulf war, there was a lot of night vision camera scenes and the TV keeps dimming during the lengthy dark scenes and when it does that, you can barely make out any details even with Gamma set at max. The dimmer kicking in and out is annoying by itself, much less the picture quality when it dims.

I contacted Sony support and they seemed clueless and recommended I initiate a repair request. I did an internet search only to discover many Bravia models suffer this problem. I initially thought I had a defective unit, but now I think it was intentionally designed like this.

“Excellent TV, Auto contrast can now be turned off!”
First things first, THEY FIXED THE AUTO-CONTRAST! I have nothing but good things to say about this TV. Do not be fooled by the 1 star ratings. All those 1 star ratings complain about the auto contrast/brightness feature which could not be turned off, but SONY FIXED IT ALREADY in the newer units or a software update via sony.com will add the controls to turn the function off.

With that biggest gripe fixed, this TV has outstanding visual clarity and the color saturation is beautiful. Black levels are excellent on this non glossy screen. You can’t go wrong with a Sony and the software update shows they are listening to their customer base. No dead/stuck pixel, great viewing angles, 120hz refresh is great for sports, but in my opinion, not for movies. Excellent TV, I would buy another one of these without hesitation, superior when compared to the other brands that offer the same features. The Bravia V series lives up to the Sony name and quality standards you would expect. Deserves all 5 of the stars it’s rated.

“Best in class image quality”
I chose this TV after spending about an hour in each of two different Best Buy stores, comparing the image quality on different TV sets with different in-store HDTV feed. It is my firm opinion that this TV is best-in-class among non-LED unit; I am particularly impressed with the contrast and color balance.

The only competitor is Samsung series-5 or series-6 HDTV. However, after comparing the Samsung and Sony for two hours, I found that both are very close in terms of contrast (and very impressive), but there is one important point where Sony was ahead: I found the skin tones to look much more natural on the Sony. If you watch a lot of movies like I do, this makes a big difference. Samsung series-6 had terribly over-saturated colors in store, worse than series-5. Now, of course this could be due to poor setting on the Samsung TVs, but I did go to two different stores, and results were the same. Also, the Samsung had severe motion artifacts on high-contrast material. To be fair though, some W-series Bravia had monstrous motion artifacts on low-res feed, but this V-series model seemed to be the best (better than the more expensive Sony models).

The contrast is so good the objects look almost 3D (same with the Samsung, which is excellent as well). The menu system on the Sony is great, easy to navigate. Can’t compare other features, since I don’t own a Samsung set.

There are a couple weaknesses, which may or may not be attributable to the set itself:

1) Switching between HD and non-HD TV channels sometimes takes a couple seconds; sometimes the switch does not occur, requiring to turn either the cable box or TV off and back on

2) If I route the sound from the DVD players into the TV via HDMI, and back from TV to the amp via RCA interconnect, audio disappears sometimes, I have to pause the movie off and back on. This could be the fault of the DVD player – I have no clue.

3) With completely black screen input to the TV, the lack of complete low-luminance uniformity across the screen becomes noticeable. Then again, why would I care?

Summary:

Pros: impeccable contrast, color balance and image quality. None of the more expensive units had better balanced color. Perfect on-screen menu navigation.

Cons: strange channel switching problems between HD and non-HD channels – could be the cable box problem. DVD audio occasionally disappears if piped through the TV set via HDMI (could be the DVD player issue, but it appeared with two different Panasonic DVD players).

Amazon is the BEST when it comes to price, delivery and customer service. The TV was delivered in less than a week although initially it showed delivery after a month.

The picture quality is exquisite, colors are unbelievable and the aesthetics of the product design excellent. Watching HD quality videos, channels was an amazing experience in itself. Having a red eye in the morning is a given side effect !

Ethernet connectivity and Streaming videos is the future and I really like the fact I don’t need another device to watch videos. Amazon on Demand, Netflix and most importantly Youtube takes care of most of my need. Now only if it could have a browser built in and an ability to connect a blue tooth keyboard, it would make it a complete package.

Streaming thru a media server is easy, so is connecting thru the USB. Having access to HDMI makes it a breeze to connect and remove accessories.

This is a great product!

I’m just amazed at the quality of the picture in HD.

The color and the picture is so rich and vibrant you don’t even want to watch the regular channels.

Even the picture in SD is sharp. Better than I expected.

The sound is excellent from it’s four speakers and 20 watts of power.

The border around the TV is slim and sleek, so when it’s hanging on the wall it doesn’t distract your eyes from the picture.

Voilà maintenant qu’on nous sort les 240hz…  Image encore plus claire qu’on nous dit.

LG a annoncé il y a un an avoir mis au point une télé 480hz.  Le problème pourquoi un an plus tard on ne la voit pas sur les tablettes… la récession.

Les stocks des télés déjà sur le marché ne se vendent pas bien donc les fabricants doivent attendre avant de révéler de nouvelles technologies en matière de télé.

Comme consommateur si vous pouvez vous en passer pour l’instant attendez.  Je vous dirais qu’à l’automne 2010 les télé 120hz seront 15% moins cher et les 120hz 25% moins chères qu’aujourd’hui.

Sincèrement ça prend des yeux de faucon pélerin pour pouvoir la différence entre une télé 120hz et 240hz.

Chez Future Shop, à 1 000$ la télé 42 pouces HD LG 1080p et 120hz ça vaut la peine d’attendre un an pour se procurer la même télé à 850$ l’an prochain.

Son équivalant 240hz est à 1 300$.  Ça vaut la peine d’attendre un an et de l’avoir pour 975$.

Autrement dit le prix que vous voyez pour les 120hz aujourd’hui seront les prix des 240hz dans un an.

Les 480hz s’en viennent et après on ira dans le plus mince avec la télé à DEL.

Mais qui veut réellement payer 2 199$ pour une télé à DEL de 240 hz alors que dans un an vous verrez les télé à DEL à 30% moins cher qu’aujourd’hui ?

Attendez je vous le dis vous ne serez  pas déçu.

Bon je peux me tromper.  Surtout si le dollar canadien devait s’effondrer.

Mais j’ai confiance à ma prédiction.

Fick min 120hz samsungskärm igår, en dröm att spela på. Saknaden mot den gamla 60hz är dramatisk. jag klappar mig själv på axeln att jag inte väntade med detta. nu kanske det blir roligt att spela bf igen. på riktigt.

TruMotion 120hz is one of the main features in this LG 42″ LCD panel. What TruMotion is without going into techie details is; any visible shaking or movement is literally cut out to give a smooth follow through on the pictures’ delivery. Its mind blowing! I don’t know if anyone agrees with me, but TruMotion almost seems like everything, whether you are watching a show, sports, or a movie, is playing in fast forward. Really it isn’t. People who are moving directly from the old tube, non HDTV TV’s will notice this the most. The quality difference is uncanny.

TruMotion is TRULY revolutionary.

Now I find Samsung LN46A650 46-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with RED Touch of Color from amazon and I read about that ,I think that wonderfull.

Bought this TV in early January from Amazon. Picture is awesome, sound is good ‘TV’ sound.

This is my first HDTV, easy to use right out of the box.

Blue ray is just perfect. You can’t go wrong with this HDTV.

The 650 does have a very glossy / clear screen which adds to the great picture but if you have a lot of light source in the room you may want to consider a different set, but it has to be a lot of light (natural or artificial) when you typically watch TV.

Would like to say that I truly am enjoying the great picture on this TV.
The swivel base make connecting it to exsisting componets quite easy.
Priced it in several stores and amazon’s was the best.
The men that delivered the TV were very polite and made sure that they did not make a mess by tracking in snow and dirt on the floor and rug by taking off their shoes.

Best Purchase Ever
My husband and I had been doing research for quite a while before purchasing our Samsung 46″ LCD 1080 with 120HZ TV. We found an array of prices and features on all different brands but narrowed it down to Samsung because of the ratings that it was given. I can’t say enough about the product and also the ordering and delivery service. The TV is amazing. The picture is crystal clear almost 3-D. The delivery was easy — they set it up and also programmed the remote and it was ready to go when they left. I would highly recommend both the Samsung brand (which we have had previously) and also the easy and hassle free ordering process with Sixth Ave. Electronics through Amazon.com.

This was my first big item purchased on amazon. I was a little leary to spend that kind of money on line, but it was truly a great experiance. They delivered it right to my livingroom, and checked it for any flaws. Will for sure buy from agian. I recently purchased a Samsung LN52A650, and WOW. This TV has a great picture. I have watched many high def tv’s over the last year, and this Tv has put them all to shame. Speakers aren’t that great but I have srround sound anyway, so it doesn’t really affect me.

Received my order of a Samsung LN52A650 52-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color about three weeks ago. Had done a lot of online research, plus visited big box stores. Amazon.com offered the best price (including delivery), and although I had never purchased such a large item through them before, I have made many purchases through them and have always been satisfied. This TV is everything I could have wanted and more. Delivery was made as promised, the TV unboxed and set into position by the driver, and we have been enjoying it ever since. I would not hesitate to recommend this set to anyone who wants an excellent picture and great sound.

At the Sony dealer show in Las Vegas this week, several new product lines for home theater design were disclosed, including , networked Bravia HDTVs Blu-Ray players, A/V receivers, and Home Theater Systems. Though these exciting upcoming releases have been introduced, most of them will not be available for purchase until later this year.

The latest version of networked Bravia LCD HDTVs has been dubbed the W-series. The TVs from this series use Motionflow120Hz technology and the BRAVIA Engine 3, which both contribute to a smoother, clearer, sharper picture. Models include the 52-inch KDL-52W5100, 46-inch KDL-46W5100, and 40-inch KDL-40W5100.

Among the Blu-Ray players that were shown are a couple of stand-alone players, which range from $300-350. These models are the BDP-S360 and BDP-S560, which both deliver full HD 1080/60p and 24p True Cinema output and will be available summer 2009. Two other players are the DVP-FX730 and DVP-FX930, portable DVD players that are priced at $130 and $190 respectively.

The HT-SS360 is an integrated A/V receiver, which supports full HD 1080p video and high-resolution audio, costing $350 and available in May 09. In addition, the STR-DN1000 receiver ($500) is available July 09 and includes four HDMI inputs and three component inputs, analog connections, and S-Air technology. Other models of this receiver range from $150-300.

The newest Sony home theater systems include models BDV-E300 and BDV-E500W. These are Blu-Ray home theater systems which boast wi-fi capability for using BD-live access and S-Air wireless audio compatible systems. They also feature Sony’s Digital Media Port which allows for music playback options for diverse accessories. The BDV-E300 costs $600 and is S-Air ready, but optional modules must be purchased separately. However, the BDV-E500W costs $800 and is integrated with various S-Air capabilities, which allow audio to be transmitted up to 164 feet away from the main system for rear surround sound speakers or up to 10 AirStation devices in the home. Three other home theater systems presented were the DAV-HDX587WC, DAV-HDX589W, and DAV-HDX285 systems, which range from $300-430, run on 1,000 watts, and include a five-disc DVD/CD changer.
