GRID COMPUTING

The recent explosion of commercial and scientific interest in the Grid makes it timely to revisit the question: What is the Grid, anyway? I propose here a three-point checklist for determining whether a system is a Grid. I also discuss the critical role that standards must play in defining the Grid.

The following conversation took place between a friend and I.

It’s about this girl that has been crushing on me since February 14. This post is really high school and some might find this… Obnoxious. Marginally.

I: This is getting fucking repulsive. She picks the last seat in the Organization Committee just because she thinks I’m fucking there, and then she drops out because she finds out that I couldn’t join because (Drumroll) She took the last seat. Night school, she’s right next to me everywhere I go. Fuck!

Cue passerby pensioners praying for my salvation from eternal damnation.

Friend: (Chuckles)

I: She’s like a fucking tumour! Everywhere I go, it’s on me!

Friend: I think you should like her.

I: (This is me facepalming myself epically) Why?

Friend: I don’t know. Because she likes you.

I: She’s been crushing on me for about a year. I’ve shown no interest. She’s a fucking persistent little bugger. It’s not like math. You can’t just keep hitting at a problem until you get the solution. You hit, and you walk away, and you see what happens.

Friend: But why did you change your seat away from her? She’s going to be heartbroken man!

I: @##?. That’s the whole point.

Friend: (Thoughtfully remembers that I can be quite a dick.)

I:  I’m not being heartless. I swear I’m not. If it’s been going on for a year, there’s something to it. I’m just a fucking distraction from her life, just another ‘thing’ to keep her occupied. I’m her fucking hobby. If I’ve broken her heart today, then she’s going to go home and cry the shit out of her eyes.

She’s going to fucking hate me because I remind her of her inadequacy.  I was another mantlepiece on the shelf that she couldn’t reach.

But when she’s done crying, tomorrow will be the brightest day she’s had in a while. Her breakfast bowl of cereal is going to taste like a spoon of caviar, she’s going to avoid the row of roses that she usually crushes everday as she walks to school, but then soon enough she’ll find another distraction.  And someday someone is going to come and sweep her off her feet, and treat her like the woman she is, putting an end to ALL her little fucking distractions. But it isn’t me.

Friend: (Gasp). Whoa. You need to get stoned. But… You know what?

I: What?

Friend: You’ll find what you’re looking for too. Soon enough. It’s going to come, and you’ll be happy. You doubt it but you’ll remember what I’m saying soon enough.

On a totally polarizing note:

I came across this Youtube Channel called Internet Killed Television or CTFxC which stands for Charles Trippy Friend Core. I know, facepalm yourself here and continue. Awesome channel that follows a couple that is travelling around the world. The dude is Charles and the chick is Alli I think… Anyways, I usually don’t youtube shit except for if its failblog, but there’s something about them that’s so undeniably real. It’s not like that sitcom love type of thing or even that breed of love that we all got a dose of in Titanic. It’s just real. It’s just Charles Trippy and his girlfriend and their dogs goofing off and doing the things that they love without a care in the world.

It’s the ignorant ‘you’re the only one in the world, babe’ love that we all die to have. It’s like they own one another. I cringed at their cover of 1234 of the Plain White T’s because they were so in love. It’s kind of that sickly sweet taste you get when you’ve swallowed a spoonful of sugar (I know I’m not the only one that does that.)

Bottom Line: They’re great, they’re awesome, go watch them, they’ll make your crappy day feel better.

Synn and I have been watching a lot of Sesame Street lately on the computer with Tristan, who, by the way, stares transfixed by the singing and dancing.

We’ve even caught him humming along to some of the tunes, although it sounds like a tone deaf someone humming at this point in time and nothing like the Pavarotti that we thought we had. Sigh.

It does seem like he’s keen on being a Birdketeer, though:

Beleza, depois do Elias ter reclamado que eu fiz um post de música de mil novecentos e vovó de peitinho duro, resolvi fazer uma coisa mais atual. A gracinha da foto aí de cima é Feist, uma cantora canadense indie. E o engraçado é que o nome dela é esse mesmo, Leslie Feist. Ela é canadense, tem 33 aninhos e canta bem direitinho.

Os pais são ambos meio artistas, o pai, pintor expressionista professor da Faculdade de Arte e Design de Alberta e da Universidade Mount Allison. A mãe estudante de cerâmica. Os pais se divorciaram pouco depois do nascimento dela, então ela se mudou com a mãe e o irmão para a casa dos avós. Ela possui dupla cidadânia, pois o pai é americano. Apesar dela ter dito no The Colbert Report que a cidadania norte-americana é parte de um acordo com a Apple (e ainda tem senso de humor a menina).

Ela veio fazer sucesso mesmo em seu terceiro álbum solo, com a música “1 2 3 4″ que vendeu horrores no iTunes, tudo por que a música foi usada no comercial do iPod Nano, em 2007. Hoje ela continua fazendo sucesso no Canadá, principalmente, ganhando prêmios e tudo mais. Vocês também vão reconhecer a voz dela na propaganda do perfume da Lacoste, que tem um cara pulando nos tocos de madeira perto do mar, essa música é Mushaboom. E justamente essas que coloco aqui pra vocês

Uma coisa que reparei no clipe de 1234 é que ele parece ser filmado todo em uma só tomada, reparem:

Madame hat mal wieder eine total stressige Woche, allerdings meist positiver Stress. Aber war gestern sehr bezaubernd, da ich jemand neues neben mir sitzen hatte und sie so aufgeregt und dennoch so niedlich und unbeholfen war. Ich war dann eher die ganze Zeit damit beschäftigt ihr Tips zu geben und ihr zu helfen, wenn sie nicht weiter wusste. Nach der Arbeit dann die übliche Bahnfahrt – alle immer etwas hyperaktiv und hysterisch, aber immer wieder lustig. Als ich dann endlich zu Hause war kam dann das schönste Erlebnis des Tages. (Nach der Verfolgungsjagd mit der Polizeit) ♥ Denn: Madame hat von 0Uhr bis 3:09Uhr mit Marvin telefoniert. Irgendwie verflog die Müdigkeit ganz schnell und wir waren wieder hellwach. Es tat mir nur wahnsinnig leid, dass Monsieur schon 6 Uhr aufstehen musste, weil ich kann ausschlafen und muss nicht zur Schule – er schon. Der Abschied fiel schwer und danach konnte ich sowieso nicht einschlafen und war noch weniger müde als vorher.

This year’s choice is The Four Horsemen by Metallica.

Last year I sent 1234 by Feist. I did have a few in that year which had more than one number in the title. I think I kept to the rule that I used the last number in the title for the day.

In 2007 I sent a classic bit of comedy, rather than a song, as I happened to have an mp3 copy of Monty Python’s Four Yorkshiremen sketch.

One of the cutest songs I’ve ever heard, the ukelele just makes it that much better.  I found this a couple months ago but never got to posting it here.  I can’t stop listening to this again!  I looooove this!  So freakin’ cute!

La fabulosa, excepcional, increíble y bonita Leslie Feist cantará en el marco de festejos de los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno de 2010 en Vancouver, Canadá, que como ustedes saben es su país natal.

Primero será en el 16 de febrero en la Whistler Celebration Plaza al aire libre, sí, en un evento gratis (¡¡¡¡!!!!). El 17 de Febrero, conocido como el Día de Alberta, Feist estará tocando en The Orpheum. Los precios son $49.50, $42.50 y $37.50.

Por cierto un dato interesante. Cuando Feist tenía doce años bailó junto con 1000 niños en la apertura de los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno en Calgary 1988. Según ella esto le sirvió de inspiración para el video “1234″ dirigido por Patrick Daughters, y como no tenemos vídeos para constatarlo, a excepción de la foto que acompaña a esta entrada. Pero si hay vídeo de su edad quinceañera cuando estaba con su banda Placebo, muy diferente a la Feist actual.
