I’ve seen computers as a tool, a toy and something I’ve totally coveted for close to 25 years. I was shopping for computers back when you HAD to order them in a magazine. You couldn’t get them anywhere else. The idea of a computer store was a sheer novelty.  I was always searching and hoping to find a way to get the next best and biggest computer, the one I thought I always wanted has always been out of my price range and something I would have to wait for.

My first computer was a Commodore 128 (128 for 128 K of RAM memory)which my parents spent $250 for one Christmas. Bar none, the best Christmas gift ever and one that would unknowingly direct me into my current career. I spent the next 6 months on my paper route saving enough money to by myself and 5 1/4′ floppy disk drive. Until then I ran all my programs off a cassette tape drive. Eventually I had enough stuff including a 14.4 kbps modem that I ran a bulletin board on. (1986) Take that, Al Gore who invented the internet!

Since then I’ve spent thousands upgrading and buying new machines. To play the coolest games or to hook up video equipment, make it faster, then get a bigger something or other, then get a smaller something or other. About 8 months ago I started to realize I hadn’t fallen into my pattern of shopping for fun toys when I get bored. In fact those direct emails I’ve been getting from Tigerdirect.com and Apple are really starting to get annoying! Those mailers from Microcenter have been shredded confetti even before I take a peek at them. And now I’m wondering why they’re not being very green by sending anything to me.  I’m sure they know I haven’t been back in a long while, given all of my data on their loyalty program.

Just about anything I really want to do on a computer honestly only takes about 1/3 of the resources of anything that costs less than $700.  I’m almost having a mid-life crisis realizing that either my activities are bordering on the old and boring or maybe technology has just surpassed me. It’s a little scary, since for so long I’ve had an identity as the guy who loved computers for so long… now that nothing special.

And like an ailing Mel Gibson my last words trickle out of my mouth….. “Freeeeeeeeeddooooom!”

Zvonul conform caruia Microsoft lucreaza deja la noul sistem de operare care ar putea avea suport pentru 128-bit a pornit de pe LinkedIn. Mai exact, un angajat Microsoft, Robert Morgan, Senior Research & Development, si-a updatat profilul si statusul contului cu cateva detalii despre Windows 8. Conform angajatului Microsoft, in prezent se lucreaza la cateva proiecte pe termen mediu si lung in care este inclusa si cercetarea compatibilitatii arhitecturii 128bit cu kernelul Windows 8 si Windows 9. De asemenea Robert Morgan mai mentiona ca in prezent se formeaza relatiile de colaborare cu Intel, AMD, HP si IBM pentru noile sisteme de operare Microsoft.
Redam mai jos in original mesajul care aparea in statusul din contul LinkedIN al lui Robert Morgan:

“Robert Morgan is working to get IA-128 working backwards with full binary compatibility on the existing IA-64 instructions in the hardware simulation to work for Windows 8 and definitely Windows 9.”

Windows 8 va aparea cel mai probabil in 2011 sau 2012 iar Windows 9 in 2014.

Here are my predictions for the future iPod Touch. I think that it will have a camera, possibly a larger screen, it will be a little faster, different look (maybe), and 128GB. Please comment telling me what you think the future iPod Touch will be like.

God bless my brother David for trying to ‘improve’ me via my list. He is very clever and knows all sorts of important political and economic type things (I shall be getting him to help me with 128!) whereas I once had to admit to him I’d briefly forgotten who was the Conservative party leader (in my defence they’d been chopping and changing for a while!) and that I have forgotten on more than one occasion that Tony Blair isn’t the Prime Minister any more.

His suggestion (93) that I learn a constant to at least 25 decimal places is going to be an interesting one. On one hand I love maths and have a freaky ability to remember miscellaneous numbers and useless bits of information, on the other however I’m hopeless at remembering anything useful or remembering things on purpose.

I’ve decided to try to learn π (pi) to at least 25 decimal places because I learnt it to at least 5 for A level maths (and like most of the A level maths syllabus I’ve not used it since then). For the non-geeks amongst you,

Pi or π is a mathematical constant whose value is the ratio of any circle’s circumference to its diameter in Euclidean space; this is the same value as the ratio of a circle’s area to the square of its radius. The symbol π was first proposed by the Welsh mathematician William Jones in 1706. Obvious when you think about it isn’t it really?

More specifically in this case, π is 3.1415926535897932384626433 to 25 decimal places. Eek!

So far my attempts at learning it consist of me writing it down (wrongly at first oops) on a post-it note. Maybe I should add ‘learn a proper memory technique’ to the list…

I don’t remember where I heard of YACHT. But it was a while ago. And now they’re finally getting recognition. And you can tell. Comparing songs like this to their early material (like Healthy Student), you understand the change that they’ve gone through. While adopting a woman for softer vocals, they (or he rather) have taken on a complete new sound. And a sound which is proving properly. Out of the multiple reviews that I have read on their most recent album See Mystery Lights, I am yet to see a negative one.

This song is difficult for me. As it’s pretty much unclassifiable. While mulling over every genre I know, I can’t settle on any that this fits into. It’s not depressing, it’s not particularly uplifting. But it’s very new. And I like new.
It has a bloody weird video too. Completely pretentious art student types have obviously had a massive input. But I love that. It’s modern art, and is just subtle enough not to be a chair in a room that you have to make ideas about for yourself. It’s beautifully shot, edited and well thought out.

The growing popularity in YACHT may never reach the UK. Just like with many other bands like Explosions In The Sky for example. Another band that could do with more recognition in our country of long-shoed indie types, only bothered about being “fookin’ rock’n'roll man”. Grow up, spawn a set of bollocks and do something original.
