This weeks horror movie is 1408 (2007).

1408, starring John Cusack and Samuel L Jackson, is based on a short story by Stephen King. Considering the cast, I was expecting this to be a really good movie. But I should know by now that expectations just ruin it – I know I’ve said it before, but I really was expecting so much more on this one and was bitterly disappointed. I found it predictable and boring. The only memorable line is when Samuel L Jackson says, “It’s an evil fucking room.”

Γιατί αν it is ξανασκέψου το, το σκέφτηκες; Δεν αλλάζεις γνώμη; Τότε για δες το 1408, την ταινία του Stephen King… Αααα τώρα το σκέφτεσαι καλύτερα… τι;;; Αποφασίζεις ότι το 13 σου φαίνεται πιο τυχερό τελικά; Όπως κατάλαβες θα γράψω πάλι για τον King γιατί είναι απλά θεός και γιατί το 1408 είναι η πρώτη ταινία βασισμένη σε βιβλίο του που πρέπει να τον κάνει περήφανο. Και περιέργως όχι τόσο λόγω σεναρίου…

Σεναριακά αναφέρεται σε έναν συγγραφέα που ασχολείται με τη horror λογοτεχνία και για να κατεβάσει ιδέες πάει σε μέρη που θεωρούνται στοιχιωμένα, λόγω της ενασχόλησής του με το θέμα έχει γίνει κυνικός και ατρόμητος, όμως το Dolphin Hotel και πιο συγκεκριμένα το δωμάτιο 1408 κρύβει εκπλήξεις. Ότι θεωρούσε φαντασία ο συγγραφέας μας γίνεται πραγματικότητα, και ο King βρίσκει για άλλη μία φορά τον πιο σαδιστικό τρόπο για να βασανίσει τον χαρακτήρα του.

Επομένως σεναριακά δεν υπάρχει επανάσταση. Η σκηνοθεσία όμως σε αφήνει σύξηλο, είναι πάρα πολύ καλή και για ταινία του είδους απλά τέλεια, ακόμα και φωτογραφία με άποψη έχει σε μια ταινία που είναι γυρισμένη σε ένα δωμάτιο. Οι ερμηνείες είναι και αυτές πολύ καλές με τον Samuel Jackson να είναι πάντα ο style-άτος εαυτός του και τον John Cusack να είναι πολύ πειστικός. Και δικαίως κέρδισε δύο βραβεία και έθεσε άλλες τέσσερις υποψηφιότητες.

Το βιβλίο πάνω στο οποίο βασίζεται η ταινία είναι το “Όλα είναι δυνατά” που δεν το έχω διαβάσει ακόμα, επομένως το 1408 με παρότρυνε να κάνω δύο πράγματα, να διαβάσω το εν λόγω βιβλίο και να δω και άλλα έργα του Mikael Hafstrom (ο σκηνοθέτης του 1408).

Υ.Γ.: Αν προσθέσεις τα ψηφία του 1408 θα παρατηρήσεις ότι 1+4+0+8=13 spooky…

Nawet na tym polu nie trzeba się za bardzo natrudzić – czasami wystarczy kupować książki.

Pierwszą z polskich zakładek można było zdobyć zakładkę w książce “Rok Wilkołaka” (tej niestety nie mam).

Kolejną była zakładka wznowienia zbioru opowiadań “Wszystko jest względne ” przy okazji premiery filmu “1408” i książki “Blaze“. Z tego względu zakładka jest dwustronna.

Najnowszą zakładką może być ta dostępna w książce “Largo Winch”, a promująca między innymi “Stephen King Pod Lupą“.

Najbardziej obszernym zestawem jest 25 zakładek wykonanych na zamówienie firmy “Wallace & Scott“. Zakładki te ozdobione są okładkami pierwszych amerykański wydań książek Kinga.

Przy okazji premiery każdej z serii komiksowej też trafiają się zakładki. Przykładem jest zakładka “The Long Road Home” wydana przy premierze drugiej serii z cyklu “The Dark Tower“.

W kolekcji znajduje się też zakładka do książki wydrukowana przy okazji premiery DVD miniserialu “Czerwona Róża“.

1408 (2007)

1408’s theatrical cut is just below mediocre but the director’s cut is one of the most effective horror films in the last five to ten years. It is amazing that such little changes can have such a dramatic effect on one viewer’s perception. It’s a shame that the Weinstein’s decided to flub 1408 and give it a sappy and cliché Hollywood ending rather than the dark and gutsy horror ending that Mikael Håfström decided to create. This is the version that you folks in Europe and South American got to see in the theaters. The director’s cut certainly seems to be the real cut, as 1408 seems to move along at its own pace within that version. It is simply a film about a man who checks into a hotel and we enjoy the suspense build up as the film’s main protagonist soldiers forth. Håfström clearly knows what he’s doing and he is influenced by a bevy of horror’s most keenly detailed films, and that is why it is such a shame that his punches are pulled by Dimension Films for the US audience. His razors are dulled, his poison is given an antidote, and his biggest attack of all is completely de-clawed. Shame on the Weinsteins and shame on the US audience that always has a hankering for these sappy moments of comforting resolve. Other than that I have no strong feelings on the matter.

John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson

The Weinsteins did do one good thing and that is to suggest the casting of the Dolphin Hotel’s manager, Mr. Gerald Olin. He probably should’ve been played by some little old white guy with a fancy accent, but instead we get the absolutely iconic Samuel L. Jackson. Jackson is surely one of my favorite actors and it is simply because I enjoy watching him in anything he is in, and 1408 is no exception. Jackson is like Jack Nicholson, he can play anything but it seems that creeping perpetually underneath every character he plays is a little bit of Sam winking at the audience as if to say “it’s me again”. Olin is the formulaic old man who warns the kids not to go into that house or stay at that camp, and no one listens. The problem is Jackson, as an icon, is traditionally such a great intimadator, but here he is the intimidated and yet he carries the same confidence in 1408 that he carries anywhere else. He warns ghost skeptic and author Mike Enslin, played by the equally enjoyable John Cusack (if you don’t believe me I recommend seeing Grace is Gone) that his quest to find physical or visual validation of the supernatural will end in room 1408 of the Dolphin Hotel, but it will very likely mean the end of Enslin’s life as well. 1408 is an extremely evil room. It would have to be if not even Jackson will go inside.

The screenplay is great and it is based on a Stephen King short story I’m only familiar with by name. The music in this film is outstanding and works the suspense triggers with the pace perfectly. Enslin is a loner, who the audience will either like or dislike, but his character is very strong and Cusack plays him as if the audience could take him or leave him as a viable hero. The scenes with Cusack and Jackson together are very enjoyable to watch as the two are such dramatically different actors and their characters are so fundamentally strong and so fundamentally in opposition of each other within the context of this story. These scenes work to further heighten your curiosity. What the hell is going on inside room 1408 anyway!? Don’t you worry, the Weinsteins will protect you.

My rating is 2 stars out of 5 for the theatrical version and 3 1/2 stars out of 5 for the director’s cut.

The cynical and skeptical writer Mike Enslin writes books evaluating supernatural phenomena in hotels, graveyards and other haunted places, usually debunking the mystery. While writing his last book, he travels from Los Angeles to New York to spend one night in the evil room 1408 of the Dolphin Hotel, which is permanently unavailable for guests. The reluctant manager Mr. Gerald Olin objects to his request and offers an upgrade, expensive booze and finally the reports relating the death of more than fifty guests along decades in the cursed room. However, Mike threatens Mr. Oiln, promising to sue the hotel, and finally checks in the room. Along the night, he finds that guests of room 1408 can check out when they like, but they can never leave the room alive.

I know who'll be left behind... Me!

The widely anticipated ‘2012‘ will soon hit cinemas globally very very soon.. Did I mention it was soon? Namely November. However, why is it so anticipated? This question could be answered in a multitude of ways, just as the end of the world is depicted in the film… A multitude of ways. The film is ultimately anticipated due to the glamorisation the media has put on the ‘2012 – End of the world because the mayan calander says so‘ frame of mind… Shockingly enough, people are buying it. On the other hand, the movie trailer is impressively nonchalant considering it’s  a disaster movie, and I like that. It’s admirable.

What could be making you lovely readers at home concerned, is the fact the director of ‘2012′ is one and the same, Roland Emmerich. Emmerich’s previous works include ‘Independence day and The Day After Tomorrow‘. Which were amazing and slightly less amazing respectively. Now I know many a person who will say ‘The Day After Tomorrow‘ was a very poor film, however… I disagree. It was a great film, with alarmingly great special effects for its time. 2012 promises to be the same in terms of CGI, but because of the real-life ruckus that’s being stirred by the end of the world mentality, the film may either be a godsend or a new way of life. I don’t know about you, but personally… I just can’t wait for the film itself.

Now a film cannot be bad if it has John Cusack (1408; Igor), Woody Harrelson (No Country For Old Men, Seven Pounds and upcoming Zombieland), Thandie Newton (The Pursuit of Happyness; Run, Fat Boy, Run; Mission impossible II) and Danny Glover (Top Gun; Lethal Weapon franchise, and far too many amazing films to list) in the cast, can it? Oh I forgot to mention the lovely Amanda Peet. (Something’s Gotta Give; Syriana; X-files: I Want To Believe) All in all the lineup is pretty impressive; impressive cast; impressive director; impressive special effects; let’s see if it can impress me. Now finally, the trailer you should all see, is in my next post.

I KNOW that this is bad for my health, and that this is the exact same reason why I quited on the horror-thriller films,

Film “1408″ jest adaptacją opowiadania mistrza suspensu ? Stephena Kinga. Znany pisarz, Mike Enslin (John Cusack) wierzy jedynie w to, co zobaczy na własne oczy. Napisał masę bestsellerów, w których podważa obecność zjawisk paranormalnych w większości niesławnych, nawiedzanych domów rozrzuconych po całym świecie, w których rzekomo grasują duchy. Nie udało mu się nigdzie znaleźć dowodu na życie …po życiu. Jego niewzruszone przekonanie będzie jednak musiało ulec zmianie, gdy bohater ze względu na swój ostatni projekt “Dziesięć nocy w pokojach hotelowych nawiedzanych przez duchy” wynajmie apartament w cieszącym się zła sławą Dolphin Hotel. Lekceważąc ostrzeżenia dyrektora hotelu (Samuel L. Jackson), pisarz zamieszka w nawiedzanym pokoju, który stoi pusty od lat. Inna opowieść byłaby zapewne po prostu straszna, ale tutaj ? jak we wszystkich książkach Kinga ? bohater musi najpierw przeżyć duchową przemianę i ze skrajnego sceptycyzmu przejść na pozycje gorącej wiary. A przede wszystkim …przetrwać noc.

Go on... Try to figure out my movie.

Not a ton to talk about today, since I want to avoid posting just for the sake of posting… that being said, I have some thoughts.

The movie 1408 with John Cusack made me mad. Normal protocol here at PTABB is a link to the movie’s IMDB page, or maybe even the trailer on YouTube. Not this time. What a heinous film.

In the spring of ‘08 George Stroumboulopoulos invited me down to a taping of The Hour. I had mentioned to George when he was taping a guest spot on Rent A Goalie that my Grandfather was a big fan of his. So Strombo hooked us up. Good dude. In the chair that day was none other than John Cusack, who was doing the rounds for his flick, War Inc. — In spite of the films genre (it’s a dark comedy), the subject matter (war) meant that the audience got serious Cusack; philanthropist Cusack; I’m not going to crack a smile for 11 solid minutes Cusack. Whatever. That’s your priority, Johnny. But, I’d just like to say…

That song and dance rings a little hollow when you star in a flaming piece of dog shit like 1408.

This cannot be overstated: The movie has no point. It is pointless. It is – as a matter of fact – bereft of point. You were there to cash a cheque, which is fine, just spare me the mumbling meandering, feigned annoyance when Strombo asks you a question about anything other than the US Occupation of Iraq. Seriously. (You’re lucky that I didn’t hold a boom-box over my head with a pre-recorded list of creative obscenities.)

When 1408 ended I turned to my wife and said: “Well, I guess Hollywood just ran out of ideas for horror movies with a beginning middle and end”. She nodded, I continued. “I honestly don’t know what happened… and he burns to death at the end without finding any sort of meaningful resolution that I could see.” (I am now officially talking to myself.) “I think they created 8 to 12 instances where they tried to frighten the audience only they forgot to develop any other aspect of the movie.” (Wife goes to bed.) “Are we sure that he’s dead? And why is he haunting Samuel L. Jackson? And what the fuck is Samuel L. Jackson doing here? Does he have a gambling problem in real life? Did the producers kidnap his children? I’m so very, very confused and upset.”

Less than a day later, I’ve figured out the lesson: I work in a silly business, where silly movies get made. John Cusack’s a nice enough guy, I’m sure. There’s an outside chance that he thinks his sweat has the same consistency as holy water, but that isn’t his fault. When you achieve any amount of celebrity the world becomes a surreal place where your words appear wiser, your sense of self-worth becomes distorted and it becomes impossible to actually pay for anything. (I’m astounded that this last factoid hasn’t spawned a reality show called Celebrity Perks.)

Today on Celebrity Perks, Taylor Lautner attempts to purchase a pair of sneakers in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

My poooiiint is… In an industry where weird things happen (like 1408 making $130,000,000 worldwide) there is no linear path to the top. There’s only hard work.

So, thank you, John Cusack. You taught me a valuable lesson, which I, in turn, shared with the world. I’ll never get those 106 minutes of my life back… But still, thank you.

-True demon story and exorcism. Started the exorcism saga.

-Most memorable scary movie scene.

-Stephen King 5 page story. Nobody actually dies, but is still scary. Willingly staying inside the haunted hotel room, Mike experiences all types of mind torture.

7.Night Of The Living Dead (1968)

-It’s black and white and set a trend for zombie movies.

8.Martin (1977)

-Vampire movie often forgot about but one of the first scary vampire movies.

9.The Omen

-Creepy little boy that everyone knows.

10.The Ring

-Cursed videotape. You watch, you die kind of thing.

11.Frailty

-Crazy movie where the ax is named Otis and destroys demons.

12.Hostel 2

-Creepy movie with regular people in a foreign country getting tortured and killed. Quentin Tarantino did a good job.

13.The Haunting In Connecticut

-True story. Visions and supernatural happenings.

14.Shutter

-Camera that takes spirit photos (signs) of dead people in regular pictures.

15.Scream

-Started the whole spoof movie thing , but was actually a decent movie.

So, guys if you ever want to scare a girl into your arms, one of these 15 films would be a good strategy.
