This is something that I wrote sometime ago, at the time these were some of my feelings, some of them I still believe others I’ve changed since then, but I just thought I would share them with you.

We live in a time where, as a people we have lost ourselves. The youth have no interests in what the elders have to say, most have lost their native tongues and everyday integrate into their lives more and more of the outside world. But let’s not exclude those that are older, many of whom like myself have also lost their native tongue and their culture. Right now we see our own people taking their lives. Why?? So many of our people are lost in the world of addiction and many are dying from it. Why?? I fear that in fifteen years many of my friends and people I know will not be here because they will be taken by addiction or suicide. Even today, many of my peers have gone onto the next world. People so young and full of life, people that I thought would be around long enough to at least see their own children grow up. I’ve run out of fingers, our people keep dying and I can no longer keep track. Day after day, year after year, the cycle continues every day I wake up and I wonder if someone died but most times, I am just glad that I woke up at all. Yet no one does anything to stop it. Oh we have our cultural guru’s that seem to think that culture is the answer if we all live the way we did in the past then maybe we’d stop destroying ourselves. I respect these people maybe their right. But to much has happened and the world is moving so fast that integrating the past in to our everyday life is time consuming and sometimes seems like a waste. I say this because that is how I feel. I also don’t think that our culture alone can save us but it is one step closer to understanding who we are.

But you know and I know that I’m just another Indian born and raised on the rez. Indians, Redskins, wagon burners, squaw, apple, drunk. By any definition we are the first people that Columbus saw when he landed in 1492 the day the world changed. From then on we have been persecuted, killed, massacred, and yet we live on. We live on. That statement alone means a lot and yet so many of us have forgotten that we are the “best of the best, the fittest of the fit”. The fact that we even stand here to day is a great testament to our ancestors. Everyday we take our existence for granted, believing that if we are here today that we will be here tomorrow. We have to re-establish pride in ourselves but we have been tainted, too many years of oppression, victims of genocide. After 500 years we are only now starting to realize we mean something that we can actually bring something to the table of life. But for so many people out there it is too late. Time and the world have taken the soul of so many. So many are lost either to the world outside or they are far beyond the reality of their own minds.

Then I look to my reserve and I see social injustice and conflict and I feel powerless to do anything about it. Too many people living and liking the status quo all the while the fear of repercussion rules us all. We are bound by unwritten rules. Rules used to protect those at the top the Chiefs, the Councilors, the Grand Chiefs and their Assemblies. We like to believe that these people are working for us but deep down inside we know that their only in it for themselves. I know many people will say that this is not true and I admit there is a small minority who are really there for the interests of the entire nation. But they are few, those that wish to drink the blood of the people are too many and we keep letting them stay there. These people that are in power are suppose to be there to help us but more often then not, they forget because instead of walking beside us they walk on us. An example of the hierarchy of the western world imposed on us with the imposition of the residential school. But if you ask me the residential school has become the scapegoat we all recognize its impact on our lives and that it is the root of all evils. In reality is has become our crutch, we lean on it because its real and it happened. We forget we too are to blame for where we are today. Scared to take a stand against the government, scared to lose it all, treaties after all are just words on pieces of paper. Yet their entire meaning defines us letting us know that any misstep and we’re written off, so easy just the stroke of a pen.

If you have power in Indian country then you are above every one even though before you were in a sense a nobody. Just an everyday Indian Joe. That’s the problem, the hierarchy of the western world was not meant for us the First Nations. Imposed on us since 1492, we have been the victims of its power. Not everyone is going to like what I say but I’d rather have enemies to question what I say then have a lot of friends with closed eyes. However, the world that we exist in is full of harsh realities that make life seem extraordinarily hard. But, is it really? On the other hand, are we just fooling our selves to think that it is? Especially on this reserve, we rely to heavily on Chief and Council to make a difference for us. Repeatedly we are let down because we have to be the ones to change our situation, not Chief and Council. Otherwise, we will forever be where we are today. Change is the hardest thing for anyone to do, especially if life has been the same way for many decades/centuries. When will we wake up?
Because if we don’t wake up we will lose this battle that we are in. We are slowly eroding our treaties under the guise of improving opportunities. Too many times I see that in the end it’s only the “whiteman” that benefits. Kainai is a great example of letting the non-native make our decisions and develop economic opportunities for our community. One only has to look at the forage plant, Kainai Industries, to see that other people’s ideas are not going to get us ahead. We casually and carelessly allow these people to come in. Then when we take over the operations, we realize that they have been set up so that once that non-native person leaves the business essentially fails. But now the time has come for us to take the lead. For too long we have followed, we’re better than that, it’s time to take a stand. To be the true leaders we were meant to be. If we don’t then we have failed ourselves and those future generations who are going to come after us.

Looking for African influences in the Caribbean? Look no further than Haiti, where most of the population is of African descent. When the first Europeans came to settle in the land of the Arawak and Taino Indians, they brought oranges, limes, mangoes, rice, and sugar cane with them, but that’s not all they brought. They also brought African slaves and left them to work the sugar cane plantations.

“How did this come about?” you may ask. Well if you recall there was a man named Christopher Columbus who had a little something to do with the history of the Americas. Remember how Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, well guess where else he landed? Quite the busy little beaver, the explorer discovered the already inhabited land and claimed it for Spain. Spain called it Santo Domingo, but Columbus named it La Isla Espanola (The Spanish Island later to be called Hispaniola).  By the year 1520, the native Indians were almost completely wiped out from the hard slave labor the Spanish imposed  upon them and the revolts of the people leading to executions by the Spaniards. Sadly the Taino’s have no tangible legacy in the form of an existing people in Haiti; therefore, Africans were shipped over to the island to work on the sugar cane plantations.

The Africans introduced okra, ackee (red and yellow fruit), pigeon peas, taro (edible root with a nutty flavor). By the year 1700, the French had taken control of Hispaniola and with the African slave labor still in place, they expanded their commerce to include coffee, cotton, and cocoa. Haiti went on to win their own independence in 1804 becoming the first African-American led republic in the New World.

Haiti, originally  named by Taino Indians for its high ground, shares  Hispaniola with their spanish-speaking neighbor, the Dominican Republic. Occupying just the western third part of the island, Haiti still remains highly influenced by the French in its language, culture, and food. French cheeses, breads, and desserts have been integrated into the Haitian lifestyle. Haiti’s cuisine is often considered French or Creole; however the Spanish, African, and French influence make for a smorgasbord of flavor and a truly historical and  multi-cultural experience.

Method of cooking: Often slow coked and wrapped in banana or plantains and leaves for several hours. An African method of cooking is still employed today, using coals and placing them in a hollowed-out area of the ground. The food is then placed atop the coals with the leaves covering it for ultimate slow cooking results.

La historia y la verdad parecen ir por caminos diferentes… Se enseña que los latinos descienden de maleantes, también que la Reina Isabel donó sus joyas de para financiar el primer viaje de Colón. Nada de esto es cierto, pero le sorprenderá saber cuánta verdades aún siguen ocultas sobre el verdadero origen de Colón y de la población latinoamericana.

En aras de descubrir lo que la historia no enseña respecto a Colón y su Descubrimiento, lo que es decisivo para entender el curso real de los acontecimientos actuales, he compilado algunos de los hechos probados que revelarán bajo un nuevo lente nuestra actual sociedad.

Consideremos la vida de Colón y la situación de Europa a fines del siglo XV.

En la correspondencia que Cristobal Colón dirige a su hijo Diego, incluye dos letras hebreas que significan “Con la Ayuda de Dios”. Una costumbre judía. Llaman la atención también las letras hebreas que significan “alabado sea el Señor”: Baruj Haslem en sus cartas.

Cristobal Colón conocía bien las escrituras. Un hecho insólito pues en ese tiempo la gente no tenía acceso a la Biblia, en cambio todos los judíos conocen bien la Torah y los Profetas.

Dentro de los libros que Colón llevaba hay títulos como: “La Guerra de los Judíos” de Flavio Josefo, manuscritos del ex-rabino Samuel Ibn Abbas y del erudito Abraham Ibn Esras. En algunos de esos libros hace anotaciones al margen como la equivalencia judía del año 1481: 5241.

Colón cambió su apellido en repetidas ocasiones. Cuando llegó a Portugal utilizó Colombo, luego en Castilla Colom y por último Colón. En España Colom fue un apellido tradicional radicado en Cataluña, Valencia, Baleares y Aragón desde el siglo XIII. Colom es apellido sefaradí.

Cristobal Colón nació en Génova, tal como testifica en su declaración de 1498 al instituir su mayorazgo, donde escribe: “siendo yo nacido en Génova…”, o en los registros de la ciudad italiana donde aparecen su nacimiento y el matrimonio de su hermana Bianchetta, sin embargo la familia Colón no tiene una tradición Genovesa de varias generaciones lo que da fuerza a la tesis de que los Colón se habrían asentado allí unos años antes del nacimiento del almirante. Se trata de judíos sefardíes que emigraron a raíz de la persecución inquisidora contra los judíos de España iniciada en 1348.

El apoyo que los judíos conversos de España le dieron a Colón fue decisivo para emprender la travesía de Indias. Dentro de los entusiastas de su proyecto figuran Isaac Abrabanel y Abraham Senior, judíos ricos e influyentes que intercedieron ante los soberanos españoles para que apoyaran la empresa de Colón sin resultados.

Luis de la Cerda, Duque de Medinaceli fue hospedador de Colón por casi dos años, fue tal su entusiasmo que convenció a su primo Pedro González de Mendoza, Cardenal de España de recomendar la iniciativa de Colón. Ambos eran de sangre israelita por parte de su abuela.

González de Mendoza apoyó a Colón de forma entusiasta. Era un personaje poderoso, basta recordar que para la época España contaba con el primer Ejército estructurado y profesional desde las legiones romanas y era la potencia regional hegemónica, súmesele a eso que el Rey Fernando el Católico tenía el derecho del Patronato de Granada y Canarias concedido por el papa Inocencio VIII y la bula papal de 1478 que creó la Inquisición en Castilla, lo que le confirió todo el poder decisorio en asuntos religiosos en la península Ibérica. Al Cardenal se lo conocía como el “Tercer Rey de España”.

Juan Cabrero, camarero del Rey también recomendó en varias ocasiones al Rey la empresa colombina. El abuelo de Cabrero, Sancho de Paternoy, murió en la prisión de la Inquisición.

Luis de Santangel es otro ilustre judío ligado a la historia de Colón. Apoyó incondicionalmente junto a Juan Cabrero y a Fray Diego de Deza le expedición e hizo un préstamo por 17K ducados de oro a la corona española para financiar el primer viaje. También préstamos por sumas exorbitantes para apoyar el segundo y tercer viaje de Colón. Estos fondos provenían de los bienes expropiados a los judíos expulsados de la península. Es falso el dicho de que la Reina Isabel donó sus joyas para financiar el proyecto de Colón. Todo lo contrario, a los reyes católicos no les interesaba invertir los fondos de la corona en una empresa incierta. Fueron los judíos los que hicieron posible el descubrimiento de América.

Si la historia fuera justa, nombres como Luis de Santangel, Gabriel Sánchez (su padre fue quemado en la hoguera por judaizante), Juan Cabrero, Fray Diego de Deza serían reconocidos como los verdaderos promotores del descubrimiento de América.

La motivación de los judíos era religiosa, como todo lo que mueve al pueblo judío, pero también había intereses económicos. Por todos es sabido que uno de los argumentos que impulsaron la travesía de Colón fue la problemática de las vías comerciales a las Indias.

Pero esta no fue la principal razón. Los judíos creían de que las 10 tribus perdidas de Israel se encontraban en “Asfareth”, palabra hebrea que significa “La otra tierra”. Colón no era ajeno a esta creencia.

El hecho de que el plazo para la salida de los judíos de España hubiera vencido días antes de que Colón zarpara es un enigma de la historia y un hecho de crucial importancia para la historia de América.

El 31 de marzo de 1492 los Reyes Católicos firmaron el Edicto de Expulsión de los judíos de tierra española. El 31 de julio, dia en que vencía el plazo dado por la corte las naves ya estaban tripuladas. El 3 de agosto zarpó Colón.

Una tercera parte de la tripulación declarada era de judíos conversos.

La creencia de que a Colón lo acompañaban hordas de convictos es falsa. Colón era, como la evidencia lo indica, de origen judío y los perseguidos judíos sefardíes eran los más interesados en apoyar la travesía de Colón. Fray Antonio de Aspa tripuló ese primer viaje y en sus crónicas comenta que iba más tripulación que la declarada y que a estos los llamaban “ginoveses”, nombre dado a los judíos en España.

La historia enseña que Colón era genovés pero no menciona su origen judío, también que quienes vinieron acompañando a Colón eran convictos, ladrones y renegados…

The story of Christopher Columbus is an inspiring story of faith and courage. Quite frankly, he is a great guy. His discovery of the Americas insured that the New World would be a Christian New World and the center of the greatest freedoms known to mankind.

If you went to school when I went to school (I am 52), this statement is a gimme. But in classrooms today, Christopher Columbus is a bad guy and actually one of the greatest bad guys of history. Why? The liberal retelling of history in the name of multiculturalism.

MYTH: Columbus set out to prove the earth was round.

FACT: At the end of the 15th Century, most everyone knew the
earth was a sphere. What was in question, however, was the size
of the earth–its circumference. Columbus underestimated the
size of the earth by one-fourth.

MYTH: Queen Isabella sold the crown jewels to pay for Columbus’
voyage.

FACT: The queen may have suggested this at some point, but her
financial advisers assured her that there were other ways to
finance the enterprise. One way was to make the city of Palos
pay back a debt to the crown by providing two of the ships.
Another way was to get Italian financial backing for part of the
expenses. The crown had to put up very little money from the
treasury.

MYTH: The crew of the three ships on the voyage of discovery was
made up mainly of criminals and nare-do-goods.

FACT: The crew was primarily comprised of seasoned sailors from
the towns of Palos and Moguer, Spain, thanks to the efforts of
the Pinzon brothers. Just in case Columbus might have had
trouble attracting a crew, the crown did offer amnesty to
criminals. However, only four criminals were on board: one a
convicted murderer (he killed a man in a quarrel); the other
three, accused of freeing him from prison.

MYTH: The initial voyage from Spain to the new world was
perilous–fraught with bad weather and lack of food. Several
sailors died on the way.

FACT: No one died on the maiden voyage. There was enough food
aboard for one year. The weather was almost ideal–no storms
were encountered. However, on the return trip to Spain there was
a major hurricane which almost destroyed the two remaining ships.

MYTH: There was a priest on board the Santa Maria in 1492.

FACT: There were no friars or priests on the first voyage in
1492, despite Columbus’ deep religious fervor. Many of the
paintings of the first landfall in the new world on San Salvador
show a priest with Columbus–contrary to the facts. There were
five priests on the second voyage: Benedictine Father Buil; the
Jeronymite Father Ramon Pane; and three Franciscans.

MYTH: Several hundred sailors were aboard the three caravels on
the initial voyage in 1492. The ships were relatively large for
the anticipated long journey on an unpredictable sea.

FACT: Only 90 men made the first voyage of discovery. The ships
were quite tiny by modern standards–no longer than a tennis
court, and less than 30 feet wide. The Santa Maria had 40 men
aboard, the Pinta, 26, and the Ni$a, 24. Only the Ni$a and the
Pinta returned to Spain, as the Santa Maria was shipwrecked on
Christmas Day, 1492. 39 men volunteered to stay behind at the
fortress called “La Navidad” on the northern coast of present-day
Haiti (they all perished at the hands of the Indians prior to the
return of Columbus the following year).

MYTH: There is no doubt that Columbus was of Italian descent.

FACT: Much controversy surrounds the origins of Columbus. Some
say he was a “converso”–a converted Jew. Others say he was born
on Corsica, and there is even a theory that traces him to Viking
ancestors. The prevailing theory is that he was a Genoese, born
and raised in that seaport city in what is now Italy.

MYTH: Columbus suffered from syphilis and probably died from it.

FACT: Columbus suffered in later life from a form of gout–an
arthritic condition in his joints caused by the rigors of the
sea. His eyesight was also declining. While syphilis was
introduced into Europe after 1492, probably by the Indians
Columbus brought back to Spain or by the sailors who had contact
with them in the new world, Columbus was not infected by it.

MYTH: Columbus died a pauper, in chains, in a Spanish prison.

FACT: Despite the fact that the Spanish crown retracted some of
the privileges promised to Columbus, he was a relatively rich man
at the time of his death. Although he returned to Spain in
chains in 1500 after his third voyage, the King and Queen
apologized for the misunderstanding and had them removed.
Columbus died quietly at the age of 55 in Valladolid, Spain, on
May 20, 1506 in his own apartment attended by family and friends.

MYTH: Columbus is buried in Santo Domingo, the Dominican
Republic.

FACT: There is much controversy surrounding the whereabouts of
the remains of Columbus. There are records of the transferral of
his remains on different occasions, so that it is possible that
parts of his remains are in several locations. The prevailing
belief, however, is that his primary burial place is in the
Cathedral of Seville, Spain, with some of his bones or ashes in
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and some in Genoa, Italy. At
one time they were in Cuba.

MYTH: Columbus set foot on North American soil at some point now
a part of mainland United States.

FACT: Columbus never saw North America. His first landfall was
in the Bahamas, probably the current San Salvador (Watlings
Island), although even this is disputed (Samana Cay, an island 65
miles south of San Salvador is a strong contender). There are
proponents for seven other possible island landing sites. The
only current U.S. territories either sighted or visited by
Columbus are the U.S. Virgin Islands, which Columbus named on his
second voyage, and Puerto Rico. While in anchor of St. Croix
(USVI) on November 14, 1493, some of Columbus’ crew experienced
the first hostile encounter with the Indians. Five days later he
landed at San Juan Bautista, now Puerto Rico. Later he would
visit the northeastern tip of South America and the eastern coast
of Central America, but never mainland U.S.A. The fact is that
Columbus never admitted that he had discovered a new continent.

Being British I am only vaguely aware of the fact that America marks Columbus Day on the second Monday in October. It seems that some Americans wonder why they celebrate it at all, when they have other anniversaries which relate more to their own history as a country in their own right – Independence Day being the most obvious one. But celebrate it most still do, maintaining a five hundred year link between the Old world and the New.

In the modern era, with global telecommunications satellites orbiting the planet and the internet appearing to shrink the world until it all fits neatly into a laptop the size of Lindsay Lohans handbag, it is difficult to imagine a time when a continent as vast as the Americas could have been undiscovered by European civilisation. Indeed, Europeans were so unaware that the Americas were there that Columbus himself only stumbled into them by accident. As I have read one commentator say about Christopher Columbus today, he didn’t know where he was going, he didn’t know where he was when he got there, and he did it all on borrowed money. Perhaps today ought to be renamed, Lucky Bastard Day?

Hello there, would you mind awfully if we steal all of this land from you and kill most of your people while we're at it?

Not so lucky for the indigenous people of the Americas, of course. Called Indians because Columbus took quite a while to work out that he had not landed somewhere in Asia, their way of life was to be utterly decimated after the arrival of the Europeans in 1492. However intelligent and humane Europeans perceived themselves to be to one another during the Renaissance, in the Americas they acted as if the Dark Ages were still upon us, wiping out and/or enslaving great swathes of the native peoples. Now that we are faced with possible environmental disaster on a global scale I cannot be the only one who mourns the loss of one of the last races of people who truly understood how to live in harmony with one’s environment.

But let me not quibble on Christopher’s big day. The boy certainly done good, for someone with no idea of the true circumference of the world. To undertake such a perilous mission as his when seafaring was still fraught with dangers and the most likely outcome was that he and his crew would never be seen again, took the sort of insane courage that we rarely see today. So happy You day, Columbus. Have a drink or several to celebrate. After all, no-one is really going to want you to be the designated driver, are they?

Columbus Day is celebrated in the United States, Día de la Raza (Day of the Race) in many Latin American countries, Día de las Culturas (Day of the Cultures) in Costa Rica, Discovery Day in The Bahamas, Día de la Hispanidad and Fiesta Nacional in Spain, Día de las Américas (Day of the Americas) in Uruguay and as Día de la Resistencia Indígena (Day of Indigenous Resistance) in Venezuela.

Señores, compatriotas y compañeros de batalla. Ya dije algo hace poco acerca de mi idea de la Hispanidad. Mucha gente se espantó, y otra cosa no me esperaba de los buenistas. Sin embargo, a pesar de que valoro el día de la conquista y el descubrimiento de América, por las implicaciones que tuvo para nuestra prosperidad económica, siento decir que el día 12 de octubre no me van a ver en el desfile de la “hispanidad” porque este concepto, “hispanidad”, es uno que no comparto por lo que se ha convertido hoy en día, por culpa de, en parte, el filo-falangista General Francisco Franco. No obstante, celebraré la conquista a mi manera: prometí a mis detractores que celebraré ese día tomándome unas pintas de cerveza, al más puro estílo germánico. Hoy les hablaré de varios conceptos, en ningún orden particular.

Nuestro patrimonio está en peligro, nuestro patrimonio común. Los valores básicos de una sociedad libre, una sociedad decente, se ven amenazados.

La hispanidad, tal y como se celebrará el 12 de octubre, se ha convertido en una enfermedad, y en un festival cutre, latino y mediocre. Ya dije en agosto cual era la España que yo celebro y cuales son los conceptos que rechazo. Me tomaré las pintas, celebraré la conquista y el proyecto civilizador para Occidente, pero no me verá nadie en el desfile, pues mi sentimiento internacional no está con Sudamérica – está con toda persona y país que ame y defienda la libertad, sean de habla hispana o no. Espero que el 12 de octubre al menos sirva para despertar algo de conciencia nacional entre algunos españoles. El hecho de que una mayoría haya elegido a Zapatero como presidente es señal de que, por mucho que nos digan lo contrario, el sentido/sentimiento nacional casi ha muerto. El 12 de octubre debe utilizarse para reafirmar España y nuestro futuro, un futuro que, si Dios quiere, eliminará a Zapatero y el PSOE del poder, con una fuerte recuperación de la derecha democrática y liberal, la reactivación de nuestra economía, la legalidad reestablecida, y que España vuelva al protagonismo de las Azores, una foto que me enorgullece como español, y deje de estar al margen, compartiendo sobremesa con dictadores repugnantes y barriobajeros como Evo Morales y Hugo Chávez. Es normal que un gobierno del PSOE comparta tiempo con esos personajes: los socialistas, en España, y en todo el mundo, siempre han representado los sectores más bajos y fracasados de las sociedades.

Asalamu Alaikum.

The discourse from racists, Islamophobes, and the generally misinformed is that Europe, England, and the US became international super-powers by virtue of being “white” people’s.

The logic then becomes that all non-European people’s of the world are inherently inferior because we were unable to develop the heavy industry that gives the US and Europe military and economic dominance over the rest of the world.

As usual, for a concept of this scale there is not enough space in this blog to answer this entirely. But some basics can be kept in mind.

1. Before the America’s were discovered, European civilization was considered the backwater of the world. Between the fall of Rome (in the 400’s CE) and 1492, Europe was in the “Middle Ages” or “Dark Ages” during which society not only stagnated, but became retrograde. For 1000 years, European civilization had been brought to its knees.

This is an important observation, not only in reference to this blog post, but also to Marx’s concept what must eventually happen to all civilizations: Revolution or Mutual Destruction. But more on that another time…

2. The Islamic Empire that would spread and exist from the 600’s CE right up to the end of World War I (the Ottoman Empire) would actually go on to find and save texts written in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. One of the most interesting historical twists is that the Islamic civilization actually saved Western civilization’s poetry, art, architecture, philosophy, etc. by translating it into Arabic and storing it in their libraries.

But now, on to why Europeans were able to industrialize, while the rest of the world was not.

Before the discovery of the Americas, the civilizations of Europe, Africa, The Middle East, Central Asia, the Subcontinent of Southeast Asia, and East Asia had pretty settled boundaries. These boundaries would shift, and some civilizations would rise and fall, but generally speaking the “Old World” had been carved up and settled. Civilizations basically fought back and forth over the same chunks of land, never able to acquire a unique excess over anyone else.

Reminder, this is a blog post, so this is a simplified explanation.

The “Old World” primarily relied on a few different political economic models: feudalism, slave aristocracies, hunter-gatherer societies, peasant economies, etc.
Each economic model had its corresponding social relations. Some were proto-communist, some collections of peasants, some were divided by slaves and slave owners, some were divided by some form of “nobility” and their subjects.

Some of these were more or less democratic than others.
(Please note that capitalism did not exist yet).

The discovery of the America’s and its impact on human history can not be overstated. The fresh and abundant resources that the America’s provided was like winning the lottery for the European economies.

The one thing standing between previously unprecedented wealth and a return to the Old World struggle over the usual territory were the Indigenous People’s of the Americas.

The solution to this problem was something that had never existed before: race.

The social construction of race became necessary for the first time in human history. The purpose of constructing race was to then create racism.

Europeans had never met people like those of the Americas. There was no  historic connection, unlike with other People’s of the “Old World.” It was easier to create race and racism against them, than it was to do so against other People’s of the world. This racism would be used to commit mass genocide and steal both human resources and natural resources from every part of the Americas.

AN ENTIRE HEMISPHERE’S WEALTH WOULD GO TO EUROPE. This wealth was what would end up catapulting Europe economically and militarily ahead of the world. The new wealth would couple with the new precedent of racism to then spread European imperialism to other parts of the world, particularly in the pillaging of Africa.

This scale of wealth, power, and blood would be used to create early capitalism. Early capitalism would give way to the Industrial Revolution. The industrial revolution was funded by the genocide and theft of the America’s and the world, through the vehicle of racism. This would create modern capitalism and the birth of the Working class.

For the first time, instead of just fighting over old territories in the Old World, fresh territories could be exploited. And, unlike before, the birth of race and racism would allow for genocide, so that maximum amount of wealth could be stolen.

That is a brief history lesson on the rise of Western imperialism.
It was not that Europeans were in any way better, smarter, or more ingenius. All human beings are created equal.

It was that the resources necessary to make the leap from the old sources of wealth and modes of production were not possible until the discovery of the “New World” and the brutal exploitation of all of its resources.

In doing some of my homeschool prep (they don’t cover all holidays in our curriculum so I have to do some outside prep), I stumbled on a great website that covers several myths about Columbus.

I felt all proud of myself that I knew some of them, but then my ego-bubble was quickly deflated when I realized that I didn’t know all of them. The really sad part is that I had a pretty good education & still was very mistaken! So now I will conduct a mini-campaign to rid the world of Columbus-myths! Help my cause by checking it out here!
