Wow I am 20! That really happened fast, honestly after age 15 my life kinda flew past me. Which got me thinking what a crazy conversation it would be if 20-year-old me were to speak to 15-year-old me. Young me would not believe all of the changes, like…

1. You have figured out what you want to do the rest of your life! And you don’t go to college to do it, so don’t let everyone pester you about how “You’ll never have a good career without college”.

2. You write…and actually enjoy it! Ya you have a blog and everything!

This may be one of the most shocking facts!

3. You jog, and get depressed if you don’t!

Ok so I may not look this fabulous whilst running, but I’m getting closer! But I was wrong before, THIS is the most shocking fact! haha.

4. Ya you know Mr. Perfect you are convinced you’re in love with right now? Turns out mom is right, he is a complete troll. But you learn about life, love, and yourself. So it all works out for you…Can’t say the same for him however.

5. Boyfriend? Fiance? Hahahaha no! You are married to work, and you’re cool with that. Turns out the overbearing brothers are now ok with you dating…mostly because you’re not.

6. You’re really happy! You still don’t have life figured out, but you are working it out. Goals are being accomplished, lifelong friends are being acquired, and lessons are being learned. Sure it’s tough at times but you have more confidence than you ever thought possible, and you have the best people around you!

So you have a lot to look forward to! Enjoy life and know there is much more to come.

I hope you guys all enjoyed this post. What are somethings that would shock younger you? I would love some feedback. Happy Monday!

I am currently feeling like ultra crap and have just had a little cry, i needed a place to vent and

I am currently feeling like ultra crap and have just had a little cry, i needed a place to vent and seek advise so here i am once again consulting the internet. So if you wish to hear the ramblings of a 15 year old girl as she seeks help to help solve a confusing part of her life which will mostly be insignificant in the long run but right now it is very significant.

To begin i will ask a question for which i would like you to think about as you read my tale : A friendship is based on the fact that you do not bitch about your friend behind their back because you are too close and love each other too much for that, but what if you do not bitch or complain to anyone else but merely complain to yourself but don’t vent these to others does this make you a bad friend or does it make a bad friendship?

Now the reason i had a mini breakdown, i have a friend who i am really close with and would label as a best friend we were really close and everything but recently she has made a lot of internet friends, i know these people as i have met them. She constantly wants to visit them and speak to them and she goes to visit them in london, i have come a couple of times because her mum says she isn’t allowed to go unless i go, so i go, because i want her to be happy. Recently all she does is talk to me about them non-stop and about virtually nothing else; as i am the only one of her “Real Life” friends who also know these “Internet” Friends. However i have noticed everytime i am talking to her or i am around her or we are out togther she is constantly on her phone texting one of these “Internet” friends i find this extremely rude as she is just ignoring me yet we are out doing something together; i’m sure many of you will also find this rude. So here lays the beginning of my annoyance.

I am now complaining about her in my head. She then comes to me in January asking me if i want to go to see Micheal McIntyre with her and these internet friends, i ask her “Can i have a few day to think before i give a definate answer” she says “Of course” …. Next thing i know a couple of minutes later the tickets are booked, I’m like alright i guess i am going now because all of my friend’s “Internet” friends think i am going. I know the only reason i am invited is because my friend can’t go unless i go; which leads me to begin to panic about being left out and being a third wheel. I get told we would stay the night at one of these “Internet” Friend’s house, i don’t feel comfortable with this because i barely even know these girls but i know if i say: “I can’t/ don’t want to go” my own friend will hate me because she then can’t go and all her “Internet” Friends will hate me because she now can’t go.

Since then things have gotten worse, i am constantly complaining in my head, she is on her phone even more and is always putting these “Internet” Friends before her “Real -Life” Friends. Don’t get me wrong these friends of her’s are really nice people, it’s just i feel really neglected as a friend as well as being used, which is something i shouldn’t be feeling. I don’t want to go to this Micheal McIntyre thing (which is in october, which means 7 months of this progressively getting worse); i know though that if i drop out so many people will hate me for it, but i really don’t feel comfortable with going, and i can already feel my friendship with my friend slipping through my fingers.

So once again i return to the question i addressed earlier, is this really a friendship and am i a good friend. But the main thing is CAN I DROP OUT? I want to so badly but i don’t want everyone to hate me. Please Help me, anyone? I need help so badly i don’t know what to do and i can’t constantly feel like this, i feel horrible and used and i hurt, will our friendship last if i back out or should i just carry on and go in october but feel as terrible as this? Please any advice is welcome.

Whisky, as readers will doubtless know by now, varies enormously. Some whiskies can be fruity, others woody; some bold, others delicate; some nice, others not so nice. In short, each distillery creates whiskies with its own distinctive character. But that’s not to say that the same distillery churns out the same one bottle year in year out. There’s an awful lot of variation within just one distillery alone, so it’d be wrong to think that just because you’ve tried one expression of a distillery’s whisky you’ve tried them all.

Let’s take an example from the home of the world’s best-selling single malt, Glenfiddich. As Josh explained in an earlier article, it got ahead of the game when it anticipated the leap from blended whiskies to single malts in the 1960s. Since then, Glenfiddich has always managed to keep its nose in front of the other distilleries (if you’ll forgive the weak pun). Their site advertises five different single malts aged 12, 15, 18, 21 and 30 years old. Alongside that, there will be lots of other expressions available, but the aforementioned whiskies are their stalwarts. So far, we’ve reviewed three of them.

If you were to do the same, you’d find something quite interesting. Essentially, you’d experience the whisky evolving. The 12-year-old greets you enthusiastically with a very strong pear and oak sensation and the whisky feels quite young; it needs some more time in the cask. The 15, however, offers something different because this time Glenfiddich has put it in four different casks and given it an extra three years’ sleep. So the wild and exuberant pear is calmed down and other notes emerge. Similarly, the taste has developed, and it feels more rounded as a result. Finally, the 18-year-old is akin to a sophisticated old grandfather: he doesn’t need to go crazy, because he carries with him an age and an aurora that ought to be respected. It’s here that everything marries together in a perfect arrangement. Contrasting yet harmonious sensations arrive at different times and create a long, undisturbed moment of pure, unabashed whisky heaven.

If you get the chance, you should try it out for yourself. You might have a different interpretation to us – which is great – but you’ll understand a distillery better if you’ve tried their other expressions. You’ll certainly experience the whisky evolving in shape and character, although don’t assume you’ll enjoy the older expressions more – that’d make the game too easy (some will be made worse by too long in the cask)! On a final note I should add that different batches of the same year can taste quite differently too: a 12-year-old Glenfiddich bottled in 2012 will taste different to one bottled in 1990. That, however, is a different story, and one that we’ll be reaching in due course. For now, use this article as an excuse to buy as much whisky as you can lay your hands on. Sláinte mhath!

Glenfiddich’s website (which – fear not – I checked out only after I’d compiled my own tasting notes) commented that its 15-year-old had been ‘innovatively matured in three types of oak cask: sherry, bourbon and new oak, before being married in our unique, handcrafted Oregon Solera vat.’

The obvious hope from the folks at Glenfiddich is that this hard work delivers a greater complexity than the 12 year old: after all, it’s spent time in four different casks (which, as we know, is jolly important) and has been sleeping for three years longer than its younger sibling.

A friend of mine described the whisky as having a sweet aroma reminiscent of old books, a general smoothness and a nutty aftertaste. I don’t think he’s far off the mark. The 15’s nose is both quieter and more complex than the 12-year-old’s. You certainly don’t get the bombardment of pear that the 12 rather exuberantly greets you with. It’s been calmed; the aroma instead is like smelling apple and pear boiled sweets, and because of this much more of the 15′s complexity can be revealed. So, we also get sweet, juicy raisins married with a gentle honey, we get a soft wood fragrance, and we get an enveloping sweetness that wafts its way throughout the whisky.
The Glenfiddich might appear to the nose as sweet, but it’s only in the tasting that the influence of the four casks becomes apparent. The pear, raisin and honey induced sweetness completely disappears the moment the whisky touches the tongue. It’s perfectly smooth, but it’s spicy; spicy enough that you sit up and take notice. Ginger prevails here, and almonds play a supporting role. It’s another teaser of a whisky: you expect it to get sweeter, but it stubbornly holds out, giving a rich variety of flavours in the process.

There’s no question that the bourbon casks have played a significant role in this whisky’s journey, and the finish begins with a slightly bitter marzipan taste, but one that’s surprisingly pleasant. Finally, traces of the sweetness seen in the nose return as the curtain falls. How best to sum this whisky up? It’s one with an intriguing mix of spice and sweet, though I can’t help but feel it’s missing a certain je ne sais quoi. The 18 year old awaits…

‘The Gentle Spirit’ says the label upon the bottle. I’m both intrigued and worried, for the (admittedly magnificent) 12-year-old Glenkinchie I reviewed two weeks ago promised a delicate touch that was almost too subtle and refined for its own good. Now, in sprawling Victorian handwriting, the Dalwhinnie 15-year-old is promising the same. This has to be a supreme balancing act on their part if they are to avoid disappointment.

The distillery is located deep in the Highlands, and is one of the coldest villages in the United Kingdom (summer temperatures rarely reach double figures, I’m assured). Nonetheless, the hardy villagers of Dalwhinnie need only this single malt by the fireplace and they’d soon be as warm as anywhere else. Even now, as I type, my chest has been soothed and comforted by nothing more than a small dram of this glorious liquid.

And as my glass is emptied, the Dalwhinnie’s claim as ‘The Gentle Spirit’ now looks almost modest. It is a triumph; its nose, sweet, honeyed with a vanilla and smokey effect, becomes softer with every sniff (surely down to the Oloroso wood the whisky is stored in). The tongue is greeted by warm and smooth honey, with a hint of smoke and spice (which compliment the sweetness of the whisky perfectly). Heather and apple are just detectable, but no flavour overpowers the palate. The finish is long and delicate, with traces of almond, honey and heather.

I reviewed a 14-year-old Oban recently, and scored that very highly. ‘That’, I thought, ‘will surely be the best whisky I have for weeks.’ The Dalwhinnie has presented a stern challenge. It is a whisky that should grace any cabinet.

Nose 19, Taste 22, Finish 19, Balance 20

Overall 80

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ)– A brutal fight outside Broadneck High School leaves an 18-year-old in serious condition. Police say his attacker is only 15 years old.

Meghan McCorkell explains what happened during the frightening fight.

Rescue workers tell us that teen suffered serious injuries to his face and eye. Now, neighbors say they hope this fight is a wake-up call for police.

Minutes after Broadneck High School’s dismissal, the two teens traded punches surrounded by a crowd.

“About 75 kids filming on their cell phones, on their cameras to post on YouTube and Facebook later,” said neighbor Jeanne Garrett.

[worldnow id=6683758 width=385 height=288 type=video]

The 18-year-old was hit in the head, fell to the ground, and started having a seizure. But witnesses claim the 15-year-old kept hitting him.

By the time paramedics got to the scene, the 18-year-old was seriously injured and had to be airlifted to Shock Trauma.

“He was lifted with life-threatening injuries so that’s a Priority One patient,” Battalion Chief Steve Thompson of the Anne Arundel County Fire Department said. “You don’t want to waste any time with a Priority One patient.”

The victim is a former student at Broadneck.

WJZ has learned that school officials at Broadneck High School are cooperating with police even though this didn’t happen on school property.

The fight happened right behind the school at the corner of Chestnut Tree and Southview Drive. Neighbors say the corner is a constant trouble spot.

“The kids smoke weed. The kids fight. The kid argue. The kids drink. Everything goes on across from school property,” Garrett said.

“It’s like, dozens of kids but they think they’re the local tough kids,” neighbor Ed Tribull.

Now they hope this tragedy will result in more police presence that could prevent anyone else from getting hurt.

“You feel unsafe sending your kids to school that have to go through this situation,” Garrett said.

WJZ has learned that the victim in this case underwent surgery and is expected to survive.

No weapons were used in the fight. Police have not yet filed charges against the 15 year old.

As I mentioned in a previous post, my wife, Marla Rose, has written a new novel that we plan to release as an eBook next week. This morning, we launched the book’s first video promotion on YouTube, with plans for several others to follow.

The video uses a combination of animation, voiceovers and music to recreate the mood of Marla’s buoyant yet gripping prose. At first, we didn’t want to show any hints of the characters, since we want readers to form the images in their own minds, but we finally decided that it would best serve our purposes to show some teasing, half-hidden or extreme close-up images of the teenaged protagonist.

We’re also redesigning the website to reflect the new look of the video. We’ll have that up shortly, at least several days before the release of the book.

We’ll keep everyone posted.

This is one of my favorite activities, even though it consumes my Mondays and Tuesdays every week.

This is one of my favorite activities, even though it consumes my Mondays and Tuesdays every week. That is also why there are usually no posts on here Mondays and Tuesdays… but a few occurences are worth mentioning today… as I step away from the Civil War for ten minutes.

1. My 15-year-old son has been growing out his hair for a long time. Yesterday he asked me a question I NEVER thought I’d hear… “Mom, do you know how to cut my hair in a mullet?” What in the world? It’s been 25 years since I’ve done a mullet, but I believe I remember how. And then it happened… I was transported back to college in 1985… mullets everywhere. The mullet went down a little rustier than planned (in fact I need to do some repair work tonight) but it made us all laugh until we cried.

2. My 15-year-old son got some running TOE shoes. What in the world? They are red with black rubber on the bottom…. with a little strap just like Mary Jane’s to hold them on his hairy feet. He’s been wearing them around the house all day “breaking them in”… for what, I’m not sure. Maybe running. But he’s a cyclist.

3. Ringo the wiener dog is brain-dead when it comes to house/potty training. Seriously… brain DEAD. This will take a LOT of diligent work. He also tried to chew the back of the Ethan Allen rocking chair. Not good. We initiated the use of the spray bottle today. All I have to add is he’s lucky he’s so cute.

4. Buying SparkNotes from Barnes & Noble online is cheaper and quicker than running down to the store to buy them. Don’t tell my American History students, please. A few clicks…. 44 printed pages… and BAM… I’m smarter than a 5th grader.

That is all for now. Peace out!

My oldest and I went to Target not that long ago. It was an interesting experience for both of us, but mainly her.

First stop MOM BRAS! Yes, mom needed a bra or two… My 15 year old didn’t handle this well at all.

At first I was escorted away from this area of the store while being told by my 15 year old child that, “You have enough bras at home. You don’t need any more.” She REALLY honestly said this to me. While shopping for other things I offered to take off my bra and show her how ratty and tattered it was. She didn’t like that idea very much and finally allowed me to pick one out (maybe two) if she could wait two rows over in socks. And I had to agree hide them under everything so no one would see them. Oh yes, and we were not allowed to talk about ‘them’ the rest of the shopping trip.

Next we were off to pick out a few shirts for my husband.

My daughter wanted to die for a brief moment when she witnessed an orange grizzly-man with his pants half on (or half off — depending on if you’re an optimist or not) trying on shirts in the middle of the t-shirt row. She told me after the ordeal was over that she expected that in Wal*Mart but not Target. LOL!!!

A few other things happened. We took a few pictures down the toy isles of gift ideas for her sisters. We even grabbed a few stocking stuffers, like lip gloss, and nail polish (although 95-97% of the stocking stuffers my hubby bought this year… alone – that’s a whole other blog post.)

After it was all done and we were in line getting ready to check out I was poked in the shoulder… Ouch!

The guy stepped back a little and apologized… plus…

I was polite and I did try to use my hand with my rings a little more when I was checking out. But he just kept flirting. It was so obvious that the casher gave me a few funny glances. You know the type? The ‘girl-friend eye talk’ kind of glances — the ones that are screaming, “He is SOOOOOO hitting on you!!!” LOL! Anyway my daughter wanted to curl up and die. At least that’s what she said on the way out to the car. She also made a note that “Mr. Mom-Flirter” saw my new bras. And on the topic of bras — she was not pleased with my new bras either. She told me I could keep the white one but the black lace one HAD to go back.

I hope anyone out there shopping with their teen/s had a little better luck than we did. But hey, it gave me something to blog about.
