I hate it when this happens. I don’t want to come across as a miserable bastard when I’m doing these reviews (well, more miserable than usual) but this is just such a gigantic let down.

Return of the Living Dead was the film that took Romero outside and then beat him with one of his own shoes. It was a superb, hilarious, irreverent, gross horror comedy that took all the best bits of zombie films and added a few of its own. It was smart without being smug, nasty when necessary and one of the most genuinely enjoyable schlocky horror films of its’ time.

This, however, is not. It does, to be fair, give me a great chance to expand on one of Jarv’s golden rules of schlock horror, but in comparison to its incredible elder sibling and the inventive, shocking and superb second sequel it’s a massive, massive failure.

I can hear the thinking behind this. It sounds exactly like “KA-CHING”. The original was a highly successful little film, so a sequel was always going to be inevitable. To make matters worse, it deliberately sets out to compare itself to the original, and is lacking in every single conceivable way. It’s like Audley Harrison comparing himself to Mohammed Ali- just stupid and outclassed.

It is also as lazy as you can get. Dialogue, location, plot, and actors are all rehashed in a shameless and frankly bone-idle attempt to recreate the magic. To make matters worse, one of the returning cast members even drops a wink to the audience by saying “I’m sure we’ve seen this before”. You don’t say. I don’t ask for a lot from these movies, but please put some fucking effort in.

Not to mention the fact that the town was nuked in the original, and they even gave a route for a sequel that would have made sense. This isn’t so much Part 2 as “Part 1, but gelded”. The original is 18 rated in the UK. This is 15. As soon as you see a drop in rating then you know that it isn’t going to be anywhere near as good as the original.

Plotwise: 3 kids find a barrel of trioxin. Gas gets out, chaos and hilarity fail to ensue, before undead horde are defeated using the brilliant plan of a truck load of beef brains and enough electricity to power Kim Cattrel’s vibrator for 45 seconds. It’s moronic dogshit of the lowest order, stupid without being fun, and any momentary enjoyment is buried under the weight of it’s own self-regard.

The acting is not worthy of mention, and the direction is insipid and uninspired. The writing, on the other hand, is worth a mention- because it’s crap. Imagine the bastard lovechild of Kevin Williamson and Diabolo Cody scrawling on a wall in crayon and I bet they would come up with “zingers” like you get in this film. I can’t physically be arsed to go through them all, and the thought of doing so makes me depressed, but really, crap like “You’ve got a big mouth and no brains” really makes me want to kick the writer. All the characters are poorly thought out stereotypes, the set pieces have as much tension as the skin on a bowl of custard, and it manages to be dull, predictable and frustrating.

So, given all the above, is there any reason on earth to watch this lame rehash? Well, I’ve given it one solitary Chang, and that’s for the zombies themselves, who are hilarious. The brilliant exchange where the zombie tries to persuade the survivors to return to the hospital is very funny, and they are as a rule much more professional than the previous effort. They aren’t a patch on the glorious and hideous monster Julie in the second sequel, but at least the Tarman makes a welcome cameo. If you must inflict this tripe on yourself, they do briefly enliven things (before it slides right back into the crapper with the young couple whinging about something or other).

And this brings me on to Jarv’s 2^nd rule of schlock horror: do not make a child the central character. The reason being, as soon as you do you neuter the film. Only truly vindictive and bad natured films kill children. Schlock is more playful and inept fun- so the presence of a child as the main protagonist automatically means that said child is not going to die (as much as he may deserve it), and if he/she does then it’s a horrible piece of shit that needs avoiding anyhow.  Teenagers are great cannon fodder, but anyone under the age of 16 should not feature in a risk taking capacity at all.

Overall, would I recommend this? No, I most certainly would not. Watch the original for laughs and the third film for genuine horror. This is boring, ill conceived, downright lazy cash in with all the charm of a steaming dog turd on a summer’s day.

Para quien no sepa qué son Los Números Chungos le recomiendo encarecidamente que se ponga a ver Perdidos (a.k.a. Lost). Si te importa un pimiento y quieres arruinar la serie y de paso tu vida pásate por aquí.

Por cierto que la sexta temporada tiene previsto su arranque para el 2 de Febrero de 2010 en Estados Unidos. Habrá que ver si al final se cumple lo del estreno mundial o si habrá que seguir viendo los capítulos subtitulados… Veremos.

Our planet is full of environmental oddities and phenomena we still cannot understand or explain. We barely comprehend common phenomena like lightning and tornadoes so chances are we have a lot more to investigate in the future. Weird shit is happening on our dear uncanny planet, so for you, we have collected the 15 strangest phenomena of nature:

1. Circumhorizontal arcs
This optical phenomenon looking similar to a fiery rainbow has actually nothing to do with rainbows and flames. It is rarely seen and it’s appearance depends on location and latitude. To be formed the sun has to be very high in the sky and a “Cirrus cloud containing relatively large plate-shaped ice crystals must also be present” (Wikipedia Quote). Sunlight entering, hitting those ice crystals and exiting at a 90° angle somehow creates this shiny rainbowy thing in the sky.

2. Sailing stones
Well the name speaks for the product, except they do not sail as much as they move along smooth valley floors in long tracks. How these stones owned the plants at moving and relocating is still not understood. They usually like traveling for 3 to 4 years and they sometimes roll-over and even change direction. Some of them sometimes decide to go back the same way for some peculiar reason.  So what did the scientists think of when it came to explaining this movement of rocks? Strong gusts of wind is what it probably is, though the origins of the Thing sounded more appealing to us.

3. Red tides
Once again a misleading name for HABs in marine coastal areas. The species’ color is often red or brown so they tint the water to a reddish color. Why these so-called HABs happen to occur in such locations is totally unclear, nevertheless the red bloody waves are as beautiful as they are horrifying.

4. Light pillars
One more visual phenomenon caused by reflection of light from ice crystals. It appears when the sun is at or low to the horizon in which case it’s called a solar pillar. The light can come from multiple sources like the Sun, the Moon or even streetlights.

5. Fire whirls
Sometimes called a fire-tornado is a phenomenon where fire takes an upward vertical form resembling a tornado with a fiery filling (yum!). These fires are pretty lethal sometimes reaching heights of more than 1 km and wind speeds over 160 km/h. A good example is the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake in Japan where a firestorm was caused and created one of these fiery tornadoes that killed more than 35.000 in less than 20 minutes. Don’t play with fire whirls, kids.

6. Blue holes
Also called vertical caves or submarine sinkholes (whatever rocks your boat), these holes are circular depressions and their name comes from the contrast difference between the dark color of the water in their depths and the color of the surrounding shallows. They have low water circulation and therefore they aren’t very good at supporting sea life, though they contain a shitload of bacteria. The deepest one in the world is Dean’s Blue Hole with 202 meters depth.

7. Columnar Basalt
Fractions are formed during the cooling of a thick lava flow. When this cooling occurs rapidly, contraction forces are increased. Since lava flow cannot shrink horizontally without fracturing as easily as it can when it shrinks vertically, a network of fractures develops and columns  are formed. The most popular (probably) basalt flow in the world is Giant’s Causeway located on the northern coast of Ireland.

8. The Moon changing color
The reason why this occurs is due to the scattering of light by the atmosphere. When the Moon is on the horizon, moonlight has to pass trough much more atmosphere than when it’s directly overhead. By the time it reaches us the purple, green and blue pieces of visible light have been scattered away by air molecules leaving only the red, orange or yellow for us to see. The Moon can also “change” color when it’s directly overhead if there’s pollution in the atmosphere. What actually pollutes the atmosphere will determine what color you see as it can be red, orange or even blue.

9. Ice circles
This phenomenon occurs in cold climates where the water is moving slowly. Ice circles form at bends in the river where the accelerating water creates a circular current that breaks off a chunk of ice and rotates it in place. As it grinds against the surrounding ice it smooths out into a circle.

10. Sundogs
An atmospheric phenomenon that creates bright spots settled on a luminous halo around the sun. These “dawgs” are formed in very cold weather when sunlight passes trough ice crystals found in high and cold cirrus clouds. The actual explanation is much more confusing so we won’t get into that.

11. Lenticular clouds
These saucer-shaped clouds form in high altitudes “where stable moist air flows over a mountain or a range of mountains” (quoted from Wikipedia). Because of their shape they’ve been mistaken for UFO’s and sometimes even called “visual covers” for UFO’s by paranoid UFO believers.

12. Penitentes
These snow formations take the form of closely spaced blades of ice with the actual blade facing the direction of the Sun. They can be as tall as a person… wait, what now?! Having said that, skiing probably ain’t the most popular sport where these impaling machines are found. They are commonly formed on the Andes by the strong winds there.

13. Mammatus clouds
The name comes from the Latin word mamma which means udder or breast. It’s applied to the pattern of pouches resting beneath a cloud because they appear to resemble boobs. They do resemble many things but I guess it’s what people first think of when they see them. Unlikely to the nature of breasts, these clouds tend to indicate that a strong storm or even a tornado is coming.

14. Sinkholes
Known by many names including shake hole, swallow hole, swallet, doline or cenote, come to think of it, you call them whatever you like. They’re natural depressions caused by removal of bedrock and soil by water. Coming in various shapes and sizes, they acquire depths and diameters ranging from less than one meter to several hundred. Their formation can be slow or sudden, but nevertheless, if your yard starts to descend into a pit to hell, you might wanna consider moving.

15. Ball lightning
This electric atmospheric phenomenon is highly debated and controversial. They’re reported to be seen as luminous spherical objects which last much longer than split-second lightning strikes. The ball lightning has been seen in various sizes ranging from one centimeter to a few meters. Their existence is based solely on public sightings and there’s no physical proof aside from photos reported to be the real deal (kind of a UFO situation).

TunePro.com, une plate-forme de vente en ligne au logo très horrible, a choisi de vendre sa musique à perte afin de se mettre sur la map! Sur le site de TunePro, on peut télécharger l’album complet d’artistes reconnus tels que Sarah McLachlan, pour aussi peu que $ 1,71 (USD). La compagnie a choisi de vendre de la musique à perte afin d’attirer un maximum de consommateurs et de les fidéliser. Voilà la motivation des dirigeants de TunePro  : «Nous pensons que cette stratégie attirera plus l’attention sur TunePro, qu’en déboursant des sommes ridiculement élevées en publicité». TunePro a choisi de dépenser son budget de promotion de cette manière. Après écoulement du budget, dans 2 ou 3 mois, les prix seront de retour à la normale.

La solution de TunePro est bien éphémère! À terme, leur plan fonctionne. Évidemment, puisque vous ne seriez pas là à lire mes lignes. Le bouche à oreille est enclenché. Les médias raffolent de ces stratégies loufoques. Ça fonctionne pour eux, évidemment… mais à très court terme! Parions que cette «idée de génie» en amènera d’autres à faire de même, non? On peut déjà s’imaginer qu’au moment où TunePro remontera ses prix vers la normale, une autre plate-forme de vente en ligne adoptera la même stratégie. Cela forcera inévitablement TunePro à réagir. Telle est la manière que l’on emboîte le pas dans le «Bal de la perte».

Voilà pourquoi la musique finira par être gratuite. Parce qu’il n’y a pas plus bas comme prix que 0,00$. Et si 0,00$ est un prix stratégique et temporaire pour une boutique qui cherche l’attention, personne n’est à l’abri du fait que ce prix devienne la norme. Depuis les CD à 23 $ en magasin, iTune a créé la norme du 99 cents la chanson. Tous peuvent créer une nouvelle norme, en autant que le prix soit toujours plus bas.

La  stratégie de TunePro est intéressante pour quelqu’un qui cherche à vendre autre chose que du mp3. Si TunePro avait autre chose à vendre, nul doute que le fait de dévaluer temporairement (ou en permanence) sa musique pour la transformer en produit d’appel (loss leader) aurait un effet sur les ventes de ses produits dérivés. Mais tel n’est pas le cas. TunePro n’a rien d’autre à vendre.

Ce genre de stratégie fonctionne pour les bands et les artistes qui cherchent l’attention des Internautes. S’il en coûte 80 000 $ en dépense promotionnelle pour atteindre le coeur de 40 000 fans, sachez qu’il n’en coûte pour un artiste que 720 $ en bande passante (coût du transfert d’information sur Internet) afin de permettre à 40 000 personnes de prendre gratuitement son album, via Internet. Seulement 720 $ pour récolter 40 000 courriels et ne plus jamais à avoir à dépenser quoique ce soit pour communiquer directement avec eux et leur vendre autre chose. Apple l’avait bien compris : Apple a des Macs, des iPhones et des iPods à vendre; la création du iTune Music Store était nécessaire pour offrir du contenu ordonnés à mettre dans ses dispendieux baladeurs; le mp3 à 0,99 $ n’était planifié que pour hameçonner les consommateurs de musique afin de leur vendre autre chose. Résultat : tant mieux si le iTune Music Store est profitable. Le fruit de cette boutique de vente en ligne ne représente pour Apple qu’un léger surplus dans ses prévisions globales, sans plus.

Je plains TunePro. Ça m’attriste en fait. Parce que je sais qu’ils ne feront jamais d’argent à vendre leur mp3 à 0,00 $ ou à devoir éventuellement compétitionner contre la toute nouvelle boutique de vente de mp3 créée par de jeunes «wizkids» ambitieux. Parce que pour un revendeur, une commission de 15% sur rien du tout, c’est encore rien du tout.
