Last minute. Spray paint. Arthur. Sun. Moon. Childhood. Jessie Mae. Pirate. Genie Zac. Pumpkins. Cake. Party. Yummy. Happy.

I had not heard of Darkstar until about 4 hours ago. The first two page spread of NME (always the best) is once again to credit for my discovery of this. And what a discovery. Earlier today, I had been under the impression that no one would take the crown from Crystal Castles for the kings of 8-bit electro – or for the foreseeable future anyway. But this has completely changed my opinion.
Darkstar are a London based duo of whom I can mysteriously only find a few songs. And that pains me. Because this is just the most relaxed and gorgeous song I have heard in a long time. It’s like Crystal Castles + ritalin. Which is very good to hear because I was wondering when I would ever hear a relaxed Crystal Castles song. You could maybe argue that ‘Crimewave’ is pretty laidback, which indeed in many ways it is; but it always has an edge to it.
From what I have heard though, this is a pretty big departure from their usual type. If you break it down, all it is is five minutes of exactly the same riff. But that’s ok. That’s good. There will be many people who hate this because of it but it’s a change. And that’s ok. That’s good.

Well I’ve had a hectic week with lots of stuff going on at work and starting my course (plus a hectic tv-watching and sitting around schedule…)

I’m starting to get into my stride with list things and have started making plans for some things and ignoring some of them and hoping they’ll go away! I figured I should get cracking on some of the year-long challenges (rather than fail by default!) so I spent last Sunday wrestling with the Sunday papers and buying a houseplant.

I’m definitely going to have to pick up the pace if I’m going to be finished by this time next year, I’m still only up to two completed things eek!

An awful lot of food

Well, tonight we added a few more items to the list (numbers 156, 157, 158) and got cracking straight away on 156.

Some of the usual suspects (Em, Charlie, Carolyn & Kelvin) and I were having a typically glamorous and exciting evening (i.e. heckling trashy tv and talking rubbish about nothing in particular) when we started trying to decide what to eat. We leafed through various takeaway menus and compared notes on great little places we knew…

[I should point out at this point that normally our catering arrangements are normally much more impressive, home-cooked and less bucket-based than what we ended up with]

… Eventually, based on Em’s craving for corn on the cob and the fact that I’ve never really had ‘proper’ KFC food we somehow decided that I absolutely had to try a ‘bucket’ and that this had to go on my list. We therefore merrily traipsed off to KFC, all thoughts of great hand-made, stonebaked pizza replaced by ethically questionable chicken-based products and gravy.

Much as I’m generally a junk food fan, the KFC menu remains a mystery to me so it was useful to have Kelvin & Charlie to guide us through the array of bucket-based options. In the end we went for ‘The Full Works’; chicken bits, baked beans, more bits of chicken, chips, some more chicken, some questionable coleslaw, chicken, gravy and lots of mini packets of salt. Back in my slightly less harshly lit flat (seriously, who designs KFCs?! They’re terrifying places, all ‘funky’ light fittings, wipe clean surfaces and enormous pictures of smiling people at funny angles on the walls) we laid out the feast, started eating and waited for the meat sweats to kick in!

Actually it wasn’t that bad really and I can now tick something off my list (though it’s a shame it’s not one of the more ‘make a good impact on the world’ items but ho hum. I have now eaten from a KFC bucket

Euphagus carolinus  Quiscale rouilleux  /  Rusty Blackbird  

Present in all Canadian regions during the nesting season, the Rusty Blackbird usually nests throughout the territory of Québec and the Maritimes and goes down to spend the winter in the eastern United States. Fond of forest streams, it settles in peat bogs, marshland forests and beaver ponds, and it is not uncommon to see it along the edges of lakes and rivers. Its diet is quite varied, from fruits to insects, through seeds and small fish that it catches in shallow waters and along riverbanks. Its length is 22 to 25 cm.

Présent dans toutes les régions du Canada en période de nidification, le quiscale rouilleux niche habituellement dans l’ensemble du territoire québécois et des Maritimes et va hiverner dans l’est des États-Unis. Amateur des cours d’eau en forêt, il fréquente les tourbières, les forêts marécageuses et les étangs à castors, et il n’est pas rare de l’observer en bordure de lacs et de rivières. Son régime alimentaire est fort varié, allant des fruits aux insectes, en passant par les graines et les petits poissons qu’il capture en marchant en eau peu profonde et sur les berges. Sa longueur varie entre 22 et 25 cm.

The Chimney Swift is a most surprising bird! Like many other birds, it is found in Québec, in the Maritimes and in the eastern United States, where it settles in dark and sheltered places such as hollow trees, caves, chimneys, barns, and empty buildings. An insect-eater, it is fond of wasps, flies and spiders. Its uniqueness stems, rather, from its ability to feed itself, mate, assemble its nest-building materials, and sleep, all while in full flight! Ungainly on the ground because of its legs that are too short and lack anterior claws, the Chimney Swift must spend more time in flight than any other bird. Its length is 12 to 14 cm.

Le martinet ramoneur est un oiseau des plus étonnants! Comme bien d’autres oiseaux, on le retrouve au Québec, dans les Maritimes et dans l’est des États-Unis, où il fréquente les endroits obscurs et abrités tels que les arbres creux, les grottes, les cheminées, les granges et les bâtiments vides. Insectivore, il apprécie les guêpes, les mouches et les araignées. Sa différence, son originalité, lui vient davantage de sa capacité à se nourrir, à s’accoupler, à assembler les matériaux de son nid et à dormir dans les airs, en plein vol! Maladroit au sol à cause de ses pattes trop courtes et sans doigts antérieurs, le martinet ramoneur doit passer plus de temps en vol que tout autre oiseau. Il a une longueur variant de 12 à 14 cm.

Karen Cunningham Promoted to Vice President of Operations

HRchitect “Beauty Pageants” For Top Vendors in the HR Technology Arena Returns with a Full Schedule for Remainder of 2009

Frisco, Texas – August 19, 2009 – HRchitect, the leader in HR systems strategic consulting and the premier Human Capital Management (HCM) and Talent Management systems consulting firm, announced the return of the wildly popular and groundbreaking webinar series entitled, “Assessing the Talent Management and HR Systems Landscape, an HRchitect Beauty Pageant.”

HRchitect conducted ten successful Beauty Pageants from November 2008 through May of 2009 and took a short hiatus for the summer months. The events will return on August 21, 2009 with Talent Acquisition Systems followed by Talent Management Systems on September 4, 2009. Best of all, these are free to the HR community and any other interested parties.

Each ‘Beauty Pageant’ focuses on a different category of HR technology such as Talent Management Systems, Talent Acquisition Systems, and HR/Payroll Systems and will feature up to six contestants. The contestants are all top vendors in each specific category.

The Talent Acquisition Systems Pageant is up first and will feature Hodes IQ, HRsmart, iCIMS (last year’s winner), SilkRoad, and Taleo. Talent Management Systems follows and at press time the confirmed vendor contestants are Jobpartners, Saba, Salary.com, and SumTotal Systems.

“The world of HR technology continues to puzzle many people,” commented Matt Lafata, Vice-President of Sales & Marketing for HRchitect and the host of the Beauty Pageants, “and what better way to try and help solve that than through a fun and informative beauty pageant? HRchitect developed a format to help guide each vendor with an outline of what should be covered during each portion of the pageant. HRchitect came up with pageant categories and a guideline for vendors to loosely follow but of course leaves it up to each vendor to follow their own format:

Evening gown – To start off each portion, we are asking the vendor to come out in their best ‘outfit’ – corporate overview, history, specific identity, financial viability, marquee clients, leadership team, etc. This will be the grand entrance.

Swimsuit – Here the vendors will show some skin in this portion – usability, configurability, etc.

Talent – This portion will cover functionality, technology/integration, global ability, etc.

Interview – This will be the Q & A section from the audience.

At the end of each Beauty Pageant, the audience votes to determine who walks away with the crown and industry bragging rights.

Pra quê servem os números? Onde eles se encaixam?

Às vezes falar uma palavra pode ter um amplo significado, mas um número possui infinitas possibilidades de uso. Sei lá, pode ser uma data, a página de um livro, uma altura, uma idade, uma concentração… Tantas coisas que se eu fosse listar aqui, não sobraria espaço para terminar o post. Fato, nós não sonhamos ou pensamos em números durante nosso dia-a-dia, mas em palavras, então qual é afinal a importância dos números pros sentidos emocionais? Simples, os seres humanos são número, não palavras.

Não sería possível nomear todas as pessoas que populam nosso planeta, nenhuma lista é capaz de tal proeza, por isso, resumimos de forma curta e representativa a 6,6 bilhões de pessoas. Claro, dá até pra omitir alguns zeros com o número por extenso, mas, mesmo assim, percebe-se o poder e a magnetude de tal quantidade. Imagine o número de formiguinhas se observarmos de um topo de um prédio; sempre andando, fazendo alguma coisa, tramando algum plano, sempre irritantes. Agora veja, se numerarmos cada ser humano de uma forma diferente, perceberíamos que cada um tem o mesmo significado que o outro: uma representação igualitária. Acontece que alguns têm a sorte de encontrar um expoente e outros, o revés de cruzar com um denominador. Por isso, os valores vivem se alterando.

Se refletirmos, todos são o mesmo número por debaixo daquelas roupas caras, jóias luxuriosas, sapatos de couro raro e carros esportivos importados. E, em contraponto, o que justamente nos diferencia dos outros são esses detalhes minimalistas que podem nos dar ou arrancar oportunidades. Esses são os fatores que chamamos de valores, porque uns valem mais do que os outros e isso acaba desequilibrando toda nossa inequação final;  de tal forma, quando uma parcela pende para cima, outra pende para baixo. Quem dera se fosse uma equação, pois assim haveria ao menos alguma igualdade, mas não, funciona de maneira inversa. É óbvio, quando os valores individuas aumentam, são grupos e grupos dos menores que devem diminuir absurdamente. Infelizmente, chega um moemtno que alguns números ficam com valores tão baixos, que se aproximam de zero e parece que seria melhor para eles prórios se chegassem ao valor absoluto do que continuar vivendo nessa aproximação sufocante.

Quem disse que os números não mentem, mentiu. Acredite, os números são os seres mais pérfidos e mentirosos que existem. Por quê? Esse é o único modo deles, paradoxalmente, aumentarem seu valor. É mentindo, matando, adulterando e roubando que esses animaizinhos conseguem se manter lá em cima e quem nega corromper-se, continua na mesma vida decimal de sempre. E, no fim, são muitos os presos, muitos os julgados, mas curiosamente, poucos os culpados, o que é um verdadeiro crime; mão proporcionado por uma ausência de justiça, mas pela variável que é a moral. Dependendo sempre de uma função, o padrão social, envolve vários fatores: o X (a propina), o K (os contatos, se é você me entende) e o Z (os escrúpulos). Lógico, o Z é, irremediavelmente, zero, o K tende a crescer em P.G. conforme a pessoa ganha mais poder e o X só depende de Y, o incógnito suposto juíz.

É constante a luta dos números, armados com seus dividendos e lutando pela igualdade. Pena que os números sonham muito, vivem pensando num quadrado perfeito, que utopia.
