I have had this drive for a while and love it; I bought the 160GB model from Amazon. It’s very light weight because it’s a 2.5″ HDD covered in rubber. The cover is a good quality but it seems to catch the dust a lot, and due to the fact it’s rubber it is hard to clean. One thing I love about the cover is the little ‘Freecom’ tag sticking out of the side. Before I bought the drive, I didn’t realise there’s a ’slit’ in the rubber so that you can remove the drive should be USB port no longer work; however, I have not tested that.  The small USB cord means you will need your laptop / desktop on a table. I would not recommend this drive to people who use their laptops on laps, and desktop computers with high off the ground USB ports; you can, however, purchase Type B Mini USB cords with a longer length.

We’re seeing more and more all-in-ones crop up, but wish they would all look as good as this. The EZ1601-01 from E-Machines packs an Atom 1.6GHz processor, 1GB of RAM and 160GB hard drive,  all for the low low price of US$400. We also wish more desktops would share that price tag.

Haha, I just came back from Sitex and yeah there were quite a number of attractive ladies out there – mostly selling things no one buys, unfortunately - but that’s not the important thing here.

The important thing is that I’ve found my laptop which is the BenQ S42, but the promotion kind of suck. Currently they’re only offering a free upgrade to 4gb ram, 160gb Toshiba External HardDrive and I think a 1 year extended warranty.

The ram and warranty are normal, considering promotions that other brands are offering, but the hard disk is a little meh. ASUS is offering a 250gb Western Digital Portable Drive - a leading brand in HDD technology - including tiny but important things like a bag and a bloody mouse.

Call me a fussy cheapskate but there was nothing attractive about the promotion or the booth itself.

The entire place felt empty with, initially, so many promoters huddled together that I couldn’t even see the laptop. Then after I came back a couple of hours later, there was like just one kid standing there looking all lost and everything. Even the laptop itself looked dead with a simple demonstration on the screen that was poorly designed to attract attention.

Other booths like ASUS or Sony was like “WOAH!” Bright lights everywhere, with promoters (guys and ladies) looking all charming, lovely, friendly and - most importantly - alive and know what they’re actually selling. Then their laptops are set to playback pretty demonstrations that make you stop and look, so that the promoters can pounce on you and start doing their job.

BenQ is lucky they have an awesome laptop or I wouldn’t have even noticed them.

Anyway, I managed to get my hands on a camera and I took a bunch of photos which I’ll post up by Sunday. Right now i haven’t bought my laptop because of the lackluster promotion, so I’m hoping BenQ will wake up and start making me want to buy from them.

This could rival home entertainment for generating digital content

Just saw a pitch for Sentinel2, a surveillance system for homes and small businesses.  From the way its manufacturer SVAT talks about it, you’d swear it would be on the shelves at Best Buy with the flat screens and BluRay gear.  This product and others like it are designed for the mass consumer market.

Most interesting: the Sentinel2 has a Seagate 160GB SV35 hard drive inside.  That’s twice the capacity in my admittedly long-in-the-tooth Tivo system. 

160 gigabytes in a product targeted at the consumer mass market…this has the looks of a storage killer app!  That is, if SVAT et al are successful in getting us to adopt this latest new gadget.

I just found SVAT’s Sentinel1 on Amazon.com…I guess it wouldn’t surprise me to see it at Best Buy after all.
