I love this irony.  The only time my ID was ever checked before going into an R-rated movie was 5 days before I turned 17.  That was to see “Paranormal Activity,” for those of you wondering what movie it was.

I just completed my first Research Paper that is now available on my Research Paper section of my blog.

The paper is titled “Why The Behemoth is Unlikely to be a Dinosaur”

In this paper I use the sexual reproduction system of dinosaur to demonstrate how the behemoth is unlikely to be a dinosaur as many Young Earth Creationist claim.

It is 1:00 am as I am writing this.  I am safe at home in my favorite asian-style pyjamas.  Except for the welcoming sound of my cat’s purr and the scratching of my pen on paper, there is naught for sound in the house.  Beside me sits a half-empty bottle of Riesling that an enthusiastic liquor store employee told me is one of the best wines she has ever had.  I  drinking it straight from the bottle.

As far as movies go, New Moon wasn’t a great movie.  Hell, it wasn’t even a good movie.  New Moon, and its counterparts, are an experience.  As I write this, I am freshly home from seeing it for the second time. 

There is a lot of question out there as to what the appeal of Twilight is that it has millions of grown women and teen girls alike mesmerized and caught up in the frenzy.  The phenomenon began before the hasty casting of Edward or the seemingly odd casting of Taylor Lautner as Jacob.  So what is it about this cheesy, poorly written, cotton candy teen romance that has captured the hearts and imaginations of a good percentage of the XX chromosome population?

Well, my friends, I can’t speak for teenagers, in fact I can’t even speak for other grown women.  All I can do is speak for myself.  Twilight is all about the experience.  At some point each and every one of us were 17.  We were awkward and most of us considered ourselves to be plain and without consequence.  Some of us were young girls who were lost in romance and fiction, interpreting it badly, sometimes to our detriment.  A lot of us were experiencing our first true love, not recognizing our own value outside of a relationship with a man.  We hadn’t even found our own identities yet.  In Bella, we can see ourselves at that age.  We have the benefit of hindsight.  We understand the wonder of such a plain jane finding love.

Let’s face it, Ladies.  Hindsight is 20/20.  Now that we are much older, perhaps with families, careers, and identities of our own, it is easy to scoff at young Bella, chastizing her for teaching our daughters that they are worth nothing outside of their romantic inclinations.  We can express anger over how ridiculous it is to be THAT devastated and broken over the loss of this relationship.  But let’s be honest with ourselves.  Let us look back at 17.  This is a good honest portrait of 17, vampires and werewolves aside.  17 does not have the benefit of our hindsight. 

17 is a hopeless romantic.  17 has no identity of its own.  17 has yet to learn the lessons we have learned.  17 just wants to find that niche into which it fits. 

I had an Edward at 17.  He didn’t sparkle and he didn’t need to drink blood to sustain himself.  I thought he was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.  As I stumbled through my young adult years he was there to be sure I didn’t fall and cut myself on the sharp edges of the cruel world.  He pampered me when I was sick, he read excerpts from The Hobbit to me to help me sleep.  He taught me to stand up for myself, even against him, and find my own identity. 

One day, he told me he was going to marry me some day.  The next day he ended our relationship.  It was that day that I found out just how much of myself was wrapped up in his presence in my life.  This did not end well.

The break up ripped a hole in the fabric of my existence.  A hole I thought would never close.  And for a very long time it didn’t close.  Just like Bella, one day ran into the next and I was just existing.  I worried my family.  I scared my friends.  I was a ghost.  Even now I can remember going to work and putting myself on auto-pilot as the hours ticked by and I could think of nothing but how very much I missed him and how painful the hole in my heart was. 

My Edward never came back. 

Regardless of how you feel about her ability to write, Stephanie Meyer takes you back to 17, back to your Edward, back to the joy and excitement of your first love.  You can feel the butterflies in your stomache.  You can feel the electricity of that delectible first kiss – the dragon we spend the rest of our lives chasing to experience again, only to be disappointed. 

Twilight helps us to be 17 again, if only for just a moment (which is as close as I would ever want to get to 17 again) and helps us to look at our daughters, remembering our first love and first heartache, knowing there is little we can do to shield them from that.  And then we smile, knowing all the wonders that are yet to come. 

As I sat in the theatre both times, I was experiencing this with my sisters – with each and every woman who uttered a little squeel over the shirtless werewolves and the sparkling Edward, slyly looking beside them hoping that no one noticed that they were dirty old women.  All of us were reliving 17. 

And now I am back to my wine.  Back to my husband, my Jacob, my love.  Back to 35.  My Eclipse has come and gone, leaving me in the Breaking Dawn of my lovely family.  I will kiss The Diva on the forehead and dream of what 17 will bring to her.

It’s been 17 years since India and the Indians were snatched of their innocence. The secular image of India was tarnished once and for all. India was no longer secular and no longer tolerant. Yes, I am referring to the demolition of the Babri Masjid (infamously called “The Disputed Land”). This blog is not to point fingers at the perpetrators (it serves no purpose) because the truth is known by one-and-all and to which the governments (both BJP and Congress) have been turning a blind-eye; but to look at the performance of the Liberhan Commission from a common-man’s perpective.

The Liberhan commission was formed to probe the Babri Masjid demolition and come out with facts, list down the role played by the perpetrators, the events in the run up to the demolition and the collusion between the right-wing groups and the State government. Now after 17 years, the report contains all of this. My question is: Is this all that you had done for the past 17 years? These facts were anyways known to the common-man a few months after the demolition. So what’s the big deal about this report?

The people of India needed to know much more than the obvious facts stated in the report. Isn’t this the way the commissions have been working so far! A lot of time and money(8-9 crores) has been spent to prepare a report that states the obvious. Why isn’t there a detailed account of the aftermath of the demolition – the riots, killings and the impact it had on the society? The Liberhan report leaves a lot to be desired. As Rajdeep Sardesai rightly puts it in one of his tweets – “with few notable exceptions, inquiry commissions have become sinecures for retired judges.”

Now what remains to be seen is the response of the central government to the report and the action it takes on those who have been indicted. Will the report hold any water? It is anybody’s guess.

En aquesta classe hem començat a veure el quart mòdul: Disseny d’una radiobalisa.

El professor ha començat preguntant, amb tot el que sabiem, com podriem fer un generador sinusoidal, les propostes han estat varies i no han estat gaire encertades per la seva complexitat, com el circuit amb el 555 i el filtre pas baix o la proposta d’un A.O realimentat. El professor n’ha suggerit d’altres com la repetició  d’un sampler que contingui un periode mitjançant un ordinador amb una tarjeta de so conectada al nostre circuit.

Hem començat veient les característiques d’una radiobalisa comercial i seguidament hem vist el circuit final que haurem de dissenyar del qual a primera vista entenem poca cosa, ens hem fixat que el transistor estava en zona activa i hem començat a veure les idees bàsiques dels oscil·ladors.

L’oscil·lador més simple és un circuit LC, però aquest no és un circuit realitzable, ja que la L conté una petita resistència en sèrie que ràpidament elimina l’oscilació i aquesta queda solament en un petit transitori.

Seguim estudiant una estructura formada per un amplificador i un filtre pas banda i ens fixem en les condicions perquè l’entrada sigui igual a la sortida: amplificació igual a 1 i fase igual a 0 en la freqüència d’interès.  Com que les dos tensions sota aquestes circunstàncies són iguals, connectem l’entrada amb la sortida de manera que tenim una realimentació. D’aquesta manera a la sortida del filtre només s’admet una solució sinusoidal, si les condicions anteriors perquè això passi és compleixen es diu que es compleix la condició de Barkhausen. El circuit ressona a la freqüència del filtre de manera que aquesta és la única solució possible i l’amplificador connecta la sortida amb l’entrada. Si l’amplificació és major que 1, obtenim una oscil·lació creixent fins que satura a la tensió d’alimentació i si l’amplificació és menor, l’oscilació decreix fins que desapareix.

El circuit es comporta com a oscil·lador, però no tenim cap senyal que inicïi la realimentació. Tot i això la realimenació és veu iniciada gràcies al soroll, el professor ens comenta el funcionament d’un xiulet com a analogia. Aconseguint una amplificació una mica major que 1 aconseguim que s’inicïi el circuit i que l’amplitud sigui estable en l’amplitud de l’alimentació de l’amplificador. Aquest comportament és no lineal a la sortida del filtre i la senyal s’aproxima a una ona quadrada, això provocarà que la seyal de sortida del filtre tingui uns harmònics que podrien ser molestos tot i que la sortida del filtre sembla una sinusoide.

Finalement, veiem com hewlett i packard van aconseguir fer un oscilador amb un filtre bastant bó sense bobines. Es tracta de l’oscilador del pont de Wien, el filtre del qual esta realitzat amb dos resistències i dos condensadors, primerament un RC serie  i a continuació un RC en paral·lel connectat a massa. Comparem la funció de transferència amb la conneguda del circuit RLC i degut a les seves similituts podem extreure les seves característiques bàsiques com l’ample de banda i la freqüència de ressonància.

Eric and I been discussing our memories/experiences in the Gulf War. I thought I’d share some of our conversations.

The Marine Corps, with the support of Navy air power, was tasked with going for the jugular. Afte rperforming their own deception by shifting both Marine divisions some 40 to 50 miles northeast from their original staging area, the Marines stepped off into battle. The 1st and 2nd Marine Divisions, each more than 18,000 strong, and the U.S. Army 1st Brigade (“Tiger Brigade”), 2nd Armored Division, plunged into the attack. They were supported by the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and thousands of combat service support staff from the 1st and 2nd Force Service Support Groups, and by Navy air forces.

On their way, the Marines had to cross two belts of minefields, 12-foot high sand berms, barbed-wire defenses, booby traps and fire trenches, all the while under sporadic attack by Iraqi artillery. These “impenetrable barriers” were quickly breached by the Marine teams. As the two Marine divisions advanced, two Saudi and Qatari task forces moved up Kuwait’s east coast in a similar drive. The initial Marine advance was described by Schwarzkopf in his 27 February briefing as follows:

“It was a classic, absolutely classic military breaching of a very, very tough minefield, barbed wire, fire trench-type barrier. They went through the first barrier like it was water. Then they brought both divisions steaming through that breach. Absolutely superb operation — a textbook, and I think it will be studied for many, many years to come as the way to do it.”

Overhead, Cobras, Harriers and Intruders provided close-air support as the Marines pushed forward meetingoccasional resistance. Navy A-6 Intruders laid down heavy barrages. Marine aircraft attacked in waves as engineers continued to shoot line charges and drop bundles of plastic pipes near trenches so the blade tanks could form makeshift bridges. Even though the 1st Division Marines encountered artillery fire and a mechanized counter-attack, their attack proved unstoppable. Most Iraqis fought for only a few minutes before surrendering. Massive artillery and air support from Navy and Marine aircraft sparked a frenzy of surrender that, at times, slowed the progress of advancing Marine units.

The 2nd Marine Division enjoyed equal success. With the Army’s Tiger Brigade on the west flank, the 8th Marine Regiment to the east, and the 6th Marine Regiment in the center, the division kicked off its attack. Within hours they too had breached both defensive belts. Facing enemy mortar and small arms fire, the 2nd Division drove into Kuwait and took more than 5,000 EPWs by the end of the first day.

As Marines continued their attack the sea-based arm of the Navy-Marine Corps team continued to provide support. The battleships continued rapid, responsive gunfire on targets designated by Navy and Marine spotters on the ground and in the air. The amphibious task force in the Persian Gulf continued to demand difficult decisions from the Iraqi generals. Because of the threat of an amphibious landing and the uncertainty of where and when it [word/words missing in text] to ten divisions, totaling 80,000 men, to the defense of the Kuwait coastline. In addition they garrisoned troops and equipment on Bubiyan and Faylaka Islands which command sea approaches to vital areas.

About 7,500 Marines from the 5th MEB were off-loaded from amphibious ships at Saudi Arabian ports at the beginning of the ground attack to serve as the 1st MEF reserve force. Marine AV-8B Harriers, AH-l Cobra helicopters and special operations units from the 4th MEB aided the Arab forces in the east coast drive. On the second day of the ground war, both Marine Divisions faced sporadic resistance as they pushed further into Kuwait. They fought some intense battles along the way, and by the time Kuwait’s International Airport was secured on the fourth day of the ground war, the two Marine divisions had defeated an Iraqi force of 11 divisions.

Al Khafji

In the early evening of 29 January 1991, Iraqi armor and mechanized infantry in
eastern and southern Kuwait attacked US Marine Forces, Central Command
(MARCENT) and Arab Joint Forces Command-East (JFC-East) units at several points
along the Kuwaiti-Saudi Arabian border. The Iraqi offensive lasted a little over four days,
continuing until 2 February. Known collectively as the Battle of Khafji, the series of
engagements between Iraqi forces and the US-led anti-Iraq coalition represented the first
significant ground action of the Gulf War.
At the time it was fought, the Battle of Khafji was viewed as a small and relatively
inconsequential attack on an abandoned Saudi border town. In fact, Khafji was a very
significant engagement, since described in one highly regarded study as the “defining
moment” of Operation Desert Storm. Other than Scud attacks, Khafji was the only major
Iraqi offensive of the war and its outcome demonstrated the impotence of the Iraqi army
in the face of Coalition (primarily American) airpower.1

Jeez, i am so bored. You know…This is kinda great. I feel as though I could say anything on wordpress. No one ever reads my blog. I have only had one view in the last 3 months. It’s pretty sad, but also really amazing, because I could make this blog so personal, and none of my secrets would get out because no one ever reads my blog! Also, no one really cares what a 17yr old highschool student has to say. It just isn’t all that relavent to what is going on in their adult life. Which is cool. I guess.

Hey.

Right now, I seriously have a problame with anyone aged 8-12 and are boys. What is with these little retards walking around thinking that the f’n own the place, with there budget hair-cuts and their t-shirts that all say billabong. They are always swearing, which i’m alright with if it’s ANYONE ELSE. When it’s a baby/toddler/old person, it’s hilarious. When it’s a teen or adult, it’s fair enough. When ITS A LITTLE WHINY PRETEEN, IT ANNOYES ME CRAPLESS. They all look the same, all do the same things, and all they’re all little try hard gangstas, always ‘hangin with der homeboys’. D<.

And then there are the 8-12 year old girls. MY GOD. WHO ARE THESE PARENTS. They are all make-up wearing, beyond underage little… bogans, really. They wear mini-skirts and tank tops, they all have phones, they all have a bf, even though their 9  (?) and are always using their phones. WHO ARE YOU CALLING? YOUR MUM? REALLY?

Anyhoo. My point is, back in my day (less than three years ago….) 10 year olds didn’t have phones and wear makup and act like there heaps gangsta.

Last night around 6:30 my 17 yr. old son called.  Still only 5 min. to talk. I tried to get as much information as I could in that short time.  He said his school was pretty easy, he’ll still be able to get his credits to graduate this year and said everyone was still being very nice to him and helping him out. He also said the food was great.   ( I had even heard from others that when the kids got back they had gained weight.)  It really sounds like his is in a good place. Much better than running the roads and getting into trouble with his friends. They also have “Reflection” for 1 hour a day and will attend the campus Church on Sunday.
