Beer gives a False Appearance of Health. — A stout, healthy-looking brewer’s drayman boasted that he had drunk a gallon of beer every day for the last thirty years, and that he was never in better health than at that moment. The next day he died of apoplexy.

As WBBM Newsradio’s Regine Schlesinger reports, at the time of the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893, Dr. H.H. Holmes was living a secret life in the Englewood neighborhood mansion he built. Its interior contained torture chambers where he murdered his 200 victims.

Holmes confessed to 27 murders but was suspected in some 200. There is even a recent theory that Holmes also was London’s Jack the Ripper.

Now, Chicago-area dentist and history buff Mark Kaschube has designed a haunted house based on what later became known as “the murder castle” for the exhibit “Screams in the Park.”

“I love Chicago history. I’ve done the ghost tours. I’ve done all that kind of stuff. Haunted houses are right up my alley,” Kaschube said.

The exhibit will be on display in the parking garage basement of MB Financial Park, at 9703 Bryn Mawr Ave. in Rosemont.

“Thirty-three rooms – huge – it takes you at least 30 to 40 minutes to get through it,” Kaschube said. “Most haunted houses are short and sweet. This one, you get to spend some time down there.”

Kaschube says he has spent two years trying to make his Holmes haunted house, authentic.

“He had gas chambers, he had secret doors that he could just push bodies down chutes into his basement,” he said.

Holmes’ three-story, block-long castle was located at 63rd and Wallace streets – now the site of a post office. He opened it as a hotel for visitors to the World’s Fair a few miles away in Jackson Park and along the Midway Plaisance.

But in the castle, Holmes tortured and killed employees and hotel guests – most of them women – turning on the gas in some victims’ rooms and leaving others to suffocate in a bank vault.

Down the basement chute, Holmes dissected and stripped the bodies of their flesh, and sold the skeletons off to medical schools.

Holmes’ horrifying story is best known from the best-selling book, The Devil in the White City by author Erik Larson.

Then last month I found a real treasure – a complete volume of issues from 1893 – all 52 magazines in great condition.  And so I sat with my coffee, leafing through.

Wow – what a difference 12 years makes!  The fashions had changed so much – and not for the better!  Was the 1890s the 1980s of the 19th century – if you get what I mean?  Was I seeing the shoulder pads of their day?

In 1881 the dresses were slender and elegant giving a smooth, sculpted silhouette but in 1893, after the fashion for “leg of mutton” sleeves – well, what can I say?

I’ll let you judge for yourselves:

As WBBM Newsradio’s John Cody reports, a crew of 12 sailed the open-hulled replica Viking ship – known simply as “the Viking” – through a North Atlantic gale from Bergen, Norway, to Chicago for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition.

The boat was moored in the Jackson Park Lagoon until 1920, when it was moved to the Lincoln Park Zoo. But when the zoo expanded in 1994, the ship was moved again, and ended up exiled first in a Chicago warehouse, then at Good Templar Park in Geneva.

“It was really in great distress because of being incorrectly ported between 1994 and 2008,” said Lorain Straw.

Straw, who heads Friends of the Viking Ship, will receive title to the craft from the Chicago Park District, and plans to begin fund raising and finding the watercraft a permanent home.

The ship was constructed in 1892 and 1893 at Christen Christensen’s Framnes Shipyard in Sandefjord, Norway. It was a replica of the Gokstad, an ancient Viking ship that had been excavated in 1880, according to Friends of the Viking Ship.

Straw says Chicago first asked for the original Gokstad, which sailed in 850 AD. But Norway declined due to the delicate condition of the ship, which had been hauled from harbor mud.

So the Norwegians built an exact copy with planks hand split from green logs. The ship is about 78 feet long, 7 feet wide, and 6 1/2 feet high.

The Norwegians had Capt.Magnus Anderson sail the Viking to Chicago through one gale, up the Hudson river to the Erie Canal and through the Great Lakes to Chicago.

The ship traveled south to New Orleans at the end of the 1893 World’s Fair, and was returned to the following year to Chicago and presented to the Field Columbian Museum – a predecessor to the Field Museum of Natural History – which occupied the World’s Fair’s Palace of Fine Arts before in the days before it became the Museum of Science and Industry.

The Federation of Norwegian Women’s Societies had the ship restored and moved to the Lincoln Park Zoo in 1920. The Norwegian-American community maintained the ship as it sat in a shed near the zoo’s duck pond for many years, but it eventually began to deteriorate again, Friends of the Viking Ship reported.

When the zoo began its expansion project, the Chicago Park District sold the ship to the American Scandinavian Council. The ship then made its way to the West Chicago and finally to Good Templar Park, while its dragon head and tail were placed in storage back in Chicago at the MSI.

The American Scandinavian Council took on an obligation to maintain and display the ship, and planned at various times to have it moved to its own museum, the Museum Campus, and Navy Pier. But those plans all fell through, and the council ended up folding in 2001, the group said.

In 2007, the Viking was listed as one of the 10 most endangered historic sites by Landmarks Illinois.

Straw says she would like to see the Viking at some high visibility location such as the MSI after the park district turns over title to “Friends of the Viking ship,” which will have the vessel surveyed, and then begin collecting money for it’s complete rehabilitation.

Yet, the powerful hand of our digital world is changing the way we look at history. Once upon a time, historians had to search dusty archives to find a document which proved that yes, some day you were born somewhere. I know you were born someday and somewhere, but reading your name there, on that old sheet of paper . though scanned by some guy I’ll never know – gave me a thrill of knowledge. And I want to share that feeling with the rest of the world.

One Thin Slice

What do you do when your city lot is at a 25 degree angle to the street? You build a building that looks completely normal from the front, but comes to a very slim edge at one corner. It’s very interesting from the outside, but I’d love to see what the rooms look like inside—what could you possibly put in the corner of a room like that?

This building is one of many along Shiloh Street in Mt. Washington, Pittsburgh, that are angled to the street in much the same way. Buildings of an interesting shape and narrow streets on extreme hills (tomorrow) make the neighborhoods a very interesting visit.

Of all the people and characters I’ve come across since I started researching this history of pavement art blog, none have intrigued me more than Alice Geneviève Coleman.  I’ve found out so much about her, and yet, until now, knew barely nothing about her upbringing or home life. There is still much to know about Alice, but this fascinating little article represents the first known ‘interview’ with a Victorian Screever, and certainly the first to throw light on her upbringing with an actual illustration of her home…REMARKABLE!

Rumours of this, the very latest thing in women’s work, having reached my ears, I proceeded on an interviewing expedition, and after considerable trouble and endless inquiry at last had the good fortune to alight upon her at work on the pavement of a northern suburb.

In answer to a few questions, I elicited the following interesting information as to her career:—

“My father and mother were both in the theatrical profession, and early in life I was left to the charge of my grandmother, with whom I lived until I left school at the age of 14, when I obtained a situation as a clerk to a neighbouring butcher, and soon after fell in love with a travelling acrobat; but my grandmother objecting to my marrying anyone connected with the profession followed by my parents, I was sent away to some friends residing a little distance from London. This, however, proved useless, and at the age of 17 I was married and joined my husband in his performances. Ill health, however, preventing him from following the acrobatic business, he was forced to take up the profession of a street artist for a living. I was always very fond of drawing when at school, and took great interest in my husband’s artistic work, so that when he became too ill to go out, and it became necessary for me to do something to keep the wolf from the door, I determined to try my own skill in producing pictures on the pavement. Accordingly having selected a ‘ pitch,’ I commenced to reproduce some of the studies I had seen my husband execute. Several times, however, I had to give up in despair; but at last my efforts were crowned with success, and attracted a considerable amount of attention from passers-by, who liberally responded. Now that the great difficulty of commencement was over, I took kindly to the work, and think I can say, without self-flattery, that I have greatly improved.”

Mrs Coleman laughingly remarked that her first receipt was not in connection with her work, but from an old gentleman who, preoccupied with his paper, stumbled over her, and gallantly accompanied his apology with 6d.

Her receipts vary according to the weather, but she informed me she should think about 5 shillings would be striking a fair average. Of course, in wet weather and in winter her work is at a standstill, and at these times she remains at home painting cards, &c, and preparing her chalks, all of which she manufactures herself, with, the assistance of her husband, whom the weather similarly affects.

Considerable jealousy exists among her male competitors at the invasion of their territory by a woman, but it cannot be denied that Mrs Coleman’s work has a great deal of real artistic merit. Both she and her husband take all possible opportunity of studying Nature, taking especial interest in sunset effects, in which she excels, and of which she produced for my special edification some really meritorious specimens, fully justifying the remark she writes by the side of her pictures:—

“Some people say this is not my own work. If they have any doubt about it, would they kindly ask me to produce a picture before them, instead of running away with the idea that this is ‘one of the many impositions palmed off upon the public’ ? “

Alice G. Coleman wanted to travel the world through her art….I wonder if she ever did so? She is; without doubt, a true star, burning bright in the history of British Pavement Art. A pioneer of the paving stones in a day and age when lady’s just didn’t do such things…paving the way for the Suffragettes and the modern movement…it’s so true that the people who really make changes in history, are most often the one’s doing the smallest of things

Now please be patient and quiet as we consider the background of this statue.

The statue of The Republic was the work of Daniel Chester French. During the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893, it stood in the middle of the beautiful Grand Basin and the Court of Honor, facing the rising sun. She was sixty-five feet tall, towering over the gondolas and ships and people who floated about the basin and strolled the court.

She was astonishing and breathtaking in gold plating.

Of course, after the fair was over, The White City was burned to the ground. I imagine the statue would have collapsed into the water and crumbled to mud in due course. But here’s the good news! The same sculptor remembered how he made the original statue of the Republic, and in 1918 he rebuilt her on a smaller scale (24 feet instead of 65 feet), covered her in gold again and set her up in Jackson Park, very near to where the original might have stood.

And finally Mother Goose and Husband Goose found her!

And took many pictures of her! (maybe more than you’d ever want or need to see…)

Gleaming in the setting sun, The Republic stands.

She stands much taller than this old goose.

Her back to me, she continues looking eastward, ever eastward, into the future.

The Golden Lady is a sight for sore eyes! Daniel Chester French completed this work to commemorate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the fair and also the centennial of statehood for Illinois.

Of course, it’s difficult to imagine that it took us nearly an hour to find The Golden Lady. We are just gooses, after all…
