The Flaming Lips have long been known for being a bit more ‘alternative’ than most other bands. For example, climbing into large bubbles and drifting through their crowd. Or making large statues of pink karate-doing robots. But this is a whole new level of weird. Think a huge load of naked bodies erupting from what can only be described as a vaginal orifice, while other naked people ride towards them on 1940’s bicycles. That kind of weird. This isn’t for the faint-hearted this one. But as I said, the end result is definitely some warped idea of beautiful.

The song fits the video very well oddly. And I say oddly because in my head I cannot think of one song that could fit the lead singer from the Flaming Lips rolling round in a large bubble before being stripped naked and carried into the vaginal orifice. It is a mass of heavy percussion and very reverb-ful vocals. It reminds of something Beck would do actually. Take that anyway you want.

If you have a problem with seeing many completely naked, skinny hippies – don’t watch this video. But if you don’t, do. The experience is worth it on it’s own.

nonostante i tanti proclami e la tante discussioni, la legge 194 è probabilmente una delle leggi più complete e istruttive che siano mai state scritte a favore della salute della donna. la tutela, rispetta i suoi diritti ed i suoi doveri, e si occupa di dare dignità ad una scelta mai facile. leghiamo l’immagine dell’aborto del passato ad una pratica realizzata clandestinamente, in cliniche allestite ad hoc, e con un tasso di sicurezza e pulizia assolutamente poco rispettoso per la donna stessa. ora, da dopo la 194 in poi, possiamo dire che realmente tutto è cambiato. ma che dire allora della pillola ru486?

da pochi giorni, finalmente, l’agenzia italiana del farmaco (aifa) ha autorizzato l’immissione in commercio della pillola ru486 (nota anche col nome del suo principio attivo, il mifeprestone). molti son stati i passaggi, i percorsi, e le battaglie per farla passare in un paese contraddittorio e confessionale come il nostro. ma qual’è il suo protocollo d’uso, quali gli effetti collaterali, quali i rischi? ne parlaremo questo sabato in compagnia di silvio viale, medico presso l’ospedale sant’anna di torino. stay tuned!

L’Osservatorio Internazionale Cardinale Van Thuân sulla Dottrina Sociale della Chiesa è evidentemente abituato a ragionare per decaloghi. Così ha deciso di proporne uno tutto suo sulla famosa pillola abortiva Ru486 che, come sapere, sta creando vari effetti collaterali a quella parte della politica e della chiesa che vedono nella questione dell’aborto il campo su cui combattere la battaglia del “rispetto della vita umana”. Oh, ho notato che dimenticano spesso di specificare “rispetto della vita umana embrionale a scapito della vita umana femminile“: che simpatici sbadati.

Come potete immaginare, il decalogo è molto equilibrato. Iniziamo con il primo comandamento.

I. Il primo comandamento è una bella tautologia, “un aborto è sempre un aborto”. Ok. Evidentemente lor signori si stavano ancora concentrando sulla questione.

II. Il secondo comandamento ricorda che a livello planetario ci sono stati questi famosi 29 morti a causa della Ru486. Lasciando da parte il fatto che erano tutte persone che la usavano in modo difforme dalle prescrizioni (e che 2 erano uomini che la usavano come antidepressivo), su questa base lor signori sarebbero più utili dedicandosi alla battaglia contro farmaci simili all’aspirina, che negli Stati Uniti causano circa 7.000 morti l’anno.

III. Il terzo comandamento è molto arguto e osserva che la Ru486 non è un medicinale finalizzato a curare malattie, ma a interrompere la gravidanza. Ne siamo tutti molto sorpresi.

IV. Con il quarto comandamento si entra nel vivo: la Ru486 banalizza l’aborto perché è una pillola. Vale la pena di citarlo: “Una gravidanza è la presenza di un nuovo essere umano, non è un mal di testa o un raffreddore: non si trattano allo stesso modo!”. Chissà quanto tempo c’avranno messo per esprimere questo profondissimo concetto. In pratica se non mi stendono in una sala operatoria e se non mi infilano in utero canule di suzione io, donna, non sto soffrendo abbastanza per capire cosa sto facendo. Non fa una piega.

V. Il quinto comandamento afferma la la Ru486 è come l’aborto clandestino perché costringe la donna alla solitudine: il tempo che intercorre tra l’assunzione della prima e della seconda pillola sarebbe talmente lungo da rendere impossibile ospedalizzare la donna. Falso: in Italia la delibera del 30 luglio dell’Agenzia italiana del farmaco (Aifa) stabilisce che alla donna si deve “garantire” il ricovero tra la prima assunzione e la seconda.

VI. Il sesto comandamento dice che la Ru486 abbrevia i tempi rispetto all’aborto chirurgico regolato dalla legge 194. Non ditemelo, adesso la 194 vi piace?

VII. Il settimo dice prendere una pastiglia è “deresponsabilizzante”. Fatemi indovinare, l’alternativa “responsabilizzante” è: hai scopato tr**a, e adesso ti tieni il frutto del peccato. Perché una donna che fa una scelta autonoma fa tanta paura?

VIII. L’ottavo dice che l’auspicio (?) è sostituire la Ru486 a tutti i metodi contraccettivi. Semplicemente delirante, non commento.

IX. Il nono invita i medici all’obiezione di coscienza. Cito: “ogni medico deve essere libero di dissociarsi e di rifiutarne la prescrizione”. Io credo che prima o poi bisognerà pensare a dei metodi seri per far sì che l’obiezione di coscienza non snaturi la nostra sanità. La situazione in Lombardia, per esempio, è gravissima: la percentuale di obiettori è circa di 7 su 10 e in certi ospedali raggiunge il 100%. Funziona come un’epidemia: io umanamente capisco che sei l’unico del tuo reparto a non essere obiettore ti viene voglia di diventarlo, perché per tutto il giorno non fai altro. Ma allora la responsabilità è dell’ente ospedaliero, che dovrebbe accertare in fase di assunzione se il candidato è un obiettore, e calibrare i turni in ospedale anche in base a questo. La sanità è pubblica: i servizi a cui i cittadini hanno diritto vanno assicurati. E se ci sono troppi obiettori, si assumono i non obiettori. Se ci fosse un partito laico serio, dovrebbe fare una proposta in questa direzione ma, per quanto ne sono a conoscenza, non è mai stata nemmeno ventilata l’ipotesi.

X. Il decimo comandamento dice che l’aborto è un “atto gravemente ingiusto”. Qui si sono fatti intenerire: stavano per scrivere omicidio.

Il servizio sanitario italiano è tra i migliori al mondo, questo lo abbiamo detto. Tuttavia dalla nostra analisi sono emerse delle incongruenze. In questo senso, l’inchiesta dei Radicali, pubblicata in febbraio 2008, insegna: sul 41,2% dei consultori segnalati dal sito del Comune di Roma, il 27,4% non è contattabile telefonicamente, il 13,7% ha un indirizzo sbagliato; il restante 56,8% dei consultori non offre le informazioni né i servizi richiesti, nel 13,7% dei casi gli indirizzi risultano, infatti, sbagliati e nel 15,7% dei casi il ginecologo non c’è (non è di turno, quindi o ci si rivolge ad altri consultori o si aspetta il giorno in cui c’è il medico). Inoltre, i risultati sono ancor meno edificanti se si considera la poca attenzione rivolta all’utenza straniera e l’assenza di materiale tecnico-informativo a favore di quello puramente normativo-descrittivo. Se a ciò si aggiunge che i consultori pubblici sono chiusi nei weekend e festivi, cioè quando servirebbero maggiormente, il quadro è completo.

I consultori della ASL sono stati istituiti con la legge 405 del 26 luglio 1975 e indirettamente con la legge 194 del 1978 all’articolo 3, dove si prevede che essi forniscano assistenza psicologica e sociale alla maternità, che tutelino la salute della donna, che prevengano o promuovano la gravidanza, che divulghino informazioni ed infine, si noti, solo infine, che intervengano in caso di gravidanza indesiderata. Ciò che la 194 sottolinea all’articolo 3 è proprio la loro funzione consultiva. In ogni consultorio familiare dovrebbe essere, infatti, presente uno sportello informativo che fornisca alle ragazze madri tutti gli strumenti a sostegno della maternità previsti dagli Enti e dalle associazioni. In particolare è obbligatorio esporre l’elenco delle Case di accoglienza presenti nel territorio regionale, pubblicizzare ogni forma di finanziamento e sostegno e le modalità per accedere agli stessi. Così come recita l’articolo 2 comma 4, il consultorio deve contribuire “a far superare le cause che potrebbero indurre la donna all’interruzione della gravidanza”. Questo in teoria. Al contrario, nella pratica, la legge 194, viene applicata solo parzialmente e viene accantonata la parte “riflessiva” contenuta nell’articolo 2 della stessa. La leggerezza con la quale gli operatori dei consultori pubblici applicano la loro fede laica e fanno valere il principio dell’autodeterminazione, non lascia scampo alle donne ed è pericolosa tanto quanto l’obiezione di coscienza. Rendendo istantanea, irreversibile e naturale questa personalissima valutazione di interrompere la gravidanza, questa scelta viene completamente delegata alla donna stessa, che in assenza di un “consultorio consultivo”, è libera di scegliere da sola ma in assenza d’alternative. I consultori pubblici, manifestando un’atteggiamento disinvolto sull’argomento aborto, inteso come elemento d’emancipazione, soddisfano la parziale applicazione della legge 194.

Lì dove i consutori pubblici non arrivano a svolgere le loro funzioni, ecco che spuntano come funghi anche i CAV, Centri di Aiuto alla Vita. Ideati nel 1975 dal Movimento Italiano per la Vita con lo scopo di dare assistenza psicologica e sociale alla paternità e alla maternità responsabile, di tutelare la salute della donna e del nascituro e divulgare informazioni idonee a promuovere o prevenire una gravidanza, attraverso l’impegno di parroci, cappellani, suore, gruppi e famiglie. Quello del S.Eugenio, per esempio, è nato sotto la cura del Cappellano Angeloni. “Il movimento per la vita è la mente, il Cav è il braccio – racconta un operatore dell’associazione di lungotevere dei Vallati- sono gruppi di volontari che si riuniscono e occupano funzioni consultive”. Svolgono, quindi, una delle funzioni enumerate dalla legge 405 all’articolo 1 comma 4, dedicate ai consultori. Qui psicologi e psicoterapeuti vi accoglieranno per farvi “ragionare” ma anche per darvi in alcuni casi un aiuto. A Roma, è evidente, ce ne sono pochi perchè “non è un territorio facile”. In provincia, e al nord, lì dove i consultori fanno fatica a farsi valere e dove la promozione alla vita vince sull’aborto, i CAV fioriscono. Ma come i consultori, anche i Cav nascondono delle incoerenze.

La prima sembra essere quella di non saper distinguere la pillola del giorno dopo, un contraccetivo post-coitale e di emergenza, dall’aborto, l’interruzione di una gravidanza già accertata. In questo senso, se la negazione dell’assistenza “pro-aborto” può essere tutelata dall’obiezione di coscienza, la negazione alle pazienti del sostegno pre-aborto non è coperta da questo stesso diritto. Un operatrice del S.Eugenio dice, infatti, che, nel caso le quasi mamme non si convincessero a non abortire, loro non “sono disposti ad aiutarle nel loro intento”. “L’obiezione di coscienza esonera il personale sanitario ed esercente le attività ausiliarie dal compimento delle procedure e delle attività specificamente e necessariamente dirette a determinare l’interruzione della gravidanza, ma non dall’assistenza antecedente e conseguente all’intervento” (art.9). Donne lasciate sole di nuovo, insomma! Inoltre, la 194 titola cosi: “Norme per la tutela sociale della maternità e sull’interruzione volontaria della gravidanza” ma non di tutela del nascituro. Allora, la domanda sorge spontanea: conta di piu la madre o il bambino? Ecco che due visioni opposte si scontrano. Ricapitolando: da una parte i consultori pubblici, che rispecchiano e portano avanti una visione estremamente laica che esaspera l’aborto come presupposto essenziale dell’emancipazione femminile e che quindi pone l’accento sulla madre, dall’altra, i Cav, che totalmente a favore della tutela del benessere di un bambino non ancora nato, esautorano la legge del suo valore, in nome di una confessione religiosa, che non è religione di stato. In Italia, quindi, il dualismo madre-figlio è estremo: se da una parte i Cav accusano di diritto le strutture pubbliche di non rendere giustizia alla completa applicazione della legge 194, dall’altra ne stravolgono il senso in favore della “preferenze per le nascite”, dimenticando che la legge parla di donne e non di nascituri e concependo l’aborto come una pura forma di egoismo.

Questo viaggio-inchiesta si conclude qui, persuasi del fatto che l’aborto non richieda un’altra legge 194 che lo regolamenti. La normativa, infatti, non è da riformare ma semplicemente da applicare nella sua totaltà.

Due to my increasing workload I have decided to take a drastic step for the immediate future of Hope Lies at 24 Frames Per Second. Put simply, I don’t really have the time to keep the site running in the same manner as it has in the past. So, from today onwards I will be doing a post a week detailing each of the films I have seen in that week Alongside this I will run seperate posts for theatrical releases and the occasional in depth essay. Its a shame I know, at least compared to how the site has run in the past, but its literally a case of streamline or stop, which is something that I really don’t want to do! So, here goes -

I’m currently looking at films about film, so took in a fresh screening of Billy Wilder’s Sunset Boulevard. Somehow, a film that is technically a film noir somehow manages to evoke a sense of love and understanding for the cinema far deeper than I had previously given it credit for. Gloria Swanson is majestic in the lead role, with William Holden showing early signs of the “cool” that would become his later life trademark. What strikes most blatantly about Sunset Boulevard is the pitch perfect script by Wilder and Charles Brackett. Its easy to see why it was recently named the seventh greatest script of all time by the Writers Guild of America.

Gloria Swanson’s immortal cry of “All right, Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up” is paraphrased in John Waters’ Cecil B. Demented, an alternative take on the art of filmmaking. A solid cast can’t help a poorly structured and terribly scripted film, despite the intentions of the director. Its an interesting view, but a flawed one at that.

Coincidently I picked up Michel Gondry’s Be Kind Rewind for a bargain price over the weekend, and gave this rather modern take on the “film about film” a second viewing. The film has its flaws, but it oozes charm and creative integrity. There is just so much inventive flow on screen, it really can’t fail to impress.

While it isn’t a “film about film” I finally got around to watching Orson Welles’ Touch of Evil last week, despite owning the recent “three-cut” dvd edition for the best part of a year. Im taking a keen interest in 1930/40’s Hollywood at the moment and this proved a treat. Welles is almost unrecognisable in the role of Hank Quinlan, and creates a character as worthy as the many “dirty” cop roles that he no doubt inspired. Charlton Heston is bearable after a difficult start, in a casting decision is perhaps best described as downright bizarre. The surprise performance for this viewer came from Janet Leigh, an actress who I was previously only familiar with from King Kong. The famous opening shot proves technically impressive still, as does the film in general.

As a boy growing up The Quiet Man was always my favourite John Ford film. I have often found it incredibly frustrating that a credible home release has never seen the light, but the existing DVD release is at least watchable. The idyllic view of Ireland provides an incredibly comforting and relaxing picture, with the legendary fist fight recycling the locales that one has come to admire throughout the rest of the films running time in an interesting and unique manner.

I also took in a screening of Ford’s The Grapes of Wrath. The expressionist lighting (especially prevalent in the early sections of the film) recalls the silent film from the Murnau Sunrise side of the industry, and the sbtext is perhaps even more appropriate than when the film was produced almost 70 years ago.

John Huston is a filmmaker that constantly amazes me, with every piece of his work that I see bringing something new to the table. It’s worth noting that the film of his that I watched most recently prior to Key Largo was 1979’s Wise Blood, a film, or indeed a difference in film that displays Huston’s variety laden career. If one were to note his earlier work, in the shape of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, or The Maltese Falcon, and then were to see his latter work such as Under the Volcano, or The Dead I would be foolhardy to blame them for thinking the two lists of films represented two different filmmakers. And lets not forget that The African Queen and The Night of the Iguana slot into the middle of his career too. Diverse is perhaps too light a word to describe Huston’s oeuvre.

When your head says one thing and your whole life says another, your head always loses.

Key Largo is a situation based drama set largely within the confines of a hotel as a hurricane blows outside. Former-GI Frank McCloud (Humphrey Bogart) holes up in the hotel, alongside the father and wife of his former comrade (Lionel Barrymore and Lauren Bacall) to see out the storm, alongside an extradited gangster (Edward G. Robinson) using the Florida Keys locale as a stop gap between Cuba and his return to the US. As his secret is discovered things turn violent as we see our three protagonists caught between a ferocious act of a nature, and a ferocious act of mankind.

Key Largo would be the fourth and final collaboration between Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, and as such the chemistry that has built up over the years in which they worked together comes together in this final piece. Bogart provides the usual laidback cool that one expects of him, while Bacall is simply radiant as the mysterious widow that sees him as a replacement of sorts for her deceased beloved. Able support is provided by Lionel Barrymore as the accommodating hotelier and Claire Trevor, the only member of the cast to win an oscar for the film, in her turn as the turncoat moll.

As one would expect with a John Huston film the camerawork is outstanding. One highly original moment consists of a camera being placed on a boat, which is then pulled closer to the figures on screen. Its simple but incredibly effective. I noted during my screening of the film how the entire narrative feels like one long scene, in that each scene has very little in the way of a break, with each one flowing into each other  in real time. This allusion is broken towards the end of the picture, when the action moves away from the hotel, but for most of the films 100 minutes we are rarely given any kind of hold up in the flow of the picture.

Key Largo is a wonderfully evocative picture, that really holds up over six decades on. That Huston produced this in the same year as the magnificent The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is little short of staggering.

Melospiza lincolnii  Bruant de Lincoln  /  Lincoln’s Sparrow  

Fearful, Lincoln’s Sparrow nests in peat bogs, prairies and forestry cutting zones in Québec, the Maritimes and the southern United States. Essentially an insect-eater, it also feeds on seeds that it finds by searching in the ground. Its length is 14 to 15 cm.

Farouche, le bruant de Lincoln niche dans les tourbières, les prés et les zones de coupes forestières du Québec, des Maritimes et du sud des États-Unis. Essentiellement insectivore, il se nourrit également de graines qu’il trouve en fouillant le sol. Il a une longueur de 14 à 15 cm.

Acrobate et espiègle, la mésange à tête brune a pour territoire tout le Canada. Au Québec, on l’observe de la zone boréale à la toundra, essentiellement dans les forêts d’épinettes et de sapins, où elle se nourrit d’insectes et de graines. Sédentaire, cette mésange ne migre pas et affronte les hivers les plus rudes sans aucune difficulté, et ce, malgré sa petite taille. Elle mesure 13 à 14 cm de longueur.

Regulus calendula  Roitelet à couronne rubis  /  Ruby-crowned Kinglet  

The Ruby-crowned Kinglet makes its kingdom in conifer forests. Seen throughout Canada during the nesting season, it is found during other periods throughout the territory of Québec and the Maritimes. In winter, it prefers to migrate toward the southern United States, where it can pursue its diet, mainly made up of insects, fruits, weeds and sap. An energetic bird, the Ruby-crowned Kinglet is rarely motionless, and its wings shiver when it cries out. Its length is 10 to 11 cm.

Le roitelet à couronne rubis fait des forêts de conifères son royaume. Observé dans tout le Canada en période de nidification, on le reconnaît, en d’autres temps, dans l’ensemble du territoire québécois et des Maritimes. En saison hivernale, il préfère migrer vers le sud des États-Unis, où il peut retrouver son régime alimentaire qui est constitué essentiellement d’insectes, de fruits, de mauvais herbes et de sève. Énergique, le roitelet à couronne rubis est rarement immobile et frémit des ailes lorsqu’il crie. Il a une longueur de 10 à 11 cm.

Ma come… la sottosegretaria al Welfare Eugenia Roccella dice che la Legge 194 funziona, che “non va modificata in nessuna parte”, visto il calo degli aborti del 4,1% rispetto al 2007, l’Agenzia del farmaco introduce in Italia la commercializzazione della pillola RU486, che si inserisce pienamente nei parametri della citata legge, e il Vaticano fa la voce grossa, parlando addirittura di “scomunica” per le donne che ne faranno ricorso e per i medici che la somministreranno.Scomunica. Vuol dire estromissione dalla comunità-Chiesa, espulsione dal mondo cattolico. Si rischia ancora una volta di impostare il dibattito su una mera discussione teologica sulla vita e la morte senza tenere in alcun conto la volontà degli esseri umani, delle donne in questo caso.
Un rischio che corriamo noi, anche chi, come il sottoscritto, è dichiaratamente agnostico, impermeabile a qualunque sentimento religioso storicamente o attualmente definito, ma non insensibile al fascino del mistero, del confine tutto umano dell’impossibile conoscenza totale di un senso per l’esistenza.
Un rischio che non corre la Chiesa Cattolica che tiene in così tanto disprezzo la volontà umana da attribuirle un libero arbitrio concesso dall’Essere supremo (la parola “Dio” è abusata e invocata tanto quanto la parola libertà…) agli esseri viventi: insomma, una volontà a metà. Vuoi e puoi se rispetti determinati canoni, se non infrangi i comandamenti, se segui le Sacre scritture, se obbedisci al magistero di Oltre Tevere.
La donna che, nel travagliato cammino libero della decisione di non avere un figlio, di rinunciare a questa possibilità del tutto autonomamente e legalmente, decide in tal senso è già scomunicata: è condannata, in pratica.
Ecco le moderne streghe che la chiesa mette sul rogo del pregiudizio generale. Pronunciando la parola “scomunica”, sapendo bene che ha un valore se e solo se si accetta l’autorità morale e teologica della Chiesa di Roma, il Vaticano opera comunque una distinzione e sancisce che esiste da oggi una diversità in più: chi decide e chi non decide di abortire con la RU486.
Il punto è proprio questo: dietro alla condanna dell’azione su un piano strettamente legato all’etica religiosa e alla conseguente disciplina di fede, c’è il montare di un pregiudizio che si scatena contro una libertà che non è così agognata, che non ha il sapore della felicità, ma che spesso è solamente l’ultimo nome che ha un diritto per troppo tempo negato in nome di domeniddio, in nome dei risvolti sacri e inviolabili della vita.
L’aborto chirurgico è il demonio di oggi solamente perché incrina il principio su cui si regge la sociologia clericale che fonda il suo essere sulla proprietà della vita nelle mani di un Ente supremo e non nella esclusiva, unica e irrinunciabile proprietà che ogni uomo, che ogni donna ha e deve avere di sé stesso. “Io sono mio”, per dirla con Stirner. Ma tra l’individualismo esasperato e l’espropriazione deistica di noi stessi c’è una via di mezzo che passa per l’autodeterminazione cosciente, aliena da dogmi e da prevenzioni di qualunque sorta, e che è l’unica possibilità di evitare sensi di colpa per tutte quelle donne che, giovani e meno giovani, si vengono a trovare nella situazione di dover scegliere principalmente della loro vita.
E ne hanno tutto il diritto, tanto quanto – in inversione proporzionale – non ha diritto il Vaticano e nessun altro di porre bollini di “scomuniche” sulle loro teste.
Si potrebbero dire mille cose sugli atti di “scomunica” e sui comportamenti della Chiesa Cattolica immediatamente dopo gli effetti degli allontanamenti dalla comunità ecclesiale. Si potrebbe dire che è e resta un semplice atto di proclamazione e che non ha valore legale.
Si potrebbe anche dire che la scomunica sovente viene comminata e altrettanto soventemente viene tolta, con la concessione del perdono papale. Insomma, la Chiesa si è inventata per secoli norme e tradizioni da seguire salvo adattarle ai tempi quando queste entravano in crisi per via del fatto che la maggior parte delle popolazioni le abbandonava.
Evitando il rischio di non essere più la guida degli uomini e delle donne, la Chiesa ha abbandonato quelle ritualità severe che si è data di tempo in tempo e si è adeguata alla “vox populi”.
Oggi è molto facile per un pontificato come quello di Ratzinger esprimere giudizi, condanne e anatemi dal profumo incensato dell’anacronismo, dal cattivo odore agre di sacrestia, in un momento in cui i tradizionalismi sono alla ribalta delle cronache, con le clessidre che corrono all’indietro senza sapere se vanno avanti o se tornano ancora più indietro, con le lancette degli orologi che impazziscono sotto i decreti governativi sui migranti, le leggi securitarie e le disposizioni razziste che ci fanno fare un balzo agli anni ‘30 del “secolo breve”.
Infatti, il Concilio Vaticano II è, come la nostra Costituzione, nell’ambito italiano, dimenticato dalle attuali autorità dello Stato monarchico retto da Joseph Ratzinger. C’è una perfetta sintonia tra la Chiesa e la politica italiana: anche in questo l’anomalia dello Stivale si vede tutta a confronto con la laica Francia, con la Spagna zapaterista e persino con l’austerità protestante della Germania o dell’Inghilterra.
Ancora una volta i diritti delle donne sono sotto accusa in quanto eresia antica di un dominio patriarcale che, a leggere Dan Brown, figura romanzescamente nella storia del cattolicesimo, ma che, alla prova dei fatti, è l’ammanto di un potere che si autoalimenta sulle sofferenze psicologiche, fisiche e morali di milioni e milioni di persone. Scomunicate il Vaticano lasciando libere le donne di decidere della loro vita, della loro salute.

Perhaps the most notable film of the neo-realist movement, Vittorio De Sica’s The Bicycle Thieves is as emotionally involving as its story is simple. Enormously successful upon its release, being that it achieved huge commercial and critical success outside of its native Italy, the film has remained a perenial favourite of viewers and scholars alike ever since.

The tale of unemployed Antonio (Lamberto Maggiorani) who receives a job on the proviso that he has a bicycle, the film serves to remind how it is the smallest of factors that can influence a great deal. Having had his bicycle stolen on his first day in the job, we follow Antonio and his son Bruno (Enzo Staiola) as they search for his missing bicycle throughout the underside of Rome.  We follow our protagonists as they encounter various situations that serve to remind them of their situation in life, with some serving as a reminder of the positive aspects of what they have, and others reminding them of the oppresive and negative aspects. 

Due to the nature of the opening section of the film, and the way in which the struggle of the unemployed is laid out, the impact of him losing the bike is made all the more effective and emotional. The sacrifice of the bed sheets (to a man with a staggering amount of linen that will surely never be sold) in order to purchase his pawned bike creates a focus point for the level of desperation the people of post-war Italy are living in. So much so, that when Antonio’s bike is stolen, the bicycle thief hasnt just stolen his bike, he’s stolen his job, he’s stolen his livelihood, his ambition and even his confidence. The bike is effectively a symbol in an alagorical tale.

The hopeless nature of Antonio’s search for his bicycle is outlined from the start, with the protagonists seemingly lost in a sea of bicycles at the local market. Its the perfect opportunity for some outstanding photography, which borders on experimental, such is the juxtoposition of the imagery alongside the sounds of bells ringing and crowds talking. The Bicycle Thieves is an incredibly accessible piece of cinema, and as someone who is largely unfamiliar with Neo-Realism I found it to be a successful experience, especially when compared to the recently viewed Rome, Open City (Here)

Dramatically the film is very much a character piece, and aside from some stunning photography, the film relies on little more than the tale of Antonio and Bruno, and their adventure of sorts. The bond between the two is notable for being one of cinema’s great father and son relationships, with Bruno’s crumbling respect for his father being the emotional backbone for the film. If one were to compare the way that Bruno looks upon his father in his first scene, with that of the last, a great and deeply affecting difference would be noted. The downfall of Antonio is the main focus of the story, but its the involvement and witnessing of the act by Bruno that really hits home. Bruno and Antonio are used as tools for social commentary for much of the running time, with the most noted sequence being the one in the restaurant. Unfamiliar with the concept of an eaterie that isn’t a pizza parlour (the food of the peasant in post-war Italy), Bruno, unable to actually use a knife and fork, resorts to using his hands. The concept of justice is explored deeply too, with the role of an injust situation being the straw that broke the camels back effectively. This theme in particular is especially resonent, with public confidence in justice at a particular low. The Bicycle Thieves is a film about the failure of the judicial system and the impact that bad decisions can have, with Antonio being perhaps the ultimate display of innocence or naivety, in that he simply wants to exist. He isn’t a man of many means, he doesn’t want for much, just the opportunity to raise and support his family.  

The Bicycle Thieves is a very tense piece of cinema, much in the same way that a film like The Wages of Fear is. The sequence involving the inevitable theft of the bicycle is a piece of pacing genius, with the lead up to it being mischievous and self referential. This tense attitude returns several times, with the drowning boy scene being a particular standout, as well as the sequence involving Antonio accuses the thief and the scene in which he himself steals the bicycle. This scene in particular, with its orchestra of crowds cheering, as if to beckon Antonio, is especially strong. The viewer feels for Antonio in the respect that we don’t want him to resort to stealing, yet know it is inevitable. During the build up to Antonio’s act we see him queuing for a bus, the constricting nature of which serves as the perfect anchor point to the freedom offered by the bicycle. 

Tim Burton famously riffed on The Bicycle Thieves in his Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, alas with a more suitable “happy ending”, which is something I desperately wanted from Di Sica’s opus, alas it wasn’t to be; as inevitable a climax as Antonio’s own plight, The Bicycle Thieves is one of cinema’s greats.

Dallo stesso ideatore di Smart Touch ed XpressNote, una nuova applicazione molto simpatica ed utile allo steso tempo. Si tratta di XpressAlarm, un antifurto per i dispositivi S60 5th edition proprio come quello di una macchina. Una volta installata ed attivata l’applicazione, basta bloccare il telefono perchè si inserisca l’allarme che comincerà a suonare non appena il dispositivo venga estratto dalla vostra tasca da mani malintenzionate. Per zittire la sirena, basta poi sbloccare il telefono. Nelle impostazioni è possibile settare il tempo che occorre prima che la sirena cominci a suonare, così come attivare e disattivare i suoni di avviso per l’allarme inserito o disinserito. Sicuramente il video a seguire illustra adeguatamente il funzionamento dell’applicazione.

L’applicazione è sviluppata in Python, per cui occore installare o avere installato l’interprete Python for S60 sul dispositivo, necessariamente prima dell’applicazione e dare ad entrambi (interprete ed applicazione) la stessa destinazione, verosimilmente, nel caso specifico, la memoria telefono. C’è anche da sottolineare che l’applicazione funziona con le versioni dell’interprete Python, non inferiori alla 1.9.4. Per saperne di più riguardo Python ed il download vi rimando alla pagina di supporto.

Come sempre il sito è in russo, per cui sono costretto a fornirvi il download diretto dell’applicazione, ma mia raccomandazione rimane comunque quella di visitare il sito del produttore per feed e donazioni, magari con l’aiuto di uno strumento di traduzione online.

Andando a cercare quest’applicazione, ho potuto notare che il produttore ha anche aggiornato tutte le precedenti versioni delle sue applicazioni perchè queste possano ora funzionare con Python 1.9.4, ovvero l’ultima beta disponibile dell’interprete e con cui si erano verificati dei problemi.

Dunque anche per queste, nuovi download:

Smart Touch: l’applicazione  permette il controllo del  PC attraverso il dispositivo e connessione bluetooth. Sono presenti le funzioni

• mouse
  
• player, per i controlli volume, mute, play/pause, precedente/successivo
• tasti, per il controllo dei tasti sù, giù, esc, invio, concepita per la gestione dei giochi.

L’utilizzo dell’applicazione è molto semplice, si tratta di due moduli, l’uno da installare sul dispositivo e l’altro da avviare sul PC (client). Fateli partire entrambi per ottenere l’effetto. XpressNote: Prender nota a “mano libera con carta e penna” sul propro dispositivo S60 touch screen. L’applicazione è semplice e funziona molto bene. L’interfaccia grafica è davvero carina. Per ulteriori informazioni vi rimando al precedente post.

Aggiungo XpressPiano, per cui non occorrre descrizione e ricordo che anche in questo caso si tratta di un’applicazione sviluppata in Python.

Nuovo aggiornamento per PyS60 (Python For S60), l’interprete che permette l’utilizzo di applicazioni scritte in linguaggio di programmazione Python, su dispositivi S60. Qui per saperne di più. Si tratta della beta 1.9.4, dunque il quarto aggiornamento a partire dalla versione 1.9.0 in cui è stato introdotto il supporto per Python 2.5.4 (l’SDK Software Development Kit, strumenti di sviluppo software per il programmatore) e ciò si traduce in maggiori opportunità per gli sviluppatori. Da qui un’ulteriore serie di beta si susseguirà fino al raggiungimento del traguardo finale rappresentato dalla versione 2.0 stabile. In questa versione 1.9.4, sono presenti molte nuove funzionalità e miglioramenti in stabilità, sono state aggiunte Nuove API (Application Programming Interface, set di istruzioni che permettono al programmatore di aggregarsi con il software ad Hardware o livelli di software superiore, presenti in un sistema), novità per quel ch riguarda il pacchetto d’installazione, ScriptShell compatibile con l’interfaccia touch screen.

• Nokia ha signato un unico pacchetto software installabile su tutti i dispositivi S60 3rd e 5th edition.
• Ora durante l’installazione, viene riconosciuta l’applicazione Python esistente e raccolti i moduli persi su cui essa si basa, installandoli con i files dell’applicazione. “Module Repository”
• Tutti i componenti dell’interprete vengono installati con un unico pacchetto d’installazione. Tuttavia questa caratteristica è disponibile solo per dispositivi S60 3rd edition e solo se aggiornati all’ultimo firmware.
• Nuove API
• Finalmente una ScriptShell (per l’esecuzione degi script) compatibile con l’interfaccia touch screen dei dispositivi S60 5th edition.

Ricordo che occorre installare nell’ordine, interprete in principio e relativa Scriptshell successivamente. Anche se è possibile scegliere di destinare l’applicazione sulla memory card o sulla memoria telefono a partire dalla versione 1.9.0, consigliato optare per la memoria telefono. Le vecchie versioni dovrebbero sovrascriversi, tuttavia consigliata la rimozione prima di aggiornare.
