I have posted a few songs from “Aan” (1952), but I was not aware about the existence of this song. This song is sung by Rafi and Shamshad Begam.

The song is picturised on Dilip Kumar who is incarcerated ( alongwith his sidekick Mukri) in a dungeon by Nadira. The female voice is picturised on Nadira’s sidekick who is asked by Nadira to bring Dilp Kumar before her. I am not aware who this female sidekick is. As always,I am counting upon my knowledgeable readers to inform me who she is.

The song is written by Shakeel Badayuni and Naushad is the music director.

Jack Benny Christmas Shows

Before television, Christmas generally included a well-loved or much anticipated radio show with a Christmas theme. Not a year went by when a special presentation of “A Christmas Carol”, “It’s a Wonderful Life”, “Miracle on 34th Street”, or a Disney movie converted into a radio play was not heard! And Christmas just wasn’t Christmas without a special Jack Benny Christmas episode—the best of which, consisted of Jack and Mary shopping for Christmas presents for the gang. This most hilarious of all of Jack Benny’s Christmas shopping shows, consisted of Jack shopping for a particular item to give to Don Wilson, his announcer.

It all started in 1946 when the ever-thrifty Jack Benny decided to buy shoelaces for Don. Shoelaces for Christmas? Well, that’s just the Jack was! Cheap! Hilarity ensued when Jack couldn’t decide on plastic-tipped or metal-tipped shoelaces. As soon as Jack would step away from the counter, he would change his mind. Metal-tipped shoelaces tend to rust, but plastic-tipped shoelaces tend to crack. The show would always end with the clerk (played by Mel Blanc) going insane.

The next such Christmas show was in 1951 when Jack bought cuff links for the hefty Don Wilson, but made several trips back to the counter to change the engraving. In 1952, Jack bought a gopher trap; in 1953 he bought a box of dates and in 1954 he bought a paint set. Included below are also the 1947 and 1950 episodes, both of which make reference to the 1946 shoelace episode, but don’t include the back-and-forth shopping routines.

I just quickly threw these episodes together, so if I’m missing any of the classic “shopping for Don” episodes, let me know!

Enjoy and Merry Christmas!

People, especially critics, are funny about movie clichés and formulas. While we all complain when a film seems predictable, formulaic or clichéd, the most popular films often adhere to a pretty strict formula. Hollywood musicals. The Bond films. Slasher flicks. Romantic comedies. The thousands of series Westerns. The list goes on and on.

So if the clichés and formulas themselves aren’t the problem, maybe it’s laziness we have issues with. Bring a fresh approach to the same old thing, however slight, and we’ll lap it up. But crank out that same old thing, the same old way, and you run the risk of being nailed to the wall.

Carson City (1952), the second of six Randolph Scott Westerns directed by Andre De Toth, helps illustrate this. It’s certainly got its share of clichés. A saloon brawl. A shootout or two. A mineshaft accident. A stagecoach holdup. A train robbery. It’s all there, along with a pretty typical lost-love subplot. But thanks to Scott’s presence and De Toth’s always-tight direction, you’re pretty satisfied when “The End” pops up.

There are attempts to break away from convention, however. Sloan Nibley, who’d written a slew of the later Roy Rogers pictures, helped cook up an urbane bad guy, the Champagne Bandit. (In fact, Carson City started out with that title.) But the finished film — from a screenplay by Nibley, Eric Jonsson and Winston Miller — doesn’t do enough with him, so an interesting idea ends up little more than a gimmick. De Toth later wrote, “I didn’t like the script, I needed the money, the pastures started to look much greener on the other side of the fence I was straddling.”

The Champagne Bandit (Raymond Massey)and his gang are robbing stagecoaches to get the gold dust being hauled out of Carson City to nearby Virginia City. Thinking that a railroad line would result in fewer holdups, a banker hires engineer Jeff Kinkaid (Scott) to lay the track and get the gold flowing again. This proves unpopular with the townspeople — and the Champagne Bandit.

In Andre De Toth’s capable hands, all this predictability flies by before you have enough time to notice how familiar it all is. His stuff is lean, fast and cynical — and his Scott pictures hint at the films Scott would later make with Budd Boetticher.

There seems to be renewed interest in De Toth these days, which isn’t surprising. He’s certainly worth seeking out. I’d recommend Pitfall, Man In The Saddle (another Scott), Crime Wave, Day Of The Outlaw and Play Dirty.

In the middle of this rediscovery, Warner Archive has released Carson City as part of its on-demand DVD-R program. While it’s a bare-bones release — the film and that’s it — it’s a nice one. Carson City was the first film in WarnerColor (more on that), and the transfer is crisp and sharp. The interior scenes look good, lush even, while the contrast in the exteriors is a little harsh — giving you a good idea of how WarnerColor looked on film. It’s presented full-frame, which is correct for 1952. There’s a little dust from time to time, which I kind of like. Having grown up with films around the house, usually 16mm, I have a soft spot for a little wear and tear.

It’s hard for me to be objective with a Randolph Scott movie. Carson City’s a good one. The DVD’s fine. And you can get it here.

Arlene Corwin’s Open-Ended Biography

(10.3.2007 updated 10.24.2007 updated 1.3.2008; updated December 15, 2009)

Arlene Corwin (born Arlene Faith Nover) is an American jazz singer and pianist, poet, teacher and practitioner of Yoga. Born November 8, 1934 in the Williamsburg Maternity Hospital, Brooklyn, New York. She has two children. Jonathan Eric Corwin (born July 24. 1956 and) Jennifer Nover Council (born February 2, 1964). Mother Margy Lillian (born Brown). Father Albert S. Nover. Both were hairdressers, owning a beauty salon together. Everyone was musical on both sides of the family. Mother sang, could play some piano. Father was a gifted sculptor and wood carver, played a little harmonica and mandolin.

Early Life

Started studying piano age 8. Studied voice at the famous 1650 Broadway with ‘coach’ Matty Levine. Did a little recording at aged 10 in Nola Studios. (The record has since disappeared) At 12 she started studying harp with Meyer Rosen (Julliard and NBC Orchestra) and the occasional piano lesson with an NBC pianist who taught her how to read chord changes, seeing at once that she was not interested in learning classical piano.

As a child she had already sung at weddings, bar mitzvahs and for the USO, raising bonds for the war effort. At 13, having a boyfriend who played the saxophone and who listened to Symphony Sid, jazz disc jockey whose late night show originated from Birdland, she awakened to jazz, listening to the late night show “under my blanket”. “A turning point”, she says. (Well before “Lullaby of Birdland” was put to words Arlene had written a lyric of her own – a lyric she still sings today) At 14,she was playing for a dancing school once a week. Then she got an accidental job (“slipping in on a banana peel when the singer got sick”) in a Brooklyn nightclub singing with a group. “Mom and dad chaperoned, of course”.

1950s

She began to sing regularly when again, out of the blue, an agent rang offering a job for a hundred dollars a week to play at the Mayflower Hotel in Manhattan. It was a restaurant owned by Bob Olin, a former light heavyweight world champion. “I was so naïve I played the whole evening without ever taking a break. Who knew about breaks? Why they kept me I’ve no idea.” But they did and the steady salary of $100.00 a week (which she gave directly to her mother, any other choice never occurring to her) and the experience of having to make a varied program led to her singing to the piano, and eventually to playing to the singing. At this time she was still in high school as attending the prestigious High School of Music & Art as a harpist. She graduated from Music & Art getting a scholarship to Hofstra College as a music major.

Then in 1952, while still at Hofstra College (now university), she was playing on the weekends in a Hempstead, Long Island nightclub-restaurant when Slim Gaillard, who’d come to see Jack Teagarden (also working there) began to take notice of her. He started showing up regularly. There he met Arlene’s mother Margy, and the two eventually opened a jazz nightclub, the first to cater to blacks and whites. It was called The Turf and it, like Birdland had its own radio show, for which Arlene wrote the theme song “The Slim Gaillard Show”. Now she was standing as well as sitting, getting a chance to sit in and sing as often as she chose. The die was cast. It was jazz, cool jazz.

Early Influences

In 1954, on the day she ought to have been attending her college graduation, she married Bob Corwin, a 21-year-old jazz pianist with the Don Elliot Quartet. Because Bob toured, Arlene began her new stage of education: listening to Don’s group while they played on the same bill as the jazz greats of the 50’s. There was Helen Merrill at George Wein’s Storyville in Boston, Terry Gibbs and Illinois Jacquet in Detroit, Bill Evans, Cy Coleman, Bernard Peiffer, Tal Farlowe,Johnny Smith John Mehagan and Billy Taylor (who had also performed at the Turf) at the sophisticated Composer in Manhattan. ” It was also a chance to see and listen to other singers of the day. New York was marvelous in those days. I saw Peggy Lee at Basin Street, Blossom Dearie at Trudy’s in the village, Oscar Peterson, Marian McPartland at the Hickory House, Sheila Jordan, Morgana King. It was THE university for me. I was introduced to Tony Fruscella, the tragic, unsung genius of the trumpet, ‘who I took on my gigs, but to whom I was actually the apprentice’ – and through Tony to Morgana King and Beverly Getz, the talented [and equally tragic] wife of Stan Getz. I feel blessed to have experienced jazz at that time. The guys would gossip about who played ‘behind’ or ‘ahead’ of the beat, bass lines, good changes, bad changes. No Music & Art or Hofstra did that. I learned almost the whole of what is now called The American Songbook. And I, I was sounding like Sarah Vaughn with a little voice.”

Hanging Around Manhattan; Not This, Not That…

Living in New York, and looking for a niche she spent time, as other musicians did, at the Musicians Union Local 802 or Charlie’s Tavern where jobs could show up. In this way, there were weeks and weekends away with big bands: Tommy Dorsey’s Orchestra under the leadership of Warren Covington, Claude Thornhill and Larry Sonn.

“When you hang around New York all kinds of opportunities show up”. And so, she got a leading role in a B film called “Jukebox Racket’, wrote the score for another B film called, at the time “She Should Have Stayed In Bed”, later to be called ‘1,000 Shapes Of A Female: see IDMB (the company, called Exploit Films was owned by Errol Flynn “tall, big in every way, veins on his face, but exuding old world charm” He was quite, quite overwhelming.”

Then there was a bit part in John Cassavetes “Shadows”, followed by the lead in what has become a cult ‘beat’ musical called “The Nervous Set” by Fran and Jay Landesman where she introduced the now-standards “Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most and “Ballad Of The Sad Young Men”, both subsequently recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, Shirley Bassey and numberless major artists. She studied acting with Joshua Shelley. “It was a time to find out who and what I was. “I was definitely not an actress. I was too introverted and none of those clothes fit” she says.

More Influences and more Not This, Not That…

In 1959 she met Johnny Burke (Burke & Van Heusen) who took her under his wing, taking her to Hollywood to demonstrate his show “Donnybrook” for Rosalind Russell and husband, producer Frederick Brisson “It was a glitzy time. I stayed at Bob Hope’s house in Palm Springs, met Frank Sinatra and his then fiancee Juliet Prowse, Jerry Lewis, Marlene Deitrich, had my own suite in Las Vegas , traveled first class, but was so introverted I always kept to myself, never saying much, definitely not participating in any of these scenes. Those clothes didn’t fit either.”

All the while she returned to the intimacy of New York supper clubs. They were the bottom line, singing and playing.

It was during the supper club period, she met Al Weissman who became her manager. She was signed to the Joe Glazer Agency and began to tour with her own trio. “Wherever I went they’d say, “You know, there’s just been a girl here who sounds like you. Her name was Barbra something. I suppose we had Brooklyn Jewishness in common. ” (She too was signed with Glazer.)

Although published by Frank Publishing (owned by composer Frank Loesser) years later she asked for the songs back because “nothing happened.” “It was a period of promise, a period I was not equipped to fulfill”.

1960s-1970s

In 1962 it was back to Hollywood with Al Weissman and high hopes. “I had some jobs, but never in my genre.” Back to New York. A little jaunt of songwriting with singer Dick Haymes. A short marriage of four months to Richard Robin Palmer.

Greece, Lebanon, Greece, Oxford – Yoga & Jazz

In 1966, by way of Paris, Greece (where she and husband Jim Council were neighbors with Leonard Cohen and Marianne) and Lebanon, “where I actually managed to do some television, singing jazz”, she settled in Oxford, England for the next 18 years, teaching yoga,(“lectured and demonstrated in what must have been a hundred Women’s Insitutes, posed for one of the very first health magazines called Health & Fitness, wrote articles on nutrition, had a weekly radio spot on a little radio show for BBB Oxford actually doing Yoga on radio while describing each pose with a microphone up my nose, did a tape on meditation – it was a lot of Yoga”) and singing and playing, being voted Best Jazz Singer in the Midlands 1972, appearing at Ronnie Scott’s three times. She did 3 television shows; a late night BBC jazz show called “In The Cool Of The Evening”, radio for BBC overseas, was invited over to Amsterdam to do Dutch radio, sang at universities around England, (“one night opposite Pink Floyd, “who were just starting out, I suppose”), the American air bases.

She appeared several times at The Stables in Wavendon (run by John Dankworth – now Sir John Dankworth – and Cleo Laine -now Dame Cleo Laine – while at the same time giving weekly yoga lessons to a group there, (which included Dame Cleo – “a wonderful

yogin”). The Wavendon All-Music Plan, later known simply as WAP “was the most stimulating and original enterprise I’ve ever encountered, pairing all kinds of musical genre. I even played on the same bill as Vladimir Ashkenazy.”

Starting in 1969 and all during the 70’s fate gave a push to the yoga side of things and Arlene was teaching yoga classes in doctor’s offices for hyper-tense, cardiac and overweight men. teaching regularly at conferences for IBM. She gave demonstrations, lectured all over for the Women’s Institute, posed and wrote for Health and Fitness Magazine (summer issue 1982) a book called The New Manual Of Yoga by Karen Ross (1973) wrote articles on nutrition, made a cassette called This Is Meditation. It was a full double life with Yoga taking half the time and singing the other half.

1980s to now.

In 1983 she once again ran into Slim Gaillard – this time in London. He asked her to appear on a television show he was producing that was to star himself, Kai Winding and Wayne Shorter. It was the last appearance she ever made in England. In 1984, finding Sweden fertile ground for singer/pianists, and meeting and falling in love with Kent Anderson, she moved to Sweden where she lives until today, performing, and writing regularly for “Live With Good Intentions” an online magazine.

Still growing, still changing

The latest news – 2009 and 25 years later, aged 75: a cd of her own songs for Imogen Records produced by George Reece, a concert of Johnny Mercer to commemorate his 100th birthday, poetry grown to 2000 poems (see Arlene Corwin Poetry).

2009 finds her favorite project on Google called Arlene Corwin’s Poetry, a project that started in 1949 or about 2,000 poems ago.

No, I shall not rant on about how there were Simpler Times once, every stage in this life poses its

No, I shall not rant on about how there were Simpler Times once, every stage in this life poses its problems, questions and evaluations. And if you remember a time you think to be “simpler”, then you’re a mistaken fool who was either; a) too drunk to remember the problems, questions and evaluations previously posed, or b) too young to actually physically remember it.

The reason I mention Simpler Times is that from all the beer I have tasted in my life I have discovered that this particular brand is the one that offers the most alcohol percentage at the best value for money. Trader Joes: $3.99. And it really does make your life more “simple” (see part a), at least temporarily anyway. “And in today’s economic climate” this is what we strive for, save for and commiserate with. People will always have money to eat out and drink more.

So here, I offer this as advice of today and if you’re here reading this then it’s likely that you currently don’t have a job, so instead go down to Trader Joes and pick up a pack of Simpler Times and allow your life to be Simplified.

Of course, wine in most of its more vinegary formats will be actually better value but then that would render this Post’s title useless and impotent if you will, like Simpler Times will if you let too much into your veins.

Lately my head has been stuck in 1952.

They were probably simpler times.

Open wide and relax, your life really isn’t that bad.

Number 8: Emil Zatopek , winning the 5000m, 10 000m and the marathon at the Olympics in Helsinki 195

Number 8: Emil Zatopek , winning the 5000m, 10 000m and the marathon at the Olympics in Helsinki 1952. (Video here)

Emil Zatopek was just an ordinary long-distance runner before the Olympic Games in Helsinki 1952, but afterwards he was one of the most famous athletes of all time, nicknamed the “Czech Locomotive”. Before 1952, Zatopek had already won the Olympic Gold Medal in the 10km run in London in 1948, where he did not get a lot publicity because of recent World War II.

Therefore one can say that it was no surprise that Zatopek won the 5km and 10km races in Helsinki, being the defending champion and favourite in both competitions. His real Olympic Moment came in the marathon race and is until today one of the most amazing success stories of the modern Olympic Games. Zatopek only decided in the last minute to sign up for the Olympic marathon race after he had won the other two races. The incredible fact about his decision: he never ran a marathon before in his life! However, Zatopek had a simple strategy for the race. His plan was to run at the same pace as the world record holder and favorite, who was the British runner Jim Peters. After about fifteen kilometres Zatopek realised that Peters had started the race far too fast and thus asked him (!!!): What do you think of the race so far? Peters answered that the pace was very slow so far. So Zatopek simply increased the speed of his run to overtake Peters. …the Brit never finished the marathon and Zatopek won the first marathon of his life with a new world record!

Obviously, Zatopek became a hero in the Czech Republic but for all sport fans all over the world. But Zatopek also reformed Sport Science because he went harder than any other world-class athlete had before through brutally training methods. For example, Zatopek often trained in heavy working shoes instead of running shoes as it made him faster and the running in running shoes at competitions easier. Zatopek was also famous for the tortured facial expressions throughout his running. Asked about it, he only gave the simple answer: “I was not talented enough to run and smile at the same time”… . What an athlete!

Here is one of the memorable songs from this movie. It is sung by Lata. Noor Lucknowi is the lyricist and C Ramchandra composed the music.

I am very weak in identifying the actresses of that era, so I am not aware who is the actress on which this song is picturised. I request my readers to help me identify her. (P.S.- She is Jayshree. I thank Peevesie’s mom for identifying her).

Along with Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Marina Sirtis, Colm Meaney and Jeffrey Combs, he is one of only six actors to appear in the finales of two different “Star Trek” series. (“Star Trek: The Next Generation” (1987) and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” (1993))

Has stated that his favorite episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (1987) is “The Drumhead”.

Along with Armin Shimerman, he is one of only two actors to appear in eleven different seasons of “Star Trek” (“Star Trek: The Next Generation” (1987) Seasons One through Seven and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” (1993) Seasons Four through Seven.)

Played the same character, Worf, on “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (1987) and “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” (1993) for twelve consecutive years from 1987 to 1999. The only other actor to do this is Colm Meaney.

He currently serves as a member of the Air Force Aviation Heritage Foundation.

Has appeared with Rene Auberjonois in five different productions: Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991), “Aladdin” (1994), “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” (1993), “The Savage Dragon” (1996) and “Captain Simian & The Space Monkeys” (1996).

Previously appeared with four of his future “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” (1993) co-stars on “Star Trek” before joining the cast of that series. He appeared with Colm Meaney in many episodes of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (1987), Armin Shimerman in the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (1987) episodes “Haven”, “The Last Outpost”, “Peak Performance” and “Firstborn”, Rene Auberjonois in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) and Alexander Siddig in the “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (1987) episode “Birthright Part I” (although he and Siddig did not share any scenes).

Made a grand total of 282 “Star Trek” appearances. He appeared in 176 of the 178 episodes of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (1987), 101 of the 176 episodes of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” (1993) Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991), Star Trek: Generations (1994), Star Trek: First Contact (1996), Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) and Star Trek: Nemesis (2002). He also directed the “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” (1993) episodes “In the Cards”, “Inquisition” and “When it Rains…” and the “Enterprise” (2001) episode “Two Days and Two Nights”.

Voice grew deeper, as a result of inflecting a bass tone for his Lt. Cmndr. Worf character.

Developed a mild skin condition for his years of wearing his “Next Generation” make up, for which the departments use a different type for alien effects.

The Klingon proverb his Worf character is fond of:”It is a good day to die!” has been included in the StarCraft computer game dialog when the flying Corsair unit has completed production.

Played a lot of cops in his early career, and got tired of it very quickly.

Once lived in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1970s.

At a science fiction convention, he told the audience that he thinks of Worf as Hamlet.

The part of Worf was a last minute decision and had no written character as such. Dorn was told to ‘create his own’ character and was given the history, being rescued by humans etc. The rest is down to him.

What Follows is a video that I have been made aware of in the past couple of days featuring NLP Hypnot’herapists and Street Hypnotists
Alan Whitton and Nick Davies within which they are discussing the “Current Hypnotic Climate in UK” with particular regards to Stage and
Street Hypnotists.

And now that the resulting video is out in the public domain and has been officially released through You-Tube and The Facebook Profiles
of Alan Whitton & Nick Davies I can now also reveal to you that I was recently visited by these two guys in a most suprising and unexpected manner as illustrated here:

NOw obviously I can’t reveal the next video yet, mainly because I don’t have it and noody will be able to see it until Nick Davies & Alan Whitton
release it to the Hypnotic Industry and world at large and as such I’d advise you to get on over to Facebook and send a Friend request to Nick Davies in Coventry and Alan Whitton in Essex so that as oe of their friends you will then hear of the release of the next video the very moment it occurs.

Of course eventually (when Its released and I see it, as to e honest I don’t 100% recall everything we discussed and I just hope I did not agree to anything that I won’t later regret) I will post the link here on my blog but when that is entirely out of my hands and totally down to Nick Davies and Alan Whitton who have the videos.

All I can say is that they came representing the Street Hypnosis Community and by the time they left, I’d like to think that some kind of mutually agreeable and beneficial to both parties solution was settled upon and put into place to help us all.

So as they say WATCH THIS SPACE or better still get over to Facebook and Join ick Davies of Coventry and Alan Whitton of Essex and whilst your at it why not add me as a friend?

I have two facebook accounts one is my fan page as Jonathan Royle and the other is my proper facebook page in my private birth name of Alex William Smith!

Keep your eyes peeled and see ya soon on facebook!

I’ve been watching the Channel 4 docudrama series, The Queen, that’s been on every night

I’ve been watching the Channel 4 docudrama series, The Queen, that’s been on every night this week and ends tomorrow. Each episode has documented a different key event in Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and she is portrayed by a different actress each night. So far, personally, I think it’s been a bit up and down. I wasn’t overly keen on the first two episodes, about the Queen dealing with the late Princess Margaret’s relationship with divorce Peter Townsend and the turbulent years of the 1970s. I did enjoy last night’s however, about her rivalry (if there was one) with former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The next two epsiodes apparently focus on the Queen’s troubles in 1992 and Prince Charles and Camilla’s wedding in 2005. Though the actresses portraying the queen all do a fine job, I found that the short running length (50 mins) and the talking heads do not allow for any real substance in the programme. It feels, for me, as if the subjects are glossed over and then end. Plus there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of things that weren’t previously known and consequently the series has a feeling of revisiting old ground. I am going to keep watching though, but overall I feel the series is pleasant but not brilliant. Thanks for reading.

Whoever Says the Truth Shall Die (Bregstein, 1981) A nice, concise documentary on the life and artis

Whoever Says the Truth Shall Die (Bregstein, 1981)

A nice, concise documentary on the life and artistry of Pier Paolo Pasolini. The film examines his work, why he was so controversial, the reputation he held, his masochistic tendencies and his still unresolved murder through the eyes of his friends and colleagues. To think that there are still no solid answers outside of how he was killed is pretty disturbing, calling forth some serious questions of conspiracy. It’s nothing spectacularly crafted, nor does it really get too into details, but it paints an interesting enough portrait of a very important artist.

Zombieland (Fleischer, 2009)

Zombieland covers no new ground. It is exactly as it appears, perhaps a bit less memorable than one would hope. It clumsily attempts to balance whimsy in the face of an apocalypse with desperate, strained bits of sentiment regarding an all-too-typical teen love story and each all-too-typical character’s backstory. The film maintains a decent pace, and is never boring, which is about what I expected. The highlights being the rules system and the brilliant Bill Murray cameo. Harrelson’s character becomes an engaging “sacrificial man” toward the end, giving the film some artistic credibility.

Singin’ in the Rain (Kelly/Donen, 1952)

After having ignored this film for so long due to my lack of interest in musicals, I was finally coaxed into watching it for a film rec thread on Rotten Tomatoes. I’m now glad I was. I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Thanks to some genuinely funny dialogue, inspired musical segments, and playful homage and satire, Singin’ in the Rain was a very easy watch. Top praise goes to Kelly’s sidekick in the film, Cosmo, played by Donald O’Connor, for his boyish smile and always amusing performance.
