Search Engine Optimization(SEO):
It is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a website from search engines via natural search results.
The purpose of SEO is to make the site better for both search engines and its users.

Search Engine Marketing(SEM):
It is about making your brand visible within the search engines to attract new visitors to your site. Its everything that can be done to utilize the technology of search engine to promote a website and increase its traffic, its stickiness. That’s why SEO is a subset of SEM.

There are three main steps of SEM in search engine industry:

Natural or Organic Listing: The pages listing results from a search engine query which are displayed in a sequence according to relevance of match between the keyword phrase typed into a search engine and a web page according to a ranking algorithm used by the search engine.

Paid or Sponsored Listing: Sponsored links are paid ads on the results pages of search engines.

Content Network Listing: A content network, such as those at Google, Yahoo! or Microsoft(Bing) Contextual Search, are advertisements served on web pages next to the content containing the keywords being bid on. Content networks are also known as content ads and contextual networks, but are a form of paid inclusion that is more like cost per thousand than cost per click styles of advertisement.

Benefits of SEO:

Targeted traffic
Increase brand visibility
High ROI
Higher sales
Long term positioning
Cost effective
Accessibility
Usability
Cross Browser Compatibility

Jamie Lee Curtis (born November 22, 1958) is an American actress. Although she was initially known as a “scream queen” because of her starring roles in many horror films early in her career such as Halloween, The Fog, Prom Night and Terror Train, Curtis has since compiled a body of work that covers many genres. Her 1998 book, Today I Feel Silly, and Other Moods That Make My Day, made the best-seller list in The New York Times. She is married to actor Christopher Guest (Lord Haden-Guest) and, as the wife of a lord, is titled Lady Haden-Guest, but she chooses not to use the title when in the United States. She is currently the spokeswoman for Activia. She is also a blogger for The Huffington Post online newspaper.

Trivia:

During the 1980s she was engaged to Hollywood production designer J. Michael Riva, the grandson of screen legend Marlene Dietrich. Her godfather was MCA-Universal CEO Lew Wasserman.

Saw her future husband Christopher Guest in the issue of Rolling Stone magazine with Cyndi Lauper on the cover. Guest appeared in a promotional photo for the film This Is Spinal Tap (1984) in full costume and makeup as a rock star. She fell in love at first sight of the photo and gave her telephone number to his agent.

Adopted two children with Christopher Guest: Annie Guest (b. December 1986) and Thomas (b. March 1996).

Daughter of Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh.

Became formally known as Baroness Haden-Guest of Saling in the County of Essex (or, less formally, Lady Haden-Guest), when her husband, Christopher, inherited the barony in 1996 on the death of his father.

Graduated from Choate Rosemary Hall private school in 1976.

It was on her suggestion that Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998) was made.

Her deleted scene from The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984) is included on the MGM Special Edition DVD, 2001, as the “Alternate Opening”.

Was asked to cameo in Scream 3 (2000), but declined.

Won a 2003 Grammy nomination in the Best Spoken Album for Children category for her recording of the children’s books she has written.

Measurements: 34C-22-32 (wardrobe on Forever Young (1992)) (Source: Celebrity Sleuth magazine)

Attended University of the Pacific in Stockton, California.

When making reservations in exclusive London restaurants at short notice, she gives her name as Lady Haden-Guest, which apparently works better than Jamie Lee Curtis.

She told a German magazine that she will retire from making movies and that Christmas with the Kranks (2004) will be her last work as an actress. (November 2004)

Said in an interview on Good Entertainment, with Michael Medved (2001) (TV) that, ironically, horror films terrify her and she prefers not to watch them.

Member of jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 1992

Was one of the guests at Sandra Bullock’s and Jesse James’ wedding.

Godmother of Jake Gyllenhaal.

Two of her earliest roles make reference to roles played by her father. She appeared in the television series “Operation Petticoat” (1977), based on the movie that had starred her father, Tony Curtis. While on hiatus from that show, she was cast in Halloween (1978), in which the detective “Sam Loomis” was named after a character from Psycho (1960), which had starred her mother, Janet Leigh. Also, her father imitated Cary Grant’s voice for his role in Some Like It Hot (1959), and worked with Grant himself in Operation Petticoat (1959). Grant’s birth name, Archie Leach, was used as the name for John Cleese’s character in A Fish Called Wanda (1988).

Once said that Dan Aykroyd was the best on-screen kisser she ever worked with.

John Cleese found it amusing that her father, Tony Curtis’s real name was Bernard Schwartz. To tease her about this, during the production of A Fish Called Wanda (1988), he had the call sheets refer to her as “Jamie Lee Schwartz.”.

Around the time True Lies (1994) was released, Jamie appeared in a series of commercials for L’Eggs Pantyhose. The company also took out an insurance policy for her legs.

Click here to hear me read this poem.

Some things always remain a part of you
Like when you were seven
And shinnied up your first tree
Like some starved Colobus monkey
In search of tenderoni leaves for lunch

Sooner or later, every boy climbs a tree
A rite of passage to manhood
Maybe to see the world from a higher place
Or just because the tree was there
Teasing you silly in the hot mid-morning sun

My first a massive sprawling oak
Jutting out our weedy backyard
Into the red brick alley
Where wood frame garages and steel garbage cans danced
On howling winter nights

I climbed high way up
To the big “y”
Where I perched for nearly five minutes
While my friends below
Proclaimed me a hero

While half the tree remained unexplored territory
I reveled in my accomplishment
Tomorrow was another day
A chance to climb higher
Seeing even more of the world’s vastness

Once the neighbor’s cat, chased by a maniac dog
Darted up the big oak, climbing too far too fast
The fire department was called
To retrieve the terrorized calico
From the high branches

We boys gathered to watch the rescue
Lasting twenty long minutes
Because the cat wouldn’t budge
Till assured its canine assailant was clearly gone
And control of the world returned to the cats

Somehow you just knew
That 1958 would always be
A watershed year in your life
Preparing you for higher climbs
Bigger life adventures ahead

The movie is called “Phir Subah Hogi” (1958) which was a serious movie. Moreover, the actors, singers, music director and lyricist of this movie are also known for creating serious stuff. And most songs of this movie are indeed serious songs.

But here is an out and out light hearted song from this movie. Yes, the movie makers managed to create the situation for a light hearted song in this grim movie.

Raj Kapoor and Rehman are two typical desi guys who think about the girls but are not smart enough to have girl friends. Raj Kapoor finally manages to land one girl (Mala Sinha). And he loses no opportunity to flaunt this achievement, showing her off to the envious Rehman. Remhan, putting up a brave face, is at pains to explain that he too could have a girl friend if he wanted, but he has given up the idea seeing how his friends with girl friends lose their self respect and dignity in front of the girl.

Sahir Ludhianvi has created a very interesting song out of the exchanges of the two friends who are keen to score brownie points over the other. The expressions on the face of Mala Sinha, the reason for this “faceoff” between Raj Kapoor and Rehman, are priceless.

Khayyam is the music director. This song is sung by Rafi (for Rehman) and Mukesh (for Raj Kapoor). I became aware of this song just now. And I count myself lucky that I unearthed yet another gem from the golden era of Bollywood music. Yes, this song is a gem of a song.

There is no place (for us) to live

But the entire world is ours

Our hovel has been snatched away

And the (city) benches too,

Now wandering the streets

Is this life caravan of ours

Our pockets are empty

Therefore they curse us:

That sentry of ours

And that warden of ours

All the existing buildings,

The rich have divided ownerships

The foothpaths of Bombay

Incomplete is our education:

We cannot find work.

Who would know

The depth of the hidden pain of ours?

Feeble is our condition

But our blood is strong.

Of steel is made

Every youth of ours

Together we will adorn

This country in such a way

Judith Merril, editor 1958 I’ve been reading a little slow lately – it’s taken me

Judith Merril, editor
1958

I’ve been reading a little slow lately – it’s taken me about a month to work my way through this anthology. My reactions to it are a bit mixed, though before looking a bit more closely at it, first a very brief history. The SF(‘xx) series edited by Judith Merril was a long-running annual series in which Ms Merril attempted to collect the outstanding SF&F for a particular year. To put things in their proper order, I’ll talk more about this and her when I review the very first tome in this series.

As I said, my reactions were mixed. I normally read anthologies cover to cover, as I imagine the editor always has some sort of structure or theme development in mind when putting the thing together. While I did read the first story first, I thereafter hopped all over the shop in reading. I’m not sure if this affected my reading experience or not.

I felt it was quite an odd bunch of stories - a couple I thought were fantastic, but others were a little strange to my way of thinking. I just want to mention a couple of my favorites before taking a general overview.

The Wonder Horse by George Byram is a fantasy tale about a mutant racehorse that goes on to be unbeatable, the controversy the horse generates and how it’s owners cope with the sudden fame and fortune. A very straightforward story, no real surprises or twists, no startling conclusion, and one that perhaps seemed a little misplaced in an anthology of this nature. To my surprise though, I enjoyed it a lot. A thoroughly engaging and satisfying read.

The other (and perhaps the) stand-out tale for me was Zenna Henderson’s Wilderness. Told with extreme skill and wonderfully paced, it relates the experiences of one young woman – a teacher in a very small and remote South-West town – and the discovery of who she really is. Confused and frightened by her heightened senses, she thinks her sanity to be slowly deteriorating until she meets someone like her and reluctantly accepts her true identity. I’ve since discovered that those of you familiar with the ‘People’ series from Zenna Henderson will no doubt more-or-less know what they are in for here, but for me it was new and unfamiliar. Ms Henderson was a very talented writer and I’m certainly looking forward to reading more of her work; she also appears in both Judith Merril’s first Gnome Press anthology and in SF’57.

The Fly by George Langelaan deserves a mention of course. A tale with which everyone is very familiar now, but nevertheless it was an education to read in it’s original form. This is (I think) it’s first publication in hardcover, although it was earlier published in Playboy magazine in July, 1957.

Another notable inclusion is Near Miss. The last Henry Kuttner story to be published; a tribute to the prolific and very popular author who died that year.

Prefacing each tale is a small introduction by Ms Merril and at the back of the book is a Summary and a section called ‘The Year’s S-F, Summation and Honorable Mentions’ – a kind of an appendix or perhaps a reading list for you. The short introductions add an extra dimension to each tale - Ms Merril gives us the occasional bit of insight into her choices, a little background or info on the author and/or story. They make for interesting reading so here they are reproduced for your appreciation.

Complementing the stories are 6 non-fiction articles that comment on various aspects of science fiction and ’space science’ in general. The most interesting of which is Sputnik: One Reason Why We Lost written by G. Harry Stine.

In all honesty, I struggle to see how this could be collectively considered ‘The Year’s Best’, but Judith Merril is far more experienced than I when it comes to this kind of thing so I take her at her word. Having said that though, the inclusion of that non-fiction really adds an extra dimension to this book and this combined with those two or three exceptional tales make the effort worthwhile.
