It’s a shame to see such a collection of fine cars rot away, anyway here’s the story on how it was discovered by a reader of Jalopnik:

“I have just returned from a vacation somewhere tropical. On the way back form a day excursion I chose an alternate way back to the highway. Ok, I made wrong turn somewhere and rolled with it. This "scenic route" brought us upon what was recorded by these images. It was my wife who first saw them. "Oh look, Mustangs!" I turned my head in time to see a metric shitload of vintage ponies. I immediately turned around and pulled into the driveway. There was a gentleman in the yard who turned out to be the caretaker for the owner of the house/treasure trove. It turns out that the guy who collected all these cars recently succumbed to cancer and his wife wants all these pretty ponies sold en masse for what is by local standards the princely sum of $700 large (I think there plenty of room for negotiation here).”

I first saw Jim Henson’s experimental art film “Time Piece” in 2001, during the first (and only) Muppet convention in Santa Monica. (MuppetFest was awesome, so shut it!)

Started as a personal project, Henson would go on to storyboard, write, direct and star in the film starting in the spring of 1964. It premiered in May 1965 at the Museum of Modern Art, and was even nominated for an Academy Award in the category of “Best Short Subject, Live Action Subjects” in 1966.

Since 2001, I’ve tried to track down the film online. Finally, someone put it on YouTube. Awesome.

So here it is, Jim Henson’s “Time Piece” in all its jazzy glory. You can totally see how it would go on to influence some of the shorts from “Sesame Street” years later.

Be sure to keep an eye out for brief cameos from Frank Oz (with a full head of hair) as a messenger boy, Muppet designer Don Sahlin as a stand-up comic, and head Muppet writer Jerry Juhl as a bartender.

Words can’t describe the beauty of this Dodge Deora built circa 1965 for the Detroit Autorama in the ’60s. Everything from the color to the steering wheel to the car meters wreaks of refinement. The fact that you can only get into the vehicle through the windshield is I find funny.

Revisiting history when on Thursday Morning, April 29, 1965 at 7:28am, a 6.5 magnitude earthquake occured between Seattle and Tacoma. This earthquake was among the largest and most damaging earthquakes of the past 100 years in the Pacific Northwest. The quake was felt over nearly 200,000 square miles covering Washington, much of Oregon, Southwest British Columbia, and the Idaho panhandle.

My Account – The Setting:
I was in 8th grade at East Junior High School in Puyallup, Washington. I had just finished my last lap in a mile run at the track that was located near the east end of the large field east of the school buildings. Exhausted from my run, I huffed over to the bleachers at the edge of the track to sit and catch my breath.

Short Shockwaves:
Just as I was about to relax I heard the loudest noise I had ever heard. It sounded as if a dozen Boeing 707 jet engines were ignited with continuing thunderclaps imbedded in the din. Puyallup is in the Seattle flight line and I feared a jet was crashing near me. I looked around and was suprised to see nothing visible that should cause such a loud roar. Almost simultaneous with the noise, the ground was rapidly and violently shaking. I felt I should flee, but where? I just reasoned that the ground was going to crack open and I would get swallowed into the dirt so I began to run once again.

Medium Shockwaves:
Though still exhausted from the mile run, I was running, this time towards the school for I felt I would be safer there. The field I was on was several acres large, and the school was a long way away. I believed I was running for my life. I could not run straight because I was being buffeted back and forth by the rocking ground. It was a frantic run.

Longer Waves:
Still running, I witnessed the telephone poles rocking back and forth several yards away from me, and I observed waves underneath moving through the field I was on. The power and phone lines were swinging like jumpropes. The field was looking as if it was liquid; as if it was on top a wavy ocean. I could actually see the direction the waves were moving, west to east.

Quake’s End:
Soon I realized that the ground was not going to swallow me up, nor was I going to be called upon to rescue survivors from a catastrophic plane crash and I stopped my run. It was later documented that the quake lasted 45 seconds, but to me it felt as if it shook for minutes. The quake was the only focus of our conversations that day and for some time.

Aftermath:
The quake’s epicenter was near Des Moines, Washington, only 15 miles away. Four people lost their lives in Seattle, and there were a fair amount of injuries as a result of the quake. Damage was estimated at over $12 million.

The first step in my health care reform plan is simply this: recognizing that health care is not a r

The first step in my health care reform plan is simply this: recognizing that health care is not a right.

How can I be so cruel as to say that? How can anyone be so cruel as to say otherwise?

To say that health care is a right means that you have a right to someone else’s labour. Do others have a right to your labour, or is your labour your own, to use it as you see fit?

Communism is a system that holds that some have the right to the labour of others. Communism co-founder, Karl Marx, stated in 1875: “from each according to his ability, to each according to his need.“

I understand the well-meaning intentions of those who say that health care is, and should be, a right. However, a right is an entitlement. How can you be entitled to the work of a doctor, a nurse, or any other health professional, as a matter of birth?

If health care truly was a right, then that was quite the oversight by the Founding Fathers of the United States, in not including it in the Bill of Rights in 1789. But it wasn’t an oversight. They recognized that it wasn’t a right.

The consequence of recognizing that health care is not a right, I believe, is to put the focus back where it properly belongs, as to who is ultimately responsible for their own health — the individual. There are those who are unable to properly care for themselves, as there has been since the dawn of time. Those people should be appropriately cared for, as matter of public interest, not as a matter of right, as well as all others. But just because it’s in the public interest to take care of all individuals, doesn’t make it a right, nor necessitate the method of care.

These days, health care is often taken to mean expensive diagnostic equipment, treatment with expensive drugs, expensive private health care plans with high overhead, and unsustainable government health plans, such as Medicare, which, as I previously documented, cost 744% more by 1990 than previously estimated at its inception, in 1965.

Modern health care has regressed from the basic principles of the father of modern medicine, Hippocrates, who stated: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.“

Instead of a proactive, preventative approach to health by the individual, the focus has regressed to a reactive, expensive third-party approach, and this must change.

Violet is one of my favorite people to knit for. Why? She loves helping me pick out yarn and has the patience to spend hours in The Silver Creek Cabin fiber store, and she actually wears the things I knit for her. In fact, her favorite hat is a crummy stretched out pink cap I knit for her years ago…

I wanted to knit something from my vintage stash of Vogue Knitting magazines. So, I dug out my 1965 issue which focused on knitting for children and knit her a roomy “sweater coat.” It really is huge on her, but she loves it and I hope she wears it for many years to come.

Because this is a vintage pattern the yarn suggested for use is no longer available, so, the fiber I used is from Malabrigo yarns. A chunky fiber, it is 100 percent Merino wool and the color is called “Mariposa.” Since I was knitting this for my butterfly lover, I thought this color choice was perfect! Of course, I had to add a bit of pink for my Pinkalicious little girl. To finish the project, I found the perfect mother of pearl buttons online here.

It was a pretty straightforward and simple pattern; however, I did learn finally to crochet (a simple single chain) for the edges and because the pattern was vintage there was much more shaping, e.g. you actually knit a HEM in this sweater!

Violet really wasn’t up to modeling for me. I had some extra skeins left after the sweater was completed, so I knit her a little matching hat.

When a club represented Brazil

Not many clubs had the chance to play with the Seleção colours, one of those cases was Sport Club Corinthians Paulista in 1965. The adversary on a 16th of November that year were The Gunners, playing in London, at the legendary Highbury Stadium.

The Brazilian team, and Corithians, were not in the best years, altougth Brazil won a second title in 1962, it was time to rebuild the team and they never got to the 1966 World Cup with real chances. Corinthians was in a drougth that lasted until 1977 without titles. Arsenal was not a big team back then, just giving striker Eastham to the English Team that won in 1966.

Corinthians had a problem with the weather uppon arriving in England, they left a sunny 30º São Paulo to arrive in London with -3º, and they had to play in short sleeves, as that was the only option available.

With all those dificulties the Brazilians managed to tie the forst half. Rivellino was a young promess of the club, Edson Cegonha, Dino Sani and Flavio were other notables. At the second half however Sammels scored twice to seal the home owners win.

A few months back Palmeiras had the chance to play in Brazilian clothes, They had a great team and defeated Uruguay with three goals. In 1971 Atlético Mineiro won Yugoslavians by 3 to 2.

When I decide to post a song, most of my time is taken to get the lyrics right. There are some people who inform me that one can get lyrics of the songs on internet. Like most well meaning (and uninformed and unsolicited) advises, this information is not backed by facts.

When you try to search for lyrics, the top results claim that they have the lyrics. But you can keep searching and searching, and after wasting valuable time, one finds that the site did not have the lyrics that they claimed to have.

In case one finds sites where lyrics are available, these lyrics are often incomplete. Moreover, they are often incorrect. Moreover, I have found that most such sites do not bother to get the lyrics for themselves. They all cut and paste from the same source and carry the same incomplete and/ or incorrect lyrics.

And then there are songs for which lyrics are not at all available, for the simple reason that few people are aware of these songs. Many of the songs posted in this blog fall in that categories. In other words, the lyrics of these songs are available for the first time only in this blog.

Here is a song from “Chaand Aur Sooraj” (1965) which not too many people may be aware of. Or perhaps I am speaking from my ignorant point of view. I indeed listened to this song for the first time only just now and spend time getting the lyrics right.

This song is sung beautifully by Rafi and Lata. Shailendra is the lyricist and Salil Chaudhary is the music director. The song is picturised on very young looking Dharmendra and Tanuja. This song is a “Beach” song.

Northern soul fans’ obsession with rarity often comes at the expense of quality. But in Do I Love You both merge into the holy grail of collectors’ soul. Frank Wilson was a Motown producer-songwriter whose solo career was stillborn with this one record, promos of which were melted down. But it’s a glorious, if raw, affirmation of everything the label was about: high-speed drums, delirious chorus and the thrill of love dripping from every pore. One copy of the record sold in 1996 for a reputed £15,000.

Johnnykaje, fellow Globeblogger, started me thinking about something, when she commented on a piece

Johnnykaje, fellow Globeblogger, started me thinking about something, when she commented on a piece by asking a hypothetical: Would it be good or bad, if the Blue Dog Democrats changed parties?

I began thinking about the frustration that many Democrats (not necessarily Johnnykaje) feel over the fact that, despite having rather large majorities in Congress (258 to 177 in the House, 58-40-2 in the Senate) and Barack Obama in the White House, conservatives—whether they call themselves Republicans or Democrats—still seem to be able to block legislation most Democrats want to see passed.

And while I share that frustration, the wrong thing to do would be to force out—through some kind of ideological litmus test—those Democrats who only marginally fit the traditional Democratic profile. That would essentially guarantee conservative victories, so it’s a non-starter, as all the leaders in the Democratic Party realize, but it’s damned tempting.

But part of the Democratic frustration stems from the fact that historically, when Democrats enjoyed strong majorities, great things were done. In 1935, Social Security was passed under Democratic leadership, not just in Congress, but in the person of Franklin Roosevelt. In 1965, Medicare was passed, again under strong Democratic leadership from Congress and Lyndon Johnson.

So, I looked at the composition of those Congresses from those two years, and here’s what I found: The Democratic majority in both houses was not just strong, but unassailable.

Here’s a breakdown, keeping in mind there are 58 Dems in the current Senate and 258 Dems in the current House:

1935 U.S. Senate

Democrats 69 Republicans 25 Other 2

[Missouri: Democrats 2]

1935 U.S. House of Representatives

Democrats 322 Republicans 103 Other 10

[Missouri: Democrats 6 Republicans 1—Yes, it was the 7th District!]

1935 Legislative Highlights

Social Security Act, which included Aid to Dependent Children

National Labor Relations Act, which protected union organization

Rural Electrification Act

_____________________________________________________________

1965 U.S. Senate

Democrats 68 Republicans 32

[Missouri: Democrats 2]

1965 U.S. House of Representatives

Democrats 295 Republicans 140

[Missouri: Democrats 8 Republicans 2—7th District again]

Legislative Highlights

Medicare and Medicaid (Social Security Act of 1965)

Voting Rights Act

Freedom of Information Act

_____________________________________________________________

Interestingly, today’s Missouri delegation—1 Democrat and 1 Republican in the Senate and 4 Democrats and 5 Republicans in the House—is by 1935 and 1965 standards, grossly skewed in favor of the Republicans.

So, when one stops and considers how powerful the Democratic Party was in the eras when Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid were passed, some of us probably expected too much with the relatively small majorities the party has today, and we’re going to have to learn to live with the word “compromise.”

By now you have probably seen the photos of us dragging our handsome brute of a truck home from the woods of Maine. We’ve named the truck Goliath for obvious reasons. The thing is massive. After dragging it home we have not had a lot of time to spend with it so here’s some backstory about the truck, how we got it, and what we plan to do with it.

The truck is a 1965 Chevy C50 (we previously called it a ‘65). It has a GVW of 16,000 pounds. It is equipped with a 292ci straight six, four speed SM420 transmission, and large by huge Eaton rear end. We did some VIN decoding and discovered that the truck was ordered as a cab and chassis. It was built at the Oakland, California General Motors factory.

According to the guy we bought it from, the truck was owned by the phone company for many years and had a boom lift mounted to a flatbed. We’re on board with the phone company stuff but not sure about the lift part as there is no PTO on the truck and we’d think that a PTO would be necessary equipment to run the lift. Who knows, it may have been removed years ago.
