The Black Dahlia
Brian De Palma takes on the James Ellroy novel about the notorious 1947 murder of Elizabeth Short. It should be very good, based on that alone, but I found it very turgid.

The most excellent review site Cinema de Merde rates it, but whilst Scott’s persuasive arguments brought me round to love Body Double, here I’m not so sure.

Jersey Girl
Non-View Askewniverse Kevin Smith, with Ben Affleck as a widowed PR guy forced back to New Jersey by some choice (but impolitic) remarks made about Will Smith whilst under nappy-changing pressure. Very likeable.

All The King’s Men (2006)
Sean Penn as populist Southern Governor who becomes as corrupt as those he sought to replace. Worthy, dull. Jude Law FFS!

Conspiracy
Excellent real-time staging of the 1942 Wannsee Conference which sealed the fate of Europe’s Jews by way of the ‘final solution’. Kenneth Branagh and Stanley Tucci are particularly powerful as Heydrich and Eichmann, though there is not a bad performance from any of the cast.

Atentát
Very economical retelling of the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the architect of the ‘final solution’ and Nazi overlord of Czechoslovakia, directed in 1964 by Jiří Sequens. Couldn’t find subtitles for this (it’s in Czech and German), but it doesn’t matter, you can follow it just the same.

Supernatural war horror flick set aboard an American sub in WW2, courtesy of Riddick dude David Twohy.

Thematically in the realm of The Keep, Deathwatch and The Bunker, and sadly, like the last two, never quite meeting its potential.

The presence of merchant seaman Dexter Fletcher and nurse Olivia Williams – survivors of an earlier torpedoing – hints at rollicking genre fun like The Land That Time Forgot, but mostly it’s a locked room mystery with ghosts.

1968 Tunnel Rats
Dull film about interesting topic: the tunnel complexes used by the NVA/NLF in the Vietnam War. Oh, it’s directed by Uwe Boll. That would explain it.

Star Trek
I am not and never have been a Trek fan (though I’m partial to a bit of Babylon 5) – this was this LLF’s idea. It was much better than I feared, easy enough for a civilian to follow, with the odd LOL moment or two.

Bad movies deserve a little love, or faux love, too. That’s the motivation behind the Razzies, formally known as the Golden Raspberry Awards.

Ceremonies for the dubious honors — honoring the year’s worst achievements in film — were held on Saturday at the Barnsdall Theatre in Hollywood.

The genuinely stinky Mike Myers “comedy” The Love Guru was named worst picture, and the star took home the award for worst actor.

Paris Hilton, who may or may not be as funny as Jerry Lewis, in France, scored other top honors. She was named the year’s worst actress, for The Hottie and the Nottie (to call the movie “execrable” would be redundant), and the worst supporting actress for “slasher musical” Repo: The Genetic Opera. Hilton made it a triple play as part of the worst screen couple (with either Christine Lakin or Joel David Moore), also for The Hottie and the Nottie.

Hello again. Not much really catching my interest tonight, but a few things were worth noting I thought, so here we go.

Spore has been out for over a week now, but complaints have been filing in huge, mostly due to the Digital Rights Management mechanisms that EA decided to implement on the discs. The DRM limits players to just three downloads of the game before the game won’t let it be loaded onto any more computers. This system made a fiasco at Amazon.com, where the game started getting 1 star ratings due solely to DRM. Well, EA has finally decided to address at least one DRM complaint in the near future, and allow people to uninstall the game from a computer to give them one of the three downloads back.

While this is nice, I still can’t understand why EA sticks by DRM. It makes it feel like a player is renting the game instead of actually buying it, as their servers have to be activated to be allowed to play. In fact, an illegal download of the game actually works better, as the DRM is removed from the game that way. Currently, Spore has been the most illegally download PC game due to this fact alone. I plan on possibly doing a more in-depth story on this later, but here’s hoping that EA starts to realize their mistake with DRM and put patches in to get rid of it.

In other gaming news, Uwe Boll, more famously known for his movies based on video game, is finally taking the next step and making a video game. His movie career has not been in a positive light, though, as one look at Rotten Tomatoes shows that he has a 0% rating, with his video game movie Alone in the Dark having only a 1% rating. His movie career actually has a petition out against it right now to try and stop him from making more video game based movies.

His new game, called 1968 Tunnel Rats, actually doesn’t look that bad visually. It actually reminds me of Farcry, which tried to be more realistic. The gameplay, though, looks bland. If the game is halfway decent to play when the game comes out, I’ll be surprised. Of course, now all we have to do is wait for him to make another bad movie based off of his own game.
