“Zindagi Aur Toofaan” (1975) was a movie which had Sajid Khan,Yogita Bali, Helen etc playing important roles in it. This movie was an “art” movie as low budget movies were then called. It was based on a Hindi novel by a noted Hindi author. On you tube, someone mentioned this novel as “Meri Kashti” by Mahaveer Adhikari, though I cannot vouch for the authenticity of this information.

The movie, sans big names, expectedly flopped at the box office.

But this movie had a song that was a surprise hit. This song was “zindagi aur bataa teraa iraadaa kyaa hai”.
This song is sung by Mukesh and it is picturised on a very young Sajid Khan (who is now a days a TV anchor). The lyricist of this song is Dr Ramnath Avasthi,as mentioned by someone on youtube, though other sources describe the lyricist as Ramavtar Tyaagi.

Laxmikant Pyarelal composed the music, or is it Brij Bhushan ? There is much confusion about the lyricist and music director of this movie.

Hello Good People who surprise me by still reading this blog during my long absences.

This post was originally half written over four weeks ago and was never finished, I was interrupted by the ‘flu,the Cultural Revolution and Revolutionary Operas and then had to recover from the exhaustion of all three!

Anyway, I am now myself again and am greatly excited at the prospect of seeing the Steve Hillage Band and Gong live at The Forum in London, this Friday (on the 27/11/2009 in case you read this at some point in the future).

Talking about some point in the future, before the Cultural Revolution, or sleeping or reading about East Asian pop music compulsively once  again, I will get straight to the point and illustrate Gong’s new album entitled 2032 with a short clip. I have to admit that I think this music video is amazing. It was made by the Japanese animator team Mu-0C Magic , who I believe are Hibari Hoya,Haruka Sakota, and Akira Watanabe.

Is the album entitled 2032 because an asteroid is due to hit Earth in that year?

Answers in the comments section please, the song is certainly cheerfully apocalyptic. But then the first ever song by Gong that hit me lyrically in the centre of my brain was You Can’t Kill Me, a song about killing off the rest of the family, symbolic and  psychologically strange.

The tracks on the new album 2032 sound definitely like the old Gong, although on occasion I can hear a bit of old Hawkwind and The Ozric Tentacles too. However considering that without both Hawkwind and Gong , there wouldn’t be any Ozric Tentacles ..I’ll let you do the maths…

Here is Pinkle Ponkle from the new Gong album, starting off sounding a bit techno, then a bit middle-Eastern but then definitely just like Gong’s unique style with echo unit orgasmic sighs by Gilli Smyth , Daevid Allen’s poetry, psychedelic spacy effects by Miquette Giraudy, Steve Hillage’s uniquely wonderful  guitar sound ,with Mike Howlett on bass,Chris Taylor on drums and Theo Travis on flute and sax.

Gong and Steve Hillage surreptitiously introduced me to Gamelan, free form jazz , Middle-Eastern and Indian classical music and musical concepts like drones on Miquette’s synth,and modes from the East on Steve’s guitar, when I was only fourteen and “World Music” was not generally heard in London’s mainstream media, apart from a bit of Indian Classical music.

In recent years of course, Steve Hillage has been creating music with Miquette as System7, but even with dance/trance/techno music he was still playing his guitar live.

Now with the reemergence of The Steve Hillage Band , he is playing his old stuff again, something many of us had wished and prayed for during the past two and a half decades and never dared to hope would come true.

I will end with some video clips as it’s late and I need to go to bed! One last piece of info, I phoned up a ticket agency today ( Keith Prowse) and there are still tickets available for this Friday (tomorrow) at the Forum in Kentish Town…

but only because every Steve Hillage fan in London does not realise he is playing yet. If you are one of them, get yourself a ticket by whatever means , it’s not too late. Or you could go and see The Steve Hillage Band and Gong , on Saturday the 28th at The O2 Academy in Oxford,  and Sunday the 29th of  November at The Corn Exchange in Brighton.

Ännu en låt jag plockat från den mängd höjdarlåtar som spelas på webbradion Funk365. Det hela är producerat av Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, men tyvärr så verkade inte det hjälpa Raja Nees karriär nämnvärt då hon bara släppt ett album där den här låten ingår bland annat. Sen bidde det inget mer, varför har jag inte en aning om, men det kan ju bero på att konkurrensen på marknaden vad gäller kvinnliga hip-hop och R&B-artister var tämligen brutal i mitten på 90-talet.

Annars så andas den här låten väldigt mycket samma känsla som Naughty By Natures Hip Hop Hooray som kom ett par år tidigare. Medan Naughty By Nature nöjde sig med att sampla lite trummor till sin låt så samplade herrarna Jam & Lewis desto friskare till den här skapelsen.

Ja, eftersom det var bröderna Isley som det samplades ifrån så står även bröderna Isley med som låtskrivare på Raja Nees Turn It Up. Så de bör ju ha fått in en och annan cent i royalty utan att behöva göra speciellt mycket mer än att låta recycla en av sina gamla låtar från 1975.

Själv så föredrar jag då Raja Nees låt som ger mig så mycket av den där 90-talskänslan som man trodde man hade glömt bort. Men jag inser att jag mer och mer börjar intressera mig för det decennium då mycket musik flög förbi utan att jag registrerade vad det var för nåt utan bara diggade för stunden. Har ju t.ex återupptäckt tjejtrion SWV som spelades friskt på radio och klubbar i Sthlm under de åren jag bodde där.

I bought some DVD’s the other day. One of them was the 1979 movie All That Jazz, directed by Bob Fosse (Sweet Charity, Cabaret, Lenny). The movie is Fosse’s semi-autobiographical story about a director/choreographer/dancer’s life and career. The film was inspired by a period from Fosse’s life, when he tried to edit his film “Lenny” while staging his 1975 Broadway musical “Chicago”. It’s the story of Joe Gideon, a chain-smoking, workaholic choreographer and theater director who sleeps with all of his dancers. He wakes up everyday with Vivaldi blasting through his cassette player. He has his daily dose of Visine, Alka-Seltzer and Dexedrine and heads to work. His lavish lifestyle is taking him to an early grave, and even though his daughter and ex-wife try to pull him back from the brink, it seems to be too late. Gideon is already flirting with the angel of death, played by Jessica Lange. His condition gets worse and is admitted to a hospital with a severe case of angina. Gideon is bedridden, but it doesn’t stop the cigarettes, women or champagne from flowing. Gideon is playing with death until a massive coronary stops everything. The backers for the broadway play that Gideon is directing have to decide what to do with the production. They realize that the only way they could make a profit with the play is if Gideon were to die and they could cash the million dollar insurance.

The screenplay by Robert Alan Aurthur and Fosse is a semi-autobiographical fantasy based on aspects of the dancer, choreographer, and director's life and career. The film was inspired by Fosse's manic effort to edit his film Lenny while simultaneously staging his 1975 Broadway musical Chicago.

I love musicals. That didn’t sound right… I like musicals that are good. Some are not, and I don’t like them at all. My wife thinks I’m completely gay for watching musicals. I think it’s a genre like any other, and a movie isn’t judged buy its genre, but whether it is good or not. All That Jazz featured an amazing performance from Roy Scheider, great dance scenes, cool 70’s camerawork and… –Well, I can’t think of anything at the moment, but overall a great movie. My rating is a solid 3 out of 5 stars. Maybe even 4 stars. Two thumbs up, if that’s any easier to interpret. Let’s call it 7/10 points and a must see for anyone who likes Roy Scheider or musicals.

I would like, if I may, to take you on a strange journey.

The cult classic musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show has been entrenched in American culture since it bombed at the box office in 1975. I always wanted to go to the midnight showings of this movie, but I didn’t want to feel like a noob going there. I am familiar with the music seeing that I have the soundtrack to the 2001 Broadway revival. I get a kick out of going back into a time warp to visit Dr. Frank-N-Furter and his cretins of the night.

Nostalgia floods back when the first thing you see is those flame red lips singing the opening number about this tale of an uptight couple; Brad Majors (Barry Bostwick) and Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon) getting stranded one fateful night in a rainstorm. The Criminologist (Charles Gray) that recalls the events of that night narrates the tale.

They arrive at the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry) with his band of misfits, abused manservant Riff-Raff (Richard O’Brien), maid Magenta (Patricia Quinn) and groupie Columbia (Little Nell). Brad wants to use the telephone to get the car fixed, but the Doctor has other plans for the twosome.

He wants them to witness the birth of his perfect companion, Rocky Horror (Peter Hinwood). As the night progress, the Transylvanians’ influence corrupts the good couple.

Everybody knows that the acting is not good bordering on soap opera melodrama. The music is spastic like the cast sucked helium before recording the soundtrack. Is it bad or is it so bad that it’s good?

Judgment: There is something enjoyable about this trainwreck of a movie.

Milos Forman’s One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest is based on Ken Kesey’s novel by the same title. It was the first film ever to receive all five most sought after Academy Awards for best picture, best director, best screenplay, best leading actor and best leading actress in that year. McMurphy (played by Jack Nicholson) is a prisoner who is sent from the work farm to an asylum to determine whether his rebelliousness is attributable to insanity. He starts a quiet revolution amongst some of the asylum’s inmates. He makes a bet to taunt and bring down head Nurse Mildred Ratched (Louise Fletcher) who rules the ward with an iron fist. At first it is all fun and games, but it ultimately takes a turn for the worst.

The film takes one on a roller coaster of emotions, from laughing out loud to worrying empathy, from becoming enraged to shedding some tears. McMurphy might be a convicted felon, but his charismatic personality quickly wins over the audience as well as the inmates. Even though he does many irresponsible and questionable things, he reveals attributes which are quite endearing. One finds oneself rooting for him when he breaks the rules. He breaks the rigid and oppressive monotony of the inmates’ lives and becomes the object of their entertainment and amusement. But as in all dictatorships, this is short-lived.

Louise Fletcher gives a wonderful performance as the head nurse, who is very clinical, cold, unbending, rational and disconcertingly calm – quite the antithesis of McMurphy. It is quite disturbing how patients are subdued through medication and treatment methods such as shock therapy. The film gives a voice to those who are oppressed through any system or establishment of power.

The author of the novel, Ken Kesey, reportedly did not want to watch the film seeing that his novel is told through the eyes of Chief Bromden, while the film is told through McMurphy’s eyes. It would indeed have been quite a different film if the movie had been closer to Kesey’s book. I have not read the book yet, and, therefore, cannot say whether I would have preferred one or the other and why. But what I can concede, is that the film is poignant exactly for the fact that Murphy is the protagonist; it shows just how powerful tyranny can be in destroying the mightiest spirits.

SPOILER WARNING! The word “cuckoo” is slang for a crazy or foolish person. But its main meaning is that of a bird who lays its eggs in the nests of other species. This might refer to McMurphy who laid an egg of revolution in the asylum, which hatch out in the form of Chief Bromden breaking out of the asylum after he has been subjugated to the staff’s will. The Wikipedia contends that

…the origin of the title is often disputed, however, it is believed to come from a poem by Louis Untermeyer called “Rainbow in the Sky.”

“Wire, briar, limber-lock
Three gees in a flock
One flew east, one flew west
And one flew over the cuckoo’s nest.”

The “one [that] flew east” is McMurphy, and the “one [that] flew west” is Nurse Ratched, illustrating their opposite directions and rivalry. “And one flew over the cuckoo’s nest” describes Chief who was able to escape the institute of mentally ill patients. It loses the significance it had in the novel, in which the line is a part of a rhyme Chief Bromden remembers from his childhood. This detail was not included in the film.

Puritan Nurse Ratched very sadistically vows to tell Billy’s mother of his wild night with one of McMurphy’s girlfriends. There does not seem to be as much rehabilitation as oppression and suppression in the mental hospital. Chief suffocates McMurphy in the end; it is a mercy killing to rescue him from the vegetable-like state the mental hospital has put him in. SPOILERS END HERE.

Um dos melhores filmes de um dos diretores mais famosos e mais queridos de todos os tempos.

Tubarão, pra começar tudo é o filme mais “toma na cara e vira macho” de Spielberg, talvez o único. Mesmo com toda a questão da família e tudo mais, aqui o velhinho simpático não nos obriga a chorar ou ficar tristes ou receosos, ele apenas faz o filme pela gratificação de fazê-lo, nada mais.

A história é bem simples e brusca, se pegarmos que depois dos créditos iniciais vemos uma moça morrer puxada pra baixo da água por alguma “coisa” enquanto um bêbado na encosta, que não sabe nem se está na praia ou em Las Vegas, não a escuta. Depois descobrimos pelos restos destroçados da moça que ela foi atacada por um tubarão dos mais enormes. Daí começa toda a bagaça.

O chefe de policia tem que tomar uma providência quanto a isso certo? Então decide fechar a praia, nada mais lógico. Mas o interessante é ver que o capitalismo decorrente do nosso mundo esta presente ali criticado pelos realizadores da película. Eles jogam como Raimi jogou recentemente em Drag me to hell toda a culpa dos acontecimentos seguintes na ambição exagerada dos personagens em querer mais grana. O prefeito rejeita o pedido do chefe de policia e não deixe que este feche a praia. Até porque, a cidade é uma cidade turística de verão que ganha dinheiro com os turistas que vão pra lá no verão. E fechar a praia é uma loucura mesmo, é melhor algumas pessoas morrerem comidas por um animal enorme do que a cidade perder um ano de dinheiro.

Spilba (vou chamá-lo assim ta, porque só o chamo assim) cria um dos maiores climões de suspense do cinema aqui, e tudo com um grande “nada” aparecendo nas cenas e amedrontando qualquer um. Sim, um nada. O nosso tubarão só vai aparecer realmente lá pra parte final do filme (final mesmo). Fora isso, Spilba cria uma atmosfera de medo e pânico poucas vezes alcançada depois disso. Na época as pessoas ficaram com medo de ir a praias por causa do filme.

Os atores estão arregaçando tudo e é legal comentar um momento de qual não me lembrava (ou talvez a sessão da tarde tenha cortado) no qual, o nosso chefe de policia querido está acabado diante da mesa do jantar e o clima é pesado de mais e nós sentimos toda a culpa que ele sente (afinal, foi esbofeteado na frente de quase toda a cidade por uma mãe que perdeu o filho mesmo com o chefe sabendo). E mesmo assim, mesmo nesse momento cru e triste, o filho mais novo do chefe o imita, sim cada gesto, o que torna a cena ainda mais clássica e honesta. O jovenzinho é todo o símbolo de que Spilba sempre buscou em seu cinema: família. Sim, e apenas com gestos imitando seu pai o jovenzinho consegue transmitir tanto que nem eu aguentei ver a cena toda sem parar um pouco. Carga dramática e humorada ao mesmo tempo transcendendo o normal em um dos primeiros filmes do cara foi foda.

A cenas eternas de mais, desde a primeira morte, passando pelos ataques do tubarão, pela apresentação do Quint, vindo pelas cenas de aventura no barco até chegar na morte clássica e eterna do tubarão com um tremendo “smile, you sun of…”(“sorria, seu filho da…”), seguido da explosão do protagonista.

É folks, o protagonista é o tubarão, querendo ou não.

Mas o filme é tudo o que todos os fãs dizem mesmo, e eu sou um deles, portanto, vão e vejam se é que ainda há alguém vivo que nõ tenha visto. A única coisa ruim foi não ver com a dublagem clássica da sessão da tarde. Se tivesse ela no dvd eu nem fazia questão de ver legendado, sério, traria uma nostalgia da porra. Mas como foi redublado para quem não curte ver legendado e é besta por isso, no dvd não tem mais a versão da sessão da tarde.

Filme foda, um dos melhores do Spilba junto com Jurassic Park e Indiana Jones, e que tem um dos enredos mais fantásticos que já vi. Comentar também sobre a trilha sacana de John Wlliams que com apenas duas notas crescentes faz meu coração vibrar de tensão até hoje. Pois é, da fotografia aos enquadramentos inteligentes e surpreendentes (me espanto com algumas angulações que Spilba filmou no barco) à trilha sonora o filme se dá bem em tudo, inclusive no fazer divertir e ter medo, que é seu maior objetivo, ainda mais sendo o primeiro grande blockbuster que os EUA já viram em seu verão.

Ninguém sabe dizer muito sobre ele! Pesquisando pelos blogs da vida descobri que é Pernambucano e que ainda está na ativa como Roberto Melo.
Esse disco de 1975 (único lançado em sua carreira até onde consta) é um dos melhores que tenho de música brasileira, se não for O melhor!
Fiquei sabendo que em 2004 a EMI da Europa relançou este vinyl em CD… realmente os gringos conhecem mais de música brasileira do que nós. Por aqui esse relançamento eu nunca vi!!! Aliás, me parece que foram os garimpeiros de vinyl que acharam e começaram a tocar nos bailes, popularizando o indivíduo.
Letras sensacionais, banda excelente! Participação de Hermeto Pascoal e Heraldo do Monte em “A Vida em Seus Métodos Diz Calma”.
Esse é pra quem gosta de samba-soul! E as letras grudam como carrapato! Avisei!

Replacing the RS 1600 and using a bored-out BDA engine, the RS 1800 was built along with the MkII RS2000 and Mexico at Saarlouis. It shared the same two-door reinforced bodyshell as the 2000, stronger suspension and a hefty front cross-member. A deep front air-dam, 5 ½ inch sports road wheels and a soft boot-lid spoiler set it apart from the Sport and derivatives. Ford’s most successful rally car, the RS1800 won more rallies than any other British car.
