Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is a 1986 motion picture released by Paramount Studios. It is the fourth feature film based on the Star Trek science fiction television series. It completes the story begun in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and continued in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Intent on returning home to Earth to face trial for their crimes, the former crew of the USS Enterprise travels to Earth’s past in order to save their present from a probe attempting to communicate with long-dead humpback whales.

After directing The Search for Spock, cast member Leonard Nimoy was asked to direct the next feature, and given greater freedom to the film’s content. Nimoy and producer Harve Bennett conceived a story with an environmental message. After dissatisfaction with the first script produced by Steeve Meerson and Peter Krikes, Paramount hired The Wrath of Khan writer and director Nicholas Meyer, who collaborated with Bennett to rewrite the script.

James Horner, the composer for the previous two films, declined to return; Nimoy’s friend Leonard Rosenman was given the job instead.

The film earned four Academy Award nominations, for Best Cinematography, Best Effects, Best Music and Best Sound.

Trivia:

The device Dr. McCoy uses to heal Chekov’s head injury is part of a model kit of an AMT movie version Klingon Battlecruiser.

The punk on the bus is played by associate producer Kirk R. Thatcher. He also wrote the song that is playing on the boom box during his scene.

Some shots of the whales were in fact four foot long animatronics models. Four models were created, and were so realistic that after release of the film, US fishing authorities publicly criticized the film makers for getting too close to whales in the wild. The scenes involving these whales were shot in a pool underneath a Paramount parking lot. The shot of the whales swimming past the Golden Gate Bridge were filmed on location, and nearly ended in disaster when a cable got snagged on a nuclear submarine and the whales were towed out to sea.

The film was originally supposed to have Eddie Murphy instead of Catherine Hicks. Murphy was supposed to have played a professor concerned with UFO’s who spots the de-cloaking Klingon ship at the Super Bowl. Apparently, all others are convinced the ship is a half-time special effect while Murphy believes it is real. Paramount declined this script for two reasons: Paramount didn’t want to combine their two most profitable franchises (“Star Trek” (1966) and Beverly Hills Cop (1984)), and Murphy had signed on to do The Golden Child (1986) instead.

According to George Takei, when McCoy, Scotty and Sulu are standing in front of the building with Yellow Pages advertisement, a door opens and an Asian woman appears. The scene in the movie ends at this point but originally this woman was to begin shouting for a young boy named Hikaru, who would run into Sulu. Sulu would realize that this boy was his great-great-(etc.) grandfather. The young boy hired for this scene began to cry on the set before the shot and they were unable to get him to do the scene. With no one to replace him, the scene was never shot.

Sulu (George Takei) was supposed to leap into the Huey helicopter when the pilot was outside, looking the other way, and make off with it. Takei had just run the San Francisco marathon when they were supposed to shoot this scene, and was too sore to leap into the helicopter. They tried having a grip throw him in, but couldn’t get it to look realistic, so the scene was cut. In the final edit, Sulu is shown talking to the pilot, then shows up flying the helicopter a few minutes later.

Cameo: [Bob Sarlatte] The waiter in the restaurant.

The Cetacean Institute is actually the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, California. The Institute’s logo also belongs to the Aquarium.

When Kirk, McCoy, and Gillian first enter the hospital and are walking around trying to locate Chekov, a voice on a loudspeaker in the background says “Paging Dr. Zober… Dr. Sandy Zober.” Sandra Zober was director/star Leonard Nimoy’s wife at the time.

The officer on the Saratoga who announces that the thruster controls are offline is of the same alien race as the Federation President in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991). This race has never been officially named, but some promotional materials identify the race as the Efrosians (named after Mel Efros, unit production manager for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)).

During Spock’s memory tests, the computer speaks very rapidly, almost too rapidly to discern. The first question it asks Spock is, “Who said ‘Logic is the cement of our civilization, with which we ascend from chaos, using reason as our guide’?”

The time-travel method used in the film comes from the “Star Trek” (1966) episode ‘Tomorrow is Yesterday’.

A scene written for but cut from the film explained why Saavik stays on Vulcan: she is pregnant with Spock’s child, stemming from an event in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984). This was the character’s final appearance in a Star Trek film.

Jane Wyatt’s final cinematic appearance.

The computer graphic consoles that became standard on the 24th century Star Trek bridges and also called “Okudagrams” (named for designer Michael Okuda), make their first appearance on the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-A. It is also the final appearance of the entire original Star Trek movie bridge set as only small parts were reused for Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989).

Scenes of the Enterprise’s final moments and its self-destruct were reused from Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984).

During the film’s 1 hour 59 minute runtime, there’s only a total of about 1 minute 13 seconds worth of shots of the Enterprise – the shortest amount of time the Enterprise is seen on screen in any Star Trek movie. The first 33 seconds of it during the beginning courtroom scene was stock footage of the Enterprise’s destruction from Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984). The other 40 seconds of it were shots of the Enterprise-A towards the end.

One early draft script was subtitled ‘The Trial of James T. Kirk’. This script involved Kirk being ‘court-martial’ed at the request of the Klingons, who were indignant about the events in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984). One particularly interesting facet of this script is that it included the character of Harry Mudd (Roger C. Carmel)as a character witness. When the time-travel script was approved instead, the trial was included as a minor sequence. The trial-by-Klingons idea (and portions of the dialogue) was later re-used in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991).

Cameo: [Jane Wiedlin] The Go-Go’s rhythm guitarist appears as the captain of a ship rendered powerless by the Probe. She is seen on the right of three huge video screens amid a chaotic control room on Earth. Her line: ‘The condition remains the same. The Probe has neutralized all power supplies. We are functioning on reserves only’.

The captain of the USS Saratoga, seen at the start of the film, was the first female captain ever seen in a Star Trek story. The success of this film led to offers by several US TV networks to produce a new Trek TV series with the original cast. Instead, Paramount gave the green light to produce the syndicated “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (1987) starring an all new cast. A woman (Kate Mulgrew) was cast as ship’s captain in the Star Trek series Star Trek series ‘Star Trek: Voyager (1995)’.

The miniature of the Spacedock interior (some fifteen feet across) had been destroyed at the end of production on the previous film and had to be rebuilt from scratch.

As part of a deal with reincarnating Spock in the previous film, Leonard Nimoy took the director’s chair.

When Chekov is running through the Enterprise (the aircraft carrier), trying to get away from the Marines, the words “Escape Route” and an arrow can be seen on the bulkhead walls.

The ‘USS Enterprise CVN-65′ was actually The USS Ranger CV-61. The Enterprise was out to sea during filming.

According to Spock’s computer on Vulcan, Kiri-Kin-Tha’s First Law of Metaphysics states that “Nothing unreal exists”.

Kirk R. Thatcher did such extensive work on the film that he was promoted from “Production Assistant/Visual Effects” to “Associate Producer” by the end of the film.

Scenes filmed on location in San Francisco marked the first time any Star Trek installment had been filmed outside the Los Angeles region.

When Nicholas Meyer was asked to help with the script, the first thing he wanted to do was change the location from San Francisco to Paris because he had previously written and directed a movie about time travel involving San Francisco called Time After Time (1979). But since Starfleet is supposed to be located in San Francisco, he was overruled. Oddly enough, scenes in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991), as well as scenes from “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” (1993) depict the Office of the Federation President to be in Paris.

The scene with the punk music on the bus was written by Nicholas Meyer to revive a scene that was cut from his movie Time After Time (1979), that had H.G. Wells encountering a teenager with music blaring from a boom box.

The scene with Chekov and Uhura kneeling on rocks looking at the Aircraft Carriers was shot in San Diego at North Island Naval Air Station.

It is often claimed that this is the only Star Trek film where no weapons are fired. This is incorrect, as Kirk uses his phaser to weld a door shut, and the whaler fires its harpoon. Chekov also tries to use his phaser, though it doesn’t work. It is also one which no cast member from this film is killed, as the only deaths were from the reused footage from Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984).

The whale hunters speak Finnish. The older Finnish hunter says “What the hell was it, that hit the harpoon?”

The film bore the dedication, “The cast and crew of Star Trek wish to dedicate this film to the men and women of the spaceship Challenger whose courageous spirit shall live to the 23rd century and beyond…”

The computer that Scotty uses to show transparent aluminum was originally going to be an Amiga, but Commodore would only provide a computer if they bought it. Apple was willing to loan them the Mac.

When the alien ship is approaching Earth at the beginning to look for the humpback whales, there were originally subtitles saying things like “Where are you? Can you hear us?”. The studio wanted to keep them despite Leonard Nimoy’s objections. In the first test screening, however, test audiences indicated the subtitles were unnecessary so they were cut.

For the shot of Sulu flying the helicopter over San Francisco bay, the filmmakers tried to get a pilot to fly a Huey, but they were unable to. The long shot was accomplished using a radio controlled model from Japan.

The Probe is modelled after Rama from Arthur C. Clarke’s “Rendezvous with Rama”.

While attempting to escape from the security agents aboard the USS Enterprise, Chekov tosses his phaser to one of the agents; although it is representative of twenty-third century technology, it is never retrieved.

After Leonard Nimoy allowed Kirk R. Thatcher to play the punk on the bus, Thatcher expressed displeasure at the music chosen for his boom box on the bus scene. He then asked to write and perform a song that he felt would be more representative of his character than the pre-selected music that was to appear. The result was the song “I Hate You”.

The original script called for the whales to be intercepted during aerial transport over the Golden Gate Bridge. San Francisco Mayor Diane Feinstein objected, saying that the city already had enough trouble with jumpers on the bridge, and that the scene would only encourage more. This led to the scene showing capture of the whales in Alaska.

One of the questions Spock is asked by the Computer on Vulcan asks about the major historical events of 1987. We never see or hear the answer to that question as the film was made in 1986.

The sounds of static from the computers heard in the background when the Bird of Prey comes out of timewarp are the loading sounds of a Sinclair ZX Spectrum computer.

The location where Dr. Gillian Taylor picks up Kirk and Spock is not an actual street. It’s a parking lot that runs alongside the main road.

In order to find the best actress to play Dr. Gillian Taylor, two prospective actresses were brought out to William Shatner’s ranch by Leonard Nimoy to meet with the man himself. It was Shatner who personally chose Catherine Hicks saying that she was “spunky” (According to Shatner and Nimoy in the DVD Commentary).

The idea of having Spock give the Vulcan nerve pinch to the punk rocker was inspired by Leonard Nimoy who was walking down the street in New York when a punk came out of a store with his boombox blaring, disturbing everyone around him. Annoyed, Nimoy thought “If I was REALLY Spock, I’d pinch his head off!” (According to Nimoy in the DVD Commentary).

This film features the only instance in which Kirk says “Scotty, Beam me up”

During the final scene of the movie, where the Enterprise crew is in the shuttle Sulu says “with all due respect I hope we get Excelsior”. In Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991), Sulu is the Captain of the Excelsior.

The scene where Chekov and Uhura are asking a woman about “nuclear wessels” was almost completely improvised. Her line about them being in Alameda was ad-libbed by her, and although she wasn’t supposed to say very much, Leonard Nimoy enjoyed the spontaneity of the scene so much he left it the way it was.

The sound the probe makes is taken from the sound of baby’s heartbeat during a sonogram, slowed down and digitalized.

Final cinema film of Robert Ellenstein.

The antique glasses that Kirk sells to make some cash are the pair that was given to him by McCoy for his birthday in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (1982). It’s suggested that once sold in the antiques store, those glasses hang around until they’re bought by McCoy, in the future, and then Kirk takes them back in time, and so on, in which case one has to wonder where the glasses “originally” came from. This constitutes an “ontological paradox”, an old favorite of science fiction writers, and raises too many questions to discuss here. (It is possible that these glasses existed in two places simultaneously, like characters in the “Back to the Future” films, rather than being caught in a causal loop.) The same paradox arises when Scotty explains how to make transparent aluminum. If the formula is “found” for the first time in the 20th century, but only because Scotty took the information back, then it was never invented in the first place! (This may not be a paradox if Scotty only gave Doctor Nichols the chemical formula but not the manufacturing process.)

Scotty provided the formula for transparent aluminum in this movie. Interestingly, this state of matter was discovered in 2009.

According to Leonard Nimoy, about 95% of the Humpback Whale footage in the final cut of the film was man-made.

Susan Sarandon was among performers that were considered for the main guest lead of Dr.Gillian Taylor.

Plot: Lucas is a promising kid, bright, inquisitive, knowledgeable, industrious, but for a boy aged 14 those qualities don’t count for much socially, his daily life in high school is a brave but hopeless struggle against cruel ridicule (nicknamed ‘leukoplakia’) and abuse on account of his frail figure, ‘miniature’ size and athletic ineptitude, while any demonstration of precocious erudition is frowned upon by his ignorant, dumber peers and seniors, fortunately with one remarkable exception: the studly football team captain, generally known as Cappie, gallantly protects the ’shrimp’ and as soon as he gets to know Lucas appreciates his mind and courage, eager to learn from him. The arrival of an attractive new girl in his school and neighborhood proves a mixed blessing: Maggie becomes his best friend and companion, admiring his many talents, but inevitably she soon falls for Cappie the other way, so now his ‘big brother’ and protector seems little Lucas’s rival, however hard the hunk tries to stay friends…

Do you like these names for male and female doctors?
Lucas "Luke" Garretty – Surgical Attending – 31 years old
Sean Brighton – Intensivist – 35 years old
Robert "Rob" Stevens – Oncologist – 39 years old
Hugh Fitzgerald – Head of Surgical Department – 49 years old
Eleanor Grayson – Charge Nurse – 55 years old
Samantha "Sam" Burkholt – Med. Student – 24 years old

Do these names sound like they would belong to doctors, more specifically in their position at the hospital? Which name is your favorite? Which name is your least favorite? If you have any other suggestions on what I should name one of them, or even all of them, please tell me your suggestion.

Thanks! Much appreciated!

I like most of the names, I don’t like the spelling of Sean, I really think you should use Shawn instead, many older people think that it is pronounced Seen and I can’t blame them, the spelling is weird. I’m not overly fond of the female names, especially Eleanor, maybe you could keep Eleanor but just use the nickname of Elle, which is much nicer. Samantha is nice but I prefer to use Samantha and not Sam.

My favorite name is Luke, it sounds smart and mature.
My least favorite is Eleanor, I would use Elle as a nickname if I were you.

 Robyn H | Nov 22, 2009

 yes they’re nice.

my favorite:
sean brighton

i don’t really have a least but if i had to choose i’d say lucas for i don’t like that name… the last name is fine though
Katie | Nov 22, 2009

Yes they work perfectly. My favorite guy name would be Luke and my favorite girl would be Sam. If I had to pick worst in my opinion, then Hugh. I just dont like that name. lol, but they work great. HOPE THIS HELPS!
Alex | Nov 22, 2009

 Yes I like them.

My favorite is Lucas Garretty or Sean Brighton.

My least favorite is Robert Stevens. The last name just wasn’t coming together for me. But it’s not horrible, and that’s only my opinion.

Great names, and good luck
Every night, Candela is compelled to arise from her bed and dance with the ghost of Jose. Candela eventually marries Carmelo, who has loved her since they were children, but she is not yet free of her dead husband.

There has been a huge media frenzy in UK about the Thierry Henry’s ‘Hand Of God’ during Ireland vs France World Cup 2010 play-off on November 18th and it’s aftermath: since France won a ticket to South Africa with 1-1, thanks to Henry’s ‘cheating’ act. UK media with “strong sense of mission to pursue justice” have been putting up big articles about this incident, not only in sports sections but also in general sections, everyday since then. You can see clearly that it was handball, but the referee missed to see this crucial foul or chance to correct the mistake. Irish Football Association (IFA) demanded a rematch, but FIFA and the French Football Federation (FFF) said ‘NO’ – but it is all expected. IFA seems to give up already because they know that it is a fight they will never win. After the game, a French journalist who was interviewed by BBC said that FFF would never accept a replay, because big money and industries involved and economic effect would be enormous. He was right. But what it would happen, if France lost with Irish footballer’s handball – would FIFA give the same judgement?

Henry admitted his handball but never say sorry. He said that replay would be fair for Ireland but AFTER FIFA and FFF refused a rematch. It was reported that he considered quitting “Les Bleus” but he decided to stay anyway – all talks doesn’t convince me if he is truly remorseful, but I believe he is saying whatever to repair his image and just waiting for everyone to forget about his ‘mistake’

I don’t call it setup, but FIFA and FFF’s reluctance to correct their convenient result is truly disappointing, and now I strengthen my belief that soccer is just another business, and always a stronger with bigger political power wins – fair play is a mere myth for important games like this. I read an interesting article by the Sunday Times “Conspiracy or coque up?” The play-offs were seeded on the basis of world rankings in favour of the bigger nations, and it was reported that the proposal to introduce seeding had come from UEFA (president is former French player Michel Platini). Why? Could it be related to the advance long-term television contracts, or the influence by one of a big sponsor which will possibly gain huge profit if France win? For some reason, Platini and FIFA president Sepp Blatter are said to be reluctant to introduce video technology, which can bring fairer judgement – why? Maybe a coincidence, but all these things sound pretty dubious.

Also it is very interesting to see the different stances between British and French media. Though French media criticizes their team done terrible in the game but they don’t attack the FIFA and the FFF of their judgement. On the other hand, British media is harsh on Henry as ‘cheat’ or “fallen idol,’ as well as on the FIFA. Probably this is due to the difference in Anglo-Saxons and Latins mentality: in compare to Anglo-Saxons’ values in fairness and justice, Latins would just think, “luck is also a part of his ability” “miracle” “godsend” – they would never criticize someone who give them a jackpot, even though from a devil.

In addition, for English, this incident reminds them of the nightmarish Hand of God goal, scored by footballer Diego Maradona during the 1986 FIFA World Cup quarter final Argentina vs England – probably it explains why British media is so obsessed with this incident which is not related to their own team.

French must be happy that the opponent was Ireland – if it was Egypt or Algeria, it would be a huge riot!

I am extremely sorry for Ireland who lost a chance to go to World Cup, due to a lack of political power in football world, rather than their lack of ability. Shame on Henry, shame on France, and shame on FIFA!

This álbum – NAU – brings us 11 deliciously urban tracks with heavy guitars that shows the metal influences of the guitar player Zique, and gives away to a psychedelic atmosphere that was a little low profile that time.

Female singer Vange Leonel with her beautiful voice and much sensuality guides throughout this record.

The hard atmosphere of this album makes me avoid the term ‘new wave’ to describe it, but in 1986 nobody paid attention to that.

This band (also called NAU) is a one album band, but as pearl it belongs to the treasure chest and stands as a witness of the richness of the Brazilian post-punk bands in the 80s

It’s been a very bluesy winter so far, I’ve noticed, but that doesn’t matter. Today I am going to talk about the last of the Albert Collins albums I have thus far heard:

I notice sometimes, while listening to the Blues, just how much it parallels comedy. I mean, some of it is comedy, like a couple of tracks from this album, but essentially the Blues and comedy are two things that make light of a bad situation, and evoke a real feeling of joy where once there was tension. It’s not a perfect analogy, but let’s take the first song on this set as an example, the song “Cash Talkin’ (The Workingman’s Blues)”:

Well I walked down to my bank, just to see what I could see
I asked the man behind the desk, I say “Ah, is there any money for me?”
Now he didn’t know just what to say
I say, “I need that money in a terrible way!”
Now he didn’t say “yeah” but he didn’t say “no”
He just shook my hand and showed me the door

Oh Lord, the blues is killin’ me

Now, the situation is already funny, at least to me, because he’s just walking into random banks and asking for money. Thing is, being poor does suck, and this song will tell you that, but even if you are poor like Albert Collins’ character here (and I am), the upbeat, funky blues song with Albert’s trademark chilled Telecaster sound is going to make you feel good about it. Good comedy and good Blues should serve the purpose of making you feel better about some very real problems.

The problems, of course, are not something like existential angst or an inability to cope with people (see: most other kinds of music), but the Blues have a very limited agenda. Mainly it’s songs about being poor or low-down in some other way, and of course, relationship problems, like in the somewhat cliché “Lights Are On But Nobody’s Home”:

When I have to go to work
I gotta go to work downtown
If I get home a little late baby
You say I’m out messing around

Now you’re still accusing me baby
Accusing me of doing wrong
I can see your lights on baby
But I can’t see, I can’t see nobody home

Still, the words don’t really matter for about 50% of what this song is trying to convey. Thanks to the organ-heavy slow-jam vibe of the whole thing, it’s the guitars, the horns, even the rhythm section that’s really telling the story. This happens to be one of my favorite songs by Albert, mainly because it’s a more earnest message that’s being put across, that love doesn’t dissolve just because one person is accusing the other of doing wrong, it’s just a thing that has to be dealt with, usually by calling the woman crazy, which I’m all for.

Again, like comedy, the subject of relationships dictated by the chaos that exists behind every woman’s imagination can still be made into something good. Now, the line between joke and song is blurred quite a lot for tracks like “I Ain’t Drunk” (special video note: jeeze that keyboardist is having too much fun).

Basically, it’s a song based on the popular phrase “I ain’t drunk, I’m just drinking”, which I’m pretty sure predates this song somewhat, but I couldn’t find substantial evidence of that on the internet. Either way, the song is kind of great because, within the song’s later part, Collins slurs his singing more and argues with the backup singers, whose sole singing parts are “But you’re so high” (“high” being another term for “drunk” in this instance). It’s an awesome song, and you can probably tell the crowds really dug it.

A really interesting song on this album is the lengthy jam “Too Many Dirty Dishes”, which is constructed exactly like “Snowed In” from the album Frosbite of 6 years previous. It’s another slow, pensive jam wherein Collins questions his wife’s activities while he’s out, observing that, indeed, there are too many dirty dishes for just the two people:

Too many dirty dishes in the sink for just us two
You got me wondering baby… Who’s making dirty dishes with you?

I kind of absolutely love that line.

The interesting thing about the song goes beyond that. He never actually accuses his wife of cheating on him or anything, so it’s not a dramatic song or anything, and in fact there’s a lengthy portion of the 7 minute song that is Albert talking to his guitar:

“Look at all these dirty dishes”
(empathetic guitar notes)

It actually sounds more like she’s having a party while he’s away, because apparently the dishes are stacked “outta sight”, and in fact he starts to “clean” the dishes, making scraping and popping noises with the guitar strings while he complains. Then he sings:

I’ve done your dirty dishes
How much am I supposed to take?
When I left I had corn flakes for breakfasts
Now there’s a bone from a T-bone steak

Which is followed up with a screachy, energetic guitar solo before the song fades out. That’s one thing I love about the greatest Blues guitarists, the guitar becomes a character in the song, almost like a sidekick to the singer’s message. Take note of that if you ever want to be a blues stringer.

Despite the presence of 2 lengthy slow jams on the album, there is a bit of variety to the sound on Cold Snap, “Snatchin’ It Back”, for instance, is more of a funk/soul number, kind of like his later work, perhaps more James Brown than anything. Fortunately, the guitar voice never changes, thus every track has Albert Collins all over, from the funky blues of “Cash Talkin’” to the swingin’ instrumental at the end, mysteriously called “Fake I.D.”. What does a fake ID have to do with swing music? Either way, it’s always a thrill to hear Collins swing, as his solos become so convoluted and odd that it would probably just frustrate guitarists who attempted to replicate it, and that’s why there will never be another guitarist quite like Albert Collins.

Thanksgiving or Christmas? It would be hard to choose which one is my favorite holiday. Both are dear to my heart as it means treasured time spent with my family and friends! One of the most special Thanksgivings I ever had was in 1986. This was the year that Rick and I lived in San Pedro, California while Rick finished out his last year of his 4 year term in the Navy. It was also the first year I would not be with my family for the holidays. Thank God for our Navy family/friends Gary and Nacole. They would not be able to go back home for the holiday either. We decided to tackle the job of cooking our first Thanksgiving and spending it together. Nacole was a GREAT cook, while I on the other hand, got by cooking hamburger helper and spaghetti, so this was going to be interesting. If I remember correctly, we did have boneless Ham and boneless Turkey and the dressing was Stove top Stuffing. Nacole brought over her candles which did help distract from the burnt pots “I” used as serving dishes.

Sending “Thanks” to our dear friends Gary, Nacole and family in Idaho. We are blessed to call you friends and I wouldn’t trade the year we spent together as a Navy family for anything!

Funny thing… Rick and I only had 2 plates. So Nacole and Gary had to bring their own. I still have those 2 plates. Can’t bring myself to part with them. Everyone thinks they are ugly and won’t eat off them but me.

A final run of 2.8-litre injected models badged as the Capri 280, were introduced in March 1987. Painted in Brooklands dark green, with red and white coachlines, they were tastefully trimmed in leather and fitted with 7J X 15-in alloy wheels. Costing £11,999 each, just 1,038 280s were built making them instant classics. It represented a dignified end for Ford’s sport coupe, which had seen continuous production for the 18 years from November 1968 until December 1986 and notched up a total of nearly 1.9 million copies.

The recent rout of BJP in the election was dubbed as the fall of the communal agenda. But, contrary

The recent rout of BJP in the election was dubbed as the fall of the communal agenda. But, contrary to the belief, Rajiv Gandhi was the one in 1986, who recognized the political potential of Hindutva, before Advani envisaged its gains.

In context of India the ‘other’ was located in Pakistan, during the Khalistan movement and the Assam separatist movement. Indira’s Congress held that Pakistani Government had perpetrated these subversive movements, who wished to avenge Bangladesh.

The two identities became antithesis when Babri Masjid was opened to Hindu sadhus for worship by Rajiv Gandhi in 1986. Until then the sadhus were only allowed to enter the Masjid premises, once in a year and worship in the temple that they called Ramjanmabhoomi.

Till 1987, Hindutva did not feature anywhere in BJP’s resolution or literature. After the assassination of Mahatama Gandhi, the parent party, Jana Sangh had further distanced itself from the ideology of the Hindu Mahasabha. It fought the 1984 general elections on its “Five Commitments” – “nationalism and national integration”, “democracy”, “positive secularism”, “Gandhian socialism” and “value-based politics”. The elections saw decimation of BJP, with the party struggling with only two seats in the Lok Sabha.

In the following years the BJP realized that the “Five Commitments” had dazed the political workers of BJP, the RSS cadres. At the same time it realized that Congress had been successful by the playing the Hindu Nationalist card. Therefore, in 1989 at its National Executive Committee meet at Palampur, BJP adopted the Babri Masjid issue as an election issue. BJP added 85 seats in its kitty in the 1989 elections.

When the ranks of Rahul Gandhi say something like had a Gandhi been active in 1992, Babri demolition wouldn’t have happened, it becomes important to remind that it is their activities which set the mood for the demolition.

____

“The Battle of Chernobyl” is a Controlled Message, similar to the “DoE Openness Project” which was begun in 1994 after the coverup of human radiation experiments was exposed to the public. While telling the story of what happened at the Chernobyl plant in the aftermath of the explosion, the scope of the documentary is narrow enough to encapsulate the event in a construct of time-and-place that continues to minimize the “lesson” of Chernobyl – we woke a monster, endured its rampage, and put it back to sleep knowing someday it will awaken again.

An interview segment with Gorbachev, who led the USSR into the policy of Glasnost (openness) as a direct result of the disaster, is heard saying that the international community must come together and cooperate in creating new and safer sources of energy. These are the same approximate words of the internationalists who literally created nuclear power in the first place! They knew in the 1940s that “Chernobyls” would occur. They knew that “containment” was impossible –impossible!! And still they advocated bringing this menace into the world as a means of obtaining the Grand Prize: world government.

The hubris of science and government has changed little. If they ever told us the truth about nuclear accidents and the real dangers of radiation, whole systems would come crashing down, especially that of modern medicine. What we get instead are haunting statements peppered over measured confessions.

The drama of The Battle of Chernobyl is that only expendable men, by the thousands, could manage the clean-up –robotic machines, too few and expensive presumably, could not hold up in the fatally radioactive environment of the damaged plant. In the film we are treated to images of grainy photos and must imagine that the same volume of disrupting particles that ruins pictures courses through bodies of flesh and blood. And so it does.

In the 1970s, before Three-Mile-Island and “The China Syndrome”, I became personally aware of existing ’safe’ technologies in the process of being squelched by the corporate energy giants. It was a harbinger of a great Energy War to come and a certainty that our destiny was being steered for the maximum benefit of the exploiters who were poising themselves to win. Today we have a name for the war –Global Climate Change.

Rocky and Bullwinkle are 50 today.

Yes, it was Nov. 19, 1959, that “Rocky and His Friends” debuted on ABC. It’s one of my faves from way back.

Here are some nice birthday tributes from the newspapers in Milwaukee, Dallas and Santa Rosa, Calif., along with Creative Loafing, an indie weekly. If you somehow need a further reminder of the greatness of Moose and Sqvirrel, go watch 20 episodes from that first season over at Hulu.

This also gives me an opportunity to step into the WABAC machine …

… and share the story behind a tune shared here a couple of years ago.

“Hey Rocky!” is a little bit of house music that came out of Chicago in 1986. All kinds of samples from the old Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons are laid over dance beats.

The artist, credited as Boris Badenough, is really Dean Anderson, a Chicago musician and composer (and a fellow Wisconsin native). We exchanged e-mails after he came across that post. Dean tells how “Hey Rocky!” came to be:

“The making of the record was supported (in addition to my fondness for the Moose and Squirrel) by a guy named Larry Sherman, who started Trax Records. He had a major dislike for his main competitor in Chicago, Rocky Jones, who ran arch-rival record label DJ International. Thus the ‘Hey Rocky, hey Rocky/Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat.’ All good fun.

“The record actually did really well! It started off on radio station B96 here in Chicago, and then Dr. Demento added it into rotation on his nationally syndicated show, and other stations picked it up across the country. At the time, I got a bunch of calls to do interviews for radio stations from San Francisco to New York, and many points in between (like Oklahoma, Virginia, Florida). It was kind of wild, since I made the record as sort of a joke.

“The record label had Frankie Knuckles (big-time DJ) and Marshall Jefferson (big-time house artist at the time) do dance club remixes, and so the record then got exposure in the club scene. It was picked up by London Records in Great Britain, and enjoyed some success on British radio for a while there. It made it to the Billboard dance charts shortly thereafter, and all told, the label moved many thousands of units.”

Ah, the power of Moose and Sqvirrel. Enjoy it again.

“Hey Rocky!” Boris Badenough (Dean Anderson), 1986, the A side of the Trax Records 12-inch single TX130. The B side is the instrumental version. It’s out of print. Anderson gets the writing credit; Frankie Knuckles gets the mixing credit.

Anderson is still in Chicago, and still at it. He runs Music + Pictures, and explains it this way: “I compose music for television and film. I am also a video editor, having edited music videos for the likes of R. Kelly, Public Enemy, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, De La Soul, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne and a whole bunch of bands nobody ever heard as well.”

Nice work, sir.

Seeing as I’ve only got this on 12” (OK, I’ve got it on mp3 now, but for the purposes of the exercise let’s pretend it’s still this morning), we broke with tradition and watched it on YouTube. Consequently, Junior considers the song a mere soundtrack to Julian Cope’s hair and leather jacket. She liked both.

So that’s two Crucial Three-ers in a row, but we won’t complete the set because Echo and the Bunnymen didn’t release any singles in 1986. Jules was another eccentric with a bye into the charts in the 80s, and who can be surprised when he was chucking out taut, smart, pop triumphs like this?

Junior went off to school murmuring, “Shut your mouth, shut your mouth”. Great.
