Like it needs an introduction. I would credit this as one of the tracks that probably turned me off my Hip-Hop leaning path back to the heavier techno sounds of hardcore. It was close but with a gurntacular piano riff like this who could blame me? Its so good that I credit it still with being in my top five records of all time. I could put it down to nostalgia but once that piano break gets going, I challenge anyone not to smile and start tapping their feet. Its the very example of why I love so many early nineties independent house tracks. It wasnt done for the money, it was done cause two guys with a synthesiser wanted to get their track played at their favourite club, The Hacienda.

Awesome.

Also See : The End by John Carpenter

From Discogs
‘Hardcore Uproar’ was written and pressed as a white-label with the specific aim of getting it played at the legendary Hacienda nightclub in Manchester. Not only did it get played there but the track proved so popular that it went on to get a commercial release and reached #12 in the UK music chart.
Suddi is still based in Manchester, has composed the music for numerous video games and now has his own audio design company.
Tragically Jonathon and his girlfried Emma (who provided the vocals on The Together Mix listed below) were both killed in a road accident on the island of Ibiza, circa 1991. R.I.P. A tribute night for them called Harmony was held at the Hacienda in September 1991.

Written by: Kurt Cobain Produced by: Butch Vig Released: Sept. ‘91 on DGC Charts: 20 weeks Top

Written by: Kurt Cobain
Produced by: Butch Vig
Released: Sept. ‘91 on DGC
Charts: 20 weeks
Top spot: No. 6

Producer Butch Vig first heard “Smells Like Teen Spirit” in early 1991, on a boombox cassette recorded by bassist Krist Novoselic, drummer Dave Grohl and singer-guitarist-songwriter Kurt Cobain in a barn in Tacoma, Washington. The fidelity was abysmal. Vig — about to work with Nirvana on their major-label debut, Nevermind — could not tell that the song would soon make underground punk the new mainstream and catapult Cobain, a troubled young man with strict indie-culture ethics, into megacelebrity. “I could sort of hear the ‘Hello, hello’ part and the chords,” Vig said years later. “But it was so indecipherable that I had no idea what to expect.”

Nor did anyone else. A shock wave of big-amp purity, “Teen Spirit” wiped the lingering jive of the Eighties off the pop map overnight. “The song was a call to consciousness,” Novoselic said in 2000 — Cobain’s avenging grenade against the corporate invasion of youth culture, spiked with the demanding venom of the sneering chorus: “Here we are now/Entertain us.” The phrase was something Cobain used to say as he walked into parties — “to break the ice,” he said. It was also “an insight into how Kurt thought of the world,” Novoselic said. “That could have been him sitting there, watching TV, aghast at popular culture.”

“Teen Spirit,” named after a brand of deodorant for girls, was Cobain’s attempt to “write the ultimate pop song,” he said, using the soft-loud dynamic of his favorite band, the Pixies. The insidious hooks also showed his admiration for John Lennon. Cobain “had that dichotomy of punk rage and alienation,” Vig said, “but also this vulnerable pop sensibility. In ‘Teen Spirit,’ a lot of that vulnerability is in the tone of his voice.”

Sadly, by the time of Nirvana’s last U.S. tour, in late ‘93, Cobain was tortured by the obligation to play “Teen Spirit” every night. “There are many other songs that I have written that are as good, if not better,” he claimed. He finally stopped playing “Teen Spirit” for good — taking his own life on April 5th, 1994.

On the subject of Massive Attack, another stunner from Blue Lines in honor of today’s Thanksgiving. The whole album should be mandatory listening for anyone wishing to be a part of the human race. One of the best albums of all time for me.

Diggin’ the scene with a gangster lean..
From Discogs
Probably the best, certainly the most important , album of the decade, Blue Lines defined the sound of Britain´s carcass after Thatcher had finished with it. Blue Lines was the first representation of a certain kind of syncretic Britishness that would define the island´s music for the next decade.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Holy shit man. That was my reaction after seeing this movie. Damn this was a darkass movie but shit,

Holy shit man. That was my reaction after seeing this movie. Damn this was a darkass movie but shit, who am I kidding, it’s a Coen Brothers movie. Duh!

Idealistic playwright Barton Fink (John Turturro) believes writing should reveal the hopes, dreams and tragedies of the common man. When Hollywood taps him to write a movie, Fink develops severe writer’s block and soon falls victim to a strange sequence of events. Unable to combine his deep-seated ethics with Tinseltown’s frivolity, the disillusioned and desperate Fink winds up involved in a murder investigation.

The Coen Bros. know how to tell a story and as in life, stories are not all pretty and happy. All of their movies are basically all different genres rolled into one film but this one is the strangest of all: it combines film noir, really dark comedy, and a little bit of horror. This is probably one of the strangest films about Hollywood that I’ve ever seen, and mostly all films about Hollywood are strange.

The film is basically taken inside the mind of Barton Fink and you see everything and how it is for him. He gains writer’s block and that’s when things start to gay hay-wire. I liked how it was stylized with symbolism that I usually didn’t get, but I think that the Coens could have made it a little more clearer. I found myself fighting what was real and what was fiction, rather than actually watching the movie and understanding the hidden messages.

But the problem is that as the film gets stranger and stranger, I started to get more and more confused with the movie itself. There have been plenty of films with how Hollywood looks, but this is one of how it is a state of mind. The movie tries to be more mysterious than actually making sense, and although most of its main messages are brought up, I think the central message of Hollywood itself wasn’t brought up so well.

Despite the confusion, The Coen Brothers are what makes this film its best. They use lighting and a gritty setting to create the mood for the film, even without really getting deeper into the plot. I liked this and I did feel like I was some place that wasn’t safe and very psychological. It looks like it was literally filmed in the 40s, with some areas of the world and how beautifully real they actually look.

Now this cast is what will surely blow you away. John Tuturro probably plays one of his greatest roles yet as a struggling writer who gains writer’s block and just cannot get out of it, he fully captures this man and becomes enraveled in Barton Fink. The best out of the whole supporting cast is definetly John Goodman. At first he plays this lovable, sweet, kind-hearted guy that really does bring some heart to the film, but by the end that all changes and he shows that magnificentially.

One last thing about this film is that almost every minute you just have got to watch for the symbolism, cause by the end your going start wondering what was ever solved in the first place.

Consensus: Barton Fink is a very confusing and strange piece of work from The Coens, but features effective mood changes with some beautiful set designs, and two amazing lead performances from Goodman and Tuturro.

8/10=Matinee!!!

I have little to no respect for this college, but can’t get past the relief offered by the fact that Uncle Tug would be right there when my baby left the nest.

Here’s an example of why I think the college is a joke.

When I was there, I was a linguistics major.

This meant that one day my poor brain had to leave a French final and head straight to a German final.

I had stayed up listening to classical music with a salad made of M&Ms and Fritos for two nights in a row trying to think exclusively in first one, then another and then another foreign language.

I showed up for my exams exhausted, but prepared.

Another French class showed up for its final in the Coors Events Center to find it full of tall women. Fun fact: The Coors Events Center was so named my second year there, because Coors made a donation toward a facility for the football players. So many students objected to the politics of the brewery’s founding family that someone sneaked out in the night to change the marquee to the oops Events Center. Lots, including me, didn’t want to graduate in a building with the brewer’s name on it. Why couldn’t they have made the teamhouse his namesake?

The basketball coach and the French teacher had double-booked. They called Regents — or whoever was in charge of telling academic faculty they came second to athletics — and had it out.

“My team needs to practice.”

“My class needs to be tested the evaluate the success of the education their families are killing themselves to pay for.” (I’m paraphrasing and injecting bias.)

The verdict: The team gets the space. Give each student an A on the exam and excuse the class from taking it.

I had to earn the A scratched across my final, yet their grades carried just as much weight.

Ive ragged on Orbital once this week, yet I forgot all about Belfast. Its THE comedown song. The only piece of electronica bestowed with the ability to put your head back together after a beast of a night.

The LP version offers more time to recover.

An absolute legend of a track, for me. Simple genius. It is alleged that the idea for the song came about after a very late night cab journey through Belfast. Having had night similar to that through London, I can believe it.

One for you Alex.

Emily groaned as she threw her books down in the back seat of the bus. The god awful bus that she was forced to ride everyday. Day after long day while her friends drove. Some thier shiney new cars. Mommy and daddy must have really thought they were really good. Some of them in old pick up trucks, or old beater cars. The old pick up trucks were most favored by the high school boys. Cause they were good ole boys country boys… Well at least some of them. Emily actually had an old beater of her very own. But was she driving it nooooo…. The thing really was an old beater a 1984 something or another, that she bought and paid for with her own money. Not to old though since then it was only 1991.

But she did have a job, not that there were very many jobs close by. She had to go thirty-five minutes one way just to get to the town close enough to have a mall. But in that mall she worked at Venture. Took the job her sophomore year in high school, working in the snack bar that served a hot and ready treat to all the harried shoppers. With the money from there she paid her own car payment. And her own insurance, kept up her school work, and took part in a few of the after school clubs. Mainly the newspaper, Emily loved being on the school newspaper.

But if she had a car why was Emily on the god forsaken bus! “Ugh its not fair.” she thought to herself as she stared out the window.

But Emily knew she had messed up. The weekend before she had gone out with her friends. Emily wasn’t driving, she didn’t even take her car! But she went to the country with her friends, drank strawberry hill till the early morning. And came home drunk, nearly bouncing off of the old mobile homes walls. Her bad luck had it that her step dad was home from work, and of course he heard her. In her drunk state she hurled a few explitives when asked if she had been drinking. Of course that wasn’t well recieved. And now she was grounded from her car, untill after graduation.

Emily stared out the window thinking a little harder. Her forhead wrinkled from the scowl on her face she pressed her face against the school bus window, and settled in for the forty-five minute ride.

The boys from FSOL under the Mental Cube moniker released this monstrous STORMER onto an unsuspecting public. Its one of the most mature, rocking, flat out pounding techno crossover tracks of the early nineties. What makes it so amazing is hard to pin down, it might be the string section with its uplifting melancholy (!) or could it be the twangy 808 bassline? No idea, but I LOVE this tune. I could listen to it forever.

From Discogs
“Q” is one of the best songs FSOL ever made. Its amazing to see how Brian Dougans & Garry Cobain brought both of their amazing minds together to make such a Beautiful, Powerful & Enjoyable Techno Track.
This ill take to my grave!
6 Out of 5.

Gianni Versace was the scion for excess in the 90’s, his Latin-Mediterranean sensuality updating the past decade’s exuberance for a cyber punk- hyper visual world. In the face of minimalism, Gianni excelled at juggling a graphic mélange of pattern and texture that felt current, seductive, humorous, and relevant. And right now, it’s a current in the air…
