The year is 1994. The Montreal Canadiens are the defending Stanley Cup Champions. The season is on the horizon and all 26 teams are geared up for another run at Lord Stanley’s Cup.

This isn’t the NHL history book. This is the beginning of a hobby project. Kenada’s NHL is the National Hockey League as it happens on the Sega Genesis game NHL ‘94, still arguably the top hockey game ever made. Every game will be played in every season. Trades will happen, free agent signings will take place, and injuries too. Just like the real deal, only it will all take place via NHL ‘94. Will the Red Wings end their Stanley Cup drought? Will the Rangers for that matter? Who’s careers will turn out differently…or on a different team? Time shall tell. But don’t worry, Ron Barr will be there the whole way to keep you up to date.

Ace of Base – All that she wants.

We all remember Swedish dance act Ace of Base. What a classic song. It is however hard to believe that in 1993 Ace of Base sold over 30 million albums, impressive considering the last Swedish band to do so were the likes of Roxette and ABBA. All That She Wants got to number one in the UK charts in 1993/4.

Mariah Carey- Hero

Mariah is the definition on the 90’s female singer. She had an amazing voice and some great pop songs, which were arguably her best. Which is why we’re struggling to understand how Hero only peaked at number 7 in the charts. This is an outrage, considering 2008’s X-Factor contestants got to number one with it. This is Mariah at her best!

R Kelly-Bump ‘n’ Grind
Oh R Kelly, remember him? It’s a shame that his career has taken such a nose dive in recent years when we remember that this was the kind of pop, R’n'B magic that he used to come out with. This was R Kellys first number one solo hit in the US, the first of many!

Salt-N-Pepa (ft En Vogue) -Whatta Man

It seems 1994 was a great year for R’nB in the UK. Salt-N-Pepa shot to fame in the 1980’s with the likes of Push It, which still to this day fills dance floors all over. But songs such as this were also highly successful but seem to have been forgotten. So we would like to remind you not only how great Salt-N-Pepa were at producing great dance records but just how good Whatta Man was.Featuring En Vogue (an early template of what Destiny’s Child came to be) this song only reached number 7 in the UK charts, an outrage we say.

Meat Loaf-I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)

This Meat Loaf track lasted 11.58, nowadays for some this a running length of a whole album. Meat Loaf definately knew how to craft a well refined power ballad. A karaoke classic all over, everyone seems to know the words to this 1994 number one smash.

The Sensi-tize boys barely try with this tune, they literally lift the best bits of Clubhouses’ “Light My Fire”, pitch it up 20% and chuck a banging breakbeat behind it. Still, if thats not what sample culture is about, I dont know what is. A rocking piece of uplifting hardcore breakbeat.

HERE COMES THE BREAK!

Wow…the next three years were pivotal. For me, and many others, these were some of the best in part because of the emergence of funky breaks and in 1994 there were two records for me that summed it up best. First, the huge bass heavy sound of the Dust Brothers’ “Chemical Beats” (we now know them as the Chemical Brothers). There is no doubt this track helped guide the slower, groovier break scene to the spotlight. There is still another that has just stuck with me for years as being the sickest of 1994, a track off Jim Hopkins’ Twitch label and produced by artists Courtney Nielsen & DJ Spun under the name Central Fire. I included both versions of the track “Central Fire (Yes People It’s Time: Part 1 & 2).” Part 1 is especially good and it brings back great memories of some bad ass years in dance music.

Central Fire (Yes People, It’s Time Pt 1&2)

BTW, can I tell you now that 1995 is going to be near impossible…so much good music came out it won’t be easy to narrow it down to one.

As well, I would love to hear what YOUR favorite tracks are from these years!

It has been a very long time since I was so touched and moved by a film. Even though Il Postino wooed audiences and critics more than a decade ago, I only got to see it in 2007 for the first time. The Italian film is directed by Michael Radford, and based on the novel called El cartero de Neruda written by Antonio Skármeta. The story tells of real-life poet and communist politician Pablo Neruda (played by Philippe Noiret), who is exiled to Italy to escape arrest in his native Chile, where communism has been outlawed. Mario Ruoppolo (Massimo Troisi) and his fisherman father lead a very simple life together in the village. Mario gets a job to deliver Neruda’s mail and like everyone else, he becomes enchanted by Neruda, the poet and the man. They strike up a friendship in which Neruda teaches him about poetry and the magic of words. Mario’s life is turned upside down when he falls in love with a beautiful girl, Beatrice Russo (Maria Grazia Cucinotta). He needs words more than ever now to win over the girl of his dreams.

It is easy to see why Il Postino is so well-known and why it has endured as an artwork. The film deals with universal issues and themes which are timeless and everlasting: the need to belong and be accepted; friendship; the beauty and truth in words; romantic love; and love for the simple things in life. Il Postino as well as Neruda’s poetry appeal to both young and old, rich and poor, erudite and uneducated, because it is plain and simple whilst conjuring up magical moments in life.

Nothing is superfluous in this film. The dialogue is stripped and economical, yet succeeds in capturing the tenderness between Neruda, an intellectual, and Mario, a simple man who happens to appreciate the power of words. It makes one laugh and cry, think and feel, be content with where one is and dream of achieving more. The film made me forget about all of life’s sorrows, and filled me up with the greatest appreciation for being alive, being able to love, and being loved in return. This film affirms the hope that nothing and nobody in life is insignificant.

The acting is heartfelt and unpretentious, restrained and subtle. I was shocked to find out that the actor who plays Mario, Massimo Troisi, died a day after filming ended. He needed a heart transplant and postponed surgery to finish the film. Well, what a legacy to leave behind in the form of this everlasting film.

SPOILER WARNING! DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU HAVE NOT YET SEEN THE FILM! How ironic that Mario dies in the film and Massimo dies in real life. And how heartbreaking as well. Mario’s death can indirectly be attributed to his friendship with Neruda. One can argue that if he had never met Neruda, he never would have gone to that communist rally and never would have died. But one can also argue that if he had never met Neruda, he would never have achieved such self-realisation and he would never have had the courage to win over Beatrice or to try his hand at poetry. If it had been his time to leave this earth, he would never have been able to leave it with such a sense of self-worth and self-satisfaction if he had not met Neruda. His poem is lost in the film, and this is all well and good. It doesn’t matter whether the poem was any good or not, for Mario finally found his own voice. Mario lives on in his son, Pablito. And Massimo lives on through Il Postino. And the real Neruda lives on through his poetry. People perish, but legacies last.

This writeup is more or less dedicated to my brother, who is an enthusiastic fan of this band, and who had a birthday today. He also loaned me this album so I could listen to it, which I was planning on doing anyway, so there’s also that.

Ah, Sunny Day Real Estate, at last we meet. I have heard about this band for nearly half my life, and judging the connections between this band and one of the most reviled genres in music (“Emo”), I knew that these guys would either be amazing or the most vile thing to ever pass through my headphones.

Turns out… they’re pretty ok!

Thing is, it’s been impossible for me to avoid eventually listening to this band, and when the scope of their influence stretches from Dashboard Confessional to Death Cab For Cutie, you can be assured I was not looking forward to the experience. Interestingly, even before those jokers were huge and before “Emo” meant anything other than “The world’s greatest comedian“, I knew about Sunny Day Real Estate, because I’m an enthusiastic fan of Poor Old Lu.

The connection between Sunny Day Real Estate and Poor Old Lu is, at best, a tangential one. Before Poor Old Lu or Sunny Day were around, the boys that made up Lu and Sunny Day’s 2nd (and enduring) lead singer Jeremy Enigk were in one of those high school bands that every musician goes through at some point, and they played exactly one show, I imagine probably in front of about 3 people and 2 dogs, before going their separate ways. Poor Old Lu went on to be the best “alternative” act in the Christian music thing, and Jeremy went on to carve out a fine career helping to invent a genre that is Hell-bent on digging my brain an early grave. Oh, and Jeremy came back to sing a song on a Poor Old Lu EP, so there’s also that.

The association with Jeremy Enigk is something Poor Old Lu would be saddled with forever, and if they weren’t one of my favorite bands, I would simply laugh about it. I’ve read interviews where the inevitable question of “SAY I HEARD YOU GUYS WORKED WITH JEREMY ENIGK ONCE WHAT WAS THAT LIKE” arises like if one were to grow up with the name Michael Bolton and get the daily “Is that your real name?” question. If you were to somehow wind up on the Wikipedia page about Jeremy Enigk, you would see, under “Guest Vocal Appearances”, that he is credited for “Poor Old Lu – “Answering Machine Message” on Sin (1994)”. That is not a song. Seriously! It was literally an answering machine message tucked way into the darkness of the end of that album as an Easter egg, and it’s Jeremy, as a child, calling the band’s future bassist in an attempt to get his mom’s necklace back due to some misunderstanding. This is not worth mentioning, yet I have already mentioned it twice on this blog, so I hope you’re happy, Wikipedia.

Anyway, now I’ve spent over half of this writeup associating Sunny Day Real Estate with their tangential connection with Poor Old Lu instead of talking about them, how mischeivous!

So yes, Diary. This is the band’s first album, made just minutes after being signed to a record label during their second show ever, for all of you “career musicians” out there who have been playing for 10 years without a prospect. To be honest, I should hate this album. It has the (mostly) toneless, reverb-laden electric guitars and indiscernable shouting that only “emo” music can pass off as singing. The drums are there, all right, and the bass is adequately lost in the mix like any pop recording. Indeed, the guitars kind of dominate on this album, and after seeing the credits on the album I came across the producer’s name, Brad Wood, and was immediately like “Oooooh“ (for you folks out there who want to hate along at home, this is the producer who did The Smashing Pumpkins’ Adore album).

So it surprised me as much as anyone that I actually really like this album. Well, ok, I *like* this album, the “really” part is reserved for a handful of songs. Basically, there are two ways in which I like to enjoy this album. The first is to just listen to the opening track, “Seven”, which has recently gotten the Guitar Hero treatment, and then be done with it. It’s a magnificent track with guitar hooks, busy drumming, and those wonderful beat shifts that really get the blood flowing. Jeremy’s voice is great, kind of a lispy, 15 year old Bono if Bono didn’t know how to control his voice (he does, believe it or not). The real strength of Jeremy Enigk’s voice isn’t the ability to control it, it’s the sheer muscle. If there’s a note to hit, he’ll pinch until he gets close enough. Indeed, the effect is stunning on this particular recording, but for the hundreds of emo groups, professional and amateur, that have followed in this band’s wake? Not so much, in fact I wish to commit violent acts against them, if violence were my style.

The second way I can enjoy this album is by listening to the whole thing, front to back, and then kind of zone out until something interesting happens, usually somewhere toward the middle of a song, before it lapses back into kind of a sludgy mess. The sludge doesn’t bother me though, I have checked out the lyrics, and they are just abstract enough to be bereft of any points of contention on any reasonable person’s part. Basically, the lyrics are too esoteric to suck, it’s like how a colorful smattering of fingerpaints isn’t really art, but since there’s no possible way to see a picture in it, you just kind of have to take the artist’s word for it, and it’s also somehow still pleasant to behold. So yeah, Sunny Day are no Rembrant when it comes to songwriting, but there are enough enjoyable points on the album to kind of drift along for an hour and be all the better for it at the end.

I also do appreciate that they whip out a piano in the album’s second half for an interlude so brief I’m not even going to try and type the title out.

The version I was able to borrow for this writeup is the 2009 re-release, which is definitely worth a purchase, because for some reason the band included two songs, appropriately titled “8″ and “9″, and both songs are exponentially better than anything else on the album proper. I think they did that just to mess with everyone.

So yes, this may seem more of a cantankerous acceptance of an album rather than a glowing review, but given the genre, they’re lucky to get even that. If “emo” had died with the breakup of Sunny Day Real Estate over a decade ago, we would really have no problems, but with all the emo bands out there, and not to mention the indie bands that were spawned out of that, there is no reason that I shouldn’t hate these guys, except that I understand that they aren’t the “first” emo band, only one of the more influential. Also, the differences between these guys and a band like, oh say, Jimmy Eat World or Angels & Airwaves are wide enough that I don’t want them to die in a terrible car crash, so there’s also that.

HALLELUJAH

Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja

E dalle tue labbra fece uscire l’Halleluja

Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja

Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja

Be’, forse c’è un dio lassù

Halleluia, Halleluia, Halleluia, Halleluia

IMDB rating: 6.00

Plot: Based on Mary Shelly’s novel, the hair-raising movie tells the sad story of Victor Frankenstein (Kenneth Brannagh), a promising young scientist. The doctor was so devastated by his mother’s death during childbirth that he became obsessed with the idea of bringing the deceased back to life, unaware of the consequences of his actions. The result of his experiment with the remains of the corpse and electricity was a simple, seemingly harmless creature (Robert De Niro) which, however, turned into a wrathful and vindictive monster after his ”father” abandoned him. Dr. Frankenstein wished he had never created him!

Repetitive nouns and confusing pronouns?
I am writing an essay for my english class about Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein. I find myself referring a lot to Victor and his creation and it’s coming to a point where it is becoming annoying. As I reread my own paper, I find it an eyesore to see the repetitive use of "Victor" "Frankenstein" "his Creation "the creature" or "the monster". For example, this is one small part of my essay:

"The creature is a character that deserves sympathy and pity, but its horrific appearance makes it difficult to show these feelings. However, it is not the fault of the creature. Frankenstein had not anticipated the horror that the monster could instilled in him and everyone else it encounters."

Here, I referred to "the creature" 3 times. How can I change this sentences without being so repetitive?

I only counted 2 times that the word "creature" was used. You used the word "monster" the third time. That’s good. Referring to him by a different word does make it less repetitive. One thing I would change is to refer to Frankenstein as "Dr. Frankenstein".

Also that should have been "could instill" instead of "could instilled".

I wonder if this would be better. "but its horrific appearance makes it difficult for the people it encounters to show these feelings".

Something about the sentence, "However, it is not the fault of the creature" doesn’t sound quite right. Perhaps you could say, "It is not his (the creature’s) fault that everyone is frightened of him."

The trend is strikingly visible in a single image from Rasmussen:

The green line is the people who like Obama. And it’s dropping like an asteroid. The red line is the people who don’t like Obama. And it’s going higher and higher. And the “-14″ is the difference between the people who really like Obama from the people who really don’t like him. As you can see, the “really don’t like hims” have it.

At traffic lights, I’m a big fan of encountering green. Here, I really love the red.

Obama is already speaking about the possibility that he might be so politically gangrenous by 2012 that he won’t even bother to run.

“You know, if – if I feel like I’ve made the very best decisions for the American people and three years from now I look at it and, you know, my poll numbers are in the tank and because we’ve gone through these wrenching changes, you know, politically, I’m in a tough spot, I’ll – I’ll feel all right about myself,” Obama told CNN’s Ed Henry.

Obama went on to say:

“I’d feel a lot worse, if at a time of such urgency for the American people I was spending a lot of time thinking about how I could position myself to ensure reelection.

“Because if I were doing that right now, I wouldn’t have taken on health care, I wouldn’t be taking on things that are unpopular,” the president said. “I wouldn’t be closing Guantanamo. There are a whole series of choices that I’m making that I know are going to create some political turbulence. But I think they’re the right thing to do, and history will bear out my theories or not.”

All I can say is, “or not.” You’re “theories” are bogus, Barry.

Health care was bad enough, in terms of a blatant display of either ignorance or disavowal of the clear will of the American people. But when you look at the determination to put Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and the other terrorists on civilian trial in New York City in the face of overwhelming rejection of the electorate, you can see that Obama frankly doesn’t give a damn what the nation thinks.

As Rasmussen puts it:

Just 29% agree with the decision to try Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and five other terrorists suspects in a New York city courtroom. Only 14% believe terrorist suspects should receive the same legal rights in court as U.S. citizens.

We can add the fact that Obama hasn’t bothered to try to keep our citizens safe at home or our soldiers safe abroad (or at home for that matter). Between Afghanistan, Fort Hood, and the H1N1 debacle, you’ve seriously got to wonder.

Only 47% of Americans at least somewhat approve of Obama. And only 47% of Democrats strongly approve of him.

But he’s not listening to you. He’s listening to George Soros and Andy Stern.

And there are portents of a total disaster for Democrats in 2010 if they continue on their suicidal path into the hard-core ideological liberal agenda they have been pursuing.

The Huffington Post (hardly even remotely CLOSE to being pro-conservative) has this:

NEW YORK — Despite sweeping Democratic successes in the past two national elections, continuing job losses and President Barack Obama’s slipping support could lead to double-digit losses for the party in next year’s congressional races and may even threaten their House control.

Fifty-four new Democrats were swept into the House in 2006 and 2008, helping the party claim a decisive majority as voters soured on a Republican president and embraced Obama’s message of hope and change. Many of the new Democrats are in districts carried by Republican John McCain in last year’s presidential contest; others are in traditional swing districts that have proved tough for either party to hold.

From New Hampshire to Nevada, House Democrats also will be forced to defend votes on Obama’s $787 billion economic recovery package and on energy legislation viewed by many as a job killer in an already weak economy.

Add to that the absence of Obama from the top of the ticket, which could reduce turnout among blacks, liberals and young people, and the likelihood of a highly motivated GOP base confused by the president’s proposed health care plan and angry at what they consider reckless spending and high debt.

Taken together, it could be the most toxic environment for Democrats since 1994, when the party lost 34 House incumbents and 54 seats altogether. Democrats currently have a 256-178 edge in the House, with one vacancy. Republicans would have to pick up 40 seats to regain control.

Republicans hold a six point lead over Democrats in generic balloting – and have held a lead for four months. That hasn’t happened since the dinosaurs walked the earth. That’s actually even bigger than it sounds, given the fact that those identifying themselves as “Republican” are considerably more likely to vote than those identifying themselves as “Democrat.”

On my own view, the Democrats aren’t in 1994 trouble; they’re actually more along the lines of being in 1997 trouble.

1997 was the year of the Heaven’s Gate cult mass suicide, as members – all wearing the same kind of Nike sneakers – committed suicide in order to beam themselves onto the spaceship hiding behind the Hale-Bopp comet.

As the Democrats pursue radical leftist policy after radical leftist policy, they are essentially saying, “Beam me up, Scotty!” just like their Heaven’s Gate intellectual forebears did before them. As the American people clearly are turning against the Democrats’ radicalism, the Democrats are calling for still more radicalism. It’s almost as if they’re saying, “If we guzzle more of our Kool-aid faster, we’ll be SURE to win.”

I was never a Bill Clinton fan. But one thing you could count on Slick Willie to do was whatever was politically best for Slick Willie. He was a liberal; but if the people demanded he be a moderate, he would suddenly discover that he was a moderate.

That isn’t Barry Hussein. He is a hard-core ideologue. People like me tried to warn you that the man who spent 23 years in a racist, anti-American, Marxist church would be such an ideologue.

Barry will destroy his presidency, and destroy the Democrat Party, in order to advance an agenda that is far more radical than the American people understood when they elected him.

Say hello to Obama’s little friend, the Cloward-Piven strategy.

Update, November 24:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 27% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President.
Fifty-two percent (52%) of Democrats Strongly Approve while 68% of Republicans Strongly Disapprove. Among those not affiliated with either major political party, just 16% Strongly Approve and 51% Strongly Disapprove (see other recent demographic highlights from the tracking poll).

Oh, oh, Democrats. It looks like independents utterly despise your Messiah.
