#179 – Sarah McLachlan – “I Will Remember You” – (1995/1999)

This song was originally released in 1995 on the soundtrack to The Brothers McMullen. A live version was recorded in 1999 and released on Mirrorball, only then becoming a top 20 hit. It solidified McLachlan as an amazing vocalist, along with her big hits from her 1997 album Surfacing: “Adia,” “Building a Mystery,” “Angel,” and “Sweet Surrender.”

I went back to the 90’s and made up a list of the 30 best movies from 1990-1999. Enjoy. I will not take any shit for placing The Godfather part III so high up on the list. It is an excellent motion picture and it makes me cry every time I see it.

One of my colleagues yesterday showed me a 1989 issue of Business India where he pointed out an ad of a long forgotten brand – Canada Dry . We passionately talked about the brand which we both liked.

Canada Dry was launched in India in 1995 . The brand ,from Cadbury Schweppes ,was a highly popular brand of softdrinks across the globe. Canada Dry was a much hyped brand because it was from the house of Cadbury. Cadbury Schweppes launched Canada Dry a

nd Orange Crush in the Indian market with much fanfare.

Canada Dry was a Champagne Softdrink. The brand has positioned itself as a champagne and the taste was different and refreshing.

The brand was also promoted heavily in various media. The ad featuring the snow and tiger brings back the nostalgia about this brand. The brand was positioned as a premium cooldrink . The brand gained immediate acceptance because of its association with Cadbury. The brand had the potential to become a premium softdrink brand in India .

But alas, the brand did not last too long in the market. In 1999 CocaCola took over the beverages business of Cadbury Schweppes and like GoldSpot and Limca , Coke killed this brand.

It is sad to see such brands being killed for no reason connected with customers. The only reason for Coke to kill these brands was to make way for Coke’s original brands. In the case of Canada Dry , the brand only had a negligible presence in the Indian market.

Look at the Indian market now – Is there a premium softdrink brand in India ? Neither Coke or Pepsi was able to create a premium softdrinks category in India. They have not even tried yet…….

Believe it or not, but Upper Deck made NASCAR cards back in the 90’s.  Their first NASCAR product was 1995 UD SP Motorsports.  Each box contains 32 packs with 7 cards per pack.  You can look for die cuts in every pack along with various inserts such as Speed Merchants, Speed Merchants Die Cuts, and Back to Back.  Upper Deck continued to make NASCAR products for about the next five years, but Press Pass ultimately won the battle.  Boxes of this stuff can be found for under $40.00.  Other Upper Deck NASCAR products contained more autographs, but when Press Pass unveiled their tire relics in 1996, the king of NASCAR trading cards had pretty much been determined.

El otro día visionamos la película “How to make an american Quilt” (Donde reside el amor), protagonizada por Wynona Ryder en 1995, en la clase de Introducción a la Terapia Ocupacional. El fin último era encontrar significado personal de esa película.

La película gira en torno a la vida de una chica Finn Dodd (Winona Ryder), la cual a sus 26 años, está terminando de hacer su tercera tesis para ser maestra, esta prometida con Sam (Dermot Mulroney), un carpintero.

El verano antes de casarse y para estar en un ambiente más propio, se va de vacaciones a Grasse (California), donde su madre la enviaba siempre tras la separación de sus padres a ver a su abuela.

En Grasse la esperan su abuela Hy (Ellen Burstyn), su tía abuela Glady (Anne Bancroft) y las amigas de estas Anna (Maya Angelou) y su hija Marianna (Alfre Woodard), Sophie (Lois Smith), Em (Jean Simmons) y Constance (Kate Nelligan).

Una noche tras empezar a construir la colcha nupcial de Finn, en el porche de la casa de su tía abuela Glady, la pregunta a esta y a su abuela Hy sobre si debería casarse, como es el amor para ellas etc… y empieza un vertiginoso viaje a través de historias pasadas sobre el amor y si merece la pena.

Una noche en el hospital su abuela Hy decide llamar a Arthur (Rip Torn) su cuñado, marido de Glady, y en el camino de vuelta a casa los dos primeros deciden mantener relaciones, cosa que descubre Glady, y va canalizando todo su odio tirando objetos a la pared y posteriormente pegándolos con cemento (gasta narices) en una habitación, para recordar cómo se quedo después de la incestuosa relación de su hermana Hy y su marido.

Posteriormente en un día de piscina con su abuela y las demás chicas a Finn se le presenta Leon (Johnathon Schaech) en forma de pulsión del “ello” y así nos introducen la historia de Sophie, que iba para nadadora, y de cómo conoció un día a su marido Preston (Loren Dean) y la relación de promesas y sueños incumplidos que tuvieron a través de los años de su matrimonio, hasta que un día el la abandono (y se supone, que la chica bonita y hermosa, paso a ser la abuela inaguantable debido a ese hecho). El intento durante su matrimonio darle pequeñas cosas a su mujer, como un pequeño estanque que era algo simbólico con la natación.

La misma tarde al volver a casa de su tía Glady, allí estaba Sam con un montón de papeles para preguntarla sobre cómo iba quedando la casa, y tras una discusión sin sentido, el se va enfadado y ella apesadumbrada por su marcha no para de llamar toda la noche hasta que contesta una jovencita con voz pizpireta. ¿La estaría engañando con otra?

La mañana después, al verla tan derrotada Em, la habla sobre su relación con el artista Dean (Derrick O’Connor) el cual la había engañado mil veces, con sus alumnas y con más mujeres, con la burda escusa de que un artista necesita expresarse, pero al igual que sabia todos esos engaños, no se sentía mal ya que amaba a ese hombre y amaba lo que la hacía sentir cuando estaba con él.

Nada más irse Em, aparece otra vez Leon en forma de pulsión a entregar unas fresas recién maduradas a Finn, al mismo tiempo que dentro Anna discute con Constance haciéndola ver que su trozo de retal del colchon, al usar flores amarillas, desentona con el resto. Y esta discusión motiva la cuarta historia.

Constance vivía con Howell (Richard Jenkins) el cual para que no estuviera tan sola le regalo a Chickie una perra caniche que hacia las delicias de todo el barrio donde Vivian, hasta que un día murió envenenada y Howell la enterró en la parte de atrás de su jardín, debajo de unas flores amarillas, lo que para ella era su lugar de refugio, donde reside el amor, en esa imagen. Y aun así, las chicas de la casa no quieren su trozo de retal porque desentona, al igual que ella, que al no creer en el luto tras la muerte de su marido, se deja intuir que ha tenido una aventura con el Dean “el artista”

Tras un tercer encuentro “fortuito” con el pecho palomo de Leon, intenta quedar con él, cosa que no hace tras hablar ella con su prometido Sam. Lo que desembarca en la historia de Anna la cual le cuenta el valor histórico y simbólico de las colchas. Y de cómo su tía Paulina cuando era criada, la contaba a la joven Anna las historias de su tatarabuela la cual buscando un lugar mejor, un día encontró a un cuervo y lo siguió para encontrar a un joven de color construyendo una cuadra. Y de cómo tras varios eventos fortuitos debido a la crisis económica de la época, la tía Paulina y ella se tienen que ir de la casa donde servían, tras haber mantenido Anna relaciones con un joven blanco amigo de la familia.

En su viaje en busca de un sitio mejor, la acogieron la madre de Glady y Hy, la cual la trataron como una tercera hija/hermana y la ayudaron a tener a Marianna.

Tras esto, tiene un encuentro poco fortuito con Leon, donde consuman lo que durante tres encuentros habían estado evitando, lo que desencadena en ella una histeria hormonal sobre si estaba bien o mal lo que había hecho. Lo que… como era de esperar, nos lleva a la última historia, la de Marianna y lo que para ella es el amor.

Nos cuenta que una vez en Paris, conoció a un hombre atractivo, mayor que ella que durante una tarde la hizo sentir la mujer más importante y más feliz del mundo. Tras todas esas conversaciones y divagaciones bohemias, ella pensaba que llegaría el momento de mantener relaciones con él, y al salir del bar donde estaban el dijo “yo ya tengo un lugar donde dormir” y la dejo un poema escrito. Lo que para ella, era donde residía el amor.

Tras toda este lio de historias y bagajes durante la historia de las abuelas y las chicas, aparece Sally (Kate Capshaw) la madre de Finn, diciéndola en resumidas cuentas, que después de veintimuchos años vuelve con su padre. Lo que descoloca a Finn y su mundo entero, ejemplificado con el “huracán” fortuito que aparece sobre Grasse y arrasa con todo el trabajo de su tesis de maestra.

Las chicas se unen para recuperar los papeles y poco a poco, recapitulan el día a día de esas vacaciones de Finn, y de cómo a pesar de todo, lo simbólico de la ocupación que estaban haciendo, que era la colcha de nupcias de la chica, no hacia más que recordar lo bueno que habían pasado durante toda su vida, pese a los engaños, muertes, dolor, traiciones etc… lo que al final quedaba de todo en el recuerdo y en corazón, era el amor que dos personas se tienen.

Quick info: Produced by Nippon Animation as one of the World Masterpiece Theater series. Directed by Kôzô Kuzuha. Based on a Switz novel called “The Black Brothers”.

Expectations, etc.: I don’t know a thing about this anime. It was in the batch torrent for an another anime so I decided to give it a try. I have absolutely no idea what to expect, though.

Impressions: It’s really hard to believe this anime was made in 1995. The animation looks ancient. I seriously thought it was made in the 70s. I guess Nippon Animation just wanted to keep their “trademark look”, but still… it’s not just the look. World Masterpiece Theater ended soon after this and then an another anime was made, so I guess they just didn’t have much of a budget.

Anyway, this anime had this feeling that good anime give off starting with the first few seconds up to the end of the episode. And the character was very likeable. Same thing for his dad and that red-haired girl. Though Romeo’s pet’s name (Piccolo) almost made me laugh there.

And, of course, going with the tradition of other old anime, nothing much happened in this episode. Even the fire, which obviously will be the thing that jump-starts the plot, will be covered in the next episode, so I guess I’ll just have to continue watching.

Dont ask me how I got from True Faith Synth-Pop to Goa trance, ive no idea Simon Cosford’s first outing as Hallucinogen and what a fucking album Twisted is. An absolute masterstroke of synth manipulation crammed into 60 minutes of pounding Psytrance beats. I know there’s any number of favourites but this bad boy always keeps me comming back, probably the growling buildup taking you to god knows where by the end of the track. Guaranteed to make me loose it, everytime.

Simon Posfords sound Defines Goa/Psy Trance, although he’s been involved in many other sucessfull projects “Twisted” remains the masterpiece. Faultless dark electronic music it’s the soundtrack to the furthest reaches of your imagination. Sumpremely powerfull, and sounds as fresh now (2006) as it did in 1994. Simon Posford deserves every bit of credit as one of electronic music’s pioneers.
This was a masterpeice when it came out. When the sample in ‘Shamanix’ told us “..the way i feel now, i’m not going to sleep for a year..i’m on fucking fire!” , we all felt it too when that warped acid line ripped in. And LSD..nothing more needs be said about what a great tune that was, and still is. In my opinion, some stuff on here hasn’t dated so well, but if you want to know what was happening in the underground in 1995, look no further than this.

Next imagine that you only sold these for the lowest price which your license allows of £197 Sterling each set (License Holders may never sell lower than this price to ensure that you all make maximum profits) in truth you will be charging nearer to £397 for each retail set sold, but for the sake of this example imagine they sell at £197 each. 

That would be a total income of: £19,700 from an average of just two sales at just £197 each per week (allowing for two no sale weeks)

 Consider that each 21 disc set requires 20 blank DVD-R discs and 1 blank CD-Rom disc to produce and that’s a total of 2,000 blank DVD-ROMs and 100 CD-ROMs required to manufacture and fulfill the orders. 

Using a site such as www.dvdshoponline.co.uk  (for this example – there are actually even cheaper sources) the DVD’s (which enable you to print direct onto the disc) would cost you £30 per 100 discs so for 2,000 DVD’S that’s a total of £600. 

Then you’d pay £10 for each 100 printable blank CD-ROM’s thus meaning that so far its cost you £610 to manufacture 100 sets of the entire package! 

Next you will need Two Ten Way DVD cases for each set and also one single DVD case for each set, a total of 200 ten way (£25 for 50 at example site shown) and 100 single DVD cases (£10 for 100 on example site) being required. 

That’s a total cost for cases for 100 sets of the package of: £110 thus bringing our running total so far to £720. 

Next each case will need a nice colour cover printing with each set needing three covers (as there are two ten way cases and a one single case) so that’s a total of 300 sheets of photo quality paper required and as 50 sheets costs £3-00 that’s a total of £18 for paper. 

Then there is ink which when you buy your ink cartridges cheap (via ebay etc) should cost you no more than the equivalent of 10p for each cover and lets say 5p max for each full colour DVD face which you print. So with 3 covers for each set and 21 discs that’s an ink cost for each set of £1-35 and a total cost of £135 to manufacture 100 sets. 

Finally you will need 100 large Padded jiffy envelopes to use sending the packages out to your customers which bought cheaply on net will cost you around 50p each so that’s a total of £50 to send out the 100 sets. 

And finally First Class or Airmail Postage to send out each package will need to be paid for so let’s say an average of £10 per set which is £1,000 to send out the example 100 sets being discussed here. In truth to send to UK they will be little more than £5 each first class but the rest allows for International postage costs. 

Add together the total of everything stated above and it comes to a figure of:£1923.

That means that each set to manufacture and send out to your customer costs you in this example £19-23p and even in this example where we are imagining you are only retailing them at £197 a set it gives you a total profit from each sale of: OVER – £177 

So with even only 100 sales in a year (average of 2 per week for 50 weeks) and even if you were only selling them at the bare minimum retail price allowed of £197 you’d still make by selling just 100 sets a profit of: £17,777 

Assuming that you have made the intelligent decision to make your one time payment to secure your Personal Limited Edition Platinum Master Resale Legal License to this set in full and as such will be paying just £1297.00, then even after getting back your original investment in this “Worst Case Scenario Example” you stand to make a BIG PROFIT OF – £16,480. 

And as this is a “worst case scenario” lets say you decide to buy a DVD duplicator which can burn Ten copies of each disc from your master each time without the need to use your computer. Well these can be bought online for less than £400 and will save you many hours of work. 

Oh and perhaps you need to buy a new printer that can be used to both print the covers and also the “labels” directly onto the discs then one of these can be got again online for less than £200. 

Even after investing into these two pieces of equipment you’d still in this “worst case scenario” have made a PROFIT OF – £ 15,880 and of course you’d still have all of the equipment which you can continue to use for years to come without any need for additional investment.

It’s because it’s by far the BEST one I’d ever had!

• Before 12 a.m. – 4 a.m.

Maikz, Bii, and I waited for November 8. Their stats were all for me. My classmates and even S. Mark texted me. Yeye, whm I shared the same birthday with,  also greeted me. Of course I wished him a happy birthday back.

• 11 p.m. – 7 p.m.

I spent almost the whole day at Medical City. Yes, it’s a hospital. :) Don’t think of it as bad luck, because I enjoyed being there. Everyone was there with me. (Including extended ones. LOL.) The place was awesome. The hospital had a Starbucks branch, a Haagen-dasz stand and Max’s in their huge foodcourt. The ambience was like that of an airport.

At one point, I once again, turned into a camera-whore. I borrowed my mom’s phone (since I didn’t have a decent one) and took about what seemed like a hundred selcas. No one stopped me. LMAO.

I had a mini adventure. I toured the hospital by myself which was fun and funny. Like a maze, you have to figure out the way through. It was kinda confusing. That was the best part. haha. Also, I bravely used the elevator by myself for the first time!!! Woohoo! I’m such a happy bee that day. I also bought a JavaChip frappe. Yummy.

• 7 p.m. – onwards

We got home at 7 pm. But the celebration was still not over! We ate more. My dad bought roasted chicken from a stall. My cakes were cool. I loved the Choco Mallows one. More people greeted me. I checked my FB account and my wall was full of Happy Birthdays and ILYs. Each one made me smile.

To sum it up, yesterday was my best day ever. Everybody remembered me!

En 1995 decidí seguir en la facultad por dos años más haciendo el Interpretariado.

Un Domingo de Septiembre una de las chicas de la iglesia invitó a un amigo.No chicas, no es el de la foto, ese es Mark Vanderloo. Pero sí me pareció muy lindo. Tenía ojos azules y cabello castaño. Se llamaba Martín y estudiaba sistemas.

Comenzó a salir con el grupo y aparentemente se interesaba por mi. Conversaba conmigo, me llevaba a casa en su auto. En Octubre comenzamos a salir. Parecía todo genial, cine, salir a cenar, a veces comía en casa, nos ibamos conociendo etc. etc.

Había algo medio extraño que me inquietaba. Una de mis amigas del grupo me ignoraba desde que había comenzado a salir con Martín. Realmente me parecía un absurdo pensar que ella estuviera celosa. Los viernes a la noche Martín acostumbraba venir a cenar a casa y luego de comentarle al respecto comenzó a contar un montón de cosas que supuestamente mi amiga le decía de mi y a decir que seguramente eran celos etc. etc. Realmente me parecía extraño porque conocía a mi amiga ya hacía ocho años y había cosas que no cerraban.

Eso no hubiera sido nada si nuestra relación al menos hubiera funcionado bien. Pero comenzó a sacar el tema de mi amiga y a inventar cosas que supuestamente ella decía de mi en cualquier momento sin que yo sacara el tema. Un día estando en casa me dijo delante de mi madre que no había terminado el secundario y por eso estudiaba sistemas en un terciario. No hubiera sido nada si desde un principio yo hubiera sabido como era la historia, si no hubiera mentido. Pero además de haberme mentido, no reveló la verdad en privado, sino delante de mis padres poniendome en una situación muy incómoda. De ahí en más se me hacía muy dificil confiar en el y tuvimos una pelea y casi acabamos pero decidimos continuar.

Llegó la navidad y realmente yo esperaba verlo después de las fiestas, apenas hacía dos meses que salíamos y el tema no venía muy bien. Sorpresivamente el 24 a la noche pasa a saludar con toda su familia, sus padres y su hermana. Si un chico se aparece un 24 de diciembre a presentar a su familia a tus padres pensarías que realmente va en serio, ¿no?

Quedamos en pasar juntos el primero de Enero, iba a pasar a buscarme por casa pero las horas pasaban y no aparecía.Finalmente lo llamé por teléfono y me dijo que había decidido dejarme y se había dado cuenta que yo no era la mujer para el y me dejó un verso de la biblia que no entendí y del que ya no me acuerdo.

Me fui de vacaciones y lloré algo, creo que más de rabía porque al final tendría que haberlo dejado yo primero. Finalmente a la vuelta de las vacaciones llegó el momento de hablar con la amiga que me ignoraba. Entonces supe que antes de salir conmigo el había estado jugando con ella. Me llevaba a mi casa a unas pocas cuadras de la iglesia los domingos y luego volvía a buscarla a ella. También la llamaba por teléfono y obviamente me criticaba a mí.

Para colmo de males el chico no tuvo mejor idea que volver a aparecerse los domingos en la iglesia y me decía que quería que siguieramos siendo amigos a lo que yo respondía con un tibio sí bueno y mucho fastidio. Nadie entendía muy bien que hacía todavía queriendo ser parte del grupo cuando había jugado con todos. Finalmente se me prendió la lamparita y encontré la manera de deshacerme de él. En casa habían quedado sus videos de Star Wars y creo que alguna otra peli. Puse todo en una caja y se lo envié por correo. Después de eso tuve la suerte de nunca más volver a verlo por la iglesia.

Volví a verlo en 1998 en el Boulevard Shopping de Adrogué cuando nos juntamos con unos amigos para mi despedida antes de partir en un viaje a Europa. Estaba con una chica y pasaba por delante de nosotros de la mano como una especie de provocación. Ya había hecho esa tontería cuando salía conmigo. Patético¿no? Yo pensé actuar como un adulto e ir a saludarlo pero mis amigos que tampoco le tenían simpatía alguna prefirieron que no lo hiciera.
