I could not be less of a Cher fan, but when this song came out, I didn’t know who Cher was and I was easily won over by the ridiculous electronic sound of this song.
98 Degrees had to suffer as “the other boy band” during the boy band explosion of the late 90s – well, none of them were technically bands. “The Hardest Thing” was the better of their two singles from 98° and Rising. The other was “I Do (Cherish You)” and was the star of the first Making the Video (remember how big that show was?)

5/5

Ficha técnica: O Grande Lebowski (The Big Lebowski) – 1998, EUA. Dir.: Joel e Ethan Coen. Elenco: Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Tara Reid, John Turturro, Flea

Paul Weller, The Brand New Heavies, Leftfield, The JTQ, Mica Paris, The Young Disciples, Alison Limerick, Max Beesley, Moloko and members of Jamiroquai are just some of the artists that turn up on this celebration of the 21st Birthday of one of the most influential independent labels of the 1990s and beyond. “London Street Soul” is a look at the heavily soul influenced output of Ed Piller and Gilles Peterson’s creation. Once Peterson left in 1989 Piller’s modernist vision embraced a gritty mix of soul, beats and retro influences learned in clubs such as Talking Loud at Dingwalls, but that at its height not only encompassed world-wide hits, but also ownership of London’s Blue Note nightclub – declared by Time Out in 2000 to be the club of the Millennium. The music on this compilation tells the story of the label from its earliest hits such as the beat-laden `I’m The One’ by D Influence and the Brand New Heavies’ `Never Stop’ – here in the chart-bothering David Morales 7″ mix – through to its recent top 40 hit by Andy Lewis and Paul Weller and on into this year’s great hope Twisted Tongue. Along the way we come across the very first production by Leftfied, Sandals’ `Profound Gas’ which is presented as a previously unreleased 7″ mix. Also here are a largely forgotten performance by Brit-soul diva Mica Paris in a wonderful duet with Mr Exe and most of the Young Disciple hooked up Max Beesley in the Subteranneans. Cloud Nine were Mark Brydon’s project immediately before the chart-topping Moloko, that fell apart when a sampling problem drove them apart.

The great Acid Jazz acts are all here, The JTQ with Alison Limerick on the modern soul classic `Love Will Keep Us Together’, Mother Earth with a Brendan Lynch radio mix of `Jesse’, and there are also several lesser-known gems that shine through such as the wonderful `Lovesick’ by the Nightrains, the jazzy soul of Pure Wildness and the Sun Ra space soul of the Emperor’s New Clothes. Also worth noting is the folk-funk on Jinrai who marked the start of a rebirth of the label in 2001.

The booklet is packed full of rare photographs from the label’s archive and an in-depth interview with Ed Piller, as he talks through the tracks on the album. It is the first of a three volume series that will follow with “London Street Beats” and culminate with `London Street Jazz’.

I am totally on board with the driving fast and the preference of Coke over that nasty oversweetened malted battery acid the jokers call Pepsi, but ferrets? Hell to the no. J-Mys had some when she was engaged to Senor R way back in the day (just saw J-Mys this weekend for the first time since my wedding day, it was really good and she looked beautiful, blonder but still gorge) and those ferrets stank up the whole upstairs of their house. Grody to the max.

___________________________________________________

Through The Trees. Man, when I hear just the name of this album I have some of my best music related memories because there are not many other records that got me so intense as this one. This was also the first album that got me in touch with The Handsome Family and I can still remember the day. It was one summer afternoon back in 2008 and I sat down with two friends of mine, Jan and Lance, to watch Jim White’s documentary Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus. And in this film, along with many other artists, The Handsome Family was featured with their song My Sisters Tiny Hands. But the strange thing was that I thought that their sound was special, but I was not that sure to start further investigations. But in the next days there was this strange feeling that I must listen to the music again – but still I wasn’t caught totally. It was Jan some weeks later who told me, that the actual band name was The Handsome Family and from this point on, I listend to their music – and to be exact to Through The Trees. I have to admit that it took me some rounds to get comfortabel but then I was like possessed with the album and I’m still. Every track on it seems to be a magical tune and Bret’s voice is so creppingly haunting – it’s hard to find the right words. Also the whole sound of the album was improved by 100 percent towards Milk And Scissors because they quit using the hard distorted guitar sound but totally include the keyboards. And, as I said in the article on Milk And Scissors, I’m not quite a fan of this instrument. But the both of them are freaking gods creating melodies and atmospheres that will never ever leave your brain again. Also they found a special and very unique way to combine country sound with what I call the typical Handsome Family sound. And this is also the reason why I include three tracks for you to listen to. Yet it is hard to choose just three of them! But because they are all so good I can’t make a mistake and that is quite something. I decided to include the opener (Weightless Again), the follow up (My Sisters Tiny Hands) and Cathedrals. I did so because the first two tracks are one of the best album beginnings I’ve ever heard. They sum up the whole album but still they are not the two smash hits wherefore the rest of the album must be worse. It’s the perfect middle ground and I just love it and love it even more. Cathedrals I had to include (right now I’m arguing with myself if I should rather include The Giant Of Illinois?…) because it is one perfect example of how they combine country with what maybe is the alternative in alt. country. Yeah, it sounds different but it’s is so familiar. What the heck, let the music speak for itself, I can’t do any better! But one track I need to mention seperately because it sounds different than the others. I’m talking about Down In The Ground – and this is one track you have to learn to love because the cawing vocals of Rennie are not everyone’s taste. But you can believe me when I tell you that this is no Big Bad Wolf 2 but rather a succsessful experiment that boots the whole album. So I think I talked enough – Through The Trees is a golden piece of musical history.

What UB40 was doing ten years earlier really kind of peaked in the mid-to-late 90s and this is one of the best examples of reggae-influenced popular music from the 90s. And it’s yet another example of a soundtrack-sourced song scoring big, this time from the Angela Bassett film, How Stella Got Her Groove Back.

The Pharaoh Sails To Orion,

I was in the newsroom when this story came over the police scanner. Four officers had opened fire on

I was in the newsroom when this story came over the police scanner.

Four officers had opened fire on a teenager. She was dead.

These details are not disputed:

She was drunk and stoned. She was passed out in a locked car with music blaring inside. The car was running. Police could not rouse her by banging on the windows. She had a semiautomatic pistol in her lap.

These details are murkier:

She was frothing at the mouth. She snapped awake when officers broke a window. Her hand moved toward the gun.

As the story gained fame, so did the side picking. Everyone sat in judgment over somebody in this story.

I’m on the side of the officers, who fired 27 shots into the Nissan Sentra and hit that 19-year-old with 12 of them.

Here’s why. This kid drank booze, smoked pot and went to a public convenience store with a loaded gun.

Using the same roads my loved ones and I use with babies in the back seats, she drove a vehicle so under the influence that she passed out and was unwakeable.

She sat armed and mentally altered where I might have been stopping with my children.

I’m going to come right out and say it. When someone makes those choices and becomes that level of a danger to the community, the officers should fire. Her rights, I believe, ended when she tried to take away everyone else’s right to safety in public.

I call open season on drunk people at gas stations with guns.

Apparently I’m in the minority.

I was also in the newsroom when the wire announced the four officers lost their jobs.

From/De: EA Need for Speed SHIFT Revs up with All-New Team Racing Mode and Legendary Cars REDWOOD CI

From/De: EA

Need for Speed SHIFT Revs up with All-New Team Racing Mode and Legendary Cars

REDWOOD CITY, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced an all-new Team Racing pack for the critically-acclaimedNeed for Speed SHIFT™. The content pack takes online racing to the next level with an action-packed new race mode and five renowned racing cars – all for free (Need for Speed SHIFT and Xbox LIVE® or PlayStation®Network account required). The Team Racing pack is the first downloadable content for Need for Speed SHIFT and will be available worldwide on December 1st on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system. The pack will be released for the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system on December 3rd in Europe and on December 10th in North America.

The Team Racing mode brings a fresh new challenge to SHIFT by completely redefining online racing. In this mode, two teams of up to six racers will battle against each other for online supremacy. Individual driving strategy and playing it safe won’t work as team tactics and 200 mph split-second decisions are required to push your team to the podium.

As part of the new content, players will also get access to these legendary racers:

1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 427

1967 Shelby GT-500

1969 Dodge Charger R/T

1971 Dodge Challenger R/T

1998 Toyota Supra Mark IV

The Pharaoh Sails To Orion,

Stunt Barenaked Ladies 1998 Reprise Ah yes, the Barenaked Ladies… ridiculous lyrics, fun music

Stunt

Barenaked Ladies

1998

Reprise

Ah yes, the Barenaked Ladies… ridiculous lyrics, fun music, and an overall good time. And of course, Stunt had a few hits on it, which never hurts either. This was the first album I picked up from them, obviously from the first track, which everybody and their mother knew. It instantly became one of my favorite albums, and still is up there on my list, although now, Everything To Everyone by BnL (that’s Barenaked Ladies… remember that, I’ll use it a lot cause I’m lazy) is their best offering, in my opinion.

So now onto what matters, the songs. What better way to start off than the huge hit single. Everyone either knew every lyric, couldn’t understand what the hell they were saying, or was under a goddamn rock. “One Week” is what I’m talking about of course. This song pretty much sums up what I expect from BnL on every album. Maybe because it was my gateway song to them, but it seems like most of their songs have an upbeat, ridiculous sound to them. I used to (and still do) know every single lyric to this song. In fact, the only part that ever tripped me up was ‘gotta get a set of better clubs, gotta find the kind with tiny nubs’. I still can’t get that exactly right…

So enough about that, onto “It’s All Been Done”. I still occasionally hear this song on the radio (what tiny, tiny amount I listen to it). Another cool song, albeit different than the preceding track. A bunch of stories about how everything with love and romance has been done, whether today, in the 13th century, or during the Roman empire. Or maybe it’s about how love can persevere for that long? I dunno, but it’s a damn good song.

The album slows down a lot for the next track, “Light Up My Room”. I never could get into this song until recently. Something about it put me off, but now I think it’s pretty good, and not a low point like I had previously thought. The guitar kicks in pretty bad-assedly at times, and it’s just a mellow, flowy song.

After that, the album keeps a slightly lower tone, with “I’ll Be That Girl”. This song has some really dark undertones, which is weird. It seems like it’s either about a girl committing suicide, what with the talk of hanging, and there being no tomorrow. It’s almost like the girl wants the attention of a guy, and would attempt suicide as a way to get the attention. Sadly, this could very well be a reality for some people. Still a good song though.

“Leave” is up next, and thankfully it’s more upbeat. There’s some very cool instrumental work in this song, some of it more subtle than others. And the do-do-do’s as a chorus is brilliant; it flows so well with the rest of the song. Also, harmonies! Hell yeah! And the solo is awesome too! This song is so good, and was definitely one of the first songs besides the hits I got attached to from the album.

“Alcohol”, ‘my permanent accessory’. This song possesses the best qualities of BnL’s awesomeness: ridiculous lyrics, upbeat, up-tempo music, and brilliant vocals. So a song about discovering how awesome life is when drunk… not much more to say here, other than great keyboard work to go along with the great vocals that always come from BnL.

“Call And Answer” slows it down again, but doesn’t slack on the vocals, or anything for that matter. A tame, simple drum beat, peaceful guitar, soothing vocals, it’s another mellow masterpiece here. (See what I did there with alliteration?) The one problem with this song is the length… it’s almost six minutes long, and the fact that it’s a slow song seems to make it longer. It still isn’t a bad song, but it also isn’t as good as “Alcohol” or “One Week”. Oh yeah, and if the vocals after about the four minute mark don’t sell you on Ed and Steve’s vocal ability, you’re seriously insane.

“In The Car” is a song of young love leaving someone unfulfilled. The guy because he couldn’t assert his insertion, and the girl because the guy left for good. Also, they were searching for something inside themselves, and instead “found” each other, if you know what I mean (Do you know what I mean?). Oh and the guy had a wet dream about the girl’s mom, and never told her. Seriously, the song is weird, but still good.

“Never Is Enough” is more classic BnL: strange lyrics, and upbeat music. It’s all about the stuff you don’t want to do with your life, and saying that never doing them is doing them enough for you. It’s something everyone can connect with. Some of the stuff they talk about is a little silly, but who the hell cares, that’s what you should be ready for with these guys.

“Who Needs Sleep?” is pretty much the first song I got addicted to after “One Week”. Yet more ridiculousness here, with some cool sound effects in the percussion beat. Anybody who has ever had trouble sleeping (yes, that includes you there) can connect with this song. Also, there’s more talk about contrast in relationships. The chorus is so awesome, with the whole band joining. And a man who has been awake wince WW2? That line still kills me… I don’t know where the hell they got that from. Definite candidate for best song on the album, with “One Week” and “Alcohol”. Oh and find the secret (not so secret) hulla hulla hulla. It’s great.

“Told You So” combines some ridiculous lyrics with some serious ones. A tough thing to do, but BnL does it really well. The guitar and bass weave together in a pretty cool way here. I seriously can’t figure out what this song is about… Some lyrics make me think it’s about holding grudges, some make me think it’s about being arrogant, some make me think it’s about being stubborn. Solid song nonetheless, and definitely a good listen.

Weird percussions again? But of course! “Some Fantastic (Ivory and Ivory)” is up next and I dunno where they got the parenthetical part of the title from, perhaps from two similar people being together? Seriously, though, there’s some stuff I wish I could do in this song. For example, making a machine to eliminate all the people in front of you in line or making a satellite and naming it after someone. Also, there’s one specific part that sounds kinda tame, but gets worse as it goes on: ‘Someday I will work with animals’ Okay, not too bad… ‘All the tests I’m gonna do’ Okay, where is this going, could be bad or good… ‘and when it’s done I’ll boil em down for glue’ Woah, wait what? I’ll leave this song with that thought.

The album closer, “When You Dream” is kinda upsetting. I never could get into this song, and I still can’t. It’s not the type of song I expect from BnL, and while they do a good job, it’s just not for me. Personally, it’s the low point of the album. That’s why I stop listening after the previous song.

So that’s all for Stuntby Barenaked Ladies. Overall, I’d rate this album a 7.5/10, because there’s too many songs that turn me off too much, and deviate from what I want to hear from BnL. If you’re looking to get into these guys, give this a listen, then listen to Everything to Everyone. Those are their two best albums, and they give the best overall picture of their whole spectrum of music.
