Después del anterior post, donde quedó demostrado que aún siendo el mismo tipo de memoria, es más potente dá mejores resultados la de 512M frente a la de 1Gb, en uno de los comentarios, un lector me lanzó una proposición, ¿y si las pruebas las haces con 2Gb en vez de con 1Gb de RAM?

Como aún tenía el tenderete montado y motivado por mi curiosidad, no me costó mucho localizar un módulo de memoria Kingston 2GB DDR3 1066 y repetir las pruebas anteriormente hechas.

Y yo pensando que al aumentar la memoria RAM no influiría en este tipo de test, ya que suponía que lo que se testea es el rendimiento de la gráfica.

Hace unos dias, hablando con un amigo acerca de un equipo que vió en la portada del folleto de publicidad de tontolandia, me comentaba que ese equipo estaba bien porque llevaba una tarjeta gráfica de 1Gb y le servía para jugar.
Yo intentaba explicarle que una tarjeta gráfica, dentro de un equipo tan económico, por mucho que fuese de 1Gb no podía ser buena, pero él erre que erre que si, que si era de 1Gb era buena y le iban a funcionar los últimos juegos. Que si mejor 1Gb que 512, que si DDR2 o DDR3. Al final, ante tanta insistencia, decidí dejarlo por imposible.

Y ayer, aprovechando un huequito que tenía, decidí meterme en faena.
Cogí dos tarjetas gráficas de gama media, una de 512M y la otra de 1GB para ver si entre éstas realmente hay mucha diferencia.

Después de las pertinentes pruebas, y confiando que la lógica me daría como ganadora del resultado la 9800GT 1Gb, queda demostrado que no, por lo que llego a una curiosa conclusión, que nada es lo que parece.

Probabil ati observat si voi limita per fisier atasat de la yahoo mail sau gmail, care de multe ori va irita. Acum, nu ca am vrea sa trimitem filme, muzica fara licente sau programe piratate, dar e folositor uneori sa avem limita dusa pana la 1gb per fisier.

Site-ul care ne permite sa trimitem fisiere de 1gb se numeste Transfer, este securizat si nu te obliga sa-ti faci cont (sa nu mai pomenim ca este romanesc). Vrei sa trimiti un film pe mail si ai banda mare de download/upload? Foloseste Transfer.

Nokia oficjalnie zapowiada premierę swojego nowego internetowego tabletu o nazwie N900, który zadebiutuje wraz z systemem Maemo 5, w okolicach października 2009 roku.

Fiński producent wydał notkę prasową, w której możemy przeczytać, że urządzenie pojawi się na wybranych rynkach w październiku 2009 roku, w cenie około 500 euro, co w przeliczeniu daje kwotę powyżej 2100 złotych. To niewiele mniej, niż przewidywana cena pierwszego netbooka Nokii o nazwie Booklet 3G.

Tymczasem w nowym urządzeniu typu Internet Media Tablet znajdziemy 3,5-calowy, dotykowy ekran o rozdzielczości WVGA, procesor ARM Cortex-A8, 1 GB pamięci RAM, 32 GB wbudowanej pamięci, łączność HSPA oraz WiFi, a także nowy system operacyjny Maemo 5, który zapewni wielozadaniowość, usługę Nokia Messaging oraz interfejs użytkownika wzorowany na modelu cloud computing.

Nokia N900 o nazwie kodowej Rover posiada również wysuwaną klawiaturę QWERTY, akcelerację grafiki OpenGL ES 2.0, pełną obsługę Adobe Flash 9.4, 5-megapikselowy aparat z optyką Carl Zeiss, podwójnym fleszem LED oraz funkcją geotaggingu. Gniazdo kart microSD umożliwi zwiększenie miejsce na dane do 48 GB.

ATI wants to be the first manufacturer to release DirectX 11 graphic solutions. The new HD5000 series is built on the HD4000 architecture but with DirectX 11 functionality. ATI is planning  to hold a conference to release their full “Evergreen” product line ranging from HD5870 to HD5450 on September 10 on historical USS Hornet aircraft carrier. These include:

HD5850/HD5870 (Cypress)-Single high performance gpu based by RV870pro and RV870XT chip  that will succeed HD4870/HD4890. $299 and $399 respectively. Speculations has it that ATI’s high end HD5870 1GB solution will be up to 70% faster than HD4870.

HD5650 (Juniper)-single performance gpu based on RV870 chip that will succed HD4850/HD4870 $199

HD 5650 (Redwood) – single chip mainstream gpu based on RV830 chip that will replace both HD 4650 HD4750  $149

OS Choices

Anyways, lets get started on this article. The G51vx is a quick machine that starts up in under ten seconds and gets you connected to the internet in under five more. This laptop features a fast-startup mode due to a secondary linux OS called “splashtop”. The secondary linux OS features a browser, skype, mail, and a music player. While I do not wish to be trivial, the linux mode is not very necessary, unless one simply requires a quick boot and nothing else. It should be noted that under the quick-boot mode, the pc operates at a slower speed than when everything is fully booted.

Design and Keyboard

Next I would like to talk about the laptop in general. The outside is white and in the upper center of the lid a logo of robotic origin resides. Look at the pictures to get the real feel of this. The inside of the laptop is all black, with chicklet style buttons on the keyboard. The keyboard itself feels sort of different too, since I am used to a full regular key keyboard. The other item is that this keyboard has a full number pad on the right, which I also feel is unnecessary. Asus could have added larger keys, but I am already getting used to the whole layout. The keyboard also features a backlit option, so for those of you who need to look at the keyboard to type (no offense), the light is there for you.

Gaming Performance

As it is marketed, the Asus G51vx is a gaming machine targeted towards, you guessed it, the gaming audience! As it is, I ran a few benchmarks and the results are as follows. I myself do not have 3dmark06, but according to forums, other owners have posted scores ranging from 8k-9k with stock settings.

On games, performance was always phenomenal, but on CPU-intensive games, performance was a tad lower than usual. For example, whilst playing Mirror’s Edge, I was able to turn up the settings to full, with V-sync on as well. The game played fluently for my two hour long gaming sprees. However, with Team Fortress 2, a more CPU intensive game, my fps decreased so I had to disable AA to get a decent frame rate above the fourties. Older games like Counterstrike Source worked flawlessly, usually racking up 120+ fps on full everything. Half-life 2 and all of its sequels ran at full detail fluently for my long gaming events. I must exclaim that Mirror’s Edge is the best looking game ever! With its vivid colors and beautiful city, the game looks amazing on this laptop. I was blown away by this machine’s output.

Crysis, the gamer’s current benchmark, plays at full detail at 20-40 fps on stock drivers. However, according to forums, the laptop can overheat while playing this game on full detail, so a laptop cooler is a must for a notebook with a GTX 260M inside.

In the future, I forecast that this laptop will be able to play most of the games on full detail until the middle of 2011, when some crazy new GPU architecture will force this beast down. Currently I am waiting for Assassin’s Creed 2, Left for Dead 2, Splinter Cell Conviction, and the Star Wars Online RPG.

Is it Worth it?

YES! This laptop has what every gamer needs to play games for the next two and a half years! You will not find many other laptops with this graphics card and this price point. Other systems to look at would be the Gateway P-7805u or the Asus G71GX, if you are into larger screens. Personally, being a college student, I bought this so I could do my work and relax when I had nothing to do. This laptop will last me the next five or so years.

Update: I just tested the laptop temperatures with a TARGUS laptop cooler and without. It seems the cooler doesn’t really help the laptop temps, except for the hard drive.

Ever heard of SD HC (Secure Digital High Capacity)? Welp, SD XC (Secure Digital eXtended Capacity), is supposedly the Next Gen of SD HC.

Recent reports (which by the way have been proven true already) say that the NEW SD XC will outperform its older generation far better and mightier than the HCs. Simply put, more speed, more capacities. How big, you say? Well, it starts at 32GB (the highest its been in todays market) to a whopping, ground-breaking, breath-taking 2TB !!! YEEESSSHHHH… 2TB!!! You may never have to empty your SD cards EVER AGAIN! Well this might not be much of interest to Photographers, it is most definitely pointing towards the Movie business… simply put, more memory = more movie.

At today’s rate, a 4GB card can record a 720p video for 2 hours… now think what a 2TB card can hold! Only problem they need to solve now is the battery!

SD might be big News enough but you do know it has a sibling, right? The mini SD? Well… heh heh… its getting an upgrade too. Brothers unite! The mini SD Card will as well have the capacities of 32GB – 2TB. Think how many music lovers and cellphone enthusiasts there’ll be when this unravels… I’m guessing that when it’s released, it’ll be of a higher but reasonable price but as the market goes on… i’m pretty sure a terabyte of memory will be a common thing to know.

Macro di una memoria da 1Gb non più funzionante del mio Apple Powerbook G4.

Ho scattato questa foto in una serata piovosa di Giugno, tra un paragrafo e l’altro della tesi per la laurea specialistica. Era da un po’ di tempo che non scattavo una foto utilizzando la mia scatola di luce fai da te, che ho costruito secondo la filosofia della diy photography. Ho approfittato della prima pausa (cena esclusa) che mi sono concesso da mezzogiorno per scattare qualche foto.

Ho acceso le due lampadine fredde che utilizzo per illuminare la scatola di luce, dall’alto e da destra, e ho posizionato il flash SB-800 all’interno puntandolo verso l’alto e attivandolo in wireless – da poco mi sto impratichendo con il sistema Nikon CLS. Ho bilanciato il bianco scattando sul cartoncino bianco che riveste l’interno della scatola e ho fatto qualche scatto di prova per verificare le ombre. Purtroppo non ho ancora un cavalletto, perciò ho dovuto scattare a mano libera… una gran fatica per riuscire a mettere a fuoco un oggetto tanto piccolo! Causa la profondità di campo ridottissima e la mia mano ancora un po’ incerta – sì, il prossimo acquisto sarà quasi certamente un bel cavalletto!
Ho sviluppato il RAW in Capture NX limitandomi a sistemare i livelli, ad aggiungere una leggera curva a S per aumentare il contrasto e ad aumentare leggermente la saturazione. Infine ho ridimensionato l’immagine a 1024 pixel di larghezza, ho applicato una leggera maschera di contrasto e ho convertito il profilo di colore in sRGB. L’ultima azione è stata l’esportazione in JPEG alla qualità massima (12) con la modalità baseline optimized.

My 1st generation, 1gb iPod shuffle died.

I’ve had it for years, and LOVE it. Have no idea where to find a new one (and yes, I still want a 1st gen shuffle).

It had lots of sentimental value (first and only iPod, took it all over Japan, 2 years of college, took it running, traveling, etc), so while I accept that its gone, I still want an old one, not some new-fangled nano mess.

If you know of one, or even better, of someone who wants to gift me one, I’d be super grateful! With the repairs my car needs and my sporadic employment, I can hardly justify buying an iPod, but it feels super strange to be without music.

Un nuevo oponente salió en el camino para la popular Kindle de Amazon, esto porque la francesa, Booken, ha lanzado un nuevo e-Book, pero esta vez, uno tamaño bolsillo.

Bajo el nombre de Cybook Opus, la compañía informó que este aparato fue especialmente pensado y diseñado para que entre en un bolsillo, haciéndolo más fácil de transportar. Además, de contar con una resolución mayor que todos los e-Books.

En tanto, entre sus características están:

Memoria interna de 1GB.
Soporte para archivos ePub y PDF.
