I realized a long time ago that men and women have different engines when it comes to certain activities. For example, get me in a room where there’s a hint of competition or something to win & my senses are heightened and I’ll fight until I come out on top. My wife? She’d rather hangout and talk with those watching on the sidelines. But get my wife in a building with stores that are lined up in a straight line with red signs marked “sale” and she’s ready to have at it. Me? I’m the guy that sits on the nearest flat surface until we’re ready to leave. All that to say…we went shopping today.

While shopping, I ran in for a quick respite at the Apple Store. I know I won’t ever buy anything, but just being surrounded by cool technology inspires me. I was hovering around the section where they sold the new magic mouse, which happened to be sold out. While asking about when they were going to receive a new shipment of the mice, I was eavesdropping on a conversation close by. They were talking about the days when 30gb Hard Drives were the sickest thing on the market and how we find 1tb Hard Drives as a default on our computers now.

That led me to think, “When did we ever find the need to have 1tb of information on our computers?!” But the dude was right, without 1tb of Hard Drive space, we’d be hard pressed to have anything on our computer these days. We just have so much crap on these things. They hold our entire lives on a small spinning disc. And in one way or another, our lives have grown from dreaming about 30gb of stuff to needing 1tb of space. We’ve amassed so much junk, haven’t we? I can barely fit my life into my 160gb Hard Drive currently, but I remember a day when I didn’t know what to do with a 30gb computer. My how times change, but more poignantly…my how our lives are full of junk.

Este parece ser el descubrimiento de un grupo de científicos al dar con un material especial que podría permitir una capacidad de almacenaje cercana a un terabyte dedatos, en algo tan pequeño como una uña. El material, una mezcla compleja de metal con cerámico, podría superar a los mejores ejemplos de tecnología basada en silicio que se conocen hasta la fecha.

Ya es algo bastante común tener algunos gigabytes de almacenamiento en algo que no es mucho más grande que un llavero, pero la tecnología que nos permitiría superar la barrera del terabyte manteniendo esas escalas, todavía se encuentra en fase experimental. Uno de los ejemplos más prometedores parece ser este nuevo material desarrollado por ingenieros de la Universidad Estatal de Carolina del Norte, que en teoría podría almacenar hasta unterabyte de datos en un tamaño tan pequeño como el de la uña de un dedo humano. Lo más sorprendente sobre este material es que el almacenamiento de información no sería el único campo en el que podría representar un avance radical, sino también en la eficiencia de los motores de combustión interna, y en la reducción de calor generada por los semiconductores.

El material fue creado a partir de un procedimiento conocido como “dopaje selectivo”. En electrónica, el dopaje consiste en la introducción de impurezas en un semiconductor para alterar su comportamiento. Trabajando a escala nanométrica, los ingenieros han logrado introducir impurezas de níquel en óxido de magnesio. El resultado son pequeños grupos de níquel de un tamaño no superior a diez nanómetros cuadrados. Esto representa una reducción de tamaño de un 90 por ciento en comparación con las técnicas actuales. Los ingenieros utilizaron el ejemplo de que, con esta técnica, un chip que normalmente almacenaría 20 gigabytes, podría multiplicar su capacidad por 50 si fue hecho de este material especial.

Básicamente, este nuevo proceso inyecta propiedades metálicas a un cerámico, lo que abre la puerta a otras aplicaciones además del almacenamiento de datos. Se han teorizado “motores cerámicos” que podrían soportar el doble de temperatura de los motores actuales, llevando su rendimiento hasta niveles cercanos a los 34 kilómetros por litro, un nivel que ni siquiera los coches híbridos más avanzados pueden alcanzar en la actualidad. Como si eso fuera poco, también se habla de mejoras en la conductividad térmica del material, algo que sería muy valioso en la recolección de energía solar, y también de avances en la espintrónica, una tecnología que aprovecha el espín de los electrones para obtener energía. Hasta aquí, este material suena como algo casi mágico, pero todo indica que habrá que esperar un buen tiempo para que alcance una etapa lo suficientemente avanzada como para considerar una aplicación comercial.

Here we have some unboxing pics of a Seagate 1Tb external hard drive. I was contemplating between the Seagate and the Western Digital but since the WD was out of stock I went with the Seagate. It should be known that the WD comes with a 3 year warranty whilst the Seagate only has a 2 year limited warranty, so if you might want to take this into account when purchasing. I believe they both sell for around the same price. There is no software to install and works like any other hard drive, simply drop and drag.

This is a 3.5″ inch drive and requires power in order for it to operate. It spins at 7200rpm and runs comparatively quick to another external hard drive I use. Sorry guys but I won’t be posting any speed tests or anything like that. One thing that I noticed and particularly liked was that there were different socket power plugs for use on every continent all over the world. This would come particularly handy when you travel overseas and take your hard drive with you. There is a small green led next to the Seagate logo that flashes when the device is on.

The hard drive will automatically turn on when plugged into your computer and will turn off when you safely remove it. The cable supplied is a mini usb to usb cable and is sufficiently long as is the power cable. I personally find the hard drive sleek and attractive. The material used on the casing does not attract fingerprints, however the Seagate drive must be positioned flat and cannot be used upright unlike the WD My Book. Overall, I have no gripes with this device and recommend it to anyone looking for a no fuss drive that does what it is supposed to do at a good price.

So Roxy’s computer took a massive dump and the resident IT Guy (Mitch) reccomended we backed everything up and re-installed stuffz.

So off to Officeworks for some shopping – guaranteed best price so you can’t really go wrong – and picked up a Seagate 1TB External Hard Drive.  500gb a piece, and there’s plenty of storage for both of us; time to make my own machine a little faster too.

Linkstation Quad

My Network Attached Storage arrived Friday despite the on-and-off rain; no one does shipping better than UPS. I purchased a Buffalo 4TB Linkstation Quad from B&H Photo to augment the 2TB of hard disk space I currently have clustered in several external and internal hard drives.

Automated backup capability is vital

Purchasing a NAS was a no-brainer for me. First, the centralized storage source aspect. All client files (and important personal files) can now reside on one set of mirrored and striped (RAID array) drives in one central location that I can get to from my desktop, laptop, or my wife’s desktop. Gone now is the messing around with Windows network sharing across machines, and granting file permissions to groups and individuals. BTW, it supports Apple Macs too.

Second, automated backup capability is vital. Forget about batch files and Windows scheduler to xCopy files from your C drive to your external disks. When it worked it was good but it hardly worked. That put my files in jeopardy so I had to remember to manually execute the batch files.

Setup

It was a snap to connect the NAS to the network and configure it. The unit comes with a network cable, a power supply, and free copy of Memeo AutoBackup. Included documentation is a thin start guide and online documentation. Mine is in Japanese. It might as well be non-existent. If the extent of your computer use is turning it on and surfing the web, the instructions will get your unit connected to your lan but not much more. The good thing is that once software is installed and the unit is connected, the interface to talk to the unit is a web page. I liked that and I liked the fact that it’s pretty customizable. Oh, a bonus for me: it comes with a built in print server which means logistically I can move the printers off my desk creating much needed room. It has a BitTorrent server for streaming media too.

The Linkstation is factory configured to perform in RAID 5 configuration. This means that your 4TB unit will really have about 2.8TB worth of capacity. I am debating rebuilding and configuring mine in a RAID 10 configuration which will leave me with about 1.8TB worth of capacity. The trade-off is that I should see faster performance and better fail-over ability. That kind of space loss hurts; I will have to weigh the security and fail-over differences before I commit to a RAID set.

Oh, just an FYI, the unit’s drives are not hot-swappable so if one or more disks go down you’ll need to power down the entire unit to replace them. And another FYI, the 4 1TB drives included in the unit are Western Digital Caviar Green drives spinning at 7200rpm. Very nice.

Conclusion

In the end I am satisfied with my Buffalo 4TB Linkstation Quad. I have read on numerous boards about how Buffalo products are either horrible or great. Right now, I am leaning towards great.
