Even stranger were the Kazon ships which can’t be unless we somehow end up in the Gamma quadrant as part of a mission. Also on the federation side there is a Sovereign class Battlecruiser and a Miranda class Light cruiser. there are many more ships but these are the ones that stood out in the crowd.

Robots, Star Wars, and even dirigibles used as floating combat platforms were common topics of conversation. Sometimes I would find myself cringing at the depths of nerdiness being discussed; other times I would join these conversations and contribute to no end.

Much like those overheard conversations in college, The Geekbox often veers off course into morally questionable material due to different guests. I find this to be unfortunate as the rest of the podcast is of high (nerdy) quality. However, just as I would in college, sometimes it is best to leave the dinner table (ie: fast-forward) if things sink too low.

At the end of the day, The Geekbox is like coming home to a group of old friends you know and love, flaws and all.

The tattoo itself was done by Shannon Johnson of Ramesses’ Shadow Tattoos in Memphis, TN. I have nothing but the best of things to say about Shannon and Kevin, they are utterly fantastic. They aren’t covered in weird piercings and neither have tattoos themselves. They are funny and utterly without ego. I felt comfortable.. almost at home there. And Shannon fixed the awful mess that the other place did to my arm. The wait time is long but seriously, why would you be in such a hurry for something so permanent that you couldn’t wait? I would never go anywhere else.

In what has been dubbed as the end of an era by many gaming enthusiasts, it’s with a rather small lump in my throat that I must inform you that both Garnett Lee and John Davison are leaving the Listen Up Podcast. Their final show is today 10/09/2009, and goes for a whopping 3 hours – but it should be an epic show. Even if your not a regular listener, you should really check it out. John Davision will be joining GamePro as “executive vice president of content for the company’s editorial initiatives.” Garnett will be joining GameFly media as editorial director, which includes Shacknews.

You can of course grab the episode here on the Listen Up mini site.

I felt like it was necessary to write up a short post to show my appreciation for the guys at 1Up for producing what has been my favorite podcast for years. As many members of the games press know by now, Garnett Lee has left 1Up in favor of a new position of editorial director for GameFly Media. I wish him the best of luck in his new endeavor and I’m confident he is ready for such a large responsibility.

The 1Up Yours podcast was really the first podcast I ever listened and subscribed to. This was before I realized I could download podcasts on iTunes and was using my PSP to grab the feeds. I would put on my headphones and listen with great joy every Friday while I was tucked into bed. On more than one occasion I fell asleep and dreamt about the games they were talking about. As embarrassing as it is to admit this, I also had dreams that I was right there with the crew talking about games.

Even though the podcast crew went through a number of personnel changes, Garnett was always there moderating the show with great precision. He did an excellent job of keeping things on track and making the other guys elaborate on their opinions. This helped to produce some of the most well thought out conversations about gaming I have ever heard. In fact, it was because of 1Up Yours that I got involved in podcasting.

I never felt like I knew the personalities of game writers until I started listening to this podcast. They were the reasons why I frequent 1Up and follow the projects of former 1Uppers such as John Davison’s (whom is now at GamePro) work at WhatTheyPlay. In a way I guess you could say 1Up Yours was my gateway drug to podcasts.

I’m going to miss downloading the show to end my week as its become one of my pastimes. I can’t wait to see what the new show is going to be like. I also am looking forward to listening to the inevitable podcast project Garnett creates. Godspeed Garnett, and thanks for the great conversations.

Coming to us from Philly, this is the latest in the Hellfire Graffix (HLFRGRFX) Deconstruction Skate Deck Series. Number 4 to be exact. All of the skate decks in this series are designed by hand and intended as wall art…..because let’s face it, they’re just too sweet to tear up and this one is no exception. The 1UP! Deck incorporates Hellfire’s distinct Street Art style using drips, runs and overspray along with a homage towards the old school days of 8-Bit Pixel Perfect Gaming, as indicated by the Super Mario-style Mushrooms. Bright, colorful and straight up ill. Just how we like it. This is a full-size skate deck made of 7ply Canadian Maple. Like all the other Deconstruction Skate Decks, this one is available for sale and comes with a hand signed COA. As it’s original Artwork, it’s priced as original art. The 1UP! Deck is going for $250. If you’re interested in it, send us an email and we’ll tell you how to contact the artist: VisualArtAssassination@Gmail.com

Grime music has always had a healthy fascination with violence and videogames. Boy Better Know membe

Grime music has always had a healthy fascination with violence and videogames. Boy Better Know member JME is renowned for his love of the virtual platform, frequently infusing his lyrics with playful references to Street Fighter and Call Of Duty. ‘Chillin’ Wid Da Mandem’, Dizzee’s romantic ode to his compatriots on latest album ‘Tongue ‘N’ Cheek’, details a particularly boisterous Pro Evo sesh.

Grime’s heady combination of brutal lyrics and synthesized Gameboy beats is almost poetic; a metaphor for how modern consumerist lifestyles and digital entertainment have eroded our sense of empathy, understanding and respect for fellow man and replaced it with a ‘carrot-on-a-stick’ pursuit for 1up-manship.

God I’m good…

And so, on that light and refreshing note, allow me to introduce the number one contender for Grime’s poet laureate, P-Money.

Hailing from Lewisham, South-East London, P-Money’s responsible for some of the most exciting Grime music to have been released this year. His debut mixtape ‘Coins to Notes’ – made available for free download in early 2008 – was widely applauded by Grime fans for it’s diversity in sound and constantly high level of barring. Peppering tracks such as ‘Back in Time’ and raucous street anthem ‘What Did He Say?’ with breathless tenacity, P’s skippy flow was lauded as one of the most exhilarating in the scene.

Since then, P-Money has made 3 releases which, despite some solid features, failed to excite as much his debut. ‘Coins to Notes’ follow-up ‘A Little Back Then With Now’ was exactly what the name suggested and featured a collection of P’s previous hits as well as snippets from the brooding, although ultimately disappointing ‘P-Money Is Power’ album.

His third and latest release however, ‘Money Over Everyone’, signals a return to previous form and is going down a storm in the scene, placing him firmly in the top third of the Grime MC league table.

Don’t just take my word for it. Giveaway paper The Metro did a feature on him last Friday, and lead single ‘1up’ – his Super Mario themed banger (produced by Royal T) – is all over the radio. On it, P displays an aggressive, yet playful wit that is a breath of fresh air in a scene that takes itself too seriously.

P-Money – 1up

It is unashamedly juvenile and all the more appealing for it. Other standout tunes from the CD include ‘Left the Room’ and ‘Fruit and Veg’, both of which are irresistibly catchy and draw P’s larger-than-life persona to the fore. With Funky grabbing all the attention and MC’s flocking to commercial markets, it’s good to see P-Money secure a niche that is hard, fast and wholeheartedly Grime.

P-Money’s appeal therefore, much like Mario after consuming a mushroom, can only get stronger.

P-Money’s CD ‘Money Over Everyone’ is available from HMV and iTunes.

If you’re looking to become a gaming journalist, this one is for you. Being a games journalist

If you’re looking to become a gaming journalist, this one is for you.

Being a games journalist is great, there is no denying it. But it’s not all about playing games early before they’re released or going to some special event for a preview of the game, stuff like that. Sometimes, you have to really put your backbone in.

If you can hack it, great, but you’ve only gone through one obstacle. If you can’t, there is your answer.

First off, you have got to have the spirit and determination to be a journalist in the industry. You can’t just pick and choose when you want to do the odd article then and there if a site heres you, then fuck off the face of the Earth, never to be found again.

It’s people like me who hate that. I’m sure several editors of sites like myself with GOONL!NE has experiencedthat, of course I have. I also know a couple of people, including my old boss at PS Lifestyle Anthony Severino, who will try to get the best out of someone as best as we and that person can.

However, if you work for sites like GO, PS Lifestyle or any other site, be lucky its just us. Come to the big guns and you slack, be that in your writing and picking and choosing whenever to write, and you’re gone just like that.

But lets say your writing is fantastic, lets say you arrive on time to do a day shift, what then? Well, you need to hack it then, try and take it through the long haul. If you’re wamt to show your dedicated, show it emphatically by doing trade events like E3, GamesCom or Tokyo Game Show if your boss asks you to.

Not only you get brownie points, but it will help you better as a writer. But beware: trade events are trouble for anyone covering them, they will take its toll on you. How? In the case of E3 and TGS, insomnia, sleep deprivation, stuff like that. These are some of the sacrifices you have to make as you write for the website of employment.

And do overdo it. Seriously: space out your shifts – trade events or not (unless needed for a livetext) – and just do the amount of time you were given, from 9am – 6pm BST for example. If you want to stay on and write, stay on. But only, and I mean only, if you feel your up for it. And even then, dont stay past it too long.

E3 was a nightmare for me, having done it for GOONL!NE this past summer. It really was great to do in terms of announcements and stuff, but doing assets like screens and trailers, as well as adding in the technical difficulties of our livetexts (first day was bad, really bad alone) really took the strain on me.

And then, doing GamesCom a couple of weeks ago for VG247 was something of an experience, both to me personally and as a journalist.

Simply put – start out slow and dont slack. Work on a site like GO or PS Lifestyle, work your way up from there by becoming a better writer. Dont jump straight to the big sites like Joystiq, just work your way up gradually until you feel your ready to apply for a job at the big guns if they have a listing going.

Also, if you name your favourite websites, try and find three writers from three of your favourite sites in each way they perform at, such as News, Editorial articles or just being a Managing Editor full stop. That said, if you want to go for another writer for a site not in your top 3, it’ll still work. I can easily name Eurogamer, Kotaku and IGN as my favourite three sites.

However, only two of the staff from two of them site I can name as being the writers I’d really look to, both in inspiration and how excellent their work is.

Tom Bramwell (Editor in Chief, Eurogamer) – Quite potentially the most influential journalist in all of UK gaming. Make no mistake. He has run Eurogamer.net with a very tight fist since taking over a while back. It’s his writing and his articles that I hope will make me a better editor for GOONL!NE.

Brian Crecente (Managing Editor, Kotaku) – Say what you like about Kotaku, Crecente doesn’t fuck about with the site. It’s his firmness and responsiveness with following up on a news story if it needs to be followed up on that makes him one of the finest editors in the industry.

Plus, it has to be said – he had fucking balls to go toe to toe with Sony after the blackballing over Home at GDC 2007.

Patrick Garrat (Managing Editor, VG247) – Bramwell and Crecente are both great journos, but this is the man who has been proclaimed as “the hardest working journalist” in the industry – and I can vouch for that.

Pat is the most hard working person I have ever had the pleasure of not only knowing, but also to work with as well. As well as that, he is the man who I’d like to tag as “the man with the megatons”. As in anything that comes his way, chances are they are a megaton. That said, any news tip he tends to get is nothing short of right.

So, what are my main tips as to become a gaming journalist?

1 – Start your own blog or site. It doesnt have to be fancy, but just somewhere you can start pracising from. Nothing more, nothing less. Try to hone your skills as a writer and do the best as you can with it, nobody is perfect with it. Hey, neither am I.

And for the love of god, dont right liek ah tenn yeer old keed. If you do, apply for a job here.

2 – Once you have your writng skills sharpened to the best of your abillty, just try and keep on writing until you either find a job on a small site or you’re offered a job on a small site. It’s not much, but it’s a start.

3 – Be dedicated, but dont over do it.

4 – Be prepared to make sacrifices. They’re not nice, but if you want to last in the industry, it has to happen.

5 – It may get serious most of the time, but try to have fun at the same time.

Editing GOONL!NE has been a set of ups and downs. Sometimes, all I have wanted to do is walk away from the site and just leave it to decay, I’ll admit that now. But that said, I wouldn’t change it for the world, no way. It’s been awesome and I hope the good times continue to roll.

And while it is a dictatorship in reality (okay, maybe I am lying just a little bit), working with Pat and 1UP vet Steph Nunneley on VG247 is just awesome. GamesCom was a blast working on the site, and I hope this will last a good while to come. They are awesome beyond belief.

And that is the insides of how to become a gaming journalist.
