Lagunatic just came across a post on a message board telling parents to ask their kids some questions. I thought it would be a fun idea to do the exercise with Julian, my almost four year old.

Here are the results:

1. Why are there Mothers?

Because, um, there’s only one.

2. Why are there Fathers?

Um, I don’t know – you tell me.

3. How are Mothers made?

I don’t know how.

4. How are Fathers made?

I don’t know.

5. What ingredients are Mothers made of?

Screws.

6. What ingredients are Fathers made of?

Hair.

7. Why do you have your Mother and not some other Mother?

Because you’re my favourite mommy! Is that a good answer?

8. Why do you have your Father and not some other Father?

Because I love my dad.

9. What kind of little girl was your Mom?

Um, you were like my mommy!

10. What kind of little boy was your Dad?

He played with big boy toys

11. Why did Mom marry Dad?

Because you like to.

12. Why did Dad marry Mom?

Because he loved you. Is that a great answer?

13. What did your Mom need to know before she married Dad?

You needed wings.

14. What did your Dad need to know before he married Mom?

He needed to know that he loves you.

15. Who is the boss at your house?

YOU are!!

16. What’s the difference between Moms and Dads?

Dads are a guy and grils (sic) are a girl.

17. What does Mom do in her spare time?

She does um, winter.

18. What does Dad do in his spare time?

He, um, plays outside, playing with me, playing soccer, and football, and golf, and touching your necklace, and poking your eye out, and pulling your hair and poking your cheeks out.

19. What would it take to make Mom perfect?

Umm, be gentle.

20. What would it take to make Dad perfect?

Um, he can, ummm, pull his ears out.

21. If you could change one thing about Mom what would it be?

um, SQUIRREL!!!

22. If you could change one things about Dad what would it be?

Um,, I just like when he plays with me outside.

Basically, my son sees me as the half-blind half-bald screwball wife of an ear-less Saskwatch who needs to be more gentle. Oh, and he’d rather I was a squirrel. With wings.

And you people wonder why I drink.

I told you guys that I was going to jump back into the TTM side of the hobby soon. I should have a series of posts in the coming weeks covering my attempts to bring home a few more autographs for my collection.

And in addition to the autograph collecting, I am also going to see if I can get a few more players to do my ‘20 Questions’ interviews.

So here goes, 3 normally very good signers are getting packages from me. In the package are handfuls of cards for them, a few that I would like to have returned back to me signed, and the interviews.

We’ll see how this transpires…

Package #1 goes to: Bobby Bonilla

#2 has been sent to: Shawon Dunston

And #3 is being mailed to: Mark Grace

Meet Melissa 1. What year are you at NYU & what is your major (if you have one)? Freshman in

Meet Melissa

1. What year are you at NYU & what is your major (if you have one)?
Freshman in Liberal Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences.

2. Where are you from?
Miami, FL

3. How long have you been dancing?
Since I was wee little (age 3).

4. What was the worst part about Tryouts?
The second day of clinics where I rehearsed until 2 am and then woke up at 6 am for the audition. I hadn’t done that in a little while!

5. What was the best part about Tryouts?
Performing in front of the panel of judges.

6. Do you have any special talents?
I’ve trained with a ballet company since I was 3, so I’m partial to technique, flexibility, precision, stage presence, and dancing gracefully.

7. How would your friends describe you?
Optimistic, friendly, driven, too organized, happy, and, oftentimes, I’m told, cute.

8. When is your birthday?
April 28, 1991

9. What is your favorite section in Tryouts (jazz, pom, or hip hop) & why?
Jazz. My strengths are in technique so it was the most comfortable for me.

10. What is your favorite style of dance?
Lyrical, contemporary, and ballet.

11. Why do you love to dance?
Since I was 3, dancing has always been part of my life: the classes, the rehearsals, and the performances. In high school when I joined the dance team, the girls and my coach became my second family and I couldn’t imagine what those 4 years would have been like without all of the great times we had during everyday practices, 8-hour rehearsals, state and national competitions, and all the time we spent together. When it seems like everything around me is changing, dance is something that is always constant. Through dance I’ve discovered so much about myself not only as a dancer, but also as a person. I wouldn’t be me without it.

12. What would people be surprised to know about you?
My family and I like to eat ice cream or frozen yogurt when it’s really cold outside, which makes no sense since we’re from Miami.

13. What is your favorite quote?
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.”

14. How did you feel when you got the phone call from the team telling you that you made the squad?
I was in the shower and ran out when I heard my phone ring! At first I was sad because it seemed like I didn’t make it, but when I heard I had made it I was so happy and couldn’t wait to tell my family when they got here for parents weekend (after I cleaned up the water I dripped everywhere).

15. Are you excited to have made the ’09-’10 Team!?
Of course!

Meet Kelly

1. What year are you at NYU & what is your major (if you have one)?
Sophomore at CAS, thinking of double majoring in Environmental Studies and Metropolitan Studies and minoring in Public Health…or I might transfer to Gallatin and concentrate in Urban Public Health and the Environment.

2. Where are you from?
I’m from Fullerton, CA! It’s in Orange County.

3. How long have you been dancing?
Around 15 years, on and off.

4. What was the worst part about Tryouts?
The huge bruises on my knees and the soreness all over my body!

5. What was the best part about Tryouts?
Learning the routine and getting the chance to dance.

6. Do you have any special talents?
I’m pretty flexible in my back, so I can do scorpions and layouts well.

7. How would your friends describe you?
Unique, friendly, straightforward, funny in an unintentional way.

8. When is your birthday?
September 13, 1990

9. What is your favorite section in Tryouts (jazz, pom, or hip hop) & why?
I liked jazz best because I’m most used to that kind of style, but I guess I was best at pom because of my cheer experience.

10. What is your favorite style of dance?
Ballet, but I like contemporary, too.

11. Why do you love to dance?
It’s something that I just have to do. Every time I stop dancing, I miss it so much. It’s really rewarding and relieving to be able to express how you feel through dance.

12. What would people be surprised to know about you?
I’m actually really clumsy and probably trip 5 times a day. I got Most Clumsy for my senior standout in high school haha. I’m also on Facebook and Twitter too much…but isn’t everyone? :p

13. What is your favorite quote?
“There’s nothing you can’t do, now you’re in New York!” from the song Empire State of Mind.

14. How did you feel when you got the phone call from the team telling you that you made the squad?
At first, I was so apprehensive because they made it sound like I didn’t make it, but when Alisha said I did, I was so happyyy! The call also woke me up, so I guess I was kind of tired. haha

15. Are you excited to have made the ’09-’10 Team!?
Heeeck yes!

December 16, 1991

9. What is your favorite section in Tryouts (jazz, pom, or hip hop) & why?
I liked jazz because it’s more in my comfort zone and hip hop because you can stylize it. But pom was my favorite. It was really hard to learn because I’ve never done it before. But it was so much fun and upbeat and I loved it!

10. What is your favorite style of dance?
Contemporary Jazz and Broadway Jazz

11. Why do you love to dance?
I can’t imagine my life without dance. I never feel more comfortable or happy than when I am performing. It’s my temporary sweet escape from reality.

12. What would people be surprised to know about you?
I really, REALLY want to be a surgeon.

13. What is your favorite quote?
“Forget regret, or life is yours to miss.”

14. How did you feel when you got the phone call from the team telling you that you made the squad?
I was on the bus ride home and I missed the call so I called back immediately. When I found out that I made it, I was about to scream but I had to contain myself because the people on the bus were giving me death glares and telling me, “shhh!!” But I was way too excited! I couldn’t stop smiling all the way home.

15. Are you excited to have made the ’09-’10 Team!?
ABSOLUTELY! Ever since I decided I was attending NYU I was constantly on the lookout for dance team information and tryouts. I can’t believe I’m actually a part of it!

Ben has occasionally wandered through when I’ve been watching the DVD.

Me: OK, I’m thinking of something.

Sophie: Ummm…animal, vegetable, or mineral?

Ben: No Soph, don’t ask that! What you ask is, How many notes does it have?

Me: …four.

Ben: Sophie, that means it’s animated but not sentient. So it’s an animal.

Meet Trish

1. What year are you at NYU & what is your major (if you have one)?
Sophomore at Stern, Marketing major, possible minor in Entertainment, Media, and Technology

2. Where are you from?
Freehold, NJ

3. How long have you been dancing?
Almost 15 years now

4. What was the worst part about Tryouts?
Getting frustrated when I couldn’t remember choreography (especially Pom!)

5. What was the best part about Tryouts?
It was nice to meet the team; it was also a great workout and a good preview for the season to come.

6. Do you have any special talents?
Dance?? Haha.. I used to figure-skate too. Also, I can do a couple freezes from a couple years of break dancing/hip-hop training.

7. How would your friends describe you?
They would probably describe me as super outgoing, friendly, and happy most of the time… Hopefully they would say I’m funny too.

8. When is your birthday?
December 4th, 1989

9. What is your favorite section in Tryouts (jazz, pom, or hip hop) & why?
Jazz was my favorite section because I consider this style, along with contemporary, to be my strengths. Also, out of the three styles, I am definitely most familiar with jazz, although hip-hop was pretty fun to dance too.

10. What is your favorite style of dance?
Contemporary

11. Why do you love to dance?
It’s such a great athletic and artistic way to express myself—it’s my creative outlet. (I love it when I hear a great song and automatically start choreographing in my head!) I also love performing, especially with a team; it’s great to be a part of a second family who loves to dance as much as I do!

12. What would people be surprised to know about you?
Aside from So You Think You Can Dance, pretty much the only thing I watch on TV is the Food Network… haha. People are also generally surprised that I’m in Stern- they say I’m too laid-back for it, but I think I do alright.

13. What is your favorite quote?
If I had one… it would probably be dance related!

14. How did you feel when you got the phone call from the team telling you that you made the squad?
I was really disappointed in my audition in the morning after practicing for hours the night & morning before tryouts, so I didn’t even know how to react when I got the phone call! But I was super excited the rest of the day and am honestly so happy to join the team!

15. Are you excited to have made the ’09-’10 Team!?

Yes, congratulations to our super six who made the final cut of tryouts: Jessie DiMartino, Kelley Kim, Andrea Maylath, Gabriella Scalzo, Trish Wang, and Melissa Wong! It was a tough, tough, super-fast tryout routine you all had to learn this year, but our super six did great and we’re stoked to have you on the team!

That being said, we think it’s about time we got to know some our newbies, and how they felt auditioning!

You’ve decided to form a band. Let’s get your business in order. What are the most important things y

You’ve decided to form a band. Let’s get your business in order.
What are the most important things you can do to make sure that you don’t trip
yourselves up down the road? What can you do now to make sure that when you hire lawyers
and accountants you don’t have to pay later for them to fix business mistakes you could have
avoided? Here are 20 questions to ask yourselves before you get too far.
1. Appoint a Band Administrator: One band member needs to be responsible for keeping
track of the papers and information relating to the band’s business, such as receipts, bank
statements, payments, approvals for licenses, etc. This doesn’t mean that the band appoints
someone to make decisions on behalf of the band, just to make sure that there’s one person to
communicate the band’s decisions to the outside world and share in the burden of keeping track
of the band’s business. You should also decide what rules you are going to follow amongst
yourselves to make voting decisions about spending money, contracts, tours, hiring/firing, etc.
2. Band Agreements/Business Organizations; Accountants. If the band has (or thinks
they have) already signed a band agreement or formed a business organization, then ask to see
copies of all agreements and formation documents. If not, it is a good idea to prepare some
baseline band agreement to cover key issues such as leaving members and how decisions are
made, who can sign checks, etc. This is also a good time to consider getting the band an
accountant or bookkeeper familiar with tour accounting and receipt-intensive travel.
3. Tax Returns: A common mistake that bands make is to have all income paid to one
band member, which usually results in unnecessarily complex adjustments at tax time. You
should find an accountant in your geographical area who is familiar with music issues and band
accounting and take a meeting with that accountant (preferably a Certified Public Accountant,
that special kind of accountant who has passed licensing examinations).
4. Insurance: Many bands overlook the importance of insurance, often until it is too late.
Even if they don’t overlook it, they don’t fully understand why their coverage may be lacking.
From hard experience, we assume that insurance companies exist to deny coverage, so we are
somewhat obsessive about this issue. We ask that the band meet with an insurance agent
experienced in music industry insurance and get a report from that agent about the coverage the
band has compared to what the band needs. In the early days, the band may not have sufficient
monies to both get insurance and set up limited liability entities. We always recommend
insurance in this case.
Copyright 2007-2009 Christian L. Castle (clcasst@christiancastle.com) and Amy E. Mitchell
(amy@christiancastle.com ). All Rights Reserved.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
WWW .CHRISTIANCASTLE. COM
CHRISTIAN L. CASTLE, ATTORNEYS
LOS ANGELES • SAN FRANCISCO
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
5. Legal Names of Members and Professional Name of Band: Each member should
provide the member’s full legal name. This will be necessary for contracts, registration of
copyrights, etc. It is a good idea to have a list of each member’s cell phone and email so you can
give that to anyone who needs to reach you, particularly on the road or in case of emergencies.
6. Date of Birth and Nationality: First, you want to know how old the players are so that
if someone is under the age of 18, you will be prepared for any issues in your state relating to age
of consent (usually for contracts) and employment law (performing in clubs that serve alcohol,
for example). Often this involves having a parent or guardian available to sign off on any written
agreements. Many states have court procedures that can allow minors to have special rights to
do business or make contracts, such as “emancipated minor” laws or “judicial ratification” of
contracts. Do not assume that these laws apply to minors in your band without talking to an
experienced labor lawyer familiar with your state.
It’s also handy to have each member’s date of birth available for any copyright
registration applications you file (such as Form PA for musical compositions) because the U.S.
Copyright Office often requires applicants to include the year of birth. If you are going to be
touring outside of the U.S., be sure you consult an experienced immigration lawyer before you
commit to any contracts.
7. Passport: If the band is planning to tour internationally—including Canada and
Mexico—each member (and any crew traveling with you) must have a valid passport. You
should get a photocopy of the inside pages of the passport (in case of loss or damage and for
immigration forms). It may also be useful to calendar the expiration date of each passport so that
you can quickly know if one member’s passport is set to expire. There are services that can turn
around a passport renewal in 24-48 hours, but they are expensive. There is also an expedited
passport renewal process at the Passport Office in Rockefeller Center in Manhattan, but that, too,
is an expensive process. While it may not be your job to keep track of these things once the band
gets a manager in place, it is well to have the information at hand.
8. Instrument(s) Played, Brand and Inventory: While band members will know who
plays what, it’s useful to have a written record of who plays what so you can give it to someone
else (such as a manager). Also, having information about the instrument(s) and brand(s) that a
member uses could prove useful in strategizing for sponsorship opportunities. We also
recommend having the band complete an inventory of instruments for insurance purposes
(including serial numbers if available), complete with photographs or video of the instruments.
This visual record is especially useful with customized, rare or one-of-a-kind instruments.
9. Split Sheets: Song splits are probably the most sensitive conversations that a band
has together. Attorneys are well advised to give the topic a wide berth, other than to make sure it
gets done. This is another one of those discussions that is better had before the band is making
money.
▬▬▬▬
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
10. Performing Rights Society Affiliation: There is a bit of strategy involved with
affiliating with a performing rights society in the U.S.. All the societies have a creative staff.
The decision to affiliate with a particular society should be made after the artist/writer has taken
some meetings with the performing rights society and decided if there’s more love coming from
one than another. Most of the time we like to wait until the music is fairly well formed and the
band has gelled into a working unit before approaching the societies. In more experienced
bands, the writers will already have an affiliation, so it is a good idea to know this in advance for
purposes of servicing the creative staff with new music, competing for slots on compilations and
festival shows, etc. The major U.S. performing rights societies are the American Society of
Composers, Authors and Publishers (www.ascap.com), Broadcast Music, Inc. (www.bmi.com)
and the Society of European Stage Authors and Composers (www.sesac.com). (SESAC is a now
based in Nashville, TN, despite the “European” reference in its name).
11. Publishing Company: Do the writer members of the band have a publishing or
administration deal or are you self-published? Multiple publishing deals in the same band are
less frequent problems for independent artists, but it does happen, and it can add a layer of
complexity when shopping for a new publishing deal. Keep in mind that if the writers have
affiliated with ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC as a writer, their publishing company must follow the
same affiliation. Another wrinkle comes with writers who are affiliated with foreign societies
(e.g., SOCAN, MCPS-PRS). If you have a foreign society writer or co-writer on your songs, you
should consult with your U.S. society or an experienced music lawyer to determine how to
handle your affiliation and registrations.
12. SoundExchange Artist or Copyright Owner: Featured recording artists and bands
that own their own sound recordings should register with SoundExchange, the U.S. performing
rights organization for sound recordings. Registration forms are available on the
SoundExchange website (www.soundexchange.com) and membership is free. It is a good idea
to check the PLAYS database (which can be done online with a simple registration) for any titles
of your band’s recordings to see if the recordings are already included in the database or are mis-
13. Marital Status: Common problems arising from marriage that require planning
include divorce (and the state law community property issues) and heirs (if a member dies). The
band might be stuck dealing with the (sometimes resentful or surly) widow or widower.
14. Trademark the Band Name/Logo: While there’s nothing new under the sun, you
should do your best to come up with an original name for your band. There may be other bands
using the exact same name. Don’t assume that the other band using your name is not
important—we have heard excuses from “we’ve heard the other band will break up” or “the
other band hasn’t logged into their myspace account in three months.” You should seek the
advice of an experienced trademark attorney to register your band’s name for trademark

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
15. Myspace and Domain Names: Many bands think that if they have a Myspace page
they don’t need to get a domain name, too. It is better to secure rights in the band’s domain
name, even if they just have the band’s domain point to a Myspace page for the moment.
16. ISRC: Any sound recording copyright owner can apply at no charge for their own
Registrant Code that will allow them to generate their own International Standard Recording
Codes, or ISRCs. A Registrant Code is issued by the Recording Industry Association of
America (www.riaa.com). This is an important thing to have because the code designates the
copyright owner of the sound recording concerned and is frequently required by CD duplicators
as well as online music retailers. It is a very common practice for artists who do not have their
own ISRC to use someone else’s ISRC when making their tracks available online. Realize that
the ISRC you give may well create some implication of ownership (which can be rebutted, but
need not be there in the first place).
17. Aggregator: It is almost required that an independent artist sign up with an
aggregator in order to have their works serviced to many online outlets. Realize that mere
servicing does not do one thing toward making the artist less of a needle in a bigger haystack
online.
18. Pre-existing Contracts: Ask for copies of any contracts the band have previously
signed and any music industry contracts any of them have signed before they joined the band.
19. Union Membership: The two principal music industry unions are the American
Federation of Musicians (“AFM”) for musicians and the American Federation of Television and
Recording Artists (“AFTRA”) for vocalists. Any artist who has recorded a major label album
has likely already joined one or both unions. Knowing whether a musician is a union member is
important because union membership carries with it various restrictions such as a minimum fee
to perform at recording sessions (i.e., union scale), as well as payment of royalties such as the
Music Performance Trust Fund and the Special Payments Fund. If you have any band members
who play or sing on union sessions with any great frequency, they probably are or should be
members of one or both unions. AFTRA in particular has very good health insurance available
for near-free if the AFTRA member does over a certain threshold of work through the union
(currently approximately $20,000 per year).
20. Side Projects: All major label deals and many independent record deals require the
exclusive services of their recording artists. You should know what other recording projects, if
any, the individual band members have committed to and if there are any restrictions. This issue
may also come up when a musician signs an artist management contract or a merchandising deal.
There are many more than twenty questions for new artists to answer about their
business, but we think these are a good place to start.
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Hi folks,

Here are the latest problems from the 20 Questions seminar for the query-hungry

====1 Sune====

[read/reply on wiki.]

Is it possible to explicitly define (without AC) a total ordering on a set with cardinality greater than ?

====2 Yuhao====

[read/reply on wiki.]

Let be the function field of an algebraic curve . Then by the
birational nature of the genus, it determines the genus of the
curve. How can we see directly from the field?

(One way is to PICK a function in and we get a ramified morphism , then use Riemann-Hurwitz to compute the genus; However, I
think there should be a more “intrinsic” way to see that, i.e. without
picking a function in an arbitrary manner. The genus is a well-defined
invariant for any extension of the ground field of tr.deg. 1, right?)

====3 Anon====

Determine explicitly a partition of the plane into two sets A and B such that neither A nor B contains (the image of) a non-constant continuous curve.

Meet Connie

Danced two years on the team, is now studying abroad in NYU at Buenos Aires, & will be returning to the team next year in Fall 2010!

1. What is your nickname?
Gunshow

2. What is your favorite place on the NYU campus and why?
Coles Sports Center – it’s a natural sauna in the summer, and an endless supply of free food after games during basketball season!

3. Who is your celebrity crush?
Rajon Rondo, GO CELTICS!

4. What are your aspirations?
I want to dance professionally or for fun until my body tells me to stop. In the meantime, I want to learn 5 languages, open up a yoga studio, and eventually become a secret agent.

5. What is your favorite dance team moment?
Meeting all the girls (and my future roommates).

6. Do you have any special talents?
I can clean a microwave like no other.

7.What do you love about NYU?
No matter where you come from or what you’re interested in, you’ll find your niche in New York City. It’s a little harder to find beer pong and frat parties though…

8.What would people be surprised to know about you?
I’m an expert fry cook. Fish and chips anyone?

And now… a personal message from Connie (all the way from Buenos!)

Hola DT fans and perspective members,

My name is Connie, I’m a junior in CAS, majoring in anthropology, finishing my Spanish minor here in Buenos Aires, and still trying to figure it all out! This city is amazing and unique in so many ways, but I can’t help but be reminded of how much I miss New York City. There are so many people that it’s difficult to feel alone, even with the culture and language barrier. However, it’s just as easy to snuggle up in a quiet cafe while enjoying a café con leche y medialunas.

Just a few things unique to Buenos that I’m kind of in love with…
- Everyone greets each other with besos (kisses) on the cheek.
- People say that NYC never sleeps, but Buenos Aires is truly nocturnal. Dinner starts at 10, bars and clubs fill up around 2:30 am, and bedtime is around 7 am!
- Every house party ends up as a dance party.
- Drivers are just as crazy here, but it’s much harder to cross streets; some are 10+ lanes wide!
- There are cats and dogs EVERYWHERE… restaurants, bars, on the street, cemetery, plazas, parks..

Anyways, I miss you DT and NYC! Good luck with auditions and I hope you guys have an amazing season!

- Connie Gunshow

We miss you too Connie and can’t wait till you return home!

xoxo,

The 20 questions seminar Pablo Solis and I started two weeks ago (see below) is now happening every

The 20 questions seminar Pablo Solis and I started two weeks ago (see below) is now happening every Tuesday afternoon. We’ll be updating the following wiki each week (on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, if we can manage) with a fresh batch of hopefully interesting questions:

http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/20qs

Many generous responses from users here at the secret blogging seminar have already been incorporated there. The wiki is free for mathematicians everywhere to post questions and answers of their own – there is a section for questions from outside the seminar. Our inspiration is the following:

Once in a while, we’ll all come upon a question that screams “this is easy to someone else, but who?” On the other hand, we like to hear questions that are easy for us but hard for others, so we can be useful. So why not trade, and trade fast? Rule #1 at the seminar is:

“1. Avoid asking questions that require a lot of background, like from your own research. Stick to questions you think others are at least as prepared for as you are.”

When people follow it, this rule results in questions that are fun and accessible, and you often end up with answers, too. But since usually the “poser” is the only one really interested in the answer — at least at first — we have adopted the following:

“2. Wait until the end of the seminar to discuss solutions, unless of course you can say the answer very quickly “

This keeps the seminar from degenerating to a dialogue about one question, which I think is the natural tendency. And just so everyone feels welcome, we have:

“3. You do not have to ask or answer a question! Just hearing what lots of people are thinking in a short time is reason enough to attend.”

I think these three ideas, someone recording the questions, and a critical mass of curious mathematicians are all that’s needed for a successful “Questions Seminar”, though time will be the only test.

In the meantime, here are last week’s questions, to be followed by next week’s (on Tuesday):

====1 Mike D (1)====

[read/reply on wiki]

Suppose that ”K” is a field that is complete with respect to a non-discrete valuation ”v”, and (R,m) its valuation ring. Complete means that v-cauchy sequences convergerge. A v-cauchy sequence is a sequence fn such that for every large g in the value group, there exists N such that for i,j > N, v(f_i-f_j) > g.

Let R_m be the completion of ”R” at ”m”. Is the map R \to R_m a ring isomorphism? Is it a homeomorphism? (R_m has the m-adic topology.)

====2 Mike V====

[read/reply on wiki]

Let A be an NxN “Scottish flag matrix”:
*the jth diagonal entry is 2sin(2pi.j/N)
*1’s on the super-diagonal, -1’s on the subdiagonal,
*1 in the bottom left corner, and -1 in the top left corner
*all other entries 0.

What are its eigenvalues? Do they lie inside a square in the complex plan with corners \pm 2 \pm 2i?

====3 Andrew D (1)====

[read/reply on wiki]

Say K is a field of characteristic 2, algebraically closed.

Geometric version: is the zero set of z(xy-z^2) in A^3 normal at (0,0,0)?

Algebraic version: if f,g in A[x,y] have no common factors,
must xf^2+yg^2 be squarefree?

The Mandelbrot set is usually defined over C. It can also be defined in the quaternions or hypercomplexes. What does it look like? If we visualize this 4D set as a time-varying 3D set, will it change smoothly transitions, or will it just flicker in and out of existence?

Some of the blogs that I regularly visit are playing twenty questions, and they are encouraging other bloggers to do so, as well. As I was already in an answering questions frame of mind, I thought it would be fun.

Obviously, I read their blogs because they are smart and witty women. Thus, their responses were smart and witty.

Mine? Well, they’re mine. Smart and witty? Eh. True? Absolutely.

1. Show us the inside of something cute.

See, right off the bat I’m at a disadvantage. I’m snuggling in bed with Baby Monkey and he’s the cutest thing I see at the moment. Rather than cut him open or scope him, I think I’ll skip this one.

2. What’s the last homecooking you had?

I made spaghetti last night, complete with meat sauce that simmered all day long in the crockpot. I cooked and cut up sausage and browned ground beef, threw in some spices. Good Lord, it was delicious.

3. What do you miss?

Haven’t bought a book here since last June.

I miss you, baby. I miss you.

4. What makes you laugh often?

Duh!

5. What’s your favorite word?

Antidisestablishmentariansim.

Not the word itself, but what it does to kids of a certain age. No one is immune. Once kids hit the right age, it becomes a right of passage to be able to pronounce this word. They have absolutely no idea what it means, but they say it for the coolness factor. I love that, for just one moment in time, pronouncing a word correctly makes you cool.

6. What are you trying to quit?

I’m trying so hard to walk by the Turkey Hill Peanut Butter Chocolate ice cream at ShopRite. SO HARD. However, so far, I have been unable to resist.

7. What’s your favorite commercial right now?

I laugh out loud, every time, at the Justin Timberlake/Peyton Manning ping-pong Sony commercial.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eE9-gnCViEM

8. Whose style do you dig?

Jennifer Garner. Without a doubt. I’ve never seen someone so incredibly comfortable with herself. She’s just as beautiful in jeans and a t-shirt as she is on the red carpet. She just strikes me as a beautiful, happy woman who enjoys life. So, the style I admire isn’t necessarily fashion, but her style of living.

9. Link to a great blog you’ve discovered lately…

I’m enjoying SouleMama’s blog quite a bit. Beautiful Mess is pretty funky as well. I just discovered these two over the weekend.

10. What’s the last craft you made?

I’m assuming that I can include the scarf I’m knitting for Monkey Girl. So, yeah…it’s this:

11. A photo of the last happy mail you got :]

Do you get “happy mail?” Because, I don’t get “happy mail.” I get bills and junk mail. I haven’t gotten “happy mail” since I was 8 and got invitations to birthday parties. You wanna send me “happy mail?” I’d love it! I’d take a picture and post it here! However, until then, I have to skip this one, also.

12. Something you’ve got lately?

I got rhythm, I got music, I got my man, who could ask for anything more? (Surely I’m not the only one who knows this song, right? We’ve all seen Girl Crazy (1943), right?)

13. What are you looking forward to?

Next Sunday, I’m taking Monkey Girl to the American Girl store in NYC. We are going to take the train in, walk around and check it out, then we have reservations for tea at 4 pm. Can’t wait.

14. Post a recent snapshot of yourself.

Just don’t ask…because really, I don’t know.

15. Recent Favorite Movie?

16. Something you’re working on right now?

I’ve been working on getting representation for my book http://bozzawrites.wordpress.com and I’ve been working on finding some freelance writing jobs. It’s slow going in both arenas, but I’m working on it!

17. If a movie were made about you, who would play you?

Reese Witherspoon. I’ve been stopped in stores and asked if anyone had ever told me that I looked like her. Several times. I think it depends on the day for me, and in which movie you are thinking of her. So, Reese it is.

18. What gives you goosebumps?

The new American Girl Doll. She’s homeless and they are only making the outfit she comes with. No accessories. Nothing extra to buy. Just the doll. I think kids can learn a lot from it.

However, let me be clear. I would have a lot more goosebumps if they would donate the proceeds from Gwen to homeless charities or offer some free dolls to homeless children. Kinda pisses me off that they aren’t going that route.

Still, I think it’s a good lesson for kids to learn.

19. Share a new obsession.

20. What’s the meaning of your life?

Dream as if you’ll live forever; live as if you’ll die today.

We’ll come back to the Monte Bello Tasting Room for this, the 6th edition of our Official RIDG

We’ll come back to the Monte Bello Tasting Room for this, the 6th edition of our Official RIDGE-Ite 20 Questions Questionnaire, and have a visit with Darren Gardner, the newest member of the Monte Bello Tasting Room Staff. Darren comes to us from the wildly beloved Los Altos Grill, where he works during the week. The restaurant plays a rather funny role in our hiring Darren actually; Sara Teeter, our hospitality rep here at Monte Bello, is quite a fan of the Los Altos Grill. But she had never met Darren. (Partly because he was a “walk-in”, meaning we hadn’t contacted him, he just came into the tasting room one weekend and dropped off a resume). So Sara, not having met him, was curious and asking questions, and I mentioned that he worked at The Los Altos Grill. She immediately turned to me and said firmly “hire him.” So we did! As I think you’ll see from his answers, Darren is serious about his wine, and serious about Ridge! (Though his answer about the Aroma Wheel is rather humorous …)

The Official Ridge-ite 20 Questions Questionnaire

1. Can you briefly describe the first time you remember “consciously” drinking a bottle of wine (meaning, you were aware of what you were tasting, and to what extent you were enjoying it)?

(no answer)

2. Who first “turned you on” to drinking good wine?

Chris Nault, my former manager at the Los Gatos Brewing Co. taught me how to taste and enjoy wine. His enthusiasm for fine wine was inspirational to me.

3. Do you remember the first time you tried a wine from Ridge? (What was it, where did you try it, etc.)

The owner of the Los Gatos Brewing Co. organized a day where the whole staff went up to Monte Bello for a tour and a private tasting. We tasted the Geyserville and the Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet. After that I was hooked.

4. When did you first realize you had an interest in wine that went beyond that of the “casual” consumer?

Within the last two years I found myself thinking about wine, having extended conversations about wine, and wanting to know more and more about wine. I found it was important to me to have proper food and wine pairings and I decided that I didn’t want to drink bad wine ever again.

5. What was your first job “in the industry?”

I have been in the restaurant industry since 2006. Ridge is my first wine industry job!

6. When did you first join Ridge, and what led you here?

I joined in May of this year. Ridge was the only place I wanted to be. I wanted to work for the best and learn from the best. That’s why I’m here.

7. If you had to pick, is there one Ridge wine that you prefer above all others?

No, I can’t pick one. Ridge wines are like family members; I love them all for different reasons.

8. Do you have a favorite food and wine pairing?

Sauvignon Blanc with shellfish.

9. If you could have any Ridge wine, served with any meal, cooked by any chef, with any companion, anywhere in the world, what would you select?

I would be at home with the 1971 Monte Bello and a nice steak. What more does one need?

10. Is there a common “myth” or “belief” or supposed “truism” in the world of wine that you’d like to take the opportunity to debunk? (white wines only with fish, wine is made in the winery, alcohol levels in California are too high, the 100-pt wine rating scale is obsolete, etc.)

I’ve noticed that certain wine drinkers like to compare wines against each other. They say things like, “this is way better than that.” For me, wine tasting is not about that at all. I prefer to think of each wine as it’s own separate entity and appreciate (or not appreciate) it for what it is.

11. Outside of California, what is your wine region of choice?

Burgundy.

12. When you’re not drinking wine, what is your beverage of choice?

Gin and tonic.

13. If you could have any other job in the food/wine industry then the one you have now, what would it be?

I’m not sure yet. I’m still too new to the industry to know exactly where I want to be.

14. Wine & Cheese, or Wine & Chocolate?

Wine & Cheese.

15. What has been the best wine experience to date in your life? (Where were you, who were you with, what did you drink, etc.)

One of my first wine tasting experiences was on a wine tour in Mendoza, Argentina. We visited three wineries that day. The tour finished at a small, family owned winery. Their tasting room/cellar was beautiful. The bar and stools were made from old wine barrels. They laid out an unbelievable selection of meat, cheese, honey, olives, and bread. They served one wine and I still remember how rich and well structured it was. The combination of great wine, food, and company made it a day I’ll never forget.

16. What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever seen happen in a wine tasting room?

Ask me again after I’ve got a few more months under my belt.

17. What do you consider to be the five most important items in your fridge right now?

Mustard, Red Tail Ale, cheese, broccoli, and peanut butter.

18. If you could offer one piece of advice to someone who is interested in getting a job in the wine industry, what would it be?

Drink more wine.

19. How do you feel about the “aroma wheel”?

I don’t pay much attention to it because it makes me dizzy.

20. What’s the desktop photo on your computer?

A landscape photo I took in Joshua Tree National Park last November.
