This Thursday was my friend Kit aka “Bunny’s” birthday. I promised that I would revisit some of our bff-hood as her wedding gift (if you’ll remember, she got married last month). So today, I bring you a momentous multimedia spectacular that showcases some of our best awkardness.

When we were in ninth grade, Bunny and I had some complicated boy troubles. We decided to channel our frustration by making a list of 100 reasons y guys suck (yes with the “y” instead of the real word.) I’m not sure we actually took our own advice, but the list brings the lols nonetheless.

I used “Bootylicious” as the background music, since Kit and I basically wanted to be Beyonce. Sadly, we were short, white and hopelessly suburban. But damn did we try our best.

I’m going to pin this list on my wall at school, in all its early-2000s AOL printout glory. Note the pink font and our fantabulous screennames. Though we wrote this when we were much less cool, I think a lot of the items still hold true today. But in the advent of social media, I feel I need to add one last reason:

101.) Three months after your breakup, though you haven’t talked since that day, they still try to invite you to be their neighbor on pointless and confusing Facebook applications like FishVille.

(Yeah, true story.)

I love you, Bunny! Happy Birthday, and I’m glad you found a guy who doesn’t suck.

Ankle Biters

“Forget about what you’ve seen in the movies. All the legends are bogus: Vampires like sunlight, stakes don’t work, garlic is delicious and I really, really wish I was Blade, but unfortunately I happen to be lame.”

Jarv’s Rating: 0 fucking Changs. Walter most unimpressed.

Alright, I own up- I did doctor the end of that quote.

I’ve been on a right run of garbage recently. I actually saw this before Return of The Living Dead 2, but it made me die a bit inside, so I haven’t got round to writing it up until today.

Let me be absolutely clear about this from the start: this film is an abhorrent pile of garbage, I have nothing good at all to say about it. It’s grossly incompetent, but not in a fun way, the acting is awful, it neglects the absolute basics of making a film, the special effects are dire, the writing is atrocious, it is completely incoherent and it is no fun whatsoever.

This really makes me cross, because the premise is gold and the trailers make it sound much better than it actually is. My tolerance level for these kinds of films is extremely high, I can put up with more than most and can find something good to say about such absolute mince as Head Cheerleader, Dead Cheerleader. So for a film to get a 100% negative review from me, it has to actually work on being bad. Mere laziness and incompetence won’t cut it. This is that film.

The premise of the film is that in the near future the world (read- America) is being overrun by a vicious plague of biker vampire midgets and only Drexel (a half-vampire hybrid that thinks he’s the white version of Blade) and a motley crew of hunters can deal with it (one of the hunters is, incidentally, a multi-millionaire who lives in a white trash farm house- but it’s OK, you can tell he’s a millionaire because he is introduced buying a painting in a gallery. That’s how rich he is, he can buy art). Midget vampires can only make other vampires of diminished stature- to make a normal sized person a vampire they need a normal sized vampire. Luckily for them, there’s a magic sword around and if they kill someone with it, he becomes a big vampire. Cue boredom and irritation, before the most lame showdown I’ve ever seen.

As is usual with vampire films nowadays, they go out of their way to reinvent hundreds of years of Vampire mythology. Drexel kindly explains it, (yawn) but apparently everything we thought we knew about Vampires is actually rubbish. They can only be killed by injecting them with Vampire blood (what, why?), can wonder around in daylight, garlic etc doesn’t work, and so on. I understand that most of these were for budgetary reasons, and I can deal with that, but why the blood thing?

Midgets in these films almost always equal gold- see Chopper Chicks or the mighty Leprechaun films for examples of how to use midgets for fun and profit. This film is a rock solid example of how not to do it. Firstly, when dealing with dwarves the problem is always going to be getting round how fucking silly it looks when a normal sized person fights someone three feet smaller then him. Leprechaun managed it by cheating and using magic. Chopper Chicks humiliated the dwarf for entertainment. However, here, they fail by having people either fall over and wait for the dwarves to jump on and beat them up or (ridiculously) have the dwarf cling on to the back of the person he’s fighting. It’s awful and embarrasing.

However, as much as the waste of midget comdy gold makes me cross, my special anger is reserved for the Helen Keller clone that did the sound work in this. I appreciate that it was made for no money whatsoever, possibly on a camcorder, but someone needs a slap. You can hear the people close to the camcorder really clearly, but if the person speaking is more than 3 feet from it, you can’t hear a damned word. Not a word. The remote for the telly at Casa del Jarv was constantly in action adjusting the volume to try to make out what they were saying before I chucked a huff and sat and watched it in near silence (although the volume was set to pretty near max)with the look of a lottery winner that had lost his ticket on my face.

And as for the action scenes: Just. Fuck. Off.

Again, budgetary issues are at the heart of this, but having Drexel jump from the ground up onto a high gate backwards is not a special effect. Especially when it’s patently obvious that they filmed it by having him jump down from the fucking gate then inserted it in reverse in the film. (This is kind of indicative of the “special” effects in the film. Every so often Blade Drexel takes his sunglasses off to reveal lame contact lenses, and the vampire fangs are blatantly from a joke shop.) Or the fight scene where it looks like Drexel is getting buggered by the big biker vampire dude. And don’t even get me started on the showdown.

Did I mention that this film is also boring. And not just a little bit, terribly, awfully fucking dull. There’s shot after shot after shot of cars and bikes driving around for no apparent reason, and when every vampire in the town turns up at the showdown, they drive around in circles for what feels like forever. Aaaaaaaargh.

So, given all of the above, would I recommend it? Absolutely fucking not, under no circumstances would I even consider saying anything good about it at all. There isn’t even any gratuitous titty shots to enliven things- which is a must for low budget schlock.

This leads me to my conclusion- who is to blame for this? It would be easy to blame Adam Minarovich, being as he wrote it, directed it, starred in it, roped his friends and family in to working on it (his parents even did the catering), but I don’t blame him. That’s far too easy. I want to widen the net and find the real culprit of this atrocity. It could be the dickheads that picked it up for distribution, but I see them more as collateral damage. I think the person to blame for it is: THE FUCKING WALLMART EMPLOYEE THAT SOLD THAT MASSIVE TOOL MINAROVICH A DIGITAL CAMERA.

I’m tempted to fly to Buttfuck, Arizona or wherever the fuck this disgrace was filmed, find that asshat and beat him to death with my laptop. It’s all his fault.

If Die You Zombie Bastards didn’t exist then Ankle Biters would be the worst film I’ve ever seen. The film that manages to be so bad it’s actually bad.

When I learned that Topps was bringing back its popular T206 brand that they made back in 2002, I was excited to see what unique relic cards they planned to include. So far I haven’t seen anything too exciting. They have Ruth, Foxx, Mantle and A-rod. But I really enjoy the different relic cards that they included with the 2002 version like Jimmy Collins, Buck Herzog, and Johnny Evers. The ‘09 version just seems like it has the same old people. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to pull a a bat card of Ruth or Cobb, but I think the ‘02 product has more of a selection of old players that you don’t see very often.

In lieu of airport delays, Cinnabons, and watery margaritas, Carey and I were strongly urged by a U.

In lieu of airport delays, Cinnabons, and watery margaritas, Carey and I were strongly urged by a U.S. Airways customer service agent to avoid taking our original 6:08 pm flight to Philadelphia and hold off for a more convenient 5:40 am flight tomorrow morning. (Um…) So, what does this really mean?

Well, another night with Eli, of course—and a little food and wine too.

We successfully revisited and revised the C+C original Rosemary and grape flatbread recipe. Paired with a Rosso Di Montalcino and a Woodstock documentary, we came as close as possible to replacing the fun we were supposed to have been having with family in Virginia.

I pulled this 2002 Rosso Di Montalcino off the rack at Purdy’s. No shelf talker on this one—but the ‘02 vintage intrigued me, and well—Carey loves the Italians (for their wines, of course).

An arrangement of brick and brandy-like colors nicely reflect this wine’s advancing years—especially the copper-toned rim. I was happy to note that the flavor profile was not quite as far along in maturity as the appearance would have suggested. There is a surprising sweetness of cherries that builds on the mid palate.

Nothing dominates this wine; there is nothing in excess. A bit of leather and fruit in the mouth, a touch of suppleness from the oak, hints of ginger and brandy on the nose, well-natured tannins, and an easy acidity.

Modified flatbread recipe: We eliminated the whole yeast/flour/rise component by purchasing a fresh pizza dough from the grocery store ($1.29). Fresh rosemary was rolled in with the dough, brushed with olive oil, and sprinkled with sea salt. Top with sliced grapes, blue cheese crumbles, drizzled honey, and chopped fresh chives. Bake for about 20 minutes at 400 degrees, or until it looks… ahh, cooked. Cut and serve.

Örtüşmemişti Türkiye’yle.

İşte buraya dikkat…

1965′in Türkiye genelindeki galibi kim? Adalet Partisi…

Vermedi Özal’a oy… Sonradan, Özal’ın “milli görüş” çizgisinde biri olmadığı ortaya çıkınca, İzmirli rahatladı. ANAP’a da oy verdi.

1987, Türkiye ANAP.
İzmir’de de ANAP.
1991, Türkiye DYP.
İzmir’de de DYP.

1995.

Türkiye’den Refah çıktı.
İzmir’den DSP.
Sapma oldu.
Dikkat isterim…

Tarihimiz boyunca, ilk kez, bir sonraki seçimde İzmir’in dediği olmadı.

Yay for another decade list of albums that influenced my growing up as a teenager. This list probably means jack-shit in the grand scheme of things, but regardless here are my top 40 records that I think owned. Just a note that one a band has had an album already appear, no more will come up, just to share it around.

40. The Killers – Hot Fuss (2004)

I remember back in 2004 when The Killers were the ultimate hype of the year, and so they should have been, they were great, and Hot Fuss was an amazing album. From “Jenny Was A Friend Of Mine” through to “Everything Will Be Alright”, this album owned my summer and was one of my first transitioning albums from my young, 13-year old rap and hiphop faze (everyone’s been there, okay?). I’m not sure if it was their catchy one-liners, or dominate 80’s synths, that would go on to really influence the bands I enjoy in music, but The Killers catchy pop riffs backed with Brandon Flowers lyrics “Make this go away without a word” in “Midnight Show” lifted my adolescence. What a shame The Killers never got back to this status as the following 2 albums that followed (not including Sawdust, b-side albums don’t count).

39. Sigur Rós – Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (2008)

For me lyrics are a huge part of who I do and don’t enjoy listening to. So when Icelandic band Sigur Rós came into my life it breached all contracts. Understandably, hardly any of their tracks are in English but for some reason it doesn’t seem to faze me. Their music is simply so divine by tune of the song you can gather what it is about. And if you still don’t know you can make it up really. I suppose the influence of Thom Yorke putting forward that “this band is going to be huge” also helps ones inhibition and self promotion. I think with or without the word from Yorke Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust was always going to be a fantastic album.

38. The Shins – Chutes Too Narrow (2003)

Having your bands name come out of Natalie Portman’s mouth I guess impacts on a small minority of followers. Having your band pasted all over a soundtrack is another. Regardless, The Shins were always going to be as rated as they are, and their fantastic debut is no exception. Realistically, Garden State was an indie film, and although there have been amazing indie’s before it, ie. The Virgin Suicides collaboration with Air, Dappled Cities writing out the last couple of anthems for Disney. The Shins success has also been filled with rock n roll back-story that critics love to hear, from front-man James Mercer receiving death-threats from a neighbor while trying to write and record Wincing The Night Away. Chutes Too Narrow is full of fun and vibrant “indie” tracks that have easily impacted on the decades explosion in the indie world.

37. The Postal Service – Give Up (2004)

Ben Gibbard and James Figurine seemed like an unlikely couple, and many were skeptic from the start. One gave his soul to promotion on The OC and is now more commonly known as the king of the indie world, though 7 records in and signed to a major label. The other half of The Postal Service is an electronics genius. But when the two got together to do Give Up it proved a fantastic combination of talents, even among the music world. “Such Great Heights” has boastfully been covered more times by more artists than most (Ben Folds, Iron & Wine etc), not to mentioned a sneak cover every now and then, with one of the greatest lyrics in a song written, also covered by Teddy what’s-his-name. Give Up oozes confidence from start to finish.

36. Peter, Bjorn & John – Writer’s Block (2006)

For a good 18 months people all over the world could not stop whistling that pop brilliance that came out of the world wide hit “Young Folks”. It was enjoyable regardless of people not listening to the lyrics and hearing what the song was really about “If I told you things I did before, Told you how I used to be, Would you go along with someone like me?“. Writer’s Block is solid gold in every track from start to finish. In its lyrical brilliance of “Objects Of My Affection” to the short and sweetness of “Start To Melt” that you never want to end. And the devistating heart-break of “The Chills” with “Don’t know about love, But I know the lack of it” that rings in your ears for days after.

35. Iron & Wine – The Shepard’s Dog (2007)

After releasing multiple albums revolving around a simple husky voice and an old acoustic guitar, Samual Beam, better known as, Iron & Wine turned up the amps, switched on the distortion, and layered as many tracks down per song as possible to produce one of the fantastic albums of 2007. Though as Iron & Wine’s style of song-writing goes, it can be a bit hard to tell what he is writing about, The Shepard’s Dog tells the great Beam stories of love, loss, what he wants, and what seems out of reach, “There is a house by the sea, And an ocean between it and me“, though as Beam assures no distance is too far out of reach. This in-turn creates one of the fantastic folk records of the decade.

34. Augie March – Sunset Studies (2001)

While it seems apparent that not much “super-fantastic-omg-amazing” music comes out of the western parts of the southern hemisphere, Augie March are this fantastic Australian band that have circulated around for years. Though it wasn’t until 2006 and the release of the chart topping hit “One Crowded Hour” was released that they would come to fame, but I remember hearing back when I would have been so young hearing “There Is No Such Place” and the beautiful song that it is. Augie March seem to be king at beautiful arrangements of piano & guitar that can span out for any length of time, like on the eariness of “Hole In Your Roof” another key track.

33. Band Of Horses – Everything All The Time (2006)

Strongly influenced by the likes of Built To Spill and Interpol is the Seattle based 3-piece Band Of Horses with their stunning debut release of Everything All The Time. Like Built To Spill before them Band Of Horses follow the same multi-layered guitar, strongly dominated by lead rifs, arranged around Ben Birdwill’s beautiful and unique voice. Tracks like, “Our Sword” and “The Funeral” play key in this epic, 36 minute indie-pop gem of the decade that recieved critical praise among reviewers all over the world.

32. Daft Punk – Discovery (2001)

Something about the unflinching charm and optimism of Daft Punk’s Discovery is too lovable to hate on too much. It’s so damn happy and unassumingly danceable that it doesn’t grate on me the way other albums like it have. Though previous Daft Punk records seemed hard to listen to, after all, they were really just a combination of samples that the duo would use in their live sets, they just made tracks out of them, yet Discovery seems the perfect record for a group of this genre so early on. The duo from Paris who hit the dance bullseye in Discovery by combining a variety of old-school styles with modern studio techniques and meticulous production. And who is ever going to forget this album with singles like “One More Time”, the anthem to any party that will just never end.

31. Muse – Black Holes And Revelations (2006)

Muse has cemented its legacy among the faithfuls of the rock genre with this effort. Riding on the coattails of Absolution’s stunning success, Black Holes And Revelations simply is a stellar gem from top to bottom. Opening the curtains for this album is “Take A Bow” which has a strong political message included in it. Screaming “Corrupt, you’re corrupt and bring corruption to all that you touch”, the song really tells what the band thinks about the present world. Closing the album is one of its released tracks “Knights of Cydonia”. Galloping horses, a spectacular guitar work, the song closes the album on a high note implanting in your head “No one’s going to take me alive“, it really seems fitting for anthem of the decade.

While I can agree with their top 2 picks (Miami ‘01 & Texas ‘05), and sympathize with trying to decide between the two; clearly they take a shot at BuckeyeNation by intentionally leaving out both the ‘02 and ‘06 team – and calling attention to it.

A few weeks ago ‘My Little Eye’ (2002) was on the telly. To be honest when I started watching it I wasn’t all that keen or impressed. For starters I missed the beginning so it took me a while to figure out what was going on, which of course isn’t the fault of the film but my own. Second of all the film is a cross between Big Brother and the Blair Witch Project. You are viewing what the ‘audience’ see, through non film camera’s so it has that low-budget look. I’m a woman of contradictions I don’t particularly like that low-budget look but I did love the Blair Witch Project.

Initially I carried on watching because Kris Lemche is in it and I quite like the TV shows he has been in (Joan of Arcadia, Psych). I’ll be frank, he’s also easy on the eyes. As the film progressed it began to show signs of promise. The show was on quite late and as I had work in the morning I had no intentions of watching the entire film even with Lemche in it! I usually stick to my ‘if I’ve missed the beginning, don’t watch it’ rule, but for some reason it kept me hanging on. Although on the surface it seems rather predictable, we’ve all seen big brother and horror films and for the most part it lives up to that. Underneath the surface though it packs an enigma punch. It had me hooked right until the end even though it meant being awake until 2am! (Although luckily for me it was daylight saving and it was actually 1am – Glorious!)

The film is about 5 total strangers who have to live together in an isolated house in the wilderness of America. The house is littered with cameras filming their every move. The premise is that they are here for a brand new internet show in which they have to live together for 6 months. The catch is, to win th $1 million, no one can leave. If one person leaves they all lose. Predictably their weekly packages containing their rations serve as a form of mental torture to test them by the production team. Food rations turn to nothing and they begin to get surprises that reveal their inner most secrets. This is just the beginning for the household. For one of the characters, Danny, his morality is tested when he is told his Grandfather has died. Should he leave to go to the funeral, which means they all lose, or does he stay for the money? On the other hand will the other housemates stop him if he does decide to leave?

There is so much more to the film but I couldnt possibly reveal anymore without giving away crucial plot turns. What info I have been able to divulge is only the tip of the iceberg. One thing I can say, If I havent sold this film to the fellas there are boobs in this film. I know that will make a lot of guys go and see this film! Haha. Oh and nude Bradley Cooper for the ladies!

I’m looking into getting hold of the film on DVD (not because of the above! you guys have filthy minds) and when I do I shall blog about it. The special feature on the DVD has me rather intrigued. As I mentioned before it’s filmed in a Big Brother style with multiple cameras. On the DVD you can flip between these cameras while your watching it, I think you can only do this on a few scenes but even still it’s definitely worth investigating. So watch this space!

The trailer looks like a bad university film but dont let that put you off.

Quick info: Produced by J.C.Staff. Directed by Masami Shimoda. Based on a manga by Kou Fumizuki.

Expectations: A harem?

Impressions: No, doesn’t really look like a harem, more like magical girlfriend, at least so far. Two childhood friends meeting cute is okay I guess, but the protagonist’s obvious lame-guy appeal is “pfft”-worthy.

The incomprehensible underwear fetish rears its head. And anyway, who folds up their clothes this nicely before taking a bath? Because I sure don't.

And the way Aoi acted made me raise an eyebrow. Yes, the conventions of the genre say that the magical girlfriend magically falls right into the protagonist’s hands, and her pretty much forcing herself on him has obvious lame-guy appeal, but…!!! She entered the apartment of who she thought was a random guy she met on the railway station. And even if turns out that he’s actually the childhood friend she came to visit, it doesn’t mean that it’s sane to stay over for the night either, you never know how a person can change in 18 years. That girl needs a brain transplantation… though I guess that also has its own appeal.

Well, the only reason I checked out this anime was because watching too much good stuff in a row tends to skew my expectations. I’m very obviously not the target audience, so there isn’t really any reason to continue watching.

Rating: 5.8/10

After finding out that ‘el Turco’ is sailing down the cost with a dangerous navy in tow, Don Alonso Quijano, and the gentleman Don Alonso Quijano will once more leave, against the wishes of his niece and her nurse, to start a new battle that will start in la Mancha and end at sea.
