How to know if ones' action is good or bad?
How will you say the following are good or bad?
i)Killing a terrorist is that good or bad? May be God or Nature needs such people to keep human population under fear or threat or even under control
ii)Helping a prey escape from predator? Is it good if the prey is a very rare species?
iii)Helping the poor — May be he was Lazy?? who knows??
How will you say that these deeds are good or bad? do we really need to care?

Good and bad are relative terms. This is the conflict we have in our mind out of ignorance of the entirety and the future. If I see from philosophical point of view I would take a decision to the best of my ability (to perceive the entirety) but again it should not result in a guilt or negative feelings in the mind.

The actions we take are suppose to condition our mind for higher levels. If it conditions negetively then we have not achieved the purpose.

It is all relevant. Even the questions you pose. Does the outcome suit your vision of a good world? If so, you action is good(to you only) otherwise it is bad. You must choose for yourself.
I start from the Utilitarian principle: That action which increases the net happiness of the universe is a good action.

When the actions are questionable, God looks at the motives and intents of the heart.

When you help the poor, why are you REALLY doing it, who are you REALLY doing it for (ultimately)?

Most things we do, other than the day-to-day living, is based on either the least amount of pain or the greatest amount of pleasure. That’s just the human nature we all have. Nobody wants pain, and if at all possible, will avoid it.

But I have to see an oral surgeon on Monday, and even though that will be VERY painful, yet the other option is worse, so this – in the long run – brings the least amount of pain.

Is my illustration helpful?
no1home2day | Jul 17, 2009

 i) To kill a terrorist who threatens the lives of many INNOCENT people is okay. Of course to capture the and prevent their crimes is preferable, if the choice comes down to one terrorist’s live or hundreds of innocent ones I know what I choose, and BTW neither God nor nature care at all or else there would just be more infertile people or something less destructive like that!
ii) The natural order shouldn’t be interrupted, because in preserving the life of one species, you may kill he other by denying it a meal. It isn’t your place to choose what dies and what survives, so just let nature run its course.
iii) Often these people pretty much have to audition for this charity. Anyhow, if you don’t need it why not give it away, it won’t hurt you!
Anonymous | Jul 17, 2009

The first thing to ask is: Would I like this to be done to me?

The next is: Does this feel right?

Third is: What principle am I using to decide?

1) If a terrorist is aggressive towards us, we are entitled to attack in self defence. Justifying the evil that they do, on the basis of reducing population, is cruel and inhumane.

2) A rare species should be protected, if at all possible, as long as there is another alternative for the predator to eat.

3) We should try to help the poor to help themselves, if at all possible. If not, we can only use our own discretion as to whether to help a person in need. Some do take advantage of others, but many do not. How can we really decide? First, give them the benefit of the doubt, until it is proven one way or the other. Is that what we would want for ourselves?
happilycatholic | Jul 17, 2009

 1) Bad – I do not play God and decide people’s fate, unless it is a matter of self defense and the Terrorist is actively about to kill people…in that case, I’m forced to make a decision one way or another, it is a lose-lose situation, as I’m convinced that 1 way or another, someone will die. In those very RARE cases… it is permissible to kill the Terrorist to protect those under your care. – Otherwise NO

2) I see this as OK, not super great…but generally permissible, assuming that the Predator will have other opportunities. I am stepping in and altering nature, which I guess Human beings do all the time, but saving that life will likely only be a temporary fix. Much better to figure out WHY the species is rare, and possibly restore its numbers in the wild thru a captive breeding program of some sort.

3) Good, I am a bit selfish and don’t always do this.. but it is very compassionate to help those less fortunate… I DO think that those who aren’t actively trying to better themselves and get out of that situation are being lazy. There are many social programs they can take advantage of. — But regardless of their actions.. it is always good and compassionate of another to take pity and have compassion on another human being.
John S | Jul 17, 2009

An action is good when the action has to do for the betterment of mankind and does not involve physical or emotional pain. This is for the giver and by the giver. This act is a good act. Killing a terrorist is bad because the negitivity of the terrorist is invoked within you. You become him. So where is the good in you? A terrorist is a terrorist because of his faulty upbringing, faulting teachings or anything that is wrong.
Helping a poor, many people think in terms of money. Givig money is easy for the giver because the giver lives in this illusion that he has helped. Help is teaching one to fish and not giving him fish. Giving money is like giving fish, it the poor are given fish when is he going to learn to fish. No one is poor because each one is given the best potentials to use. Having material things is not richness, leaning the facts of life, and finding ourselves without being harmed by the "shoulds" of society is true richness.
God within you tells you what is good or bad. When you suppress inner voice you will not be able to know what is good or bad.

Modest Mouse

Original: 2000

Reissue: 2004

Epic Records

Modest Mouse has always been an intriguing band… but then again so is their fan base. For example, there are people who like their music (I’m one of them), there are people who like them ironically (because they’re bad (which they aren’t)), and there are people who don’t like them at all. Now I’ll be honest, I can’t claim to have a lot of indie cred on this. I started liking Modest Mouse just before they got popular in the mainstream. The Moon and Antarctica is personally my favorite album from them, and that’s what we’re here to talk about, so let’s get into it.

Starting off with “3rd Planet”, we have some mellow guitar, and then we hear Isaac Brock for the first time on the album. Yep, it’s definitely the way we expect Brock to sound. This is a very strong track starting off the album. The music, while slightly repetitive, isn’t to the point of being boring, and really sets a good tone. The lyrics are definitely the hallucinogen-inspired deepness that genius Brock churns out constantly.

“Gravity Rides Everything” starts off with some cool guitar effects, like someone messing with a crossfader. Brock changes it up a little here, sounding slightly more hushed and mellow (if it were possible). But as usual, the lyrics are slightly unintelligible, but nonetheless brilliant. I think I even heard some wood block percussion in there! Hell yeah Modest Mouse!

“Dark Center of the Universe” is up next, and I personally love the intro to this song. It really does have the mood like you’re floating in space, and there’s nothing around you, but you’re following the sound of a guitar. Oh yeah, and Brock has his signature sound here, of course. Once we get past the first verse, it really kicks in and it’s a full effort from the whole band. Oh yeah, and the chorus really kicks ass, especially the lyrics (semi-intelligible as they are). Definitely one of my favorite songs on the album, both in terms of music and lyrics.

“Perfect Disguise” drops the tempo incredibly, but you can definitely tell it’s a Modest Mouse song from the start. At 2:43, it’s one of the shorter songs on the album, but it definitely feels like the usual 4 minute tracks due to the tempo. Cool background vocals, the usual brilliant lyrics, and vocals and music blending well deliver a solid mellow track.

But don’t count Modest Mouse out because you don’t like the mellow stuff, because they’re back in gear with “Tiny Cities Made of Ashes”. Brock has an interesting sound here with his vocals. I’m not sure if he’s harmonizing with himself or another member of the band, but it sounds damn cool. Then the chorus changes it completely. Oh yeah, also this is the song that Isaac Brock stabbed himself multiple times during at a performance a year ago or so. He’s a crazy motherf*cker. Did I mention hallucinogens before? Because Brock likes them. Keep that in mind. Oh and the guitar outro is cool.

“A Different City” starts out right in your face with some kickass guitar which drops out, but comes back later. Brock describes wanting to live a life of solitude in a different city, but using confusing language at times. For example: ‘I wanna remember to remember to forget you forgot me’…. yeah….. Still a really cool song, with Modest Mouse sticking to what they know.

“The Cold Part” slows it down again, but I can’t get into this song for some reason. The vocal effects and guitar both have really cool sounds, there’s even some violin! It just comes off as a depressing song, and maybe that’s what I don’t like about it. For me, it’s definitely the low point of the album.

“Alone Down There” brings back confusing harmonies (if you can call whispering harmonizing… can you?) Brock’s evil laughing at times adds a cool element to the song as well, and he’s in true form in the chorus. Another short song, this time at 2:23, but doesn’t fall short (hahahaha play on words!). The one thing about this song is that it kinda leaves you hanging, like it finishes before it’s over. The guitar solo is pretty awesome though, and takes us out fairly well. Either way, a definite improvement over “The Cold Part”.

“The Stars Are Projectors”… the 8, almost 9 minute epic. In the beginning, Brock seems like he just overdubbed multiple layers of himself just babbling into the mic, and then it comes back again shortly thereafter. Then the cool part of the song starts, with the deep lyrics that are expected. Sometimes I wonder if they are intended to be deep, or if we’re just reading far too much into them. Either way, the brilliance is obvious, albeit drug-induced. The third stage starts speeding up, and then we slow back down again. This song really is like a roller coaster ride. Some speeding up again, and trippy-ness, all funneling into a slow-paced ending.

So here’s one of my favorite songs on the album, where Brock does everything. “Wild Packs of Family Dogs” is a short song with an interesting theme; it’s about a kid whose life is ruined by these wild dogs. His dad gets fired, his sister gets abducted and eaten, and his own dog runs away with them. But what the hell is blood dust? Something you can cry, apparently. Eventually, the dogs die at the same time as him, and they go to heaven. What the hell is this song really about? I think you need to take LSD to really figure it out, so someone test this and report back. Not really though.

“Paper Thin Walls” is another up-beat, up-tempo song, and this really gets the nod for my favorite song on the album. To be honest, something about this song really makes me happy, and I can’t explain it. It’s a helluva lot of fun to listen to. Brock is in true form, and the whole band really finds their groove on this track. The lyrics are rather interesting, and they seem like just random thoughts that fit the pace of the song.

“I Came as a Rat” is really close to “Paper Thin Walls” for me in terms of favorite song. There are so many versions of this song, from the original, to the live versions, to the long walk off version… and I like ‘em all. The lyrics are pretty cool, like they just follow a stream of consciousness with similarly sounding words. Also I love the lyric ‘it takes a long time, but God dies too, but not before he’ll stick it to you’. There’s so many lyrics to quote here, but I can’t fit them all, so just listen to it… you won’t regret it.

So we slow down yet again, this time for “Lives”. Interesting lyrics here, how everyone just wants to live their own lives, indifferent to the feelings of others. It’s pretty depressing, but still a good song. Brock goes on to say how we’re alive for the first and last time, how short it is, but how it takes so long, and how we need to live while we’re alive; a good message there. ‘My mom’s god is a woman, and my mom she is a witch’ is a great lyric. I’m pretty sure Brock did everything on this song too.

“Life Like Weeds” is an interesting song, with Brock bouncing back and forth between two distinctive vocal sounds that he does so well. The band definitely keeps up with him here, and they combine to deliver a very good song that doesn’t feel as long as it is.

“What People are Made Of” is a really cool album closer. We start off with some kickass music, and then Brock… well he yells. Unintelligibly. With distortion. Yeah… the vocals are kinda out there, but the music itself really makes this song what it is: a powerful album closer that delivers.

Or is it over? No, see, I have the re-release version of the album, so included are three BBC radio edits and one instrumental, so I’ll just explain them all together here shortly. The “3rd Planet” edit has one changed lyric, and a censoring of the words ‘fucking’. Pretty cool how the Brits do their censoring though. Other than that, the same thing as the regular version. “Perfect Disguise” is completely different. The vocals have a weird, but cool effect to them. That’s really the only change that matters here. “Custom Concern” is a song from Modest Mouse’s previous album This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About. Yes, that’s the album title. It’s a cool instrumental, definitely worth listening to. Finally, the “Tiny Cities Made of Ashes” edit. It’s a lot softer than the original, with the bass not being as heavy. The scream before the chorus, and the chorus itself are slightly changed as well, along with a few lyrics. An interesting note: apparently Brock was dissatisfied with the original mix, and wanted a better version that he said would be funded personally, that he alone could hear. Epic decided to fund it, and it got released in 2004. Thanks, Wikipedia!

So there you have it, the proclaimed ‘masterpiece’ of Modest Mouse. Personally, it’s my favorite album from them, and definitely solid. There’s a few tracks I could deal with skipping during a playthrough, but you should definitely give them all a listen your first time. If you don’t know what to expect from Modest Mouse, I have a feeling you’ll know if you like or hate it pretty quickly.

By the way i know the movie is fiction. And also in real life is there "secrets" like in the movie?

The Arcade Fire’s 2004 release, Funeral, was a brilliant album that plucked the Montreal based ensemble from virtual obscurity. Today, the act is internationally regarded as a modern indie gem. Reportedly titled in reference to the deaths of several relatives throughout the recording of the album, Funeral, is an apt title given the temper of this album. The album explores the complete gamut of emotion from sorrow and despair to joy and optimism. Fittingly, this range of emotion is also experienced in the context of a funeral as a loved one is lost, remembered and celebrated. Crown of Love and Une Année Sans Lumière are prime illustrations of this emotional scaling. Beginning with a somewhat depressed cadence, these songs steadily generate power and the mood transforms to become rather uplifting. Transformation is a clear theme of this album – the band plays with tempo and rhythm to continuously convert the album’s mood. Principally known for high energy anthems Wake Up and Rebellions (Lies) which will likely find their way on your workout play list, Funeral also features tunes that provoke reflection (Haiti) and arouse spontaneous dance (Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)). In the Backseet is a precious treasure which demonstrates the impressive vocals of Régine Chassagne – her voice combined with the string section takes the listener to a place beyond the usual. It is a perfect catalyst to end this 10 song success of an album.

All things considered, the album is purely magnificent. Check out some of Funeral’s hymns (including; Wake Up, Rebellion (Lies) and Une Année Sans Lumière) at CBC Radio 3: http://radio3.cbc.ca/bands/THE-ARCADE-FIRE.

The Notebook (dir. Nick Cassavetes, 2004) *****

reviewed by Natasha Bullen

Tales of romance usually fall into two categories – epically sensationalist or simply downright pathetic. Then director Nick Cassavetes comes along and creates an absolutely beautiful account of a love divided by class in 1940s South Carolina. The film begins in a modern nursing home with an elderly man reading a story to an aged woman. Cassavetes relocates us into the past with the characters, landing us in the midst of a carnival – so begins the story of The Notebook.

Rachel McAdams delivers a flawless performance as seventeen year old Allie Hamilton, a highly privileged heiress with her life all planned out for her. That is, until she meets Noah (Ryan Gosling), an extremely ordinary country boy who quite literally sweeps her off her feet. With such an unlikely attraction, you would think the film would struggle from start to finish, creating a romance never really plausible. Yet the chemistry between McAdams and Gosling is electric and this is what makes the film work so magnificently. Their volatile relationship is unmatchable, fights are always followed by making up. Then the summer ends. Allie’s parents forbid her from seeing Noah again. Allie must go to college in New York. Noah belongs in the country. Noah sees this, so the couple fight and this time actually break up. Their lives separated, there is one question burning in everyone’s mind – is it over?

If this film does not bring you to tears you have no heart. It’s that simple.

(This review was originally published with a score of 4/5. The score has been revised to 5/5 at Natasha’s request. – ed.)

With an increasing number of holiday festivities being held in the home this year, we’re all l

With an increasing number of holiday festivities being held in the home this year, we’re all looking for creative and cost effective ways to spruce up our table settings and create a look that will impress our guests. When it comes to setting your Thanksgiving table, options for the adventurous host are limitless. What are the hottest trends for you to bring to your table this year? Here are a few ideas that will take your Thanksgiving table from ordinary to extraordinary:

Color, Texture and Mix – Match:

In table linens and accessories, this year we are seeing rich, saturated colours. We are also seeing a lot of texture and the mixing and matching of patterns with solids. There are a lot of options out there to do something warm and inviting.

Color Trends

Warm tones have always been popular for Fall and that continues with some of the biggest trends in colour combinations this year. Some of those include:
- Deep Spice and Aubergine with muted Gold accents – Dark Chocolate with Blues and Gray accents – Olive Green, Aubergine and softer greens as accents – Dark Chocolate, Taupe and Natural

Tabletop Decor

- Use things that you already have in your home – pull out your 3 or 4 of your favourite vases of different heights. Use complementary colors of fresh flowers for a simple and stunning arrangement. Fill three or four vases and/or glass bowls with different colors and sizes of ornaments, fruits, leaves – anything with color and texture that will create visual excitement.

- Your guests are all unique – why not celebrate their individuality? Use different patterns and/or colors of napkin rings that match their unique personalities. Are they simple or sophisticated? Fun or formal? Unpredictable or conservative? Show them you care with a little customization to complement your table linens.

- Candles are always a dramatic and cost effective way to make a statement – use votives at each place setting with a name card and emphasize beautiful table linens for a classy and simple look. Or go more dramatic and cluster your favourite candle sticks of varying heights and looks as a centerpiece. Use colors that complement or match your dishes, glasses and table linens.

- Nothing brings subtle sophistication to your table like a well-selected runner. Use one the length of the table plus 12 inches to hang over the edge (usually a 90″ or longer) as the perfect centerpiece. If you are using a solid tablecloth or placemats, make sure to jazz it up with a festive pattern. If you have a patterned look already, use a vibrant solid runner that picks up on one of the colors in your runner.

- Use 2 napkins instead of one with a napkin ring. With a solid napkin inside, and a more decorative napkin on the outside.

When setting your table, just remember: do what feels right for the mood. A casual gathering calls for a relaxed setting. A formal meal should feel that way at the table. Either way, it doesn’t take much to elevate your in-home dining experience. Replacing an old tablecloth with something fresh an exciting, and adding a few simple table accessories can go a long way to impressing your guests. It’s that time of year when family gatherings abound and everyone spends countless hours congregating around the dinner table. With the hours spent preparing the perfect meal, make sure you don’t forget to finish it off with the perfect setting.

Оценка альбома “ Once” 8/10.

2 : Remarquable

3 : Très bon

4 : Bon

5 : Moyen

6 : Pauvre

7 : Minable

‘04 Topps Retired Signature Edition was a real hit or miss product. Boxes only contained 5 packs with an uncirculated autograph within each pack. I only opened one pack and pulled a Rollie Fingers auto while I was eating lunch at Burger King. Some of the bigger autographs you could pull include Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Ernie Banks. If you were really lucky you could pull one of the dual autographs limited to only 25 copies. If your looking for a quick thrill without the worry of pulling some no name rookie, ‘04 Topps Retired SE might be right for you. Boxes can still be found for between $150.00 – $200.00. I’ve always liked the way the black refractors look.

The Conqueror’s Story is a historical drama and mainly focusing on two famous characters during Chu-Han wars, Lau Bong (Adam Cheng) and Hong Yu (Kwong Wa).

Poster

The story started off with Lau Bong’s memories before he became the first emperor of Han Dynasty. He was a government official in a small village. He did not have any good personalities except for his care to the people that lived in that village. He tried his best so the young would not need to go to work at the Great Wall. However, his power was limited and he could not save them at the end. During that time, Hang Yu went to Lau Bong’s village to gather more allies to join his army. He wanted to kill the Qin emperor to save the people. Later on, Hang Yu found out that Lau Bong had the same idea as him which was to save the people. Therefore, they made a promise to become blood-brothers and Lau Bong said he would raise the flag at Xiangyiang when Hang Yu won the wars.

However, Lau Bong married to Lui Chi (Maggie Cheung), a wise woman who swore with Hang Yu that she would make her husband became the first emperor of the new dynasty, which affected a lot on his life. When the mandarin in the village ordered Lau Bong to gather more people to go to work at the Great Wall, Lau Bong and the people left the village. Unfortunately, they met a tornado and then a big white snake that made their journey got delayed. They could not go back to the village and could not go forward, they got stuck in the middle of nowhere. Lau Bong was so upset, he went into the white snake and started to talk nonsense. Luckily he killed the white snake and later on, it became a legend that helped him to gather people to join in his side.

On both Lau Bong and Hang Yu’s journey to prepare to kill the Qin emperor, they met a lot of wise men. But their relationship got uglier when Lau Bong accidentally got into Xiangyiang before hand. Nothing was the same after that incident which created the Chu-Han wars that took eight years before it completely felt into Lau Bong’s hands.

Storyline: I am rarely watch historical drama because I don’t really enjoy to watch stuffs that relate to history. However, most of you who are fans of TVB should know that TVB always make an exception while making historical drama, they changed a little bit and made it more enjoyable to watch. The story about Lau Bong and Hong Yu is not new but TVB’s writers really bring out a lot of funny things related to the event. (3.5/5)

Characters: I don’t really know about the personalities of the true characters so I basically look at them as a normal drama. Lau Bong is lazy and he seems that he doesn’t really care about anything. Even though, he shows a lot of bad traits but he mainly loves his people and hate to see people dies. Hang Yu, on the other hands, is very strict and sometimes very cruel to others. He just wants to win the war and kills the Qin emperor as soon as possible. I think the writers want to make Lau Bong’s character more likable to the audience. Beside these two main characters, I like Fan Bai and Zhang Liang. They are both on Lau Bong’s side and help him a lot during his mission to conquer the country. Fan Bai is really straight-forward and very true to Lau Bong. He is kind of dumb sometimes but I like his loyal to Lau Bong. Zhang Liang is the wise one. He helps a lot for Lau Bong, especially giving out future guessing to support Lau Bong. (4/5)

Couple:

Lau Bong and Lui Chi: She married him because she saw the possibility that Lau Bong might become the emperor one day. Lau Bong did not really like her at first but later on, he accepted her and they both had two children. Their relationship almost felt like partner in a business more than as a lover. However, they both supported each other in hardship. (3/5)

Hang Yu and Yu Ge: Their relationship is really difficult because Hang Yu’s advisor warned him that she might cause the problems on his journey. However, their relationship is not really interesting. And their conversation is very boring, they just keep repeating the same lines over and over again. (2.5/5)

Casts: I really like Adam Cheng in comedy series. This is not a comedy but his acting is really silly and funny. He portrays the character very well. Kwong Wa also does good on his part. He looks so mean and scary when he kills the enemy. (3.5/5)

Costume/Make-up: Good. I like the make-up for the soldiers when they got back from the war. All worn out and tired. (3.5/5)

Music: Not bad, but not really my interest. (2.5/5)

It seems that Fridays have become the days on which I get lazy and simply post videos. Let’s forget about our current woes and look back at a better day:

No recollection of this famous victory would be complete without a reminder of Totti’s gesture towards Igor Tudor in the dying minutes of the match; Tudor was complaining to the referee and Totti made a motion with his hand that – well, I’ll let you see for yourself.

Cast: Clive Owen, Jude Law, Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman Directed By: Mike Nichols Written By: Pat

Cast: Clive Owen, Jude Law, Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman

Directed By: Mike Nichols
Written By: Patrick Marber
Cinematography By: Stephen Goldblatt
Editor: John Bloom & Antonia Van Drimmelen

The beautiful thing about this movie is the words the language used which is both smart and cruel it’s amazing how sentences can hurt and destroy so much

This is not a film to watch if you are looking for action it’s more about Character , Drama and situations then anything else. This is just a adult relationship drama and everything here is beautiful.

This is a drama but feels more like a horror movie there are so many scenes of emotional violence that this is like watching a massacre. Since there are only four characters it’s easy to get to know the characters even though they don’t talk about there pasts much you get to know them so much that you feel the pain and despair that they do.

The Switching allegiances, mind games and harsh words make this like a british David Mamet film though you can tell the film is based on a play for it’s limited locations and exclusive intimate closed spaces that the action takes place in. Mike Nichols wisely knows how to open the film up to make it looks sumptuous.

Even though the cast is all good the person who walks away with the film is Natalie Portman this is what award winning acting is all about een thought she didn’t even get nominated it was a chance for her to escape her shackles of her teen and lightweight roles to show that she is not only grown but a fully sexual being. From her scene in the strip club where even though she is taking orders she is in total control while also letting herself be completely vulnerable by actually telling the truth for one of the first times in the film. To when she is being vulnerable when she is supposed to be running away with the love of her life. Mike Nichols also knows how to make this beautiful lady into a goddess with color, dress and showing just enough skin.

Cate Blanchett was originally cast in the Julia Roberts role she played the role in the play that Julia Roberts plays but she got pregnant and could not do the role so she was replaced by Julia Roberts who does pretty good in this role since this is really one of the few times where she plays a three dimensional character that is kind of like her usual self of being likeable but also capable of being hateful. There is no cutesy sweet girl we are used to here. Jude Law and Clive Owen were both also in the play but here they switched the roles they originally played. Both are too perfection.

The film also has a beautiful opening scene with the song the blower’s daughter by Damien rice that this movie seem to put on the charts for people to discover which in itself is a haunting song that hovers over the rest of the film

A definite must see
