***STORY*** Man who speaks the poem knows a young lady who’s brothers and father are heavy drinkers, gamblers and get into trouble a lot because they’re drunk all the time.

Dressed in rags, torn linen, hint of the booze
The bet is all over, dear daughter you lose
He’s soakin’ in beer from his head to his shoes

They say three stoned drunks, loaded and jacked
Are bound to be screaming, hangin’ over and cracked
The liquor’s cold, the lickin’s good
But I’d smash them glass bottles if only I could

Old dazed and blank faces, cruddy and red

The Squid and the Whale by Noah Baumbach is an account of the potential effects parents’ divorce can have on their children. Bernard Berkman is a published literary writer and teacher, but has not been able to publish again for some time. He and his wife, Joan, have started to drift apart. And since Joan has started to write as well, tensions mount as he becomes more distant and competitive in light of her nearing success. They decide to separate and their two sons, Frank and Walt, struggle to come to terms with their separation and the knowledge of their mother’s affairs. When a twenty-year-old sexy female student of Bernard comes to live with him and Walt, Walt is drawn to her and questions his loyalty to his current, ordinary girlfriend.

It is clear that Frank prefers his mother to his father while Walt sides with his dad, even though, ironically, Frank has his father’s features, whilst Walt looks like his mother. Walt looks up to Bernard and wishes to be as talented, successful and erudite as he is. At the beginning of the film he appears to be an avid literary reader and scholar, but the viewer later comes to learn that he merely hides behind a pseudo-intellectual facade. He even goes as far as to plagiarise a song by Pink Floyd at his school’s talent competition. The opening scene reveals a lot of the absurd competitiveness Bernard has with his wife, and even with his youngest son, which becomes evident during their table tennis matches. But Joan has been no angel either. She has had many affairs and does not seem to be apologetic about it. Both parents are so unplugged from their children, that they do not even realise what is happening to them. Frank is often left alone at home and he starts to drink as a means to escape. He is pre-puberty and does not understand everything about sex his parents talk so liberally about. He is confused and starved for attention, and starts to act out; his smearing of bodily fluids is a clear cry for help.

During divorce parents often lose sight of their children’s well-being. They are so hell-bent on winning or being right, that their children pick up the bill for their competitive egos. They want to mold their children into screwed-up replicas of themselves, rather than allowing them to become more and more of their true selves. Like Bernard does with Walt. Kahlil Gibran’s words seem so appropriate: “Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, and though they are with you yet they belong not to you”.

SPOILER WARNING: But at least there is a ray of hope. The closing of the film sees Walt going back to the museum to look at the diorama of a giant squid and sperm whale at the American Museum of Natural History. He has finally conjured up the courage to confront the diorama which filled him with so much fear as a child. When he disobeys his father at the hospital and does not aim to please him by calling the blond nurse his father asks for, he finally comes into his own. There is hope that he might find himself again and not just aim to please or become his father. His confrontation with the diorama has a multitude of possible meanings. After having seen his mother and father fight, he has lost his childhood innocence, and that is why he is now old and brave enough to face the squid and the whale head-on by himself. When one sees two loved-ones going at it, other things pale in comparison. It might also imply that he once again discovers that there was indeed a time that he and his mother had a good relationship. And that she was there for him at times his father wasn’t. Hopefully he rediscovers his latent love for her. SPOILERS END HERE.

I must admit that I was somehow disappointed by the film. I had much higher expectations of it having read so many favourable reviews by critics and it having won or been nominated for so many awards. The acting seems quite shallow and frivolous; as if the actors hadn’t delved deep enough into their characters emotionally or psychologically. I’d say Owen Kline, who plays the young Frank, gives the best performance of all. The dialogue is also very hollow, and even though I am a fan of stripped dialogue that insinuates rather than tells all, the dialogue in this film seems full of hot air. There does not seem to be much character development, except for Walt coming to his senses of course. Things do not have to necessarily have a happy ending, for real life does not work that way, but at least it must leave the viewer with something meaningful. Requiem for a Dream ends despairingly for example, but it leaves the reader with enough to chew on, think on, do on. But in The Squid and Whale neither Bernard nor Joan come to profound realisations. One can only hope that Walt’s turnaround serves as impetus for a healthier family dynamic.

This film is like a breath of fresh air amid Hollywood’s bombardment of films nowadays driven mainly by stunning visual effects and thin plots. Junebug, by Phil Morrison, is a simple story that merely relies on a pregnant story line, multi-dimensional characters, quirky humour, what is not said in stead of what is said, and the tragedies of everyday life. Madeleine (played by Embeth Davidtz) is an art gallery owner who meets and falls in love with a younger man, George, at an art exhibition and they impulsively decide to get married a week later. After six months of marriage, Madeleine discovers a retarded, self-taught painter in North-Carolina, who she wishes to represent. Since he lives only thirty minutes away from George’s family, it is a golden opportunity to both pursue the painter and introduce Madeleine to his family. Madeleine goes to meet his family with an open mind and an open heart, but as the film progresses, a lot is revealed about George and his off-beat family. She has to deal with his mother Peg, a matriarch who does not believe she is good enough for George, his docile, introverted father Eugene, his resentful and rude brother Johnny, and Johnny’s highly pregnant, infantile wife Ashley (played by Amy Adams).

When the viewer first meets George’s household, one already casts judgment on his “hillbilly” family: Peg and Eugene seem to have drifted apart over their years of marriage. She seems obsessed with keeping the house clean, even though communication between them seems rusted and full of cobwebs. She is a firefighter, whose domineering personality seems to have silenced and disconnected Eugene altogether. Eugene often appears pathetic and unassertive. George’s brother, Johnny, is antagonistic from the start. He does not welcome George’s visit. He packs boxes for a living and still needs to complete his high school equivalency certificate. He and his pregnant wife still live with his parents. Ashley has a very naïve outlook on the world and is mesmerised by brainy Madeleine’s sophisticated elegance and success.

As time goes by, more is revealed about each character, however, and they become more endearing to the viewer. Ashley’s chattiness seems quite overwhelming at first and she appears like a childish airhead. But the viewer learns that she is actually very well intentioned and has a very big heart. Amy Adams gives a wonderful performance and it is easy to see why she has won and been nominated for so many awards for this role.

SPOILER WARNING: Peg and Eugene have a disconnected relationship and he does not seem to be there for her when she grieves about Ashley losing the baby. Yet, at the end of the film, he gives her a present he made especially for her – a wood-carved bird. He loves her the best way he knows how. Johnny has a lot of issues, but it is quite evident that he is jealous of George. There has to be a lot of family history that preceded his resentment of George. It seems that George is the golden boy of the family who cannot do anything wrong. It appears that Johnny does not love Ashley because he treats her like one would not even treat a dog, but there is a scene in the film where he tries to videotape a documentary about Meerkats for her, because it is her favourite animal. He would not have tried to videotape it, if he did not care for her at all. SPOILERS END HERE.

Madeleine, together with the viewer, comes to learn more and more about George as well. He is not without fault, reflected in the scene where he resents Madeleine for choosing to pursue the painter while Ashley goes into labour. Should she have gone with him? Has he any right to expect of her to have stayed? No issue is merely black and white; there are many shades of grey in between – just like the people in the film. They are not entirely bad or entirely good, they are human.

It is shocking how some of these characters interact with one another. But they love each other the best way they know how. Oprah always says, “when you know better, you do better”. This film made me think a lot about relationships. How is it possible that people drift so far apart? There must have been a time when the couples were madly in love with one another. It is sad how easily people become disconnected and regress into not communicating about issues. Madeleine and George are at that stage where they do not know each others’ shadowy side yet. They have a vibrant and energetic sex-life and are blindly in love, but one has to wonder: how long will this last? Did they know enough of each other before they got married? Is the basis of their relationship strong enough to withstand the intrusions of everyday life? One can only hope.

Although Green Day are not the most requested artist we carry, they are popular with a wide range of ages, their ability to engage the listener with songs written with true feeling, and a talent to deliver outstanding tracks time and time again make them irresistable to the ears of millions of fans around the world.

As a Green Day fan myself, following them through the years, I was lucky enough to see them at the o2 a few weeks ago, this was only my second time seeing them, my first being back in 2005 when they made an outstanding appearance at Milton Keynes. The experience was somewhat amazing, but that’s another story for another day!

The next release from the album ’21st Century Breakdown’ is the title track ’21st Century Breakdown’, a classic Green Day track taking you on a musical journey from start to finish. Billie and the band do not fail to deliver in this amazing track, which features a fantastic quiet verse, loud chorus dynamic. I think this is one of Green Day’s best tracks yet. Dare I say, I detect a hint of Beatles like sound in the album especially in the song ‘Last Night on Earth’. I know they will never replicate the sucess of the Beatles, and nor will they ever capture the full sound of the Beatles, but they certainly aspire to them and I would say the Beatles heavily influenced them at some stage. A feeling which is also felt by the blog Mog http://mog.com/MusicRX/blog/1486061 where you can hear ‘Last Night on Earth’

LƯU Ý:

Theo kinh nghiệm của tác giả, thì việc cài đặt chắc chắn ít nhiều sẽ bị ảnh hưởng bởi các chương trình quản lý và diệt vi-rút hiện ny vì việc cài đặt đòi hỏi quyền truy cập cao nhất (Administrator) cũng như chương trình có một số module mà các chương trình chống vi-rút sẽ liệt kê vào danh sách “đặc biệt cần quan tâm”. Vì vậy để cài đặt được suôn sẻ, đối với các bạn không rành nhiều về máy tính thì các bạn hãy tạm thời ngắt kết nối mạng nếu có và tạm tắt chương trình diệt vi-rút sau khi cài đặt xong thì sẽ mở lên lại. Sau khi cài đặt xong, bạn phải bỏ CD-ROM 1 vào để xác nhận chương trình bạn cài đặt là từ CD-ROM gốc (việc này chỉ diễn ra 1 lần cho tới khi bạn cài mới lại hệ điều hành mà thôi).

Các bạn download về giải nén ra 3 file CCD, IMG và SUB (2 CD tức là 6 file). Cần mount file CCD lên đĩa ảo DAEMON (sẽ được hướng dẫn ở cuối bài) để cài đặt. Chọn chế độ cài đặt là Full, cần khoảng 1.6 GB dung lượng còn trống trên ổ đĩa. Không nên thay đổi đường dẫn mặc định. Sau khi cài xong, bạn nhớ cài thêm QUICKFind (bắt buộc) khi được yêu cầu. Sau khi cài đặt xong, khoan chạy LDOCE4 đã.

Gặp lỗi này là do bạn đã vô tình xóa mất tập tin cấu hình SecuROM (một kỹ thuật chống sao chép dữ liệu nhằm bảo vệ bản quyền) trên máy tính. Lỗi này cũng có thể khắc phục hoàn toàn bằng cách download tập tin sửa lỗi tại:

Bueno hace unos días acabé de verme la serie, así que aquí os dejo una rewiew de la serie.

Sinopsis:

El Mirai es un crucero del tipo Aegis, que sale de Japón hacia el Pacifico, para encontrarse con el resto de la flota Japonesa y la Americana para hacer unas obras militares conjuntas.

Pero todos estos planes se van al traste al entrar el Mirai en una extraña tormenta, ya que cuando salen de la densa niebla, se topan con 2 barcos japoneses de un modelo desconocido para todos ellos, excepto para uno de sus tripulantes que es un experto en la historia militar japonesa, por una parte anonodado ante la joya que está viendo y por otra acojonado, informa a sus superiores que los modelos  barcos que estan avistando son del periodo se la WWII.

El Mirai huye rápidamente del lugar, para no tener problema con los 2 barcos “no identificados”, unas horas más tarde topan con un avión que se ha estrellado en el mar, en el que aún está el soldado en su interior, al que rescatan, este hecho que no ocurrió en realidad tendrá una gran repercusión en el futuro de todos, y todos se plantean que deberían hacer respecto a todo y que cojones hacen en esa era.

Crítica personal

Un anime que ya es algo antiguo, pero que vale la pena, y más viendo la animación que tiene, aunque he de confesar, que el final no es precisamente bueno.
No obstante a mí me enganchó casi desde el principio.

La banda sonora va de lujo con el anime, podéis verlo con el 2º video.

Otra cosa es que este anime es una excepción ya que los japoneses no se han centrado nunca en realizar una anime que influya muy de lleno en la WWII, si bien es cierto podemos encontrar alguna OVA por ahí suelta y muy antigua, es díficil dar con algo que merezca la pena.

Carey and I are having very different evenings.

I had a long day at work and couldn’t get home in time to accompany her, Murph, and our friend Rich to Eli’s hometown of Schenectady to a theatrical production comprising 5 actors playing over 150 roles— a comedic reinterpretation of the Hitchcock film, The 39 Steps.

Eli and I are holding down the fort, enjoying snippets of the evening via text message. The last informed me that they are heading in to Act II after an unpleasant Pinot Grigio experience during intermission. It read:

Hun we just had the most revolting pinot grig in intermission. Veneto. Like rotted apples. Murph had to take it like a shot. Best $5 I’ve ever spent!

Luckily I am drawing from a slightly cleaner lexicon to describe the Barbara Thomas Pinot Noir I am enjoying tonight.

My bottle of BTW Vigna Giovani Pinot Noir came from Winebid.com (I have a bottle of the Pinot Gris on the way), which as of late has been a phenomenal source of new wines for C+C. I was not familiar with the Barbara Thomas Wines, but was sold by their modest website and its uncomplicated focus on wine, family, and ground on which both are grown.

BTW’s debut vintage, the ‘05 Pinot Noir, is loaded with life—I wish I had another bottle to lay down for 5 years. There is a nice transparent vibrancy in the glass that displays a kaleidoscope of colors—garnet at the core, rustic brick tones toward the rim, and flashes of vibrant purple with a swirl.

The nose is richly floral. I was reminded of the jasmine and vanilla from Carey’s Bond No. 9, Saks Fifth Ave perfume and the tuberose-scented Tocca Rodolfo candle next to our bed, which I discovered used to be considered a funeral flower.

The nose continues to open with amazing complexity: hints of watermelon, strawberry, cherry, and a cranberry tartness. There’s also a clear vegetal component similar to rhubarb.

At the initial pour, with no time in open air, my palate was met with an edgy brininess that was so classically Pinot Noir. I never like to pass up that first taste—it can be so telling, often highlighting key flavors and textures that quickly fade to a secondary role as the fruit swells. Minerality is such a crucial element in good Pinot Noir, it was comforting to experience it in such slaty (as in bluestone) excess.

Without much coaxing, pepper, tobacco leaf, and mixed red and black fruit flavors build, almost challenging the more delicate nose, dressing the mouth with an amazingly chewable structure. The underlying sweetness perfectly contradicts the savory brine undertones creating a mouth-watering response.

I trust wines that leave a phone number on the rear label—it doesn’t happen often in the age of drunk dialing… Hey, one day I just might call. Perhaps there’s a chance Barbara or Thomas might answer, being the growers’ kids, of course.

Elaboración: Todas las variedades fermentan por separado con una maceración en los propios hollejos de 15 días con el fin de obtener la mayor cantidad de polifenoles. Envejecimiento de la Garnacha y la Cariñena en barrica de roble francés, y la Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot y Tempranillo meses en barricas de roble americano. Sin filtrar, permanece en botella un corto tiempo en bodega.
Nota de cata: Color cereza, ribete granatoso, capa media-alta, fina lágrima ligeramente tintada. Aromas intensos de fruta negra madura (compota de moras) con ligeros toques de fruta roja, destacan suaves notas alcohólicas, intensos tostados pero resultan agradables por su elegancia y potencia, suaves taninos, especiado, balsámico y mentolados intensos, notas de cuero húmedo, sotobosque y suave fondo mineral. Potente entrada en boca que sigue en su recorrido bien expresivo, de cuerpo medio-alto, intensos tostados pero pulidos y bien integrados, finas notas especiadas, sabroso y agradable de beber con ligeras notas amargosas que aportan buena estructura al conjunto y combinan bien con la excelente acidez, persistente. Final largo, postgusto fruta negra madura y retronasal ahumado.
