Rory Cellan-Jones, BBC’s technology editor, gave us a lecture on, well, what was it on? Essentially, he made the points that many of the other online lecturers had made before, through no fault of his own, of course. The media is changing, journalists need many skills, the world will soon end, etc. He also, however, cast doubt on the lasting impact of all these technomologies. Is it a revolution? Or is it just a fad? Most signals point somewhere in the middle; these new technofandangos will change the media, but they may also make us realise the value of professional journalism.

A glut of unreliable blogs and breaking news tweets will, hopefully, lead to a realisation of how precious and essential the careerists in journalism are. This has already been touched on before on this blog, and it was not the focus of Rory’s talk, so I present to you the stand out point from the lecture.

Rory, a busy man indeed, did not have the time to make a new powerpoint presentation from the one he made for the same talk last year. Consequently, all the headers were 2008. In most subjects you would not think this would matter. A talk on the Bayeux Tapestry would not change much in a year; “Still a tapestry, folks. Oh no wait, it’s…no, it is still a tapestry.” Surely these exciting revolutionary changes in the media world would render anything more than 11 days old antiquated and useless? Surely. Well, apparently not. Rory found it fairly easy to tell us about the exciting changes in the media from a year old script. Twitter was Twitter then and it is Twitter now.

For next year, if he finds the time to change the titles, the journalism students will be none the wiser, unless of course the interweb implodes and all copy is done by candlelight with quills. I think he would need to start from scratch if that were the case.

Police are investigating Fabolous and his entourage for a car stolen in early January of this year in an upscale Atlanta hotel. According to Channel 2 Action News, Atlanta police claim that Fabolous’s crew stole a 2008 Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder. The rare vehicle was only 1 of the 2 brought into the United States last year.

Surveillance footage shows two members of Fabo’s crew approaching the bellman and receiving keys to the Lambo. They then hop in it and drive away as if it was their car and it was just a daily exit for them. Fabolous and the rest of his crew would then follow behind them in a minivan making Fab well aware that they had stolen the car. After some investigation and promising Fab no jail time if he told the location.

Although investigators tried to sue the rapper and his gang for criminal charges once the car was discovered, Attorney Paul Howard cited the investigators and claimed he would not go back on his promise.

The actual Lambo owner Eric Vargosko is now pressing charges on the hotel for giving away his rare car while asking for no kind of proof or identification. The Intercontinental hotel has put out the statement, “We hold the safety, comfort and well-being of our guests and employees as our top priority and concern. We have taken several measures, including heightening security, so that a repeat of this incident does not happen.”

This is not the first time Fabo’s goons have been accused of robbing people. In October of 2006, Fabolous’ gang was caught on camera snatching a $50,000 dollar chain right off the neck of the Boston Celtics NBA player Sebastian Telfair. That night would later on escalate to the result of Fabolous being shot.

We went and saw Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs we saw in the theater but chose not do to 3D because my kids hate having the glasses on and in 3D if you take your glasses off the screen is blurry… plus 3D costs more. I was the only person in my family excited to see the movie. I read the book growing up and was thinking it would be cool. I felt it was sort of a let down. Do not get me wrong the movie wasn’t horrible but I do not know that I will buy it.. Only time will tell though. I would give the movie 3 stars. My kids and husband felt pretty much the same way although my kids really loved all the yummy food and scientific stuff. The story was a bit weak though I think the essence of the book still shone through.

I saw both The Kung Fu Panda and WALL·E in the theater. At the time I probably would have said 4 1/2 stars for The Kung Fu Panda and 4 stars for WALL·E. Since I now own them both on Blu-ray and watch them quite often I would now have to say I rate them both 5 stars.

The Kung Fu Panda, is not only likable it is down right adorable. From the witty humor to the fantastic animation it is a solid movie. The story also is a good one with a good moral though I do not know if children grasp that level of it. I know my kids just think a big fat panda bear saying HI-YAH is hilarious.

WALL·E, on the other hand on first viewing was a bit depressing to me even though my kids thought it the most fantastic movie ever I was a bit annoyed. I think because I usually watch animation movies to escape the real world and this movie just made me think more about real things. It is a very deep movie. It delves into our world and how we are as people. Of course most kids won’t get this either. My two love it because there are robots and spaceships. Since it is Pixar you know the movie is Gold anyway.. or at least I do. Now that I have watched it a gazillion times I think my mind has kind of learned not to think on the things and just watch it for the silly parts, making it a more enjoyable experience.

Up, which is also a Pixar movie, is a great film. We saw it in the theater and at that time I would have given it 4 stars but now that we own it on Blu-ray I have to say 5 stars. It has a deep story ( more so for the opening of the film.) But it is a light-hearted, sweet, family friendly movie. I will say that my oldest child got the depth of the beginning in a way.. She wanted to know why the lady couldn’t have a baby.. My son not so much but he is very frightened by the “mean” dogs.  Overall, I give it 5 stars and I think right now it is the family’s # 1 pick.

Bolt, my daughter and I saw in the theater. She loved it I thought it was so-so. At the time I would have given it 2 1/2 to 3 stars.  Since then we have bought it on, can you guess? Yep, Blu-ray. After re-watching it, I think I would give it 3 1/2 to 4 stars. I think the casting of the voice of the lead girl (Miley Cyrus) was a bad choice. Her voice is kinda raspy and deep and for some reason it really annoys me. However, I LOVE the hamster’s voice – I think it goes perfect. The storyline was not too bad but at times a bit cheesy to me. Overall still good enough to watch. FYI – My son is very afraid of the green-eyed man.

Man kan ikke anmelde en film, man indrømmer at have grædt til. Den slags holder man for sig selv, da for stærk affekt hos anmelderen ikke kan forenes med et skarpt blik og den objektivitet, som skribenter af denne genre kan lide at bryste sig af. Man kan godt anbefale en film, man indrømmer at have grædt til.

En stilfærdig gatekeeper
Vi er i kisteilæggerbranchen på landet i Japan. En service til dem, der har råd til at betale sig fra en opgave, der tidligere blev varetaget af familien, men nu er outsourcet til uglesete, habitklædte arbejdere. Hovedpersonen Daigo mister sit job som cellist i Tokyo og tager med sin kone tilbage til sin afdøde mors gamle hus på landet. Han vælter mere eller mindre tilfældigt ind i et job som kisteilægger.

Der er tale om en rejse tilbage til fortiden, til alt det, der er efterladt utygget på vejen mod succes. Daigo tager på en indre og ydre rejse tilbage til sin fortid og finder, at det er i grænselandet mellem liv og død, at livet føles allerstærkest.

Casualties of film making
Filmen rummer absurde glimt, og det er noget af et kunststykke at lave en smagfuldt udført kisteilæggelsesscene af liget af en ung kvinde, hvor kimonoen skjuler, at det (også) er en mand, således at absurditeten i de levendes sorg og fortrængninger og ”den dødes sidste vilje” kommer til sin ret. Daigos arbejdsgiver opsummerer med selvfølgelighed dette paradoks, da han med nydelse fortærer en bid rogn: de levende lever af de døde for ikke selv at dø.

Alligevel sender jeg hermed en tanke til de eneste virkeligt døde i denne film om døden: de dyr, der – friterede, grillede eller rå – tjente til at illustrere denne pointe.

Kitchen zink?
Filmen trækker på realisme, men er samtidig for bornert til at kalde opkast for opkast. Det hedder i stedet ”skuespiller kaster ansigtet ud i kanten af billedet så opkast lander i køkkenvasken off screen”.

Her – på kanten af de fortrængte kropslige reaktioner – befinder filmens tema sig også. Den handler om det moderne menneskes fortrængninger, en udefineret længsel efter noget autentisk og om de få, der tør følge den, om rodløshed og om at finde hjem, om (japansk) fåmælthed og om at sende et stenbrev, når ord alligevel ikke ville have slået til.

Lost…
Denne film rummer hist og her elementer, der får mig til at føle mig temmelig utilstrækkelig i forhold til at afkode østasiatisk filmkultur. Eksempelvis opfatter jeg brug af slowmotion omkring en stærk nøglescene som smagløs. I forhold til hvor subtil filmen ellers er, kan jeg ikke få denne afkodning til at passe, og den gnaver som et stenbrev i skoen.

Jeg har en smule svært ved den passage der – ude af det øvrige plot – viser Deigo sidde på en grøn bakke (jep, den fra filmplakaten) og spille cello med et henført udtryk i ansigtet krydsklippet med en stærk, følelsesmæssig scene. Denne form for montageklipning giver mindelser om Bollywoods melodramatik, selvom jeg egentlig forstår den kølige, langsomme film med den generte kameraføring langt fra denne form for følelseskraftudtryk.

Mange scener er afdæmpet smukke a la Ki-Duk Kim, men andre steder kommer mine kulturkoder igen til kort. Det gælder eksempelvis en bedemands tumpede gang, der klart imiterer en figur eller type, jeg tror, at filmen formoder, at jeg kender, overdreven komisk ansigtsmimik og et dramatisk klip i en ellers afdæmpet film.

Disse ting stikker dog kun i øjnene, fordi filmen i øvrigt er en underfundig , glat sten.  Se den og send et stenbrev til en du holder af.
