Here we are again reminiscing. A never released album. But here it is, a remembrance to sweet, sweet

Here we are again reminiscing. A never released album. But here it is, a remembrance to sweet, sweet Melissa.

It all happened in the Molenschot Mode store, people dropped in all the time for a chat and a tea. Sitting outside on a wall before the shop, Melissa Molenschot and Wouter Bijl contemplated starting a band of their own. Wouter wanted to be a rockstar ever since his experiences with the band Lazy and Melissa had songs and ideas she couldn’t quite get into the Furtips / Autorace. When Mary van Beuningen started to hang out in the shop and Melissa discovered she played bass the band was nearly formed. Finally Miriam Kuijpers joined as the drummer and they were ready to go.

Careful beginnings

At first they named themselves “The Huhu’s”, but very soon it became “Sex Girl Patrol and Sexboy” after the famous Kids In The Hall sketch.
Then there were the arduous rehearsals. Wouter and Miriam had no significant musical training. Miriam had played bongo’s at a campfire, but that’s about it. Melissa had played bass for quite a while, but was fairly new to the guitar. She did get a gothic flying V for her birthday earlier that year and studied very hard. To make things worse, initially, instead of rehearsing, tea, chat and wine took a major part of the precious rehearsel time.
To create some structure, Melissa wrote parts for everyone and soon things started to fall into place.

On stage

Only 3 months later they performed for the first time in the cellar of Plaatsmaken in Arnhem.
A smashing gig. The audience went wild. Wouter later told me Melissa brought a bag of clothes to dress the band. “Just put on this shirt and make shure to bring those pants and shoes”.

Sex Girl Patrol at Plaatsmaken

On “Queen’s Day” 2009-04-30, their second gig took place before a wild crowd of students, who cheered them endlessly. On top of that Wouter wore a chasuble from Melissa’s shop, which all in all made it a surreal gig.

Recording & concept

In june 2009, finally, all their efforts were going to be solidified in the form of a recording. Melissa had written six beautiful songs and Mary one. A decision was made: although they weren’t one of the more smooth playing bands, there would be no overdubs by other musicians than themselves. No licks, no lines. No easying out, no autotune. There is something about a band of musicians who are for the first time playing together that is disarming and sweet. I like to call it freshness.

The portable studio was transported to the theater/gallery K13 in Velp, where Dennis Steenbergen and Camille set everything up to record. Dennis was working at the K13 as a sound and light engineer until it closed the 11th of june 2011. The next two days, the 6th and 7th of june 2009 the 7 songs were recorded. Camille, Dennis and Jan Pol, who was also present, were pushing the band to it’s limits. Forcing the bandmembers to explore grounds where they hadn’t been before.

Melissa

Miriam

Mary, Jan Pol, Wouter and Camille

The end

Soon after the mixdown, Mary went back to England to study in Manchester. Diet Schlooz became the new bassplayer, but in november Melissa left the band and another great recording stayed on the shelf. Until now!

Songs

It wouln’t be fair not to mention that since then Melissa has died and that I’m her man. That most defenitely has some bearing on me writing this and probably, secretly, is the reason why I started this blog. So I would be able to post Melissa’s music on her birthday, the 20th of may. Finally, after 4 years.

Cool dudes is a nice upbeat song and contains the fantastic sentence “King for a day, queen for a lifetime”.
Melissa told me that Intelligent Company is based on a dream in which Melissa was coupling Beyoncé to Philip Seymour Hoffman. “Beyoncé was totally: why are there no nice, smart and sensative men”. “So I try to hook her up with intelligent company…”. I think the song has a beautiful melody, going all over the place.
“Mister microphone” is me. After the recordings Melissa told me: “You are mister microhone man”… I’m happy.
“29″ is a quiet song that gives insight in how Melissa felt when she was nearly 30.

Go listen for yourself and remember Melissa

Who: This Devastated Fan
What: Second album, This is for The Actors

Wigan alternative rockers, This Devastated Fan (TDF), return with splendid new album, This is For The Actors; a slick, strong and chillingly cool ensemble cast of heavyweight anthems.

Split into three distinct parts – three acts with several scenes each in much the same way that you might find a grandiose theatre production, This is For The Actors shines a glorious spotlight on the band’s usual show-stealing performance.

Easing their way in with the piano-backed prologue, The Actors, TDF really start the show with Come Home, its punchy riff and stabbing beat providing a dark stage from which frontman, Robbie Cavanagh launches his soaring vocal out into the auditorium.

Drawing their inspiration from 90’s grunge, albeit with a thoroughly modern slant, This is For The Actors occasionally comes across as though Placebo main man, Brian Molko suddenly replaced Eddie Vedder at the helm of Pearl Jam.

Especially in Act 2.

With Middle Class, Robbie takes the nasal-like vocal made famous by the likes of Molko and draws it out into swooping, snarling lyrical musings over some 90mph rhythms reminiscent of VS. era Pearl Jam.

Not long after, we arrive at this writer’s personal favourite, Asha Asha. With a twisting guitar lead making way for a smooth, chilled out atmosphere full of wandering rhythms and delicious guitars, it’s the perfect interval for This Devastated Fan’s bombastically energetic show.

And what a show it is.

From opening curtain to final bows, the band set the dimly-lit stage of This is For The Actors alight with an awesome, award winning performance.

Release Date: May 8, 2009

Director: J.J. Abrams

Stars: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Leonard Nimoy

Runtime: 127 min

Throughout elementary school, my dad would turn on the TV at 5 P.M. to channel 50; the Space channel. That’s the time Star Trek: The Next Generation (or whichever Star Trek TV show it was) would play. I’d make a face and say, “Do we have to watch this?” My dad would reply, “Yes.” Suffice to say, I loathed the show. I comprehend why it has such a fan-base, but man, did it bore me to tears!

If a future me told me that, one day, I’d like, let alone love, a movie that had Star Trek in the title, I would call myself crazy. It looks like I should be calling every mental institution in town; because this Star Trek is freaking awesome!

The brash James T. Kirk tries to live up to his father’s legacy with Mr. Spock keeping him in check as a vengeful, time-traveling Romulan creates black holes to destroy the Federation one planet at a time.

Star Trek is built to introduce a great franchise to a younger generation, and I’m really glad that it’s so great. The viewer doesn’t have to be a Trekkie to understand what’s going on or even enjoy the hell out of it, for that matter. It’s fairly easy to follow, for a movie that has a lot of time-traveling. Even people with little brains who don’t understand science fiction so well would be able to follow this. To me, that’s very cool. Someone doesn’t have to be a Trekkie to enjoy what’s going on, mostly because it’s actually an amazing action movie.

There’s explosions, flying bullets, cool creatures, et cetera. All in space. Sweet! J.J. Abrams is able to bring excellent direction to the feature and some humour to the feature. This makes me want to re-watch all that I’ve seen of Abrams’ work, and re-assess my opinions of some of his movies (Cloverfield, Super 8). He truly brings everything to the table, here; and the movie has some great cinematography and visual effects, as well.

Whilst the film has an excellent pace, I don’t think the story is incredibly impressive. The story is very good for what it is, but it is limited and it doesn’t have much room to elevate itself above a mere revenge story. It has a lot of time travel, but I think the story is only slightly above average. There’s lots of action and some nice drama, and the witticism of it all is very awesome. I think the movie’s strongest aspect are its characters and its ensemble cast.

Chris Pine portrays James T. Kirk this time around, and he’s the great face of the franchise for a new generation. The character becomes suffocated by the shadow of his late father, because he wants to live up to everyone’s expectations. This doesn’t stop him from being very confident and having a good time while performing his duties on the U.S.S. Enterprise. The relationship between he and Spock is a fascinating one. Spock is the main target of the villain Nero (Eric Bana). The Romulan villain is out for vengeance of something Spock did or possibly didn’t do, and that’s what thirsts his anger. Bana is intimidating at the time, but truly forgettable.

Anyway, about Spock. Spock is faced with much emotional turmoil throughout the feature, and it hardly helps that he doesn’t know how to effectively portray – or put into words – what he’s feeling. He’s played awesomely by Zachary Quinto, and I think he and Pine are great to lead the Enterprise. It’s great to watch Quinto, because he reminds me why I spent my time watching every episode of TV’s Heroes (I did that task for Hayden Panettiere, too, though). The rest of the cast (Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, Bruce Greenwood, among many others) helps make the fantastic ensemble. They’re an ideal cast to lead the Enterprise. Simon Pegg is also part of the crew, and his role of Scotty reminds me why I enjoy watching him perform so damn much. He’s perfect for this role, and he brings the most wit to the feature. After he shows up, it becomes that much more entertaining and hilarious.

Star Trek isn’t able to elevate itself above a solid revenge story, but there’s hardly anything wrong with that. This enjoyable film will still appeal to both Trekkies and newbies to the franchise. This is immensely entertaining, a great space adventure, and an excellent action film.

Dave’s 3-Word Review:
…Wrath of Khan

Sequels, prequels, reboots, and reimaginings are a dime a dozen nowadays, but it is really special when a man like J.J. Abrams comes around and redefines each and every one of these categories by blending them into one. Abrams shocked the world when Star Trek was first released, being able to be defined as a sequel, prequel, reboot, and even a re-imagining. This reveal, along with the amazing depth of each of the characters made non-Star Trek fans “trekkies” instantly. For some, J.J.’s work on Star Trek really jump-started their fascination with his past, present, and future work, proving he has quite an impressive resume under his belt. Does his remarkable work have a limit? Did Star Trek: Into Darkness carry the same tenacity that his other works have? In short, yes, but it could have been better.

This film introduces us to the character “Khan”. If you are wondering, yes, this is the same character of Khan seen in the 2nd original Star Trek film, The Wrath of Khan. In this film, Khan is seen as a terrorist, out to destroy the space fleet. After setting off terrible terrorist explosions on Earth and then escaping to Klingon, the U.S.S Enterprise heads after him, with Captain Kirk at the helm. After his capture, Khan persuades Kirk to look into the truth, insisting that maybe he isn’t quite as terrible as he originally seems to be…that maybe there’s a conspiracy?

Interestingly enough, for different reasons than the original films, both Star Trek, and Star Trek: Into Darkness could both reasonably borrow the subtitles for two of the original films: The Search for Spock could work for the first film, and obviously The Wrath of Khan interestingly works for this film as well. Obviously, these films have different plots, but they continually respect the original series. While the first film focused a lot on the original Spock, giving new meaning to the word reimagining, this film was more or less…just a sequel. Which is fine, but it does lose that unforgettable element the first movie had.

Next, if you were to watch the first movie, you would realize a huge difference that it held…character development. Every character on the Enterprise had just the right amount of screen time. Apart from their backgrounds, Sulu had his fencing scenes, Chekov had his ability to beam falling members, Uhura had her mysterious first name. These little scenes made the audience connect with them in such a way that you would be surprised to see. They made those viewers that aren’t Star Trek fans trekkies…immediately. Wanting to see more from these colorful characters, no matter the story or villain…these characters were so amazingly casted and written that it didn’t really matter. Unfortunately, the focus from them drifted in the second film, onto Khan.

Now, Khan is an amazing character, no doubt, and he had just the right about of screen time, character development, and stories that the others did in the first film…but he is just one villain…a villain we’re likely never to see again. Now, those characters that made an impact in the first film were virtually ignored the second time around. Sulu and Chekov were there, but they did little more than sit around. Those are some the characters you should be sold on, wanting to see more and more. Unfortunately, their role in Into Darkness was so dull that I wouldn’t care, and might not even notice at first if they don’t show up in a third film, when only a few years ago I couldn’t wait to see what else Abrams had up his sleeve concerning these characters. Spock and Kirk are obvious. From the start of the movie, you know there will be a large focus on their characters…and there is. That’s fine. But sometimes side characters can be just as important as the title characters, maybe just subliminally.

The acting, action, comedy, and overall “Star Trek” vibe is still consistently in the picture. There is a lot of absolutely stunning and beautiful imagery that will look amazing in both 3D and 2D. This still feels like a very blood-pumping film that fits perfectly into Abrams’s Star Trek universe. Though, if you were to choose between the first and second Star Trek film, I would personally highly suggest watching the first Star Trek instead. That doesn’t mean that this film is bad, it’s not. It’s entertaining, but a lot of what made the first film great was missing this time around.

Dave’s 3-Word Review:
Search for Spock

There have been a few instances in my life where I have watched movies in a series in reverse. Most notably, I watched most of the Harry Potter films backwards, there was an actual reason as to why, which I won’t get into now. Next up on the backwards list is the two newer Star Trek films. Now now, I did in fact see the first one first…but that was years ago. I actually watched Star Trek: Into Darkness a few short hours before I re-watched Star Trek, so for some odd reason, I decided to count this as backwards watching…onwards, James…onwards.

The first Star Trek film was directed by a man that needs no introduction, Mr. J.J. Abrams. I have been a fan of Abrams’s work from the beginning, but of course, you can read all about that in my review of Into Darkness. For now, let’s delve directly into the plot of Star Trek. This movie started off, rather than ending, with a twist…one of the best twists I have ever seen in a movie or series…ever. James Kirk’s father suddenly met with Nero (Eric Bana), a dangerous adversary. Nero is searching for Spock, the Leonard Nimoy Spock…yeah. In the heat of the action, Father Kirk perishes, but not before his son, James is born.

On Earth, James Kirk (Chris Pine) grows up living on the edge of the law, torn about how to live a respectful life without his father in his life. Captain Pike (Bruce Greenwood) finds Kirk in a bar, fighting a bunch of guys because he could, and pretty much convinces Kirk to join the Space Fleet. Enter Spock (Zachary Quinto) being tormented by the other Vulcans on his planet. Enter Uhura (Zoe Saldana), and her resistance to telling Kirk her real name. Then there is Bones (Karl Urban), whose wife left him and took everything with her, including the planet…leaving only his “bones”. Sulu has his fencing sword with him and Chekov (Anton Yelchin) knows how to beam up a person falling in mid-air. This is the crew to the U.S.S. Enterprise. Scotty (Simon Pegg) does show up about mid-way, and he has an equally fascinating background.

The crew is caught up in the crossfires with Nero, the same man responsible for Kirk’s own father. Kirk must learn what it takes to be a good captain, Spock must learn how to use human feelings to produce better choices, and original Spock (Leonard Nimoy) is the glue as to how to make that happen.

This is the episode that was just – ingenious in almost all elements. It was a sequel, because Leonard Nimoy is there, talking about previous adventures. It was a prequel and a reboot, because this is how they all meet and it was starting the story all over again. It was a re-imagining, because they stepped on the butterfly…so to speak…and altered history. Life as they knew it changed because they made different choices. It went through, and introduced you to a range of characters that maybe you didn’t know so well before. Each character had a great amount of screen time (as mentioned above, both in the review of Into Darkness, and the different things about the characters. It did an amazing job making the audience care about what they were watching, and wanting these characters to succeed in their mission…we cared about them.

Nero was a great villain as well, he had the look, the colored themes changed each scene. It felt dark and dangerous in the Romulan ship, while the Enterprise had the unmistakable feeling of justice and even a little bit of light sarcastic humor as well. Everything was done perfectly: the pacing, the story, the characters. By the end, you really feel like a Trekkie even if you weren’t one before…it makes you want to see parts of the TV show, or movies in the series that you haven’t seen yet. It gave a new appreciation into the series…it re-defined everything.

I won’t really talk about the sequel other than to say…the sequel was a great movie, but it didn’t hold the feeling of unique re-defining movie history while at the same time respecting the origins. I think it respected the origins…just didn’t do much more. What I wanted to see in the sequel…was Captain Picard.

‘Stark Trek: Into Darkness’ is the follow up film to 2009’s Stark Trek. Starring Chris Pine (Kirk),

‘Stark Trek: Into Darkness’ is the follow up film to 2009’s Stark Trek. Starring Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Simon Pegg (Scotty) and Benedict Cumberbatch as John Harrison this sequel is an action packed sci-fi adventure.
After the crew of the Enterprise encounter an unstoppable force of terror from within their organisation, Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) leads a group of men and women into battle to capture a one man war machine.

Now just to let people know, I have never seen the 2009 Star Trek film and have never seen the television show. I wasn’t originally going to go and see the film but the trailer really sold me. I really liked the dramatisation of the trailer and the whole 3-minute trailer was great to watch. Without the great trailer, I probably wouldn’t have bothered to see this one.

The stand out in the film is definitely Benedict Cumberbatch. He is without a doubt fantastic and really does give the film the spine-chilling element of drama that it has. His character (without spoiling things and giving anything away) is what makes this film. Without his presence, drama and edge I don’t think the film would be what it is. Another stand out for me was Simon Pegg who clearly brings the comedy factor and even though he is the complete opposite to Cumberbatch, he balances the film out perfectly.
The storyline is really good as well and is straight to the point. There is no smoke and mirrors and you get what you expect to get from this film. Even I, who hasn’t seen anything Star Trek related before could easily follow the story line and follow what was going on without getting lost or confused.

The main downside for me is the length. It is over two hours long and after about the first hour when really good and important things happen, it does start to feel very dragged out. The ending in particular just seemed to go on and on until it eventually ended with some very predictable outcomes. I also think that by having such a great cast with this film, a bar has been set rather high for anyone who comes on board if another film is done, which can be a hard thing to achieve.

The main thing that really stood out for me was the cast. Everyone brought something great to the film and each character was believable and great to watch. Overall, as a first time viewer of Star Trek I wasn’t entirely disappointed and did like the film but I wasn’t in love with it and don’t know if I have convinced myself enough to see another film, if one is to be made.

Crianza 2007

13.5% Vol

Region: Ribera Del Duero

Variety: Tempranillo

Notes: It’s funny how one wine from one year can be awful and another year extremely good from the same bodega. This is the case with the A Cappela Crianza, it is lush with great full bodied dark mix berry fruit. Has great structure and balance between wood and tannins. Some chocolate and toasty notes can be found but not too overly powering. Very fresh for 2007 being 6 years old and I don´t think it will last too many more years as there is a very slight dryness coming through in the back-palate/after-taste. The aroma is wonderfully intoxicating with the deep fruits and wood. Enjoyed this very much considering I was thinking it may have been past its best as the case with the roble. Great surprise….I would consume with some nice not too strong cheeses or by itself.

Value for money: 7.75/ 10

Quality: 8.25 / 10

Price: 5 euros
