This was purchased for the exclusive Can cut (from 1970) and the Mick Harvey track.  I simply do not recognize anything else here; but if it’s on Mute Records – it has a chance it could be interesting!  Daniel Miller used to release records by Boyd Rice, after all!

When I wrote to The Birthday Party 30 odd years ago, it was Mick Harvey who wrote back.  Nice guy; got to meet him when The Birthday Party came to L.A. in approx. 1983.  I always found it odd that he made 2 x albums of Serge Gainsbourg songs.

The Can song is from a film; I guess they were trying to get film placement work (remember the album “Soundtracks”?), as it is an additional source of publishing money; money that could be used to further their experiments – towards whatever end they saw fit / necessary.  Cool.

Seventy years ago, in the immediate aftermath of the German invasion of the Soviet Union, a group of artists and writers in Moscow joined forces under the auspices of the TASS News Agency to help reassure and rouse the Soviet citizenry by producing large-scale posters—TASS Windows. So that is why once every two months, Holy Trinity hosts a Messy Church session where I myself have been an on and off helper since 2010. I put it that way because after contributing for the first time at Christmas 2010, I spent most of 2011 and 2012 living in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. Therefore, I could only attend whenever I came to Stevenage and Messy Church happened to take place. Now that I am back in Stevenage full-time, I have regularly attended and why? Because I really enjoy Messy Church, not only that but it is also a great opportunity for people from the general area to meet each other and put their heads together even if they do not attend Holy Trinity or indeed Church in general.

I also really enjoy contributing to these events because not only does it give me something to do but it also makes me feel like I am doing something useful for the community and for my fellow Church-goers. It also enables me not to feel so shy around children although some of them can be quite shy themselves but then so can we all every now and again. This year, I have helped to make the giant Christingle and I have recently focused on food preparation, making Easter nests and flame-themed biscuits.

It is safe to say I am now part of the team and I intend to continue as long as these events take place. In conclusion, many thanks to the Messy Church team for including me; let us keep up the good work.

I was thrown into my first EVER Blu-Ray today, since in the past we have never had a television good enough to cope with HD. I don’t know how I’m going to cope with normal DVDs after the wonders I just witnessed, with my good friend Stephen there to watch me pull ridiculous faces at how glorious the LA skyline looks in this movie…

‘Drive’

Incredible. Seriously, incredible. I don’t use that term of endearment lightly as I’m sure you will find out after I have reviewed some more movies. This film screamed at me from the opening scene – “Gid, you are really going to appreciate what I have to offer you” and the best thing was, it delivered.

From the opening line of the film, I gave Ryan Gosling a clean slate. Having only seen him starring in ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love.’ I automatically had him playing some kind of “kooky guy who finds himself in a sticky situation and sweet talks his way out of it” – this film had about as much sweet talking in it as it did ACTUAL talking, but I’ll get onto that in due course.

We are launched straight in at the deep end with a beautifully ominous passage:

“There’s a hundred-thousand streets in this city. You don’t need to know the route. You give me a time and a place, I give you a five minute window. Anything happens in that five minutes and I’m yours. No matter what. Anything happens a minute either side of that and you’re on your own. Do you understand?”

Yes Ryan, we understand. We understand that you are giving us a choice. It’s our own fault if we don’t get out whilst we still can, not yours. This is the first of many chances that we, as an audience, get to bow out of the madness that is about to ensue. Recurring shots of a red exit sign will haunt my dreams tonight…

We are taken on a journey of a man of many shades, working 3 different jobs as; a mechanic, a Hollywood stuntman, and a getaway driver…I know what you’re thinking – how can a man juggle THREE different jobs, whilst avoiding encounters from the LAPD? It’s multi-tasking at a whole new level, ladies. He also has time to help out his neighbour, another of our main characters portrayed by the wonderful Carey Mulligan (Pride and Prejudice) who I now cannot wait to see in ‘The Great Gatsby’ with that guy who was shouting “ROSE!” on the Titanic…what was his name again…? I can only see Leo as his character in ‘Django Unchained’ right now in my head, so it will be interesting seeing him play Gatsby, but that’s one too many lines about DiCap when there is ‘Drive’ to discuss. Bryan Cranston’s (Malcolm In The Middle, Argo, Breaking Bad) performance as ‘Shannon,’ the owner of the chop shop our unnamed driver works at, is utterly impeccable – need I say more? Naturally.
If penis statues were erected based on the size of your acting capabilities, Bryan’s would be the size of ‘The Gherkin’ in London. It would also be called “Cranston’s Pickle” – a completely ridiculous metaphor purely inserted to include as much cockamamie humour as possible, but I’ll stop dicking around now because I have a throbbing headache…but seriously, he’s a great actor if you didn’t get that yet.

The imagery behind the contrasting colours (red/orange and blue/green) that we see throughout the film really brings to life the differences in the levels of innocence between our characters. If you watch the wallpaper as closely as I did, (that’s right, I’m a nutcase when it comes to colours in films) you can actually pinpoint the exact moment when a loss of innocence shifts the dynamics of the film entirely. Why am I bothering to tell you this? Because who else can offer you such an in-depth look at wallpaper colours? It’s something not only to look out for when you watch ‘Drive’ but I’m sure that colour will play a huge part in Refn’s new work of art coming out this year starring…well wouldn’t you know! Ryan Gosling.

Now I want to let you know exactly how I feel about this film, but I am metaphorically treading on eggshells because I wouldn’t ever want to ruin it for you and I wouldn’t let myself do that. There is an absolutely beautiful scene shot completely in an elevator, where we get to see what I think is some of the best cinematography known to man. Seeing the light and dark of not only human nature, but also the survival instincts of a creature backed into a corner. It’s…something that needs to be seen.
I’ll say no more and let the scene speak for itself, but it’s obviously still a better love story than Twilight…

Shhh…do you hear that? Me neither… Silence… It’s beautiful, isn’t it? The use of silence in this film really does highlight just how powerful an image can be. If a picture speaks a thousand words, then a moving picture speaks a thousand more. There is so much imagery articulated not only in the musical soundtrack, but in lack of dialogue itself, which brings a whole new meaning to the words you’re listening to. Something as simple as “You blinked.” becomes so much more compelling when there is 10 seconds of silence before it.
It also gives you the chance to really breathe in the tranquillity that hangs in the air like a magnificent eagle, before it plummets towards the ground at 88mph and warps you back in time to mind****-ville. And yet, you can’t help but want to thank the director Refn for doing that to you – that’s what is twisted about it. Fincher does the same thing to you in Fight Club – the journey you embark on with the character may be rough, but it’s so rewarding if you immerse yourself in it.

Hiding behind his tough exterior is the name of the game here, but our main character gets more and more invested in his next door neighbour and her issues, to the point where “things running smoothly” is something he could only dream of. Our driver begins to step out of the shadows and into the light, but for all the wrong reasons…

The film itself seems to be based on one of Aesop’s Fables. I’m going to give those of you that haven’t seen the film the chance to go and watch it before reading on. This is your red exit sign, your red traffic light – you have a choice just like our protagonist, and if you want to know what I truly think about the involvement of this fable in the story then read on…GO!

Seriously, don’t read on unless you have seen the movie…

The fable itself is known as ‘The Scorpion and the Frog’ and here is an abridged version of it.

A scorpion and a frog meet on the bank of a stream and the scorpion asks the frog to carry him across on its back. The frog asks, “How do I know you won’t sting me?” The scorpion says, “Because if I do, I will die too.”
The frog is satisfied, and they set out, but in midstream, the scorpion stings the frog. The frog feels the onset of paralysis and starts to sink, knowing they both will drown, but has just enough time to gasp “Why?”

The scorpion replies: “It’s my nature…”

Relating this to the film without actually spoiling anything may be quite the challenge so I really do implore you to watch the film right now! My ramblings can wait.

The self-destructive qualities of the scorpion ultimately seem to link to the poisonous nature of the creature itself. It cannot overcome the urge to do what it feels is right, whether the consequences are life-threatening or not. If it pre-empts that it is in danger, it will strike before you do. This is definitely mimicked by our character, who actually has a scorpion as the emblem on the back of his racing suit.
He hides in the shadows as scorpions do. He reacts when he feels threatened, as scorpions do. We get to see just how venomous his attributes are as the film progresses, and this in turn not only pushes us further down his path as we continue to watch the trail of destruction he leaves in his wake, but also humbles us to the restraint we see in earlier elements of the film.
I have yet to mention the other factor though – the frog. The frog knows the risks of what it is doing by letting the scorpion ride on his back, but it also knows that surely helping a fellow creature is the logical thing to do. Is it better to do the wrong thing for the right reasons, or the right thing for the wrong reasons?  That’s what I get from the frog, anyway, since it really has no reason to help the scorpion across the river in the first place.
I personally would link the scorpion and the frog to mortality and immortality as well. There are moments where our character’s shell is impenetrable, and others where you see pure vulnerability put forward to you in such a twisted fashion that you can’t look away, and that makes for incredible cinema.

So yes, moving on! I would rate this film very highly on the ‘Oh my Gid’ scale – here’s how it works. A ’1′ on the scale is “That film is Gid awful just like this pun…” and a ’5′ is “GID DAMN THAT’S A GOOD FILM TO WATCH”

I’d rate ‘Drive’ a fantastic 4.5 stars out of 5, for the sheer guts of making a film with such little dialogue and yet spinning such a crazily beautiful web of harmony and travesty. A great watch for any film nerd like myself, but just make sure you watch it in the right company or risk having it spoiled by somebody who cannot appreciate it. I cannot wait for Refn’s next film ‘Only God Forgives’ coming out sometime in, or just after, the summer.

When I found out this news that I’m about to tell you, I was ecstatic!! I was scrolling through my Facebook news-feeds when I saw a status written by a friend of mine who is a huge (huge is a bit of an understatement) Dylan fan.

Before I tell you what the status said I think a bit of Dylan trivia is in order for all those out there who, god forbid, do not know who Bob Dylan is.

Bob Dylan is an American musician, singer-songwriter, music producer, artist, and writer. He has been an influential figure in popular music and culture for more than five decades. Dylan was born on 24th May 1941 in Minnesota, USA. His real name is Robert Allen Zimmerman and he has 6 children. I would say his earlier stuff is the most famous as it is the most iconic but all of it is pretty genius if you ask me. He is one of those song writers who has written nearly every song you have listened to but you don’t know it was him who has written it. For example ‘Adele – Make You Feel My Love’ is a Bob Dylan song that appeared on his 1997 album ‘Time Out of Mind’. Some other Dylan songs you may have heard are Blowin’ in the Wind (1963), Visions of Johanna (1966), Mr Tambourine Man (1965) and The Times They are a-changing (1964).

Now back to the status. It said…

Sometimes when you see status’s like this you kind of don’t believe them. How can you know for sure anyway? Once I saw a status saying the Arctic Monkeys were playing at Reading Festival. I was so excited and then the line up came out and no Arctic Monkeys! But for some reason this time I knew this status was true. Anyway the worlds biggest Dylan fan wouldn’t lie about something like this. 

For some people who don’t know how big of a deal this is, it is a huge deal! The last time Bob Dylan came and performed in this country was 21st November 2011 at HMV Hammersmith Appolo. That’s 2 years since the Legend that is Dylan did a gig in this country. For someone like me who has never seen him live before this could be, and I hope for mine and many others sake its not, the last and only chance to see him. 

So for all those Dylan fans out there I do hope you are able to see him this year and get good seats as well! For all those non-Dylan fans out there just listen to his music and I am sure his genius lyrics and incredible guitar playing will win you over and you come over to the dark side… (only joking this is the good side and you are already on the dark side)

Dave’s 3-Word Review:
Not Totally Tops

If you have ever seen a movie that had anything to do with chess as a main plotline, then you probably understand how the films typically play out. Dramatic to the tenth degree, intense music while playing chess, huge close-up shots of the chess pieces (as if you ARE the chess piece), and let’s not forget the super slow-motion shots every time the pieces move. Okay, that may be over-exaggerating the truth, but you get the drift. Most of the time, these movies are also pretty tense…something in the editors desk was done right for those movies…because when you think about it…it’s just a board game. Checkmate is one of those rare films where everything was done hilariously, and impossibly bad.

Enter Aaron Carlson, a high school lawyer wannabe who just isn’t making the cut when it came to grades. Not to mention…his aspirations of one day becoming a lawyer are shot down so bad from everyone that he has ever known. Somebody seems to like his style, and invites him to a secret society that allows him to enter the University of his choice…simply by winning a chess tournament…that’s right. You heard that right. If he wins a chess tournament, that will somehow win him acceptance into a LAW SCHOOL.

Let’s go ahead and dive right into the facts. This was a movie made by Pure Flix, the Christian capital in the movie industry. That’s not why it’s bad however, in fact, you can barely even tell this is even Christian in the first place. This movie is bad because if you went ahead and drew up the full cast and crew to this film, and researched their role in the making of this movie…you could tell that they weren’t doing their job properly, because each individual part was so…so…bad. There was terrible lighting, terrible acting, terrible writing, terrible music, the quality didn’t even seem to be filmed on an HD camera, in fact…everything about this movie screamed high school video project. The plot was terrible, it made no sense…why is chess a secret society? How does winning chess win you a scholarship…to ANY UNIVERSITY OF YOUR CHOICE? The chess moves were lame, there was nothing that made a lick of sense, and they decided to create a catchphrase, and seemingly wanted it to catch on (“That’s totally tops!”). They say it so often, and it sounds so stupid that you can create a drinking game based solely on that catchphrase.

On the upside…the movie is hysterical…because it was trying to be serious. With a plot so absurd and acting so bad…almost every scene in the movie is hilarious. Yes, you are making fun of every second of it, but at the same time…how can anyone be so bad at making a movie? Did anyone actually watch this before they produced it? When I watched this movie, I laughed so hard I cried, I choked on my pop, and it came out of my nose. Don’t get me wrong…this movie sucks. Bad. But it ranges in that territory of “so bad it’s good”.

What’s the moral of the story? Well it would seem to be to never give up on your hopes and dreams, but what it ends up sounding more like…hey, here’s a way to get into a top Law School while failing high school! What sorcery is this? Chess! DUN DUN DUN! It’s absurd. That’s pretty sad, considering Christian movies, whether they seem Christian or not, are always focused on the moral of the story…this time it wasn’t there.

Be warned, this is on Netflix Instant Steaming. It may be recommended to you if you like any type of legal thriller or movie based off of a board game (like Battleship). Stay away from it. You’re welcome. I just saved an hour and a half of your life.

Les contrôles systématiques d’identification, déterminés par l’apparence des personnes arrêtées,  ont continué de se réaliser suivant des critères  discriminatoires, racistes, classicistes et xénophobes, pendant toute la période comprise entre le 10 mai 2011 et le 10 novembre 2012. Les données que nous avons recueillis durant cet intervalle montrent que :

a)      Il a été relevé un contrôle de ce type dans un tiers des sorties réalisées par les BVODH. La réception des alertes de contrôles s’est multipliée  (avec un total de 1144 alertes) grâce à une ample sensibilisation des voisins et grâce aux outils multimédias qui ont permis à un plus grand nombre de personnes de participer dans la lutte contre les raids racistes. Ces derniers sont devenus une source fondamentale pour le recueil de données et pour rendre visible cette violation des droits et les libertés fondamentales  qui attentent à la dignité des personnes.

b)      Depuis la Circulaire policière de mai 2012 qui a annoncé la fin des contrôles racistes, nous avons reçu 255 alertes qui constatent que les contrôles racistes continuent de se réaliser.

c)       Un tiers des contrôles ont lieu durant les premières heures de la matinée et dans les transports publics majoritairement, c’est-à-dire pendant le temps et sur le lieu des déplacements pour se rendre au travail. Il apparait donc évident que la population qui travaille et  qui utilise les transports en commun est une cible, ce à quoi s’ajoute le critère du profil racial, ce qui rend ces identifications doublement discriminatoires.

d)      Ils se combinent différentes stratégies policières : la discrétion, le spectaculaire et l’entrave à la circulation. Bien qu’elles puissent paraitre contradictoires, elles se combinent afin de transmettre un message différencié. Aux personnes potentiellement affectées, il leur est transmis un message de maintien du contrôle,  de harcèlement, de criminalisation et d’isolement. Tandis qu’au reste de la population,  c’est un message de « normalité », de prévention de la délinquance et de sécurité qui est transmis.

e)      L’hétérogénéité des contrôles dénoncée dans le rapport antérieur persiste. Bien que les identifications aient fait plus de bruit, ce sont les actuations discrètes qui sont majoritaires, 58 % des contrôles observés ont été réalisés par des policiers en civil, ce pourcentage ayant augmenté depuis la publication de la Circulaire X/2012.

f)       La participation des employés des entreprises de sécurité privée persiste. Dans quelques gares routières, une coordination de ces derniers avec les agents de police a même pu être observée.

g)      A mesure qu’avance la remise en question et le rejet public et direct de leurs pratiques, la police renforce son discours centré sur la nécessité de maintenir la sécurité de combattre la délinquance.

h)      Les contrôles racistes ont des conséquences dévastatrices dans la vie quotidienne de ceux qui en souffrent : le traitement des personnes arrêtées est systématiquement humiliant et dégradant, et dans de nombreux cas également violent.  En plus d’associer la migration avec la délinquance,  ils provoquent de la peur, ils détériorent leur vie, ils empêchent la libre circulation dans les espaces publiques, et ils violent le droit à la non-discrimination. Les personnes détenues sont privées de liberté et ceux qui sont finalement expulsés voient leurs projets de vie brisés.

Le discours institutionnel s’est adapté aux différentes conjonctures.  On distingue trois périodes différentes :

a)      L’invisibilisation : Jusqu’en 2009, les contrôles racistes étaient à peine connus.

b)      La négation : le gouvernement du PSOE nie leur existence même sous les preuves.

c)       La normalisation : le gouvernement du PP.

Les « contrôles d’étrangers » prétendent s’inscrire dans des opérations générales de sécurité citoyenne dans lesquelles cependant le caractère discriminatoire subsiste, et le lien entre migration et délinquance se développe.

La dénonciation sociale et les pratiques de désobéissance civile ont joué un rôle important dans le processus de rendre visible ces contrôles.  La défense de la société face au racisme institutionnel a revêtu  de très diverses formes : les actions directes de rejet des raids, empêchant même que quelques-unes se réalisent, la compilation d’informations avec l’objectif de démontrer leur existence, la pression face aux institutions et, récemment, la présentation d’une action en justice pour violation des Droits de l’Homme pour les sanctions interposées à ceux qui les défendent. Les ripostes sociales, la force de « ceux d’en bas », ont obligé le pouvoir à changer son discours.

La pression sur les personnes qui dénoncent les contrôles racistes et l’entrave au travail d’observation et de documentation de ces pratiques s’est poursuivie. La persécution de ceux qui répondent au racisme institutionnel a augmenté.

Les raids racistes ont été utilisés comme arme de choc dans la querelle politique entre les deux partis majoritaires.

Les syndicats policiers se sont prononcés à plusieurs reprises sur leur exigence de garanti de la sécurité juridique des agents quant à ces actions qu’ils savent illégales.

L’impunité s’installe : la publication de la Circulaire X/2012 et la reconnaissance explicite d’une pratique discriminatoire et illégale n’impliquent pas la fin de cette dernière.  Cela n’entraine pas non plus la responsabilité des chargés publics,  ni la réparation des dommages causés aux personnes dont les droits et les libertés ont été violés,  et cela  ne provoque pas l’élimination des plaintes et sanctions interposées  contre ceux qui questionnent ces pratiques.

Le binôme migration –délinquance se renforce comme l’un des piliers qui soutient la politique gouvernementale.

La suppression de droits à la population migrante, tels que la liberté de résidence, de circulation et le droit à la non-discrimination, violés par les contrôles d’identité racistes, font  partie d’un processus de dépossession de droits qui s’étend à d’autres domaines.

Au travers de ces pratiques, c’est toute une partie de la population  (la population migrante) qui devient  un appât  pour permettre  l’introduction de modifications structurales.  Des mesures qui,  par exemple, excluent un groupe du droit à la santé  et qui par conséquent transforme la conception du modèle sanitaire. La légitimation des pratiques d’identifications généralise les mécanismes de contrôle policier et la multiplication des dispositifs de surveillance.

Orange Rhubarb Coffee Cake
1/3 c. butter
2/3 c. sugar
1/2 c. orange juice
1 egg
1 1/4 c. flour (half whole wheat) 1 1/2 t. baking powder
1/2 t. salt
grated peel of 1 orange
2 c cut up rhubarb
Topping: 2 T brown sugar and 1/2 t cinnamon
Oven 350 degrees – grease and flour 9″ square pan
Beat butter and sugar – beat in oj and egg – stir in flour, baking powder, salt. orange peel and rhubarb – mix well – put in pan. combine topping ingredients and sprinkle on top
Back for 35 – 40 minutes

In the past few weeks I have had the opportunity to speak to many young minds, Young for me is someone who has started his career in the last 2 years or so, and guess what I was wrong, I am not old yet, I am still energized and able to relate with the same mind who is at least 15 years younger to me, and that set me thinking. How come? Why? What is defying my ageing and thinking process.

Well when you spend 80% of your time at one place, surely that must be defining your state of mind and no doubt for all of us who are in full time jobs, it’s the WORKPLACE that plays that most important role to define what your state of mind is, isn’t it, Again before you shoot me, I repeat its my thinking.

It’s been 10 years in HCL and what has kept me in HCL for all these 10 years? Do I know?, my peers and managers large number of them have done 7, 8, 9 some of them like me 10 years, MY CEO hasn’t worked outside HCL at all, what keeps so many of us in HCL for such long durations and I started to make some notes for myself to see is it time to introspect.

We always wish Work life could run more smoothly? Work life is like a roller coaster, it has its ups and downs. And while office may never be hassle free, it can be simplified.

I love to say and follow to the core “Keep it simple” – This is about identifying what’s most important to you and eliminating, or downsizing everything else, don’t sweat the simplification process, or you might be tempted to put it aside too, overwhelmed by changing all the things you’re finding too complex in your life.

I Was always able to keep it simple follow the GROW model, set Goals and then smaller goals to achieve bigger goal and here I am still looking for fresh challenges WHY, nothing is complex that turns me away, But it took me a long time to practice but then you have to start some day and I can’t thank enough “Sekhar Babu” my mentor in the initial days of HCL who used to keep it simple and his answers were always in YES and NO , it isn’t surprising He is still part of HCL so what 10+ years, Sirji thanks again..!!

So Pls don’t wait make a start keep things simple and you will start loving things around you,

When people leave organizations and look back clearly on it, it is easy to see how many dreams have gone unfulfilled. Most people leave organizations knowing that it was due to choices they had made, or not made. After giving some serious thoughts I decided to pen down what worked for me and continues to work

1) I work hard, I don’t take short cuts 

So many of us waste time in finding shortcuts , there are no free lunches my friends, just work hard ( again Simple )

2) Have the courage to express your feelings 

Many people suppress their feelings in order to keep peace with others. As a result, they settled for a mediocre existence and never became who they were truly capable of becoming. Discuss  and express there is nothing right or wrong, I am sure as the Spidy said in the Spiderman movie “Whatever comes our way… whatever battle is raging inside us, we always have a choice.”

3) Don’t set yourself unrealistic expectations. 

Remember that the world doesn’t get a memo what you want; you have to make it yourself. And if you set them too high, your day can’t possibly live up to it and of course each day adds to make a week and a month and years.

4) I will not succumb to my own inaction or actions 

I will not let that deprive me of what I deserve I know and i am convinced that I can conquer my own limitations and disabilities to achieve what i have i am also convinced that despite being greeted by failure on many attempt of mine, i yet have the hope and desire in me to be able to get what i want.

5) I have a purpose 

Because I have a purpose (Management Gurus like to call it Goal J ) I will accomplish while i work through this life.

Remember Santiago the shepherd in Alchemist, believe in your dreams and follow it, Passion is very important, you can work in any organization , you can live in any part of the world but at the end of the day you are not happy if you don’t like what you are doing, I developed a passion for making things happen around me, if one man can make a difference so can you so can I, I keep visiting my purpose/Goal/expectations and I am yet to succumb to my inactions, in my teenage I had come across reading Acharya Vinoba Bhave and one line still rankles my mind

“Life is a choice. It is YOUR life. Be conscious, be wise, Always Be honest. In the end we are products of the choices made that the right time for the right reasons”
