The 2012 Football season is upon us and you can almost smell “football” in the air. We would like to have a mini-Homecoming for all Tech graduates at the home football game against Sartell High School. The game starts at 7 pm on Friday, October 5th. After the game we plan on heading over to Godfather’s Pizza to relive some high school memories! With many Cage Family members taking vacations, taking time to be with loved ones, or just taking it easy, Football talk has slowed to a crawl. As with every year the bitter aftertaste of last season has faded and now I’m filled with some optimism for the season.  It’s not that I don’t believe a lot of what I’ve posted previously but Reid, Castillo, Roseman & Banner are here for better or worse and so far the offseason personnel moves look quite solid.

A lot of people are really buying into the fool’s gold of the end of last season but that’s not really why I’m getting excited. For me the main cause of optimism is that it’s a new year and anything can happen.  Teams with quality personnel like the Eagles rarely carry momentum (good or bad) from year to year. Each year is a completely new story. So why can’t this story finally have a happy ending?

I could answer that in a pessimistic voice but I do think the offseason is a time to embrace the most optimistic scenarios out there.  You really can’t watch Vinny Curry get excited in the video below without embracing some of that excitement.

Fact of the matter we all knew the Saints were going to get punished in some way or another. Now I will admit I didn’t see what it all came down to I figured Gregg Williams would get kicked out of the NFL, they would get a heavy fine, and they would lose a couple draft pick. Well those things happened, but what none of us saw coming was Sean Payton’s suspension. Now my opinion stands that yeah he probably does deveseve some time off the field because it doesn’t matter what anybody say’s he knew what was going all along. Same goes for Mickey Loomis’ suspension for eight of the regular season game. And not to mention both are without pay for the time frame they have to serve.

It seems to me that Roger Goodell is just trying to send out the message that no one is above the law, and this does need to be done. However, if is going to do it to one team then he most defiantly needs to do it to all teams. As well as if any team cheats in any way. Let’s not forget Bill Belichick endeavorers with filming other teams defensive plays and all he had to do was claim that he didn’t know and he was let off the hook. The Patriots and all that had to be paid was $500,000 we all know that that is chump change to the an organization that is as successful as the Patriots.

It only seems that the Saints are the target because they are not necessarily suppose to be a successful team. We see it all the time at other levels especially in college. Now since they are successful the good ole commissioner is going after the one who made them that way.

In sum, yes it seems a little unfair that Sean Payton has to endure a year with being on the side lines and without pay. I would have thought that he would have been out half the season not all. But the on all that note the saints will be fine they still have a veteran in Drew Brees, and they are still picking up free agents as in yesterday they signed a defensive tackle. So truth is yes they were screwed over and do fear for what will happen to Payton after his year suspension I truly hope that he is back on the sideline as a Saint in 2013, but in this day and age you never know.
