There has been a lot of bad news about soap operas in the last couple of years. In fact this time last year I was truly worried about the future of the genre. This year I feel good about soaps, but worried about the broadcast networks. Soaps will move on and be fine, but without the loyalty of soap fans, I really don’t see networks having much of a network daytime audience left and they’ve thrown away loyalty that kept soap fans watching the news and other local shows. I think 2009-2011 will be remembered as when the broadcast networks committed suicide.

This year I think there will be good soap news. Let’s face it, the situation with soaps on broadcast can’t get much worse. However, Soap Classics has proven there is an unmet desire for soaps of substance. Sales must be doing well as the speed of new products seem to be increasing. Guiding Light will join As the World Turns on DVD. Streaming online of P&G soaps should happen sometime this year. Online soaps are doing well. It looks like General Hospital and Katie Couric’s show might co-exist. Soaps are showing resiliency. Support them. Buy the products. Like them on Facebook and on Amazon. Spread the word to your off line soap friends. Working together we can make 2012 the Year of the Soap.

UPDATE: We Love Soaps declares it Year of the Soap.
