Sochi 2014 has officially unveiled their new brand (emblem and tagline). This is something that has never been seen before. It is actually quite interesting. To read the information from the link above, it is clear that Sochi is making a point to do something different than we have seen from previous hosts.

Let’s start with a look at the tagline for Sochi 2014: Gateway to the Future. As far as a tagline goes, it is not all that different. Most hosts tend to focus on the present rather than the future (Light the Fire Within – 2002, Live Your Passion – 2016 etc) but the idea that the Games are something special is not new. What is interesting, as noted, is the look to the future and the idea that the Games are bringing us towards this future. Also, it is a direct promotion of the host city. The implication is that Sochi is the way to the future, we must go through there in order to reach beyond the present. At the same time, when looking at this tagline from a nationalist perspective (that of a Russian in other words) it is merely a factual claim. The Games will be held in Sochi in just over 4 years and it is one of the events that the nation will go through as they continue to move on in time.

The emblem however, is what I am really interested in. When I first saw it, I was unimpressed. (Actually, I have to confess, I thought it was a joke – despite the fact that I saw it on the official Vancouver 2010 Olympic page on Facebook – and went to the Olympic website to see if it were true.) But then I looked at it and I read what it is meant to symbolize and while visually I am still unimpressed (it isn’t exactly the most creative or visually appealing emblem ever) it has begun to fascinate me. Let’s start with the fact that it is digital. This is the first digital emblem the Games have seen and it is coming at exactly the right time. The digital age has been upon us for years but it is only in the last couple of years that things like social networking have taken off at the level they are at. Practically everybody and everything has a Facebook or Twitter profile. I personally am a fan of each Olympic Games from Vancouver through Rio on Facebook. With social networking being such a vital part of spreading the message of Olympism and the news associated with the Olympic Movement it makes a lot of sense that it has now come to center stage as part of the offical emblem.

The other aspect of the digital emblem is that it creates a direct tie between host city and the nation in which that city contained. When we think about the Olympics it isn’t unusual to think about China hosting the Games or the USA hosting, but in reality that is false. The IOC awards the Games to a city, not a nation. Sochi is the host of the 2014 Games, not Russia. But with this emblem, there is a direct tie being brought in between the two. The actual url is sochi2014.ru but when we look at the emblem, by nature of the way it is designed, we read across and see sochi.ru. I can’t speak for everybody but I know that I read that the same way I read an city and state address: Chicago, IL. It is the link between the local and the national and with the Olympics, that is something that cannot be overlooked. The role of nationalism is powerful in the Olympics and it has infiltrated every aspect of the Games. This emblem is a powerful, visual reminder of that. Of course, this is not to say that Sochi is the first to combine the local with the national.

This emblem is from the Games held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1988 (also a winter Olympics). At first glance, it is a snowflake, not uncommon for the winter Games. But when you look closer, you can see that it also forms a maple leaf, a symbol of Canada. Not only that but the image is formed from the overlapping of the letter “C” which stands for both Calgary and Canada. There is the overlapping of the local and national in this emblem as well but what is different from the Sochi emblem is that Sochi has made it explicit. It is near impossible to miss the connection.

The link above also mentions that the emblem is simple and therefore able to be customized in a variety of ways. “The opportunity to change the colours and inner-design of our emblem allows people to express themselves — some will transform it into a traditionally Russian image, others will make it ultra-modern by using their own, bold and futuristic ideas.” What I see in this is the opportunity to transform the emblem into a nationalist symbol by each and every individual nation. One simple way to do so that I can see is to change the colors of the letters to match the flag of a nation. By doing something like this, each nation has created a symbol that is at once nationalist and international (the linking of a nation with Russia).

There is so much more I could say on this topic if I look at this emblem longer but I will stop here and ask for comments.

Moradores organizaram um “abraço” no lago

Cerca de cem pessoas se reuniram no calçadão de Ipanema, na zona sul da Capital, para um abraço simbólico – e colorido – ao Guaíba, na manhã de ontem.

A iniciativa – que marcou o Dia do Guaíba, comemorado no último domingo de novembro, de acordo com lei municipal – fez parte de uma caminhada encabeçada pelo Movimento Ipanema – Natureza Humana, que espera recuperar o local como um símbolo da orla.

Depois de percorrerem a Avenida Guaíba da esquina com a Rua Dea Coufal até a estátua de Oxum, moradores fizeram um abraço simbólico utilizando um paraquedas (foto). O equipamento era segurando pelos participantes para fazer um círculo, que depois o movimentavam correndo para o centro.

Astelio José dos Santos, presidente da Associação dos Moradores do Bairro Ipanema, uma das entidade integrante do movimento, acredita que melhorias, como o trapiche recém aprovado, irão atrair visitantes.

– Estamos todos empenhados em qualificar a região para mostrar o lado bom do Ipanema – afirmou.

Senate Health Bill Price Tag, Rosy Deficit Estimate Assailed as ‘Fantasy’

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid claims that his health care bill costs about $848 billion in the first 10 years, well under President Obama’s $900 billion target. That’s for 10 years of revenue-gathering, but only six years of service.

That’s for 10 years of revenue-gathering, but only six years of service, according to the analysis by the Congressional Budget Office.

Adding in expenses beyond the 10-year mark drastically skews the overall cost, making the $848 billion a mere fraction of the long-term price tag of overhauling America’s health care system — and that’s if no changes are made to the legislation during that time.

The additional claim touted by Senate Democrats — that the bill will reduce the deficit by $130 billion over the first 10 years — is also coming under fire as “fantasy.”

Republicans have countered the CBO estimate with a figure of their own: $2.5 trillion, an estimate that comes out of the Senate Budget Committee minority’s analysis of Reid’s plan.

“This is a lousy bill that’s going to cost American taxpayers like mad for the rest of our lives,” Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, a fierce critic of the health care legislation, told Fox News on Thursday.

Part of the problem with the CBO estimate is that it covers a 10-year period from 2010-2019 — however, the health care reform plan is not fully implemented until 2014. That means the federal government is raking in billions in taxes and savings for the first four years without spending on the new program. The $2.5 trillion estimate is for the 10-year window starting in 2014, after implementation of the program begins.

Under the timetable in the CBO estimate, the government spends $9 billion in the first four years, but $838 billion in the last six when the overhaul goes into full force.

The revenue significantly ramps up in the latter half of the decade to keep pace with spending, but the nearly $100 billion in deficit savings in the first four years is not necessarily in the piggy bank either.

Democrats are holding up estimates that show the second decade of health care reform yields even more deficit reduction.

President Obama said in a statement Wednesday night that the unveiling of the is a “critical milestone” and cited one estimate showing the second 10 years would yield up to $650 billion in deficit reduction.

Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, cited the same estimate, telling Fox News that Reid’s bill is “going in the right direction” and yields significant savings.

“That to me is the most encouraging part of this,” he said.

Budget analysts say that the early revenue cannot be fenced off, much like Social Security money is spent despite a trust fund for that purpose. The funding gets absorbed into the general federal budget, presumably to go toward reducing the deficit on a yearly basis.

However, this creates the possibility that Congress could spend that money twice, by using the up-front savings as fun money for new projects and then having to pay the bill for health care reform down the road. Holtz-Eakin called this a worst-case scenario.

“The government’s incapable of segregating funds. You can’t put the money in a cigar box and bury it behind the Treasury Department,” said Michael Tanner, senior fellow with the libertarian Cato Institute.

Tanner pointed to two other “gimmicks” that make the price seem smaller than it is.

One deals with the so-called “doctor fix,” which would be an act of Congress to ensure Medicare doctors don’t face steeps cuts in federal reimbursements. This would cost at least $210 billion over 10 years, and it’s a “fix” that Democrats are trying to separate from the health care reform bill.

That alone erases the $130 billion in deficit savings claimed by the CBO’s latest health care estimate.

Tanner also pointed to the CLASS Act, a long-term care program in the bill that takes in billions in revenue early on but does not pay out in any significant way until the next decade.

“If you use honest accounting … then this bill’s not paid for,” Tanner said. “It’s smoke-and-mirrors accounting.”

The Budget Committee document estimating the actual cost to be $2.5 trillion over years five through 14 of the program also showed $126 billion in deficit reduction in that period. It estimated even more down the road.

But Holtz-Eakin called that “fiction,” since it relies on more than $1 trillion in cuts to Medicare and Medicaid.

He said there’s no way the government can sustain and increase those cuts and expect the program to work.

The biggest problem of all is that the CBO – regardless of how well-intentioned or “objective” it is – have routinely underestimated the costs of government programs – especially health-related government programs – by a factor of ten.

The Senate Democrat health bill includes the public option.  It guarantees a government takeover of healthcare.

We are talking about clear matters of life and death.  We are talking about 1/6th of the U.S. economy.  And Democrats are playing games of smoke and mirrors.  What they are doing is beyond unconscionable.

$1 trillion in cuts to Medicare?  Bye-bye, old people.  In the words of Obama adviser Robert Reich, “We’re going to let you die.”

Liberal Newsweek has it’s “Case for Killing Granny.”  Newsbusters points out:

For good measure the magazine also promises readers to explain “Why We Should Insure Illegals” and how “Health Reform Could Combat Crime” in related articles linked on the front page. More illegal immigration, fewer criminals and old people. What a deal!

Please don’t be so naive and so stupid as to believe that these people aren’t serious.  And I mean deadly serious.

Make no mistake: Democrats are voting for the national economic suicide of the United States, and for the deaths by medical-resource rationing of millions of Americans who otherwise would have lived.

Again and again, Obama has promised that no federal funds would be used to pay for abortion. PelosiCare has language in it that says the opposite. Now HarryCare has the exact same language. 

Harry Reid’s (D-NV) massive, 2,074-page bill would levy a new “abortion premium” fee on Americans in the government-run plan. 

Beginning on line 7, p. 118, section 1303 under “Voluntary Choice of Coverage of Abortion Services” the Health and Human Services Secretary is given the authority to determine when abortion is allowed under the government-run health plan.  Leader Reid’s plan also requires that at least one insurance plan offered in the Exchange covers abortions (line 13, p. 120).

What is even more alarming is that a monthly abortion premium will be charged of all enrollees in the government-run health plan.  It’s right there beginning on line 11, page 122, section 1303, under “Actuarial Value of Optional Service Coverage.”  The premium will be paid into a U.S. Treasury account – and these federal funds will be used to pay for the abortion services.

Section 1303(a)(2)(C) describes the process in which the Health Benefits Commissioner is to assess the monthly premiums that will be used to pay for elective abortions under the government-run health plan and for those who are given an affordability credit to purchase insurance coverage that includes abortion through the Exchange.  The Commissioner must charge at a minimum $1 per enrollee per month.

I wrote an article where I explained “if Obama said it, expect the opposite to happen.” This is another example. Obama explicitly said “No federal funds for abortions.” The opposite happened.

Another item that you will find throughout HarryCare is all the NEW TAXES. Yes, these new taxes are needed because health care is not free or a right like those on the progressive left claim. These same progressive idiots also believe this government takeover of health care is DEFICIT NEUTRAL. If it was deficit neutral there would be no need for new taxes. That’s common sense.

A lista de intervenções significativas que o Brasil terá de fazer para receber a Copa do Mundo de 2014 e as Olimpíadas de 2016 vai muito além de obras nos estádios. O país tem uma demanda de obras em vários segmentos de infraestrutura para cumprir as exigências da Fifa e do Comitê Olímpico Internacional (COI), e isso pode dar origem até a uma nova companhia aérea na região Nordeste.

A ideia surgiu em um fórum nacional de secretários e dirigentes do turismo. Representantes da região apresentaram um estudo feito pela Superintendência do Desenvolvimento do Nordeste (Sudene) que aponta a malha aérea como uma deficiência crônica do local. Um dos principais problemas é a falta de voos diretos entre algumas das capitais.

A partir desse estudo, os secretários locais fizeram cobranças à Embratur para a abertura de uma nova companhia aérea na região, nos moldes da Varig Nordeste. A proposta já foi apresentada a três empresas (Azul, Trip e uma ainda não divulgada), e atualmente depende apenas de uma delas aceitar.

“Estatísticas mostram que 58% dos turistas que visitam o Brasil querem sol e mar. Ora, existem sol e mar mais bonitos que os do Nordeste? Precisamos fortalecer o turismo para podermos aproveitar o que a Copa pode nos oferecer e as pessoas que visitarão o país, mas o transporte é uma questão fundamental para isso”, afirmou Fernando Fernandes, secretário de Turismo do Rio Grande do Norte.

O projeto para a Copa do Mundo é criar apenas uma subsidiária de companhia aérea no Nordeste. Essa empresa terá um pacote especial de isenções fiscais e incentivos da Sudene para operar na região como parceira oficial dos Estados envolvidos na competição. Os secretários levaram às três empresas um estudo sobre da Embratur sobre a malha aérea da região e o que eles entendem como necessidades para a próxima década. A estrutura será um dos pontos determinantes para a concorrência entre as companhias.

“Esse projeto é chave para algo maior. Queremos vender o Nordeste nos próximos anos, com a Copa do Mundo e as Olimpíadas, mas precisamos melhorar a ligação entre as cidades. Queremos que os turistas comprem pacotes para a região, com visitas a diferentes capitais, mas eles precisam ter alternativas de locomoção”, ponderou Fernandes.

O Brasil, ou parte, apagou

Parte do país apagou e até agora estão culpando o tempo mas há quem afirme que essa não foi a causa, independente da causa a questão principal é que o país que vai receber três eventos, Copa das confederações, Copa do mundo e Olimpiada.Em tese quando falta energia de um lado a reposição vem de outro lugar.Exemplo: parte de São Paulo recebeu energia do excedente da região sul.Se isso acontecer em um desses eventos de grande escala de onde vão tirar o excedente?

I make no secret of having absolutely no interest in the forthcoming 2014 Commonwealth Games. The event is already ruining the east end of the city of Glasgow, where I happen to live, with wide areas of land already being razed, houses (possibly of historic interest) demolished, housing developments starting and stopping, and numerous sporting facilities to be shoehorned into place. These, we are told, will remain as lasting legacies to the games, and bring new opportunities to the communities they lie within. I suspect I may be writing of their closure or redevelopment in later years. We can only wait and see.

I happened to mention a nearby sports and recreation facility online a few years ago, only to be told by the locals that it was one of the greatest jokes held up as a success by the developers. According to those who live near it, the main users are from outlying areas, and block the streets with their cars. The local youth can’t use it, because local gangs loiter around the gates, and see off any that try. I can’t verify these claims one one way or the other, only repeat what I have been told as I don’t live in that particular spot, and don’t know anyone well enough to gain further insight.

When the great announcement was made that Glasgow had “won” the prize (and all the others probably breathed a sigh of relief at having avoid this booby prize) all I saw was the creation of a money pit, into which millions would be poured on a promise, with no guarantees but one – that whatever cost was announced would be sure to increase. If they are still looking, the people of Abuja, Nigeria (which was the rival bidder) will be breathing a sigh of relief, and wishing a big “Thank You” to Glasgow for sparing them the future soaring cost of hosting this pit.

With five years left for more of the same, it comes as no surprise that the first announcement has been made regarding the spiralling cost of winning this booby prize. The original budget was given as £373 million, but with cries of “Global Economic Recession”, this is to be increased by more than 20% and raised to £453 million – a further £80 million.

I don’t really care why, but if the recession is the cause, then I’d rather hear that something had been cut from the circus to reduce its cost, not that the Scottish Government, and more importantly Glasgow City Council, will provide the bulk of the additional funding demand.

Just as the council continues to announce various local funding cuts, and has succeeded in maintaining the level of Council Tax demand constant for some years, with no increase in the dip made into my pocket.

Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond hailed Glasgow’s victory back in November 2007. “We will make these Games the greatest sporting event our country has ever seen. They will be our chance to show the whole world the very best of Scotland.”

At a guess, he doesn’t live in the city that will foot the bill.

The really interesting part of the games will come in the following years, as the pro-games camp publishes its analysis of the financial impact of the event, and tells of all the business and opportunities they brought to the area, while there will be another camp quietly revealing the true costs after everything – not just the cherries- are taken into account. The second report will be dismissed as negative and ill-informed.

I wonder who will report on the crime that accompanies the staging of this event, as the cities that have hosted similar events in recent years have warned that an event of this size brings in prostitution, vice, drugs, and any number of organised criminal activities, travelling from abroad and keen to exploit both locals and visitors to the area.

Außerdem hab ich dann auch mal wieder was geschrieben. Jetzt wo die Klausuren anfangen verpuffen solche Ideen leider zwischen chemischen Formeln und historischen Daten. Zwischen gereizten Neuronen und expressionistischen Gedichten. Zwischen… okay, okay, ich höre ja schon auf.

Es ist jedenfalls eine Zeit, in der ich mir wünschte, es wäre schon bald 2014… Denn dann würde auch ich endlich Muffensaußen kriegen und mich zum Büffeln hin hocken. Oder anders ausgedrückt: Was könnt ich noch großartig machen, nach so einem Techno-Super-Gau. Mich irgendwo einladen lassen?

Ist das Gestammel? – Ja ist es!

After 10 weeks of travel for the Elon Admissions Office, I am finally home! Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE to travel and I also love the opportunity to meet so many wonderful students. With that said, there is nothing that compares to being able to sleep in your own bed, having a home cooked meal or watching football while you relax on your own couch. It’s the small things in life that you really miss and take for granted. I’m so excited to be home, can’t you tell?!

On the flip side, being home means a transition in office priorities, duties and responsibilities. Tomorrow our office will begin reading applications for Early Action in addition to the Early Decision applications. I’m very excited to begin reading and reviewing applications from students in AL, AR, FL, GA, HI, LA, and MS. There has been a lot of excitement from students who would like to be a part of the class of 2014, which is spilling over to my excitement to get to know students through their applications. Prospective students of the class of 2014, I wish all luck and peace of mind! December 18th will be here before you know it!
