According to the SDCCD assessment, I am ready for online learning. I have had a bit of experience with the “go at your own pace” classes in college that didn’t require meeting times, but required weekly online discussions.  Those weren’t too difficult, but I am not going to lie, I might have procrastinated more than I should have. Time management might not be my strong suit. The skills needed for success as an online student are necessary. I feel that I possess these skills, though I could definitely refine them. I already use a calendar to keep track of assignments and other events, I am comfortable with a computer, am able to motivate myself to accomplish tasks on time, and don’t have any problems working independently. The only thing that I see myself having trouble with is staring at the computer all day. I don’t know if it’s just me, but when I started wearing glasses, eye fatigue really started to affect me. As long as I don’t wait last minute and try to do everything in one day (or night), I think I’ll be okay.

I watched both of the presentations about teamwork done by Dr. Haycock and Enid Irwin. The two presentations gave valid points about what makes a team successful. Dr. Haycock’s 6 phases of a project made me laugh a little bit. It explains that teams spend the majority of the time complaining and not doing any real work. If teams start the process with defining performance goals and accepting that everyone is accountable, they would probably be able to get their task done much quicker by avoiding all the problems. Dr. Haycock made me think of a team as a relationship. Some of the same things that ruin a couple, (absence of trust, fear of conflict, and lack of commitment) also ruin a team. All issues need to be addressed, if there is hope for success.

Enid Irwin explained that teamwork is the number one fear of students. The lack of control is what causes this fear. I completely understand what is meant by this. Trusting strangers is difficult for everyone, even when it doesn’t involve a team. For this reason, I, like many others, love yelp and other websites with reviews. I don’t want to go to a complete stranger to get my nails done, I want to make sure other people have visited and left with good results. The things I enjoyed most about Irwin’s presentation were the explanations of what a team is not. I have seen teams split up and not come back together till the day before a project is due. If there is no communication between the two sides, they usually end up doing the same thing or going in completely different directions that make no sense when put together. A team is not one or two people doing all of the work whilst the third person has no opinion, or is too lazy to work. Everyone needs to put forth effort.

With all this being said, I hope that online courses won’t be too difficult to keep track of. I think I will be able to use my skills to be a successful student. I also hope that I keep Dr. Haycock’s and Enid Irwin’s presentations in mind when it is time to work as a team. I don’t want to be one that brings the team down.

So, I have been asked by the Almighty Powers of 203 to evaluate my readiness to succeed in an online degree program.  The SLIS self analysis page asks six questions to which the answer should be six yeses.  The questions are as follows:

1. Do you possess strong time management skills?

2. Do you possess strong organizational skills?

3. Are you self-motivated?

4. Do you enjoy working independently?

5. Are you comfortable working with technology?

6. Do you enjoy a challenge?

The answers are as follows:

1. No, but I know where to get them.
2. No, but I know how to fake them.
3. Yes
4. Yes
5. Against all odds and the predictions of those who knew me in my undergrad years, yes
6. Bring it!

Yeah, I know, those first two answers are . . . problematic.  And yet, I think this is going to work, and let me tell you why.  When I was young, I would have answered yes to both of those first two questions. And it would have been a lie. Not a lie told on purpose, but still, a lie. Because in the halcyon days of my youth, I honestly thought I possessed strong time management and organizational skills. Sadly, I did not. And my belief in this non-existent possession led me down a primrose path to a very stressful place.

But now, I am older. And older.  And I know that knowing that I possess no such skills is, for me, more important than actually possessing them. Yeah. I am a veritable Socrates of chaos.

You see, by knowing that I possess nothing, I know not to trust my instincts, go with my gut, or just wing it. My instincts are rotten, my gut is full of coffee, and my wings are penguin-esque. Skills are for other people.  What I need is a plan. And a calendar. And at least two different colored highlighters for every class. Unlike people who can look at their schedules each day and just decide what is going to go where, I need a plan.  A week long plan. A color coded plan. And I need to stick to it.  Yes, of course, I need to be able to adjust to unexpected details that crop up over the semester, but plans without the ability to reshape themselves around reality are, frankly, bad plans.  And I do not make bad plans. Bad plans are for people who possess excellent time management and organizational skills.  I make excellent plans. You can ask anybody.

All this may lead you to believe that I would make limited contributions to an online team. And I can see how you would think this, but it turns out you would be wrong. My need for a plan dovetails beautifully with what groups need for success.  Dr. Haycock lists the five qualities of highly effective groups as

1. Self awareness – strengths and weaknesses
2. Clear understanding of expectations
3. Clear understanding of roles
4. Clear ground rules

Which, by some crazy, random happenstance, are exactly the same things I need to set up the detailed, color coded plans which allow me to pretend to be possessed by excellent time management and organizational skills.
