I must say that I’m fairly new to Animal Collective. They’ve been around for ages and they’ve always been there for me to listen and suggested – on the radio, through NME, Last.Fm etc. – but I’d never really bothered. Same goes with Bombay Bicycle Club really. But through the magic that is Spotify (and of course a little bit of Zane Lowe) I managed to stumble across this gem. God knows how to describe it or what genre to put it under. It is samba, electro, LSD inspired and a ridiculous collaboration of everything else all pushed into 5 mintues. The amount of layers they must have had to make this boggles the mind as it’s everything but simple; I’ve said for a long time that my favourite types of music and nice and simple. But this is an exception. Listen to it and be confused. Very confused.

On minutes 1:48 and 2:03 of this 2012 five-minute promo video, you see billboards of the Southern California nonprofit organization Heal the Bay crumbling down … sorry guys, I guess environmentalists don’t survive the Apocalypse (or is the Apocalypse being brought on human kind as punishment from God because we haven’t been caring for our environment as we should have been?!)

I’ve started to see the signs of the Apocalypse … no, not on the skies, not on earthquakes, and certainly not on tarot cards, but rather plastered on billboards all over L.A. and on YouTube videos. As a fan of Mesoamerican history and a holder of a B.A. degree in Anthropology, I have been keenly aware about the Mayan calendar that supposedly “ends” on the year 2012. I must say that I was actually suprised that it took this long for Hollywood to make a movie about it. Conveniently, they did not make a film about the calendar leading up to Y2K but I guess that would’ve defeated the whole purpose somewhat: how could the world end in 2000 if the Mayan calendar went all the way up to the year 2012? But I guess I shouldn’t be so hard on Hollywood: after all, the film is only the latest incarnation of an ongoing furor of Apocalypse theories (I’m being overly kind: I’m using the word “theory” loosely here) based on the calendar that have been peddled for many years now. However, the film has blown up the profile of such theories way out of proportion; so much so, that even the descendants of the Mayans are getting fed up with it. Chile Pixtun, a Guatemalan Mayan elder, was recently quoted by the AP as saying that ”the doomsday theories spring from Western, not Mayan, ideas.”

Hollywood has a nack for re-inventing and sensationalizing history but I guess that is nothing new. A perfect example of this was the movie Apocalypto, which told the story of the Mayan conquests just before their civilization runs into the Spanish “conquistadores”. There was just one small problem with that story line: it never happened. It was the Aztecs that had a brush with the Spaniards, not the Mayans (the Mayan Mesoamerican civilization and the Aztec civilization existed centuries apart). In our modern world saturated by myths that are spurred by a modern popular disdain and mocking of academia and rationality, facts are sometimes irrelevant. Point-in-case is the term “Aztec” (which comes from the Nahuatl word “Aztecatl”, which means “someone that comes from Aztlán“). Yet, the indigenous people that came to make up what we now call ”the Aztec empire” did not even call themselves that. The Aztec empire was in fact not a homogenous group of people, but rather made up by three main ethnic groups (also known as “The Triple Alliance“) that were dominant over the others at one point or another: the Mexicas, the Acolhuas, and the Tepanecs. The homogenizing category ”Aztec” was actually first used by English-speaking westerners and was widely used by American historian William H. Prescott. In modern times in the U.S., it was later further popularized via the Aztlán mythology that was adopted by many ”Chicano nationalists“. The problem with such reductionist approach, (as with any type of reductionism), is that it glosses over the rich diversity that actually exists and presents a reality that is overly skewed just so it can fit into a particular theory. Don’t get me wrong, I happen to like that the word “Aztec”. Besides, humans, after all, have an inherent need for categories that help us make sense of this world. That is the way we are wired and for a good reason: it helps us identify important patterns in nature. I only wished our western modern “patterns” or “categories” or for that matter our industries were more inclusive and respectful of the rich cultural variety of the indigenous ethnic groups that flourished and still exist not just in Mexico but in all of Latin America.

PS So am I going to go see this 2012 film? Depends. I’m gonna wait for the reviews. I hate watching movies that are all flashy special effects and terrible acting/dialogue.

The Red-throated Loon nests on the small freshwater ponds and coastal lakes of the Île d’Anticosti and the Moyenne-Côte-Nord and Basse-Côte-Nord regions. In the winter, it migrates close to the coastal areas of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, or it will fly further on and stop down, here and there, along the East and West Coasts of North America. A fish-eater, it fishes in the sea or in the rivers and lakes in the vicinity of its nesting place. Its length is 61 to 69cm.

Instead of lecturing on the introduction–part of my larger goals this term to avoid lecture as much as possible, in favor of stimulating discussion that works outwards from the text–I’d like to focus our class time on Petrarch’s letter in which he describes the mountainous ascent he undertakes with his brother, as well as some of the major thematic patterns that emerge in his Canzoniere. I hope to be able, in each of the pieces we read from the anthology, to foreground different features characteristic of the Renaissance, ideally not to overload students with generalizations that we can’t really locate in particular instances. Tomorrow, I want to focus on the way that Petrarch explores his sense of self, as well as the way he negotiates the tensions between earthly desires and spiritual goods. We’ll also be going over the first short essay assignment, and ideally, the class discussion will model a relevant approach.

I’m determined, this term, to not fall into either the 1.) going-over-the-syllabus-the-first-d

I’m determined, this term, to not fall into either the 1.) going-over-the-syllabus-the-first-day cop-out or the 2.) jump-right-in-to-lecture cop-out, both of which so often become standards (usually because we’re so busy prepping courses, finishing syllabi, or participating in the pipe-dream of having all the basic course plans for the entire rest of the term in some sort of presentable shape. My plans for the first day of classes — tomorrow I have Anatomy of a Film and World Literature: Renaissance through Enlightenment — are really to get right into the material from a practical standpoint.

In Anatomy, I’d like to focus attention on the basic content as well as the expectations of the college classroom by having students break into pairs to read and present on segments of a short article from The Atlantic called “Don’t Fear the Reaper”; this should impress the idea that these films do have an important cultural location. Then I want to leap into the major assignment by showing students a clip from a similar set of projects by GW students. I’d then like to ask for some reflective writing, a “letter to self” that will become, by the next class, a draft of the personal statement for the portfolio. Then, for a few minutes, I’ll show them the Bb site and the blog, just to make sure they know where everything is. Homework should be pretty straightforward: reading, revising the personal statement, browsing the Bb site/s, and reading the syllabus/policies online.

World Literature, I hope, will have much the same shape, though students should have a good sense of the college classroom dynamic by now. I plan to put on the board four or five key features of the Renaissance, as discussed in the Norton Introduction, and try to get a sense from the class of what they understand about those features. Then, we’ll listen to the Italian of a poem by Petrarch–perhaps the first Canzoniere, read it aloud in English, and try to come up with a list of ways the poem might fit into (or expand!) those basic articulations of context. Grasping the “plain sense,” as I. I also want to introduce students to the possible alternative 2nd essay assignment they might begin thinking about, as well as the complexities of our Bb site–which I’d love to migrate to WordPress…. Ah, well–the future must hold some new projects!

On a side note, I finally finished my Routledge ABES annotation for Ildiko Csengei’s “‘I will not weep’: Reading through the Tears of Henry Mackenzie’s Man of Feeling.” Yay!

One of my favorite readings of the term, Eliza Haywood’s Fantomina. We had three presentations

One of my favorite readings of the term, Eliza Haywood’s Fantomina. We had three presentations, and the essays the students presented did give us a good context for discussion; however, one student used a non-scholarly source, and I’m pretty sure another didn’t actually read Haywood (at least, he didn’t have the copy with him…)! I’m of the opinion, however, that all will out in the exam. At any rate, we had a pretty good discussion about the piece, especially about how it might be relevant to contemporary American culture–students were interested in the double standard that Haywood is both articulating and, it seems, critiquing; the role of clothing as a sign of identity that can be read and deliberately constructed to be read in a certain way; and the ending, whether or not it was a punishment or a reward.

The conversational direction fo the class was interesting, and given that I feel I’m having some difficulties with my 318, I was talking with Peter and Holly about teaching, the other night. We were specifically talking about how to create a provocative context for class discussion, what kinds of questions or invitations work best to elicit what John Richetti fruitfully terms “sociable communication,” and it occurs to me that our experience with Fantomina modeled something significant–the students clearly had an interest in examining its relationship to their experience, and in this case, that strategy of reading made a lot of sense. In the future, I need to give the “how does it relate to our lives” a little more breathing room, and in doing so, work to shape that kind of reading into something that can provide real insight into the text. I forget that students read differently, are interested in different things; how can that interest be harnessed into the service of more synthetic and comprehensive critique, analysis, interpretation?

Other approaches: Are there any circumstances or contexts in your experience where Fantomina’s actions make sense? What was your favorite part? Least favorite? Sharing my own, starting with an interesting fact, and so on. Of course, I often feel as though I do this, and still the discussion lags. Perhaps I need to reconsider the dreaded “relatability” issue. Ugh.

My professor for a GrC 201 mentioned something funny that i never noticed.

We were talking types of typography, and one of the categories a lot of types fit into is Blackletter.

Blackletter is the Old English style of text, and since one of the first things to be printed for the mas is the Bible, the Bible also had this style:

Blackletter in a Bible

This style is still used sometimes, to show a traditional old look. For example, The New York Times Logo.

Black letter in modern logo

…It also shows that you a gangster…bitch.

Black letter in gangster shirt

In conclusion, the bible is gangster.

I don't know who Curtis is.

In world literature, we went over the Reply to Sor Filotea, which I was incredibly surprised to note that so many students had actually enjoyed! I thought it would be a “meh” reading, but it seemed to strike a note. In future classes, I’d like to be able to spend more time on it, and perhaps at the end of this term we’ll be able to return to it and a few other readings. Two students presented on it, one of whom is distantly related to de la Cruz, so that was exciting. Those presentations inspired much less discussion than others, though.

We didn’t have enough time to do justice to the piece, but I did go over the basic intellectual and cultural context of the Reply–Counter-Reformation, Enlightenment ideology, the social role of education, and of course proto-feminism, in addition to the historical controversy of its publication and reception. The following period, however, we returned to the Reply, and particularly went over a few passages central to the text’s meaning–especially the passages where Sor Juana argues for her right, even obligation, to study the secular sciences. As I was reading one moment aloud, the moment where she describes the philosophy of the kitchen, I was astonished to find myself tearing up…. These passages also allowed us to think about her implicit critique of the Archbishop of Mexico, as well, crossdressed in letters as the upright Sor Filotea. Good stuff.
