This week, one of my more amusing reads has been “Complete and utter Zebu” by Simon Rose and Steve Caplin (to find out what Zebu is, you’ll have to buy the book). It’s a catalogue of the sometimes scary lies told by businesses, politicians and publicity gurus to part us from our money, our morals, or our votes. It’s a thoroughly enjoyable read.

It seems odd for me to pull a business lesson out of a book which spends much of its time holding a sceptical eye up to some of big business’ more dubious tactics; but towards the end of the book I found a delightful chapter devoted to quotes from some of history’s most influential businesspeople and inventors- getting things wrong. And because they’re quotes, I can repeat some of them here for you.

“The Phonograph has no commercial value” - Thomas Edison

“This ‘Telephone’ has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a practical form of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us”- Western Union Memo

“That the automobile has practically reached the limit of its development is suggested by the fact that during the past year no improvements of a radical nature have been introduced”- Scientific American, 1909

“Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?”- Harry Warner, head of Warner Brothers, 1927

“Television won’t be able to hold on to any market it captures after the first six months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night.”- Darryl F. Zanuck, head of 20th Century Fox, 1946

“There is no reason for any individual to have a computer in their home.”- Ken Olsen, founder of Digital Equipment, 1977

So – you can rightly giggle to yourself at these pontificating pronouncements from the great and the good. Edison, of course, is forgivable for many of these comments – he successfully patented a raft of inventions; and watched several more reach a mass audience with somebody else long after he had discarded them.

Several more of these comments, though (particularly Warner and 20th Century Fox) are paradigm examples of big companies sticking their heads in the sand when a new, threatening technology comes along; hoping the danger will go away.

The quote from Scientific American about cars is also by no means alone – in the 1800s, the British Society, then the world’s foremost platform for scientific discourse, almost closed its doors, claiming that “everything there to be discovered has been discovered”.

What makes these comments so interesting is that we’re all experts when we’re armed with hindsight. In the fray of business, these big players are at an inherent disadvantage. They move slowly and ponderously. It’s small, agile companies which create game-changing new business models. Some smarter large businesses see this, and create innovation labs to check out new ideas. They fund offshoots without the burden of the big corporate architecture, to accelerate new ideas to fruition.

Fashion brands even employ young style consultants who are so close to emerging trends that they can spot next year’s playground uber-trend while it’s still incubating in just one urban club.

But if you’re looking for the Next Big Thing, you can do no better than to ask yourself, all the time, “Why does it have to be this way?” By thinking differently, by challenging received wisdom, by questioning the assumed and obvious; that’s where so many innovative new ideas and their subsequent businesses can be allowed to emerge. And that thinking needs no money: just an open mind.

Dieses Jahr gibt es wirklich ein tolles Programm der größten TV-Stationen für Animationsfans. Besonders empfehlen kann ich “Ein Königreich für ein Lama”, “TMNT – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” und auch die Free-TV Premiere des Richard Linklater Films “A Scanner Darkly – Der dunkle Schirm”.

Zum kommenden Film “Alvin und die Chipmunks 2″ wurde nun ein neuer internationaler Trailer veröffentlicht, welcher vor allem den Aufhänger des Films verrät. So geht es im zweiten Teil um die Einführung der Chipettes und den damit verbundenen Rivalitäten als auch Liebeleien. Viel Spaß mit dem Trailer.

Making The (Up) Grade: Rocky

While new Blu-rays of old movies are sometimes dubious replacements for prior editions (hence the need for this column), box sets released in the high-definition format have thus far been fairly helpful, at least in terms of shelf space: many or most of them forego a lot of the frills and flourishes of their standard-definition iterations in favor of more streamlined packaging. Unfortunately, that’s also sometimes extended to their extras, thanks in no small part to the legal entanglements of transferring commentaries and bonus content from one format to another.

Both Warner Brothers and Fox have faced this challenge a couple of times thanks to their ownership/ adoption of the libraries of MGM and United Artists, which until a few years ago issued their own releases. Rocky, which is one of United Artists’ premier franchises, was recently released on Blu-ray in The Undisputed Collection, a set that contains all six of the films in the series, but it remains to be seen whether complete also means comprehensive in this particular case.

What’s Already Available:

Rocky was previously released several times on DVD both as a standalone title and in Rocky-themed box sets. 2006’s Rocky Anthology featured remastered versions of the first five films (it was released prior to Rocky Balboa) and no extra content. Meanwhile, a Special Edition of the first film was released in December of that same year and featured three commentaries, a three-part making of documentary called “In The Ring,” seven featurettes, TV spots and trailers, deleted scenes and a collectible booklet.

What’s In The New Set: The Undisputed Collection features all of the films as well as a bonus that has more than three hours of extras and special features. Additionally, all of the films are presented in high definition with 5.1 DTS-HD audio tracks, or in Rocky Balboa’s case, English PCM 5.1 uncompressed audio.

What’s The Difference In The Movie Itself: Like many Blu-ray reissues of films more recently released or updated on DVD, the films basically feature the same transfers as their standard-definition version, albeit now presented in uncompressed high definition. Much like the DVD transfer for the ‘06 edition, Rockyshows its age (and its initial price tag) with picture presentation that has a lot of grain and soft detail, but with the exception of the new film, which was transferred to HD when it was originally put on DVD, it by far looks the best of the series.

According to online information the ‘06 Anthology set boasted remastered presentation of the other films as well, but here they’re all grainy and muted, with soft colors and a focus that quite frankly should be sharper in high definition. Meanwhile, in terms of the content of the films, they’re all the same as in previous sets, with no edits or changes implemented.

What’s The Difference In Everything Else: This set unfortunately is a victim, at least in part, of the same rules that kept the bonus materials for Robocop off of its Blu-ray release. None of the films have commentaries, which means that the first film lost all three of the existing ones, and the new ones, well, they never received (and one might argue, they never deserved) one. Further, almost all of the special features on Disc Seven are the same as the ones on the ‘06 Rocky Special Edition, which begs the question why the commentaries couldn’t also carry over in addition to the featurettes and other stuff.

That said, the material is all genuinely interesting – a featurette about Steadicam inventor Garrett Brown explores a footnote in filmmaking history that is virtually unknown to anyone outside the industry – but again it would have been interesting to see something new among these existing extras, or in lieu of that a sort of one-stop set that collected everything together.

What’s The Final Grade: C. The appeal of the Rocky series is mostly predicated on personal experience – all of the films aren’t great – so if you saw certain ones at important times in your life (at least cinematically speaking), then this set is a must own. But for folks on the fence, the transfers are definitely not terrific, and the slate of extras is incomplete, especially if you’ve already spent some money on making this palooka a winner.

Die Doppelfolge der Simpsons am vergangenen Dienstag, den 17. November 2009, lief erneut sehr gut für ProSieben. So hat die Free-TV Premiere der Folge “Quatsch mit Soße” insgesamt 2,35 Millionen Zuschauer gefunden, was einem starken Marktanteil von 15% entspricht.

Die Episode um 20.45 Uhr, die nur eine Wiederholung der 19. Staffel war, schnitt sogar noch besser ab und konnte insgesamt 2,49 Millionen Leute begeistern, die der roten Sieben einen sehr guten Marktanteil von 15,5% beschert. Damit läuft die Ausstrahlung der Simpsons Doppelfolgen in der Primetime am Dienstag auch weiterhin ganz nach den Hoffnungen der Programmplaner.

20th Century Fox has released this new international trailer for the Chris Columbus directed fantasy adventure, Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

The movie is set in the 21st century but sees the gods and monsters of Greek mythology come to life, emerging from the pages of Percy Jackson’s school books. Percy then discovers that he is the demigod son of the Greek god, Poseidon, and embarks on a journey across modern-day America with his friends Annabeth, also a demigod, and Grover, a satyr, to save his mother, return Zeus’ stolen lightning bolt, and prevent a war between the gods.

The movie stars Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, Sean Bean, Pierce Brosnan, Steve Coogan, Rosario Dawson, Catherine Keener, Kevin McKidd, Joe Pantoliano, Uma Thurman and Ray Winstone, who all add their weight on the acting front. Quite the heady cast there you have to admit. Chris Columbus is good with children’s movie having directed the first two Home Alone and Harry Potter movies.

The trailer looks good, and as a fan of Greek (well really all) mythology I’ll be watching when the movie is released February 12th, 2010.

Cult sci-fi animated series ‘Futurama’ is set to return for a new series of 26 episodes. The series was originally thought up by Simpsons creator Matt Groening in the mid-1990s. He later enlisted former Simpsons writer and producer David X. Cohen (now Futurama head writer and Executive producer) to help devlop the idea. For anyone who hasn’t seen it, the premise of the series is a pizza delivery boy, Philip J Fry, who is accidentally (later revealed to be deliberately) cryogenically frozen in 1999 for 1000 years until New Year’s Eve 2999. The series revolves around his adventures adjusting to life in the 31st Century. The best character, in my opinion, is the alcoholic robot Bender. After showing for four seasons from 1999-2003 the series was cancelled and later syndicated for reruns where its fan base grew and it attracted a devoted following.  After reruns the series was revived with four straight-to-DVD films, Bender’s Big Score, The Beast with a Billion Backs, Bender’s Game and Into the Wild Green Yonder. The new series is set to begin airing around mid-2010. Producing studio 20^th Century Fox has announced that the new series will air on Comedy Central. Initially the original voice cast were said to be not reprising their roles. Protests were made at this news, including a ‘Save the Voices of Futurama’ Facebook group. It has now been confirmed that the entire cast are returning. Thanks for reading.

Die aktuelle Ausstrahlung der 20. Staffel geht diesen Dienstag um 20.15 Uhr auf ProSieben weiter. Am morgigen Dienstag, den 17. November 2009, wird die 10. Folge gezeigt, die den Titel “Quatsch mit Soße” hat. Alle Details zur Folge findet ihr in der Staffel-Vorschau V.

Homer löst eine Brandkatastrophe aus, wodurch das “Fast Food-Viertel” zerstört wird. Um Geld für den Wiederaufbau zu bekommen, beschließen die Bewohner von Springfield, eine Schuldenanleihe zu machen. Diese soll Thema beim bevorstehenden Wahlkampf werden, woraufhin Bürgermeister Quimby kurzerhand beschließt, die nächste Wahl nach vorne zu verlegen. Der Medienrummel ist vorprogrammiert, und Homer hat schon bald die Schnauze voll und ruft eine Anti-Wahlaktion ins Leben …

Zur Free-TV Premiere von “Quatsch mit Soße” ist übrigens noch zu erwähnen, dass es sich hierbei um die erste Simpsons Episode handelt, die in HDTV produziert wurde. Wundert euch also nicht, wenn die Simpsons morgen im 16:9 Format gezeigt werden.

La crisis económica también llega a la industria del cine hollywoodiense y aqueja al famoso león de la Metro

Son casi 4.000 millones de dólares los que adeudan a esta compañía, que engloba a célebres obras como ‘Lo que el viento se llevó’ o ‘James Bond’. Para mantenerse a flote, la Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) ha anunciado que se encuentra en “un proceso de examen de las diferentes estrategias posibles, entre otras, funcionar como una entidad independiente, formar asociaciones estratégicas y evaluar una eventual venta de la empresa”. Asimismo, sus acreedores han aceptado ampliar el plazo de pago de esos 4.000 millones de deuda hasta el próximo 31 de enero.

En cualquier caso, desde septiembre de 2004, MGM forma parte de una corporación liderada por Sony, que engloba al operador de cable Comcast y a varios fondos de inversión. MGM también complementa a United Artists, dirigida por el actor Tom Cruise. No obstante, ahora, entre los principales candidatos a adquirir los famosos estudios de cine destacan Time Warner, empresa dueña de la Warner Bros, o el conocido magnate de la comunicación Rupert Murdoch, quien controla al grupo News Corporation, en el que se enmarca la 20th Century Fox.

Principales afectados por la quiebra
La última secuela de ‘James Bond’, aún por rodar, y ‘El Hobbit’ son los principales títulos que van a sufrir de primera mano las consecuencias derivadas de la difícil situación económica que está afectando a MGM.

El rodaje de ‘James Bond’, cuyo título provisional es ‘Bond 23’, estaba previsto que comenzase a principios del 2010, pero parece ser que no será así por encontrarse congelados los 300 millones de euros previstos de presupuesto para poder comenzar a dar forma a la película.
‘El Hobbit’ es otro de los principales afectados por la falta de liquidez de la compañía. Producida por Peter Jackson y Guillermo del Toro este film, que tiene previsto su estreno en el verano de 2011, corre una mejor suerte que el título anterior, ya que su rodaje está en marcha. Ello se debe a que sus acreedores consideran que existen muchas posibilidades de que la película pueda ser comprada, aunque bien es cierto que aún no se conoce ningún candidato.

Was wird für die Informationen in der Zukunft verlangt? Werden Twitter-Meldungen wertvolle journalistisch aufbereitete Nachrichtenmeldungen, gegen Zahlung auf Wahrheitsgehalt geprüft (verifiziert) und “freigegeben”?

Die modernen “Wahrheitsorakel” sind heute bereits die auftraggeberabhängigen Gutachter für die Justiz und die Statistiker, Wissenschaftler sowie Thinktank-Experten für die Regierungspläne. Vielleicht werden auch soviel Lügen über z. B. Twitter verbreitet, dass man eine neue Geschäftsgrundlage für Journalisten schafft – die Bürger werden freiwillig zahlen (aber das ist Spekulation aufgrund von Erfahrungswerten zu andern perfiden Geschäftsmodellen).

Werden aktuelle Informationen jemals veralten oder anders gefragt, wird man sich “die Zeitung von gestern” nicht mehr kostenlos ansehen können? Das wertvollste sind sicher Informationsarchive und Dossiers mit ganzheitlich thematisch und auch journalistisch aufbereiteten Informationen.
