Jane (Heigl) has been a bridesmaid 27 times and never close to being the bride. She is secretly in love with her boss Geroge (Burns). When her sister Tess (Akerman) shows up and ends up on the fast track to marrying George she cannot bear to stand by her side. Kevin (Marsden) is a reporter who writes about weddings and ends up writing a story about Jane . . .

This is pretty much your typical romantic comedy which is pretty easy to read and figure out which direction it is going in. What happens next is pretty obvious, with Jane being the I don’t really believe in love . . . it will never happen to me . . . in love with a guy who does not really notice her in that way. It really does have leading rom-com actress written all over it.

The unlikely guy being “the one” in the end after a lot of trauma, arguments and denial pretty much explains the majority of this film. It also has arguments between two sisters which I think gives a slightly different edge at times.

In the end when Jane could get the man she really wanted, she realised that he was not in fact the one for her and that the perfect guy for her had indeed been the one she did not like and did not want to be with straight away. So does this mean that you cannot always tell right away if you could actually be with someone? So the whole love at first sight thing, does not exist? But eventually getting to kiss the “man of her dreams” and realising that she felt nothing, this brings up another age-old question do you have to feel something in a kiss? Does it really help you know this person could be the one? I think feeling something in a kiss makes such a difference.

The last lines leading up to her eventual wedding mention something about all that matters is the person standing waiting for you at the end of the aisle. Which is definitely a thinking point, in theory nothing else about your big day should really matter as much as loving and wanting to be with the person waiting for you at the end of the aisle, right? Surely it has to be the most important thing, and if it is not the most important thing then should you really be marrying that person?

I really think I picked the wrong time to kinda watch this and attempt a review as I have totally tried to take more out from the film than was ever probably intended. But I guess everything depends on your frame of mind when watching a film, and if you over think it all . . .

Everyone loves Amy Adams don’t they. She was great in Drop Dead Gorgeous and funny in Enchante

Everyone loves Amy Adams don’t they. She was great in Drop Dead Gorgeous and funny in Enchanted. Matthew Goode has been in loads of British TV dramas and was Ozymandias in Watchmen.

Now they are in a new movie, which promises to break out from all the romantic movie cliches you usually get in a film like this.

When their four-year anniversary passes without a marriage proposal, Anna (Adams) decides to take matters into her own hands. Investing in an Irish tradition that allows women to propose to men on February 29th, Anna decides to follow her boyfriend Jeremy (Adam Scott) to Dublin and get down on one knee herself.

But airplanes, weather and fate leave Anna stranded on the other side of Ireland, and she must enlist the help of handsome and surly Declan (Matthew Goode) to get her across the country. As Anna and Declan bicker across the Emerald Isle, they discover that the road to love can take you to very unexpected places.

My mistake. It does have all those romantic movie cliches you have come to expect from these kind of movies. Anna meets surly Declan. They argue, get on each others nerves, a bit of slapstick, they’ll probably get all their clothes wet or something and have to spend the night together in an uncomfortable position (like the back of a volkswagon!) They’ll argue some more, he won’t tell her something important, they get closer and fall for each other, then that important thing he didn’t say crops up and she runs away or tells him to get stuffed. She meets her intended but at the last minute Declan will turn up on the back of a tractor or something and reference something from earlier in the movie. The end.

Oh and there will be some crazy stereotypical Irish folk, Guinness, and a scene involving a cow or another animal with hilarious consequences.

I wrote that last two paragraphs without watching the trailer. Then I watched the trailer…sigh!

Off the top of my head I’m getting 27 Dresses, The Proposal, PS I Love You, The Ugly Truth, Pretty Woman, Notting Hill, How to Lose A Guy in 10 Days, Along Came Polly, The Holiday, Wedding Planner, Made of Honour, My Best Friend’s Wedding, The Wedding Date and so on and so forth….note to self: Stop watching so many romantic comedies. Did I miss any?

(Originally posted September 19th)

Ah! I absolutely ADORE it! Simply put, amazing! If only Jane had realized she loved Kevin sooner…*SIGH* But, those are the breaks. I will absolutely have to acquire the DVD to this one…along with around twenty to thirty other movies I have said the same about…Lol. One of my favorite quotes from the movie:

“Oh my God. I feel like I just found out my favorite love song was written about a sandwich.”

Seriously, that would suck.

Just one of my many, many favorite scenes in the movie is just after Jane sees Tess with George. Jane walks out of the bar and into another room (which is hosting a 50th anniversary party) where she repeatedly smacks the wall with her purse and says, “Mother FUCKERRRRRR!” before she finds out that there are people currently occupying that room… Ahaha. Great. Oh! Another good scene is when Jane and Kevin take the scanning guns and add the ugliest items in the store to Tess’s registry. But! One of the absolute winners has to be when Kevin and Jane are drunk and singing in the bar. Fabulously, astonishingly, hilariously great.

If you haven’t noticed by now, my goal in writing this blog entry was to use far too many adjectives. Impossibly so, I could use even more if I planned on being annoying—which is not the case tonight. Just got done watching the movie and I should (technically) go to bed. School tomorrow (again, technically…Still not feeling too well—maybe I should worry about “bed times” later on…like Sunday night.)

If you haven’t seen this movie…well, hurry up and get it from the library or something! If you have seen it, what’s your favorite part? Your favorite quote? Favorite character? I’m curious!!! Email it to me at mao.ottero@gmail.com or go to the contact page on my website. Thanks

Anyways, a great movie. Off to read Eclipse again (for what, the fourteenth, fifteenth time this year?). G’night readers of bloggage!

**NOTE: I blame this movie for my addiction to the song Bennie and the Jets. Listen below!**

This dictionary.reference.com’s definition of remorse. It’s here because we’ve all felt remorse (unless you’re a complete sociopath), whether it’s for something small like something you’ve said or for a completely different cuttle of fish all together.

For me, right now I’m having that moment from your classic chic flick. You know the moment when the nice and pretty lead girl discovers that shes been so mean and horrible and your left with a camera shot of her blank face as you see her trying to understand what shes done wrong. Take for instance Jane (Katherine Heigl) in 27 dresses after she had just shown a rather embarrassing slide show of her slutty sister at her engagement party and Jane’s best friend had just asked her did it make her feel better it didn’t ( OMG spoilers what ever are we going to do!?)

Catherine Heigl

Well, I didn’t quite show an embarrassing slide show I just kinda lost it, big time. After my so-called friends ditched me at break and didn’t even offer an explanation or a “sorry about”. Petty, I know but it was the second time said unnameable cow has done that to me. First in town when after we tried to phone her and she pretended not to know us and then just 5 minutes later she calls me, trying to say it was me who ran off! And she then thought it was a good idea to bombard an angry me with pathetic “Whats wrong with you?” for the next week. I think I was still angry about that. So me being me I processed to make her day a living hell by being the most unbearable person I could possibly be. Trust me I broke her down. God that felt good.

Now it’s the Monday after and remorse has decided to pop in and say hi. It sucks! Now all I want to do is go home and sulk while listening to snow patrol! Should I try to make peace with the un named cow or should I just say “go to hell and don’t come back” ? My poor friends caught in the cross fire just want a white flag, but I can’t stand her, she doesn’t seen to understand the real world outside of films and her icon-making. The girl doesn’t even know how to caught a bus for crying out loud! I don’t want to lose my friends because of her and my two friend’s hero worship of her (it’s beyond.) I’m going to have to play her at her own game (with out the hero worship, thats just plain annoying.) And there’s no way in hell I’m going to lose!

A friend and I went to see Couples Retreat over the weekend. This movie, about four couples who go on an all-inclusive vacation in an attempt to help one of the couples (Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell) save their marriage, end up looking into the reality of each of their marriages, hilarity ensues. Vince Vaughn always seems to play the same type of funny guy, that quick talking, slightly snarky, everyman, which obviously works for him. If you normally find Vince funny–its more of the same here. He pretty much leads the pack with Jason Bateman, Jon Favreau, Malin Akerman (27 Dresses), Kristin Davis, & and Kristen Bell all joining in the fun.

Basically, once the couples get to their fantastic island resort, they expect to party, with the exception of uptight perfectionists, Cynthia and Jason (Bell and Bateman), who are going to undergo the resorts couples training. However the group finds out they all must partake in the therapy or they all must leave. It is sorta like The Hangover for married people, but less funny. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed this movie, it was funny and cute, it didn’t drag on too long, and I didn’t have to think too hard while at the theater. All reasons to enjoy something. Go and see it, just don’t expect it to be life changing or anything!

Luckily for me, my dresses aren’t that big or pouffy. I may have some wiggle trouble with the Gatsby, seeing that it’s really close-fitting down to my hips and then fairly narrow thereafter, but I don’t forsee a huge problem.

However, this problem has gotten quite a few brides panicking, especially the anal/urethral-retentive among us. Especially after that scene in ‘27 Dresses’ with Katherine Heigl crammed into a bathroom stall, having to hold up voluminous skirts for the bride to answer nature’s call.

So I found a hilarious PSA on weddingbee by 2dBride, an attorney who’s in a two-bride wedding! (As in ‘I now pronounce you wife and wife’). I reckon she must know what she’s talking about then, since two heads are better than one especially when it comes to managing wedding gowns.

Credits to her. But for easy reading, here’s her PSA on ‘Peeing in your wedding dress’:

On arrival at your venue

Open the door of the ladies’ room and look in. If the floor is not clean, call the venue staff and ask to have it cleaned.

If the floor is clean, walk into the ladies’ room and open the door of the handicapped stall. If the floor of the handicapped stall is not clean, call the venue staff and ask to have it cleaned.

This ensures that you will not later get the train/back of the dress dirty just by having it touch the floor.

When you need to go

Walk into the handicapped stall. Remove (don’t just pull down) your underpants.

Facing the toilet, pull up the front of your dress to your waist.

Walk straight forward, so you are straddling the toilet, and sit down that way. The train/back of your dress will now be away from the toilet, so you won’t get them wet or dirty.

Lean forward before peeing. That way, even if you drop the front of the dress onto the seat, you will not pee in its direction.

Well I’m not sure I like the idea of straddling the toilet but I have the added comfort of having a bridal suite at the hotel where we’ll be having our reception. That way I can perform the necessary in relative peace and comfort.

Worst case scenario, my girls (minus the bridesman) can always pull a Katherine Heigl!

The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

27 sukienek (27 dresses)

Kiedy Harry poznał Sally (When Harry met Sally)

Stąd do wieczności (From here to eternity)

Dlatego “Stąd do wieczności” pozostawiało wiele do życzenia.

Wojna domowa (Easy virtue)

Z początku śmiesznie i pogodnie, wraz z rozwojem akcji wychodzą na jaw coraz to nowe, mroczne, smutne i trudne sekrety każdego z bohaterów.

Ach.

Casablanca

No i wreszcie – wisienka na czubku tortu.

It’s been a looooong time since we’ve visited the land of celebrity-Twitter. We sure had some good laughs in the past though, didn’t we? What, with all the Amy Winehouse-ness hilarity, the Uncle Joe Biden craziness and good ol’ Brad “I swear I’m not really a monkey” Pitt, too.

Well, this time The Kids are dropping in on the sports world, courtesy of the NBA.

Have you ever wondered what’s on Lebron James’ mind (answer: nothing)? or Kobe Bryant’s (answer: whitechicksinahotelwhitechickshoteli’minlovewithshaqwhitechicksinahotelwhitechicksnahoteli)?

Too bad. In the land of Twitter, only one NBA star reigns supreme, and that man is:

Robinson has ball-handling skills, but struggles handling the law

Nate Robinson!

Don’t know who he is? Nate Robinson, at 5-foot-7, is originally one of the Doozers from Fraggle Rock. One day he picked up a basketball, caught the eye of David “Emperor Palpatine” Stern and was given a Knicks jersey. He’s spent his time on the New York Knicks being cheered in the same way crowds cheer when they bring blind or sick kids out at 1/2 time to attempt 1/2 court shots and fire-eating.

Anyway, most recently, Nate Robinson was arrested in the NYC-area for suspended license, which is code for “DUITBCYR&BYWGA” (“driving under the influence that because you’re rich and black you won’t get arrested”).

What happened next though, is something that’s becoming a celebrity-phenomenon in the Twitter world. It started with Lindsay Lohan’s morning Tweet of “8:45am snorting coke off of mom’s breast as i type–i love brkfst!” and most recently Brad Pitt’s mid-sex Tweet of “7:45pm Angie just asked Maddox to put down the camera and grab daddy’s butt plugs”.

Celebs are now Tweeting at the most inappropriate times. And so, in that tradition, Nate Robinson Tweeted during his actual arrest.

And The Kids has the transcript.

The Kids Don’t Get It Presents: The NBA: I love this ga–DON’T TASE ME BRO!

Step Up (2006)
★★★ / ★★★★

There’s something about dance movies that initially repel me from watching them, but when I actually give them a chance I can’t help but get engaged. “Step Up,” directed by Anne Fletcher (“27 Dresses,” “The Proposal”), tells the story of Tyler Gage (Channing Tatum) who gets community service for vandalizing the props of a school for the arts (along with two of his friends–Damaine Radcliff and De’Shawn Washington). Initially assigned to mop the floors, take out the garbage and fix knickknacks, he decides to help out a girl (Jenna Dewan) named Nora for her Senior project after her partner gets a sprained ankle. What initially starts out to be a typical dance movie becomes a story about lower class people striving to be something so much more. I noticed it change gears somewhere in the middle and I liked it that much more. I like the fact that instead of the students from the school making fun of others outside of their bubble, it’s the people from the outside who have prejudice toward the students. Typically, it’s shown as the other way around so I found that to be refreshing. I thought it was also a good move by the movie to recognize that most of the students in the art school are not rich, like most college students, in fact, they’re on financial aid or scholarships and they have to work their butt off to earn their place. I couldn’t be any more wrong when I thought that this was just going to be another one of those movies that glorify dancing and being “gangster” and nothing else. It’s actually pretty thoughtful and it presented characters going through pivotal moments in their lives. I also enjoyed watching the supporting characters such as Mario as an aspiring musician/DJ, Drew Sidora as Dewan’s energetic friend and Rachel Griffiths as the art school’s director. Overall, I liked “Step Up” because it surpassed my expectations and it made me want to, strangely enough, dance.

27 dresses is on right now. it seems our family is addicted to that movie. it’s at the climax at this moment. she’s mad at Kevin. she’s mad at Tess. and she still wants George more than ever. actually, she’s YELLING at Kevin right this second. i love how he makes the worst mistake possible. and then he realizes he loves her. and then he makes a pathetic attempt to show his devotion by giving her a Blackberry or something. i like it. he’s so childish. the way he tries to fix his mistakes by giving the girl of his dreams a phone. too cute.

someday, i’ll have to make a page with all our dresses in it or something along those lines. that would be lovely. but then i would probably feel bad because i have so many dresses….*blush*.

(she never say No. Jane never says No. i love that. and you know, how ironic that in the end she does learn to say Yes. to Kevin.)

today was day 4 of sports camp. my group was darling. i was beyond happy. every one of them could hit the volleyball perfectly. i hope tomorrow turns out as smashing.

{i wore a little white blouse and a tan skirt today}. not exactly a dress. but i can wear a dress tomorrow. i will wear a dress tomorrow.

i ♥ Kevin Doyle and & Jane from 27 dresses.

i want a life like that one. a life like one in a movie like that. and you know, my life is already pretty darn priceless. not to mention cute.

love.

So..I’m not gonna lie. I’m a good time at weddings. I believe people have invited me to

So..I’m not gonna lie. I’m a good time at weddings. I believe people have invited me to their weddings based upon this very fact. “Forget the band! Invite Flynn.” Even my own mother told me that she wasn’t going to any other weddings that I’m in because she thinks I “act like a jackass”. What? That’s just how I dance, Mom.

The wedding that I attended this past weekend, believe it or not, did not end with me necessarily falling into the coatcheck. But you can bet your sweet cheeks that I had a good laugh when someone else did. So when I say I’m a good time at weddings, I think its mostly because of the company I keep. I may be an instigator, and get people riled up to the point that they down more cocktails than a bachelor party at a strip joint, but there is not much work I have to do when it comes to prompting anyone.

Wedding receptions typically balance on the brink between being a celebration of sacred ceremony to an outlandish, take-your-shoes-off side-ring circus. People that normally haven’t drank since they did a keg stand sophomore year in college, tend to down a few more than they are used to at wedding receptions. And that’s all thanks to an open bar. Have you seen how wedding guests flock to the open bar at the beginning of a reception? It’s like ringing the dinner bell at fat camp. Relatives literally come out of the woodwork to hear the happy couple say I do in a hot, cramped church only so they can down about ten gin and tonics two hours later while the DJ spins “You Shook Me All Night Long”. Nothing like a little AC/DC to make Grandma shake her moneymaker on the dance floor.

When it comes to being a bridesmaid, I have been in 11 weddings (I would have been in 12, but I couldn’t be in one wedding because I was already asked to be in another one that same day)…but that’s not counting the number of weddings I have actually attended. I believe that number is hovering around, oh, I don’t know, about a 100. I practically can recite that reading from the Corinthians. When the movie with Katherine Heigl came out , “27 Dresses”, I got a lot of comments. “You’re like that movie!” I’m like, yeah, but you don’t see me dating James Mardsen in the end, do you?

Ah…but I’ve seen it all my friends: a wedding cake fall over and off the table once the bride and groom cut into it, a dog in a tux, a passed out wedding guest get wheeled into the hotel lobby on a luggage rack, wedding attendants ride around in a stolen golf cart, a groomsman fall from his chair off the head table platform and onto the floor during the best man’s speech, a ceremony held in an armory (a last minute location based on an impending hurricane forecast), tears in the bathroom, tears on the dance floor, shirts off and vests kept on, a shouting match between the bagpipe player and a wedding guest, dresses “malfunction”, a fight break out in the parking lot only to have someone show up with a black eye at breakfast the next day, bridesmaids dancing on window ledges of the reception hall, a woman with a baseball glove at the bouquet toss, a bride getting wheeled out at the end of the night in a wheelchair (not because she had too much, but because her knee gave out), the electricity go out at the host hotel the night before the wedding, drunk priests, a wedding guest singing off-key the “other” lyrics to “Wild Thing” on stage while the band took a break, conga lines, dollar dances, little boys catching the garter…you name it, I’ve pretty much seen it.

It’s been a fun process…and quite a range of dresses, as one could imagine. One year, I remember being in three weddings. When I showed up at a bridal salon to get fitted for a dress for one of them, I couldn’t remember whose wedding it was for and what dress I was supposed to try on. I said to the salesclerk, “You know, check this bride’s name out. I think it’s under her…?” However, I would do it all over again. You see, although we may get caught up in the details of the wedding – the reception hall, the flowers, the cake, the guest lists, the dresses, the tux fittings, the themed showers, the group gifts, the rehearsals, (I actually had a priest reprimand me at a rehearsal because I had been cracking jokes when the couple was “practicing” their vows), the dinners, the family arguments, the buffet choices, the honeymoon, the hotel reservations, the registry – there is actually, beneath all of that, a couple that have vowed to, for richer for poorer, till death do them part, stick it out with each other. And to me, that’s worth standing up for. These couples have been my best friends, my family, childhood friends, college friends, cousins, sister, brothers…I have truly been honored to be asked to bear witness to a ceremony (that admist all the comedy, free drinks and a great DJ) was the one thing that brought all these clowns together in the first place. Just because of this one couple, a couple that like each other so much that they want to spend the rest of their lives together. And they want to throw a party in order to shout it out to the world. Pretty cool, huh?

But, when the party is done, the guests have gone home, the gifts have been opened and the honeymoon is over, there is just the two of them. And we can’t forget, that as guests, as family and as friends, in our heart of hearts, we vowed to support them in their lives together. No one said it would be easy. And it certainly wouldn’t always be a party. But at times, when you look back and remember that a “look” or “glance” that started it all, you remember. And that is worth its weight in a good party…love, itself, is an “open bar”. You want to get as much as you can in the beginning, thinking it may be too good to be true…and that’s when you start to feel its side effects, you get a little nauseous, and sometimes you need someone on either side of you to hold you up when you stumble. But you always know at the end of the day – when that love is real – you know it was because it was a good time.

I haven’t been writing much. Yes. It’s been months since I’ve written anything sub

I haven’t been writing much. Yes. It’s been months since I’ve written anything substantial. So excuse these next few paragraphs as I rid myself of my own immaturity.

My inactivity in the realm of writing? I blame television.

Actually, it’s not so much television. It’s OnDemand movies, available in completely worthless cable packages. My eyes have been gently raped by an incredibly questionable selection of movies in the past month:

Hot Rod, The Condemned, She’s All That, Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Eagle Eye.

I’ve seen Made of Honor five times1.

My roommate–the dastardly one who holds the cable contract–claims I need better self control. Oh, okay. Sure. Why don’t you take a recovering coke addict, drop ten kilos of coke2 in the middle of his living room, and tell him, “Hey man, self control.”

Yes, I just compared television to coke. Do not call me unreasonable. I KNOW what is unreasonable, and what is unreasonable, is any sane man watching Made of Honor five times.

Whew3.
—
1) Can you blame me? OMGPatrickDempsey. Excited gasp!
2) Contrary to what you may believe, I have no idea how much 10 kilos of coke actually is. All I know is it sounds like you’d get fucked up.
3) Okay. I think I can stay television-sober for a few months until they start playing 27 Dresses every hour again.

There is a scene in 27 Dresses, where the cute guy and the cute girl are at a bar, and the cute guy

There is a scene in 27 Dresses, where the cute guy and the cute girl are at a bar, and the cute guy says to the cute girl “You don’t know how to say ‘No’”, she of course says she does, and he argues she doesn’t and then tests her something like this:

Cute Guy: “Give me 50 bucks”

Cute Girl: “No”

Cute Guy: “Please give me 50 bucks”

Cute Girl: “No”

Cute Guy: “Seriously, I really need it and I’ll get it back to you”

Cute Girl: “Er, NO”

Cute Guy: “Very good, cute girl, can I have your drink?”

Cute Girl: “Sure”

AHA! I relate to this, except that I would have given him the 50 bucks, pretty much the second he said ‘Please’.. That is, if I had $50 to give, which I wouldn’t, so I would give up $5 because I don’t know how to say “NO”!

With the tsunami of wisdom that seems to be flooding me in this my 40th year, I have discovered a few things about myself, one of which is my complete inability to say ‘No’. Not so odd really, I am a woman after all, but I really, REALLY don’t know how to extricate myself from things I don’t want to do and as a result, I often feel really cross and conflicted because I’m caught in a situation I don’t want to be in…and it’s my own fault.

So, this is the year I’ve decided I’m going to learn to do it. And I have many friends who agree that not only is there a genetic disposition in women that leans toward ‘not-saying-no’ but that this is something I’ve sorely needed to figure out. I’m wondering if 39 is a bit too late to learn this though – the whole ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’ and, yes, in this situation, I am the dog – I am the dog (name that movie).

However, something else that I’ve recently discovered in the midst of my aforementioned tsunami…not everyone wants you to say ‘No’. In fact, NOone wants you to say ‘No’…can you believe that? Hmm, what a surprising problem.

Being able to say ‘No’ is one of those things that everybody talks about (everybody who is female and over 34 anyhow), but people don’t actually want you to do it…at least not to THEM.

I’ve practised on the kids to the point where they moan the MINUTE I step up on my soapbox and start pointing my finger, (ungrateful little…) but saying it to people I am not married to or gave birth to is HARD. Mostly, because they try to convince me to change my mind. This tells me that a) they believe I am a pushover and 2) that I am a pushover.

When trying new tactics to change negative behaviour in children, it is not unusual for the child to try increasingly rotten behaviour to push against the new rules in order to see if the parent will give in, kind of like checking the fence to find any weaknesses (name THAT movie)…guess what? That’s right, tsunami time, grown-ups do it too and they’re sneaky! In the last month, I have managed to “No” myself out of a duty visit, a job I didn’t want and an ‘opportunity’ to take free tickets to a show I didn’t want to see, in return for a favor I didn’t want to offer. Yes, it kept me up at night, but I’m working on it. It’s the guilt.

In the meantime, if you hear someone loudly, firmly and unnecessarily saying “NO, I DON’T want fries with that!” or “NO, I don’t want to upsize my meal!” or “NO I do NOT want to buy a $6o pen, or a $40 tea towel to support the ‘Save The Poor Foxes Fund!” know that I am getting there and while they may be small, weird steps for mankind, they are HUGE empowering and guilt-free steps for me.

As I’ve been sitting in my room this gorgeous Sunday afternoon, finally getting in a good day of relaxation, I was flipping through various websites (is flipping the right term? I just don’t like to say “surfing”; it sounds so dorky) including the New York Times. Knowing what’s going in the world is a secret to success in my book. How can you plan to conquer the world when you don’t even know what the issues are?

I read almost all of the sections of the New York Times, except for the Science section and I spend a lot more time in the Styles, Home and Garden and Dining than anywhere else. But I must confess the most mortifying secret: the Wedding section with its feature story printed on Sunday is my favorite part of the paper. I feel like Katherine Heigl’s character in 27 Dresses though, thankfully, I don’t collect the stories or recite them from memory.

What draws me every Sunday to the stories is how incredibly sweet and amazing they are. Stories of high school sweethearts reconnecting in their 30s to discover they were still in love, two addicts overcoming the odds and falling for one another, passengers on a plane from opposite coasts discover love over a weekend, they are all stories of incredible love that it’s hard to believe exists sometimes. I may present a hard exterior of a girl happier in non-committal relationships, fully able to relish my freedom, but deep down I am very much a romantic at heart. It touches me to think that despite everything that happens in the world, these men and women could find the one person to share their dreams and their happiness. It’s scary to think it might be luck that brings you together with the right one for you but it also gives me hope that it can happen. It might even happen for me when the time is right just like Heigl says in the movie, “Someday will be my day.”

Groff" width="300" height="201" />
by J. Groff

Summertime is made for celebrations and family gatherings but there is just something special about a July wedding.

There have been 3 wedding celebrations in the past 3 days! MashaAllah I LOVE WEDDINGS!!! I can not express the beauty and joy of witnessing a bride celebrate one of the most special days of her life. It’s a heartwarming experience and it always brings back lovely memories and joy of every wedding I have attended.

My love affair with weddings officially began at age 6. My mom’s best friend was getting married and I wore a pink miniature cinderella wedding dress. It had little pink roses on the sash around the waist and down the front. Sewn into the hem were small bells that softly tinkled as I swished and danced around and around. If you ask me what my auntie was wearing that day I honestly could not tell you because on that day, in my mind, I was the bride.

Since then I have been swept off my feet by every love story-romantic-wedding movie there has been. Off the top of my head some of my favorites were: 7 Brides for 7 Brothers, The Sound of Music (nice wedding scene at the end), The Best Man, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, My Best Friend’s Wedding, and my favorite to date -27 Dresses (who in their right mind could resist being in 27 weddings!!! ooooohhhh just the thought gives me goosebumps!!)

Family, friends and neighbors all come together to celebrate and welcome the new couple. The little girl in the princess dress who dreamed of being bride has finally had her moment to shine and become the Queen Bride. Beautiful.

May Allah bless and protect the newly formed couples! Don’t you just love weddings?

Committed to a lifetime of loving weddings

we went to the yearly library book-sale today. i got some smashing new little novels. poetry. irish jig music. old stories. all the rest of that jazz…

i found an adorable little book called “Love Is.” and i loved it. and then i looked inside the cover. and i loved it even more. ’cause it said this:

♥

‘Love is…

Madge,

during the day and at night,

awake and asleep,

now and always.

Dan-1969′

♥

i found that completely sweet. i hope Dan+Madge love(d) eachother forever. f.o.r.e.v.e.r. how darling. to write, ‘Love is Madge…’ he must have been awfully sweet. awfully sweet indeed.

{i wore a little pink floral dress today.}

this morning i went for a run. then i donned on an apron and baked a loaf of bread. and then i spent some time making little cookies with Miss Tandy. while hopping back and forth trying to watch my favourite scene in a movie—boy and girl sitting in a tree together. little lights. white dress. fear. laughter—-so hard to try and glimpse all that while taking cookies out and putting them in the oven. not to mention cutting them out into bears and gingerbread men…

tomorrow i get to see my Lala. i cannot wait. it will be wonderful. PIÑATAS. fireworks. tea. books. love. smiles. joy. ♥.

i ♥ my Lala.

there’s a girl on the t.v. trying on 27 dresses. such a cute movie. the little parts where they say pretty things to one another are the ones i love. and the part when he pencils himself into her day-planner every month.week.day. it’s cute. or when they run around the store registering the bride for the ugliest stuff. that was cute. and when they both love the exact same part of the wedding…turning to see the groom just as the bride walks in. that was the cutest. sometimes i wish i had 27 dresses. maybe i do…

happyness {with a y.}

Thanks to Korean Air Lines, I was able to catch up on a bunch of movies during the 13+ hour flights

Thanks to Korean Air Lines, I was able to catch up on a bunch of movies during the 13+ hour flights to Korea and back. So here are some thoughts on them!

27 Dresses. Okay, let’s be honest, I wasn’t expecting too much from this movie…I just love Katherine Heigl! The entire movie was basically laid out before you even pressed play if you saw the trailer. Nothing really interesting went on in the movie, and it was very cliche. Recommended only if you want to watch an okay chick flick without much substance.

Enchanted. I wasn’t expecting too much from this movie either, especially since I heard mixed reviews about it. And…I hated it. I wanted to stop it half way, but I also wanted to give it a fair chance. And I still hated it. I thought the plot was ridiculous, and for some reason I did not like the mixed live actors and animation together…it didn’t work in this movie. And I wanted to punch the main girl. In my opinion, Disney failed, even with McDreamy. Not recommended.

Bella. After watching two pretty crappy movies, I was glad that I finally watched a really really good one. The acting was great, the story was heartwarming, moving, and powerful. Very well done in all aspects. It made me laugh, think and cry! It really is a “must-see.” Definitely highly(!) recommended!

Annapolis. So Jeff and I watched this when stuck in a hotel without internet. And as lovers of “really good bad movies,” we decided to watch it. I think we missed the first few minutes, but the story plot still played out really nicely. It was highly entertaining and definitely made you root for the protagonists. Plus, the cast was made up of a lot of Fast and the Furious alums! Recommended if in a mood for a quality good bad movie!

Definitely, Maybe. Finally, a quality chick flick. Ryan Reynolds and Abigail Breslin made a cute father and daughter duo and there was a good amount of insight into each of the characters. It was definitely an enjoyable romantic comedy, but can you really expect less from the makers of Love Actually? Recommended for a quality chick flick…probably a good date movie.

The Bucket List. I had heard some pretty decent things about this movie, and I wouldn’t say that it fell short…nor did it exceed my expectations. I don’t really have much to say about. It was just a pretty good movie, nothing spectacular. Recommended for a decent feel-good movie.

Vantage Point. This is a movie I was looking to catch on DVD eventually (it didn’t look good enough to watch in theaters), so I was glad I got to catch it for free. And let me tell you, it was highly entertaining and pretty intense. Although it got kind of frustrating to keep going back to the same point in the movie, it was a really interesting way to shoot and present it. And all the pieces came together really nicely to wrap things up. Recommended for a decent action flick.

Penelope. I actually never wanted to see this, but I figured I would keep going on my movie-watching streak on the way back to New York (I eventually watched 6 movies back to back). And to my surprise, it wasn’t bad, actually. It was quite fun to see Reese Witherspoon play a funky sidekick to Christina Ricci also. The plot didn’t get old, but a bit cliche at the end, but remained decent. Recommended for a new take on an old tale.

Horton Hears a Who. Not a bad take on a Dr. Seuss book. The animation was pretty good, as well as the story plot. My favorite has to be the emo son of the Mayor of Whoville. Jim Carrey also scares the crap out of me, so I’m glad everything was just voice, haha. Recommended for Dr. Seuss lovers.

So there are some brief thoughts on the movies I saw. Check some of the better ones out when you can!
