When I had just gotten out of school, I had the good luck (thx Mark Owens) to land a spot in Res mag

When I had just gotten out of school, I had the good luck (thx Mark Owens) to land a spot in Res magazine’s (RIP) Artists to Watch 2004 and as a consequence was invited to contribute some work to a show in NY and later in LA. I was fairly bereft of graphic work at this point and set out to create at least two pieces for the show. My preoccupations at the time were Leisure and Big Ideas – Leisure coding for the simple joys of wasting time, sitting in lawn chairs, playing games, reading – the things that student life had made evasive. Big Ideas meant the amorphous floating concepts that I employed or enjoyed, or that I enjoyed simply as word combinations. The results were these two guys:

“The Garden of Earthly Leisure” was a play on words, until I realized that I had misremembered the title of Hieronymus Bosch’s famed “Garden of Earthly Delights”. In my memory it was “Earthly Pleasures” making the pun complete. However, I honored my error and let it be, wonk intact.

The “Tree of Knowledge” is a collection of the concepts that were swirling around my head at the time, seemingly growing out of the infamous tree, as if these were the things that mankind is eternally condemned for discovering. This was also a redrawing of an illustration that I had started during college (and superimposed over a scan of a old book cover). I liked my original type style but didn’t have the chops to pull it off as cleanly and quickly as I would need to have the poster finished on time.

At the LA showing, my pieces were spotted by a representative of 2K By Gingham who offered to turn these into shirt graphics, along with some others. Thus began my interest in exploring illustrative/experimental typography, as well as a venue to display the results (and make a lil cash).

The two posters were later shown in Mark Owens’ Free Library exhibition at the Riviera Gallery, and space 1026 in Philly. Mark and Matt Owens’ helping hand(s) were critical in my early days of graphic work.

Later that year I was pleasantly surprised to receive my first shirt samples from 2K, featuring the two designs above, and a less auspicious design that I essentially made for my brother, a philosopher. That’s why it’s a really bad philosophy joke.

Two weekends ago, I took part in the 48 hour film project. It was a hellish and great experience sim

Two weekends ago, I took part in the 48 hour film project. It was a hellish and great experience simultaneously.. it’s something that’s really valuable to go through, I think. I worked with an absolutely great crew, everyone was so devoted and ready to sacrifice their time, sleep, and mental health for the sake of our final product. Our film was directed by Stevie Day, produced by Emma Haarburger, DoPed by me, sound mixed by Shu Shu Zheng, 1st ADed by Dawn Lo, Assistant produced by Stacey Kwijas, Boomed by Laura James, Technically assisted by Lachlan Stewart, Continuityed by Malcolm Yeo.. the list goes on, I don’t have access to the credits list right now, but everyone was awesome.

Making a film in 48 hours is radically different to making one over the course of a semester. You cannot plan the film in advance.. not in a great degree of detail, anyway. You’ve got to be flexible and inventive on the spot, prepared for anything. There was no shotlist for this shoot, let alone a floorplan, and only a loose schedule of when we needed to shift locations. Hence it was daunting at first. I walked into our first location, a massive church that I’d never seen before.. and I have no idea where we should start. Do we light the entire church? Do we have enough power to light the whole church? Do we just set up for one specific frame and reset everything later? The clock is constantly ticking and it took me a little while to decide on what we needed to set up, equipment-wise.
We blasted a 2K fresnel from the entrance of the church, throwing a strong backlight on Andy (the father) and casting stark shadows over the walls (adjusting the intensity as needed with strong ND gels). We used the kino gelled with 1/2 CTO to act as a fill. On Johnny (our voodoo pimp), I placed a dedo behind him on each side, and crossed the beams in an ‘X’ shape for strong contrast and facial modelling. The ‘X’ system was a bit of a pain however, as whenever Johnny needed to move forwards, we needed to cheat the dedos forward as well and try to recreate the same angles and shadows on Johnny’s face.
Throughout the film, we ran the DSR450 white balanced at 5600K despite using millions of tungsten light sources.. Stevie and I liked the warmth it provided.. (very little was done to our footage in post-production. We blackened the blacks and slightly boosted the highlights.. colour-wise, 99% of our footage is exactly as we shot it, and I’m happy with the way it came out, considering.)

What did we mess up? Continuity between shots was the biggest thing, cinematography-wise I think. Each shot looked fine in itself, but we discovered numerous problems when we got into the edit and tried to combine them all together. One sequence in particular really pissed me off because we’d covered it as a 2-shot and twice more as a CU of each character.. yet in edit we found that our 2-shot was extremely different to our tighter shots. Dani’s hair was completely different in the closeup, and I’d adjusted the lighting angle in Andy’s closeup to get rid of a shadow.. bad move. Our wider 2-shot was thus unusable, the cut was jarring, so we had to use only tight shots. Hence there’s no sense of space between the two characters.. they could be 500m away from each other and we wouldn’t have a clue. It’s quite weird to watch without a master shot of some kind. Even worse, the framing of each closeup didn’t match. Andy’s CU was much tighter than Dani’s Cu, so it seems like Andy has a massive head for no reason. Sucks. It’s something I hadn’t considered before, not properly anyway.
On a more general note, that may have been the problem with our coverage in general. Not enough wides. Now.. I’m not a fan of wides. They can be messy, cluttered, far too colourful, everything’s in focus and there’s no room for a boom operator to get any good sound. But otherwise you’re stuck with ambiguous floating heads.. yes the shallow DOF is awesome, but there’s no sense of place and it looks so contrived and cut together. It didn’t help that the stripclub we were shooting in was covered in mirrors.. every single wall was a mirror, which severely limited our framing possibilities. Shots generally needed to be tight to blur out equipment and crew members you’d otherwise see in the background. Similarly in the church, wides were difficult because we were using dedos and a small kino on Johnny. These are small lights that need to be in close, and going too wide results in seeing them. I guess we could’ve pulled out redheads instead, but I don’t think it would be the same effect. Cheating the lights backwards would result in a softening of shadows, making everything seem flat.. not worth it.

So yes. Continuity, coverage and framing were the main problems on this shoot, but that’s to be expected given the time constraints. Something had to go wrong, obviously. And overall, I’m extremely happy with how the film turned out. Thanks to everyone involved, it was brilliant to work with you all. I’m going to shut up now and stick in some pictures.

The girls continued to walk, now with shadows in the form of two male counterparts. Kourt and Lauren

The girls continued to walk, now with shadows in the form of two male counterparts. Kourt and Lauren eyed one another, partaking in the general conversation that always took place between girls on girls night when guys decided to intrude. It was eye quick conversation, intermingled with sidelong glances of the boys at hand, judging their looks, their attitude, demeanor, clothes – an entire talk between two females simple put on a look, a nod, then – the deemed response.

“Oh, like totally. We may look thin but we, like, still eat!” Lor replied, already having received the silent okay from Kourtney.

“Yup, time for food.” Kourt added while running her fingers through her hair, brushing it back behind her ear, giving it a ruffled look, and a quiet giggle escaping her mouth.

“Mind if we tag along?” The other guy asked, obviously reacting to Kourtney’s giggle, but attempting to hide it. The girls noticed. They always do.

“I’m Chase,” the first boy guy introduced himself. Failing to extend his hand in a formal hand shake. The same formal hand shake so normal over previous years grew disgusting, a joke, never necessary. A simple introduction, name, then name in response, was enough for Kourtney and Lauren. Then the relationship moved straight into friendship, if not more. The time for hugs and simple, polite, completely innocent kisses-on-the-cheek, if the attraction was great enough at least.

“And I am Kyle,” the other guy said. “What are your ladies names?”

This time Kourt spoke for the two of them, “I am Kourtney, and my friend here is Lauren.” Kourt said, the foursome still in motion, as she gestured her hand toward her best friend. Lauren nodded her head and eyed her best friend, then eyed the boys. Chase wore a tight black t-shirt, showing off his muscular, out of proportion, chest, and dark blue designer jeans, full of pre-cut holes and awe-inspiring. Jet black sunglasses sat propped on top of his head, on his full head of hair brushed backed behind his ears. His jaw line, beginning to jut from where his raggedly, manicured hair ended – he, much like Paul, was stone. Kyle, who walked on the on the opposite end of the girls, was a bit harder for Lauren to judge, but she managed. He wore a white hoodie, zipped up the near the top with a blue Hollister shirt underneath – only the “OLLIS” of the billboard shirt he wore visible from under his sweater. He too wore designer jeans, white washed and dark blue. Kyle’s hair was a brown-blond, a short crew cut, gel styled but not rock hard atop his hair. Unlike his friend, he held softer features, but still looked masculine.

Lauren finished judging the two guys, her best friend/partner in crime keeping small talk so the boys never noticed, and she decided these two were definitely up to par and should be graced by their company. The group walked to the a table in the middle of the food court, a home base of sorts to mull over and decide what they should all eat. As well as a place to get to know one another. The sat on each side of the square table, the girl’s sat across from one another, one boy on either side, smiles plastered to their faces.

With conversation in full swing, Lauren leading it, with talk of habits and fun times, and of course – parties. The whole group loved partying. Kourt, who held her phone in her hand, wondering if she received a reply, saw exactly what she dreaded – a text from Paul.

Hi hun Sat works 4 me what time tho, thanks sweetie (ill c ya soon)

“Hey Blondie, put that phone away, it’s impolite!” Kyle said as he leaned across the corner of the table, snapping her phone shut, pushing the answer farther back giving Kourt a rush of relief she so required. So much relief in fact that she failed to see the hypocrisy in the blond guy calling her blondie. “Stop talking to whoever that loser on the other end if, and I assume he is a loser because he isn’t here keeping you company, and talk to me. Introduce yourself, I want to know everything about you”

Kourt began her small talk, with the phone in her purse and Paul, pushed to the back of her mind, “Well, as you know, like my name is Kourtney,” she eyed the food around her, and lifted her head up as she sniffed the warm, fast-food air, “wanna grab some food?”

“Sounds like a plan Blondie,” Kyle said as he got up and extended his hand to Kourtney, helping her from her chair. The two walked from the table at which they sat to the restaurants along the perimeter of the food court. Burger King, Queso Queso, Footsies, and Panda Express all mixing in the air, the aroma exciting all of the individuals in the room. Kyle began to salivate as they walked along, though the food was not totally to blame.”So, what do you want to eat?” Kyle said, matching slow pace with Kourt, eying the food establishments around.

“Hm, how about a foot long?” Kourt said, fluttering her eye lashes at Kyle and biting her lower lip, beginning to play the game with Kyle that she already won with her best friend Lauren. Kourtney wanted control.

While Kyle pondered the perfect answer, his move in Kourtney’s little game, Lauren and Chase also decided to leave the table and catch up with the other pair. From behind Kourtney, Lauren said, “Did I hear something about foot longs? Kourtney! You, like, naughty girl!”

“Hey, hey girls calm down, I’m actually in the mood for Chinese so I’m going to head over to Panda. Kyle, what about you?” Chase asked his buddy as the group stood, still, at a loss of what to eat, minds full of sexual innuendo.

“Sounds good man, I do love me some Panda.” Kyle responded, immediately realizing his choice of words and going flush in embarrassment. “Well, not actual Panda, but like, the food from there.” Kyle said, shoving his hands into his pockets.

“We gotcha Kyle, well, go grab your Panda boys, well meet you at the table.” Lauren said.

“Ya, all jokes aside I do totally feel like a sub.” Kourt added to her friends statement.

“Alrighty, see ya soon girls.” Chase said as he walked acorss the middle of the food court to the Panda Express on the other end. Kourt and Lauren headed down the path they were on to the Footsies in the back corner of the room.

“So, like, what do you think of ‘em?” Lor asked Kourt with a delightful intrigue in her voice, accompanying her normal upward inflection.

“Eh, nothing special, good to look at but Kyle is a bit to shy for me, plus Chase totally seems like an intrusive dick.” The pair finally made their way up to the counter, and Kourt placed her order to the employee behind the counter. “Hm, turkey with cheese, lettuce, tomato, and salt and pepper.”

“Ya, I totally agree. I mean, like, both of them are totally hot. But Chase never shuts the hell up. I mean, if I knew him better I’d rather him just kiss me then keep talking like a fool.” Lor said to her best friend before beginning to place her own order for lunch.

The only reply from Kourtney was a nod while while she said, “No, a six inch is fine. Ya, chips and a drink sounds perfect, like, diet coke okay?” Lauren finished her order soon after Kourt and they began to walk away subs in hand. “So, wanna like, ditch em? We could even grab their numbers if you want to make this game, like, more fun.”

“Sounds like perfect to me.” Lauren’s reply came while the pair got to the table, pulled out their seats, and sat down. They knew all well it would not be for too long. By the time the girls unwrapped their subs the boys made their way back to the table and sat down with large trays, topped with steaming overly soy sauced, fast food faux Asian concoctions.

“I hope your ladies time without wasn’t too terrible.” Chase attempted at a joke, but simply pushed forward the urge to leave that flooded the girls’ minds.

“Actually boys,” Lauren said between bites “looks like we have to get going early, but, I like know myself and my bestie would love to have your numbers. Ya know, like, keep in touch and stuff.” Lauren said while Kourt chewed her bite. Both girls fluttered their eye lashes, playing that game. The same game they competed for high scores against all the other girls. Attempting to lead the boys on the longest, get all that they wanted, all they needed, all the attention – then either leave, or settle down, depending strictly on their mood of course. Now, the boys were no better, falling for this silly game since their physical attraction to the female players was so great they let themselves fall. They let themselves get played. Under the general assumption these guys were good at games, becoming a player, even if on the losing end, just pushed forward that truth. A tricky though common occurrence between any and all human beings.

The group exchanged numbers, Chase of course asked “Why leave so suddenly girls, just want to break my heart?” His melodramatics failing to appeal as much as he expected.

“Oh, just gotta get the last bit of our shopping in before like we have to go. Which sadly, is way too soon. But we will talk later guys, don’t sweat it.” Kourt said to ease the situation. Set the trap. While putting her phone away, two new numbers stored as contacts, she thought of Paul, and his effect on her, and these two guys, seemingly so innocent, but doubting it all. Then doubting herself. “Let’s get going Lor,” Kourt said as she shook the uneasiness for the time and hood her arm in Lauren’s. The best friends made their way out of the food court, back into the massive mall, for shopping. To continue girl’s night guyless, loving the attention, ending it for now, and knowing for this – they pulled the strings.

Tom paced the street in his neighborhood. He sat in his room for so long, he grew stir crazy playing games for so long in his room. Glancing at his clock at the start of his game, the next he knew, hours passed, the sun set, seasons changed, animals went extinct and people were flying by wearing jet packs out side of his window. He knew fresh air would cure his temporary insanity. The wind whipped by, brisk and biting, a cold just enjoyable where anymore proved harsh and painful. Tom basked in it. He loved the feel of being outside, being with nature. This thought, this love, played in his mind while he strolled the paved streets, passing the white washed homes, with fake grass, beautifully cut. He rolled his eyes at the blasphemy of reality he lived in. The microcosm of made-up beauty.

And when I say finished I mean I beat it on normal; there is still Playthrough 2 to come where every

And when I say finished I mean I beat it on normal; there is still Playthrough 2 to come where everyone is super tough, and lots of 4 player online play and duelling. Safe to say I am getting my 50 dollars worth out of this game.

Okay so my Hunter has completed every last mission in the game with 21 hours 12 minutes of play on the clock. On a second playthrough I expect about fifteen hours; not a whole lot of time was spent trying to figure stuff out. A lot more time was spent putting rounds through bandits heads and watching the beautiful chunks spray in all directions.

Visually I am in love. The concept art slash comic book style slash cell shading works wonders. Each piece of the terrain has a full texture which is then surrounded with a chunky black border that stays the same thickness at every distance: so from far away things appear blocky and chunky, resolving into pieces when you approach. The enemies are one of six types but with many variations, each with their own unique model. The guns – oh, the guns. Having picked up easily five hundred guns and used most of them I have to say they are still fresh and exciting. The models are created with a modular system, so each one can have any of a dozen different magazines, stocks, barrels, scopes, etc, etc. Which means no two guns look alike, and you really notice it when you’re handling so much weaponry. Borderlands doesn’t let the modular randomising system take over though: I came across easily twenty ‘unique’ weapons all obviously hand-crafted to look specifically awesome – most notably the Patton revolver, all brushed silver with a minimalist, Old-West revolver appearance, sporting a quote from General Patton in its description.

The best bit about the guns isn’t how they look like, or even how they sound – though the crack! of each revolver has a distinctive sound, and are all equally satisfying – it’s the shooting. I have never experienced such super-smooth hit detection. Critical spots are difficult targets, but not because the hitboxes are off: they are difficult because the models move realistically, duck behind cover, work in pairs (nothing amused me more than hearing a bandit yell “Nobody kills my buddy and lives!”, except maybe Tannis’s utter insanity) and die in such a satisfying manner.

That said, it’s not a perfect game. Multiplayer is deeply flawed, requiring players to host their own servers on their own internet connections, requires port forwarding and the like to avoid 15 second timeouts, and much of the glorious hit detection is lost in the milliseconds of lag. The bosses, while climactic and terrifying and introduced with hilarious, Inglourious Basterd-style freeze frames, tend towards being too static and simply beefcakes without much killing ability. Maybe as a Hunter my play style exacerbated that issue as I tended to run backwards and shoot them in the eyes, but that’s still a point against them. Indeed, I died once to Sledge and killed every other boss first try. I found myself dying to the average grunt when I wasn’t paying attention or managed to get caught in between two or three of them. The challenge level in the first playthrough is bumpy, though – a badass (elite) grunt, due to its clever AI or good positioning, was often more challenging than the boss he was protecting.

That said, the battle against Krom ranks in my top five boss fights of all time, up there with Salazar from Resident Evil 4.

Mission design was seamless, pulling of the go-here do-that kill-this-guy turn-in quest system from many an MMO with relative ease for a shooter. The missions themselves are creative, amusing, varied, and sometimes even challenging on their own.

Anyway, the final verdict is that it’s a great game: the loot system of Diablo, the aesthetics and black humour of the Fallout series, a peerless shooting experience and characters worthy of Bioware. Don’t be fooled by the sandbox gameplay tagline – this is pretty linear. And damnit, that’s a good thing!

OXCGNs Dual Borderlands Review Debate

With Aaron & Arthur

©2009 Aaron Klein/Arthur Kotsopoulos:

OXCGN does new things all the time, and with Borderlands we’re doing a dual review discussion between two of the top reviewers on the site. There will be a special Borderlands Co-Op review a little later, once the team have given the game a solid workout, but here’s the guys with their views on Gearbox’s new IP, Borderlands.

Aaron Klein: The more I heard about Borderlands the more I got excited to check the game out. The tone of the press had been mostly doubtful, touching on how Gearbox was almost desperately racing to distinguish itself from a saturated release season populated with established gaming titans like Rock Band, Halo, Uncharted 2, Mario, Call of Duty and other anticipated new intellectual properties like Dragon Age: Origins and Brutal Legend.

A relatively late switch of gears in artistic direction to use hand-drawn textures, a controversial portrayal of a stylized suicide as cover art and the inclusion of a catchy, popular tune from Cage the Elephant in advertising trailers combine to illustrate just how badly 2K Games and Gearbox want you to pick up Borderlands.

• Borderlands In-Game Developer Walkthrough

• You want guns, we’ve got guns, Lots of BFG’s right here.

Arthur Kotsopoulos: Funny you should say that because before they changed the art style and serious tone of the game I also wasn’t interested. Sure, there were hundreds of thousands of variations in weaponry, but other than that the game offered nothing to really make me want to buy it

It wasn’t until they changed the graphical art style and started to post up viral videos with that comedic touch to them. From this point on I got interested in the game from reading previews, viewing screen shots to watching video walk through of game play, It was a marketing strategy that worked for me.

• OXCGN’s recent 2k Games/Borderlands gig in Sydney meets Lilith

Aaron: And none of this is bad. I agree the roll out has been a masterpiece of marketing and has been as successful as possible at carving out a niche for Borderlands to have success. The big question is whether or not the actual gameplay can capitalize off this attention.

Arthur: I wasn’t expecting much from this game other than it being unique. Having had time to dig into it, I have to say I am loving it! The chance that any weapon I find could be my new favorite weapon is great. You will never find the exact same weapon twice.

Sure the game starts off slow, but this just gets you comfortable with the basics to get you ready for the long journey ahead in the barren wasteland of Pandora in search of the Vault.

How are you in all finding the integration of game play, travel and missions within Pandora?

Aaron: The weapons are awesome, and that is a great observation. Your character is never totally optimized. There is always a better weapon out there somewhere. That keeps it interesting for the exact reason you stated: The next weapon you find on your ground could end up being your favorite.

I get a little OCD about the weapons, though. When new guns are so plentiful I tend to spend a lot of time tweaking my arms and making tiny decisions between the rifle with more power but less accuracy and the one with an increased firing rate but low power.

This is both good and bad. A couple of times I wanted to set the controller down just because this micromanagement was overly taxing. But then I realized, “hey, you don’t have to do this. Just run out there and shoot.”

Arthur: Exactly. It’s has enough RPG elements to keep you swapping out the weapons in your backpack as you level up. Yet at the same time not overly taxing to the point where you have to organize which weapons have this scope, barrel, handle and ammo capacity.

It’s an FPS that’s challenging, yet easily accessible. Borderlands blends the genres in a way I haven’t seen done so well since Bioshock. You have an open, sandbox world, a light RPG skill tree for each of the four character classes and hundreds of thousands of weapons with various stats and augments such as fire, electricity, poison and so forth.

My main gripe with this is the driving. It follows the Halo-esque driving controls except it doesn’t do Halo justice. If you clip a tire on the road or small rock the car just lifts in the air funny like it weighs barely anything. I tried to avoid the driving as much as possible because even when you do master it, it still becomes annoying.

• You want guns, we’ve got guns, Lots of BFG’s right here.

Aaron: I was worried about the driving heading into this game, and my worries were warranted. The driving is not very intuitive. Having the car go in whatever direction the camera is pointing means you can’t look off to your peripheral without driving off the road. Plus the vehicle gets hung up really easily on the environment. And when it gets stuck, it’s stuck. There’s no rocking it out.

Driving just tends to be a pain. Gearbox was already trying to do so much with the role-playing shooter dynamic. The vehicle was the darkest cloud over this game.

The map itself is laid out with different “levels” connected by a common area. It’s open, sure, but it’s also constraining because the map is mostly the land between canyon walls and not a wide open plain, like Fallout 3. I say this type of map is not conducive to the driving.

Arthur: Sure the map isn’t open like Fallout 3, but it is still massive. I’m currently only on my first play through, taking my time, and I have still to enter a few sections of the game. At the moment I’m in awe at how many areas there are and exactly how big each of them is.

Aaron: But you need to have some way to get around the world. And driving, as bad as it is, is still better than walking. And it is more interesting when you team up in co-op mode to have someone in the gunner’s nest.

Arthur: Yeah in co-op, especially four-player co-op, the game really shines. The game becomes much more fun. You receive better loot and acquire more experience points as enemies become harder.

Loot must be shared accordingly though, as any player can take any loot. That can make for frustrating times if you found an awesome weapon and someone nabs it from under your nose.

It is also very hard when you are levels apart from your co-op partners. The game can become quite brutal and unforgiving.

• Meet your characters that accompany you in Pandora – Borderlands

Aaron: I agree, the game is pretty solid as a single player title. But it absolutely shines in the co-op. I’ve been trying to put my finger on why exactly that is… and I think it works so well because the challenge and number of enemies ramp up to coincide with the number of players and their levels.

The fight for loot afterwards also contributes to the fun, as it gives everybody something to talk about. “Check out this sweet sniper rifle, does the Hunter want it?”

Plus, sharing XP and gold means players level up at relatively the same level.

A testament to the different ways to play the game: while you planned and shared the loot, when playing split screen with a friend we were having fun rushing to beat each other to the glowing gun on the ground, and even waiting to revive each other until the other had picked the battlefield clean of ammo & mods.

But I can see how that could be annoying when playing with strangers.

Arthur: Whilst it does feature a form of dueling in co-op with fellow teammates it’s a shame the game doesn’t feature online multiplayer.

I supposed it wouldn’t work seeing as not 1 gun is ever the same so having the ability to take in your weapons from single player to multiplayer would be greatly unfair.

Aaron: I have a co-op cautionary tale to share, too: Make sure any characters your friends build on your system are associated with a gamertag. My buddy was playing without signing in to one, and when we tried to continue the next day his level 11 Hunter was gone.

Luckily I had a level 20 Soldier, and we were able to power level his new character up pretty quickly, but not before he got tired of the game because he felt so underpowered against the enemies we were up against in the current missions

Arthur: Still, I believe co-op is where Borderlands truly excels. Whilst other reviewers think it doesn’t work as well as it should, I believe it works flawlessly as the enemies become more tough and much better loot is dropped.

It’s a battle of who can find the better loot, that battle is always fun, time and time again. What’s even better is the fact you can duel each other at any time by a simple melee attack to see who is the better of the Vault hunters.

It’s great fun to have your team mate bragging about an awesome weapon he just found only to have dueled you then defeated by your awesome level 30 combat rifle with corrosive damage.

It’s satisfying and enjoyable all in the one package and I feel Borderlands is probably one of the most fun and unique games to have been released in the past year.

Aaron: I agree. It captured the “one more level” draw of RPGs and has earned itself a place in my disc drive for quite a while.

Ev sinema sistemiyle internet üzerinden video izlemek, gelecekte standart hale gelecek.

Yeni Audio Return Channel

Yeni HDMI kablolar almak gerekecek

by Leigh Alexander – Gamasutra.com

Jerry Bruckheimer wants a film adaptation of 2K Games’ PC relatively low-profile strategy title, which sees the U.S. in the midst of a second civil war.

According to a report in Hollywood trade paper Variety, Babylon 5 creator and Ninja Assassin movie writer J. Michael Straczynski will write the adaptation of the game.

The original title, a turn-based strategy game, was created by Tropico creators PopTop Software and published by Take-Two subsidiary 2K Games in 2005.

In the original video game version of Shattered Union, a terrorist attack on Washington D.C. leaves the nation without decisive leadership, and individual states and territories form their own governments to fight amongst themselves.

This isn’t the only game-related project that Pirates Of The Caribbean producer Bruckheimer currently has in progress. He is also almost completed on a film version of Jordan Mechner’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, which wil debut in May 2010.

As for Take-Two and 2K, the film adaptation of the company’s BioShock is still in the works at Universal, although its original 2010 release date has been put back due to budget concerns.

Back around E3 2008, I remember the first time I saw footage of the Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom. I don’t remember from what media source, but ever since then the game had lingered in the back of my head wondering if I would ever get a chance to play the title that looked so unique and artistic. Time has passed and 2D platforming has found a home in the current videogame market as downloadable titles, and other 2D platform games have been released to critical acclaim that utilizes time manipulation in their gameplay (see: Braid). Nonetheless, the whole vintage silent movie art style and the story of one man’s obsession with pie will give this game its own identity when 2K Play thankfully brings the game to masses via Xbox Live and PC in early 2010. Until then, Mr. Winterbottom would like to wish you a Happy Halloween with some new screens and artwork. Sean C.

2 years ago in 2007 is when I first heard of Borderlands. Without much detail I let it pass by me in

2 years ago in 2007 is when I first heard of Borderlands. Without much detail I let it pass by me in lieu of many quality grade A titles. In early 2009 when they started revealing features and more details about Borderlands I started to take quite a bit of notice. Until one statement caught my ears by one of the best surprises the game had to offer. It said,

“Borderlands has over 200,000 different guns.”

And that statement alone I could not believe, until they started revealing that the game is a cross between an MMO with only 4 players and Diablo with guns. Its very action oriented and reminds me a lot about Fallout 3 when it comes to atmosphere. But the world of pandora is quite lonley without it’s 4 player Co-Op.

The Story centers around you, or one of 4 character classes with limited customization that is on a search to find The Vault. Because the Vault holds Eridian Technology which when you find an Eridian Gun you will know why these people want them. In two words – Unlimited Ammunition. Borderlands came out on October 20, 2009 which just also happened to be my 18th birthday so I was very happy to be at a Wal-Mart at midnight to celebrate both it’s release and my coming of age.

I’ve played through the game and all of it’s sidequests, but the better loot comes from multiple playthroughs, while it can feel a little grindy at times the action oriented gameplay tears away from the RPG elements. The menu system could be revamped to allow a fast real time equipment system. And the only armors are sheilds…which was disapointing because I would like to trick my character out with custom armor for all to see.

I want to see a sequel for Borderlands but first I demand:

More Dungeonlike Areas Including raids with up to 8 Players

Gun Customization – Including adding clips or scopes

Less Grind Style Quests

Flesh out the vehicle sections

Improve the scaling of areas

More boss fights

Loot system that actually feels like your getting rewarded better loot for better enemies instead of random all the time.

Platanium Guns that don’t suck

Borderlands is an amazing game despite some of it’s minor flaws. It doesn’t feel unfinished it just leaves you wanting more!

Bioshock 2 I`m wainting for you; Papa loves mambo….

Multijugador

[algo de Army of Two 40th Day...]

Last time out I said that I’d probably review Bioshock next in order to keep to my style of being about 2 years behind the bandwagon’s of gaming, and guess what that’s exactly what’s in store for you here today. The game is the spiritual successor to the System Shock series, which are based around the same principles of lonely existence, powerups, shooting and of course a wrench. I haven’t personally played the SS series so I can’t compare the two sets. This time the game follows the life and times of yet another aggressively silent man, big fucking shocker. However this time he’s not battling hordes of murderous aliens, oh no this time out it’s hordes of murderous humans. Well they were human and after a particularly huge drugs binge they’ve all gone a little bit bananas and spend they’re days shooting up and trying to kill you and some little girls, not a nice crowd really.

The hordes of inhuman murderers does really give you some indication as to the game’s genre, this isn’t you average typing tutor, it’s a full on action-horror game – with much more emphasise on the action rather than the horror unfortunately. That’s not saying that the game is bad and to start with the atmosphere of the game is very good, but after a while you become so powerful and the same lines of enemies become so repetitive that any sense of horror melts away. Saying that, they are a few scary moments – for example the first time I encountered one of the teleporting buggers he just appeared behind me and cast his shadow on the wall in front, which was a slightly pant wetting moment but after a swift turn and a couple of whacks across the head with a wrench and he was taken care of. Also your Irish support character, who sounds like Colm Meaney, doesn’t help with the atmosphere issue.

The actual story of the game is pretty original and very well delivered, with you not really knowing what the hell is going on for most of the game and then suddenly the pieces start to fall into place and the intriguing-ness of the whole thing shines through. I knew it was obvious that the aforementioned Irish lad would betray you but still when it happened I was shocked to see just how evil he really was and he stops doing his Colm Meaney impression and instead starts thinking he’s Al Capone or something. The game is built around a moral choice system, you can choose either to; murder little girls, or help them – I choose to help them because I’m a beacon of all things good in this land. The point of making you choose whether or not to kill the little girls arises because they hold a special compound called ADAM, which helps to power you up and you get less of it if you save the girls. So you can choose to save them all and have a clean conscience or you can simply remember the fact that they’re not real and therefore nothing you do to them is evil or cruel.

The choices you make determine what ending you get, but as there are only two (well three techniquely, but two of them are the same but with a less angry voice-over) there isn’t much choice. Moral choice systems in games have been around for ages, why can’t they give the player more options? I mean Silent Hill 2 worked around the same thing and that game gave you six different endings and that came out 8 bloody years ago.

The most disappointing thing about the game, however, is the simple fact that you don’t get to kill either of the main ‘boss’ characters in the story. The first is Andrew Ryan, founder of Ryan Industries and creator of the City of Rapture. The character kills Ryan by smacking him over the head repeatedly with a golf club, but this happens in a cutscene. The second is Frank Fontaine, who is the real bad guy of the story and your former Irish friend, sure you get to fire enough bullets at him to wipe out the entire French Army, but he is then finished off in another cutscene.

Now then, would you kindly go away now.
