I remember when my partner and I did the Scandinavian Radio Soulwax Tour with Soulwax & 2MANYDJSs Stephen saying to me – tearfully – after years of touring their albums, and upon start of the Scandinavian leg: “I really can’t take this anymore – I SO wanted to stay at home…!”.

I guess touring Hell can get to the best of us, but it seems like the tireless Belgiums haven’t stopped touring since, and are heading out yet again for another round of Soulwaxmas dates around Europe leading up to the silly season.

Which is probably why this Mixhell edit of Soulwax’s alter ego – Samantha Fu – and the rocking “Theme From Discotheque” is currently being seeded by Mixhell since they will appear on the tour alongside the usual suspects like Soulwax themselves, 2MANYDJs, Erol Alkan, Aeroplane and string of other bright lights.

There will be carnage in Christmas grotto – for sure!

No point in explaining “Theme From Discotheque” – it does exactly what you’ve come to expect from Soulwax and Mixhell, and in combined strength it does exactly what it says on the tin:

“Pounding Techno Music…….”!

Thursday, November 5 saw the Cardiff journalism post-graduates welcome the charismatic and fascinating Dan Meadows.

In 1973 he set off in a double-decker bus – JRR404 – which quickly became known as the Free Photographic Omnibus.

He travelled the county taking photos of people, and has since retraced them and found out the story of how his subjects moved on after a quarter of a century.

This was Mr Meadows’ first step into journalism and since then he has worked for Granada television, as a lecturer and the BBC, though it was his discovery in America of digital storytelling which engaged the audience put in front of him.

Digital storytelling is a different way of getting a message across.

Mr Meadows describes them as:

Short, personal, multimedia scraps of TV that people can make for themselves.

They’re ‘mini-movies’. Desktop computers enabled with video editing software are used to synchronise recorded spoken narratives with scans of personal photographs.

Old photos found by scratching around in the house can be given a new lease of life, and bought very much into the twenty-first century or Digital Britain for use of another catchphrase.

Below are three examples:

1 - The first is from the BBC’s project Capture Wales which was launched with Dan Meadows at the spearhead of it, and demonstrates an average person’s ability to utilise this tool. This example is Paula Richards’ experience of the Welsh Miners Strike.

2 - The second shows how they can be used in news reporting as David Reynolds illustrates Lyndon B. Johnson’s final days in the Oval Office (click on the picture to be taken to the BBC website)

3 - The final example is taken from a documentary – Part of the Weekend Never Dies – and utilises animation to get a point across in a similar vein to those in Capture Wales.

So I Just got back from a mind blowing weekend in LA, where I attended The Hard Haunted Mansion for the second year in a row. I had an incredible time with some good friends. It’s a shame Halloween is over, definitely one of my favorite holidays. Here is a list of my top 5 favorite acts from Hard, oh… and a couple tracks from these artists that you might enjoy as well.

At the top of the list for me was the Berlin Based Duo Modeselektor, their set was absolute murder, and the Alien Surgery that was being performed onstage during their performance was disgustingly brilliant. My only regret was not being close enough to the stage to have the Spaghetti/ Alien guts hurled onto me

Always Deawale! The brothers did it again with a show that had some of the best visuals I have seen in a long time + who else have you heard that can mix Slayer into Dolly Parton so seamlessly

Il problema non è PIG -ovviamente ho citato soltanto alcuni degli articoli; oltre alla marchettona a FILA, ci sono anche cose davvero interessanti-, il problema è la scena. Una scena che si è nutrita di autorefernzialità in maniera forse eccessiva e che ora fluttua sazia di sè stessa senza una meta, sbuffando come dopo un pranzo natalizio, pronta a scoppiare come una bolla vuota.

E ora la nausea ce l’ho io.

Serve aria fresca, aria nuova.

Serve chiudere tutto e guardare fuori.

Andare a fare una passeggiata sui monti, raccogliere le castagne. Mangiarle con del vino rosso e fare l’amore.

Magari, quando tornerà la voglia di uscire, ci sarà qualcosa di nuovo da conoscere.

Along with my production partner we did 4 gigs on the Scandinavian leg of the Radio Soulwax Tour, and to be honest I don’t remember that much from those gigs.

I remember Headman being the nicest guy. I remember Boys Noize being all German and peeved off with us playing him back-to-start and claiming we played too hard prior to him going on (lightweight!), and I remember Justice being the biggest pricks in the world! Yes it’s true – take it from someone who’s spend time with them – they are exactly the big, arrogant, french twats as they appear in “A Cross The Univers”!

What I do remember clearly is the havoc created by the brothers Dewaele aka Soulwax aka 2ManyDJs, and the crowds looking exactly as they do, from the booth, in the picture above amongst the stack of CD’s and 12inches virtually flying around the booth (although there’s still some distance to Jeff Mills!).

While the world await their forthcoming new Soulwax album – here’s 4′19″mins. of 2ManyDJs creating havoc on Felix Da Housecat’s monumental – “Elvi$” – with Stephen and David doing what they do best……editing the f*** out of Felix, leaving all the best parts and throwing in some Human League for good measure.

Heads Will Roll says…

It’s time to get your credit cards ready and get officially excited as Perth’s 2010 Summadayze line-up is announced and the presale begins September 9 at 9am. Considering how fast Fake Blood and Sinden, who are both on this line-up, sold out Villa expect tickets to this festival to be very hard to come by in a very short time. If you’re regular reader of Heads Will Roll you may have noticed how excited we are about seeing 2manydjs “live show”, click here and here to possibly understand where we are coming from. Also on the line-up is James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem) in DJ mode, which means disco to the max. Carl Cox is making good use of his Australian residency, Sharam (Deep Dish) is sure to impress. Eddie Halliwell should make Perth’s trance community stock up on their novelty paraphernalia. The chin strokers will be pretending they aren’t impressed, but secretly wetting themselves for Danny Howells, Josh Wink and Nic Fanciulli. The blog kids have Treasure Fingers, Riton, Fake Blood and Sinden. As this is just the first line-up you can expect more artists to be announced in the coming months, hopefully the Proxy is one of those included.

Summer is on it’s way, which means a whole lot more tour announcements. Rhythm & Vines have just released their second announcement and it’s looking interesting. Their biggest pull? Moby. Strange, but I’m not going to act like I know everything. Also added to the line-up are Editors, 2ManyDJ’s, Future of the Left, White Rabbits, Ajax, Bang Gang and DJ Emerson Todd. The second announcement also sees a few more kiwi acts confirmed with artists such as Dictaphone Blues, Opsensouls, Dane Rumble and An Emerald City set to play.

Bob Marley’s former band The Wailers, Now The Original Wailers, have also announced they will play four New Zealand shows in November. The group led by Junior Marvin and Al Anderson will be playing the classic 1977 album ‘Exodus’ in its entirety, so expect to see an exciting performance from the group. Akron/Family, who released their new album ‘Set ‘Em Wild, Set ‘Em Free’ this year, have announced they will play two New Zealand shows later this year. The group will play Tuesday December 15 at the Kings Arms in Auckland and Wednesday December 16 at Bar Bodega in Wellington. Tickets go on sale on September 7 from Real Groovy, Slow Boat Records and Under The Radar.

You might have seen their new live show appearing on youtube, well get excited because 2manyDJs have just been added to the New Zealand NYE festival Rhythm & Vines and they are bringing their live show! With a barrage of Australian festivals about to release their line-ups over the next week or so you can expect 2manydjs to be bringing the awesome to a city near you.

Other acts playing Rhythm & Vines include LCD Soundsytem (DJ set), Juan Maclean and the Proxy.

OK – gently casting aside the fact that V festival is the festival for people who shouldn’t go to festivals – and also that the line-up is worse than a Top of The Pops show a few months prior to getting the axe (good job we were there) – here’s our little account of we ran tings.

When the We Are Not A Rock Band DJ’s (Matt Barker and The Veev) got a call asking if they could play at (cha)V, they had no idea what they were getting themselves into. Initially, they were booked to play on the Arena stage filling the slot between every band. This meant warming up for the likes of 2manydj’s, MGMT, Lady Gaga, Sneaky Soundsystem amongst many others (including Will Young!). Little did they know that the promoters had bigger plans. Yes, they were to play a 4 hour set on the Friday – meaning they were the ONLY act playing music at the festival on that day (it’s a Sat/Sun festival). The results were immense.

Emmabodafestivalen går från klarhet till klarhet. Utanför ett litet samhälle mitt ute i den småländska urskogen arrangeras för andra året något som kan vara sveriges största electrofest. Tidigare år (1988-2007) var det ett indie-näste fyllt av rödvinspimplande shoegazers i 14-årsåldern, så icke fallet numera. Förra året missade jag bittert Justice när de rockade röv ute i mossan. Idag missar jag 2manydjs, the bloody beetroots, boys noize och detektivbyrån (som lär vara bättre än på arvika).

One, two, weep, weep!

Last week was my fifth year at FIB, and since 2005, it has morphed into something of a Cosa-del-Reading festival.

Though I keep going back, each year the changes seem more pronounced; more British, less Spanish, less exciting line-ups, and the increasing expense of the festival itself. This year however, the festival’s ownership being handed over to the Mean Fiddler group was anything but unnoticeable in every element from the lineup to the prices.

I probably sound like a massive hypocrite, but in my defence, I wouldn’t revisit year-in-year out if I was bitter about everything. The Costa del Azahar is an amazing stretch of coast, Benicassim itself is a small but hip little town, and the festival’s 9 day format is incomparable to muddy weekends in Berkshire.

It’s the three pre-music days of camping which give the festival a unique feel, and this year, one of these happened to be my 22nd birthday; this helped amplify the joyous mood of the week. As for the musc itself, most was enjoyable, though partly dampened by bad weather of all things.

Unashamedly, I enjoyed Oasis, though I’ve seen it all before, they do throw a decent show, and  unlike some bands,  they predictably but comfortably ’play the hits’ . The crowd of thousands of lager drenched, mostly balding and sunburt early-thirtees Brits may have been something of an eye-sore; but it’s always astounding to see so many people brought together by a group who, though admitedly past their sell-by date, are still able to send the masses into a state of natural [possibly beer-aided] euphoria. It seems incredible that 15 year-old chart hits such as ‘Live Forever’ and ‘Cigarettes & Alcohol’ can still light up a crowd despite unfathomable radio play over the past decade.

On the second night, after some pre-festival drinking, myself and my friends, along with thousands of others headed to the arena only to be met with gale force winds which created something of a makeshift-sandstorm in the arena. Saeed gleefully found a Mojito, and we all went home. I was somewhat unflustered at the missed day of music, though conversely many were severely agitated at Kings of Leon cancelling their slot.

By ‘day two proper’ the festival had resumed; Peaches did her, uh, ‘thing’, and 2ManyDJs kept the beat of the weekend going with their granduous bastard-pop mash-up of everything from Justice and Aphex Twin to Michael Jackson and Lips Inc.

Though some unannounced timetable jiggling on the final night meant I missed Calexico and lost my friends, it was  watching TV on the Radio’s part-pseudo-jazz, part-psychedelia thing from the front barrier in a near empty crowd as the sun went down which was pure bliss. Many of their songs’ live re-imaginings rendered them unrecognisable from the album arrangements, particularly with closer ‘Staring at the Sun’ which played out more shoegaze than it’s original  minimalist electronic form. After this dreamscape of a set, I wandered over to the Escenario Verde to sympathetically watch the Psychedelic Furs, who recieved neither applause nor appraisal from onlookers despite being entertaining to watch.

There was of course, still time for the other gargantuan band of the week, The Killers, who drew everyone to the main stage for another predictable but pallatable hits-ahoy slot, but it was not until after France’s Rinôçérôse pumped out their strange but cohesive melding of guitar rock and ‘phat bass’ that it all ended.

In retrospect, 9 days flies by quicker than expected, but it was an eventful week. My feet are only just healing from all of the shape-throwing, and it was, of course refreshing to leave the smog-ridden English capital for a short while. Suffice to say, while I’ve always loved FIB, after five consecutive years, now may be the time to find another festival, which has yet to be pillaged by the British Isles.

Strangely enough – last time I wrote about Erol Alkan (see below) and 2ManyDJs they also appeared back-to-back as posts with their respective Essential Mixes from the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend.

Now – following the second 6 Mix session by Erol Alkan  - the brothers Dewaele stepped up to the BBC decks on 17th. July, and gave you 2 solid hours of…….well – just about everything they could get their hands on – including the BBC kitchen sink, and some historic news clippings.
