A grande surpresa é que ela apareceu como convidada da banda The Specials. “Fã de carteirinha”, Amy já regravou duas músicas interprestadas pela banda (You’re Wondering Now e Hey Little Rich Girl) e diz que essa é usa banda favorita. Depois de um tempo longe dos palcos ela volta em grande estilo!

Yesterday, before the  father’s day celebration I received another gift from dad. It’s a Citizen Eco-Drive. A solar powered watch that needs no battery to operate. Intriguing ei?

Most Eco-Drive watches are equipped with a special titanium lithium-ion  secondary battery that is charged by an amorphous silicon silicon solar cell (mother pearl cover) located behind the dial. The titanium lithium-ion composition precludes it from being affected from the regular charge/discharge cycle of other types of rechargeable batteries. Light passes through the covering crystal and dial before it reaches the solar cell.

Depending on the electronic movement model, a fully-charged secondary power cell could run with no further charging anywhere from 30 days to 3,175 days (8.7 years). If kept in the dark for too long, some movement models engage a hibernate mode, where the hands of the watch would stop running but the internal quartz movement would still keep track of time. If an ample supply of light is given, the hands would move to the proper positions and resume regular timekeeping.

I don’t know what came into my father’s head to buy me another watch when I can easily buy a disposable one. Something that I can discard without having “hard feelings”. He insisted that he bought this one last December and he had a 50% discount at this, cause he thought that he’d be home before March and soppusedly a birthday gift. Sigh*

I just hoped he didn’t bought me one, instead saved and added the money to my Nikon D90… :’(

Cuando digo que uno de mis estilos de música preferidos es el ska, todo el mundo dice: ah, como Ska-P… ummm, bueno, sí, pero el antiguo. No, pues no he escuchado nada: no, mentira, sí que habéis escuchado. Vale, tengo que reconocer que el ska clásico es más desconocido, aunque artistas como Bob Marley bebieran de él para hacerse famosos… pero de ahí a no haber escuchado nada… el ska sufrió un revival en los 80 conocido como 2Tone; uno de los grupos banderas de este renacer fueron los Madness.

Madness se formó en 1976, y durante los 80 estuvo más semanas en las listas inglesas que cualquier otro grupo. De hecho, el tema House of fun llegó a ser número uno en Inglaterra.

Madness actuó para más de 75.000 fans en el festival Madstock en Finsbury Park, en Londres. El público bailó tanto que se registró un terremoto de 4,5 en la Escala de Richter durante la canción One Step Beyond. Em 1979, recém formado em belas artes, David Storey ingressou na equipe que, sob a direção criativa de Jerry Dammers (The Specials), criou a identidade gráfica da banda e do selo Two Tone. Quando o ‘look’ já tinha se estabelecido – terninho, gravata fina, chapéu “Pork Pie”,  sapatos “Penny Loafers” e óculos “Rayban Wayfarers” – Storey e seu comparsa John ‘Teflon’ Sims, ajudaram na criação da linguagem gráfica que acompanharia o estilo. Agora devoto à pintura, David Storey fala de seu trabalho:

In 1979, fresh from art college, David Storey joined the team that, under the creative direction of The Specials’ Jerry Dammers, created the graphic identity for the band and their label, Two Tone. While the fashion ‘look’ for Two Tone was already well established – shiny suits, thin ties, pork pie hats and penny loafers all topped-off with a pair of Rayban Wayfarers – Storey and his partner John ‘Teflon’ Sims, helped create the visuals to go with it. Now devoting his time to painting, David Storey talked to CR about his work.

CR: How did you first get into designing for the music industry?
While still at art college I was commissioned by Rocket Records to produce artwork for two Elton John tracks: ‘Someone Saved My Life Tonight’ and ‘Island Girl’, this work proved to be a stepping stone to a full-time job at Chrysalis Records once I’d graduated.

CR: The Two Tone work was done with John Sims – how did that partnership work?
John ‘Teflon’ Sims and I met at Chrysalis and subsequently worked together as a team for over ten years! We were responsible for a huge amount of Two Tone graphics.  As well as the sleeves, we produced hundreds of promotional items: posters, adverts, T-shirts, badges etc. John is a superb ‘Swiss School’ typographer while my strength tended to be on the pictorial/collage side, so we made a good team. After working in the music industry together we spent several years designing graphics for the Danish fashion company Inwear/Matinique.

CR: Two Tone had a very specific look in terms of the fashions worn by the musicians – how was that translated into a visual language for the sleeves and posters?

When the Two Tone label was launched, with the release of ‘Gangsters’ by The Specials, the fashion ‘look’ was already well established. It originated in Jamaica and was known as the Rude Boy look: shiny zoot suits, thin ties, pork pie hats, penny loafers… topped-off with a pair of Rayban Wayfarers… the most obvious reference to this in the label’s identity is the Two Tone man, known as Walt Jabsco.

CR: How involved was Jerry Dammers? What influence did he have?
Jerry Dammers, the Specials keyboard player, was the brains and creative driving force behind the Two Tone label. He had an obsessive approach to the visuals and worked very closely with John and I on everything right down to the most minute detailing. The entire visual approach came from Jerry, he wanted everything to have a fresh, simple, direct, home-spun, feel. He was great to work with but extremely demanding.

CR: Can you explain who (or rather what) Walt Jabsco was and how he came into being?
As I remember it Jerry had an old vintage bowling shirt which had the name Walt Jabsco embroidered on the front and this name just seemed to get transfered to the Two Tone man. The drawing of the man was based on a photo Jerry had of Peter Tosh.

CR: Why the checkerboard graphic?
As well as being literally made up of two tones the checkerboard pattern was meant to symbolise racial harmony, which is a brilliant idea as Two Tone was a fusion of black and white youth culture. It was first used in 1979 on the paper bag that ‘Gangsters’ was sold in.

CR: You have described your Two Tone work as having an anti-design aesthetic – can you explain what you mean?
Our whole approach was what you might call ‘none design’ meaning that Jerry would root out any attempts by John and I to introduce gratuitous design embellishments. This ruthless weeding process resulted in bold, simple, direct  graphics and is probably the main reason that the Two Tone style has such an enduring impact.

CR: What do you feel about the Two Tone work now looking back on it?
I am very proud of it. Partly because of its timeless appeal, partly because of it was integral to the success of the Two Tone label – but mainly because it packaged and promoted a unique style of music… dance music that conveyed important social and political messages to a huge audience. Probably the best examples of this are ‘Ghost Town’ and ‘Nelson Mandela’, both by The Specials.

CR: Does graphic design play such a central role in music and youth culture today? If not why not?

Personally I think graphic art is alive and well in today’s youth culture… it’s different, diverse and it’s everywhere of course. I see remarkable things happening in the gaming industry and animation in particular. Most people download their music now so you don’t see many record sleeves around. Although I did see one the other day that made me smile… my 11 year old daughter showed me a Lily Allen release, ‘Blank Expression’ , which is packaged in a perfect replica of the original Two Tone paper sleeve!

Storey and Sims have recently released a set of some of their finest Two Tone posters in limited editions of 100 Giclée prints, printed on fine art paper, available to buy from Storey’s website. CR readers can win a copy of the We Are 2 Tone print in a competition in our July issue, out June 25.

No final dos anos 70 uma galera suburbana londrina escutando muito ska jamaicano começou a montar suas próprias bandas de ska. Misturados com punks e outros tipos de pessoas essa mulecada em maioria branca começou a colar com os jamaicanos e negros ingleses que também curtiam o mesmo som. A maioria das bandas tinha um vocalista negro e um branco, dae o nome do tão famoso selo 2tone (dois tons) . A cena foi crescendo a cada dia, em um velocidade feroz para uma época sem internet. Talvez por isso, uma das mais originais cenas musicais criada em cima de uma outra. A segunda geração do ska é londrina e é formada por bandas como The Specials, Madness, Bad Manners e sem elas, o ska não seria o que é. Pete Chamber fez um guia de bandas, bares, picos, lugares por onde a geração 2 tone nasceu, passou, estudou, tocou e colou.  Um livrinho bem interessante de uma cultura tão legal. Quem se interessar é só baixar. O arquivo é super leve e o conteúdo super interessante. Divirtam-se skazeiros.

A Radiola Records resolveu comemorar os 30 anos da 2 Tone em grande estilo, esta trazendo a vocalista da banda clássica The Selecter, Pauline Black, que ira cantar musicas dos discos Too Much Pressure e Celebrate The Bullet acompanhada de músicos brasileiros como Felipe Machado, Lipe Torre e Rodrigo Cerqueira, do Firebug. 

A turnê acontece em março e passa por Porto Alegre, Curitiba, São Paulo e Rio de Janeiro. Os ingresso variam de R$30,00 a R$60,00. Segundo a Radiola, Campinas e Brasilia também podem fazer parte da turnê. BH pra variar ficou de fora dessa.

Dawning of a New Era

The Specials foi uma das maiores bandas de SKA do Reino Unido.  Ícone principal do chamado “SKA 2-Tone” (um revival do SKA jamaicano com influências do rock e pop inglês no final da década de 70) servindo de influência para as principais bandas de ska da nova geração. Em 2008 tivemos a excelente notícia de que eles estão de volta e aí vai um breve texto sobre a banda e um download esperto

The Early Years

O embrião do que viria a se tornar os Specials surgiu em Coventry (UK) em 1977, quando Jerry Dammers, Horace penter, Lynval Golding, Silverton Hutchison e Tim Strickland formaram a banda “The Automatics”. Desde o ínicio faziam a fusão do punk com o ska e fizeram certo sucesso em Coventry e região. Posteriormente, o na época vocalista Tim Strickland foi substituido por Terry Hall e com a entrada do guitarrista “Roddy Byers” estava formada a “The Coventry Automatics A.K.A. The Specials”.

O tecladista Jerry Dammers então fez um grande trabalho de divulgação de sua banda no meio musical, distribuindo k-7’s sem muito sucesso. Até que ao conseguir um contato com roadies da “única banda que importa”. Em 78, a banda sai em turnê para fazer 2 shows com ninguem menos que “The Clash”. A banda chamou a atenção de Joe Strummer que abriu espaço para “The Specials A.K.A.” (nome que foi posteriormente adotado devido a outra banda inglesa em atividade q usava o nome de “The automatics”) que abriu os shows do Clash pelo resto da tour.

Acontece que os fãs do Clash não eram tão abertos a novos sons assim, a juventude punk inglesa (provavelmente drogada…) em algumas ocasiões chegou a vaiar a mistura reggae-punk do pessoal de Coventry e até a jogar latas no palco. Mas foi nesta turnê que ao Specials A.K.A. se juntou Nevile Staples, que a época trabalhava como roadie do Clash. Staples demonstrou talento na percussão e grande identificação com a banda, se tornando membro permanente do grupo no mesmo ano.

2-Tone

O tecladista e praticamente “dono” da banda, então realiza seu sonho: criar um selo dedicado ao estilo que a banda incorporou. Baseando-se nos rude-boys londrinos, adotaram a vestimenta e por meio de uma foto de Peter Tosh em um album dos Wailers, criou a logo internacionalmente famosa de seu novo selo o 2-Tone (ou two-tone)

Então, Jerry Dammers entra em contato com Rick Rogers (empresário do “Damned”) que coloca a banda em diversos shows em Londres, onde finalmente os “Specials” chamam a atenção de um grande número de gravadoras, entre elas a “Rolling Stone Records”. Porém, a maioria não dava a Jerry a autonomia para  seu selo, o 2-tone, o que inviabilizou vários contratos. Enfim, a banda assina com a Chrysalis Records um contrato de 10 singles por 1 ano pela 2-tone e 5 albuns dos Specials. A Chrysalis então gravou o single “Gangsters” (música baseada no clássico “Al Capone” de Prince Buster) e distribuiu ao lendário radialista John Peel e depois de uma turnê de 8 semanas pela Inglaterra, a banda chegava à 6ª posição nas paradas inglesas, se apresentando até no “Top of the Pops”. A 2-tone continuou crescendo, também assinando com bandas como “The Selecter” e “Madness”

The Specials

A banda então passa a figurar em festivais de música europeus, roubando a cena de bandas como The Police e The Cure. Em 79, a banda lança o single “A message to you Rudy”, clássico de Dandy Livingstone, com a participação de Rico Rodriguez, um dos maiores nomes do SKA de todos os tempos, junto com a composicão própria “Nite Klub”. Alguns meses depois lançam o album auto-entitulado, que é na minha opinião, o melhor album da banda. O disco chegou ao posto 7 de mais vendido na Inglaterra, consolidando a banda como um fenômeno musical. No mesmo ano aconteceu o primeiro “Two-Tone Tour” com os Specials, Selecter e Madness.

A tour foi um estrondoso sucesso, é claro, porém marcado por incidentes envolvendo o National Front que procurava recrutar pessoas do público para suas atividades de cunho nacionalista. Uma tremenda contradição, tendo-se em vista que o a banda promovia o intercâmbio cultural UK-Jamaica, assim como o selo que defendia a tolerância racial (o preto e o branco). A banda sempre deixou claro seu repúdio por tais correntes ideológicas e o apoio à cultura mod e tradicional skinhead. A banda lançou ainda diversos albuns, como o “More Specials” e o “Today’s Specials” (album repleto de versões muito interessantes) que são altamente recomendáveis. E alguns nem tanto… Mas com certeza, uma das maiores bandas do gênero e tê-los de volta em 2009 promete novos lançamentos e quem sabe uma turnê pelo Brasil (por favor!!!!!!!!!!)

Os produtores da banda icone do ska 2tone, The Specials, anunciaram hoje o retorno dos ingleses aos palcos em 2009.

O Specials emplacou varios hits em sua carreira, com regravações como Monkey Man e A Massege To You Rudy e com musicas proprias como Gangsters e Ghost Town influênciou uma lista extensa de artistas que vão de Rancid a Lilly Allen.

Agora quase 20 anos após o fim do grupo em 1981 a banda volta com sua formação clássica, isso mesmo, com Terry Hall e Neville Staple’s. Syndicate is proving to be Vans’ finest invention since the core classics, in my opinion. Hooking up with skate icons and upcoming designers and applying top spec materials and finishes to the classic Vans silhouettes has seen the range go from strength to strength in recent years. I wasn’t hooked until the Japanese label W)Taps‘ first collab in 2006 (the authentics from the 003 Syndicate range in particular). Since then, the association with Tet and crew has built Syndicate’s reputation among hypebeasts and heads alike.

This year however, the W)Taps x Syndicate collaboration blew my mind, and even though it’s been out for ages I wanted to write about it here, now I’ve started a blog for such things.

Where previously collaborators have picked a Vans shoe and added their own artistic interpretations, by way of graphics or new material applications, this year Vans invited W)Taps to create three brand new models – the Rudeez, the Greaserz and the Bash.

What I love about the collection is the unique and ambitious concept behind it. It’s clear to me that W)Taps’ inspiration for this collection is the United States of America. W)Taps have picked three of the most culturally influential moments in 20th century American history and created shoes for Vans that epitomise those moments. The Vans brand is as unquestionably American as the SoCal location which gave birth to the company, and both are inseperable in the public consciousness as the founders, the origins, of skate culture. Vans = USA. W)Taps have registered this association as their inspiration, and taken it to the max.

In chronological order, then. The Rudeez are based on the two-tone brogues or wing-tip shoes associated with mobsters in the prohibition era – calling to mind films like Some Like It Hot and Bugsy Malone.

The Greaserz are inspired by Chuck Taylor-style baseball / basketball shoes popular in the 1950s, and are indelibly associated with the birth of the American teenager and rock’n'roll. Again, these were made culturally significant in American visual culture, in this case by James Dean and of course Grease.

Finally, the Bash, (an abbreviation for BAsketball SHoe), take their shape from the Air Jordan III and the late 1980s/early 1990s heyday of African-American crossover influence on mainstream American sport and culture, epitomised perhaps by Spike Lee and Michael Jordan.

I’m from Britain and I can see how these shoes could only have been dreamed up by someone who was not American. Prohibition and mobsterism in the 1920s, the birth of the American teen in the 1950s and the mass appeal of African-American culture which came to dominate the mainstream MTV generation in the 1990s are three key moments in the history of America and its material culture. We in the other countries of the world love to hate America’s cultural imperialism most of the time, but we remain fond of many of its legacies.

What’s amazing about the collection though is not just that the concept behind the collection is so ambitious and so well-conceived, but how W)Taps have managed to fuse Vans’ own history to each shoe in different ways.

Firstly, let’s look at the Greaserz and the Bash. Both feature the slogan RISE ABOVE embossed or embroidered on the shoe. RISE ABOVE is a W)Taps slogan, but it’s worth remembering where it comes from – the Black Flag song of the same name. East or west coast, the shoe of choice in the ’80s punk/hardcore scene in the US was Vans, normally the sk8-hi or old skool. You can glimpse Henry Rollins in sk8-his in this video of Black Flag performing Rise Above, though the best picture of him in Vans is here.The photography of Edward Colver also documents Vans’ omnipresence in the Californian punk scene.

The Greaserz also feature an extra touch which brings them full circle back to Japan. This is my moment of wankery so please bear with me. The rubber toe cap features an unusual curlicue design which I think is reminiscent of the waves on Hokusai’s Great Wave of Kanagawa.

Hokusai’s work is as stereotypically Japanese as the baseball shoe, the two-tone brogue and the Jordan III are stereotypically American. I love how by adding this detail, W)Taps has united the country of inspiration with the place where these cultural monoliths were reinvented. The RISE ABOVE emboss acknowledges Vans’ skate punk legacy which brought both together.

Also taking inspiration from Vans’ dominance in the punk music scene, embossed on the toe of the Rudeez is the motto “Ruder Than You”.

Ruder Than You is the name of an amazing song from the early 1980s by all-girl ska band The Bodysnatchers, and has been a staple of my DJ set for over 5 years. Listen to it here.

It was released on 2 Tone records of Coventry, England as the b-side to the Bodysnatchers’ biggest hit People Do Rocksteady. While I don’t believe Vans ever adorned the feet of 2 Tone artists during their heydey, 2 Tone/ska and Vans share a common motif by which both can be immediately recognised – black and white checkerboard. The Rudeez’ heel tab is a tiny checkerboard patch, another playful allusion to the variety of inspirations behind this design. The association between two-tone brogues and 2 Tone ska is a charming and obtuse reference to yet another subculture to which Vans has allied itself.

W)Taps has set the bar high, both in concept and in execution, for future Vans Syndicate collaborations and I look forward to seeing who is going to step up to the mark.

Az 1998-as évben megalakult a magyar ska talán egyik legnagyobb arculata a tatai CsizmáSKAndúr! A zenekar elődje a Csibészek voltak amiben két akusztikusz gitár volt és a számaik jó részt az bulikról és az alkoholról szólt és persze a rendőr szeretettről. Az első albumuk ‘99-be jött ki Bulizik a SKA maffia amire sokunk lábába újra éledt a skanking görcs! A nagy sikerű berobbanás után jött a másik nagy forduló a Sziget Fesztivál színeibe. A banda második albuma 2001-be jött ki Viva La Ska lett amin megtalálható a (s)Kandúr Indoló ami elmaradhatatlan kelléke a Skandúr koncerteken. A tagcserék sem került el a bandát , íme a teljes Kandúr zenészlista: Lipi, Marci, Mosi(R.I.P.), Ati, Zsolti, Betty, Janólaci, Tivadar, Béla, Jojó. A CsizmáSKAndúr testvére zenekara a tiszavasvári Kókler volt akivel kiadtak egy közös lemezt Juhászképző címen. De mint minden jónak a Skandúrnak is vége lett 2004-be mivel mindenkinek más volt az elképzelése. Lipi ment a PASO-ba. Ati és Marci pedig megalapította a SKA-Heccet ami 4 év zenélés után feloszlott… A 2008. év váratlan fordulatot hozott a Skandúrt gyászolóknak mivel februárba a CsizmáSKAndúr a PASO-val és a fehérvári Escape-pel újra beindult az A38-on! ÉS IGEN ÚJRA BULIZIK A SKA MAFFIA!!!!!!!!

A Pannonia Allstars Ska Orchestra 2003. kora tavaszán alakult azzal a kimondott szándékkal, hogy a Jamaikáról származó ska stílus, itthon még nem nagyon ismert, tradicionálisabb vonalát megismertesse a hazai közönséggel. Az orchestra az ország különböző tájairól származó ismert underground zenekarokból toborozta tagjait (CsizmáSKAndúr, MeSKAlin, Kevés, The Deadbeats, Böiler, Kabinet Rt., Csalez Lopez, stb.), s megalakulása után szinte azonnal folyamatos koncertezésbe, koncertszervezésbe kezdett.
Ma már a budapesti klubélet egyik legsikeresebb és legelismertebb zenekaraként sorra adják teltházas bulijaikat, miközben egymás után hívják meg Magyarországra a nemzetközi ska-élet legjobb előadóit (Rotterdam Ska-Jazz Foundation, Dr. Ring Ding, The Slackers, New York Ska Jazz Ensemble, The Toasters, Mr.T-Bone, Victor Rice, King Django, Bad Manners, stb.), feltéve ezzel hazánkat a “nemzetközi ska-térképre”.
A PASO zenéje érdekes keveréke a tradicionális ska-nak, a reggae-nek és a 2tone-nak, de természetesen egyéb zenei hatások is felfedezhetők benne a jazztől kezdve a dubig. Szövegviláguk is vegyes, hiszen a viccesebb, könnyedebb témájúak mellett megtalálhatóak társadalomkritikus, az agressziót és a mindenfajta gyűlöletet elítélő darabok is.
