Maryland got the win they needed to get in order to be considered a serious bubble team.  Alex Len and company was able to hold off No. 2 Duke’s late comeback attempt and it ended with a court storming in college park.

Len proved he was one of the nations top big men on both offense and defense throughout the entire night.  The 7 foot center finally had his breakout game that will give him some recognition as one the best big men in the game.  He doesn’t block 10 shots or grab 10 rebounds, but he affects the game in so many ways that it makes up for his lack of rebounds and blocked shots he should have with his size.

On defense, he held one of the best players in the country, Mason Plumlee, to his season low, four points.  The presence of a seven footer was just to much for Plumlee to handle.  He was unable to get off any hook shots due to Len’s size and he couldn’t get around the length of him to get an open look.  Len was just to much for Plumlee to handle and the absence of Ryan Kelly definitely hurt Plumlee because it allowed Len to mainly guard Plumlee with help.

The 7 footer was also affective on the other side of the court.  He was 6-8 from the field and was extremely efficient in the paint.  He was able to draw fouls and get to the line.  He was 7-8 from the charity strike and created a huge match-up problem for Plumlee who ended up fouling out late.

Len also grabbed nine rebounds and block three shots in his breakout performance.

The play of Len allowed for Maryland to get the win they needed if they want to make the tournament and if Len continues to play like this, watch out for the Terps.

HBO’s award-winning “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel” will spotlight UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey ahead of next month’s UFC 157 headliner.

HBO’s sports newsmagazine show will air a feature on the 25-year-old fighter on Feb. 19 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Four days later, Rousey (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) becomes the UFC’s first female fighter and headliner when she meets title challenger Liz Carmouche (7-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) on pay-per-view at UFC 157, which takes place Feb. 23 at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

It’s the latest mainstream-media appearance for Rousey, a Olympic medalist who’s quickly become the most prominent female fighter in MMA. The “Real Sports” feature is expected to focus heavily on the quick rise that’s been aided by her good looks and fan/media interaction.

“I probably get more attention fighting because of how I look, but if I didn’t how to fight and just looked the way I do, no one would know who I am,” she said in a preview clip of the episode.

Ronda Rousey is the new Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion.  She has finished all of her opponents by arm bar.

“Real Sports” debuted in 1995 and is currently in its 19th season. It’s one of the most critically acclaimed programs of its genre and has won numerous awards for its investigative and enterprise reporting.

Curators at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame should watch Steve Nash closely in the coming weeks.

If recent trends persist, they may have to make the following addendum to his biographical blurb:

Switched to shooting guard halfway through the 2012-13 season to help save one of the most disappointing teams in NBA history.

In this most surreal Lakers season, the top point guard of his generation suddenly deferring ballhandling duties to Kobe Bryant has been the oddest twist.

“The roles are all kind of upside down,” Bryant said Monday.

Nash was unrecognizable even to Lakers Coach Mike D’Antoni, who had watched him win a pair of most-valuable-player awards in Phoenix, after the 17-year veteran scored 17 points to go with only five assists Sunday against Oklahoma City.

“What he just did,” D’Antoni said, “he’s not.”

Well, he’s certainly headed in that direction.

Over the Lakers’ last two games, Nash combined for more than three times as many shots (22) as assists (seven) while averaging 16 points per game. Meanwhile, Bryant averaged 14 assists and only 11 shots, including zero three-point attempts, in those games.

The only figure that mattered to Nash was 2-0, his team’s record in that span.

“I want to do whatever I can to help this team,” he said, painfully aware that the Lakers (19-25) still have plenty of room for improvement.

That means the days of double-digit assists could be numbered for a player who has led the league in that category six times in the last eight seasons.

Not that Nash necessarily has to choose between pick-and-rolls and picking apart defenses with his shooting. He can do both.

“He’s just going to play basketball,” said former New York and Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy, who worked the Lakers-Thunder game as an analyst for ABC. “He’s going to shoot if he’s open and pass if he’s covered and try to make the right play. Nash has a unique perspective. I think he’s willing to do anything it takes to try to help them win.”

Some might wonder why Nash didn’t take a shoot-first approach earlier this season considering his career accuracy of 49.1%, including 42.8% from beyond the three-point line.

“He’s one of the greatest shooters of all time,” Bryant said. “He’s a no-leave guy. If they do leave him, God bless them.”

The Lakers convened for training camp in October with what appeared to be clearly defined roles for their superstar guards. Bryant would be the primary scorer and Nash the top facilitator.

It has taken a few months and more than a few losses for them to realize that those job descriptions required some tweaking.

“It’s not going to be the same as it was in Phoenix for me,” said Nash, who turns 39 next week. “It’s going to be different and I’ve got to accept and embrace that and try to help any way I can.”

Bryant can relate to old ways being gone with the recent wins. The league’s onetime leading scorer has dipped to No. 3 in points per game (28.7) behind Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant (29.6) and New York’s Carmelo Anthony (29.4) while his assists have soared.

The MVP award will be handed out Feb. 2 during a two-hour televised special on CBS, but Adrian Peterson of the Vikings says he already knows the winner.

“I’m going to win it, I will get it,” he said Saturday at Aloha Stadium, site of Sunday’s Pro Bowl, according to the Denver Post’s Mark Kiszla.

His chief competition for the award, Peyton Manning of the Broncos, had zinged Peterson earlier at a Pro Bowl roast.

“Everyone should play like Adrian Peterson,” Manning reportedly said. “The guy does everything full speed. The Pro Bowl. Promoting himself for MVP.”

Peterson took the ribbing in stride, Kiszla reported.

“I thought it was funny, man,” Peterson said. “Manning is always pulling somebody’s chain. This time, he got me. That’s just the way he is. And I have a ton of respect for him.”

After tearing the ACL and MCL in his left knee on Dec. 24, 2011, Peterson led the league with 2,097 rushing yards, lifting Minnesota to a 10-6 record and a playoff berth. He ran for 12 touchdowns and averaged 6.0 yards per carry.

Manning, coming back from multiple neck surgeries, threw for 4,659 yards and 37 touchdowns with 11 interceptions while compiling the league’s second-best passer rating (105.8). He led Denver to a 13-3 record and the AFC’s top playoff seed.

The award is voted on by a nationwide panel of 50 NFL reporters. The Associated Press tabulates the votes.

After last January’s heart-wrenching defeat in the AFC Championship game at Gillette Stadium to the New England Patriots, Ray Lewis stood in front of his teammates in the Ravens’ locker room and vowed to them that they would be back in this exact same spot again.

Nearly one year later, they stood together in celebration, in that same locker room as a team with one mission. One by one clutching the Lamar Hunt trophy, presented to the winner of the AFC Championship Game, they could say that they were, on this January night the best in the AFC.

The Baltimore Ravens defeated the New England Patriots, 28-13 to win the AFC Championship and advance to their second Super Bowl appearance in franchise history. Just as they were in their 2000 season run, the Ravens were a #4 seed, hungry for the opportunity and determined to prove all detractors wrong.

For the third time since last January’s defeat, Joe Flacco outplayed future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady as the Ravens took advantage of three New England turnovers, paving the way to victory. The Ravens (13-6) gained only 130 yards total in the first half, but quickly got things going in the 2nd half as Flacco led the offense to scoring drives of 72 and 63 yards respectively.

The hot teams going into the playoffs usually make the most noise and this year is no different. The Ravens were hot at the right time and will now face Jim Harbaugh’s San Francisco 49ers in the Big Easy, February 3rd.

Quarterback: A

This was Joe Flacco’s game to make big plays and win and he silenced a lot of his critics. Flacco survived dropped passes by Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta early, then bounced back from some missed opportunities down field to have an outstanding performance when it mattered most.

He has truly stepped into his own and it showed in the 2nd half of the game. After throwing for just 81 yards in the first half, Flacco went 15-for-24 for 159 yards and three touchdowns in the 2nd half.

Perhaps the Ravens best drive of the game was the one they needed the most. Flacco led them on a 10 play, 87 yard scoring drive midway through the 3rd quarter where he completed six of nine passes and three of those going for first downs, eventually leading to a Dennis Pitta 5-yard score. Jim Caldwell started to mix things up, calling for throws on first down which gave the offense some life that they didn’t have in the 1st half.

Flacco’s other two touchdowns went to Anquan Boldin in the 4th quarter to seal the victory. It didn’t matter that wind was a factor, Flacco has a strong enough arm to cut through it and that showed delivering crisp throws to his targets. The Patriots tried to take away his ability to throw to the outside but he overcame that. He was excellent over the middle where he threw some of his best passes of the game. He tossed the ball perfectly to Boldin for the first touchdown these two hooked up on, allowing Boldin to use his strength to muscle the ball away from two defenders.

The 2nd touchdown to Boldin was beautiful. Flacco saw the mismatch with Patriots corner back Marquice Cole giving chase and tossed a back shoulder throw into the endzone where only Boldin could go and get it.

Flacco has now thrown eight touchdowns to zero interceptions in the playoffs. He’s been that good. The Ravens have a Super Bowl quarterback in Joe Flacco.

Running Backs: B

The running game was slowed by the Patriots defense, but was still effective enough within the game plan to help the offense out. Ray Rice got involved in the passing game to help the cause, catching a screen pass on 2nd-and-10 at midfield, cutting back across the field and getting 15 yards to keep the driving going midway through the 3rd quarter. Rice finished with 48 yards rushing and a two-yard touchdown where Rice bounced the run out to the left with an amazing cut and evaded two tacklers on his way to the end zone.

Bernard Pierce is the great change-of-pace back we’ve seen for weeks now, finishing with 52 yards rushing on nine carries but he made the most of the carries he received. Pierce did a nice job catching the football too when the Ravens needed it. Flacco found him in the flat as Pierce shook Kyle Arrington’s tackle to pick up a first down with about 12 minutes to play in the 2nd quarter.

Pierce had two nice runs late in the 3rd quarter that showcased his downhill running style and the dynamic he brings to the table when on the field. On a 3rd-and-2 from the Patriots 36, Pierce ran a draw that he bounced outside to the right, breaking an arm tackle two yards behind the line of scrimmage by Rob Ninkovich, then powered through another tackle using his acceleration to gain 11 yards on the play.

The next carry was another draw, but on this run carried two Patriot defenders with him, picking up a healthy six yards on 1st down.

The unit didn’t put up big numbers, but solid enough because it was the Joe Flacco show.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends: B+

In the 1st half, Ravens receivers were not getting much separation from the defenders. Patriots corner Aqib Talib was effective early keeping Torrey Smith in check but once he left the game with a thigh injury, Jim Caldwell and Joe Flacco took advantage of the opportunity.

Anquan Boldin was a man among boys in this game. He out-muscled two defenders for his first touchdown and then beat a safety in the slot for his 2nd touchdown. Boldin added 60 yards on five catches.

Torrey Smith really got going in the 2nd half with some great catches, but his longest went for 25 yards in the 2nd quarter as Flacco threw to him on a play-action pass. Smith went high into the air to get it at its highest point where no defender could get to. He ran some really solid routes in this game. The in-cuts were ran to perfection.

Both Smith and Dennis Pitta worked the middle of the field extremely well for Flacco. Flacco did a nice job of scanning the field and knowing Pitta was the safety valve in the middle as the Patriots tried to close off the Ravens to the outside. Pitta had five catches for 55 yards and a touchdown. The touchdown came one play after Pitta was leveled by Jerod Mayo but somehow hung onto the football.

Offensive Line: A

The line was outstanding blocking Joe Flacco in the game. The line change has really catapulted this team to where they currently are. Flacco was sacked twice but both of those sacks were coverage sacks.

Neutralizing Vince Wilfork was important and the Ravens used tandems to keep him at bay. Bryant McKinnie and Kelechi Osemele worked well together as did Marshal Yanda and Michael Oher. Matt Birk played well when the Patriots went to four-down lineman looks because he could help to bunch to either guard’s side.

Marshal Yanda pulls to his left a lot because he’s an extremely athletic and hard-nosed lineman. He did that quite often on runs to the left and middle. They did a nice job of putting the Patriots lineman on their heels.

Defensive Line: B-

The Ravens combated the Patriots no-huddle offense with a steady rotation of players and they matched the tempo well. Ma’ake Kemoeatu recorded five tackles and Haloti Ngata had four. One of Ngata’s tackles was helping to chase Wes Welker down on a short pass in the 4th quarter with Cary Williams.

The line prevented Tom Brady from putting up the big plays with their ability to get pressure near him. They didn’t record a sack on Brady but they made him move around in the pocket not allowing to get his feet set and throw the football in his specific timing routes.

Art Jones won’t have many numbers show up in the stat book, but he may have played the best out of all the defensive lineman. He was a constant near Tom Brady and recovered a fumble on the huge hit from Bernard Pollard to Stevan Ridley in the 4th quarter. Pernell McPhee had two passes defended, one that was batted into the air and picked off by Dannell Ellerbe. McPhee did a nice job of timing Brady’s throws to get his hands up to bat away the football.

The defensive line completely wore down the Patriots offensive line and it showed late in the 4th quarter.

Linebackers: B-

Ray Lewis finished the game with 14 tackles but the Patriots used right guard Dan Connolly and at times center Ryan Wendell as spies to locate and block him one on one. Ray played a lot of coverage down field where most of his tackles came from. Regardless, Ray’s play since his return from injury has been astounding.

His fresh legs have helped alongside Dannell Ellerbe who had a real solid game. Ellerbe played well and showed good closing speed as he patrolled the middle of the field, something the Patriots tried to take advantage of. Ellerbe finished with five tackles and a pass defended.

Terrell Suggs played a total game in this one, but got stronger in the 2nd half. He finished with seven total tackles and gave Patriots left tackle Nate Solder problems all afternoon long. Paul Kruger had trouble with right tackle Sebastian Vollmer most of the day, he couldn’t really get around him and got pushed back.

Secondary: B-

The Patriots used a lot of short screens and quick slants to try and beat the Ravens but didn’t allow anything over the top. The secondary played solid overall against Tom Brady.

Corey Graham finished with 11 total tackles and Cary Williams had six tackles in addition to the final interception of the game with 1:06 left in the 4th quarter. Graham and Chykie Brown had a mix up in communication that allowed Wes Welker to score a touchdown that gave the Patriots a 10-7 lead in the 2nd quarter. Graham signaled to Brown to watch for the crossing route and to stay home, instead, he went with his man leaving Welker open for the score.

Brown had a bit of a tough game, missing at least two tackles that I could count and only recorded one tackle in the game.

Bernard Pollard made his presence felt in this one, walloping running back Stevan Ridley and causing him to fumble early in the 4th quarter as he finished with nine tackles and a pass defended.

Special Teams: B+

Special teams played much better than last week but still gave up a little too much to Wes Welker on punt returns than they would have liked. It ultimately didn’t hurt the Ravens even with the Patriots having good field position. The Ravens played to their assignments in the kick return game and the Patriots never got that going.

On the opposite side, the Patriots kept Jacoby Jones relatively quiet in this game as they bottled his running lane quickly. He also didn’t look extremely decisive at times with where he wanted to run with the football.

Sam Koch had seven punts, averaging 44.7 yards per punt with just one landing inside the 20 but that was because the Ravens were backed up near their own end zone for most of the first half.

Coaching: A

Outstanding job by Jim Caldwell to make some small changes that had a big impact on the play in the 2nd half. The Ravens weren’t throwing the ball on 1st down much in the 1st half of play, and they were conservative, but they mixed up the play calling starting in the 3rd quarter to get the Pats defense off-balance. They used some more shotgun formations to take advantage of Flacco’s strong arm. In the redzone, the Ravens were outstanding. Four possessions, four touchdowns.

Dean Pees drew up a solid game plan. The defense didn’t record a sack on Brady, but they were able to move the pocket and get Brady out of his comfort zone. Defensively, the Ravens weren’t phased by the gimmick-type things the Patriots did on offense. They gave up a lot of yards, but did not allow the Patriots to beat them with the big play. They stayed with their assignments and were focused. An outstanding job of being coached up on all sides.

Final Take

The Baltimore Ravens will travel to New Orleans to play the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII. Let that sink in for just a moment. The Ravens are amazing in their playoff history. According to our good friends at Russell Street Report, the Ravens are now (13-7) all-time in playoff games and their .650 winning percentage is now the highest among any NFL team, edging out the New York Giants (.645).

This team looked to be in a dire situation in mid-December. They had just lost badly at home to Denver, fired offensive coordinator Cam Cameron days before that game and were transitioning in a new offensive line. It would have been easy for this team to pack it up and just quit but they never did and that’s what has them 60 minutes away from winning their 2nd Super Bowl title. They dominated the Patriots in the 2nd half and deserve to be playing for the Super Bowl.

Hard to find someone now with anything bad to say about Joe Flacco. The guy went out and beat Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning and then Tom Brady in the playoffs and is the signal caller in the Ravens second appearance in the Super Bowl on February 3rd.

Anquan Boldin may have said it best as he told CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz, “Its not often you get this opportunity twice. We left this stadium last year with a bad taste in our mouths. We relish this chance.”

They relished the opportunity and now the Harbaugh brothers take their respective teams to Super Bowl XLVII. What a game it will be.

Ray Lewis, Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens lived up to their team of destiny image on a field where their 2011 season ended painfully. Baltimore coach John Harbaugh is headed to a Super Bowl matchup with his brother. And Lewis can hold his retirement party in New Orleans.

Flacco threw for 240 yards and three touchdowns Sunday as the Ravens, who struggled mightily at the end of the season, beat the New England Patriots 28-13 Sunday in the AFC Championship Game.

The Ravens, Super Bowl champs in their first and only previous trip to the championship in the 2000 season, will play for NFC champion San Francisco 49ers, coached by John Harbaugh’s brother, Jim.

Lewis, who has announced he will retire after 17 NFL seasons at age 37, missed the last 10 games of the regular season with a torn triceps in his right arm. But he’s returned to the playoffs to inspire a Baltimore defense that held Patriots star quarterback Tom Brady to one touchdown pass with two interceptions. New England had never lost an AFC title game at home.

Last season, the Patriots edged the Ravens 23-20 here in the AFC Championship Game. In the final seconds, a potential winning touchdown pass to Lee Evans was stripped away in the end zone and Billy Cundiff missed a potential game-tying 32-yard field goal for Baltimore.

Pauline Friedman Phillips, who as Abigail Van Buren — “Dear Abby” — for more than 40 years dispensed advice to newspaper readers worldwide on everything from snoring spouses to living wills, has died. She was 94.

Phillips died Wednesday in Minneapolis after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, according to a statement from Universal Uclick syndicate.

The youngest of four daughters of Russian immigrants, Pauline Esther Friedman and her identical twin, Esther Pauline, who became advice columnist Ann Landers, were born in Sioux City, Iowa, on July 4, 1918. Phillips once said that as children, “We thought all those firecrackers and skyrockets were just for us.”\

Perhaps those pyrotechnics were a harbinger of things to come for the vivacious, popular Friedman twins — “Popo” and “Eppie” — who were destined to become two of the most famous and influential women of their generation.

For 71 years, she was married to Morton B. Phillips, scion of the National Pressure Cooker Co. (Presto). From an office in their Beverly Hills home, she continued to edit the column into her 80s, although in later years daughter Jeanne Phillips  took over much of the writing.

“I started out editing her,” Jeanne Phillips said in 1999, “and now she edits me.” She plans to “continue the good work my mother started as long as I’m able. It provides a service people absolutely need.”

The improbable saga of “Dear Abby” began in 1955 when Phillips was an affluent homemaker in Hillsborough, Calif., with time on her hands, doing volunteer work and playing mah-jongg. Her twin, who’d just been hired by the Chicago Sun-Times Syndicate to take over the Ann Landers column, began forwarding some of her letters to her for replies.

Always extremely close, the sisters were thrilled to be collaborating on an advice column.

Phillips soon started her own advice column for the San Francisco Chronicle.

Her twin sister died in 2002.

British model Poppy Delevingne has today been announced as the new face of fashion brand Vero Moda.

The fashion house released its new spring/summer campaign with Poppy starring at the centre.

The 26-year-old London-based model and actress showcases the latest looks from the Danish label brand, with plenty of monochrome prints, feminine florals and denim.

Juxtaposition: The campaign was shot in a dramatic location with stark lines to contrast with the soft textures in the collection

‘I’m a spontaneous dresser,’ the 5ft 10in model said in a behind-the-scenes film shot on location. ‘There’s no method to the madness. I wake up and I decide what to wear on the spot.’

Selecting a few favourite items from the s/s13 collection, Poppy said of a khaki parka she would ‘wear and wear it all spring’, some floral skinny jeans would be perfect for a ‘wild night out’ and a transparent black and white stripe blouse was ‘very French.’

Of the appointment of the successful model, who also starred in Matthew Williamson’s recent 15 year anniversary celebration campaign, a Vero Moda spokesman said: ‘Poppy Delevingne adds lightness and femininity to the images, without ever losing her edge.

‘Graphic and minimalist locations were chosen for the shoot to create an eye-catching reflection of Poppy’s fresh look and the more stringent lines of the location.’

The brand said their spring collection would be a work of contrasts, with monochrome prints acting as the perfect foil for feminine florals, soft textiles and graphic two-piece sets.

The brand’s signature pieces – high waisted skinny jeans and featherlight chiffon tops – are also big business for the new season.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta expressed concern on Monday about mounting tensions between Beijing and Tokyo over a disputed island group, urging “calm and restraint on all sides” as anti-Japanese protests flared in China for another day.

“It is in everybody’s interest – it is in everybody’s interest – for Japan and China to maintain good relations and to find a way to avoid further escalation,” Panetta told a news conference after meetings with the Japanese foreign and defense ministers.

Panetta’s remarks came during a weeklong trip to Asia that includes stops in Beijing and Qingdao, home of the Chinese navy’s North Sea fleet.

The U.S. defense secretary, who arrived in China late on Monday, will meet with Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie and Vice President Xi Jinping, who is due to take over as president next spring.

Panetta’s visit is aimed at developing a closer military relationship with China while also working to deepen U.S. defense ties with its longtime treaty allies as part of a shift in U.S. strategic focus to the Asia-Pacific region.

As part of that effort, Panetta and Japanese Defense Minister Satoshi Morimoto announced on Monday the two countries have agreed to locate a second missile defense radar system on Japanese territory to protect against a growing North Korean ballistic missile threat.

“(The radar) will enhance the alliance’s ability to defend Japan, our forward deployed forces and the U.S. homeland from a ballistic missile threat posed by North Korea,” Panetta said.

An X-band missile defense radar is already in place at the Shariki base in Japan, and many U.S. warships are equipped with the radar as part of the Aegis weapons system. But the two countries agreed to begin evaluating sites for a second land-based system.

“More is better,” a U.S. defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said in explaining the decision.

“This deployment will be a force multiplier for the United States and our allies,” the official added, saying it would enable the United States to spread out its ships to better track the missile threat.

The official insisted the system was not aimed at China, but rather was “focused on addressing the growing North Korean missile threat” to the United States and its allies.

The missile defense issue illustrates the balancing act Panetta faces during his visit to the Asia-Pacific region.

He is working to build up the military capabilities of U.S. allies as part of the U.S. strategic shift while trying to reassure Beijing that Washington does not aim to thwart China’s emergence as a global power.

On the islands dispute, Panetta said Washington stood by its mutual defense obligations under the U.S.-Japan security treaty, but he also pressed for Japan and China to take constructive steps to resolve the dispute peacefully.

China and Japan both claim the islands, called Senkaku by Tokyo and Diaoyu by China, which are located in waters thought to be rich in natural gas.

The protests across China were triggered by a Japanese government decision last week to purchase the islands from a private Japanese owner. Beijing warned that the Japanese move was a provocative violation of its sovereignty.

“Obviously we’re concerned by the demonstrations (in China) and we’re concerned by the conflict that is taking place over the Senkaku islands, and the message that I have tried to convey is a message that we have to urge calm and restraint on all sides,” Panetta told reporters.

Valeria Lukyanova has become an internet sensation in her home country of Russia, claiming on her blog to be the most famed woman on the Russian-language internet.

Her doll-like features, long blonde hair and ‘perfect’ body make her look like a real life Barbie.

In fact, with her tiny waist and large breasts, she bears such a resemblance to the famed plastic doll that cynical web users have been speculating about whether or not she is real.

In a spoof video posted on YouTube an animated version of the model undergoes surgery to enhance her already prominent assets.

The girl checks into a plastic surgeons office. As she lies on an operating table, the ‘surgeon’ uses a hand-held pump to enlarge her breasts, before giving her a face-lift using putty and a chainsaw.

Photoshop? Valeria’s face looks almost like a mask, prompting speculation that she might not be real

Proportions: Valeria’s figure is much like that of a Barbie doll, with a tiny waist and large breasts

Twins: Her bright blue eyes and long blonde hair are almost identical to that of the traditional Barbie doll

Horrified viewers have slammed the model over her looks. One commented: She looks not only ugly, but ridiculous while another wrote: ‘A woman with completely perfect features is a boring woman.’

Others were kinder to the blonde beauty. One asked: ‘Isn’t unhealthy obsession on looking like a Barbie doll a part of her identity though?’

But the big question remains unanswered: Is Valeria real or is this an elaborate Photoshop hoax?
More ‘normal’ photos on her Facebook page of the 21-year-old wearing far less make-up suggest she does exists.

Anna Chapman has taken off her clothes for Maxim pictures, inked her own TV show “Mysteries of the World, with Anna Chapman”, secured her own Apple iPhone app, and has become the Paris Hilton of Russian consumer product endorsements.

But now is Chapman making the move from the KGB to the Kremlin? Insiders believe so.

They contend that Chapman’s next goal could be a December bid for the Russian parliament. Chapman has launched a new website that insiders believe is the first step for her December bid for the State Duma. Chapman will reportedly run on Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party ticket.

Chapman recently told news “Before returning to Moscow in July 2010, I aspired to personal harmony and was more concerned with my own happiness.” She adds “But in due course my ideology changed. I came to understand that fulfillment in life comes from helping those around me. The day that I returned I consider to be my second birthday.”

In a recent interview, however, Chapman said she is launching instead a 3D production company. “We have the Winter Olympics and other interesting events coming up that I could cover. I’m going to launch a 3D pilot project soon.”

One of Anna’s most notable lines as a spy was the following: “Okay, tomorrow at 11, I am going to be sitting at one of the benches and she is going to ask me if she saw me in California. I am going to say no, it was the Hamptons. I will take the documents, tell her to sing. I will hold the journal, this is how she will recognize me and I got back and put the postal stamp.”

In July 2010, Anna Chapman and other spies pleaded guilty in a New York courtroom. The deal involved immediate deportation of the 10 individuals in exchange for a reported 4 foreigners held for espionage by Russia. Thereafter, she was transported via Vision Airways from LaGuardia to Vienna.

Russia’s Anna Chapman captured the media world’s attention last year when she was deported from the US, accused of being a spy. The BBC’s Moscow correspondent Steve Rosenberg investigates “Russia’s most glamorous secret agent”.

On the 35th floor of a Moscow skyscraper, an office is filling with smoke.

Suddenly I hear the click-click-click of high heels on parquet floor. And through the mist walks redhead Anna Chapman in a stunning blue dress.

She doesn’t seem in any hurry to evacuate the building.

That’s because the smoke is being pumped into the room by a machine to make her look special.

Russia’s most glamorous secret agent is here to record her weekly TV show. Judging from the scripted lines she’s speaking to camera, it’s clearly not light entertainment.

“Why are some people marked by death, and others escape it?”

“More than a million Russians die every year. Nearly 40,000 in road accidents.”

“This woman returned from Egypt a cripple. A shark ripped off her arm.”

Unsolved mysteries

Anna Chapman’s show is called Secrets of the World. Each week on the Russian channel Ren TV, she sets about explaining the mysteries of our planet.

“The programme’s for everyone,” Anna says in a break. “Everyone is interested in mysteries, because they are secrets, they are unsolved.”

She is less keen, however, to talk about her own secrets. I ask Anna Chapman if she really had been a spy.

“I will never deny and I will never confirm the fact,” she replies coldly.

The Americans had no such doubts on the matter.

Eight months ago, Anna Chapman was one of 10 alleged Russian sleeper agents deported from the United States.

At Vienna airport the agents were exchanged for four people the Russians claimed had been spying for the West.

It was the biggest spy swap since the Cold War. Back in Russia, Ms Chapman and her fellow deportees received medals from President Dmitry Medvedev and heaps of praise from Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Most secret agents, once uncovered, arrested and deported, normally adopt a low profile back home. Not Anna Chapman.

Since returning to Russia, she’s hardly been out of the headlines.

Although I haven’t confirmed this fact, she is surely the first Russian spy to have done a photo shoot for a men’s magazine wearing very little and brandishing a pistol.

As well as being a model, Ms Chapman has also been an investment adviser for a bank, a charity worker and a campaigner for high-speed internet.

She’s also been elected one of the leaders of the youth wing of Mr Putin’s political party.

There are rumours she may even run for parliament this autumn. I ask Ms Chapman if that’s true.

“All I’m going to say is I’m interested in helping other people,” she replies. “That’s all.”

It’s another secret she is keeping well away from the cameras.

3D dreams

Anna Chapman rarely gives interviews, although last December a Russian TV show declared her Woman of the Year and devoted an hour of airtime to her.

In a programme resembling This is Your Life, Ms Chapman sat on a settee as a stream of figures from her past appeared on stage.

Among them, Yegor from Volgograd – her old boyfriend from school. The audience applauded as he gave her a peck on the cheek and a bunch of flowers.

One person who wasn’t there was the man Anna married when she was living in England: Alex Chapman. They divorced after four years of marriage.

Now Anna hosts her own TV show. And she’s got more plans in the world of television.

After an hour’s recording on the set of her programme, Anna Chapman is flagging.

Condoleezza Rice has lived a life of firsts: first black woman to be Secretary of State, first black woman to be national security adviser and the first African-American, first woman and youngest person to be provost of Stanford University.

On Monday, she added another first when she became one of the first two female members admitted to Augusta National Golf Club, the home of the Masters tournament, which has excluded women as members throughout its 80-year history. Surprise lovebirds alert: Canadian rockers Avril Lavigne and Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger are engaged, despite the fact that not many people knew they were even dating. According to People, Lavigne and Kroeger sparked up a romance while they were working together on material for Lavigne’s new album but chose to keep their relationship private.

“A romantic relationship blossomed as they spent time writing together,” a friend of Lavigne’s told the magazine.

Kroeger reportedly popped the question August 8, complete with a 14-carat diamond engagement ring.

“He makes her so happy,” a friend of the Lavigne family told the magazine. “Both of their families could not be more excited.”

Lavigne and Kroeger have yet to comment publicly on their relationship, but the “Girlfriend” singer did re-tweet a message of congrats from Kroeger’s bandmates.

“Congratulations Avril and Chad!” tweeted Nickelback, which includes Ryan Peake, Chad’s brother Mike Kroeger and Daniel Adair.

This will be the second marriage for Lavigne. She was married to Sum 41′s Deryck Whibley for three years before they divorced in 2009. After her highly publicized split with Whibley, Lavigne dated reality star Brody Jenner — they even got tattoos of each other’s names — but the pair ended their relationship early this year. This will be Kroeger’s first marriage.

Music-wise, Lavigne has said her fifth studio album will have a lighter, more fun pop tone and is expected to be released before the end of the year. In addition to the song written and recorded with Kroeger, Lavigne also enlisted the recording talents of hip-hop production duo the Runners and former Evanescence bandmember David Hodges.

The wife of disgraced Chinese political leader Bo Xilai has been charged with the murder of UK businessman Neil Heywood, state news agency Xinhua says.

Gu Kailai and Zhang Xiaojun, employed at Mr Bo’s home, were “recently” prosecuted by a Chinese court, Xinhua said, without giving further details.

Mr Heywood was found dead in a hotel in Chongqing on 15 November 2011.

The apparent murder of Mr Heywood triggered Mr Bo’s downfall in a scandal that has rocked Chinese politics.

Local officials initially said Mr Heywood died of excessive drinking, but the government announced in April it was investigating Mr Bo’s wife in connection with the case.

The two accused have been charged with intentional homicide by the Hefei Municipal Procuratorate (state prosecutor’s office) in the eastern province of Anhui.

Britain welcomed the news, saying it was “glad to see” China is continuing the investigation into Mr Heywood’s death.

Political influence?

The timing of the announcement is significant, as is the fact that Ms Gu is being prosecuted in Anhui, some distance from Chongqing, where the crime allegedly took place, says BBC Chinese.com editor Yuwen Wu.

Legal experts told BBC Chinese that authorities would have had concerns about the political influence Bo Xilai and his family may still exert in Chongqing and whether that would affect a fair trial.

Analysts also say the authorities are keen to resolve the case quickly before China undergoes its politically sensitive once-in-a-decade party leadership change at the Communist Party congress this autumn.

Users of China’s Sina Weibo website – the equivalent of Twitter- were quick to express their shock at the abrupt announcement, but “Gu Kailai” remains a censored keyword.

A number of users criticised the timing of the report, alleging that the authorities wanted to divert attention from recent deadly floods in Beijing.

High-flyer

Investigators have concluded that Ms Gu and her son had conflicts with Mr Heywood over economic interests, and that worries about a possible threat posed by Mr Heywood to her son’s personal security may have led Ms Gu, along with Mr Zhang, to poison Mr Heywood to death, according to Xinhua.

“The facts of the two defendants’ crime are clear, and the evidence is irrefutable and substantial,” said the agency’s report, which was also read out on state television.

The exact nature of Mr Heywood’s role and his relations with the Bo family are unclear, and have been the subject of much speculation inside and outside China. At the very least, there were close business contacts between the Bo family and Mr Heywood.

Mr Bo, the former high-flying leader of the south-western Chinese mega-city of Chongqing, was sacked in March and is under investigation for allegedly flouting Communist Party rules.

He made his name tackling corruption in the sprawling city of Chongqing and had been expected to be elected to an important position during this year’s leadership change.

Mr Bo also implemented a drive to promote China’s communist past, which included public performances of Mao-era songs in Chongqing. There have been claims that his anti-crime drive involved cases of torture.

One of China’s most charismatic politicians, his status as the son of former party elder Bo Yibo made him one of the “princelings” of Chinese politics – a term used to describe the descendants of senior party figures in the early years of communist rule.

His downfall was triggered when his police chief, Wang Lijun, fled to the US consulate, reportedly to seek asylum after falling out with Mr Bo over his investigation into the death of Mr Heywood.

The Xinhua report about Ms Gu’s prosecution made no reference to Mr Bo or any investigation into him.

Earlier this month, French architect Patrick Devillers, who is alleged to have links to Mr Bo and Ms Gu, was arrested in Cambodia before voluntarily flying to China. A Chinese official said he was wanted as a witness.

On Tuesday, he was reported to be in “good shape” after meeting French diplomats earlier in the week.

Donald J. Sobol, author of the popular “Encyclopedia Brown” series of children’s mysteries, has died. He was 87.

Sobol died in Miami from natural causes July 11, with his wife Rose by his side, his son John Sobol told The Associated Press Monday.

Sobol’s series featured amateur sleuth Leroy “Encyclopedia” Brown, who would unravel local mysteries with the help of his encyclopedic knowledge of facts great and small. The books, first published in the early 1960s, became staples in classrooms and libraries nationwide. They were translated into 12 languages and sold millions of copies worldwide.

“Thanks to Donald, generations of children have learned to read and solve mysteries alongside Encyclopedia Brown, one of the most iconic characters in children’s literature,” said Don Weisberg, president of Penguin Young Readers Group, which publishes Sobol’s books.

The Encyclopedia Brown books also featured Brown’s friend and detective partner, the tough and athletic Sally Kimball. John Sobol said his father was ahead of his times in creating a strong female character.

“That was groundbreaking back in 1963 when the series was first published,” Sobol said.

Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the Encyclopedia Brown series. Donald Sobol’s latest Encyclopedia Brown adventure, “Encyclopedia Brown and the Case of the Soccer Scheme,” will be published in October, according to a release from Penguin.

Sobol was a New York City native. He served in the Army Corps of Engineers during WWII and graduated from Oberlin College. He later worked as a copywriter at the New York Sun, where he eventually worked his way up to reporter. His first Encyclopedia Brown book was rejected two dozen times before it was published, his son said.

In 1958, Sobol became a successful syndicated columnist with his “Two Minute Mystery” series before publishing “Encyclopedia Brown Boy Detective” five years later to launch the most popular series of his career. He and his wife moved to Miami in 1961.

The Encyclopedia Brown concept — in which the solutions to the mysteries are shown after the story — came to Sobol while he was researching an article at the New York Public Library, and a clerk mistakenly handed him a game book, with puzzles on one side and the solutions on the other.

Sobol decided to write a mystery series with the same premise. He earned an Edgar Award from the Mystery Writers of America award for the Encyclopedia Brown series.

John Sobol said his father would frequently test out story ideas on his four children. “We would talk about it sitting around dinner,” he said, adding, “My mom also helped inject humor into the stories.”

The series inevitably attracted Hollywood, which tried for decades to adapt the books for the big screen, with Anthony Hopkins, Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn among those interested in the project. But legal disputes over who controls film rights have prevented any feature film from being made.

Sobol’s work never brought him the financial success of blockbusters like the “Harry Potter,” series, his son said, but his father loved hearing from countless librarians and parents about children who hated to read until they picked up an Encyclopedia Brown book.

Sobol authored more than 80 books and wrote on a daily basis to the very end.
