I’ve just finished watching ‘Black Widow Granny?’ online. Betty Neumar is a 76-year-old widow, currently awaiting trial in the United States, charged with soliciting the murder of her fourth husband Harold Gentry, who was shot multiple times by an unknown assailant, in 1986. Harold’s brother, Al Gentry, made efforts for 22 years to have her arrested. He became suspicious of her involvement when he pulled up to his brother’s house following the shooting. He says Neumar met him outside and told him that she had nothing to do with his brother’s death as she had been in Augusta, Georgia. Betty says she is not even sure she spoke to Al on the night in question. Once Neumar was arrested, in 2007, police learned she had been married five times previously and all of the men were deceased. American media seized on the story and have dubbed her ‘The Black Widow’.  Three of her five husbands died from gunshot wounds. Tests were conducted on her fifth husband’s ashes for arsenic poisoning but the tests came back negative. Currently released on a $300,000 (£181,549) bail bond, a trial date has yet to be set. The Reserve Bank has raised its key interest rate, making Australia the first developed nation to reverse the cycle of cuts triggered by the global financial crisis. Analysts say more increases are on the way.

Today’s 25-basis-point rise pushes the central bank’s cash rate to 3.25 per cent in a move that will add $40 to the average monthly payment for a typical $300,000 mortgage if it is passed on by commercial banks. The extra cost may stretch household budgets at a time when unemployment remains on the rise.

All four of the big banks – Commonwealth Bank, Westpac, National Australia Bank and ANZ – said they have placed their variable interest rates under review.

And I fucking missed it. I don’t know what hit the news yesterday (since my laptop is broken) but a shit-ton of people were searching “people of walmart” and every other variation you could find.

Very odd. Either way, we are 30% of the way to 1 Million. A goal that I don’t think I’ll ever see achieved. However, if you guys can come up with someway to get 700,000 hits, I’ll shutter this sumbitch tomorrow.

France has extradited a suspect to Los Angeles to face charges of transporting two rare, stolen violins.

The FBI said 43-year-old Anthony Eugene Notarstefano was returned Friday.

Hundreds of hotel guests were evacuated from a Perth hotel this morning after a fire broke out in the basement.

A FESA spokesman said the fire at the Good Earth Hotel in Adelaide Terrace started just after midnight.

He said about 200 guests were forced outside after smoke began to spread through the hotel’s upper levels.  

Damage has been estimated at $300,000.

ABC radio reports one guest collapsed and was treated for stress.

The arson squad are investigating.

She hasn’t shown up for work very regularly over the last year or so, so when Michelle Obama’s $300,000 job was cut at the University of Chicago Hospitals, it may have been hard to notice the difference.  Crain’s skipped the part about the incoming First Lady, must have been an oversight in their expert analysis of Chicago Business, because we know Crain’s is “Not show business. All business”.

The Tribune announced the layoff without much analysis, but let the cat far enough out of the bag to prompt our Don Rose to question how important Michelle Obama’s job must have been, as it was so easily eliminated.  The New Republic gnashes their dentures at the how a community can be served without Michelle Obama, despite the void of actual labor she has performed while being on the campaign trail.  The comments are much more informative than the article in TNR.

But a bigger question comes to mind:

The Tribune reports that the budget and job cuts—including 15 “senior executive” positions—will not affect medical care.

If they don’t affect medical care, why the hell were they there in the first place? Medical care is the hospital’s mission.

Among those big-money positions is one held until recently by Michelle Obama, who was paid $300,000 yearly for a Southside community outreach program—presumably a useful project. But the hospital said her role will be absorbed by a “longtime executive vice president for strategic affiliations and external affairs.”

So if that work can be folded into another guy’s, why was it separate in the first place?

Un premier bilan des communales

Les élections communales 2008 sont, dans l’ensemble, un bon cru pour le PLR valaisan. Malgré la réduction du nombre de communes (71 au lieu de 76) et d’élus (477 au lieu de 512), notre parti a préservé sa force électorale. Il représente désormais 32 % des sièges dans les exécutifs du Valais romand contre 30 %, il y a 4 ans. De plus, 19 présidences et vice-présidences lui échoient déjà. Le PLR doit transformer l’essai dans les scrutins à venir. Une mention spéciale, entre autres, pour la capitale où il s’agissait aussi de vérifier les effets de l’union des listes radicale et libérale. Et bien, c’est un clair succès, un véritable plébiscite de la base en faveur de ce rapprochement. Pour 6 malheureuses listes, le PLR aurait obtenu un cinquième siège au détriment du PDC (en recul à 44 %), lequel aurait alors perdu sa majorité absolue ! Quant aux résultats individuels, en particulier les 2′989 voix de Gérald Pfefferlé et les 3198 de Marcel Maurer en auront étonné plus d’un. M. Maurer, qui a été logiquement désigné candidat à la présidence par l’ensemble de la famille radicale et libérale, est l’élu qui a obtenu le plus de suffrages d’apport (1163 contre 794 à son futur adversaire conservateur ; soit plus que l’excellent président François Mudry en 2004, lequel avait fait 1057 voix d’apport). De même, sur les 702 listes sans en-têtes de la capitale, Marcel Maurer réalise de loin le meilleur score, avec 410 voix contre 320 à son compétiteur.

Le Valais des 300’000

(…) A la fin de l’année dernière, le Valais comptait une population résidente moyenne, selon l’OFS, de 297’000 habitants, soit à 3′000 du seuil symbolique. Sachant que l’augmentation moyenne annuelle de la population est de 1,3 %, selon l’office des statistiques du canton du Valais, cela représente 320 unités supplémentaires par mois. Les maternités de Sion et de Viège m’ont confirmé que du 1^er au 20 octobre 2008, elles avaient enregistré 91 naissances, pour Sion, et 41, pour Viège. Le trend de l’année dernière est donc maintenu pour 2008. Il faut encore préciser que l’augmentation de la population est due pour la plus grande part à l’excédent migratoire et non à l’excédent naturel (différence entre les naissances et les décès). Sur cette base, il est permis de dire que le Valais a franchi le cap des 300′000 habitants au cours du 10^ème mois de l’année 2008 ! (…)

This is a long post.  I hope that you will read it.  I’ve finally come to terms with who John McCain is and who John McCain has always been.   And tell me, who are today’s men of integrity in the leadership of the Republican party?   Other than Senator Chuck Hagel from Nebraska, I honestly can’t think of one.  

So actually, it’s not just the Christian right catching on, I’m beginning to catch on too.  I have been shaking my head thinking that this isn’t the John McCain I had admired for years.  Well, maybe John McCain was never the man made by the media.   Reality has slapped me in the face seeing how easily we (including me) can be manipulated into accepting the media’s version of a politician’s history.

John McCain first came to Congress in 1982, not long after my father died.  My father was a hardcore Republican, retired from the Army after 32 years and one of the best fathers ever.  He was honest, hard-working, believed in the American system, made us watch all presidential annoucements (sit still, be quiet, and listen ”the president is on”), helped out the neighbors, took time for his kids and he loved my mother dearly.   So I always thought that John McCain was like my dad.  Although I’m a hardcore Democrat – I always thought that if only a guy like McCain would head the Republican ticket . . . maybe . . . ?

My dad loved Barry Goldwater.  Another man that I imagined to be like my father.   You see my father – although a good man was also a bigot.   He had no time for silly topics like homosexuals or civil rights.  People basically needed to fall in line according to his way of thinking.   However, good Republican men like Barry Goldwater provided objective evidence that a good man like my father would also change his bigoted opinions as he gained more facts.   Unfortunately my father died in 1981.   He never said that it was “OK” that I’m a lesbian but before his death I could feel and see the flicker of understanding that was starting to grow.

The photo is is of Sen. Barry Goldwater, on the right, as he poses with his running mate William Miller at the 1964 Republican National Convention in San Francisco.  I was 5 years old.  Miller was one of the prosecuters at the Nuremberg trials. Miller is the only practicing Catholic to have been nominated for national office by the Republican Party.  Mabye McCain picked Sarah Palin because she was baptized a Catholic?  And we thought it was her gender. 

By the mid-1980’s Republican men like Barry Goldwater were getting fed up with the increasing influence of the crazed far-right Christians on the Republican party.   You see my father didn’t have much use for them either.  

Anyway, Goldwater eventually became an outspoken defender of gay rights.  So even though my father didn’t live to make that change – I know that he would have because of men like Barry Goldwater and John McCain.

I’ve been a little shaken by the extreme nature of John McCain’s campaign.  Obviously the man is desperate to be president and that’s why he endangered the country by picking Sarah Palin as his running mate; but in my experience men like Barry Goldwater and my father would have never lowered themselves to this level.

However, when reading a post that I wrote back on September 16 and reading the Times gambling investigation I realized that John McCain was NEVER like Barry Goldwater or my father.  

John McCain has always been a cocky, shoot from the hip, gambling, womanizing, self-centered, power-hungry Republican.  

Today the papers are full of the stories about John McCain’s history of gambling (up to 14 hours a day at times) and his history of working with the casino lobbyists.   Here are a couple of quotes from one of the articles:

“We’ve known for a while of John McCain’s childhood connection to the region, where he lived for a short period when his father was serving a stint here as a Navy submarine commander. But it wasn’t until the results of a New York Times investigation were published earlier this week that we learned the extent of McCain’s involvement with another mainstay of eastern Connecticut culture, our casinos.”

“Of course more troubling than the disclosures in The Times story this week of McCain’s gambling in a Connecticut casino was the suggestion that he used his position as chairman of the Indian Affairs Committee to help lobbyists working to stop a third tribal casino in Connecticut.”

Now the big question is will McCain’s gambling ties hurt him with the Christian right-wingers.  In fact, check out this article from a CBN (Christian Broadcasting Network) blog which describes the new Democratic National Committee’s ad featuring McCain’s gambling.    It’s written by David Brody of The Brody File.  Here is how the article ends:

“The DNC knows that McCain’s so called penchant for gambling can hurt him among some social conservatives. It may not play well with other strongly religious voters as well. Indeed, the last thing McCain needs is another problem with the Evangelical base. In this case, the gambling issue could most likely trump the lobbyist issue. I mean it’s not like he’s playing the lottery or bingo or a quick 25 cents slot machine. This is high stakes gambling we’re talking about. Then you throw in the lobbyist angle and you have a dangerous credibility issue. Will voters buy it and will it stick? Does this bother you?”

Actually, from the dates that I’ve seen, McCain obtained a marriage license to marry Cindy before the divorce was final . . . heaven forbid we talk about that with the family values crowd.

McCain did not sue his wife for divorce until Feb. 19, 1980.   McCain obtained an Arizona marriage license with Cindy on March 6, 1980, while still legally married to his first wife.  The divorce was granted April 2, 1980, and he wed Cindy “My Outfit Cost $300,000″ Hensley in a private ceremony on May 17, 1980.

Friends of the McCains such as Nancy and Ronald Reagan were not happy with what John McCain did to his first wife.  Cleary the Reagans had good reason to feel this way.

Here is what John McCain’s been quoted as saying about meeting Cindy.

She was lovely, intelligent and charming, 17 years my junior but poised and confident. I monopolized her attention the entire time, taking care to prevent anyone else from intruding on our conversation. When it came time to leave the party, I persuaded her to join me for drinks at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. By the evening’s end, I was in love.”

But he WAS MARRIED with small children at home at the time of this romantic encounter.  Shorter version of story:   I was a dirty old man (as I still am) husband and father.  One night I got really horny when I saw this girl almost young enough to be my daughter.  So I immediately asked her to go to a hotel with me.  I thought it was the usual one night stand but when I found out she was rich I decided to dump my wife and kids.

I also don’t get why no one speaks of Cindy McCain’s history as a drug addict stealing from a medical charity.   The woman is RICH and well-connected.   She didn’t have to steal.   The fact that she’s a recovering addict really is no big deal – I mean Sarah Palin’s teenage son is apparently a recovering addict – in the scheme of things. 

BUT CINDY MCCAIN IS A RICH THIEF STEALING FROM A CHARITY. 

Some say that Democrats should not talk about Cindy McCain’s history of drug addiction.   Fine.  Can we talk about having the first admitted thief as First Lady?  

My in-laws go on and on with their FOX News induced claim that Michelle Obama doesn’t love America.

Yet, we know very little about the made-up tranny mess Cindy McCain and her history of drug addiction and stealing from A MEDICAL CHARITY!  In fact, I’m not sure that the in-laws even know about Cindy McCain’s past. 

Guess it all comes down to this . . . if you’re the party of family values you can head your ticket with a guy who left his crippled wife for a trophy millionare tranny mess (also a thieving drug addict) and then top off your ticket with the mother of not only a pregnant teenage daughter but of a recovering addict teenage son . . . and your family values crowd won’t even notice  . . .  

Hey, but if you’re a politician who supports a family like mine (2 moms and a boy) .  .  .  the “family values” folks won’t be able to vote for you.   

All I can say is that McCain and Palin are the best advertisement yet for some form of government other than representational democracy.    

Are Civics/Government classes mandatory in any state’s public educational system?

Australien macht’s vor. Es hat einige massive Probleme, die uns bekannt vorkommen sollten: Ueberalterung und viel zu wenige gut ausgebildete Fachkraefte. Allerdings ist der Loesungsansatz der Labor-Regierung von Kevin Rudd in Melbourne deutlich offensiver. Sie erhoeht die Quote fuer Visa um 30%, auf 300.000, so die Presse. Bei rund 20,5 Millionen Einwohnern, wohlgemerkt.

Die Probleme, die aus dem Fachkraeftemangel erwachsen sind, sind dermassen massiv (zu wenig Piloten, zu wenig Krankenhauspersonal, Wohnungsnot wegen zu wenig Bauarbeitern, um nur drei zu nennen) – und die Arbeitslosigkeit ist sehr niedrig, das muss auch erwaehnt werden -, dass nicht einmal die am weitesten links stehenden Gewerkschaften dagegen sind. Ueberraschend, dass eine Labor-Regierung so schnell den Forderungen der Wirtschaft nachkommt, muesste man meinen – ist es aber auf Grund der gewaltigen Probleme nicht.

Die konservative Regierung unter Ron Howard hat versagt, diese Probleme anzugehen, und jetzt muss umso drastischer reagiert werden. Was spannend ist, ist dass wir in Oesterreich (wenn nicht generell in Europa) noch nicht so weit sind. Noch. Die Bevoelkerung wird immer aelter, Krankenschwestern werden oft aus dem Ausland angeworben. Noch ist es nicht so gravierend, gar keine Frage. Allerdings sind die Symptome erschreckend aehnlich.

Australien reagiert und will, von den 300.000 freien Plaetzen fur Einwanderer, mindestens 31.000 fuer neue Fachkraefte reservieren. Allerdings ist ihre Not schon so gross, dass sie oft auch schon eine halbe Qualifizierung fuer gut genug befinden (muessen). Wir sollten es in Oesterreich nicht soweit kommen lassen. Die Zahlen sind natuerlich veraenderbar, aber der Grundgedanke aus Melbourne ist richtig. Und wenn wir uns aussuchen wollen, wen wir reinlassen, muessen wir es auch fuer hochqualifizierte Arbeitskraefte attraktiv machen, zu kommen.

Was freilich schwer umzusetzen sein wird, mit den blau-orangen Klaeffern und einem aus allen Rohren gegen die boesen “Auslaender, die uns die Arbeitsplaetze wegnehmen” schiessendem Boulevard… Aber sind wir eine Demokratie oder eine Mediakratie?
