I had a thought earlier today.  Being alone again… there’s nobody to tell me, “Mary, that’s a dumb idea.”  Not that John ever quite said it that way or ever treated me like that– I’m a little more blunt.

But at the same time there’s nobody to tell me “Mary, that’s a dumb idea.”

With John it was more the gentle reminders that I needed to get some sleep.  Or “did you feed the horses yet?” (which by the way, I haven’t yet).   Or “we need to remember to…”  Or the “what do you think about…” Or “don’t forget to…”

Confiding in a soul-mate and sharing a partnership together are some of the things I miss the most.  I miss them everyday, but I miss them most when it comes to matters of Nathaniel.  I don’t want to be the person that decides if it is safe for him to get vaccinated for H1N1 of if it is dangerous for him not to get it.  (He has gotten his first shot and is scheduled for dose number two.)   I want to be one of two parents who decides together how to best raise their child.  You know the way it ideally is… in a perfect world.  But, in a perfect world your beloved spouse doesn’t die of cancer at 35…

Everything is now my decision to make- for wrong of for right.  In a way it’s nice to know that there won’t be any conflict in parental matters- it’s my way or the highway.  (Practicing for the teenage years.)  I can do things that I want to do- if I want to go take Nathaniel somewhere, I just do it.  No, “not now… maybe later”… “I’m tired…”  or “I don’t feel like it,”  or “why don’t you just go (aka I’m not interested and don’t want to join you).”  I’m tired of learning things the hard way.  Hoping I’ll be making more right decisions, but I’m fully aware that I’ll make wrong ones too.

All that being said, I think I’m doing mostly okay on my own.  I ask for opinions when I need them and make my own decisions.  I’m pretty good at researching and collecting data.  I’m an adult and quite capable of making my own decisions.  I just wish John was still here to help me make up my mind.

Skrämmande och djupt tragisk barndomsskildring. Bygger på Augusten Burroughs självbiografi eller memoarer eller vad man nu kallar det. Har lagt till den på min önskelista på The Book Depository. Pappan är alkis och mamman psykiskt väldigt skör. Augusten blir som följd av detta mer eller mindre bortadopterad till moderns psykiater och dennes extremt osunda storfamilj. Annette Bening (mamman) är väldigt bra, trasig och Gökboet-neddrogad så att det skär så där skönt i hjärtat. Brian Cox är dunder som den komplett vansinnige Doktor Finch. “This is my masturbatorium.” Viss respekt måste man ändå ha för en kille som har ett dedikerat runkrum… Ja herregud. Vi snackar om en milt sagt långtgående brist på varje tillstymmelse till sunda gränser barn/föräldrar emellan. Handbok i hur man får sina barn att växa upp till seriemördare.

I got this a few months ago when BookCloseouts was having a big scratch-and-dent sale. It looked interesting, and I don’t think I’ve read anything Robin Hood-related since the last time I read The Once and Future King. But that whole thing in the woods with Robin and his merry men made me want to puke with the mushiness hippie-ness of it all, so I was excited to read something that took a more realistic approach.

As a whole, I don’t think it was an utter waste of my time. I enjoyed most of it, and even though some parts really annoyed me, they didn’t annoy me enough to stop reading it. However, looking back I had a lot more problems with it than I had, uh, non-problems, and that’s why I don’t think I’ll be reading the next two books in the series.

It starts off with extremely high action, which is probably why I kept reading it through to the end– the action sequences are very action-y, and I needed a bit of an adrenaline kick after my last book. The middle is more slow but it’s building back up the tension and by the end it’s really exciting again.

So, the best part of the book: the fight sequences.

I also like the whole reboot. Robin Hood in Wales? Cool! I like Wales. I also liked that it had a paranormal/fantasy kind of tint to it; at first I thought it was weird, but then I figured it was like King Arthur or something and then it really worked for me. But then came the problems.

The characters were flat. It was interesting to see how Mr Lawhead changed them from the original versions, especially Robin/Bran, who’s more selfish and lazy and a bit of a player at the beginning. He changes by the end, though he’s still a bit of a coward. But I liked seeing him evolve through the story.

However, the rest of the characters were either bland or so all over the place with their emotions they turned into jesters. It wasn’t unusual for someone to be REALLY FREAKING ANGRY and then two sentences later they’re calm and calculating. Not just one dude, by the way, but almost all the dudes entirely. And not either of those emotions were convincing; it was like watching Plan 9 From Outer Space set in the middle ages. Merian and Bran definitely had the worst conversations: they were utterly unconvincing and Merian turned into a standard fake-strong female heroine trope instead of staying the most convincingly real person in the whole cast. Disappointing.

The writing was, as I said last Thursday, trying too hard to be clever. I said that when it tried to be clever instead of being enjoyable like an in-joke it came off more like “you’re too stupid to figure it out so I’ll explain because I’m so smart” kind of thing. Really annoying, though it didn’t happen too many times. And the writing wasn’t overly horrible, it just wasn’t up to par with things like The Winter King.

The plot itself wasn’t bad. It was pretty good, actually! And like I said, I like the whole reboot-a-myth thing. But the writing and the characters just dragged it down, and the fight sequences weren’t enough to lift it back up. I’m sort of torn, though. I liked it, kinda. And I for sure didn’t hate it. But I feel sort of wishy-washy about it. Ambivalent! That’s what I mean. I’m ambivalent.

If you think you’d like reading a Robin Hood story in a new setting with slightly changed characters and plot, then you might like this. But– I’d get it from the library just in case you don’t.

Il palinsesto “Autunno-Inverno 2009″ vede la partenza di due nuovi appuntamenti su Radio35, la webradio nata nel settembre 2009 che – all’insegna dello slogan “Cult & Trash” – propone i piu’ grandi successi (e insuccessi) della musica italiana ed internazionale dagli anni 60 ad oggi, le nuove proposte, i brani introvabili, gli indimenticabili, le meteore, le sigle dei programmi TV e dei cartoni animati.

“Casa Roberto” e’ il primo dei due nuovi appuntamenti. In una sorta di Blog radiofonico, Roberto apre il microfono e – oltre a commentare i brani in onda dando notizie e curiosita’ sui cantanti – ci porta a casa sua e ci parla di tutto quello che gli accade: la vita “di coppia” col suo gatto Teo, i rapporti con i vicini di casa, il lavoro, il commento agli articoli di attualita’ e alle sue trasmissioni televisive preferite ecc. ecc. Non mancano gli interventi degli ascoltatori con i sondaggi, la lettura delle mail, le dediche, le richieste, i saluti.

Se vi sentite “audio-voyeur” questo e’ il programma giusto per voi, una sorta di “Grande Fratello” radiofonico condito da humour e da quel poco di intelligenza limitata – purtroppo – ai 16 Mega della scheda di memoria situata nel cervelletto di Roberto……

Data la sua natura di Blog radiofonico, il programma non ha un orario fisso di messa in onda. Gli interventi avvengono praticamente tutto il giorno, e a volte anche di notte………

Il secondo appuntamento in partenza su Radio35 ha invece una collocazione oraria ben precisa: ogni martedi’, mercoledi’ e giovedi’ alle 15,40 (in replica alle 22,40) Andrea Bolognese presenta “Single Chart”, la classifica settimanale dei 15 brani piu’ venduti in Italia.

I decided to read The Magicians mostly because everyone’s been peeing their pants with excitement for it, and I thought it’d be a worthwhile read. I like urban fantasy! I like children’s fantasy books! And so I got it out from my library.

I’m not entirely convinced ya’ll should be ruining your underthings for this book.

Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he’s still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the craft of modern sorcery.

He also discovers all the other things people learn in college: friendship, love, sex, booze, and boredom. Something is missing, though. Magic doesn’t bring Quentin the happiness and adventure he dreamed it would. After graduation he and his friends make a stunning discovery: Fillory is real. But the land of Quentin’s fantasies turns out to be much darker and more dangerous than he could have imagined. His childhood dream becomes a nightmare with a shocking truth at its heart.

I think I was expecting The Magicians to be something it’s not– namely, lighthearted– and also I kept trying to read it like a YA book when it’s definitely not a YA book. I think the main plotline (teenager goes to magical school and becomes a wizard) kept tripping me up, because it’s such a YA thing to have in a book. You know? So my own expectations and…lens? colored my reading of The Magicians and that’s probably why I didn’t end up enjoying it as much as I thought I would.

I did enjoy it, sure. Mostly. I liked the whole idea of a magical college, and I liked some of the characters (unfortunately I didn’t like Quentin), and the book has a really British vibe to it for some reason. It’s just that I had more problems with The Magicians than I expected, and I’m not entirely convinced my problems came from the fact that I kept trying to read it as something different.

For instance, I didn’t like Quentin, as I said. He’s more an anti-hero than a hero, which isn’t a big deal (I actually like anti-heroes) but I didn’t like him even then. I found him repugnant most of the time, and it was only towards the end that I felt any sympathy for him. I didn’t like Alice, his girlfriend. I didn’t like any of the other characters except maybe Eliot and that was probably only because he was gay and I naturally feel more inclined to like gay characters.

I enjoyed the first part of the book much more than the last parts. But the last parts were enjoyable in a different way than the first part were. The first part was exciting because it was a magical college, and the second part was enjoyable in a “omg this is really depressing” kind of way. I know I’ve said over and over again that I can’t stand angst, but at the same time I really enjoy it– in a masochistic kind of way– when books take something sacred to me and then break it somehow. So, The Magicians took the sanctity of children’s fantasy books and exposed the underlying crap that tends to lurk in them.

So, it was depressing, in the same way that all dashed hopes are depressing, but it was fun to read about, too.

The problem is that the two main parts of the book seem to much different from each other that it made The Magicians more schizophrenic then it should have been. Then too there were some plotlines that went nowhere– though the majority seemed to tie themselves up by the end, true. But some other things just sort of appeared and then fizzled out and I’m not entirely sure what purpose they served in relation to the overall story.

The writing– minus the characters and the plot, of course– was fine. I didn’t notice anything horribly wrong and it kept me reading until the end, didn’t it?

I can’t help feeling like maybe I’m feeling a little more harsh towards The Magicians than I should. Is it because I’m mad it’s not more YA-ish? Or is it because of something else? I’ve been reading some other reviews and they’ve mostly been saying the same things I’ve been saying in my review, so maybe I’m just overreacting.

I would definitely recommend giving The Magicians a thought it you think it’d be something you like. It’s an interesting take on the world of children’s fantasy while not being a children’s fantasy itself. I read in another review that The Magicians is supposed to be a satire of those sorts of books, so perhaps try reading it that way instead of like a YA book and you’ll probably be fine.

Maybe get it from your library before forking moola out for the hardcover, though.

Kimi To Scandal

I never would have thought that Kimi To Scandal is a one-shot manga. And that it involves some minor incest (not really that major because they aren’t blood-related. And I am not sure if the guy is adopted or not, so if they are related by law, we should never know)

What first attracted me to this was this Sexyback video by the brilliant xTwistedproductions. I saw Eiji and he looked so cute. And we all know what happens next when a fan girl falls in love.

It’s good that I didn’t expect much from the manga when I read it. Of course I wanted to read some great manga but I didn’t really expect it to blow me away. And it didn’t. I was just reading it for the sake of reading and looking at Eiji. There was just nothing so very special about this.

From the first chapter (up to the end) we see a clear picture of Shiho’s fan girl-y side towards the cool and handsome singer, Eiji. And then her parents drops some very big information on her. She is Eiji’s little sister! What will she do if she finds herself living with the person she idolizes so much? But what if she finds out that Eiji isn’t exactly as ‘cool and handsome’ as she thought?

Kimi To Scandal isn’t exactly what you call an ‘entertaining read’. It’s more like something you read just because you want to do something and kill time. The characters aren’t interesting enough to make up for the cliche-ness of the storyline. Although Eiji is a good character, his ‘I used to be so lonely’ attitude is a bit too common, making me remove him from my favorite character list. The manager is an interestingly evil guy, though.

And I found it a bit too fast-paced. That’s the problem with one-shots. They have very limited pages and sometimes, the point you want to convey doesn’t reach the readers. So far, only Yumeka Sumomo managed to really impress me with her one-shots.

All in all, Kimi To Scandal can be disappointing if you expect too much. Better keep your expectations low.

Bonus Excerpt: Ten Little-Known Facts About Pink Floyd

1. Pink Floyd’s first two LPs, 1967’s Piper at the Gates of Dawn and 1968’s Saucerful of Secrets, were available in monaural mixes that the record label deleted by 1969. So even if you own those albums, you don’t really know ‘em without having heard the mono versions.
2. The signature riff to the Floyd’s 1967 space-rock instrumental “Interstellar Overdrive,” written by Syd Barrett, resembles both a Burt Bacharach song and the theme to a British sitcom.
3. An uncredited Pink Floyd are featured on “Give Birth to a Smile,” the final number on Roger Waters’ 1970 solo album Music from the Body.
4. Looking for inspiration in their attempt to follow-up the mega-seller Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd attempted to record songs using only household objects as instruments.
5. Pink Floyd’s faces were so obscure that, even in their days of fame in the mid-1970s, the band members were able to walk through crowds at their own shows and not be recognized.
6. Toni Tennille, of “The Captain &,” appeared as a backing vocalist on Pink Floyd’s 1979 double-album hit The Wall.
7. The Wall’s hit single, “Another Brick in the Wall Part II,” was partially influenced by the mid-tempo disco beat of Chic’s “Le Freak” and “Dance, Dance, Dance.”
8. Although keyboardist Rick Wright was kicked out of the band in 1979, the rock press was kept in the dark about this fact until the group’s next album, The Final Cut, was released in 1983.

10. A 1989 Pink Floyd concert in Venice went badly enough—the band’s volume damaged buildings and loiterers vandalized the city—that the entire city government resigned in shame.

Нещо не работи в този филм. И не само едно нещо…  Документалният стил (цифрова камера, jump монтаж) хич не върви с тази епоха. Даже обратното, на моменти така се набива в очи, че дразни.  Нула развитие на героите. Никаква вяра, че гледам истински, пълнокръвен Джон Дилинджър. Човекът порастнал във ферма, пребиван от баща си, и след това попаднал в пандиза – и излиза рафиниран, интелигентен и хладнокръвен разбойник? И последно, филма започна като история за бандата на Дилинджър (бягство от затвора, укриване, обир), превърна се в история за преследването на бандата от ФБР, вкара и любовна история, и завърши като микс от 3-те. Пък не разказа нито една като хората.

Ок, филма не е чак толкова лош. Но от групата Майкъл Ман, Джони Деп и Крисчън Бейл се очаква по-добро.

Há um sentimento 1984 neste filme que sinceramente começa a aborrecer-me. Ok, o mundo é um sítio cruel e as palavras, que significam conhecimento, livre-pensamento, são perseguidas porque uns tipos desconhecidos, indefinidos, desinteressantes. Aqueles que ainda buscam a liberdade e que estão dispostos a vivê-la são igualmente perseguidos, e vivem em perigo constante. Alguém que vem de dentro do sistema começa como um caçador, um lenhador das árvores das palavras. Depois, ele começa a fascinar-se com a beleza do mundo dessas palavras, e eventualmente pisa a linha, e vai para o outro lado, e torna-se fugitivo, um dos que ele costumava perseguir. Este é um dos muitos filmes de um ramo derivado da literatura de Orwell, Bradbury e outros. Algo devia ser inventado em cima disso… afinal Children of Men trabalhou a decadência de um futuro desagradável de forma muito mais interessante.

O que funciona neste filme é a sobreposição de imagens para criar algo visualmente coerente e atractivo. As palavras são consideradas literalmente aqui, são uma camada visual, sobre umas sombras agradavelmente indefinidas de personagens, eles mesmos sobrepostos a um último plano amarelo/castanho. Funciona, como uma peça plástica, funciona de um ponto de vista puramente visual. Isto não é cinematográfico na raiz, o tema está enraizado na literatura (nas palavras, para lá da sua expressão física), mas o filme é suficientemente bonito para o seguirmos.

Ando a ter uma espécie de caso amoroso com filmes stop motion, que usam imagens reais. Com marionetas também, mas é uma coisa diferente. As imagens reais em stop motion é o que mais me anda a interessar. Penso que o fascina é a sensação de lapso temporal. Ou seja, os objectos ganham uma vida própria, mexem-se sozinhos, sim. Mas mesmo que estejamos a ver objectos fotografados e não pessoas, há uma sensação de tempo que se escoa. Por isso, penso que o nos cativa tem a ver com o que não vemos. É uma boa experiência. Este filme é refrescante, em relação ao uso da técnica, e o aspecto que ganha. Tão refrescante e adorável como a paisagem que começa por enquadrar. Basicamente é um vídeoclip de uma certa canção, e não foge daquilo que um clip costuma ser. Mas há duas noções que me interessaram aqui, e provavelmente fazem o filme valer:

- uma é a forma como somos transportados do exterior para o interior. Começamos a olhar para uma enorme paisagem, e fazemos uma panorâmica até uma cabana, entramos nessa cabana, vamos até uma secretária, onde uma gaveta se abre, e chegamos até um plano aproximado dessa gaveta. É um plano bem estruturado, que provavelmente poderia ser interessante mesmo se o filme fosse acção real, mas a forma como isto é feito, com o stop motion que corta a fluidez da sequência, torna isto interessante de uma forma estranha. No final do filme, teremos uma vez mais a paisagem, já que teremos um reverso acelerado do plano inicial. Isto permite ao filme respirar, e enquadrar a sequência dentro da gaveta, assim como dar-lhe um contexto;

-a gaveta, que corresponde à maioria do filme. O que me interessa aqui é como o enquadramento que vemos coincide com os limites da gaveta e como essa moldura se divide em diferentes quadros, literalmente separados pelas separações de madeira dentro da gaveta. Por isso temos diferentes quadros, diferentes coisas que acontecem. Para realçar isto, num desses quadros temos, em vez de stop motion, animação com desenhos, inseridos na fotografia do stop motion. No outro quadro temos simples stop motion.

Duas noções de enquadramento. Uma à escala do grande filme, a outra dentro da própria moldura da gaveta. Bom. A música dá um bom ambiente ao filme, ou o contrário. É um exercício simples, e não vai para além do que vemos, mas é bom mesmo assim

This is one of the best Dragon Ball Z movies. It had a decent story and some good action. And we can ignore the fact that telling how Trunks got his sword in this time period doesn’t make any sense since none of these movies fit into the show’s continuity. Speaking of Trunks, it was nice to see him act on his own without Goten around. I don’t think this was quite as good as movie 12, but it definitely had a much better story than that one did.

Den här måste jag nästan se om. Kollade in den häromveckan men har redan glömt bort nästan allting. Hade sett fram emot den jättelänge, kan tilläggas. Var den bra? Visst, det var extremt schyst när Zooey Deschanel sjöng The Smiths i hissen (Då tänker jag att hon gillar dem i verkligheten, att hej, det gör ju jag också, samt att hon på grundval av det eventuellt skulle vilja bli ihop med mig. Tror att det är lite det som är meningen), men det hade jag ju redan sett hundra gånger, i trailern. Joseph Gordon-Levitt är skön, har du inte sett “Brick” så måste du göra det. Lillsyrran är fin, får mig att tänka på Phoebe i “Räddaren”. Slutet var lyckligt och bra. Eller orealistiskt och känslomässigt fördummande. Är så ambivalent inför sådana här filmer. Gillar dem, men föraktar samtidigt delar av mig själv för att jag gör det.

Jag blev lite besviken. Kan inte bestämma mig för huruvida jag tycker att Charlyne Yi är lite gullig eller bara extremt irriterande. Bägge, tror jag. Jag får jobbiga “jag går estetisk” -vibbar back from the gymnasiet. Förmodligen en blandning av mitt obehag inför det maniererat “speciella”, gärna på bekostnad av verklig introspektion (OK här tar jag i, men tänk typ Regina Lund eller, Gud hav barmhärtighet, Jonas Gardell) i kombination med självförakt sprunget ur egna, orealiserade, konstnärliga ambitioner. Men det är en annan och mer terapikrävande historia. Filmens stora behållning är, som många redan framhållit, intervjuerna med “riktiga” människor. De kanske också är fejkade, vad vet jag, men det spelar i sammanhanget mindre roll. Gillar kasperdockorna/dockanimationerna. Lite Gondry -känsla.

While I love these “normal” lenses from Canon, I wish there was an option or a threaded provision for the Leica-style manual focus.  If you aren’t familiar this, they have a crescent-shaped piece that fits on the focus ring and allows quick, accurate manual focus for street photography and other reactionary/snap shooting.

Ken Rockwell has an excellent image of this:

Anybody modded a Canon lens to accept a piece like this?  I’d be very nervous about drilling and tapping into the focus ring of my $1200 lens, but maybe on cheap 50 1.8 as an experiment!

A comédia é um género especialmente bom para se trabalhar em animação. Isso porque os conceitos de comédia de situação, os maneirismos, ou interacções irreais entre elementos (como animais ou objectos) ganham novas possibilidades.

Na mesma sessão do cinanima, vi duas comédias seguidas. Duas visões diferentes de como usar as mesmas ferramentas. Este é o menos interessante dos dois (o outro foi ‘chumps & clumps). Não é que as ideias trabalhadas aqui sejam menos interessantes do que as de chumps. Simplesmente eles não as trabalham tão bem como os tipos do chumps fazem com as opções deles. Por isso aqui temos basicamente o sucesso da comédia confiado na interacção entre o pombo e o james bond, e as coisas imprevisíveis que o pombo pode fazer porque é suficientemente pequeno para entrar na mala assassina. Interacção homem-animal, e relações de escala estranhas. É isso.

Algumas piadas são boas, mas o sentido de estilo e a precisão visual das piadas não estão assim tão desenvolvidos. Mas tem piada.

Le schéma régional du tourisme de Bretagne a décidé de la mise en place d’un centre de ressources et de veille au Comité Régional du Tourisme de Bretagne. Afin de réaliser cet objectif, nous recrutons un/une documentaliste, ayant impérativement une expérience réussie de mise en place d’un centre de ressources, d’un système d’informations circulantes, et de pratique de veille.

Le poste est rattaché au pôle Observatoire du Comité régional du tourisme de Bretagne chargé de la production de données chiffrées du tourisme de la Bretagne pour éclairer les tendances.

Le centre de ressources et de veille est un outil qui devra répondre aux besoins internes du Comité régional du Tourisme de Bretagne, comme à ceux des professionnels et interlocuteurs externes. La personne recrutée sera amenée à collaborer de façon plus étroite avec un rédacteur vulgarisateur de données chiffrées du tourisme.

La personne en charge du centre de ressources et de veille devra être dynamique, avoir une réelle autonomie, des capacités d’animation et d’initiative importantes afin de conduire ce projet rapidement avec succès. Elle devra faire un réel travail d’équipe en acculturant son environnement à de nouvelles pratiques et méthodes de circulation de l’information. Elle participera à la production d’outils de veille au sein du pôle Observatoire du Comité régional du tourisme de Bretagne. Cette fonction requiert de la pédagogie, du pragmatisme, de l’efficacité, des qualités rédactionnelles et de communication indispensables pour mener à bien cette mission.

Formation en documentation impérative de type ENSSIB ou INTD, ou CNAM, avec une pratique confirmée de logiciels de gestion de l’information.
