Companies Continue To Recruit Employees Despite High Turnover

Kansas City, Kan. – As unemployment rates begin to level off and the economy begins to show signs of improvement, companies across the country are hopeful 2010 will be a better year. The newly released BenchmarkPro survey results show 91.1 percent of organizations are actively recruiting personnel. Although the total turnover rate across all industries was 16.3 percent in 2009, companies are still on the lookout for new talent.

The newly released results found turnover rates were lowest in the Midwest at 15.7 percent, which was followed by organizations in the Northeast at 15.8 percent. The South Central region had the highest turnover rates at 17.6 percent.

Turnover also varied by industry with the lowest rates reported in utilities, 7.1 percent. Respondents in banking and finance reported turnover rates at 18.6 percent. The highest turnover rates were reported within the hospitality industry, 31.1 percent.

“Even though unemployment rates are high, companies still struggle to find candidates who are qualified to fill open positions,” said Amy Kaminski, manager of marketing programs for Compdata Surveys, the nation’s leading compensation and benefits survey data provider. “Hiring an employee with the right skills will be paramount to a company’s success in the coming months, particularly as the economy begins to rebound.”

To fill these gaps, companies used a variety of recruitment methods to attract new employees. The 2009 BenchmarkPro results report the most widely used recruitment method was advertising on the internet, 77.1 percent. Newspaper advertising and employee referral programs were prevalent at 65.1 and 53.6 percent, respectively. Trade and professional association advertising was used by 33.9 percent of organizations, compared to sign-on bonuses at 31.8 percent.

About the Survey
It feeds essentially on insects and rodents that it hunts by hovering in place. The length of the Black-shouldered Kite is 41 cm and its wingspan is 107 cm.

The Bushtit, the Black-caped Chickadee and the Chestnut-backed Chickadee feed on various insects, spiders, seeds and small fruits. Nesting birds, they are found in the leafy and conifer forests, clear wooded areas and clearings of the American and Canadian West. Only the Black-capped Chickadee can be found in southern Québec and in the Maritimes. This latter bird is the aviary emblem of New Brunswick. The length of the Bushtit is 11 cm, the Black-capped Chickadee’s is 12 to 15 cm, and the Chestnut-backed Chickadee’s length is 12 cm.

Though the first bird is timid and the second one discreet, the Scarlet Tanager and the Western Tanager share visibly similar diets. Indeed, both feed on the insects, fruits and buds they find in leafy forests and conifer forests. While the first is found in eastern Canada during the nesting period, and in the north-western part of South America during the winter season, the second bird is found more commonly in the western part of North America during the nesting period and along the American South Coast during the winter. The average length of both the Scarlet Tanager and the Western Tanager is 18 cm.

Lean Manufacturing and Safety Remain Important to Manufacturers

Kansas City, Kan./August 26, 2009 – Whether adding safety incentives, gaining ISO 9000 certification or using lean practices, the manufacturing industry utilizes a number of unique methods to keep quality and efficiency high in their organizations. The 2009 Compensation Data Manufacturing survey collected data on each of these tactics to determine the degree to which they are used.

Lean manufacturing programs were designed to maximize value and minimize waste. When comparing the various components, a 5S program is the most commonly used at 67.6 percent. Six Sigma followed at 58.5 percent with Kaizen process improvement close behind. Value Stream Mapping and Kanban are employed by less than half of the companies surveyed.

Manufacturers and distributors promote safety through a variety of incentives. Gift certificates, rewards and merchandise are used by more than half of the organizations surveyed. Safety awards and certificates are utilized by 43.9 percent, while bonuses are used by nearly a quarter.

“Employing these techniques can be a cost-effective move. In particular, safety incentives can translate to huge savings for employers,” said Amy Kaminski, manager of marketing programs for Compdata Surveys. “Fewer workers’ compensation claims, lower insurance premiums and a happier workforce are often the result of a well-thought out safety incentive program.”

ISO 9000 standards are comprised of guidelines relating to quality management systems and supporting standards. The survey results found 56.8 percent of the companies surveyed had this certification. Durable goods had the largest percentage, 67, while distribution and warehouse had the smallest, 32.9 percent. At non-durable organizations, less than half had ISO 9000 certification.

Healthcare Costs Increase in 2009 for Banking and Financial Organizations

Kansas City, Kan./August 17, 2009 – Compounding economic pressures, most U.S. banking and financial organizations saw an increase in their health insurance premium. Although the average premium increase had been decreasing in previous years, the numbers are up again. The 2009 Compensation Data Banking & Finance results showed the average premium increase was 9.3 percent for all plan types this year.

Comparatively, the average premium increase was 5.8 percent in 2008 and then, 10.7 percent the previous year. When comparing plans in 2009, 73.1 percent of organizations offering PPO plans saw an average increase of 9 percent. Those offering HMO and POS plans had average premium increases of 8.7 and 11.1 percent, respectively. HDHP plans had increases of 10.4 percent.

“Medical plans continue to be a source of scrutiny, as high health insurance costs are cutting into organizations’ bottom lines,” said Amy Kaminski, manager of marketing programs for Compdata Surveys. “Organizations continue to search for ways to reduce healthcare costs, but often higher costs are passed on to employees.”

To contain rising costs, U.S. banking and financial institutions utilized a variety of methods. The most highly used was a network of healthcare professionals at 80.8 percent in 2009, while coordination of benefits was employed by 79.2 percent. Utilization reviews were prevalent, as 64.4 percent of organizations used them to contain costs.

The survey results showed 53.7 percent of companies increased the employee portion of the premium in their efforts to reduce costs. Also, 43.8 and 17.3 percent of organizations increased deductible levels and employee co-insurance levels, respectively. On average, banking and financial organizations contribute 7.5 percent of payroll toward the cost of health benefits compared to 10.7 percent to provide all of the following benefits: dental, life, retirement, disability and other non-mandated benefits.

Cost of Prescription Co-Pays Remains Stable for U.S. Utilities

Kansas City, Kan./August 18, 2009 – Americans are facing increasing economic pressure, and as a result, many have cut back or quit taking their prescriptions. Employed workers with access to health insurance can experience some economic relief through employer paid prescription coverage. In fact, the 2009 Compensation Data Utilities survey results found more than 82 percent of utilities offer prescription drug coverage as part of their PPO, Indemnity, HMO or HDHP medical plan offerings.

“When individuals are not adhering to their prescribed medications, they run the risk of incurring increased medical costs in the future. Large claims drive up the cost of health insurance impacting future costs for employers,” said Amy Kaminski, manager of marketing programs for Compdata Surveys, the nation’s leading compensation and benefits survey data provider. “For many, this practice can be cost-saving in the short term, but detrimental to their health and wallet in the future.”

When comparing prescription costs, non-formulary co-pays have seen little change since 2008. The survey found HDHP plans had the highest co-pay, $49.00, while non-formulary co-pays on PPO plans were $39.00.

While co-pays for non-formulary drugs have risen nationally, formulary drugs have remained stable across all plans in the last year. The average cost of formulary drugs on PPO plans was $25.00. HDHP plans had the highest formulary cost this year, $27.00, and HMO had the lowest, $21.00.

In comparison, co-pays for generic drugs have stayed under $15.00 on all plans in 2009. According to the newly released results, generic co-pays were $10.00 for PPO and HDHP plans. On average, an individual could save over $30.00 per prescription when choosing a generic over a non-formulary drug.

Ready for a Vacation? U.S. Utilities Offer Valuable Time Off

Kansas City, Kan. – As summer comes to a close, many employees have their eyes on a few days of relaxation. Whether spending time at home or taking a vacation abroad, time off packages continue to be a valuable asset to U.S. employees. The 2009 Compensation Data Utilities results found exempt employees in their first year are typically given 7.9 vacation days, while non-exempt have 7.1.

Utilities offer a variety of time off packages to employees. The 2009 Compensation Data Utilities results found exempt employees have 10.7 days on average after their first year. Those with five to nine years of service earn 13.5 days. In addition to vacation time, exempt and non-exempt employees have three personal days and ten holidays a year on average.

The survey also reported 81.1 percent of companies allow carryover of vacation days, and 97.3 percent place a limit on the number of days that can be carried over. The maximum number of days allowed for exempt employees is 26.7 days, compared to 26.2 for non-exempt.

“Many employees may not have the funds to take a long distance trip. However, companies are offering unpaid time off to alleviate growing costs. Consequently, the popularity of ’staycations,’ or vacations at home, is on the rise,” said Amy Kaminski, manager of marketing programs for Compdata Surveys. “Additionally, organizations are continuing to offer flexible schedules as a practical and inexpensive perk.”

Flexible schedules are one way organizations can add value to their benefit package. The 2009 survey found 76 percent of companies allow flexible schedules. When comparing prevalence among employee groups, they are most offered to hourly employees, 55.6 percent.

Spoilers Ahead – Don’t Read If You Haven’t Seen The Chapter!

—

Since my blog just opened up this week, I have not had a chance to review the whole battle between Ichigo and Ulquiorra; luckily for me, I get a chance to review the most important piece — the finale.

Now a lot of people seemed to be discontent about what transpired toward the end of the fight. Leaving off from last week, we saw that Hollow Ichigo launched an enormous cero blast onto an attacking Ulquiorra. Though a lot of people thought that that would have been the end of the quiet villain, it wouldn’t quite have been the right way to close the fight. I mean, who likes it when a bad guy you’ve been following for a while is unexpectedly defeated? The fight has gone back and forth over the last few weeks, with each combatant getting more powerful every time the other raised it up a notch. This makes for a classic shounen showdown and I wouldn’t have it any other way. If you can honestly say that you haven’t enjoyed the battle that has taken place here over the last two months, then I must question your anime fandom. Dragonball Z left quite an impression on the world of anime fighting, and though it is at times cleverly covered by unexpected plots or character development, nothing will ever change the classic protagonist vs. antagonist climax.

Now what truly got a lot of fans frustrated was the fact that Ichigo was unaware what transpired after he came to. A lot of people thought that he was “somewhat” in control of that bizarre transformation, which I think is kind of strange. If he was in control, he wouldn’t of stabbed Ishida in the stomach and later said, “whoops did I do that?” It seemed like Ichigo’s subconcious was truly the only thing active while his primitive form was rampaging across the top of Los Noches. Ichigo will most likely retain some memory eventually, but for now the shock of it all has him a bit confused. Also, he goes on to complain that he wasn’t the one who got to truly finish the fight between them. Well Ichigo, I would sympathize with you if not for the fact that you lost when it was just “you” and Ulquiorra fighting it out. Last time I checked, a hole in one’s chest usually signals the loss of a fight; that’s some endurance eh?

Nevertheless, we eventually come to the end where poor Ulq realizes that he can no longer hold back the after-effect of the blast and begins to fade away. Though a lot of people were wondering why he faded away rather than just fall to the ground, it really doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Both Kariya from the Bounto arc and Zomari both faded away after being given death blows. Why do they disappear? Who knows. Maybe it was just a clever way to get rid of Ulquiorra so Orihime wouldn’t have any chance of bringing him back; you know how good guys are right?

Only complaint I had this chapter was the “forced” closure between Ulquiorra and Orihime. I mean, the poor girl has just spent the last couple of weeks being terrified of the guy, only to reach out to him at the end. I guess when there’s no longer a threat one can show some compassion. Is it truly the end of Ulquiorra though? We’ll have to see, but one quote really stands out to me:

“If you don’ t kill me now, it will never be over” – Ulquiorra

Perhaps he was saying that to Ichigo to get him to get over his fear of killing or “playing fair.” Or perhaps there is a hidden meaning to that phrase. That’s the great thing about Bleach, you can never quite pinpoint what’s going on in the author’s head. It is for that reason that his fans both love and hate him. I personally just love seeing the quarrels that go on about this stuff.

So, all’s well that ends well I suppose. It will be interesting to see what Ichigo does now that he has unlocked yet another form, but for now, he has done all that he needs to in Hueco Muendo. I am looking forward to seeing how the Karakura Town fights are playing out, especially the battle between Captain Shunsui and Stark. I want to see some Bankai’s and releases!

Chapter Rating – 8/10

Ulquiorra: “Sayonara, Inoue Orihime”

We’re now 35+3 and all is fine apart from the SPD. I’m now on crutches with that and having acupuncture, which to be honest, I don’t think will do much in the short space of time that I have left. I didn’t enjoy the session, it hurt. If anyone ever tells you that acupuncture is painless, they are lying! The needles going in were fine but then they twiddle them and OMG, ouch! I have another session next week and I won’t be looking forward to it at all!

Anyway, we had our 35 week midwife check up this morning. Everything was fine and dandy and she found no problems which is always good. We saw a different midwife, Sylvia, as our usual one, Jo, was off today.

I have to admit that at first, she looked a little scary but I have honestly never met a nicer woman! I loved her and I wish I could see her every single time!

She took time to actually explain which position Flump is laying in (bum to my right and legs to the left) and told us that she was listening to the heartbeat basically through the shoulder. We were amazed at how low down the shoulders actually are at this point.

She also made my day by telling us that Flump’s head is now 1/5 engaged which means that 4/5’s are free (that’s what they write on your notes – it can be quite confusing actually!). I was hoping she would say that he’s engaged as that is a good sign! Woohoo!

It has kind of made it feel like we are nearing the end now and it’s even better when everything else is as it should be.

Next big thing is the nursery furniture which is due to arrive on Monday evening. As soon as it is all together I will be posting pictures. I am so excited! We have waited months for this!

“Out of respect for the sponsoring organization and the legal profession, Charlie Merkel has withdrawn from participation in the Masters In Trial seminar lest his appearance on the program with Judge DeLaughter be turned into an unseemly spectacle or the feigned deference he would be obliged to show the judge in even a mock trial might be misinterpreted as condonation of the judge’s purported conduct.”
